By John Varga
Dec 10, 2022
Islamist militants massacred 33 women married to
fighters from the so-called Islamic State in a bloody revenge attack. The
slaughter was carried out by fighters belonging to Boko Haram, a militant
Islamic terror group based in northeast Nigeria. The terror organisation
launched a jihadist insurgency back in 2009 with the aim of toppling the
Nigerian government and replacing it with an Islamic regime.
Ali Ngulde, the leader of the Nigerian militants, sent
his men to attack a camp belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province
(ISWAP).
The attack was reportedly in revenge for the killing
of the Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau and at least twelve other members
by ISWAP soldiers, after peace talks between the two groups broke down -
according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
It came to world prominence in 2014, when the
militants kidnapped hundreds of school girls in Chibok, while they were sitting
an exam.
The group is believed to be responsible for an
estimated 40,000 deaths and its terror campaigns have extended into neighbouring
Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
Retired Brigadier General Abdullahi Ishaq, a special
security adviser to the Borno state governor in northeastern Nigeria, told
reporters on Saturday about Shekau's many female companions.
Commenting on a reconciliation process with former
Boko Haram militants, he said: "We started this non-kinetic approach 16
months ago.
"The model started shortly after the death of
Abubakar Shekau and the state government didn’t want Islamic State of West
African Province (ISWAP) to continue using the Shekau’s fighters.
"We know it would be deadly. So, the first of
fighters that I received in Bama told me that Shekau had 83 concubines, just
imagine he left behind 83 concubines.
It comes as a Reuters investigation alleges that the
Nigerian Army has run an illegal abortion campaign in the country since at
least 2013.
According to Reuters, at least 10,000 pregnancies
among women and girls, many of whom had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist
militants, were terminated.

100 Christians Faced Faith Conversion, Child Marriage
In Three Years in Pakistan: Report Titled “Conversion without Consent”

----
Staff Reporter
December 11, 2022
LAHORE: As many as 100 cases of abduction, forced
faith conversion, forced and child marriage of girls and women belonging to the
Christian community have been reported since January 2019 to October 2022 in
Pakistan, says a report titled “Conversion without Consent” released by Voice
for Justice (VFJ) and Jubilee Campaign.
According to the report released on Saturday, as many
as 27 cases were recorded in 2019, 12 in 2020, 42 in 2021 and 19 till October
2022. The data showed that the highest number of cases - 86 - were reported in
Punjab, followed by 11 in Sindh, two in Islamabad and one in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, whereas no case was reported in Balochistan.
The report also includes the renowned cases of
underage girls particularly Zarvia Parvaiz, Saba Nadeem, Chashman Kanwal and
Sunaina James who became victims of forced faith conversions.
Zarvia Parvaiz told the court that she was heavily
drugged, raped, beaten with a stick, burnt with cigarettes, and electrocuted by
her abductors.
Saba Nadeem testified that “she was abducted and
raped, and the perpetrator took her thumb impression on the certificate of
marriage and conversion against her free will and consent, and threatened her
with dire consequences if she revealed the assault to anyone.”
The report shows that 61 per cent of girls were
targeted before reaching 16 years of age, 18pc became victims between the age
of 16 and 18 years and 14pc became victims above 18 years of age and the ages
of seven victims were not ascertained.
The data reveals that 67pc of the cases were reported
in the five districts alone - Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Sheikhupura
from Punjab and Karachi from Sindh - which exhibit a high rate of cases of
underage minorities girls.
The report reveals that the majority of the girl
victims of forced faith conversions and child marriage are minors, however, the
fabricated age of all victims is deliberately altered to 18 years or above by
perpetrators on certificates of marriage to avoid criminal conviction under the
Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929 according to which marriage to an underage
child is illegal and punishable by imprisonment.
All minor girls are presented as adults and
economically independent and their marriages are executed in the absence of a
lawyer or consent of a legal guardian (parents).
The report concludes that child brides have a greater
likelihood of school dropout, health-related complications, lower labour force
participation and earnings, and little decision-making power within the family.
The abduction of schoolgirls hinders their access to
opportunities such as education, skill development, and employment, all of
which are essential for leading a dignified and self-sufficient life.
The report recommends that an affirmative action must
be taken for the protection, promotion, and fulfillment of minority rights,
particularly in the context of reforming the existing civil and criminal
justice system to render it more sensitive to the needs of victims of forced
conversions and their families.
Moreover, the authorities must ensure that the
observance of a state religion neither impairs the enjoyment of any human
rights or any minority religion, nor results in discrimination in law, policy,
and jurisprudence against those who profess a faith or set of beliefs contrary
to the majority religion.

“Neo-Ottomanism”: Turkey Has Imposed Islamic Rule On
Both Its Domestic And Foreign Policies

December 11, 2022
Both the Biden administration and the GOP might be
lulled into believing that Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could be
the honest broker they need to act as go-between between the United States and
Russia. But this is not the case.
By now it must be apparent that Turkey has joined
forces with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Iran’s Ebrahim Raisi, China’s Xi Jinping
and Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman.
When the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to
power in 2002, it presented itself as moderate, Westward-looking and
neoliberal, and the US and the European Union were taken in. As then-secretary
of state Condoleezza Rice gushed, the AKP was “a government dedicated to
pulling Turkey West toward Europe.”
The AKP made use of EU conditionality to obtain
economic benefits, but with the show trials against secular opponents from 2008
to 2013 and the crackdown on Istanbul’s Gezi Park protests, it showed its real
face.
The same year, the head of the AKP’s Istanbul branch
made it clear that “the new Turkey” the party was building would not feature a
future that its liberal supporters could accept or desire.
It has become clear that Turkey has imposed Islamic
rule not only in domestic policy (including the economy) but also in foreign
policy. In 2001, Turkish Prof. Ahmet Davutoglu – who became Erdogan’s chief
adviser, foreign minister and prime minister – posited in his key work
Strategic Depth that Turkey’s foreign policy should be based on engagement with
countries with which it shared a common past and geography. This policy came to
be dubbed “neo-Ottomanism.”
Davutoglu considered the century of republican rule “a
parenthesis” and aimed to restore Turkey’s hegemony over the Balkans, Caucasus
and Middle East. In an address at an AKP conference, he spoke of the birth of a
global power and the mission to create a new world order (nizam-i âlem), an
Ottoman concept synonymous with Islamic rule.
Davutoglu, however, flew too close to the Sun and was
toppled in an AKP plot. In October 2012, Islamic scholar Ibrahim Kalin, who is
now Erdogan’s chief adviser and spokesperson, gave a keynote speech at the
Istanbul Forum, where he spoke of a new geopolitical framework that rejects the
Western-centric political and economic order.
He also rejected the European model of secular
democracy, politics and pluralism. This is in keeping with the views expressed
by Putin at a plenary session of the Valdai Club in October.
AT THE Qatar Forum in March, Kalin repeated his call
for a new global security architecture. Political scientist Nuray Mert has
dismissed neo-Ottomanism as irredentist nationalism. Indeed, Erdogan has talked
of revoking the 1923 Lausanne Treaty, which defined Turkey’s present borders,
in favor of the National Pact (Misak-i Milli), a decision by the last Ottoman
Parliament in 1920 to include parts of Syria, Greece and Iraq.
Four years ago, Erdogan’s head of international
relations, Ayse Sözen Usluer, stated that Turkey for the last 10-15 years had
felt no need to choose between the West and the East, or between the US and
Russia. She emphasized Turkey’s strategic importance and maintained there was
no axis shift.
Now there is. Against a backdrop of estrangement from
the US and the EU, Erdogan in September on his return from a Shanghai
Cooperation Organization summit in Samarkand declared it was his intention to
join. Membership of “Rogue NATO” will undoubtedly put a strain on Turkey’s
relations with NATO, which are already tenuous because of Turkey’s strengthened
economic ties with Russia and Putin’s plan to make Turkey a hub for the
transporting of Russian gas to Europe.
At the same time, Erdogan cites “security concerns” to
force Sweden to hand over political refugees in return for Turkey’s approval of
that country’s NATO membership. The Istanbul bombing has given Erdogan a
pretext to play the national security card and justify airstrikes on Kurdish
positions in Iraq and northeastern Syria.
He is also planning a fourth incursion into Syria to
boost the president’s approval ratings ahead of next year’s elections. US
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez has condemned these
airstrikes as not the actions of an ally.
In connection with the Biden administration’s plan to
conclude an F-16 deal with Turkey, Menendez has warned, “I think the administration
has to stop seeing from the aspirational part of what we would like Turkey to
be, and realize that Turkey is under Erdogan.”
In October, Turkey’s Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu,
a hard-liner and contender for the post as president, delivered a speech that
was indicative of the government’s mindset.
“Allah will grant us this,” he said. “We will design
the new world order. We caught this opportunity now. Turkey is no longer the
old Turkey. Our alliance [between the AKP and the Nationalist Movement Party]
is on the path to Allah.
“After 2023 [when the next presidential and
parliamentary elections will be held], we will move so fast that they [the
West] will have to eat our dust. Are you ready to teach those [Western]
ambassadors [in Turkey], the plotting US and Europe, a lesson? Are you ready to
make the 21st century Turkey’s century?”
Last year, Putin signed a law paving the way for two
more terms as president, and in China, Xi Jinping has secured a third term as
president. In Turkey, there is the possibility that Erdogan will secure a
further term as president. With the talk of a new constitution, “the new
Turkey” could also become an Islamic republic.
As he demonstrated in his July meeting in Tehran with
Putin and Raisi, Erdogan is well on his way to becoming a permanent member of
the despots club.

Mauritanian Terrorist Charged with Death of American
Citizen and with Providing Material Support to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb
and Al-Murabitoun
December 10, 2022
Fawaz Ould Ahmed Ould Ahemeid, aka Ibrahim
Idress, aka Ibrahim Dix, 44, of
Mauritania, was arraigned earlier today in federal court in the Eastern
District of New York on a six-count indictment charging him with multiple
terrorism offenses, including for his roles in the March 7, 2015 attack on the
La Terrasse restaurant in Bamako, Mali, in which five people were killed; the
Aug. 7, 2015 attack on the Hotel Byblos in Sevare, Mali, in which 13
individuals – including five United Nations workers – were killed; and the Nov.
20, 2015 attack on the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako, Mali, in which 20 victims
were killed, including U.S. citizen Anita Ashok Datar. The defendant, who was
transferred to U.S. custody in Mali, arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport in
Queens, New York, on Dec. 9, 2022, and appeared today before U.S. Magistrate
Judge James R. Cho, who entered a permanent order of detention pending trial.
“Ahemeid planned and executed deadly attacks targeting
westerners, including Americans, and will now be brought to justice,” said
Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s
National Security Division. “Let this be a reminder to any who would use
violence against our people: no matter how far you run or how long you hide, we
will not relent in our efforts to hold you accountable.”
“Today, we have once again made clear that we are, and
will remain, steadfast in our commitment to working with our law enforcement
partners here and abroad to bring to justice those who commit violent acts of
terrorism targeting innocent American civilians, wherever they may be found,”
said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York.
"Bringing Ahemeid to the United States to face
the charges against him is an important step in achieving justice for those
harmed by acts of terrorism, including the American citizen killed in the
Radisson Blu Hotel attack," said Assistant Director Robert R. Wells of the
FBI's Counterterrorism Division. "The FBI will not be deterred by the
passage of time or geographical distance as we work with our partners to hold
those who commit acts of terrorism accountable."
As detailed in the indictment, the previously filed
criminal complaint and other publicly filed documents, Ahemeid joined AQIM in
or around 2007. Subsequently, Ahemeid planned and committed at least three
significant terrorist attacks against Western targets in Mali. On March 7,
2015, Ahemeid, armed with two AK-47 assault rifles, a pistol, and grenades,
committed an attack on the La Terrasse restaurant in Bamako, Mali, killing five
people. That same day, al-Murabitoun issued a public statement claiming
responsibility for the attack.
Following the La Terrasse attack, Ahemeid helped plan
and execute the Aug. 7, 2015 attack on the Hotel Byblos in Sevare, Mali,
including by conducting surveillance of the hotel prior to the attack. During
this attack, a lone gunman armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and equipped with
a suicide vest entered the Hotel Byblos and opened fire. The attack resulted in
the deaths of 13 individuals, including five United Nations workers. The gunman
was killed in the attack. Al-Murabitoun subsequently issued a public statement
claiming responsibility for the attack.
Finally, Ahemeid, along with others, planned and
oversaw the Nov. 20, 2015 terrorist attack on the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako,
Mali. Beginning in the morning of Nov. 20, 2015, two men attacked the Radisson
Blu, a hotel frequented by Western visitors. The attackers, wearing Western
clothing and armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades, moved from
floor to floor of the hotel, shooting innocent victims as they progressed.
Security forces responded to the scene and both attackers were ultimately
killed.
The attack resulted in the deaths of 20 victims,
including U.S. citizen Anita Ashok Datar. Datar, a guest at the Radisson Blu,
was shot multiple times and died at the scene as a result of the gunshot
wounds. Datar was a 41-year-old public health expert from Takoma Park,
Maryland, who was in Mali working for an international development firm
assisting the United States Agency for International Development. In addition
to the 20 deaths, the attack also wounded at least seven people.
Following the attack, AQIM issued a public statement
claiming responsibility for the attacks on behalf of AQIM and al-Murabitoun,
stating “Two heroes infiltrating the Radisson Hotel in Mali, may God accept
them. #Al-Qa’ida_in_West_Africa #Ansar_al_din #Al_Murabitun.” The tweet included photographs of the two
attackers holding AK-47s and each attacker’s nom de guerre.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Algor and Michael
Keilty is in charge of the prosecution, with assistance provided by Trial
Attorney Katie Sweeten of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism
Section.
The indictment charges the defendant with (1) the
murder of Anita Ashok Datar; (2) the unlawful use of firearms in connection
with a crime of violence; (3) causing the death of Anita Ashok Datar through
the use of a firearm; (4) conspiracy to provide material support to the
designated foreign terrorist organizations al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb
(AQIM) and al-Murabitoun; (5) provision and attempted provision of material
support to AQIM and al-Murabitoun; and (6) unlawful use of explosives. If
convicted, he faces a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison. A federal
district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S.
Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

We’ll Lose Nigeria Unless We Come Together And Reform
It —Sheikh Khalid, Former Chief Imam Of Apo Legislative Quarters Juma’at Mosque
By TAOFEEK LAWAL
Dec 10, 2022
I give glory to the Almighty making me what I am today
and for showing me the light to see the truth and abide by it. I have been
saying that things are wrong in Nigeria since the administration of former
President Goodluck Jonathan. But I wasn’t popular then because I was speaking
to my people (northerners) who were totally against Jonathan’s administration.
But I wasn’t speaking for Jonathan’s sake or because Jonathan was not from the
north or because he was not a Muslim; I was speaking up for Nigeria. At the
beginning of the current (Buhari’s) administration, I maintained my position
that whenever there is an attack against Nigerians, I will condemn it and call
the attention of the leaders to the need to do the right thing. Unfortunately,
the northern people and particularly those in power did not take kindly to my
submissions. They started criticising me for speaking the truth.
Now Nigerians have realised that it is not about where
power belongs or what geographical location the president comes from. It is a
matter of our country. Things are not going well. We are supposed to come
together, put all hands on deck and reform Nigeria or we risk losing the
country.
Our security is in danger, our economy is declining
and our unity is diminishing. If you have to bring together the presidential
candidates to sign a peace accord, it shows that the country and its democracy
are at risk. Under normal circumstances, the presidential candidates ought to
have the maturity to understand that it is Nigeria first and therefore not to
do anything that could put the country and its democracy in danger – if really
they want to serve the country. If they really love Nigeria, there is no need
to sign any peace accord or agreement because they are the ones who should be
role models and peace ambassadors for the country.

Suleman Shehbaz, the absconding son of Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif, returned to Pakistan in the early hours of Sunday after four

that would enable him to surrender before a trial court.
Suleman had been in London with his family since 2018

‘Faysal Bank Limited Likely To Get Islamic Banking
Licence This Month’
By Erum Zaidi
December 11, 2022
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) would likely
grant Faysal Bank Limited (FBL) a new license this month, allowing it to
operate as the country’s second-largest Islamic bank, its official said.
“The conversion of FBL’s operations to Islamic banking
is nearly complete. Ninety percent of the bank’s assets, deposits, and balance
sheet have been converted to Islamic finance. There is only one conventional
branch remaining out of our total of 650 branches, and it will be converted to
Islamic as early as next week,” Syed Majid Ali, chief financial officer at FBL
said in an interview with The News.
According to our plans and discussions with SBP, “we
may give up our current license after we convert 85–90 percent of our
conventional branches to Islamic”, he said. “We submitted an application for a
license to function as a bank that applies the interest-free principles of
Islamic finance in all its operations,” Ali added.

made amendable to judicial review by way of constitutional petitions filed
under Article 199 of the Constitution,” Justice Ijazul Ahsan noted while
deciding an appeal of a judge regarding his challenge to JCP decision.
Justice Ijaz was heading a two-member SC bench that
had taken up the appeal of former additional judge of the Islamabad High Court
and district and sessions judge Mohammad Azim Khan Afridi, who had challenged
the Oct 22, 2012 decision of the JCP against his confirmation as an IHC judge.

Islam has historical roots in Russia: Raisi
December 10, 2022
President Raisi sent a message to the Summit of the
Muslims of Russia on the occasion of commemorating the 1,100th year of the
presence of Islam in Russia. The message was read out by Haj Abolghasem
Doulabi, Raisi’s representative to the summit, according to the official
website of the Iranian presidency.
In the message, Ayatollah Raisi called Russia one of
the first foci of the presence of Islam in distant lands and stated, "We
Muslim Iranians are proud of ourselves that the historical city of Derbent,
which is the center of fusion and intersection of Russian, Iranian and Islamic
culture, is the first passage and the focal point of the presence of Muslims in
this vast land".
The religion of Islam appeared at a time in the
history of this world when the blackness and darkness of ignorance, corruption
and crookedness in the field of life had narrowed the human race and the
Prophet of Islam (PBUH) made this distortion of spirituality and morality, the
deposit of peace and security in the sphere of justice for humanity.

Muslim Graveyard In Andheri To Build Borewells To
Conserve Water
Dec 11, 2022
MUMBAI: A large Muslim graveyard with 1,600 burial
units in Andheri is paving the path for water conservation. The Andheri Muslim
Qabristan Masjid at Four Bungalows is taking the initiative to reduce its
consumption of BMC water by installing borewells in its premises.
During the 2016 water crisis in the city, TOI had
reported how the trustees had put up large banners advising people to
temporarily avoid watering graves, a common practice in Islamic burial grounds.
Well-known personalities like poet Kaifi Azmi, composer Khayyam, actors
Farooque Shaikh and Shaukat Kaifi and cinematographer Ishan Arya are laid to
rest at Four Bungalows Qabristan.
Trustee Babar Atik Kashmiri said, "Mosques which
are attached to graveyards typically require thousands of litres of water every
day. Scores of Namazis, who arrive for worship five times a day, perform
'wuzoo' (ablutions) before prayer. Hundreds of mourners who accompany the
deceased for burial, as well as people who visit the graves on a routine basis,
perform 'Wuzu' before entering the ground and after they leave. The plants and
shrubs upon the graves are also watered by visitors."

‘Muslims Need To Think…’: Mayawati On Mainpuri, Rampur
Bypoll Results
Dec 11, 2022
By HT News Desk
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday
wondered whether Samajwadi Party's win in the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll and
defeat in the Rampur assembly bypoll was a result of “internal collusion"
with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mayawati said the Muslim community needs to
think a lot so they can be “saved from being cheated” in the upcoming
elections.
In the recently held bypoll in Mainpuri, SP's Dimple
Yadav defeated her nearest rival BJP’s Raghuraj Singh Shakya by a margin of
2.88 lakh votes. The by-election was necessitated due to the death of Samajwadi
Party founder-leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was also Dimple Yadav’s
father-in-law.
The BJP, however, breached Samajwadi Party leader Azam
Khan's stronghold Rampur Sadar assembly seat for the first time. BJP's Akash
Saxena defeated Azam's nominee Asim Raza in a close battle by a margin of over
34,000 votes.

India engaging with Taliban for tackling humanitarian
crisis and restoring normalcy
By Khaama Press
December 10, 2022
Indian Embassy in Kabul resumed its functionality in
June 2022. Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision and
expressed hope for fruitful ties. Since then India has taken several
initiatives to resuscitate Afghanistan’s development and help the country in
tackling its humanitarian crisis. Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs
spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi said,” IEA (Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan)
welcomes decision by India to return diplomats and technical team to their
embassy in Kabul to continue their relations with the Afghan people and their
humanitarian assistance.”
Meanwhile, in a recent interview on the side-lines of
a conference of anti-Taliban Afghan leaders with the US and EU representatives,
the former Afghanistan Intelligence Chief Rahmatullah Nabil, warned that
Pakistani terror groups targeting India such as Jaish-e-Mohammad and
Lashkar-e-Taiba have shifted their bases to Afghanistan with help from the
Taliban. He warned that while engaging the Taliban was necessary for India in
its “own interests”, New Delhi should keep channels open with Afghanistan’s
former leaders as well, even though they are now out of power. He added that
“we are not in a position now to advise India, and they know their national
interest better. But they should not live in any illusion that the Taliban has
changed.”
This raises new concerns about safe havens to terror
modules in the neighbourhood of India. Nabil also asserted that these terror
outfits, once they get safe havens, would have more access to technology and
territory. India is willing to help restore normalcy in Afghanistan, but it is,
unlike other countries, is not interested in taking any side with the political
stakeholders. India has always pursued a policy of non-interference in the
internal affairs of any country and this is true for Afghanistan as well. It is
reflected in India’s willingness to engage with the Afghan Taliban for tackling
the humanitarian crisis in the country and restore the scuttled development
projects for resuscitating economic growth of the country. India’s priority is
promoting peace and development in Afghanistan with which it has long
historical, cultural and economic ties.

Expansion of Afghan Refugee Sponsorship Program; A
Pathway to Canada
By Nizamuddin Rezahi
December 10, 2022
The Canadian government and people have been extremely
generous to the people of Afghanistan. Their unconditional support has
continued for the people of Afghanistan over the past two decades across
different domains. Even after the Taliban’s takeover, they moved thousands of
vulnerable Afghan families to Canada through a so-called emergency program.
Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada introduced
a temporary federal program dedicated to Afghan nationals less than two months
ago, waiving the need for official refugee status, as long as the refugees meet
the Canadian government’s criteria to be privately sponsored.
However, the demand was so high that the program
reached its cap of 3,000 applications within the initial 20 or 30 minutes,
leaving many sponsors frustrated, who raised funds and took full preparation to
fill out an application.

Railway Transport, a Promising Export-Import Trade

According to the Afghanistan Railway Authority (ARA),
the country’s railway transport reached a total of 109,808 tons of import and

by the railway via Hairatan, Aqina and Torghundi trail trucks. 10,830 tons were
the import, and,1,498 tons of export goods, respectively.
As a landlocked country, Afghanistan has had critical
challenges in transporting commercial goods to and from the regional and
international markets. Normally, it took weeks and even months for the goods to
reach overseas markets. However, with the establishment of new railways linking
to the Central Asian countries, the problems have been mitigated to some
extent. Besides, the commercial items can reach destinations in a timely

How A British Explorer’s Search For An Ancient Lost
Arabian City Uncovered A Traveller, Carrying Fragments Of Celestial Bodies,
From The Stars Instead
Jonathan Gornall
December 11, 2022
LONDON: It was, in the words of a 1998 report
published in Scientific American, “the day the sands caught fire.”
The sands in question were at an isolated spot deep in
Saudi Arabia’s Rub Al-Khali, or Empty Quarter. The fire, which melted half a
square kilometre of desert and transformed it into black glass, fell from the
sky in one of the most dramatic meteorite strikes the planet has ever
experienced.
Geologists continue to debate exactly when the
so-called Wabar meteorite fell to Earth — the theories range from 450 to 6,400
years ago. However, we can be almost certain that this ancient traveller,
carrying fragments of celestial bodies that formed in the earliest days of our
solar system, originated in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
