----------

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday unveiled its manifesto for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, promising a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), enhanced financial support for women, and large-scale development initiatives across the state.

Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BKP president Dilip Saikia and others were present at the ceremony held at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati.

The ‘Sankalp Patra’, released at an event in Guwahati, outlines 31 key commitments aimed at economic growth, welfare expansion, and infrastructure development.

Top Promises: UCC, jobs and women’s welfare

CM Sarma said the party aims to make Assam the “brightest state”. He said that the BJP plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code in Assam, excluding Sixth Schedule and tribal areas. He also announced steps to curb “love jihad”. Sarma said the goal is to make Assam a “self-reliant and leading state” contributing strongly to national growth.

The BJP said the manifesto has been prepared using around 2.45 lakh suggestions collected from people across the state, reflecting grassroots inputs. Among the major announcements:

• Rs. 3,000 monthly aid for women under the Orunodoi scheme (up from Rs. 1,250)

• Two lakh government jobs over the next five years

• Rs. 25,000 financial assistance to support 40 lakh women under the Lakhpati Didi scheme

• Expansion of healthcare and education with “One District, One Medical College, One University, One Engineering College”

• Rs. 18,000 crore investment in the first two years to tackle floods

‘Roadmap built on decade of delivery’: Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who released the manifesto, said it is not just a list of promises but a plan built on governance experience. She highlighted Assam’s economic progress over the past decade, noting that the state’s GDP has more than tripled and per capita income has seen significant growth. She said the growth reflects strong coordination between the Centre and the state government. According to Sitharaman:

• State GDP increased from Rs. 2.24 lakh crore in 2015-16 to Rs. 7.41 lakh crore in 2025-26

• Per capita income rose from Rs. 1.03 lakh in 2020-21 to Rs. 1.59 lakh in 2024-25

• Assam’s share of central taxes increased to Rs. 50,000 crore in 2025-26

• Total central transfers to the state since 2014 reached Rs. 5.61 lakh crore

Assam Poll Schedule and Political Battle

Voting for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam will take place in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.

The BJP-led NDA, which includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is aiming for a third consecutive term.

The election is expected to see a direct contest between the ruling alliance and the opposition Congress across the 126-member Assembly.

Thousands of US Army paratroopers arrive in Middle East as buildup intensifies

March 30, 2026

-------------

WASHINGTON: Thousands of soldiers from the ?US Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division have started arriving in the Middle East, two US officials told Reuters on Monday, as President Donald Trump weighs his next steps in the war against Iran.

Reuters first reported on March 18 that Trump’s administration was considering deploying thousands of additional US troops to the Middle East, a move that would expand options to include the deployment of forces inside Iranian territory.

The paratroopers, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, add to the thousands of additional sailors, Marines and ?Special Operations forces sent ?to the region. Over the weekend, about 2,500 Marines ?arrived ?in ?the Middle ?East.

The ?officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, did not say specifically where the soldiers were deploying to, but the move was expected.

The additional Army soldiers include elements of the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters, some logistics and other support, and one brigade combat team.

No decision has been made to send troops into Iran, but they will build up capacity for potential future operations in the region, one of the sources said.

OPTIONS FOR TRUMP

The soldiers could be ?used for several purposes in the Iran war, including an ?attempt to seize Kharg Island, the hub for ?90 percent of Iran’s oil exports. Earlier this month, Reuters reported there ?had been discussions within the Trump administration ?about an operation to take the island. Such a move would be highly ?risky, since Iran can reach the island with missiles and drones.

Reuters has previously reported the administration has discussed using ground forces inside Iran to extract highly enriched uranium, though that option could mean US troops deeper inside Iran for potentially longer periods of time, trying to dig out material that ?is deep underground.

The internal Trump administration discussions have also included potentially putting US troops inside Iran to secure safe passage for ?oil tankers through ?the Strait of Hormuz. While that mission would be accomplished primarily through air and naval forces, it could also mean deploying US troops to Iran’s shoreline. Trump said on Monday the United States was in talks with a “more reasonable regime” to end the war in Iran, but repeated his warning to Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or risk US attacks on its oil wells and power plants.

Any use of US ground troops — even for a limited mission — could pose significant political risks for Trump, given low American public support for the Iran campaign and Trump’s own pre-election promises to avoid entangling the US in new Middle East conflicts.

Since operations started on February 28, ?the US has carried out strikes against ?more than 11,000 targets. More than 300 US troops have been injured and 13 service members have been killed as part of Operation Epic Fury.

Saudi Arabia, Arab and Islamic countries condemn Israeli restrictions on freedom of worship in Jerusalem

------------

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and a number of Arab and Islamic countries have condemned Israel’s restriction on freedom of worship in Jerusalem, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Türkiye, Qatar, and the UAE condemned, in the strongest terms, and rejected the continued restrictions imposed by Israel on the freedom of worship for Muslims and Christians in occupied Jerusalem. The restrictions include the prevention of Muslim worshippers from accessing Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif, and the prevention of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Custos of the Holy Land from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate the Palm Sunday Mass.

The move sparked an international outcry that led Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reverse the ban for the remainder of Holy Week.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said Israeli police prevented Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Friar Francesco Ielpo from entering the Holy Sepulchre, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead. The police cited security concerns related to the war in Iran for the ban.

“As a result, and for the first time in centuries, the Heads of the Church were prevented from celebrating the Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre,” it said in a statement.

Netanyahu posted on social media just after midnight that he instructed relevant authorities to grant full and immediate access to the cardinal.

“Today, out of special concern for his safety, Cardinal Pizzaballa was asked ?to refrain from ?holding Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre,” he said.

“Even though I understand ?this ?concern, ?as soon ?as ?I learned about the incident with Cardinal Pizzaballa, I instructed the authorities to enable the Patriarch to hold services as he wishes.”

Vatican second-in-command Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and its top diplomat, Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, met with ambassador Yaron Sideman and “regrets were expressed regarding this incident, concerning which clarifications were provided,” the Vatican said.

Israeli police said all holy sites in Jerusalem’s Old City – including those sacred to Christians, Muslims and Jews – had been closed to worshippers since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran, particularly locations without bomb shelters.

UK anti-Muslim hate move is welcome but now the real work begins

Afzal Khan

30 Mar, 2026

As Muslims, we do not need official statistics to tell us that overall religious hate crime is at an all-time high. We know it, feel it, and live it, writes Afzal Khan. [GETTY]

-------------

Earlier this month, the Labour government took the historic step of adopting a non-statutory definition of anti-Muslim hostility – seven years after the previous Conservative government committed to doing so.

This definition was developed by an expert working group that spent months tirelessly consulting Muslims and non-Muslims, legal experts, academics, and sociologists. They were tasked with devising a definition that could, as accurately as possible, encompass the structural discrimination, inequality, and exclusion Muslims face in political, social, and civic life.

Anti-Muslim hostility, the preferred terminology used by the government because it more precisely describes the issue, has been defined as “intentionally engaging in, assisting or encouraging criminal acts… that are directed at Muslims because of their religion or those perceived to be Muslim”. This includes situations where the perception is based on assumptions about ethnicity, race or appearance.

It incorporates “prejudicial stereotyping”, treating Muslims or those perceived to be Muslim as “a collective group defined by negative characteristics with the intention of encouraging hatred against them”. This process is known as racialisation and too often leads to the discriminatory targeting of markers of Muslim identity, from thobes and hijabs to beards and brown skin.

The definition also recognises that “engaging in unlawful discrimination” that is “intended to disadvantage Muslims in public and economic life” constitutes anti-Muslim hostility. This is significant, given that in the UK Muslims are more likely to live in poverty; have to submit an average of 60% more job applications to get a positive response from an employer than a white British person, and are even charged more for car insurance if their name is Mohammed, than if their name is John.

Stopping hate

Of course, we already have legislation that provides important protections for everyone, but legislation alone is not enough – especially as much of the hostility many Muslims face on a daily basis falls below the criminal threshold, from being abused on social media for wearing traditional Arab clothes in an ad campaign to being accused of trying to dominate British society by praying in Trafalgar Square.

A UK-wide, government-endorsed, non-statutory definition should form the basis of wider cultural, educational, and preventative efforts necessary to prevent this hatred from becoming further entrenched in our society.

It has not been easy getting to a position where we can now define the racism Muslims face - I know this firsthand. I was one of those involved in the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims who first set out to define Islamophobia in 2018, and since then, I’ve lobbied five Prime Ministers and eight Communities Secretaries just to get this definition.

Along the way, far-right activists, Conservative ministers and MPs have shouted from the sidelines about the disastrous consequences of having a definition of the hate Muslims face. They have falsely claimed that it would be a “blasphemy law by the backdoor”, despite specifically protecting people’s freedom of expression to criticise Islam.

Despite all the bad faith actors and misinformation, the Labour government persisted, steadfast in its resolve to do what previous Conservative governments failed to achieve: tackling anti-Muslim hostility.

Whilst it is vital to define a problem in order to address it, this is certainly not the same as solving it.

Rebuilding trust among British Muslims

The next steps will be crucial, not just for rooting out the deep-rooted prejudice and discrimination Muslims face in British society, but also for the Labour Party to rebuild trust within Muslim communities.

The Labour Government has committed £4 million to fund programmes that directly tackle anti-Muslim hostility and to implement this definition. It will also appoint a Special Representative on anti-Muslim hostility to engage with Muslim communities on this, and strengthen the understanding, reporting of, and response to the problem of racism against Muslims.

This is alongside the up to £40 million allocated to security, CCTV, fencing, alarms, and floodlights for mosques, Muslim schools, and community centres in response to an increase in arson, vandalism, and targeting of Muslim spaces.

This couldn’t be more timely. Just last month, in my constituency, someone entered Manchester Central Mosque during the evening Taraweeh prayers held in the holy month of Ramadan, armed with an axe and other weapons. Thankfully, the incident did not escalate, and no one was hurt. However, we might not be as fortunate next time. In fact, just the day after the attempted attack, a Muslim community centre in Worcester was firebombed.

Every year, hate crime statistics are published and broken down by religious group, and every year we read the same repeated headlines: ‘Record levels of hate crimes targeted at Muslims’, ‘Muslims subject to more hate crimes than any other religious group’.

As Muslims, we do not need official statistics to tell us that overall religious hate crime is at an all-time high. We know it, feel it, and live it. While not every Muslim experiences hate crime incidents, all of us face increasing levels of intolerance and prejudice. You do not have to look far or delve too deeply into people’s lives to hear accounts of this.

Just last month, during a football match between Leeds United and Manchester City, Muslim players were openly heckled as they broke their Ramadan fast. These breaks were introduced in 2021, without much fanfare, to support Muslim footballers. However, the incident revealed that while they are often idolised when scoring winning goals, it is not the case when they take a few minutes to observe their faith.

This violence, hate, and prejudice are not what Britain is about. We are not an intolerant society. We believe in the merits of multiculturalism. We recognise that different beliefs and ways of life enrich our communities, not deplete them.

We all have a duty to speak out against hate and division. Whereas previous Conservative governments not only failed to address Islamophobia but also actively encouraged and promoted it, we saw the consequences – a 375% rise in hate crimes against Muslims. Conversely, under a Labour government, we have a Prime Minister who has actively spoken out against the increasing hate directed at Muslims.

Condemnation is just the start of the long journey ahead of us. With this definition in place, the government must now focus its efforts on engaging with the very Muslim community this definition is meant to support, identifying practices in public policy and institutions that discriminate against Muslims, and rooting out the deep-seated racism Muslims in Britain face.

Now the real work begins.

Terrorism concerns pushes Islamic charity in U.S. to cut ties with international group

31 Mar, 2026

By Stephen Dinan

U.S. Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, speaks to press prior to a closed executive session of the Committee, Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, on Capitol Hill in Washington. In a Sept. 20, letter to Comptroller …

-----------

The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee took a victory lap Monday after a major Islamic charity confirmed it has cut ties with an international organization over fears of links to terrorism and antisemitic activity.

Islamic Relief USA, which bills itself as the largest Muslim charity in the country, said in court papers that it has moved to sever its participation in all activities of its former partner, Islamic Relief Worldwide.

IRUSA said it had to act after becoming convinced that its tax-exempt status would be threatened if it continued to maintain any links with IRW. It cited the Ways and Means Committee’s pressure as a major reason why the IRS was looking into the outfit.

Chairman Jason Smith celebrated the change.

“IRUSA’s decision to sever financial ties is a significant response that would never come about but for our committee’s oversight,” the Missouri Republican said.

Issues with Islamic charities have percolated for decades, but they have intensified since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the massive retaliatory attack on the Gaza Strip.

In 2024, Mr. Smith asked the IRS to review several organizations over their activities.

He said this week that some of the others he flagged, including the Americans for Justice in Palestine Educational Foundation and American Muslims for Palestine, should follow the lead of IRUSA.

“The Ways and Means Committee will not cease our efforts to expose wrongdoing in our tax-exempt sector to ensure American taxpayers are not subsidizing illegal activities,” Mr. Smith said.

IRW, based in Britain, bills itself as the center of a federation of relief agencies. On its website’s “where we work” section, it says it’s active in eight countries in Asia, 10 in Africa, four in Europe and six in the Middle East.

Mr. Smith said Israel has accused IRW of funneling money to Hamas, and the State Department in 2020 cut ties with IRW over antisemitism concerns.

IRUSA is a 501(c)(3) charity that used to partner with IRW, but has taken steps to divorce itself starting in 2019, when it signed agreements of separation.

In September 2024, 11 months after Hamas attacked Israel, Mr. Smith asked the IRS to investigate IRUSA’s ties to IRW, citing the global body’s potential support for terrorist organizations.

He renewed the request in October 2025.

IRUSA said there’s no evidence that it assisted any of the global organization’s questionable projects, but the U.S. outfit said it asked IRW to engage in negotiations to ensure a full separation.

In a lawsuit filed against IRW last week, IRUSA said the global organization has refused to enter into negotiations. Even more egregious, the U.S. outfit said, IRW has started fundraising in the U.S., confusing American donors.

“IRW’s conduct has deliberately and maliciously jeopardized IRUSA’s reputation and mission through fraudulent and illegal conduct,” the U.S. organization said in the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan.

In a statement to The Washington Times, IRUSA said it shared Mr. Smith’s goals of accountability and transparency, and that’s why it filed the lawsuit against its former global partner.

“In cooperation with U.S. authorities and in the interest of its donors and beneficiaries, IRUSA proactively moved to sever all ties with IRW,” the organization said. “As documented in IRUSA’s lawsuit, the allegations against IRW negatively impact the American Muslim donor community and beneficiaries who need IRUSA’s generosity.”

IRW, for its part, said it operates as “a purely humanitarian organization” and rejected the accusation that its assistance has been funneled to support terrorist organizations.

“We do not recognize that characterization of our organization and have consistently rejected such claims. Islamic Relief operates to high standards of governance, compliance and oversight across all our programs,” the organization said.

Dozens killed in deadly gold mine attack in South Sudan

31 Mar, 2026

At least 73 people have been killed in a brutal attack on a gold mining site in South Sudan, highlighting ongoing insecurity in the world’s youngest nation.

The assault targeted the Khor Kaltan mining area, around 70 kilometres southwest of the capital Juba, over the weekend. According to Vice President James Wani Igga, at least 25 others were seriously injured.

In a statement, Igga called for urgent medical evacuations for the wounded and announced plans for an investigation into the attack. He said authorities must identify those responsible and determine their motives.

The perpetrators remain unclear, with conflicting accounts emerging. A security source suggested the involvement of forces linked to Riek Machar, while his representatives have denied responsibility and instead accused the army loyal to President Salva Kiir.

Since gaining independence in 2011, South Sudan has faced repeated cycles of violence, often driven by political rivalries and armed factions. Recent months have seen renewed tensions, particularly in regions such as Jonglei State.

The latest attack underscores the fragile security situation and the risks faced by civilians, especially in remote areas where competition over natural resources like gold continues to fuel conflict.

Malaysian peacekeepers in Lebanon halt patrols after attacks

31 Mar 2026

Malaysia’s MALBATT 850-13 suspends operational movements in south Lebanon following fatal attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers, with security levels enhanced.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) 850-13 contingent in southern Lebanon has been ordered to suspend all operational movements.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the directive followed UNIFIL headquarters orders after two separate attacks on peacekeepers within 24 hours.

One incident involved a projectile explosion near Adchit Al Qusayr, while an improvised explosive device blast killed three Indonesian UN peacekeepers.

“The incidents have claimed the lives of peacekeepers and caused serious injuries to several others,” Mohamed Khaled said in a statement.

He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The minister stressed that any attack on peacekeepers violates international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Security levels for all contingents in the mission area have now been enhanced.

These measures include strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures and strengthened Rules of Engagement.

They also involve a temporary halt to patrol movements and increased Force Protection measures, with continuous situation assessment.

Mohamed Khaled confirmed all MALBATT 850-13 members are currently safe, with their safety as the government’s top priority.

All assignments are now conducted cautiously based on situational assessments and UNIFIL operational instructions.

Gujarat Muslim outfit plans protests, legal fight against UCC Bill passed by Assembly

Mar 31, 2026

The Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti – an umbrella body of different organisations of the community in the state – said it will organise protests across the state against the “anti-Muslim” Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill passed by the Gujarat Assembly last week and challenge the validity of the legislation in court.

The organisation said it will submit a memorandum to Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat requesting him to reject the Bill and file petitions in the Supreme Court and the Gujarat High Court challenging it.

The samiti said Muslims across the State will express their opposition to the UCC Bill by wearing black bands on their right arms during the Jumma (Friday) prayers on April 3.

“Ulama-e-Kiram will lead prayers (Yaum-e-Dua) against the UCC Bill, and a specific sermon (Khutbah) prepared by Mufti Ahmed Devla and other prominent Muftis will be delivered,” Sagirahmed Ansari from Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti told The Indian Express.

Delegations of religious, social, and political leaders, lawyers, and organisation heads will submit memorandums to district collectors across Gujarat on April 6. Silent sit-in protests will be held outside collector offices across the state on the occasion and video messages on the protest will be circulated online. Seminars and workshops will be organised to educate the community on how the UCC might affect Sharia laws, Ahmed said.

The samiti said it will also seek cooperation from other religious and social organisations, presenting the issue as a matter of civil and constitutional rights rather than just a religious one.

“The UCC should apply to all citizens of the country across its territory. The so-called UCC Bill passed by the Gujarat Assembly, which is pending the assent of Governor, is not the UCC as provided in the Constitution,” Maulana Khadim Lalpuri, convenor of Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti alleged.

The Article 44 of the Constitution says that UCC must be for all citizens of the country and it must be implemented throughout the territory of India, he pointed out. Article-44 does not impose an obligation on the State (country) to impose UCC and it states that ‘the State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India’, he said.

“First adopted in Uttarakhand and now replicated in Gujarat, the Bill was deliberately misnamed as UCC even though it is not. In Uttarakhand, the issue is pending before the High Court,” he said.

The samiti has also demanded the state government to put the UCC panel report in public domain.

“The evident timing of enactment of bringing in such unconstitutional Bill also lays bare the malafide and mischievous intent behind it. Such a Bill is brought just a couple of months before the local body elections only to reap political and electoral benefits by catering to majoritarian groups and by subjugating the minority-Muslims,” he alleged.

Some states misusing OBC quota by including Muslims: Rajya Sabha MP K Laxman

Mar 31, 2026

THE OPPOSITION on Monday walked out of the Rajya Sabha after BJP MP K Laxman raised the issue of some states “misusing” OBC reservation by including Muslims in the category, and demanded that the government order a comprehensive review of such practices. “Communal reservation cannot be entertained,” he said.

The Opposition staged a walkout out after they were not given the opportunity to raise a point of order after Laxman’s Zero Hour address. Following this, leader of the House J P Nadda said the Opposition was not interested in discussion of debate.

Laxman said the entire Muslim population in Karnataka was treated as one caste and given 4% reservation. In West Bengal, nearly 97% of Muslim communities have been included in OBC list. In Tamil Nadu, 95% of Muslims are covered under OBC list, with 3.5% quota for backward Muslims. In Kerala, Muslims have been listed as a caste in OBC list and their reservation raised from 3% to 12%. In Telangana, aside from the Muslims included in the OBC list, Congress government also extended 4% reservation exclusively for Muslims, which the HC struck down, Laxman said.

He requested the government to order a comprehensive review of such religion-based reservation.

Mar 31, 2026

Faisal Malik

MUMBAI: Shabbir Ahmed Ansari, national president of the All-India Muslim OBC Organisation and a prominent social activist, passed away last Sunday after battling cancer for over a year. He was laid to rest in Jalna.

The 79-year-old, widely regarded as a towering figure in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) movement, dedicated almost five decades of his life to advancing social justice and the welfare of backward communities. As president of the All-India Muslim OBC Organisation, he played a pivotal role in mobilising grassroots support across Maharashtra and beyond on issues of reservation and equal rights. He was instrumental in advocating the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations and worked to secure the inclusion of backward sections within the Muslim community under the OBC category despite facing strong opposition.

Recalling his contributions, Dr Zahir Kazi, president of Anjuman-I-Islam who was once associated with the OBC movement, said that Ansari achieved a major breakthrough in 1994. “His movement bore fruit when the then chief minister Sharad Pawar decided to extend the Mandal Commission recommendations to sections of the Muslim community,” he said. “Many communities such as the Mehtars, Chhapparbands, Kolis, Malis, Bagwans, Julahas, Momins and Ansaris benefited from this decision. Today, thousands of Muslim youths have greater access to education and employment thanks to Ansari’s sustained efforts.”

While commissions such as the Mandal Commission and the Sachar Committee documented the socio-economic backwardness of Muslims, it was Ansari who transformed these concerns into a sustained and organised movement for social justice, noted Kazi, adding that the contributions of the socialist remained unrecognised, as he did not receive any state or national honours.

Socialist leader and educationist Kapil Patil highlighted the wide influence of Ansari’s work, including the support he got from veteran actor Dilip Kumar. “Dilip Kumar was so impressed with Ansari’s work that he used to attend all the programmes and meetings organised by him across the country and encourage him by even addressing those gatherings,” he said. “This continued for as many as ten years.”

Despite his social impact, Ansari led a modest life. “He lived in a tin-roofed house in Jalna for years. It was only later, when his daughter became a doctor that the house was rebuilt,” said Patil.

Emphasising his legacy, Patil said, “Because of him, the most marginalised sections of the Muslim community got access to education, jobs and political participation for the first time. Thousands of students have gone on to become doctors and engineers. In my view, he deserved the Bharat Ratna.”

Veteran journalist Sarfaraz Arzoo, who was once part of the OBC movement, said that Ansari made a major contribution to the upliftment of backward Muslim communities. “He changed the definition of the OBC community by arguing that Muslims should get reservation not on the basis of their religion but based on their caste and profession,” he said. “The distinction between religion and profession was demolished by him, which paved the way for reservation for thousands of Muslims from the backward classes.”

A condolence meeting has been organised by Ansari’s well-wishers in remembrance of him and his work. It will take place on April 4 at Khilafat House.

BJP MP claims all Muslims get OBC reservation in non-NDA states

Mar 31, 2026

BJP lawmaker K Laxman on Monday alleged in the the Rajya Sabha that several opposition-ruled states were including all Muslims in quotas meant for Other Backward Classes (OBC)s, thereby flouting established conditions for reservation, which led to the opposition walking out of the House.

Speaking during Zero Hour, Laxman said OBC reservation was being misused in the name of religion and that states such as Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had included all Muslims in the quotas meant for OBCs.

He stated that this inclusion contravenes the reservation policy, which does not provide quotas based on religion, and demanded a review. He also cited judgments by the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu high courts that questioned the practice of extending the OBC quota to all Muslims.

“There should be a comprehensive review of such religion-based reservations,” Laxman said, amid protests from the opposition.

The opposition walked out in protest, which prompted the leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, to criticise the move. He said the opposition, particularly the Congress, has been “disrespectful of the Constitution and parliamentary proceedings.”

He criticised the walkout, saying the INDIA alliance is neither interested in debates nor does it respect democratic values or the Constitution. Nadda alleged that opposition parties consider Muslims a vote bank and indulge in appeasement politics.

In the past, the BJP had criticised the TMC government in Bengal for including several Muslim groups in the OBC list between 2010 and 2012. In Karnataka, too, the party had targeted the Congress government for providing 4% reservation to Muslims in government contracts.

Mosque on 'pond land' in UP's Sitapur demolished in pre-dawn action

Mar 31, 2026

SITAPUR: A mosque allegedly constructed on government land 12 years ago was demolished by the administration here early Monday after a prior notice went unheeded, officials said.

Additional District Magistrate Nitish Kumar, along with other senior officials, reached the site in the Leharpur area of the district around 3 am.

The demolition exercise was carried out amid tight security, they said.

According to the administration, the structure in Naigaon Behati village had been built illegally on land designated as a pond.

The action followed an order by a tehsil court after a complaint was filed by the Gram Sabha.

Around 500 police personnel, including senior officers, were deployed to maintain law and order during the operation, they said.

The dispute over the structure had been pending for a long time, with the Gram Sabha alleging that the mosque stood on land earmarked for a pond and a cemetery.

A case in this regard was filed on December 18, 2025.

On January 6, 2026, the court declared the construction illegal and ordered eviction, issuing a notice to the concerned party to vacate the premises and remove essential items within a stipulated period, officials said.

After the deadline expired without compliance, the district administration proceeded with the demolition, they added.

Authorities said a notice had also been issued under Section 67 of the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, but the construction was not removed, prompting action.

Maulana Abdul Rahman, associated with the mosque, declined to comment and described the matter as political.

Justifying the early-morning action, the ADM said the site is located along a main road, and the timing was chosen to avoid traffic disruption.

He added that the action was taken in accordance with the law and that removing encroachments from government land remains a priority.

"The situation in the area is currently under control, and the administration is constantly monitoring it," Kumar said.

Israeli troops, UN peacekeepers killed as as Israel invasion of Lebanon continues

March 31, 2026

PARIS: Ongoing fighting, as Israel invades southern Lebanon, has killed UN peacekeepers and Israeli soldiers, officials said Tuesday.

Three United Nations peacekeepers from Indonesia were killed in two separate incidents in southern Lebanon.

The UN Security Council is set to discuss the situation after three UN peacekeepers were killed in southern Lebanon in less than 24 hours, although it’s not clear who was responsible.

Two peacekeepers were killed on Monday after an explosion from an unknown origin destroyed their vehicle near Bani Hayyan in south Lebanon, the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL said in a statement. Two other soldiers were wounded in the blast.

Another Indonesian soldier was killed overnight Sunday into Monday when a projectile exploded near one of the group's positions close to the southern Lebanese village of Adchit al-Qusayr. Another peacekeeper was critically injured at the time.

Israel says it is trying to push Hezbollah militants, who have fired rockets and drones across the border, out of southern Lebanon in a campaign that Israeli officials suggest could become a prolonged occupation.

Israel military says four soldiers killed in south Lebanon

Israel said early Tuesday that another four of its soldiers had been killed in the offensive.

A military statement named three soldiers from the same battalion who “fell during combat,” and a separate statement said another soldier whose name had not yet been cleared for publication had died in the same incident.

Another soldier was severely wounded and a reservist moderately wounded, according to the second statement.

Trump says US is negotiating with Iran’s parliamentary speaker, who denies talks

March 31, 2026

DUBAI: US President Donald Trump said the US is negotiating with Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, in an interview with the New York Post published Monday.

Qalibaf rebutted the claim in a post on X. So did a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

Qalibaf said the US was promoting “desires as news while threatening our nation at the same time.”

The former Revolutionary Guard commander was previously floated as Washington’s negotiating partner, but has denied Iran is talking to the US and said Pakistan-facilitated discussions were merely a cover for American troop deployments.

Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said no negotiations had taken place, while confirming that intermediaries had delivered a set of proposals to Iran.

He said Iran would “not forget the betrayal that was inflicted upon diplomacy in two instances within less than a year,” referencing the June 2025 and February 2026 indirect talks that preceded attacks by Israel and the US.

Trump on Monday threatened widespread destruction of Iran’s energy resources and other vital infrastructure, including desalination plants, if a deal to end the war with Tehran is not reached “shortly.”

What we know about Iran’s parliamentary speaker Qalibaf

Long before he became Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf went on a charm offensive for almost two decades, portraying himself as a hard-liner the West could do business within the Islamic Republic.

“I would like the West to change its attitude to Iran and trust Iran, and rest assured that there’s an attitude in Iran to advance issues through dialogue,” he told London-based newspaper The Times in 2008.

With the war in its fifth week after the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran started in late February, US President Donald Trump is pressuring Iran’s government to reach a deal to end the war and claiming to be making diplomatic progress.

Questions also remain as to what power Qalibaf has within Iran’s theocracy, shattered after the Feb. 28 Israeli airstrike that killed the 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, now Iran’s new supreme leader, has backed Qalibaf through his repeated and failed presidential campaigns. Still, multiple centers of power within Iran’s theocracy now likely vie for control of the Islamic Republic — and uncertainties remain over Mojtaba Khamenei’s status as he has yet to be seen after reportedly being wounded.

Qalibaf has been tied to the crackdown against protesters calling for change within Iran’s government and has seen corruption allegations swirl around him during his time in office.

Trump may just be looking for an Iranian version of Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez, who took over after the US military seized then Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January.

“Many Iranians despise Ghalibaf; diplomats see him as pragmatic,” wrote analyst Michael Rubin, using a different transliteration for the politician’s last name.

“Those diplomats confuse pragmatism with opportunism. Ghalibaf is a survivor. He sees in Trump someone who can help him achieve what late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei denied him: the presidency or some equivalent interim leadership role.”

Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, believed close to the Guard, last week described reports in Western media as a “political bomb” meant to put the country’s leaders in disarray.

“Qalibaf was introduced as a negotiating party in order to present a contradictory and non-unified image of Iran,” Tasnim said. “The mention of Qalibaf’s name was clearly intended to create internal divisions within Iran and to provoke conflict among political forces.”

Rise within Iran’s theocracy

Qalibaf was born on Aug. 23, 1961 in the city of Torqabeh in Iran’s northeastern Razavi Khorasan province to a father who was a shopkeeper — not a member of the Shiite clergy that seized power in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Like many young men of his generation, he joined the paramilitary Guard during the country’s 1980s war with Iraq, quickly rising through the ranks. After the conflict, he served as the head of the Guard’s construction arm, Khatam Al-Anbia, for several years, leading efforts to rebuild.

Trained as a pilot, he then served as the head of the Guard’s air force. In 1999, he cosigned a letter to reformist President Mohammad Khatami amid student protests in Tehran over the government’s closure of a reformist newspaper and a subsequent security force crackdown.

The letter warned Khatami that the Guard would take action unilaterally unless he agreed to put down the demonstrations.

Violence around the protests, the first in a string of widening demonstrations over the last decades, saw several people killed, hundreds wounded and thousands arrested.

Qalibaf then became the head of Iran’s police, modernizing the force and implementing the country’s 110 emergency phone number. However, a leaked recording of a later meeting between Qalibaf and members of the Guard’s volunteer Basij force, had him claiming that he ordered gunfire be used against demonstrators in 2003 and praising the violence used in Iran’s 2009 Green Movement protests.

Iran’s then President Hassan Rouhani hinted at the 2003 incident when the two sparred in a 2017 presidential election debate.

“There was an argument that you were saying that the students should come then we can pincer attack to them and finish the job,” Rouhani said at the time.

Alternative to Ahmadinejad

As Tehran’s mayor from 2005 to 2017, Qalibaf faced corruption allegations, including over around $3.5 million being donated to a foundation run by his wife.

However, he also used his prominence to travel to the World Economic Forum and even praised New York City in an interview with The Financial Times, undoubtedly raising eyebrows among other hard-liners. His opponents claimed Qalibaf was like Reza Pahlavi, a hard-charging soldier who became shah in 1925 and rapidly pushed to Westernize Persia and rename it Iran before handing power to his son Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Qalibaf didn’t outright reject the comparison.

“If authoritarianism means when collective sense reaches a plan and decision, I’m very determined and firm in carrying it out,” Qalibaf told The Financial Times in 2008, casting himself as an alternative to hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. “When the expediency of the society is in carrying a project, then I’m very firm and show little flexibility and don’t let that collective sense be marred or disarrayed.”

Qalibaf ran in presidential elections in 2005, 2013, 2017 and 2024, but despite the failures of those campaigns, US diplomats suggested that he enjoyed the support of Mojtaba Khamenei, according to diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks.

“Mojtaba reportedly has long maintained a very close relationship with Tehran Mayor and presidential hopeful Mohammad Baqr Qalibaf; Mojtaba was reportedly the ‘backbone’ of Qalibaf’s past and continuing election campaigns,” an August 2008 cable read. “Mojtaba is said to help Qalibaf as an adviser, financier, and provider of senior-level political support. His support for and closeness to Qalibaf reportedly remains undiminished.”

With Khamenei now Iran’s new supreme leader, Qalibaf’s position may be significantly boosted.

Floated as a possible negotiator

Trump last week pulled back from a 48-hour deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, as media reports suggested that Qalibaf may be a possible Iranian contact for the US government. Qalibaf himself has denied any talks are ongoing.

Surprisingly, unlike many officials within Iran’s government, Qalibaf’s name is not on any US bounty.

It remains unclear whether the Israelis view Qalibaf as a target. As parliamentary speaker, Qalibaf praised the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, saying that it showed the “Zionist regime will never have peace until the day it is annihilated.”

Iran panel approves Hormuz toll plan

March 31, 2026

PARIS: Iranian state media reported that a parliamentary commission had approved plans to impose tolls on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway vital to oil and gas shipments that has been effectively closed due to the Middle East war.

Citing a member of the parliament’s security commission, state TV said the plan involved, among other things, “financial arrangements and rial toll systems” and “implementing the sovereign role of Iran”, as well as cooperation with Oman on the other side of the strait.

Fars news agency earlier quoted the chairman of the parliamentary civil affairs committee as saying that Iran must collect fees to ensure the security of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Since ?the start of ?the ?US-Israeli ?war ?on Iran, ?Tehran has disrupted maritime transit through the strait for vessels it says are linked to its war adversaries and their allies.

Maritime monitors indicate that a handful of vessels are still crossing daily through the strait, which is guarded by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, with some taking a Tehran-approved route through the waterway.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar announced this week that Iran has allowed 20 more ships to pass through Hormuz, noting the move would help usher stability in the conflict-ridden region.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump last week claimed 10 oil tankers were allowed transit the Strait of Hormuz as an apparent goodwill gesture in negotiation with Iran.

Trump made the comments at a Cabinet meeting in the White House, elaborating on what he had previously described as a “present” ?from Tehran.

Fire extinguished on Kuwaiti oil tanker at Dubai Port: Dubai Media Office

March 31, 2026

KUWAIT CITY: An Iranian attack sparked a fire on a Kuwaiti oil tanker at Dubai Port, state media reported on Tuesday, as Tehran continues its campaign in the Gulf in response to US-Israeli strikes.

“The Kuwaiti giant crude oil tanker was subjected to a direct and malicious Iranian attack while in the anchorage area of Dubai Port in the UAE,” official news agency KUNA reported, citing Kuwait’s state-owned oil company.

There were no injuries, according to the report, and Dubai Media Office later comfirmed that firefighters had extinguished the blaze.

KUNA reported the tanker was fully laden at the time of the attack, which had caused “material damage to the ship’s hull” and “the possibility of an oil spill in the surrounding waters.”

Kuwait’s military also said on Tuesday its air defenses were responding to “hostile missile and drone attacks,” according to an X post.

The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation confirmed that the fire caused damage to the tanker with no injuries reported.

The oil-rich Gulf has borne the brunt of Iran’s attacks in response to US-Israeli strikes that sparked the Middle East war late last month.

Tehran has threatened to target vital infrastructure across the Gulf, including energy sites.

Netanyahu says Iran war goals achieved ‘beyond halfway point’

March 31, 2026

WASHINGTON, United States: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the war on Iran had achieved more than half its aims, without putting a timeline on when it would end.

“It’s definitely beyond the halfway point. But I don’t want to put a schedule on it,” Netanyahu told the conservative US broadcaster Newsmax.

He added that he meant the war was more than halfway “in terms of missions, not necessarily in terms of time.”

President Donald Trump, who launched the war with Netanyahu on February 28, initially said the operation would last for four to six weeks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday that the war would last “weeks” further instead of months, amid wide US public opposition to a conflict that has sent oil prices soaring.

Netanyahu said the war had achieved goals including killing “thousands” of members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

Israel and the United States are also “close to finishing their arms industry,” he added.

“Just the whole industrial base — wiping out all, you know, just plants, entire plants, and the nuclear program itself,” he said.

Netanyahu and Trump have repeatedly alleged that Iran was close to building a nuclear weapon, a claim not supported by the UN nuclear watchdog and that comes despite Trump saying he “obliterated” key sites in attacks last year.

Netanyahu also voiced confidence that Iran’s Islamic republic would fall, though he said again that this was not the goal.

“I think this regime will collapse internally. But at the moment, right now, what we’re doing is just degrading their military capacity, degrading their missile capacity, degrading their nuclear capacity and also weakening them from the inside,” Netanyahu said.

The war came weeks after Iranian authorities clamped down on major anti-government demonstrations, killing thousands of people.

Trump in recent days has said the war has effectively achieved “regime change” by empowering other figures within the cleric-run state who Trump says may be more accommodating.

Turkiye says NATO defenses down missile from Iran

March 31, 2026

ANKARA: A ballistic missile fired from Iran entered Turkish airspace on Monday and was shot down by NATO defenses, Ankara said, in the fourth such incident reported since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

There was no immediate comment from ?Tehran which has ?denied specifically targeting its neighbor Turkiye during ?the ?conflict and ?has said ?it ?was not involved in the previous three missile launches, which were all downed by NATO defenses.

NATO’s spokesperson said the alliance intercepted an Iranian missile heading toward its member country Turkiye, adding that it was “prepared for such threats and will always do what is necessary to defend all Allies.”

Iran has fired missiles at countries across the Middle East since the ?start of the conflict, striking oil infrastructure and bases ?with US forces in the region.

Turkiye’s ?defense ministry did not say where ?it thought the missile was heading ?on Monday.

Turkiye’s Incirlik Air Base in the southern Adana province hosts ?US, Turkish, Polish, Qatari and other personnel.

US personnel are also stationed at NATO’s Kurecik radar station in Turkiye’s southeastern Malatya province where the alliance recently deployed a Patriot missile defense system.

Separately, Turkiye’s Chief of the General Staff, ?General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, held a video conference with NATO Military Committee Chair Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone on Monday, ?to discuss regional ?defense and security issues, the defense ministry said.

The ministry said all necessary measures were being taken “decisively and without hesitation” against any threat directed at Turkiye’s territory and airspace.

The incident comes after talks in Islamabad at the weekend between the top diplomats of Turkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia on potential ways to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.

Turkiye had offered and tried to mediate between Iran and the United States before the war started at the end of last month.

Ankara has repeatedly called for ?an end to the ?conflict, criticized the US-Israeli attacks as illegal, and described Iran’s attacks on regional countries as unacceptable.

Two Chinese container ships transited Strait of Hormuz

March 31, 2026

BEIJING: Two container vessels belonging to the Chinese shipping giant Cosco have successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz as they have exited the Gulf, ship tracking data showed Tuesday.

Shipping through the strait has slowed to a trickle in recent weeks as Iran has all but closed the crucial waterway following US-Israeli attacks on the country.

The CSCL Indian Ocean crossed the strait at around 0914 GMT on Monday, followed by CSCL Arctic Ocean 27 minutes later, according to data from Marine Traffic.

They passed close to the Iranian-controlled island of Larak and are bound for Port Klang in Malaysia.

Cosco refused to comment on the transit when asked by AFP.

Iran has said that the strait is open to ships of “friendly countries.” It maintains healthy diplomatic ties with China.

The two ships, both ultra-large container vessels belonging to state-owned Cosco, had aborted an attempt to transit on Friday, according to Marine Traffic.

Cosco said on Wednesday it was resuming bookings for shipments from Asia to several Gulf countries, though without using routes that transit Hormuz.

The Shanghai-based firm had suspended bookings for services through the strait earlier in March due to the war.

March 30, 2026

BAHA: The Heritage Commission has concluded the second archeological excavation season at Al-Asdaa in Al-Makhwah governorate, Baha region, as part of its scientific programs studying and documenting archeological sites across the Kingdom.

The excavations uncovered an ancient mosque measuring approximately 11 by 12 meters, featuring a mihrab and three entrances, along with square column bases that once supported its roof.

The findings indicate a clear architectural plan, reflecting the mosque’s significance and its pivotal role in early Islamic urban planning, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The excavations also revealed four rooms adjacent to the mosque on its northeastern side, containing features such as water basins, storage facilities, and indoor cooking hearths, suggesting they were used for residential purposes or service activities related to the mosque, the commission noted.

These efforts are part of the Heritage Commission’s work to document heritage sites across the Kingdom, contributing to building a scientific knowledge base on the history of the Arabian Peninsula and highlighting its rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Saudi and Canadian foreign ministers discuss expanded ties and regional security

March 30, 2026

RIYADH: The Saudi foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, on Monday discussed security challenges in the Middle East and highlighted the growing ties between their countries.

During talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh, they welcomed what they described as positive momentum in relations spanning more than 50 years, underpinned by shared interests in economic diversification, security cooperation and global stability, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

They noted that bilateral trade exceeded SR12 billion ($3.2 billion) in 2024, and welcomed the establishment of the Saudi-Canadian Business Council, which aims to boost economic cooperation. They also cited progress in ongoing negotiations over an agreement on the promotion and protection of foreign investment.

The ministers welcomed the second Saudi-Canadian Education Partnership Forum, which also took place on Monday, and discussed the expansion of cooperation in key sectors including trade, investment, space, artificial intelligence, mining, tourism, education and pharmaceuticals. They agreed on the important need to deepen ties and advance a comprehensive partnership between their countries.

On regional matters, they exchanged views on ongoing tensions and condemned what they described as the destabilizing activities of Iran, including attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. They called on authorities in Tehran to cease all such actions, and to respect international law and the principles of good neighborliness.

The ministers also urged Iran to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which was adopted on March 11 and calls for a halt to Iranian attacks on other countries in the region and to support for affiliated militias in Arab countries, warning that such actions undermine regional and international security.

Anand expressed Canada’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia, and thanked the Kingdom for its assistance with efforts to facilitate the return of Canadian citizens leaving the region during the current crisis. She reaffirmed the readiness of Ottawa to work closely with Riyadh to promote regional stability and protect civilians amid the ongoing conflict in the Gulf and wider Middle East.

Both ministers stressed the need for coordinated international efforts to deescalate tensions, strengthen maritime and energy security, and safeguard critical infrastructure.

Saudi project clears 1,737 explosive devices in Yemen

March 30, 2026

RIYADH: Members of Saudi Arabia’s Project Masam removed 1,737 explosive devices from various regions of Yemen last week.

The total included 1,732 unexploded ordnances and five anti-personnel mines, according to a recent report.

The explosives were planted indiscriminately and posed a threat to civilians, including children, women and the elderly.

The demining operations took place in Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale and Saada.

Ousama Al-Gosaibi, Project Masam’s managing director, said the initiative had cleared a total of 551,189 mines since it began in 2018.

Teams are tasked with clearing villages, roads and schools to facilitate the safe movement of civilians and delivery of humanitarian aid.

The project trains local demining engineers, provides them with modern equipment, and offers support to Yemenis injured by the devices.

Iranian ambassador to Russia dismisses Trump’s claims about talks

30 Mar, 2026

Iran does not currently need negotiations but remains a “rational player” that is “not looking for war,” Tehran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has said. Speaking on RT’s Sanchez Effect, Jalali said Iran has “never denied peace talks” but insisted there must be “proper conditions” before any dialogue can begin with the US.

The Iranian diplomat dismissed US President Donald Trump’s claims that Tehran is negotiating with Washington, calling them “completely false.” He noted that Iranian officials have repeatedly denied any talks, adding that, as some Americans have sarcastically written, Trump is “almost sitting in front of a mirror negotiating with himself.”

Jalali argued that Washington is talking up negotiations to undermine Iran’s internal unity and “control energy prices,” while at the same time Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are “planning how to strike Iran.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted on Monday that talks between the US and Iran “are continuing and going well.” Speaking to reporters,Leavitt claimed that what’s being said publicly is “much different than what’s being communicated to us privately.”

Jalali outlined Tehran’s minimum conditions for talks as a “sustainable peace” to start negotiations, clear identification and punishment of the aggressor, and compensation for wartime damage, saying that some losses, such as the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, “cannot be compensated.”

The ambassador also told RT that Israel had informed Russian President Vladimir Putin it did not intend to attack Iran but then “didn’t keep its word,” and accused Washington of striking Iran twice during previous negotiation rounds.

Former Oxford professor convicted of rape by French court

31 Mar, 2026

The prominent Oxford academic and Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan has been sentenced by a Paris criminal court to an 18-year jail term for rape offences committed between 2009 and 2016. Ramadan was convicted of the rape of three women, two years after he was imprisoned for a separate rape offence in Switzerland.

Ramadan was employed by the University of Oxford as Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at St Antony’s College. During his tenure, in October 2017, he was accused by two women of rape, sexual assault, violence, and harassment at the height of the Me Too movement. Ramadan continued to teach until November, when he took an agreed leave of absence from Oxford. At the time, the University said that the leave “allows Professor Ramadan to address the extremely serious allegations made against him”, but “implies no presumption or acceptance of guilt”.

In January 2018, he was detained by French police and taken into custody, where he was formally charged with two counts of rape. Following this, further accusations against him emerged, with more women coming forward with claims that he had made unwanted sexual advances towards them, including allegations of violence and psychological abuse.

As a result, he was formally charged in 2020 with the rape of two more women in France and faced a further charge of rape in Switzerland. Ramadan has consistently denied the charges against him, claiming that they are politically motivated as part of a smear campaign.

Ramadan officially left his position at the University of Oxford in 2021. A spokesperson for the University told Cherwell: “Professor Ramadan left the employment of the University of Oxford in June 2021 by mutual agreement on the basis of early retirement on grounds of ill-health.”

In 2023, Yann Le Mercier was convicted of cyberharassing Ramadan and another individual because of the ongoing court proceedings. At the time, he received the heaviest prison sentence for a cyberbullying case. Ramadan currently has 2.4 million followers on Facebook.

Ramadan was tried by a Swiss appeals court in 2024 over an incident in Geneva in 2008. He was convicted of rape and sexual coercion and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, overturning a previous acquittal. His subsequent appeal against the sentence was rejected.

Ramadan failed to appear in court in Paris this month. His lawyers attributed his absence to his hospitalisation in Switzerland on account of multiple sclerosis, “violating a conditional release order that required him to remain in France”, as Le Monde reports. Prior to the trial, however, a court-ordered medical assessment had confirmed his fitness to plead.

He was convicted in absentia for the rape of three women and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment. Following the verdict, the court issued an arrest warrant and imposed a permanent ban from French territory, coming into effect upon completion of the sentence. The judgment is not final and is expected to be appealed.

This case comes amid broader concerns about the University of Oxford’s handling of sexual misconduct and assault allegations. These concerns have been further intensified by controversy surrounding another professor who was not suspended despite facing allegations of rape.

Putin agrees emergency energy deal with European leader

30 Mar, 2026

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to extend a gas supply contract with Serbia amid the worsening global energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced after his phone call with Putin on Monday.

The US-Israeli war on Iran has sent global gas and oil prices skyrocketing as shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint, have dwindled.

Serbia, which has historically maintained close ties with Russia, has consistently resisted EU pressure to join sanctions or to cut energy ties with Moscow over the Ukraine conflict.

The conversation between Putin and Vucic focused mainly on the “strategic partnership” between the two nations, most notably with respect to energy supplies, the Kremlin confirmed. The Serbian president reportedly expressed gratitude for the continuation of “stable gas deliveries” from Russia.

After the call, Vucic told Serbian media that Putin had agreed to a three-month prolongation of a gas contract that was due to expire March 31. According to the Serbian president, Belgrade secured favorable terms, with prices far lower than in most of Europe.

According to the Kremlin, Putin and Vucic also exchanged views on the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, the Ukraine conflict, and security in Kosovo, as well as neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zia Yusuf, the ‘British Muslim patriot’ Nigel Farage trusts with the border

By SAM BLEWETT

MARCH 31, 2026

The first time I meet Zia Yusuf we’re in a seafront hotel near the White Cliffs of Dover, the backdrop for so many of Britain’s hopes and fears about immigration.

It is early in Ramadan and Yusuf is fasting. He’s here to give his first major speech as Nigel Farage’s pick for home secretary if the insurgent Reform UK enters government — and the big new policy he’s unveiling centers on concerns Islam is displacing Christianity.

Yusuf has been a key player in professionalizing Farage’s right-wing movement, transforming Reform from a populist “start-up” into a more disciplined political machine. As a tech millionaire son of Sri Lankan immigrants, he occupies a powerful — and fairly unique — position: a self-described “proud British Muslim patriot” who uses his own success story to help sell a platform of mass deportations and shielding Christianity.

With Reform fighting to oust Labour and run Britain, Farage has picked Yusuf as the party’s most strident messenger on an issue that roils the country’s politics like few others.

The pugnacious 39-year-old tech millionaire delivers his Dover assault on migration in the gravest of terms to a room of Reform enthusiasts, hitting out at the “invasion” of people who have arrived in the U.K. without permission on small boats.

Yusuf doubles down on his pledge to embark on an unprecedented mass deportation program and rip Britain out of its international human rights treaties. But he also vows to take on the “real and growing threat of Islamist extremism” and announces a new policy of preventing the “incendiary” act of converting churches into mosques.

The policy, unveiled on a dreary day in February, feels a curious one. There’s little to suggest these changes are happening in any large numbers — indeed, the Church of England places covenants on buildings they sell so they cannot be made into sites of other worship. Yet Yusuf insists he gets frequent correspondence about what he says is an issue of real import, adding: “I can send you a list of 41 straight away.” Even if that number checks out, it would represent a minuscule fraction of extant churches in the U.K.

But Yusuf’s focus on religion is part of an increasing trend on the right of British politics, from its extremes to the mainstream. Reform and their establishment rivals in the Conservatives have been speaking more about Britain’s Christian roots, as they stoke concern about a civilizational threat posed by Islam.

Yusuf says if Britain stays on its current trajectory “we’re headed to sectarian violence in this country.”

“We’re headed for not just a bad outcome, but a catastrophic one, where everybody’s now divided amongst racial or religious lines, voting accordingly, the economy is not growing, the most productive people are leaving,” he warns. Labour charge that Yusuf’s plans are “about ripping apart families and communities and attacking our friends and neighbors.”

Party rifts

For all the dark warnings, Yusuf explains that his ambition is to re-inspire the generosity that’s foundational to his family story, in which his parents arrived in Britain from Sri Lanka.

Born Muhammad Ziauddin Yusuf to two National Health Service workers in North Lanarkshire in 1986, his talents won him a 50 percent scholarship to the elite fee-paying Hampton School in south-west London. He graduated from the London School of Economics, before working in banking and then co-founding a luxury concierge start-up that would be sold for around $300 million.

Yusuf speaks warmly about the welcome his family received. But he argues the same welcoming nature that propelled his family to success is now being taken for granted by asylum seekers living on welfare in tax-payer funded accommodation, while the very fabric of Britain is torn apart by high levels of legal migration.

“I don’t know there are many countries in the world where my story would be possible, and so I take that very seriously, and I will not allow the goodwill and generosity of the British people to be taken advantage of,” Yusuf, characteristically dressed in a sharp blue suit with a Union Jack pin on his lapel, tells me in Dover. “So actually, the notion that our policies create division is a nonsense — we’re the ones who are trying to stop the division.”

Indeed, there are some in the party who see his own status as a second-generation immigrant as a benefit when trying to drive what one Reform official describes as an “incredibly radical” approach towards migration. “It helps he’s from an immigrant background so it’s hard to throw stones at him,” says the official, who like others in this piece was granted anonymity to speak about internal party matters.

But stones are thrown — and not always by rival parties. Despite his crucial role in shaping Reform into an election-fighting machine that the polls suggest could propel Farage into Downing Street, it’s not always been smooth. Yusuf resigned as party chairman with a post on X after new Reform MP Sarah Pochin spoke in favor of banning the burqa — a demand he branded “dumb.” Farage blamed Yusuf’s exit on the “tirade of personal racist abuse” he received online. “Look, it obviously is difficult, but I take full responsibility for my decisions,” he says when I ask him about the circumstances around his brief, high-profile fallout with Reform last June.

A self-confessed workaholic who carries out his Reform duties for free, Yusuf now blames his resignation on a “decision borne out of exhaustion” — and says he has come to support banning all face coverings under a law-and-order argument.

‘Would we ban praying in public?’

When we meet again in March, religion is in the air once more — with a debate over Muslim prayer raging on the right of British politics.

Our second meeting is in the Michelin-starred restaurant of the Goring Hotel in central London (Yusuf’s choice). With its chintzy decor and finely-dressed staff, the Goring is a special occasion kind of place, unless you’re the late Queen Mother — or Zia Yusuf. I ask if he’s been here before, and our waitress answers for him: “Many times, I believe.”

Ramadan is over and it’s Eid al-Fitr, a time to celebrate the end of the fast. Just a day before, Pochin made more unscripted remarks that are causing controversy. When her autocue froze during a speech in Scotland she claimed aides had to stop her from appearing on stage in a tartan burqa. Yusuf shrugs it off as “a joke” from someone he now describes as a friend — but there is a more serious debate involving Islam in Britain that he declines to deflect.

Senior Conservative MP Nick Timothy described a large group of Muslim worshippers praying in Trafalgar Square as an “act of domination,” that is “straight from the Islamist playbook.”

Both Christians and Jews came to the defense of the “open Iftar” in which people of all faiths and none were invited to break the fast. But Yusuf’s boss Farage joined Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch in calling for such mass Muslim prayers to be banned.

Yusuf is much more hesitant. He says he understands the controversy, even arguing that the prayer in question met the dictionary definition of “incendiary” because of the row that ensued. He would’ve advised a different site for the open prayer.

If Reform wins, he says, “I would like my legacy to be a way of creating a cohesion amongst a country which does have a lot of Muslims in it, obviously, right, does have a lot of Hindus in it, does have a lot of Sikhs, obviously does have a lot of Christians. And my view on how that’s delivered is through a sense of preference for Christianity, to be honest about that.”

That reminds me to jog his memory for detail on the 41 under-threat churches I’m yet to receive — having pestered the party too. “Oh, I’ll send it to you,” Yusuf responds.

But would he as home secretary ban mass prayer? Yusuf stresses that freedom to practice religion is an essential part of Britishness, and warns of unintended consequences from legislating on the issue.

“Would we ban praying in public? No, we wouldn’t ban that,” he says, then points to complexities around size limits when pressed on whether that means mass gatherings.

Yusuf says Reform is examining if there is a “policy response that is helpful,” but again warns of unintended consequences: “And so even if you did say, right, we’re banning all prayer in public — which is not what we want to do, and I think would be a bad idea, and not a British thing to do — then you’re somewhat getting away from a really important discussion that needs to be had here.”

From start-up to party

Policy matters aside, Yusuf is helping to shift Reform from a “start-up,” in his own words, to a professional party. It won hundreds of councillors in last year’s local elections, took control of 10 local authorities, and will seriously challenge to win the next general election, due in 2029, if it sustains its current popularity in opinion polls. The former Goldman Sachs executive has been an essential counter to Farage’s free-wheeling campaign gusto — even if Yusuf has in the past week had to reckon again with the party’s struggle to root out candidates responsible for, in his words, “abhorrent” conduct.

Much has changed since Yusuf joined the party’s top brass in July 2024 after donating £200,000 to Farage’s election campaign — not least a string of high-profile defectors from the Conservatives including Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman, who Yusuf once described as “the most insidious form of politician.” Both were, after all, in government when post-Brexit Britain experienced record high levels of immigration. Now all involved are at pains to stress unity.

A second Reform official acknowledged Yusuf’s influence has waned as the party has grown. Jenrick was recently gifted the shadow Treasury job he coveted.

“For a while Zia thought he and Nigel could run the country,” they said. “The bigger you become as an organization the less power you hold.” Yusuf in an interview in early 2025 described speaking to Farage “50 times a day.” Now he tells POLITICO their chats happen “pretty much every day.”

The second official said of Yusuf: “Zia has a habit of attacking people who are joining us. He attacked Suella and Jenrick — he called them traitors. He attacks people who might come our way because it dissipates his power.”

The first Reform official said Yusuf remains “crucial to everything Reform do” but stressed his importance “particularly early on.” They heaped praise on Yusuf’s work ethic, which they argued is fueled by a loathing of mainstream politicians. “He genuinely hates the political establishment and probably hates the Tory party more than he hates the Labour party,” the adviser said.

Yusuf routinely calls out “betrayal” by the Conservatives, attacking a legacy of high taxation and high immigration despite promises otherwise. “As somebody who has voted Tory in my adult life, I found that betrayal just spectacular,” he tells me at the Goring, over Acquerello risotto, pan-fried bass and courgette flower that goes half-eaten. The truffle potato puree he orders is cleared away untouched.

Then along came Farage’s return the political scene, a comeback for the man Yusuf describes as the “ultimate political founder.” Yusuf still talks in the idiom of Silicon Valley, reeling off stats at every opportunity. He wants to become an MP at some point, though where he’s not decided. “I’ve got plenty on my plate at the moment,” he said.

Yusuf’s past political leanings are complex too. He has described himself as being “center left” in his university days and “more left” still before that. He speaks with pride about having joined the vast marches against the invasion of Iraq, and of celebrating Barack Obama’s election as U.S. president.

Yusuf plays down his former leftie credentials when we speak at the Goring. “I wouldn’t say left wing,” he says. “I mean, I’ve only ever voted Conservative in my life prior to, obviously, Reform being around.” He attributes his shift rightwards to starting to earn money in the City of London and setting up his Velocity Black business — prompting him to think more about the sanctity of taxpayers’ money.

Some who’ve met Yusuf describe him as having a crushing chip on his shoulder, and they struggle to get a sense of a hinterland. “He’s an enigma,” said one person who worked with him in Reform.

Attempts to pin Yusuf down on even the vaguest of personal matters is tricky. He tells me he’ll be off to see his family later to celebrate Eid. But what else is he up to this weekend? He’ll play some tennis and go to the gym, he says, before snapping back to plans for “crunching a load of numbers” because of pending policy announcements.

That work ethic is challenging for some, particularly subordinates.

The BBC has documented how staff both within Reform and at Velocity Black found his behavior controlling and sometimes domineering. During Yusuf’s short-lived resignation, Arron Banks, a close ally of Farage throughout the Brexit campaign and beyond, said: “The corks will be popping in party HQ this evening.”

“I have high standards,” Yusuf acknowledges.

‘Move fast’

So how will Yusuf handle government, should Reform make it that far? “I wouldn’t say move fast and break things. But it is move fast.”

When Reform won their first local authorities, Yusuf headed up an Elon Musk-inspired “DOGE” unit to slash spending. Nowhere was more important to the project than Reform’s flagship Kent County Council (KCC). But finding budget cuts wasn’t easy.

Bill Barrett, who was kicked out of Reform after a video leak displayed just how divided the Kent cabinet was, described Yusuf’s approach there as “smash and grab chaos.”

He recounts how Yusuf would arrive at the local authority in England’s south east and demand “15 filing cabinets” of documents to take back to London for analysis when he wasn’t happy with how the expenditure cull was going. “To which the officers at KCC said not a chance in hell because that’s GDPR (data protection laws) and you’re not even elected mate, so basically piss off,” Barrett, who has made the rare conversion from Reform to the Tories, says.

“Then he came back a second time and had a proper go at everyone … saying we’re not finding savings, we’re not happy,” Barrett adds. “Basically he’s a very, very pushy individual who’s obviously experienced high-level corporate life.” Voters will in time judge the impact of the claimed millions in savings — but more immediately they’re facing council tax hikes of a high 4 percent.

Yusuf foresees great challenges to his policy platform if Farage does ever take Downing Street. He cites POLITICO’s reporting that some in a civil service that’s meant to impartially enact the government’s program would struggle to “stomach” working under Reform, particularly in the Home Office.

“Nigel’s not in any doubt that if I go into the Home Office as home secretary and there’re staff there who are going to start sabotaging what we’re doing or unwilling to get with the program or unwilling to embark on a mass deportation program they won’t be in the Home Office for very long,” Yusuf warns.

The threats he foresees to the project do not stop there. “My baseline assumption is that every unelected body, if we win the general election and a majority, every unelected body in the country will be hostile to us,” he says — before training his sights on the House of Lords.

“We’re not gonna get into any wars of our own choice but we have to be prepared,” he says of the upper chamber. He argues that peers put in place “by Tony Blair, by Gordon Brown” are and “generally not going to be in favor of most of things. I think most of them would recoil at the idea of detaining and deporting people who are in this country illegally. Should that be the case, then packing the Lords is on the table as an option.”

That means finding and appointing hundreds and hundreds of peers, I say. “Yep. I think we would have every right to do that so long as we have been very honest with the British people about what we’re planning on doing,” he replies. “And if we’ve won a mandate from the electorate, how dare any peer stand in the way and try and stop at us delivering for the British people?”

But wouldn’t that involve appointing 900 or so new Reform peers to get a majority from a baseline of zero, I ask? Yusuf seems up for the fight. “It’d be a lot. We’re working on recruiting those people as we speak.”

Radical pitch

There’s no doubt Yusuf’s policy platform is radical. There’s the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-style removals force to assist in deporting 600,000 people over five years.

Then there’s scrapping Britain’s permanent settled status for migrants, a move that could see people who have legally lived and worked in the U.K. for years deported. There’s paying countries like Afghanistan to take back migrants. And there’s forcibly removing women and children asylum seekers who arrive illegally. “Nobody’s out of scope,” he says, though he concedes there will be an element of prioritization.

Then there would be pulling Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights and other treaties Yusuf believes are a hindrance; making the maritime border “among the most surveilled in the world”; and a vast expansion of police “stop and search” powers.

First Farage cheered on Brexit, a decisive split that has left much of the public dissatisfied and was only followed by a spike in migration. Now Yusuf taking the country out of the ECHR is being offered as an antidote.

The Reform rep’s critics would pitch the plan as an easy sell that belies the true nature of the problem. More than a month after Yusuf first promised POLITICO the church list, it’s yet to materialize.

Fundraiser for tragic Smethwick teenager stabbed outside mosque passes £10,000 target

James Vukmirovic

30 Mar 2026

A fundraiser set up to help honour the memory of a teenager who died after being stabbed outside a Smethwick mosque has passed its original target.

The GoFundMe page was set up by Sameer Khan to raise funds for Zeshan Afzal under the Islamic act of Sadaqah Jariyah, or continuous charity, which refers to any act that continues to benefit humanity even after the death of its initiator.

A target of £10,000 was initially set for the fund, but to date, £10,882 has been raised on the site, with Mr Khan saying that the funds raised from the page would be used as a continuous reward for Zeshan after his death in Smethwick.

The message on the GoFundMe page said: "In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

"This Ramadan, a month of mercy, forgiveness, and immense reward, we were tested in the most heart-breaking way.

"Our beloved brother was tragically taken from us during this sacred month, a time when the gates of Jannah are open and deeds are multiplied.

"He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a light in our lives. His kindness, generosity, and laughter touched everyone who knew him.

"To lose him during Ramadan has been an indescribable pain, but we hold onto the promise of Allah’s mercy and the hope that this blessed month is a sign of honor for him.

"The Prophet taught us that when a person passes, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for them.

"We are raising funds in his name to serve as Sadaqah Jariyah, a source of continuous reward for him in his grave and a means of light for him in the Hereafter.

"Your donation, no matter how small, is an act of charity in this blessed month when rewards are multiplied.

"We ask you to give for the sake of Allah, to make du’a for him, and to help us turn our grief into ongoing good that benefits others.

"May Allah accept your charity, forgive our brother, expand his grave, fill it with light, and reunite us with him in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen."

In the most recent update by West Midlands Police, the force said that a total of seven teenagers has been charged with murder and the investigation was continuing, with the next court date taking place on April 17.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We’ve made further arrests and a charge following the death of Zeshan Afzal in Smethwick.

“Zeshan, 18, died after being stabbed on Oldbury Road on February 20.

“Our investigation is continuing at pace, and our thoughts remain with Zeshan’s family.

“Since Zeshan’s death we have charged a total of seven teenagers with murder.

“This remains an active investigation, and we are still appealing for anyone with information or footage to please get in touch.

“You can contact us on 101 quoting log number 4896 of 20 February. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55511.”

Zelensky says allies asked him to scale back attacks on Russian energy

Vitaly Shevchenko

31 Mar, 2026

Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukraine's allies have urged him to scale back attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure amid the ongoing global fuel crisis - but that they would only end if Russia stopped targeting Ukraine's first.

The Ukrainian president told journalists in a WhatsApp voice message that, by launching attacks on Russia's energy system, Ukraine was only responding in kind.

It is unclear which countries he may have been referring to. China and India remain heavily dependent on Russian oil, and the EU on Russian gas.

Zelensky's comments come after a string of long-range Ukrainian strikes on Russia's energy sector, including the key oil export terminal at the port of Ust-Luga outside St Petersburg.

"We have received messages from some of our partners asking about how our responses against Russia's oil sector - the energy sector - can be reduced," Zelensky said in the voice message.

"If Russia is ready not to strike Ukraine's energy, then we'll respond by not attacking theirs."

In response to surging energy prices triggered by the war in Iran and Tehran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz - a key shipping route - the US recently eased some sanctions it had imposed on Russian oil.

China and India remain the largest buyers of Russian crude oil, though, accounting for 85% of its exports in February, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

Meanwhile, the EU is the largest buyer of Russian gas (34%) and LNG (49%).

After relentless Russian attacks on Ukraine's oil refineries, the latter now heavily relies on fuel imports - largely via Poland, Greece, Lithuania and Turkey.

Almost half of Ukraine's gas imports used to come from Hungary, but they were seemingly suspended Budapest accused Kyiv of stalling the repair of a pipeline carrying oil from Russia over it holding up an EU loan

The key targets of Ukraine's deep strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and the impact they have are a closely guarded secret, meaning there's little clarity there as well.

While strikes on Ukraine's energy have been in the news recently, defence factories have been hit as well.

Zelensky told journalists on Saturday that Ukraine's attacks on the Ust-Luga oil terminal earlier this week had knocked out 60% of the port's capacity.

He was speaking after visiting Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan - all of which have been marauded by Iranian aerial attacks.

During the tour, he offered Ukraine's drone technology and expertise, and sought assistance in protecting Ukraine against Russian missile attacks.

While surging global oil prices mean an injection of cash into Russia's war economy, they also threaten Ukraine's ability to fight.

Responding to a BBC question on Saturday, Zelensky said the Ukrainian army had enough fuel for now, but that he had sought to secure more during his tour of the Gulf.

He also said that Ukraine, which successfully beat back Russia's attempts to stop grain exports via the Black Sea, had useful experience of unblocking trade routes when it came to the Strait of Hormuz.

Russian attacks have caused severe damage to Ukraine's energy system, in particular leaving more than a million people without electricity and heating in winter.

Most Syrian refugees in Germany expected to return home in three years, Merz says

31 Mar, 2026

Bethany Bell

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz says that he and the Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa hope that 80% of the Syrians in Germany will return home in the next three years.

During the civil war in Syria, almost a million Syrians sought refuge in Germany.

Speaking after a meeting with Sharaa in Berlin, Chancellor Merz said that more than a year after the end of the war, the situation in Syria had "now changed fundamentally" and that "the need for protection must therefore be reassessed".

But there was little detail as to how the returns would come about.

Merz's government has taken a tougher line on refugees and migrants as support for the anti-immigration AfD party has surged.

He said initially the priority would be returning "those who no longer have a valid residence rights", especially criminal offenders.

But he said more would follow.

"Looking ahead over the next three years – as Sharaa has expressed his hope – around 80% of Syrians currently residing in Germany are expected to return to their home country," Merz said.

He added that many Syrian refugees had made a major contribution in Germany but that most wanted to return home, where they would play an important role in rebuilding Syria in the years ahead.

Both Merz and Sharaa conceded that some Syrians would stay in Germany.

Merz said it was in his country's interest that Syrian doctors and carers would be able to remain if they wanted to.

Sharaa said Syria would never forget how Germany had opened its doors to refugees during the civil war.

"We are proud that Syrians have learned very quickly to contribute to society," he said. "We are working with our friends in the German government to establish a 'circular' migration model."

This would "enable Syrians to contribute to the reconstruction of their homeland without giving up the stability and lives they have built here, for those who wish to stay", Sharaa said.

But Franziska Brantner from Germany's opposition Green Party said returning to Syria was not an option for many, because of the lack of infrastructure and the unstable security situation there.

She said many Syrians were "deeply anchored" in Germany, holding systemically important jobs and with children in school.

Sharaa's visit has been accompanied by a number of protests.

The Kurdish Community in Germany (KGD) has called on Merz to demand binding commitments regarding the protection of minorities in Syria during the visit. It accuses Sharaa of human rights violations and war crimes.

Sharaa came to power in December 2024 after leading the Islamist rebel offensive that toppled former leader Bashar al-Assad, bringing an end to more than a decade of civil war.

He vowed to reunify Syria, but the country remains deeply divided and has been rocked by several waves of deadly sectarian violence - including recent clashes between government-aligned forces and Kurdish groups in the north-east.

Earlier this year, the government announced the formation of an interim parliamentary body, describing it as a step towards constitutional reform.

However, Kurdish representatives have said the body lacks meaningful representation and accuse Damascus of excluding them from negotiations over Syria's future and failing to provide strong guarantees on minority rights.

This could also be a concern for other groups such as the Druze who are seeking greater autonomy.

Many of the Syrians in Germany came during the refugee crisis of 2015, when former Chancellor Angela Merkel made the decision not to close the borders to those fleeing the civil war.

"Wir schaffen das," she said back then. "We'll manage this." For some of her supporters it was a pragmatic statement of intent.

But it also became a political liability for Merkel. She faced widespread criticism, with many seeing it as an open invitation for mass migration.

Far-right parties, such as the AfD, have since surged all over Europe, campaigning on anti-migrant platforms.

Today, concerns over migration are a major factor in European politics, with many governments imposing much tougher controls.

How the US could try to seize Iran's Kharg Island

31 Mar, 2026

Frank Gardner

US President Donald Trump has indicated that he may send troops to seize control of Iran's key oil export terminal at Kharg Island in the northern Gulf. So what's behind this, how would it work and what are the risks?

Kharg Island has long been Iran's chief outlet for its oil exports. The island sits offshore with waters deep enough to load product onto tankers known as Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), which can hold around two million barrels. Around 90% of Iran's oil exports pass through Kharg.

During the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s it was frequently bombed by the Iraqi Air Force and on 13 March this year the US struck what it said were 90 military targets on the island. It however spared the oil infrastructure.

If the US does decide to invade Kharg Island then it would most likely be a temporary measure intended to put pressure on Iran by cutting off its fuel exports until it relinquished its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz - one of the world's busiest oil shipping lanes - and conceded to Washington's demands.

Given the resilience and defiance of the Iranian regime it is highly questionable whether this would work.

The speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has warned that his country's forces would "rain down fire" on any invading US forces. Iran is believed to have reinforced its defences on the island, including with surface-to-air missile batteries.

This has prompted widespread speculation that either or both could be used to seize and hold Kharg.

In theory, the paratroopers could make an airborne assault, probably at night, to seize key positions on this small island, which measures just 20 sq km (7.7 sq miles).

The US Marines would deploy from ships equipped with Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC) for making amphibious landings. But first those ships would have to run the gauntlet of getting through the Iranian-controlled Strait of Hormuz and then sailing all the way up the Gulf past any number of hidden Iranian drone and missile launch sites.

Any landing, by air or sea, would expect to be met with anti-personnel mines and swarms of drones. Such is the awesome fighting power of these Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) that the US force would almost certainly prevail, but it could come at the expense of a severe number of casualties.

The US then has the problem of holding the ground, for an indeterminate period, while subject to bombardment from the Iranian mainland.

A comparable scenario would be Ukraine's Snake Island in the Black Sea, which Russia seized early on after its full-scale invasion in February 2022, only to be driven off it by constant harassing fire from the Ukrainian mainland.

Any lengthy US occupation of Iranian territory would also be unpopular back home in the US, including with some of President Trump's supporters who elected him partly on a promise to never again get embroiled in these sorts of conflicts.

Finally, it is worth noting that there has been so much noise made about a possible US ground assault on Kharg that it could be part of some deception plan.

There is no doubting its strategic value to Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

But there are other islands in the Gulf that could also be in America's sights. These include Larak Island, just offshore from the key port of Bandar Abbas, and sitting right on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is currently making all tanker traffic pass by this island for checking and reportedly forcing vessels to pay $2m (£1.5m) to cross.

Then there is Qeshm, the largest island in the Gulf and 75 times bigger than Kharg, where Iran is suspected of housing underground missile and drone sites.

And there are three islands, Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, whose ownership is disputed between Iran and the UAE but all are occupied by Iran.

Taken together with other Iranian islands, these Gulf islands form a protective shield for Iran that can threaten shipping and give it a geographical advantage that goes a long way to offset America's superior military power.

Then, there is the possibility that none of the above happens.

At the same time as sending more troops to the region and signalling the possibility of a ground operation, Trump said again on Monday that the US is in "serious discussions" with Iran, which could "end our military operations".

As we move into the fifth week of the war, Trump's public statements give little clue as to what his next big move will be.

But a "deal", which many suspect President Trump is more desperate for than the Iranians, will require bridging the currently enormous gap between the US and Iranian positions.

Michigan synagogue attack was Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism, FBI says

31 Mar, 2026

Sareen Habeshian

The attack on a Michigan synagogue earlier this month was a "Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism", federal officials have said.

The FBI on Monday said the accused assailant, Ayman Muhammad Ghazali, "purposely [targeted] the Jewish community and the largest Jewish temple in Michigan" and was "inspired by Hezbollah's militant ideology".

Ghazali, a naturalised US citizen from Lebanon, rammed his truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield on 12 March. Dozens of children were inside the synagogue at the time.

His recovered online activity showed repeated searches for pro-Hezbollah news channels and for queries on large gatherings of Israelis in Michigan, the FBI said in a news conference.

Ghazali died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during the attack, authorities said. No others were killed but a security guard was injured and multiple officers were treated for smoke inhalation.

His online history over the past months included searches for videos about shootouts and bullets and for "news coverage of an Iranian fatwa for total jihad against the US military", FBI Special Agent Jennifer Runyan said on Monday.

Authorities noted that he also consumed live coverage about Naim Qassem, the secretary-general for Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia and a political party designated by the US as a foreign terrorist organisation.

In the days before the attack, Ghazali purchased an AR-style rifle along with 10 rifle magazines and about 300 rounds of ammunition, Runyan said. He also bought fireworks, torch lighters and gallons of gasoline.

The day before the incident, he started adding photos to a Facebook album he entitled "vengeance", including with images of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the first wave of strikes by the US and Israel in the war with Iran.

On 12 March, while parked at the temple, Ghazali sent his sister overseas videos, photos and messages that "reiterated his intent to commit a mass terrorist attack", Runyan said.

In a video sent just before the attack, Ghazali said in Arabic that he had booby-trapped his car. He then said: "I will forcefully enter and start shooting at them. God willing, I will kill as many of them as I possibly can," according to the FBI.

He also exchanged five short phone calls with his ex-wife, who called police and asked then to do a welfare check on him.

Ghazali then drove his vehicle into the temple doors twice, the first time unsuccessfully, officials said. He exchanged gunfire with security guards before appearing to set off fireworks from inside his truck, according to the FBI. The vehicle caught fire and the hallway filled with smoke.

Authorities have not found any evidence that Ghazali had co-conspirators.

Ghazali was not the subject of or referenced in any prior FBI investigation, nor was he on its terrorist watch list, authorities said.

If Ghazali had lived, he would have been charged with providing material support to Hezbollah, said ?Jerome Gorgon, US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.

In days after the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Ghazali's brother was a Hezbollah commander who was recently killed in an airstrike. The BBC has not independently confirmed the brother's identity.

NATO member closes airspace to US warplanes involved in Iran war

30 Mar, 2026

Spain has closed its airspace to aircraft linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran, deepening a rift with Washington over the month-long conflict sweeping the Middle East.

On Monday, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said that aircraft taking part in operations against Iran will not be allowed to operate in the country’s airspace, including US jets based in other NATO countries such as the UK or France.

Madrid had already barred the use of the jointly operated Rota and Moron de la Frontera bases in southern Spain for strike missions.

Robles told reporters that Spain would not “participate in or contribute to a war that was initiated unilaterally and against international law,” echoing Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who branded the US-Israeli campaign an “illegal, reckless and unjust war.”

Around 15 US KC-135 tanker aircraft have been relocated to bases in France and Germany, Spanish media reported. With Spain’s airspace off-limits, long-range B-52 and B-1 bombers operating from the UK’s Fairford airbase must now fly longer routes, reducing operational efficiency and forcing trade-offs between fuel and payload.

Madrid’s decision, first reported by El Pais, is the most significant public break with Washington by a major Western ally since the 2003 Iraq invasion, when Spain allowed US use of its territory despite domestic opposition, the newspaper wrote.

Spain has been among the most outspoken EU countries in opposing the Iran war, withdrawing its ambassador from Israel and downgrading diplomatic relations. Sanchez has repeatedly urged an end to hostilities, warning last week that it could have “much worse” consequences than the campaign in Iraq.

Spain’s defiance has drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump, who has threatened trade measures and recalled Madrid’s failure to meet NATO’s 5% defense spending target.

While closing its airspace and bases for missions against Iran, Spain says it remains committed to its broader NATO obligations and continues cooperation within the military alliance and the EU on other security issues. US military aircraft can still use Spain’s facilities under existing bilateral agreements for logistics and support for some 80,000 American troops based in Europe.

CAIR-Texas OP-ED: Revised Texas social studies curriculum shields students from complexity

March 30, 2026

Representing CAIR-Texas, I have focused my testimonies on the contributions of the Islamic civilization and the influence of Muslims on Texas, the United States and the world. We cannot simply erase Muslims from history because we don’t like them…

Despite presenting respectful and factual testimonies, I have faced a threat of violence that required a Department of Public Safety officer to escort me to my car after my testimony.

I have been threatened with deportation.

I have been falsely accused of pushing Shariah on students, called a terrorist and had my testimony mischaracterized by board representatives whose constituents elected them to ensure Texas students are taught accurate and honest facts…

I am more concerned about the students who will hear only one story in their homes, communities and schools. How will they be prepared for the complex world they will inherit?

If you share the same concerns, join me and others in the upcoming SBOE hearings. Let’s ensure everyone has a seat at the table.

CAIR, CAIR-Michigan Call on Sen. Slotkin to Apologize for Appearance on Bill Maher Show, Denounce His Anti-Muslim Hate and Anti-Arab Racism

March 30, 2026

The Michigan chapter and national headquarters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) to apologize for her “deeply hypocritical” appearance on Bill Maher’s show and denounce his long history of anti-Muslim bigotry and anti-Arab racism.

Slotkin appeared as the primary guest on Maher’s show last week, just days after she denounced a Muslim politician for associating with a podcaster, Hasan Piker, who she accused of antisemitism, which he has denied.

In a statement, CAIR and CAIR-Michigan said:

“We call on Senator Slotkin to apologize for appearing on Bill Maher’s show and to denounce his long history of anti-Muslim hate and anti-Arab racism. It was deeply hypocritical for Senator Slotkin to embrace Bill Maher just days after she denounced a Muslim politician for associating with a podcaster accused of bigotry.

“The double standards that American Muslims face, even from a senator who represents one of our nation’s largest Muslim populations, are truly remarkable. If consistency means anything to Senator Slotkin–and if she believes hate against any of her constituents is unacceptable–she must denounce Bill Maher’s bigotry and apologize for embracing him.”

Bill Maher has a long history of making racist remarks about Arabs, expressing hatred against Islam, and justifying the Israeli government’s crimes against Muslim and Arab populations. Maher has claimed that ISIS accurately represents most Muslims and that Arabs are dangerous to women. Maher’s specific statements include:

“Talk to women who’ve ever dated an Arab man. The results are not good.”

“It speaks volumes about why liberal western culture is not just different. It’s better. President Obama keeps insisting that Isis is not Islamic. Well, maybe they don’t practice the Muslim faith in the same way he does.

“The most popular name in the United Kingdom, Great Britain – this was in the news this week – was Mohammed. Am I a racist to feel that I’m alarmed by that? Because I am. And it’s not because of the race, it’s because of the religion. I don’t have to apologize, do I, for not wanting the Western world to be taken over by Islam in 300 years?”

“If vast numbers of Muslims across the world believe – and they do – that humans deserve to die for merely holding a different idea or drawing a cartoon or writing a book or eloping with the wrong person, not only does the Muslim world have something in common with Isis. It has too much in common with Isis.”

“China’s like the new Islam. We can’t be honest about them because they’re not white,” he said. “And China, okay, I’m sorry, kids, they do some bad things, China. And we should just recognize that.”

“I’m a proud liberal. I’ve been trying to convince liberals, some of them, that they need to go back to school on this issue of Islam and what it means to be a liberal.”

“They start with this premise in their head that all religions are alike, all cultures are alike. It’s a religion of peace, everything is pretty much equal. Don’t judge. But they don’t really have knowledge of it.”

“These are people — we are liberals, and we are liberals on almost every issue, but not the Muslim issue.”

“You wrote an essay, I think it was an op-ed in the New York Times soon after 9/11, you said and I think it was entitled “Yes, This Is About Islam” because that’s the mantra, is that it’s not about one religion. And I think that what us 9/11 liberals say is, yes it is about this one religion because it is different. There is no other religion that is asking for the death of people…

Last week, CAIR’s national office said that the Kennedy Center’s planned award of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to Bill Maher “highlights the glaring double standards surrounding bigotry and violence that exist in our society.”

According to CAIR’s most recent civil rights report, complaints of anti-Muslim bias and discrimination have continued to rise nationwide, reflecting an ongoing pattern of Islamophobia impacting communities across the country.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar

Trump weighing raid on Iran to ‘extract’ enriched uranium – WSJ

30 Mar, 2026

US President Donald Trump is considering a military operation to seize the enriched uranium held at Iranian nuclear sites, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing sources.

No decision has been made, but Trump remains “generally open” to the option while weighing the risks to US troops, the report said on Sunday. At least 13 US service members have been killed and about 200 wounded since the Iran conflict began in late February.

Before US and Israeli strikes in June 2025, Iran was believed to hold more than 400 kg of uranium enriched to 60% and nearly 200 kg at 20%, which can be further enriched to weapons-grade levels. Most of the material is located at underground facilities in Isfahan and Natanz, according to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi.

Trump has also instructed advisers to increase pressure on Tehran to hand over about 450 kg of enriched uranium as a condition for ending the conflict and has discussed “seizing it by force” if negotiations fail, according to the report. He and some allies have said privately the material could be captured in a targeted operation without prolonging the war, potentially allowing it to wind down by mid-April.

Military experts, however, say any such operation would be complex and high-risk, likely taking weeks and involving coordinated actions across many dispersed sites. US forces would need to secure the facilities under potential missile and drone fire before specialist teams extract the uranium, stored in dozens of cylinders that would require transport in protected casks.

On Sunday, Trump warned of escalation, saying Iran must comply with US demands or “they’re not going to have a country,” adding: “They’re going to give us the nuclear dust.”

The report follows Iran’s rejection last week of a proposed US roadmap that called for dismantling its nuclear program, curbing missile activity and ending support for regional allies, with Tehran saying any deal must include “concrete guarantees” and not be dictated by Washington.

The US has long accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, an allegation Tehran denies, saying its program is purely peaceful, with the claim serving as a central pretext for the conflict.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday, Trump said he would like to take control of Iran’s oil.

“To be honest with you, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran,” Trump said, dismissing critics in the US as “stupid people.”

He added that he was not ruling out the possibility of US forces seizing the key export hub of Kharg Island.

Palm Sunday Killing: U.S. lawmaker warns Tinubu govt of ‘significant consequences’ from Trump administration

MARCH 30, 2026

U.S. congressman Riley Moore has reacted to the deadly attack that left many dead in Anguwan Rukuba in Plateau, on Sunday, warning that sustained killing of Christians will have “significant consequences” on “Nigeria’s relationship with the United States”.

Mr Moore, who was part of a U.S. fact-finding delegation on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, made this call in a post on X on Sunday.

“This Palm Sunday, reports from Nigeria indicate that at least  10 Christians were martyred in the city of Jos. Radical Islamic terrorists opened fire on the Christians before hacking them to pieces with machetes.

“This is sickening and unacceptable, but it’s not surprising. This tragedy follows a pattern of radical Islamic terrorists massacring Christians on Holy Days.

“In fact, terrorists have attacked Christians in Nigeria on every single holy day in recent memory, except for last Christmas—when President Trump sent 12 Tomahawk cruise missiles to stop them,” Mr Moore said.

He added, “Abuja knows this pattern, and they must massively ramp up security for the Triduum and Easter.

“If they don’t take this threat seriously and mobilise to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ, the blood of these martyrs will be on their hands, and there will be significant consequences for Nigeria’s relationship with the United States.”

Christians Should Leave Jos – Zubby Michael Speaks Amid Attacks

March 31, 2026

Nollywood actor Zubby Michaels has reacted to the recent attack on Angwan Rukuba, a community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State that claimed several lives.

Naija News reports that the actor in a post on his Instagram story, advised Christians living in the area to consider leaving for their own safety.

He warned that staying back could expose them to more danger if such attacks happen again.

He wrote: “Christians should leave Jos,”

Reacting, media personality Daddy Freeze questioned the advice given by the actor.

He pointed out that the affected residents are in their own land and should not have to run away.

He added that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that citizens are safe wherever they live.

”Why? It’s their homeland? Why should they run? It’s the government’s duty to protect them,” he stated.

Meanwhile, hundreds of angry residents in Plateau State on Monday morning defied the state-imposed curfew and flooded the streets to protest the deadly Palm Sunday attack that claimed several lives in Jos North Local Government Area.

The protest took place at Anguwan Rukuba, the community where the attack occurred on Sunday evening.

Videos from the protest circulating on social media showed residents chanting and demanding urgent government action over the recurring killings in the area.

Some of the demonstrators expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s failure to prevent repeated attacks in the state.

One of the residents participating in the protest said the curfew imposed by the government was not a solution to the persistent security challenges.

Malian army denies releasing jihadists to end fuel convoy attacks

MARCH 31, 2026

The Malian army denied on Monday that it had released around 200 suspected jihadists in mid-March to secure an end to attacks on fuel convoys that are crippling the landlocked nation's economy.

While security and political sources had initially reported the release of more than 100 jihadists, a Malian security source and local elected representative later said around 200 had been freed. The deal included a truce that is supposed to remain in force until the major Muslim festival of Tabaski, which takes place at the end of May.

"These remarks, reported by certain media outlets, are intended to tarnish Mali's image and undermine trust between the people and their institutions, and particularly between the Malian people and their defence and security forces", Souleymane Dembele, director of information and public relations for the armed forces, told a press briefing.

"This is pure manipulation, completely unfounded and lacking any reliable source", he said.

Since September, jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, an Al-Qaeda affiliate known by its Arab acronym JNIM, have been attacking tanker convoys, bringing the capital Bamako to a standstill at the height of the crisis in October.

Despite several months of calm, Bamako residents faced a diesel shortage at the beginning of March, with fuel being prioritised for use in the energy sector.

The deal involving the supposed jihadists was reached in mid-March and came as the situation improved significantly in Mali's capital following the arrival of fuel convoys. Two of the suspected jihadists died after being freed, a community association representative and elected official told AFP at the time.

On Sunday another of the suspected jihadists died, according to his family. Since 2012, Mali has faced a profound security crisis fuelled in particular by violence from groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as local criminal gangs and pro-independence groups.

Kenya voter registration drive targets young people ahead of 2027 general election

MARCH 31, 2026

Kenya on Monday kicked off a drive to register new voters ahead of next year's general election, with youths using TikTok reels and music to shake off apathy among their peers.

In June 2024, a wave of protests led by the so-called "Gen Z" swept the country after President William Ruto announced tax hikes, denting his popularity among young people.

They escalated into wider unrest over corruption and rights abuses and left more than 100 people dead and dozens others missing, according to rights groups.

While the protests have faded, many youths remain disillusioned with the Ruto administration, which came to power promising to uplift the young and the poor.

"People are suffering, people are dying. Money is just getting lost out of thin air," said 21-year-old Mark Kipchumba, citing economic hardship and rampant corruption as the catalyst for registering as a first-time voter.

The 30-day mass voter registration drive launched by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) aims to enlist at least 2.5 million new voters in its first phase.

The commission says it hopes to add 6.3 million new voters before next year's election, 70 percent of them youths.

"I am here because of the hope that this card brings for the future," Peter Mawangi,22, a film student at Multimedia University of Kenya told AFP.

Despite the current low numbers, a youth-led campaign, called #NikoKadi (I have the voter's card), is steadily turning voter registration into a fad by urging new voters to enlist.

TikTok reels, discounts and music

From TikTok reels to businesses offering discounts to those registered and a planned music concert in May requiring a voter's card for entry, young people are deploying creative tactics to drive up registration.

Activist Ademba Allans, the brains behind the #NikoKadi drive, says the mobilisation is gaining momentum, but added, "apathy is one of the main things that we are trying to fight."

Kenya's 2022 election saw its lowest turnout in 15 years, with youth -- who make up a large share of the population -- accounting for just 39.8 percent of registered voters, a 5.2-point drop from 2017, according to the Kofi Annan Foundation.

Allans hopes to change this and the east African nation’s politics, long dominated by politicians widely seen as out of touch with the realities of young Kenyans.

"We want to shift the system. We want to take everybody that is in the government home," the 26-year old said.

Velma Omondi, a 22-year-old, said she threatened "to cut off" two friends if they did not register, which they did.

"I gave them an ultimatum," she said.

"We cannot call for change if we are not willing to take part in the change," she added.

Drone warfare intensifies in Sudan’s Kordofan

MARCH 31, 2026

Three years into Sudan’s war, Kordofan has become the most intense battleground between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with civilians increasingly caught in a deadly drone war.

In South Kordofan’s Dilling, trader Hamed Hamidan says drones are a constant presence. “They never leave the city,” he said, describing the fear they bring. Across the region, near-daily strikes are hitting markets, homes and hospitals, often killing dozens at a time.

The United Nations says more than 500 civilians were killed by drone strikes between January and mid-March alone, highlighting the growing use of advanced yet relatively cheap weapons in populated areas.

Residents in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, say they can now distinguish between drone types. Smaller “suicide drones” explode on impact, while larger “strategic drones” can travel long distances, carry heavier payloads and return to base.

Both sides are believed to be using foreign-supplied technology. According to Amnesty International, the RSF has access to Chinese-made drones, while the Sudanese army deploys Turkish and Iranian models.

The impact on daily life has been devastating. Aid groups say strikes disrupt food supplies, drive traders away and push prices higher in areas already facing famine risks.

As fighting drags on without a decisive outcome, drone attacks have spread to previously safer areas. In many towns, civilians have adapted to survival routines, fleeing at the first sign of drones overhead, as fear becomes a constant part of life.

Mutfwang Visits ‘Angwan Rukuba’ Hours After Deadly Attack

March 30, 2026

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has appealed to residents of Angwan-Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area to remain calm following the deadly attack that rocked the community on Sunday night.

Naija News reports that Mutfwang made the appeal on Monday (today) when he visited the scene of the incident in Jos, assuring residents that the situation was under control and being closely monitored by security agencies.

The governor sympathised with the affected families, describing the incident as a tragedy that had affected the entire state.

“This is a painful thing for all of us, Angwan-Rukuba is a community that harbors every ethnic nationality in Plateau. I personally have relations that have lived in Angwan-Rukuba, therefore this is a pain to all of us. It is not just to a few people,” he said.

He urged residents, particularly youths, to resist the urge to retaliate.

“I want to plead with you; please let us not take the laws into our hands, I beg you,” he added.

Mutfwang assured families of the deceased that the state government would ensure proper burial arrangements for their loved ones.

“By the grace of God, all these people will be given a decent burial. We will not allow any mass burial. We will make sure that we liaise with the families and give them a decent burial. They didn’t deserve to die like this,” he stated.

The governor also pledged that the government would take full responsibility for the treatment of those injured in the attack.

“As for those that are in hospitals, I want you to know that the government will take full responsibility for their medical bills. I am pleading with you, continue to trust us,” he said.

Reassuring residents further, Mutfwang said the matter had drawn national attention and would be pursued to ensure justice for the victims.

“Even the president is aware of this matter, we will follow it through and make sure that we get justice for the victims by the grace of God,” he added.

The governor again appealed to community leaders and youths to remain peaceful despite the grief and anger caused by the attack.

“Please, I plead with you, leaders, please, I beg you, young people, let us not take the laws into our hands. In the heat of your anger, please calm down. God will help us to address the issues around it,” he said.

Authorities say security agencies have been deployed to the area to restore normalcy and prevent further breakdown of law and order, as residents continue to mourn the victims of the tragic incident.

BNM focuses on value-based intermediation to advance Islamic finance this year

31 Mar 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is focusing on strengthening value-based intermediation (VBI) capabilities including in sustainability and climate agenda in Islamic financial system this year.

The central bank also highlighted efforts to foster an enabling environment for impactful innovation, and catalyse economic potential through the halal economy and global opportunities.

“Guided by strategic stewardship and collaboration, BNM remains committed to advancing Malaysia’s Islamic financial ecosystem, to ensure its progressive evolution delivers lasting benefits for all,” it said in its Annual Report 2025 released today.

The central bank said its work centred on three key strategic thrusts in 2025, which are advancing value-based innovation, strengthening the Islamic finance ecosystem, and retaining Malaysia’s position as a global leader in the field.

Under Thrust 1, it said Islamic finance is built on the objectives (maqasid) of Shariah and these objectives build on values such as fairness, equitable wealth distribution and shared responsibility. Hence, VBI puts these values into practice.

“For Islamic financial institutions (IFIs), this means to operate and create positive and lasting impacts instead of just focusing on profit.

“In 2024, IFIs intermediated RM148.6 billion into VBI-aligned activities including for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and green financing, as well as social finance activities. This shows how VBI places people and the real economy at the centre of financial intermediation,” it said.

In building a stronger impact, BNM introduced initiatives to nurture meaningful innovations to support national priorities.

Among the key innovations are greening halal businesses which empower halal SMEs to adopt sustainable practices (RM15 billion grant); risk sharing fund i-CITA to boost use of risk-sharing instruments by Islamic banks (RM100 million funding); and iTEKAD Protection to enhance financial resilience for microentrepreneurs (RM5 million grant).

Under Thrust 2, BNM adopts a whole-of-ecosystem approach to support progressive and inclusive growth, which includes providing a conducive regulatory environment, deepening the Islamic financial market, and ensuring Shariah certainty in Islamic financial practices.

It also continued efforts to futureproof the Shariah ecosystem and this is done through research, talent development and public understanding of Islamic finance.

In addition, under Thrust 3, BNM continues its efforts to position Malaysia as a global thought leader in Islamic finance.

“Our priorities for 2025 include strengthening business linkages, promoting mutual Shariah recognition, accelerating innovation and building global capabilities. Through these efforts, Malaysia aims to build a more connected and progressive global Islamic finance ecosystem,” it added.

The central bank said throughout 2025, Islamic finance deepened its role in serving Malaysians with Islamic financing rising to 48 per cent of total financing, while takaful participation reached 24.5 per cent.

“This growth reflects how Islamic finance continues to meet the changing financing and protection needs of households and SMEs,” it said. — Bernama

Malaysia to leverage genomics for more resilient healthcare system

31 Mar 2026

Malaysia aims to use genomics for a proactive, inclusive healthcare system, focusing on equity and accessibility through initiatives like MyGENOM.

SHAH ALAM: Malaysia aims to leverage genomics to build a more proactive, inclusive and resilient healthcare system.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said genomics now shapes modern medicine, including infectious disease detection and precision cancer treatment.

“As tools such as Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) continue to advance, our goal is to ensure these innovations remain equitable, affordable and accessible to all Malaysians,” she said.

She delivered this keynote address at the Next Generation Genomics Congress: Asia 2026, held at the National Institutes of Health.

Hanifah Hajar added that medical innovation requires a strong healthcare ecosystem including proper nutrition and stress management. Genomics complements these fundamental factors to deliver more holistic health outcomes.

She stated that Malaysia is strengthening efforts through the MyGENOM initiative, a national population genomics project. This initiative builds a local genomic database and enables earlier prediction of disease risks.

It also improves treatment effectiveness, including in the field of pharmacogenomics.

The two-day congress provides a platform to enhance collaboration in genomics. It includes discussions on artificial intelligence, big data analytics and technologies like liquid biopsy.

Hanifah Hajar urged participants to harness the data revolution and bridge the gap between research and clinical practice. She emphasised ensuring the benefits of genomics are accessible to all segments of society.

Malaysia calls for strong governance in AI and synthetic media era

31 Mar 2026

Deputy secretary-general Nik Kamaruzaman says AI growth demands ethical frameworks and collaboration to ensure information credibility in broadcasting.

KUALA LUMPUR: The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and synthetic media demands robust governance to uphold ethical standards and information credibility.

Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin said these technologies are reshaping content production, distribution and consumption.

“In this evolving landscape, the development of synthetic media is creating new possibilities for creativity, accuracy and audience engagement,” he said.

He delivered the remarks in his opening address at the 22nd Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2026.

Nik Kamaruzaman cautioned that these innovations raise pressing concerns over ethics and the authenticity of information.

He stressed the need for strong collaboration between government, broadcasters, regulators and technology companies.

This partnership is crucial to ensure innovation is accompanied by responsible governance, he added.

“The Ministry of Communications remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance broadcasting capabilities and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the media industry,” he assured.

He highlighted the role of institutions like Radio Television Malaysia and IPPTAR in driving a progressive broadcasting ecosystem.

Convergence between broadcasting and broadband now enables seamless content delivery across multiple platforms.

In this environment, high-quality and transparent content has become critical for informing the public and strengthening societal connections.

The symposium, running until April 2, will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Asia-Pacific broadcasting.

It fosters knowledge-sharing and industry networking among over 1,000 local and international participants.

One Martyred, 16 Wounded in Pakistani Military Regime’s Strikes in Kunar

March 31, 2026

KABUL: At least one civilian has been martyred and 16 others injured in the Pakistani military regime’s strikes in Kunar province, Hamdullah Fitrat, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, said in a statement the other day.

The regime’s forces targeted residential areas near Asadabad, the provincial capital of Kunar, martyring and wounding 17 people mostly women and children, Fitrat said, adding that the attack, which occurred around 5:00 PM on March 29, involved mortars and other heavy weapons.

Authorities have condemned the incident, raising concerns over the continued impact of strikes on civilian populations.

Meanwhile, the International Human Rights Foundation has accused the Pakistani Military Regime’s forces of causing civilian casualties in recent attacks on the eastern provinces of Afghanistan, describing the actions as a “clear war crime.”

In a statement, the organization said that artillery shelling by the regime’s forces struck residential areas and public facilities in the provinces of Paktika, Khost, and Kunar.

The foundation called on Pakistani military forces to immediately halt attacks on civilian areas and urged them to respect international humanitarian law and protect non-combatants.

All attackers of July activists to face action

31 MARCH 2026

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said those involved in armed attacks against activists of the July uprising would be treated as criminals, irrespective of their uniform, and assured proper investigation of all cases and protection for July fighters.

He made the remarks while answering two separate supplementary questions in yesterday’s parliamentary sitting.

To a question from BNP MP Zainul Abedin Farroque, Salahuddin said, “Those who carried out armed attacks against July fighters and ordinary people -- whether they wore the uniform of any force, or were [from] Jubo League, Chhatra League -- whoever they were, they are all criminals. Cases have been filed against them.

“If not, you may file them, and all cases will be properly investigated. The judiciary is responsible for delivering judgement.”

National Citizen Party MP Akhtar Hossen asked whether the home ministry would take departmental action, beyond judicial investigations, against police officers involved in killings and torture over the past 16 years, particularly during the uprising, adding that the Awami League was using the frame of “police killings” to “create disorder”.

In response, the home minister said July fighters are legally and constitutionally protected under the July National Charter, and added that an ordinance issued during the interim government to safeguard them has been placed before parliament and is expected to be passed as a bill with consensus.

“The Awami fascist groups are demanding justice for killings on social media. As I said before -- if that is the case, then freedom fighters too would have to be tried for killing Razakars, if someone now files a case.”

He noted that specific cases have been filed over police killings. “Some are being tried at the International Crimes Tribunal, while others are under the Penal Code in regular courts. Investigations are ongoing, and some charge sheets have already been submitted,” he said, adding that courts will conduct trials independently, without government interference.

Responding to another supplementary question from BNP MP Abul Kalam Azad Siddiqui, Salahuddin said some politically motivated and false cases were withdrawn during the interim government. “After BNP came to power, one of its first tasks was to withdraw false cases. Cases against political activists, journalists, and people from various professions were reviewed and withdrawn upon application.”

Noting that district-level committees were formed under the leadership of district magistrates, he said, “Politically motivated cases filed between 2009 and 2024 can be submitted for withdrawal through these committees, which review and forward them to the ministry.

“Based on recommendations from a committee led by the law minister, cases are then withdrawn under Section 494 of the Criminal Procedure Code.”

‘ROAD BLOCKADES WON’T BE ALLOWED’

The home minister, responding to another question, said, “The tendency to block highways and roads to press demands, which was seen during the interim government and in some cases inspired by its weakness, will never be allowed by us.”

He said that as part of the democratic process, demands will exist, and petitions can certainly be submitted to the relevant authorities, ministries, or departments in that regard.

“To build public opinion, seminars and symposiums can be organised, and if necessary, those demands can be expressed through public gatherings.

“The right to association, the right to speak -- we will ensure these. That can be done. It is democratic culture,” he said, adding that all must move away from the tendency of pressing demands through mobs.

Responding to a question by Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen Farhana, Salahuddin reiterated, “There will be no kind of mob culture in Bangladesh.”

Asking what steps the government would take to stop mob culture, Rumeen said that for 15 long years of Awami League rule, there was a culture of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture in custody.

“Then during the interim government, we witnessed mob culture. From September 2024 to January 2026, statistics show that more than 250-300 people were killed after falling prey to mobs.”

To this, Salahuddin said, “I do not have that exact statistic. What we have is an estimate…. Since taking on this responsibility, incidents resembling mob violence -- though not exactly mobs -- have occurred during this period. Because here we must distinguish definitions.

“The definition of mob is different. When it is a specific crime, the definition of crime is different.”

ILO lauds changes in Bangladesh labour laws

31 Mar 2026

The European Union, United States, and Canada commended Bangladesh’s progress in labour law amendments, inspector recruitment, and other areas, while urging further steps to fully implement the reform roadmap, said a statement from the Bangladesh Mission to the UN in Geneva at the 356th ILO Governing Body session yesterday.

In June 2019, during the Awami League government, five worker representatives from the International Trade Union Confederation filed a complaint under Article 26 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention, alleging Bangladesh’s failure to comply with Conventions 81, 87, and 98.

In response, the then government in 2021 formulated a five-year roadmap on labour sector reforms and submitted it to the ILO Governing Body. Over the past five years, progress under this roadmap has been discussed in eight ILO Governing Body sessions.

Yesterday, the current government presented its ninth progress report.

Of the ILO’s 56-member Governing Body, 19 countries, along with 28 countries from two regional groups and representatives of employers, praised the new government’s strong commitment to legal and administrative reforms in the labour sector.

They also called for a swift resolution of the 2019 case.

Among the supporting entities, 14 countries, the 22-member Arab Group, the six-member Gulf Group, and the employers’ representatives strongly demanded the withdrawal of the case.

It was unanimously decided that the next discussion on the case will be held in March next year.

Forty-seven countries at the 356th ILO Governing Body session also congratulated Bangladesh and expressed full support for its democratically elected government.

Minister for Labour and Employment and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury, MP; and the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Labour, Employment, and Education Mahdi Amin represented Bangladesh in the discussion.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Nahida Sobhan, and Labour Secretary Abdur Rahman Tarafdar were also present.

Amin highlighted the importance of the ILO and noted the prime minister’s personal commitment to ensuring labour rights, worker protection, and social justice.

“At the core of this mandate is the election manifesto, which places special emphasis on civil rights -- including human rights, the rule of law, and freedom of expression -- as well as on creating extensive and diversified employment opportunities, ensuring quality education, and enhancing skills and competencies.”

He reiterated the government’s strong commitment to transparency and accountability, adding that these priorities are aligned with the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda.

He also informed the session that a parliamentary special committee has provided recommendations to transform the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 into law.

The government will make strong efforts to expedite the process, he assured.

He further noted that the government holds a positive stance on the amendments formulated through tripartite consultations and expressed optimism that these measures would enable inclusive, sustainable, and employment-driven development.

UN Says Rights and Living Conditions in Afghanistan Are Worsening

By Fidel Rahmati

March 31, 2026

A new United Nations report says living conditions in Afghanistan are deteriorating sharply, with women and girls bearing the brunt of deepening repression and poverty.

The United Nations has said conditions in Afghanistan worsened significantly between August 2025 and January 2026, particularly for women and girls. The report, presented Monday at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, said nearly every area of civilian life, from education and work to healthcare and freedom of movement has come under growing strain.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said about 21.9 million people; nearly half of Afghanistan’s population — will need humanitarian assistance this year. The report said the crisis has been aggravated by falling international aid, the return of roughly three million migrants from neighboring countries and the continuing effects of drought and economic collapse.

According to the report, since the Taliban tookover, girls remain barred from education beyond sixth grade and women continue to face sweeping restrictions on university study, employment, public services and freedom of movement. The UN said these measures have had a broad and deeply harmful impact on Afghanistan society, while also worsening poverty and dependence across households.

The report also pointed to growing pressure on free expression, saying journalists have been arbitrarily detained and women writers’ works removed from libraries. It further documented the continued use of punishments such as public executions and floggings, which the UN described as serious human rights violations.

The UN said a 48-hour internet shutdown in 2025 also disrupted vital services, including banking and healthcare, compounding daily hardship for ordinary Afghans. Türk described the situation as a “graveyard of human rights,” warning that millions are now living in extreme poverty without reliable access to food, water, education or medical care.

Afghanistan was already facing one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises before the latest deterioration. UN agencies have repeatedly warned that years of conflict, economic isolation, climate shocks and collapsing public services have left the country exceptionally vulnerable to further instability.

The report’s findings also come as international concern grows over forced and large-scale returns of Afghans from neighboring countries. Aid agencies have warned that additional returns could put even more pressure on already overstretched communities, services and humanitarian operations inside Afghanistan.

The United Nations has called on the Taliban to reverse discriminatory policies, restore women’s rights, end executions, and guarantee basic freedoms. It also urged the international community to prevent forced deportations of Afghan refugees and support international accountability mechanisms for rights violations.
