New Delhi: Led by Indian diaspora groups, a British
MP, activists and others held a protest demonstration outside 10 Downing Street
in London – the official residence of the UK prime minister – followed by a
march to the Indian High Commission in the city on Sunday, July 3, to condemn
attacks against minorities in India and muzzling of dissenting voices by the
Narendra Modi government.
Towards this effect, they said the UK must strengthen
its stand to stop India from committing a “genocide” of Muslims. They also
demanded the release of human rights activist Teesta Setalvad, journalist and
fact-checker Mohammed Zubair, and all political prisoners in India.
Addressing a massive rally outside 10 Downing Street,
Independent MP Claudia Webbe said, “Given Britain’s imperial past of
divide-and-rule and continuing exploitation in India, the UK government has a
historical and moral responsibility for what is happening to the religious
minorities in India today. Britain’s trade agreements need to be called out.
They are lacking any human rights stipulations. We have a duty to oppose this.”
Sonali Bhattacharyya, National Secretary of Momentum,
a socialist group within the Labour Party, called out the “cosy relationship”
of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is said to be resigning soon, with
Prime Minister Modi. She said both of them shared “many political aims”.
“Adani offered public support to Modi in 2003 in the
face of the condemnation he faced for his role in the massacres in Gujarat.
This gamble has paid off handsomely for Adani. Modi’s government has relaxed
competition rules around major infrastructural projects benefitting Adani and
helping him become one of the richest men in India.
Adani is now seeking inroads into Britain’s aerospace
and defence, wooing Johnson’s government for contracts as the conglomerate
expands its portfolio from agriculture and commodities into defence. To smooth
these new ventures he is now scrambling for platforms to greenwash his
business,” she added.
A press statement issued by protesters said, “The
ethnic cleansing of Indian Muslims through the enactment of laws comparable to
the Nazi Nuremberg laws such as the exclusionary and Islamophobic Citizenship
Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens which strips undocumented
Indian Muslims of their citizenship and incarcerates them in detention
centres.”
The protest sought to highlight various issues of
India, such as “state-sponsored attacks” on Muslims, “criminalisation of human
rights activists”, “persecution of
Christians, Sikhs, Dalits and Adivasis”, “weaponisation” of several laws such
as the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, and lynchings by vigilante groups.
The protest was jointly organised by more than 20
Indian diaspora groups, including Strive UK, South Asia Solidarity Group,
Scottish Indians for Justice, Indian Muslim Federation, International Council
of Indian Muslims, International Solidarity for Academic Freedom (InSAF), SOAS
India Society, East Midlands Malayali Muslim Association, Apna Haq, Women
Against Caste, South Asian Alternative Forum, Oxford, The London Story, The

US: It is “Too Early” to Recognize the Taliban’s
Government
Photo: The Khaama Press
----
By Saqalain Eqbal
07 Jul 2022
“Some countries are beginning a very slow process of
normalization of relations. No one is talking about formal recognition,” Donald
Lu, US assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, said in an
interview with VOA.
“I think there’s actually a global consensus to
include Moscow and Beijing and Iran, that it’s too early to look at
recognition,” Lu added.
The American official emphasized that international
talks were instead concentrated on trying to engage the Taliban in ways that
could potentially improve the security and conditions for women and girls in
Afghanistan.
After nearly two decades of foreign military
engagement in Afghanistan, the Taliban took control of the government last
August when the United States and its NATO allies withdrew their military
troops.
While the Taliban’s all-male administration imposed
severe restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan, including the mandatory
hijab, travel restrictions, gender segregation rules, and the suspension of
girls’ schools, the US has made it abundantly clear that no legitimacy and
recognition is possible until the Taliban lift their restrictions on women and
build an inclusive government.
The Taliban have been in power for almost a year now,
but no nation has yet recognized them. Instead, the international community has
urged the Taliban to establish their legitimacy by upholding human rights,
upholding women’s rights, establishing an inclusive government, and combating
terrorism.

Hamas Calls For Muslim To Come To Hebron Site To
Prevent 'Jewish Takeover'
Cave of the Patriarchs
----
Jul 7, 2022
Naif al-Rajoub, a Hamas MP, is calling on Muslims to
come en masse to the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron (Cave of the Patriarchs) for the
Eid al-Adha holiday.
Rajoub explained the importance of the presence of
Muslims at the site in defending the site from Israel's attempts to take over
and "Judaize" it.
"The large number of Muslims who will visit the
place will prevent the occupation from gaining control of it and the other holy
places, and this is the security valve to prevent the takeover of the
Jews," Rajoub said.
The Muslim prayer for Eid al-Adha will be held in the
Cave of the Patriarchs on Saturday, July 9.

Taliban Says Their Government Is “Undismayed” by the
Rescission of Afghanistan’s Designation as a Major Non-NATO Ally
Taliban spokesman
Zabihullah Mujahid
----
By Saqalain Eqbal
07 Jul 2022
US President Joe Biden officially announced his
intention to withdraw Afghanistan’s designation as a major non-NATO ally in a
letter to Congress on July 6.
President Biden’s decision to rescind Afghanistan’s
designation in NATO was met with a tweetstorm in which Zabihullah Mujahid
reacted that Afghanistan never “benefited” from the designation in the first
place.
In 2012, the United States recognized Afghanistan as a
major non-NATO ally, laying the foundation for the two countries to maintain
their defense and trade ties.
The Taliban official also reiterated that the
Taliban’s government seeks “dependable” and “positive” diplomatic and trade
relations with the countries.
Contrary to the US’s NATO allies, who are bound together
by a collective defense pact, a non-NATO ally is not protected by a mutual
defense guarantee.
With the exclusion of Afghanistan, the United States
will have a total of 18 major non-NATO allies, including Australia, Argentina,
the Philippines, South Korea, New Zealand, Pakistan, Columbia, Qatar, Thailand,
Tunisia, Morocco, Bahrain, Brazil, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Japan, and Kuwait.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia announced it would allow Lebanese
citizens to directly enter the Kingdom without the need to spend 14 days in
quarantine in a third country before visiting, a Saudi official said.
Saudi ambassador to Lebanon Waleed Bukhari posted on
Twitter the ease of restrictions on Lebanese visitors to the Kingdom.
“Lebanese citizens can fly directly to the Kingdom

All passengers departing from Lebanon were previously
required to stay outside Lebanon not less than 14 days before entering Saudi
Arabia if vaccinated outside the Kingdom as part of COVID-19 precautionary

The ease of restrictions comes as Saudi Arabia
permitted over one million pilgrims to perform Hajj this year in the largest

Arson Detectives Investigating Possible Hate Crime In

Long Island Police are looking into the possibility of
a hate-induced crime behind the attack on a mosque in Ronkonkoma. Suffolk
County Police Hate Crimes Unit and Arson Section investigators are still
probing the incident that took place on July 4 at the Fatima Al-Zahra mosque on
Lake Shore Road around midnight.
Authorities are trying to put a finger on whether the
house of worship was intentionally targeted after reports state that the
explosive container thrown at the mosque could be an act of hate against the
thriving Islamic community in the area. The firebomb, which exploded outside
the building, was compared to an explosion similar to a molotov cocktail and
was aimed at the crescent sign of the mosque, ABC7 NY reported.

A significant step towards friendlier Jewish-Muslim

July 7, 2022,
The Chief Rabbi
In recent times, Jewish-Muslim relations have been
exceptionally challenging. While friendly and constructive dialogue is
commonplace, it has too often been overshadowed by division and conflict.
However, there are clear signs that a new, positive atmosphere is emerging. My
public meeting this week with Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah provided welcome
evidence of this.
Sheikh Bin Bayyah, one of the foremost Islamic
scholars in the world and a passionate advocate for constructive dialogue,
embodies the principle that we are taught in the Ethics of the Fathers, that we

By Greenbarge Reporters
July 8, 2022
The Sultan of Sokoto and President General Jama’atu
Nasril Islam, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad
Abubakar, has asked Muslims in Nigeria to increase in their prayer today, July
8, which is Arafat Day, for Allah to end the insecurity ravaging the country.
Speaking against the backdrop of Tuesday’s twin
devastating attacks on the convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari’s advance team
to Daura, Katsina state and Kuje Correctional Center, where a security agent
was killed, two others were injured and the prison gate opened for all inmates
to escape, the Sultan tasked the Muslim ummah to take advantage of the grace of

Munich Olympics give way to Soccer v. Jihad
By Dr. James M. Dorsey
July 8, 2022
In many ways, the Black September attack on the
Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 discloses little about the evolution of the
targeting of sporting events by political and religious militants even though
it remains to date the incident with the greatest number of fatalities. If
anything, the Munich attack was never replicated in scale and drama. It
introduced a post-World War Two period in which secular nationalists rather
than religious militants dominated the targeting of sporting events,
executives, and athletes. That may have been different if plans for attacks by
religious militants had not failed or been foiled. Interestingly and more as a
result of local circumstances, successful attacks on sporting events and
personalities since Munich have struck a balance between having been
perpetrated by secularists and religious militants. This is true even if
political violence since the 1980s increasingly has been perpetrated by
religious rather than secular militants.
Moreover, Munich contains few lessons for
understanding the evolution of political violence in the half a century since.
What the record of political violence in the last 50 years does show is a shift
in the 1980s from secular and nationalist to militant religious perpetrators.
The record also illustrates that the targeting of sporting events constitutes a
minority of the number of trans-national incidents of political violence in the
past 40 years. That picture changes when local occurrences such as attacks in
Iraq and Nigeria are taken into account. Analysis further shows that the
deadliest attacks have been carried out by Islamists, perhaps because Islamists
are more prone to embrace death by suicide while secular perpetrators maintain
the hope that they may survive the attack.
