After Mosque and Structure Demolitions, Sambhal Imposes ₹75 Lakh Penalty for Encroachments
Jan 9, 2026

MEERUT: After razing at least 17 mosques and other structures in Sambhal, the district administration has escalated its crackdown on "illegal" encroachments by imposing heavy financial penalties on the structures built on government and pond land.
On Thursday, tehsildar Dhirendra Pratap Singh announced that violators would face a fine exceeding Rs 75 lakh for six properties including a mosque and madrassa, following the recent demolition drives in Asmoli area.
Sambhal DM Rajendra Pensiya told TOI, "Measures taken to impose the penalty will continue. It is being imposed for years of encroachment and losses to the ecological system. In the past one year, we recovered dozens of ponds on which constructions were made. The water-table of these blocks got alarmingly depleted. After reviving these water bodies, we're seeing a positive change."
Notably, significant penalties have been levied against several committees and individuals. Madina Mosque management faced a fine of Rs 9 lakh, while a staggering Rs 51 lakh was charged against a panel for operating an illegal madrassa.
In Raya Buzurg, Gosul Barra Mosque committee was fined Rs 6 lakh for "encroaching on pond land", and a marriage hall operator faced a Rs 6.4 lakh penalty. Additionally, individuals who built private houses on protected land had to pay over Rs 1 lakh.
Authorities have warned that "if the fines are not paid within the stipulated time frame, recovery certificates will be issued, potentially leading to property seizure or imprisonment." The tehsildar said that action against such illegal structures is being taken mainly in Salempur Salar (Hajipur) and Raya Buzurg villages.

3 Palestinians injured, vehicles torched during attack by Israeli settlers in West Bank
January 09, 2026

Israeli settlers set fire to several vehicles at the nursery, resulting in significant damage. (WAFA)
----------
LONDON: Three Palestinians were injured and several vehicles were set on fire during an attack on Thursday by a group of Israeli settlers on a plant nursery in the town of Deir Sharaf, about 5 miles west of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.
The settlers stormed Al-Junaidi nursery and assaulted people inside. A 65-year-old man’s hand was broken, and two other people were left with bruises and other injuries. All three were taken to hospital for treatment, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.
The attackers also set fire to several vehicles at the nursery, resulting in significant damage, the agency said.
The West Bank is home to nearly 3.3 million Palestinians and 700,000 settlers. The Israeli settlements there are considered illegal under international law, and widely viewed as an obstacle to hopes for the future establishment of a Palestinian state.
Attacks by settlers on Palestinian villages and properties in the West Bank have increased since the Gaza war began in October 2023. Palestinians have been killed in some incidents.

'Openly Islamophobic': Reform UK Councillor slammed for linking Muslim prayer to crime
8 January 2026

Cllr Carl Abbot says in a virtual meeting that it worries him 'when we see children in primary school being taught to pray the Muslim way'
----------
A senior Reform UK councillor in Leicestershire has been accused of making Islamophobic remarks during a council training session on extremism.
Footage of the virtual meeting, obtained by ITV News Central, shows the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Carl Abbott, questioning whether teaching Muslim children to pray in schools could lead to them being radicalised or bring about a spike in crime.
Cllr Carl Abbott said: "It really worries me when we see children in primary schools being taught to pray the Muslim way."
He adds: "If the Government are allowing this to be taught in schools, is this not a start of radicalisation of these children?"
Labour Group Leader, Cllr Jewel Miah, said: “I was shocked that a Cabinet member of Leicestershire could be so openly Islamophobic and tar children without any evidence.
"I couldn’t let that pass as he is a lead member responsible for social care and he is in a position of trust and authority and to bring such prejudice to the role is unacceptable.
"The public expect a certain level of professionalism in their elected officials and sadly this is lacking in certain Reform councillors on Leicestershire County council as evidenced by the number of complaints lodged against them and the numbers that have stepped back from leading Cabinet roles.
"Leicestershire has a large and growing ethnic population who live peacefully in the community without any issues, they don’t need elected officials stirring up nonsense and causing divisions where there is none."
Cllr Abbott admitted that he used to sing Christian hymns in school as a child, but questioned whether Muslim prayers in school might lead to a rise in crime.
Cllr Abbott said: “I’m of an age when I went to school, we went into assembly, we sang hymns. We were taught the Christian way etc.
"Will we see a further increase in crimes etc? Is this the start of something where you’re going to be overwhelmed?"
"My residents come to me and say this isn’t right... We are a Christian county end of story."
The remarks were made during a counter-terrorism training session hosted by county council officers and the police.
Cllr Abbott was appointed to the Cabinet in August 2025 following his election to the Stoney Stanton & Croft division earlier that year.
As the Cabinet Lead Member for Adult Social Care, he holds executive responsibility for the council’s services for vulnerable adults, the elderly, and safeguarding standards across the county.
Cllr Abbott took over the adult social care portfolio from Cllr Joseph Boam, who had held the position since the Reform UK administration was formed in May 2025.
Cllr Boam was removed from his positions as Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care in August 2025, just three months after his appointment.
Boam's departure followed reports of a "clash" and "differences of opinion" with Council Leader Dan Harrison, who described the social care portfolio as a "very demanding" role that the 22-year-old councillor found "uncomfortable."
Conservative leader of the opposition Deborah Taylor said: "It is inappropriate to suggest that teaching children to pray in accordance with Muslim practice fosters extremism.
"Muslims are an integral and respected part of our communities. For a Leicestershire County Councillor - particularly the Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities - to assert that Muslim prayer is linked to extremism is divisive, deeply concerning, and entirely incompatible with the standards expected of public office."
Defending Cllr Abbott, a Reform UK spokesperson said: "Councillor Abbott is absolutely correct: Britain is and remains a Christian country.
"He speaks on behalf of millions who are rightly alarmed by the rapid, unchecked transformation of our culture and values driven by successive Tory and Labour governments' obsessions with mass immigration."

'Don't need international law': Trump says 'my own morality' only restraint on global power; repeats Greenland push
Jan 9, 2026

As Donald Trump nears one year into his second presidential term, the US has pursued an increasingly aggressive military posture across multiple regions, even as Trump has intermittently spoken of "peace." In a New York Times interview, Trump went further, asserting that his "own morality" is the only constraint on his power to order military action anywhere in the world.
Trump’s remarks to The New York Times came days after he launched a strong military operation to topple Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, alongside issuing threats against a host of other countries and the autonomous territory of Greenland.
“Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me,” Trump told the newspaper when asked whether there were any limits on his global powers.
“I don’t need international law,” he added. “I’m not looking to hurt people.”
The Republican president then said that “I do” need to abide by international law, but qualified it by adding that “it depends what your definition of international law is.”
On China and Taiwan, Trump was asked about President Xi Jinping’s view of Taiwan as a separatist threat to China. Trump responded, “That’s up to him, what he’s going to be doing. But, you know, I’ve expressed to him that I would be very unhappy if he did that, and I don’t think he’ll do that. I hope he doesn’t.”
Referring to recent tensions between China and Taiwan, including threats to choke off the island, Trump said he believes the Chinese president would not take such steps while he remains in office. “He may do it after we have a different president, but I don’t think he’s going to do it with me as president,” Trump said.
Explaining why he felt the United States needed to possess Greenland, Trump told the NYT, “Because that’s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document.”
Turning to Europe, Trump said, “I think we’ll always get along with Europe, but I want them to shape up. I’m the one that got them to spend more on the, you know, more GDP on Nato. But if you look at Nato, Russia, I can tell you is not at all concerned with any other country but us. I’ve been very loyal to Europe. I’ve done a good job. If it weren’t for me, Russia would have all of Ukraine right now.”
The US is not a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which prosecutes war crimes, and has repeatedly rejected rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ top judicial body.
Trump himself has had multiple run-ins with domestic law. He has been impeached twice, faced a series of federal charges, including conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, which were later dropped after his re-election, and was convicted for covering up a hush money payment to a porn star.
Even as he proclaims himself a “peace president” and seeks the Nobel Prize, and so far made open demands about it.
Trump has launched a string of military operations during his second term.
In June, Trump ordered attacks on Iran’s nuclear program, and over the past year he has overseen strikes on Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Yemen -- and most recently, Venezuela, taking custody of Maduro.
Following Maduro’s capture, a more emboldened Trump has threatened several other countries, including Colombia, as well as Greenland, which is administered by Nato ally Denmark.
When asked whether his priority was preserving the Nato military alliance or acquiring Greenland, Trump told the Times: “it may be a choice.”
Some members of Congress, including a small number of Republicans, have sought to rein in Trump’s powers.
On Thursday, the Senate advanced a measure aimed at limiting presidential military action in Venezuela. However, even if it reaches his desk, Trump would likely veto it.
The billionaire president, who built his fortune as a property developer, also said that US ownership of Greenland is “what I feel is psychologically needed for success.”
Trump separately said he had no issue with his family conducting foreign business deals since his return to office.
“I prohibited them from doing business in my first term, and I got absolutely no credit for it,” Trump told the daily. “I found out that nobody cared, and I’m allowed to.”

Scores Killed As Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) Clash In Sambisa in Borno State
January 8, 2026
Scores of fighters were reportedly killed during a week-long surge of violent infighting between rival jihadist factions, Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), across parts of the Sambisa Forest axis in Borno State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the renewed hostilities began on January 3, following a coordinated ISWAP raid targeting Boko Haram camps around the Ali Ngulde axis of the Mandara Mountains.
According to the sources, the ISWAP assault was led by two commanders identified as Jundullah and Ibn Hataf. The fighters reportedly stormed camps loyal to the Boko Haram faction in what was described as a calculated offensive.
However, the attack was met with stiff resistance as Boko Haram fighters mounted a counter-ambush under the coordination of a field commander known as Abu-Rijal, also called Ba-Sulhu.
Dozens of ISWAP fighters were said to have been killed during the clash, while several others were captured alive, with weapons seized by Boko Haram fighters.
Footage that resurfaced during the week and was reportedly obtained by Zagazola Makama showed captured ISWAP fighters being executed before other combatants, amid claims of victory by the Boko Haram faction.
The video underscored the brutality that has continued to characterise the long-standing rivalry between the two terror groups within forested enclaves of the Lake Chad region in Borno State.
During the initial clashes, heavy weapons were said to have been recovered, including AK-47 rifles, a general-purpose machine gun, an anti-aircraft gun and assorted ammunition.
However, the balance of power reportedly shifted days later. On January 6, ISWAP fighters were said to have launched a retaliatory assault on a Boko Haram stronghold in the Sabil Huda axis.
The attack triggered a prolonged exchange of heavy gunfire that lasted several hours. Sources said ISWAP forces eventually overran the position, killing at least 12 Boko Haram fighters and seizing additional weapons.
Following the fighting, Boko Haram families, including women and children, were reportedly relocated from the contested camps to perceived safe areas around the Yale General axis.
Night operations were also said to have been conducted by both factions to track fleeing fighters, although no further confirmed engagements had been recorded as of Wednesday.
Sources noted that the renewed clashes reflect a long-running rivalry rooted in ideological differences, leadership disputes and competition over territory, resources and fighters.
Both Boko Haram and ISWAP factions were said to be re-arming and repositioning, raising fears of further confrontations in the coming days.

09 Jan 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — Malaysians have the right to feel disappointed when those in authority abuse their positions or engage in corruption, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, said today, warning that such conduct erodes public trust in the country’s institutions.
In a Facebook post, Sultan Ibrahim said the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law must always be upheld and defended, describing them as core principles that directly shape confidence in governance and public administration.
“The people have the right to feel disappointed when authorities are found to abuse their positions and engage in corruption,” His Majesty said.
“The preservation of these two principles of the Rukun Negara is critically important as it has a direct impact on public trust in the integrity of the nation’s governing and administrative institutions.
The remarks were shared following an audience granted by Sultan Ibrahim to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, at Istana Bukit Tunku this morning.

Hoax bomb threat triggers police sweep at Odisha courts and disrupts proceedings
Subhashish Mohanty
09.01.26
A hoax bomb threat put Odisha police on high alert on Thursday.
The district courts of Cuttack, Deogarh and Sambalpur on Thursday received an e-mail that threatened to blow them up with a bomb. The police were alerted and carried out an extensive combing operation on the court premises. Nothing was found.
The director-general of police (DGP) office in a release said: “An anonymous e-mail containing a threat to damage court premises has been received at several courts. The police have taken cognizance of the matter and initiated a thorough investigation. As a precautionary measure, police checking and enhanced security arrangements have been put in place at all concerned locations. The situation is under close monitoring. The public is advised not to panic and to cooperate with the police in maintaining security and assisting the investigation.”
The email stated that RDX explosives had been planted in the court premises and the blast would take place at 2.45pm. As a precaution, police evacuated people from the court premises. A thorough checking was held at courtrooms, corridors, offices and other areas to ward off any potential threat.
(DGP) Y.B. Khurania appealed people not to panic. Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi took up the matter with the senior police officials to ensure that law and order be maintained.
Canine squads and bomb disposal squads were deployed and frisking was conducted. The court proceedings were disrupted in three places, bringing huge inconvenience to the advocates and the litigants. Later in the evening, Majhi reviewed on the law and order situation of the state.
However, the courts later resumed operations in the afternoon after police confirmed that it was a hoax. Law minister Prithviraj Harichandan said: “The chief minister has ordered a probe. The source of the emails will be traced. The court procedures resumed normally.”
Talking to media-persons at the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) headquarters, party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said: “The safety of judicial institutions, including judges, lawyers, litigants, court staff and the general public, is of paramount importance. The concerned authorities must conduct an immediate, detailed and impartial investigation into this threat.”

Delhi Riots Case: Sharjeel Imam Denies ‘Mentor Link’ With Umar Khalid
Jan 9, 2026
New Delhi: Counsel for Sharjeel Imam on Thursday told the Karkardooma Court that there was no "mentor–protégé" relationship between Imam and co-accused Umar Khalid, arguing that no conspiracy could be established against him in the larger 2020 Delhi riots case.
Imam, whose bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court on Jan 5, has been charge-sheeted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His counsel told additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai that the prosecution had presented "no agreement of minds", which is essential to prove conspiracy and highlighted the absence of any calls, chats or communication linking Imam to Khalid or other accused.
Defence arguments also stressed that speeches attributed to Imam, including one at Jamia Millia Islamia in Dec 2019, had no causal link to the riots. The counsel added that Imam voluntarily distanced himself from Shaheen Bagh protests and later travelled to other states, where his speeches did not incite violence.
Addressing protected witness claims regarding US President Trump's India visit, the defence said Imam was arrested on Jan 28, 2020, and could not have participated in any planning, nor was he ever described as a "top conspirator".

‘Love jihad’ charges: Lucknow’s KGMU puts up notices seeking complaints, set to sack doctor
Maulshree Seth
January 9, 2026
As police probe one of its resident doctors for alleged forcible conversion, Lucknow’s King George Medical University (KGMU) put up notices across its campus Thursday asking its staffers to come forward anonymously if they have similar complaints against anyone on its rolls.
The university earlier formed an investigation committee under Dean, Paramedics, and Senior Professor, Department of Surgery, K K Singh – which was later expanded to include former Uttar Pradesh DGP Bhavesh Singh among its seven members – to probe allegations of involvement of other faculty members and individuals on the campus in “religious conversion”. This committee has now put up notices inviting complaints, at hostels, faculties and outside classes.
Rameezuddin Nayak, a Junior Resident at the Department of Pathology at KGMU and enrolled for MD, has been declared an absconder with the authorities announcing a reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone giving information on him. On January 5, his parents were arrested too on charges of alleged forcible religious conversion. Authorities have begun the process of seizing Nayak’s properties.
KGMU is also set to recommend “termination of Nayak’s services”, after its internal Vishakha Committee to check sexual harassment of women at workplace found him guilty of the charges levelled against him. Nayak attended a hearing of the panel before he went “missing”. The committee has submitted its report to the Vice-Chancellor, a senior KGMU official said.
The official added: “The committee found Nayak guilty on three fronts. First, he concealed his marriage while entering into a relationship with a fellow resident. Secondly, after she came to know of the previous marriage, he stalked her. Lastly, he has been found guilty of threatening the fellow resident that he would make their relationship as well as some videos public.”
Police have said that Nayak was married to a doctor from Agra, who too has levelled charges of forceful conversion against him and his parents.
K K Singh, who is part of the probe into religious conversion set up by KGMU, said that Nayak had not just been found guilty by the university’s committee, but had also “tarnished the image of the institution” as he had been absconding for 15 days.
“He is a serving doctor and is missing. There is a bounty of Rs 50,000 on him… Ours is a century-old institution and questions are being asked which are tarnishing the image of the university,” said Singh, adding that they were acting well within the rules. “If Nayak has nothing to hide, why is he on the run?”
The Senior Professor added: “Some have alleged that faculty members too are involved in a conversion racket. These are serious allegations, and the university formed a committee to probe the same… Initially, the committee circulated an email id, asking for complaints, but it was felt people might be hesitant to reveal their identities. Hence, we are now posting notices inviting such complaints across the campus.”
At the Pathology Department where Nayak worked, no one is willing to speak about the matter, with the notices sending a chill down corridors. A professor said they had never had any reason to complain against Nayak, who was good in academics and a good resident. “He usually kept to himself,” said a Professor.
The woman colleague who has accused him of attempted conversion is his junior and also has a good record, the professor said.
The professor added that they came to know of the allegations against Nayak only when the woman made an alleged suicide attempt and was brought to the trauma centre by her colleagues.
According to sources, the woman and her parents were offered accommodation within KGMU for their security by the university administration, but the parents preferred to go back to their native state. The woman will participate in the inquiry over the phone.
A senior faculty member said that apart from Nayak, the woman too had appeared before the internal committee. “He denied allegations that he had been married before and was asked to give this in an affidavit. He has been missing since then.”
Police officials said notices had been pasted regarding seizure of Nayak’s properties at his residence in Lucknow, and at his parents’ home in Uttar Pradesh, as well as in Uttarakhand.
“Our first priority is to arrest Nayak. Different teams are spread out to look for him and have conducted raids in Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Delhi, from wherever inputs are coming. We are also looking for those who conducted his nikah with the Agra doctor,” DCP, Lucknow West, Vishwajeet Srivastava said.

J-K security review: Amit Shah asks agencies to sustain gains achieved after abrogation of Article 370
Mukesh Ranjan
08 Jan 2026
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday evening chaired a high-level security review meeting on the prevailing situation in Jammu & Kashmir and instructed all agencies to remain alert and continue to work in synergy to ensure that the gains achieved after abrogation of Article 370 are sustained.
The Minister also reviewed the ongoing counter-terror operations in the Union Territory and told participating senior officials of the MHA and J&K administration that everything should be done to “achieve the goal of ‘terror-free J&K’ at the earliest," as all the resources would be made available in this endeavour.
The meeting, held here, was attended by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir, along with heads of central armed police forces and other senior officials.
During the review, Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government adopted a 'zero-tolerance' policy towards terrorism and made sustained, coordinated efforts to dismantle the terror ecosystem in J&K.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India is committed to establishing lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir and completely eliminating terrorism,” the MHA said, quoting the Home Minister, who went on to add that the terror ecosystem in the region had been 'crippled' due to sustained efforts.
Shah also praised security agencies for improving the overall security situation in J&K and directed them to continue counter-terror operations in a "mission mode", with a focus on targeting terrorist infrastructure and choking terror financing.

Operation Sindoor reinforced message that people must contribute to nation-building: IAF chief
08 Jan 2026
NEW DELHI: Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, on Thursday praised NCC cadets for their contribution during Operation Sindoor, and said the military action reinforced the message that life is not just about earning money or personal pursuits, but also doing something for the country.
Addressing cadets at the ongoing National Cadet Corps (NCC) Republic Day Camp at Delhi Cantonment, the IAF chief urged them to continue giving their best for the country, irrespective of whether they join the armed forces later or pursue other professions. He also exhorted them not to be deterred by failures but to emerge stronger from any setback, citing his own journey to the top post.
Singh said he too faced failures in his life and career, but he rose to become an IAF chief, which he described as something "that was destined".
"So, whether you are a soldier or a military leader in uniform, or a regular citizen, give your best and contribute to nation-building," he said.
The IAF chief told the NCC cadets that the role played by them in civil defence activities during Operation Sindoor motivated many people.
"Operation Sindoor has brought a lot of awareness. It is not just about earning money or doing things only for oneself in life, it is equally important to do something for the country," he asserted.
Operation Sindoor was carried out by the Indian armed forces in the early hours of May 7, 2025, targeting terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives last April.
A large number of NCC cadets assisted in emergency drills, blood donation camps and other civil defence activities during the operation, officials said.
A total of 2,406 NCC cadets, including 898 girls, from across the country are participating in the nearly month-long camp, which was inaugurated on Monday by Vice President C P Radhakrishnan. It will culminate with the NCC PM Rally on January 28.
The IAF chief, in his address, described NCC cadets as the "best among the youth" who are contributing to nation-building driven by values of unity, discipline and integrity.
He lauded the role played by the NCC in shaping disciplined, patriotic and value-driven citizens.
The air chief marshal highlighted the tremendous presence of NCC across the country, making it the largest uniformed organisation in the world, with girl cadets comprising around 40 per cent of its total current strength.
He urged the cadets to uphold nationalism beyond uniform and strive for continuous improvement with a never-say-die attitude in life.
Before his address, the IAF chief attended several cultural performances.
In one of the dance acts, a group of cadets depicted Operation Sindoor, portraying air strikes and air defence measures.
The performance included a poster carrying the logo of Operation Sindoor, while also honouring the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
In the evening, Air Chief Marshal Singh hosted a reception for a group of cadets from the NCC's three wings -- Army, Navy, and Air Force -- at the Air House in Delhi, the official residence of the IAF chief.
At the reception, the IAF chief interacted with many cadets and encouraged them to follow their passion.
Deputy Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal A K Bharti, who served as Director General Air Operations (DGAO) during Operation Sindoor; Director General, NCC, Lt Gen Virendra Vats and various other senior officers of the Corps were also present on the occasion.
Cadet Sgt.Diksha Tiwari, 18, was among those who attended the reception.
"I am competing in the 'best cadet' competition in the Air Force wing category, at the ongoing NCC Republic Day Camp. I wish to join the armed forces later. I will be the first in my family to join the armed forces if my dream comes true," she told PTI.
The cadet in the air force wing of the NCC, who belongs to the Bihar and Jharkhand Directorate of the Corps, said she is a native of Bihar and is studying English literature at a college in Ranchi.
A huge banner bearing the caption -- 'Indian Air Force Operation Sindoor -- Infallible, Impervious and Precise' -- was also displayed in the lawns of the Air House, while the Air Force band played patriotic tunes.
The banner also depicted the names of terror camps struck by the Indian forces during Operation Sindoor.
Air Chief Marshal Singh, Lt Gen Vats, and several NCC cadets also posed for pictures against the backdrop of the 'Op Sindoor' poster.

Why ‘celebrate’ after Vaishno Devi medical college’s MBBS course spiked, who is responsible for deficiencies: Omar Abdullah
Arun Sharma
January 9, 2026
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday called for responsibility to be fixed in case there were deficiencies in the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), saying that his government would accommodate students from the institute in medical colleges nearer to their homes in the Union Territory.
“You should ask questions to the university (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University) and its office bearers, right from top to the bottom, that if you had set up a medical college, why did it not pass the (National Medical Commission) inspection,” he told journalists in Jammu.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) late on Tuesday withdrew permission to run an MBBS course at SMVDIME. The NMC cited serious deficiencies in the institute’s infrastructure, including faculty strength and clinical material, among other things. The action also came amid protests by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti, a group of nearly 60 pro-RSS and pro-BJP organisations, which have been opposing admission of Muslim students at the institute. Of the 50 students in the college’s first-ever MBBS batch, 44 were Muslim.
On Thursday, when journalists drew his attention to BJP leaders’ allegations that the university did not maintain standards, Chief Minister Abdullah, without naming J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, said, “Then it is all the more a serious matter. Who heads the university and who is its Chancellor?… You should ask questions to him too.” The Lieutenant Governor is the chancellor of the university.
“I have asked the Health Minister (Sakina Itoo) to immediate intervene in the matter and ensure that students affected by the withdrawal of permission to the Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) are adjusted in government medical colleges nearer their homes so that they can continue their studies and become doctors to serve the people,” he said. He expressed regret that “while people elsewhere in the country fight to get a medical college, here a struggle was launched to shut down one that we already have”.
He also had a dig at the NMC, asking who conducted the inspection of the medical college before a Letter of Permission (LoP) was issued to it in the first place.
Pointing out that accommodating 50 students in other medical colleges is not a problem for the government, he said that someone should be held responsible and action taken against them for the damage that will be caused to the career of the students in future due to the closure of this medical college.
‘What is this happiness about?’
On Wednesday evening in Samba, the Chief Minister criticised the Sangarsh Samiti leaders and the BJP, alleging that they celebrated the NMC decision, and asking, “What is this happiness about?”
“If destroying children’s futures gives you happiness, then burst firecrackers,” he said, adding, “This time, out of 50 seats, 40 have gone to Kashmir. After one or two years, these 50 seats would have become 400 seats and out of those 400 seats, possibly 200 or 250 children would have been from Jammu.”
“Tomorrow, those children will not get medical college seats because you got the entire college shut down in the name of religion,” Abdullah said.
Responding to Omar Abdullah’s remarks, BJP’s J&K president, Sat Sharma, said the party did not hold any celebrations over the NMC decision and said that the commission took the decision after it found deficiencies in infrastructure. He accused the Chief Minister of politicising admissions in the medical college, allegedly by giving them a communal colour to divert people’s attention from the failure of his government.
Meanwhile, Manish Sahni, president of the J&K unit of Shiv Sena, decried the decision to withdraw permission that had earlier been issued to the medical college to run an MBBS course. While Sena activists had been agitating to move Muslim students out of SMVDIME, Sahni said that some solution should have been found for this issue, but instead, the Centre ended the issue itself.
J&K AAP leader Amit Kapoor also criticised the celebrations by the Sangarsh Samiti over the cancellation of permission to SMVDIME. “Some people are distributing sweets when the college is closed. Were there no Hindus in the college? Today, I am forced to say that Jammu is finished,” he said.
J&K Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma asked the BJP to explain “what Jammu achieved with the closure of a premier medical institute named after holy Mata Vaishno Devi ji”.
“Just to cover up the failure of the Health Ministry headed by J P Nadda, the Jammu region is made to suffer instead of changing the norms” regarding admissions, he said.
J&K’s ruling National Conference’s provincial president, Rattan Lal Gupta, said that SMVDIME, once projected as a flagship institution for the Jammu region, has now become a symbol of the BJP’s anti-Jammu and anti-youth approach, exposing its hollow and divisive politics. He said, “Withdrawal of permission is not a technical lapse, but a systematic failure reflecting the L-G administration’s inability to ensure basic compliance with MCI norms despite BJP’s control at the Centre.”
Budhal MLA Javed Iqbal Choudhary described the de-recognition of SMVDIME as “a dangerous and shameful reality” if the action was taken merely because Muslim students were selected on merit. “When merit becomes unacceptable, the country must seriously introspect about the direction it is moving in,” he said.
While the NMC has said its team found deficiencies in infrastructure during a surprise inspection earlier this month, officials from the medical college contested this claim, calling the inspection report a “farce” and “contrary to facts”. They alleged that the inspection team had visited the college premises with a pre-determined mind to close it down to assuage the protesters who opposed the admission of Muslim students from Kashmir, who got into the institute on the basis of their score in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

Bangladeshi Muslims To Hit 40% Of Assam Population In Census: Himanta Sarma
Jan 08, 2026
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that "Bangladeshi Muslims" could constitute nearly 40 per cent of the state's population in the next Census.
The chief minister asserted earlier that a demographic change has been happening in the northeastern state over the decades, with a steady increase in the population of Muslims of Bangladeshi origin.
"The Census will bring more unfortunate news for Assam. The number of Bangladeshi Muslims will touch nearly 40 per cent (of total state's population)," Sarma told reporters on sidelines of a government programme here.
In July last, Sarma had claimed that the population of Muslims in Assam would be almost equal to that of the Hindus by 2041 if the current growth rate continued.
According to the 2011 Census, Assam had 1.07 crore Muslims (34.22 per cent) and 1.92 crore Hindus (61.47 per cent) out of a total population of 3.12 crore.
The nationwide Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases -- houselisting and housing census from April to September 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027. The exercise, originally scheduled for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sarma also said all BJP MLAs and booth-level agents (BLAs) have been instructed to flag "any doubtful person" during the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls in the state.
"We will try that all doubtful Miya Muslim votes are cut. I have instructed all MLAs and BLAs to flag any doubtful person and register complaints through the proper process," he said.
Rejecting opposition allegation that the names of people not supporting the BJP was being deleted from the voters' list, Sarma said, "If Congress or any party thinks that eligible names have not been included, they can approach the authorities. However, the process is not by giving press conference, but through filing up the relevant forms (for inclusion/ exclusion of names in electoral rolls)."
He also took a swipe at the Congress, claiming that the party has lost relevance in the state and said, "Except for the illegal Bangladeshis, which indigenous person will vote for Congress?" Asserting that the opposition will have no impact in the Assembly polls, expected in March-April, Sarma said, "I don't see them working in the field. When we were in the opposition, we were in the field day and night. They have already put up their arms." On BJP's seat-sharing plans for the state polls, Sarma said the decision will be taken by February 15.

Why Pinarayi Vijayan is going soft on an Ezhava leader’s anti-Muslim hate speech
Anand Kochukudy
08 January, 2026
Vellappally Natesan, once hailed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as Kerala’s Pravin Togadia, is redefining the state’s communal politics with some support from the Left government. The general secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, which represents Kerala’s numerically significant Ezhava community, is back in the news with yet another communal remark, this time targeting a journalist by calling the reporter a “terrorist” at a press conference.
Kerala, which prides itself on its secular moorings, has lately given Natesan a free pass to deliver hate speech. His rabble-rousing became a flashpoint in April last year when he made statements demonising the Muslim-majority Malappuram district. Soon after, Vijayan hailed his leadership at an event held to mark the 30th anniversary of his election as SNDP Yogam general secretary, completely ignoring his polarising rhetoric delivered just days ago. This patronage has only emboldened Natesan.
A pattern seems to have emerged. Vijayan refuses to be drawn into Natesan’s divisive statements, but offers him patronage that further emboldens him.
Local body poll aftermath
Ahead of the recent local body polls, the chief minister gave him a ride in his official vehicle for the Global Ayyappa Devotee event, organised under the aegis of the state government. The significance of this symbolic act was not lost on anyone, with even minority groups supportive of the Left government accusing it of majoritarian appeasement.
The local body poll results saw the Left suffer setbacks in the Muslim-majority Malabar region as well as Christian-dominated central Travancore. While Vijayan put on a brave face in the aftermath, Binoy Viswam — state secretary of ally Communist Party of India (CPI) — chose to highlight Natesan’s dubious role and publicly disowned the chief minister’s act of giving him a ride.
In the latest instance, Natesan lost patience with a reporter outside the Sivagiri Mutt when he fact-checked the Ezhava leader’s claims on non-functioning educational institutions in Malappuram. The reporter was only guilty of asking what prevented the Vijayan government from allotting institutions during its two terms and why he was still blaming the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) education minister from a decade ago.
The following day, Natesan called a press conference and branded the reporter a “terrorist”, while referring to his past association with the IUML as a student activist. Natesan also targeted Binoy Vishwam, calling the CPI members “traitors”.
Natesan as a Marxist tool?
The SNDP Yogam general secretary, who continues to bat for a third term for Vijayan, has intensified his attacks on the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF). He has even claimed that there were no riots during Vijayan’s two terms, while reminding people of the Marad riots under AK Antony in 2002-2003. This is an unusual approach, given that the riots, which claimed 13 lives, remain largely forgotten in Kerala’s collective psyche. Even the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hasn’t raked the issue up as part of its election propaganda.
However, in what seemed like a coordinated move, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) central committee member AK Balan echoed Natesan. He warned people of Marad redux if the UDF came to power, and claimed that the Jamaat-e-Islami would control the home ministry.
It is becoming increasingly evident that Natesan enjoys the backing of the state government on his utterances and is perhaps laying the groundwork for a polarising campaign in the lead-up to the assembly polls.
‘Kerala’s Togadia’
In 2015, Natesan led the Samatva Munnetta Yatra across Kerala, calling for Hindu unity, after charting an electoral understanding between the SNDP and the BJP for the local body polls.
During the Yatra, the state government led by Oommen Chandy offered a solatium of Rs 10 lakhs to Noushad, an auto-rickshaw driver in Kozhikode, who died trying to save the lives of migrant labourers in an open drain. Natesan gave a communal angle to it by raking up the religion of the man, drawing widespread condemnation across the political divide, including from Pinarayi Vijayan, VS Achuthanandan and then Congress chief VM Sudheeran.
The culmination of the Yatra saw the launch of the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), the political outfit of the SNDP, led by his son Tushar Vellappally. Vijayan wrote a series of articles in the CPI-M organ Deshabhimani and People’s Democracy, accusing Natesan of betraying the renaissance values instilled by Sree Narayana Guru, taking the SNDP to the BJP stables.
Today, the BDJS continues to be the only significant ally of the BJP in Kerala, but Natesan is in the good books of Vijayan. This is bizarre, given that it was the CPI-M – through VS Achuthanandan – that accused Natesan of financial misappropriation, a charge that continues to be heard in the courts. Natesan was also quizzed by the Enforcement Directorate in 2018. All this explains his dual loyalty to the Left and the BJP.
Social engineering vs political mobilisation
According to Marxist leaders, journalist-turned-Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas mediated between Vijayan and Natesan soon after the change of guard in 2016.
Unlike the CPI-M’s historical approach in Kerala, Vijayan’s tenure has seen a switch from class-based political mobilisation to social engineering. While it may have partly been necessitated on the account of Kerala society undergoing a change of character in the post-liberalisation phase, with the neo-middle-class outnumbering the working-class cadres of the party, Vijayan has taken that to a whole new level.
According to Congress veteran Cherian Philip, who was a part of Vijayan’s inner circle during his first term (2016-2021), this brought unexpected rewards, beginning with the 2018 bypoll held in the Congress stronghold of his native Chengannur. And nowhere was the strategy more successful than in the 2021 Assembly election, when Vijayan won another term, bucking a four-decade-old trend.
Social engineering basically involves extending patronage to community leaders in exchange for votes. This has expanded to dog-whistle politics and the pitting of communities against one another. For instance, in 2021, the Left tapped into Islamophobic sentiment among Christians in Central Travancore and tailored its campaign to reap electoral gains, while simultaneously mobilising around issues such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Muslim-majority Malabar.
A case of diminishing returns
The Left Democratic Front (LDF)’s drubbing in Kerala in the 2019 Lok Sabha election was considered an isolated event by the CPI-M — an impact of the Sabarimala protests and Rahul Gandhi contesting from Wayanad. Buoyed by the performance in the Assembly poll, in which the Left swept the Muslim-dominated seats beyond IUML strongholds in Malappuram, the CPI-M doubled down on CAA and Palestine in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Only there was a repeat of 2019, with the CPI-M reduced to a solitary seat, level with the BJP, which opened its account through actor Suresh Gopi in Thrissur.
Beyond 2019, there was something that bothered the CPI-M about its performance in 2024 — the loss of its Ezhava vote bank to the BJP in seats such as Alappuzha and Attingal, where the latter finished a close third. Perhaps Natesan’s hate campaign against Muslims was driven by the Left’s necessity to win back its core voters. This explains why Vijayan has treated Natesan’s hate speech with kid-gloves.
Now, the question that remains is whether the Left under Vijayan will go for a change of course following the defeat in the local body polls amid the CPI’s reservations.
It won’t.
Wither Kerala’s social fabric
According to a veteran CPI-M leader who spoke to me on condition of anonymity, the Marxist party – particularly Vijayan – sees the local body poll verdict differently from the CPI and the mainstream media.
When the party met to take stock, one question that lingered was: why did the majoritarian focus and anti-Muslim rhetoric in the campaign not sway the Christians of Central Travancore? The strategy was aimed at consolidation of Hindu and Christian votes, with CPI-M already on a strong wicket in Malabar.
According to Vijayan’s calculation, even if there was a backlash against the Left from Muslims, the CPI-M has enough leverage in Kannur and Palakkad to win 30 of the 60 seats in the Malabar region. But that calculation went awry in Central Travancore, where the Christians went back to the UDF with a vengeance.
The CPI-M veteran pointed to the party’s better performance in the Hindu-dominated pockets in Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Alappuzha and Thrissur. He stated that it is likely that the UDF will be targeted even more heavily, invoking Jamaat-e-Islami and the likelihood of IUML’s PK Kunhalikutty being accorded the position of deputy CM in the coming days. “There is no question of a change of course now,” he said.
How such a strategy would play into the BJP’s hands and whether it will affect Kerala’s social fabric is anyone’s guess.

Iran forces accused of firing on protesters as death toll mounts
January 08, 2026
PARIS: Rights groups accused Iranian security forces of shooting at demonstrators as the death toll mounted on Thursday from a crackdown on economic protests and a watchdog reported an Internet blackout across the Islamic republic.
Twelve days of protests have troubled the clerical authorities under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei already battling an economic crisis after years of sanctions and recovering from the June war against Israel.
US President Donald Trump meanwhile threatened on Thursday to take severe action against Iran if its authorities “start killing people,” warning Washington would “hit them very hard.”
The movement, which originated with a shutdown on the Tehran bazaar on December 28 after the rial plunged to record lows, has spread nationwide and is now being marked by larger-scale demonstrations.
Videos on social media showed that protests were again taking place Thursday.
A large crowd was seen gathering on the vast Ayatollah Kashani Boulevard in the northwest of capital Tehran, according to social media images verified by AFP, while other images showed a crowd demonstrating in the western city of Abadan.
Local media and official statements have reported at least 21 people, including security forces, killed since the unrest began, according to an AFP tally.
On Wednesday, an Iranian police officer was stabbed to death west of Tehran “during efforts to control unrest,” the Iranian Fars news agency said.
But raising its own toll based on verified deaths, the Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights said security forces had killed at least 45 protesters, including eight minors.
The NGO said Wednesday was the bloodiest day since the demonstrations began, with 13 protesters confirmed to have been killed.
“The evidence shows that the scope of the crackdown is becoming more violent and more extensive every day,” said IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, adding hundreds more have been wounded and more than 2,000 arrested.
Online watchdog Netblocks said on Thursday that “live metrics show Iran is now in the midst of a nationwide Internet blackout.”
‘Utmost restraint’
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian called for “utmost restraint” in handling demonstrations, saying “any violent or coercive behavior should be avoided.”
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, meanwhile, condemned the “excessive use of force” against protesters.
With the protests now spreading across Iran, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said rallies had taken place in 348 locations in all of Iran’s 31 provinces.
Reza Pahlavi, the son of the shah ousted by the 1979 Islamic revolution and a key exiled opposition figure, urged major new protests on Thursday.
Before the blackout, he warned that the “frightened” authorities could cut Internet access to prevent information filtering out.
Iraq-based Iranian Kurdish opposition parties called for a general strike on Thursday in Kurdish-populated areas in western Iran.
The Hengaw rights group said the call had been widely followed in some 30 towns and cities, posting footage of shuttered shops in the western provinces of Ilam, Kermanshah and Lorestan.
It accused authorities of firing on demonstrators in Kermanshah and the nearby town of Kamyaran to the north, injuring several protesters, as well as cutting the Internet in the region.
HRANA also posted footage it said showed security forces firing on protesters with handguns in Kermanshah.
IHR said a woman protester was shot directly in the eye during a protest late Wednesday in Abadan.
Protesters in Kuhchenar in the southern Fars province cheered overnight as they pulled down a statue of the former foreign operations commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US strike in January 2020, in a video verified by AFP.
‘Unlawful force’
Demonstrators are repeating slogans against the clerical leadership, including “Pahlavi will return” and “Seyyed Ali will be toppled,” in reference to Khamenei.
The movement has also spread to universities and final exams at a major university in Tehran, the Amir Kabir university, have been postponed for a week, according to ISNA news agency.
The protests are the biggest in Iran since the last major protest wave in 2022-2023 which was sparked by the custody death of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.
Rights groups have also accused authorities of resorting to tactics including raiding hospitals to detain wounded protesters.
“Iran’s security forces have injured and killed both protesters and bystanders,” said Amnesty International, accusing authorities of using “unlawful force.”

What next for Lebanon after army completes first phase of Hezbollah disarmament?
NAJIA HOUSSARI
TAREK ALI AHMAD
January 09, 2026
BEIRUT: The Lebanese army declared on Thursday that progress on the second phase of a plan to place all weapons under state authority depends on external factors, highlighting constraints facing the state.
These include continued Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, the occupation of several Lebanese sites, the establishment of buffer zones, repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement, and delays in the delivery of promised military capabilities to the army.
The statements were made during a cabinet session on Thursday, where the army announced the successful completion of the first phase of Hezbollah disarmament south of the Litani River.
Army Commander Gen. Rodolphe Haykal briefed ministers on the progress and confirmed that preparations are underway to assess conditions for launching the second phase, which will extend northward to the area between the Litani and Awali rivers.
The Lebanese army’s stance comes at a time of mounting Israeli and US pressure on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah across all Lebanese territory, alongside Israeli skepticism about the army’s ability to carry out such a task.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah has refused to surrender its weapons north of the Litani River, despite the Lebanese state’s commitment to restoring “security and stability to the southern border and preventing its use as a launch pad for any military operations, in accordance with its decision to extend its authority exclusively through its own forces over all Lebanese territory.”
A Lebanese official told Arab News that the army’s position is based on the fact that Lebanon has fulfilled all its obligations within the limits of the army’s available resources in implementing what is required under the ceasefire agreement south of the Litani River.
The Lebanese Army, the source said, is leaning toward adopting a “weapons containment” strategy north of the Litani River.
“Talking about north of the Litani River means all of Lebanon, and therefore it is impossible to set a timeframe for implementation, given the army’s limited logistical capabilities,” the source said.
The weapons containment option ensures that no weapons are moved, imported, smuggled, or used within Lebanon. “This should concern no one,” the source added.
The mechanism committee, tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Israel-Hezbollah 2024 ceasefire agreement, receives regular updates on the disarmament.
Regarding whether Lebanon fears an Israeli military escalation in light of the army leadership’s stance, the source said that Lebanon is subjected to daily Israeli attacks despite fulfilling all its obligations.
“South of the Litani River, the only positions that could be confiscated are those held by the Israeli army,” the source added.
Michael Young, senior editor at the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, said the likelihood of Lebanon entering a full-blown war with Israel remains minimal.
“If the Israelis and the Americans are pushing and the Lebanese are conceding, then the imperative to immediately escalate to a much larger conflict, which may not actually lead to any kind of decisive results, is going to be lessened,” he told Arab News.
However, Young warned that if the implementation of disarmament is delayed or obstructed for too long, Israel may eventually decide to escalate militarily.
Cabinet spokesman and Minister of Information Paul Morcos announced that the army will present a plan in February to begin the second phase of its deployment, aimed at withdrawing weapons from areas north of the Litani River.
Meanwhile, the cabinet commended the army’s achievements and called for the swift implementation of all phases of the disarmament plan.
The army command reiterated its ongoing coordination with UNIFIL and the ceasefire monitoring mechanism, which it said would contribute to greater stability south of the Litani River.
In a statement, the army thanked the countries participating in UNIFIL, highlighting the work of the US and French teams supporting the mechanism’s work.
It also commended “the awareness and constructive cooperation of southern citizens, whose commitment to security and stability was crucial to the successful implementation of the first phase.”
The army added that the achievement reflects “deep mutual trust between the people and the military institution.”
The command further commended the dedication and sacrifices of its soldiers, noting they carried out their duties under harsh conditions and constant danger, from landmines and unexploded ordnance to direct Israeli strikes targeting their deployment zones.
Following the army’s announcement on completing the first phase of its disarmament plan, President Joseph Aoun said the state “stands firmly behind the Lebanese Armed Forces in their mission to extend authority and restore sovereignty, particularly in the south.”
Aoun emphasized that the army’s deployment south of the Litani River stems from a unified national decision rooted in the constitution and international commitments.
He reiterated his call for a full Israeli withdrawal, release of prisoners, and respect for the cessation of hostilities as key to restoring state control, ensuring the safe return of displaced civilians to the southern regions, and enabling reconstruction.
Aoun also urged international backing to strengthen the army’s capabilities and prevent the transfer of arms to non-state actors. Praising the resilience of southern communities, he reaffirmed their trust in the army as Lebanon’s sole legitimate protector.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri voiced support for the army’s statement but stressed that “the mission remains incomplete due to Israel’s ongoing occupation of Lebanese territory, daily violations, and obstruction of the army’s work despite unfulfilled promises of military support.”
Berri warned that Israel’s actions, including the targeting of UNIFIL and calls to end their mandate, threaten the implementation of UN Resolution 1701.
He added that “the south longs for the presence and protection of its army,” and demanded Israel’s full withdrawal from Lebanese land and airspace.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also praised “the Lebanese command, officers and soldiers” for completing the first phase of disarmament, and paid tribute to the soldiers killed on that mission.
He stressed the urgent need for logistical and financial support to advance to the next phase and said securing the return of displaced residents and launching reconstruction in the south are top priorities over the coming weeks, pending parliament’s approval of a World Bank loan.
Salam also reaffirmed the state’s push for Arab and international support to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied areas, end its attacks, and release Lebanese detainees — key steps to restoring full sovereignty.
UN Special Coordinator Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert praised the progress of the Lebanese army in a post on X, saying: “Great to see the Lebanese army confirm it has assumed operational control south of the Litani.
“This is undeniable progress. Hard work lies ahead. But today’s milestone shows commitment and reinforces the role of the mechanism established by the November 2024 arrangement.”
For his part, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, concluding his visit to Lebanon before heading to Syria, emphasized the role of UNIFIL in maintaining stability and advancing the implementation of Resolution 1701 until the end of the mission’s mandate in December 2026, despite recent budget cuts.
In recent months, UNIFIL troops have come under Israeli fire amid tensions over their reports documenting Israeli violations south of the Litani River, particularly breaches of the Blue Line, including the construction of installations on Lebanese territory.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office described Lebanon’s disarmament efforts as “encouraging but insufficient,” stressing that the ceasefire agreement requires Hezbollah’s full disarmament, which it called vital for both Israeli security and Lebanon’s future.
The statement also accused Iran of aiding Hezbollah’s rearmament. Meanwhile, the Israeli army claimed Hezbollah remains active south of the Litani River and said the Lebanese army’s declaration does not reflect “the reality on the ground.”
Young said Israel overstates the threat posed by Hezbollah to gain leverage in Washington, adding that Hezbollah has been significantly weakened despite its presence in the country.
He noted the party’s political isolation, lack of broader support, and growing internal pressure, particularly due to the displacement of “hundreds of thousands of Shiites whose villages are destroyed.”
“There is a terrible burden on the party,” he said. “It cannot indefinitely ignore the fate of these people.”
Young argued that Hezbollah is “not in a position to mount any kind of military operation across the border,” pointing to the fact that “both the Lebanese army, the Lebanese society and the Lebanese state — all of them oppose this.”
Israeli newspapers hinted that Israel is preparing for a large-scale operation in Lebanon. One paper, Maariv, accused Lebanese army commanders of presenting an “inaccurate narrative.”
It said the Israeli military plans to present photos and videos gathered by military intelligence and the Northern Command, allegedly showing Hezbollah weapons and missile storage sites, including buildings north of the Litani River.
It added that offensive plans are finalized and awaiting political approval.
Amid these developments, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beirut for meetings with Lebanon’s president, parliament speaker, prime minister, and foreign minister to discuss regional developments and bilateral relations.
His visit comes after a year of strained Lebanese-Iranian ties, marked by Iran’s pro-Hezbollah stance in its conflict with Israel — positions viewed by Beirut as interference in Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Facing pressure from both Israel and the US, Araghchi said: “Iran does not seek war, but it is ready for it.” He added that Tehran remains open to negotiations “based on mutual respect and shared interests,” asserting that US-Israeli strategies against Iran have “failed miserably.”
While Hezbollah did not issue an immediate response to the positions taken by the army and state officials, MP Kassem Hachem described the army’s statement as “expressing the will of the Lebanese people and the army’s commitment to Lebanon’s interests, free from any dictates or pressure.”
He told Arab News that Israel’s reaction to the army’s statement “only confirms the hostile intentions it has long harbored toward Lebanon,” stressing that the international community, particularly ceasefire sponsors, must recognize the risks of allowing Israel to evade accountability.
Hachem added that such impunity would undermine international norms and resolutions, especially as the Mechanism Committee continues to observe the “positive role” played by the Lebanese army and its actions on the ground.

Israel bars some aid workers from Gaza as groups face suspension
January 08, 2026
GENEVA/CAIRO/JERUSALEM: Israel said on Thursday it had barred entry to Gaza of foreign medical and humanitarian staff whose organizations were ordered to cease operations unless they register employee details with Israeli authorities and meet other new rules.
Fearing a renewed humanitarian crisis if medical and aid services can suddenly no longer access war-shattered Gaza, some of the 37 international nongovernmental organizations that were ordered to halt work are weighing whether to submit staff names to Israeli authorities, two aid sources told Reuters.
Three of the aid groups said their foreign staff were told by Israeli authorities this week they could not enter Gaza.
Israel’s diaspora ministry, which manages the registration process, says the measures are meant to prevent diversions of aid by Palestinian armed groups. NGOs say sharing staff details poses too much of a risk, pointing to the hundreds of aid workers who were killed or injured during the two-year Gaza war.
Israel has shared little evidence of aid being diverted in the Palestinian enclave, an allegation that was disputed in a US government analysis.
The diaspora ministry said that while the NGOs had been granted 60 days to conclude operations, “the entry of foreign personnel into Gaza is not approved.” It said international staff with “approved organizations” including the United Nations could continue work as usual.
Three prominent global NGOs — Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), Medecins du Monde Suisse and the Danish Refugee Council — said their international staff were refused entry to Gaza this week. Foreign aid staff had generally been permitted to rotate in and out of Gaza since the start of the war.
“If we don’t have somebody in a key position, such as the emergency coordinator in charge of operations, then we either have to compensate, or we have a gap” in aid service, said Anna Halford, Gaza emergency coordinator at MSF.
'System breaks down'
Israel’s government said some 23 aid groups had agreed to the new registration rules, meaning humanitarian goods will continue to get into Gaza.
But a UN-led coordination body has said the international groups that have registered could meet only a fraction of the required humanitarian response in the devastated Gaza Strip, where homelessness and hunger remain rife.
Some of the 37 banned groups operate specialized services like field hospitals, aid officials say. MSF bolsters six Gaza health ministry hospitals and runs two field hospitals. The Medicos del Mundo NGO screens Gaza residents for malnutrition and provides mental health services.
“Without nutritional staff doing the screening and primary health care centers doing the therapeutic feeding and referral of patients with severe malnutrition to in-patient care — the whole system breaks down,” an aid source told Reuters.
Fearing the loss of those essential services for Gaza’s two million residents, some aid groups are considering reversing course and agreeing to the new registration rules.
“The essence of the debate (for aid groups) is how to safeguard their principles, humanitarian standards, and the safety of the local staff while being able to continue the services,” a senior aid source said.
COGAT, the Israeli defense ministry unit that controls access to Gaza, said the NGOs’ conduct “raises suspicion regarding the parties with whom they operate” in Gaza, but they remained free to register with the diaspora ministry.
'Everything is missing'
Samira Al-Ashqar, 40, who fled her Beit Lahia home to Al-Ansar camp in north Gaza with her disabled husband and nine others during the war, depends on Oxfam — one of the aid groups facing an Israeli ban — for food and financial support.
“Now, after the war, everything is missing, and things have become dire ... If these institutions were to stop, the people of Gaza would face complete devastation,” Al-Ashqar said.
Mohamed Abu Selmia, head of Gaza’s Al Shifa Hospital, told Reuters the banning of groups like MSF could affect hundreds of thousands of people.
“The Israeli occupation’s decision comes at a time of unprecedented deterioration in health conditions. We suffer acute shortages of medication that reach 100 percent in some areas, and 55 percent overall,” he said.
MSF said an Israeli ban could also mean that foreign aid groups would no longer be able to pay local staff in Gaza because Israel could block bank transfers.

Jordan-EU Summit confirms commitment to regional security, investment
January 08, 2026
LONDON: King Abdullah II of Jordan hosted the first Jordan-EU Summit in Amman on Thursday, with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in attendance.
King Abdullah noted that the summit had built on last year’s Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership agreement with the EU, enhancing political dialogue and economic cooperation, according to the Jordan News Agency.
He spoke of his appreciation of the EU’s support for Jordan’s modernization and highlighted the country’s readiness to enhance cooperation in security, defense, education, and youth empowerment.
“Our partnership is also vital in supporting sustainable growth, job creation, and innovation, by strengthening economic resilience and expanding cooperation in trade and investment,” King Abdullah added.
Crown Prince Hussein attended the expanded meeting with EU leaders at Al-Husseiniya Palace.
Jordan and the EU are to hold an investment conference in April to enhance economic partnerships between the two parties, while the first EU-Jordan Security and Defense Dialogue is also scheduled for this year in Amman.
Costa said that bilateral relations with Jordan were strong and would continue to strengthen. He praised Jordan’s initiatives to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza by establishing air and land corridors; its contribution to regional stability; its efforts to de-escalate tensions; and its pursuit of peace.
Von der Leyen said that King Abdullah was a key partner for Europe in the Middle East, and that relations between the EU and Jordan were “built on stability, on security, but also on prosperity.”
She added: “In times of growing geopolitical challenges, it is good to know that the European Union and Jordan stand side by side, because this is what friends do."
She noted that the EU aimed to increase investments in Jordan to 1.4 billion euros.
The summit also covered regional and international developments, including Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic, Ukraine, the reform of the Palestinian Authority, and Israeli settlement policy in the West Bank.
Jordan’s Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan, Jordan’s Ambassador to Belgium Yousef Bataineh, and a number of European officials also attended the summit.

Israel says Lebanon is not doing enough to disarm Hezbollah
January 08, 2026
JERUSALEM/BEIRUT: Israel said Lebanon’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah are far from sufficient after the Lebanese army declared that it had established operational control in the south, raising pressure on Lebanese leaders who fear Israel could escalate strikes.
In line with US demands, the Lebanese government has been seeking to restrict the possession of arms to state control since the Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah emerged badly weakened from a war with Israel in 2024.
The Lebanese army said on Thursday that the goals of the first phase of its plan had been achieved in an “effective and tangible way,” and that it had secured areas under its authority south of the Litani river — excluding positions still occupied by Israeli forces.
ISRAEL SAYS HEZBOLLAH TRYING TO REARM
Following the army’s statement, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Hezbollah must be fully disarmed, citing a US-brokered ceasefire with Lebanon in November 2024.
While efforts toward this end by Lebanon’s government and army were “an encouraging beginning ... they are far from sufficient, as evidenced by Hezbollah’s efforts to rearm and rebuild its terror infrastructure with Iranian support.”
Hezbollah’s disarmament was “imperative for Israel’s security and Lebanon’s future,” it said.
Israel has been conducting near daily strikes in the south and sometimes more widely in Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of trying to reestablish infrastructure and Beirut of failing to uphold the 2024 ceasefire agreement.
There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah, which says it has respected the ceasefire in the south and that the agreement does not apply to the rest of Lebanon.
The Lebanese army had set a year-end deadline to clear non-state weaponry from the south, before moving on to other areas of the country. In its statement, the army said there was more work to be done to clear unexploded ordnance and tunnels.

Secrecy, mines and Israeli strikes complicate removal of Assad-era chemical weapons, says Syrian envoy
Ephrem Kossaify
January 08, 2026
NEW YORK CITY: Syria’s envoy to the UN said on Thursday that secrecy surrounding the nation’s former chemical weapons program, security risks from land mines and other unexploded ordnance, and Israel’s targeting of suspected weapons sites continue to complicate his government’s efforts to eliminate Assad-era chemical weapons.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting about Syria’s chemical weapons, Ambassador Ibrahim Olabi said the nation’s new authorities had nevertheless made significant progress over the past year in their work with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Despite what he described as “major challenges,” Syria had moved the issue “from a stage of suspicion and manipulation to one of partnership with the OPCW,” he said, adding: “Syria has achieved a qualitative leap in its cooperation with the OPCW.”
This shift is reflected in recent decisions by the watchdog’s executive council and changing positions among its member states, Olabi noted.
Syria’s chemical weapons program has been under international scrutiny since the early years of the country’s civil war, when repeated chemical attacks killed or injured large numbers of civilians. The deadliest incident occurred in 2013 in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta, when a sarin attack killed hundreds and triggered international efforts to dismantle the country’s chemical arsenal.
Olabi said the authorities that took over after President Bashar Assad and his regime were toppled in December 2024 were confronting what he called the “heavy legacy of the Assad era,” during which chemical weapons were widely used against civilians. He described the program as an inherited burden rather than a policy of the new government.
“The chemical file is a prime example of these inherited issues, issues of which we were victims,” he added.
Syrian authorities have granted OPCW experts unrestricted access during eight deployments that included visits to 23 sites, he said, and since October have been hosting what he described as the organization’s longest continuous presence in the country.
“This marks the beginning of a sustained presence of the OPCW in Syria,” Olabi added.
Adedeji Ebo, the UN’s deputy high representative for disarmament affairs, said OPCW teams visited 19 locations in Syria last year, four of them previously declared chemical weapons sites and 15 suspected locations, where they conducted interviews and collected samples in their attempts to determine the full scope of undeclared chemical weapons activity.
Some other sites are in dangerous areas, he added, which poses significant risks to both Syrian and international personnel.
“On-site destruction may be required where conditions prevent safe removal,” Ebo said, noting that a recent OPCW decision authorizing expedited on-site destruction of weapons marked a positive step forward.
He also highlighted the reestablishment of Syria’s National Authority for the OPCW and the watchdog’s current, continuous presence in Damascus.
Olabi said Syrian national teams had identified two sites containing empty cylinders previously used to store toxic chemicals and had immediately reported them to the OPCW. Syrian authorities also handed over about 6,000 documents relating to the former regime’s chemical weapons program, he added, and helped arrange interviews with 14 witnesses, including individuals who were involved with the program.
Syrian authorities were also cooperating with international investigators examining chemical attacks by Assad’s government, he said, and accountability and justice for the victims are priorities for the new authorities.
“Syria reiterates its determination to continue the efforts to close this chapter,” Olabi said, adding that there was “no place for chemical weapons in today’s world.”

Syrian government announces ceasefire in Aleppo
January 09, 2026
DAMASCUS: Damascus: Syria’s defense ministry announced a ceasefire in several neighborhoods of Aleppo on Friday after days of deadly clashes with Kurdish fighters.
“To prevent any slide toward a new military escalation within residential neighborhoods, the Ministry of Defense announces ... a ceasefire in the vicinity of the Sheikh Maqsoud, Alashrafieh, and Bani Zeid neighborhoods of Aleppo, effective from 3:00 am,” the ministry wrote in a statement.
Syrian government forces have been fighting the Kurdish-led SDF force in Aleppo, where at least 21 people have been killed in several days of clashes.
Both sides have traded blame over who started the clashes on Tuesday, which comes as implementation stalls on a deal to merge the Kurds’ administration and military into the government.
The worst violence in Aleppo since Syria’s Islamist authorities took power has also highlighted regional tensions between Damascus ally Turkiye and Israel, which condemned what it described as attacks against the Kurds.

Lebanon central bank seeks to recuperate embezzled funds to bolster liquidity, governor says
January 08, 2026
BEIRUT: Lebanon’s central bank will seek the repayment of public funds embezzled by at least one former central bank official and by lawyers and commercial bankers, to help guarantee its liquidity, Central Bank Governor Karim Souaid said on Thursday.
Souaid did not name Riad Salameh, the former central bank governor whose 30-year term ended in disgrace amid investigations into whether he embezzled more than $300 million between 2002 and 2015.
Instead Souaid told reporters that the central bank had filed a criminal complaint against an unnamed former official of the central bank, a former banker and a lawyer over alleged illicit enrichment through misuse of public funds.
He said the operations were carried out through four offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands that he did not name.
COORDINATING WITH FRENCH INVESTIGATORS
Souaid said the bank would become a primary plaintiff in the state’s investigation against Forry Associates, suspected of receiving commissions from commercial banks and transferring them out of the country.
Forry is controlled by Salameh’s brother, Raja. Both Raja and Riad Salameh deny wrongdoing.
The pair are under investigation in France, Germany, Switzerland and other countries over the alleged embezzlement. Souaid said he would travel to France to meet with the investigators this month “to exchange highly sensitive information held by the French authorities.”
Souaid would not say how many people in total were suspected of involvement in the scheme or the full sum now thought to have been embezzled.
“Our mission is to pursue these individuals and entities, seek their conviction, and seize their movable and immovable assets and the proceeds of their illicit activities to ensure liquidity for the rightful owners, first and foremost the depositors,” he said.
A Lebanese source familiar with the central bank’s new measures said they were prompted by lots of evidence — both new material uncovered in the central bank’s records and other evidence made available from external investigators.
The source said the bank’s leadership suspected Salameh was aided in his scheme by other members of the institution.
Salameh was detained for nearly 13 months over the alleged financial crimes committed during his tenure, and was released last September after posting a record bail of more than $14 million.
He remains in Lebanon under a travel ban.

Tribal rally & maneuver in Al-Zahir District, Al-Bayda in support of Holy Qur’an & to enhance readiness
08 Jan 2026
The local authorities in Al-Zahir District of Al-Bayda Governorate organized on Thursday a tribal rally and a military maneuver for graduates of the open military training courses, held in support of the Holy Qur’an and in preparation for confronting what they described as the nation’s enemies.
Participants in the rally and maneuver — attended by Abdullah Aidrous, Al-Zahir Mobilization Official, along with local, military and social leaders — declared their high readiness to defend the Holy Qur’an , confront Israel, the United States, and their regional allies.
During the rally, participants chanted slogans condemning what they called American-Israeli insults to the Holy Qur’an, as well as Israel’s recognition of “Somaliland” as a separate entity, which they viewed as an attempt to destabilize the region.
The tribes of Al-Humaikan in Al-Zahir District conveyed a clear message to all opposing parties that the Yemeni people are fully prepared to counter any conspiracies targeting Yemen.
During the maneuver, participants showcased combat skills and tactics acquired through military training within the framework of general mobilization activities and preparations for future stages.
They reaffirmed their readiness to stand alongside the armed forces and to enhance preparedness in confronting adversaries, stressing their willingness to join the battlefronts in defense of land, honor, and sovereignty.
Participants further emphasized their full readiness to confront enemies and defend the sanctity of the Holy Qur’an, asserting that repeated American-Israeli insults to the Holy Book would not undermine its sacredness.
Al-Humaikan tribes reiterated that Yemen will remain a steadfast force capable of thwarting the conspiracies of what they described as global arrogant powers, regardless of their resources or capabilities.
Participants renewed their pledge to the leader , Sayyed Abdul-Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, affirming their commitment to continue under his leadership until achieving full victory, liberating occupied Palestinian territories, and breaking Western influence in the region.
They warned what they called the nation’s enemies that Yemeni resolve will not cease, noting that Yemenis remain at a high level of readiness in confronting the United States, Israel, and their allies, while maintaining a principled and humanitarian stance in support of Gaza and what they termed the “Promised Victory and Sacred Jihad.”
They also affirmed their adherence to the Islamic identity and their strong connection to the Holy Qur’an, expressing strong rejection of any form of insult to Islamic sanctities.

The TikTok creator who makes historical, fantasy-inspired cooking
Rahaf Jambi
January 08, 2026
RIYADH: Scrolling through TikTok, it is easy to get lost in endless food trends, from whipped coffee to rainbow bagels. Every so often, however, a creator appears who makes you pause, not just to watch, but to step into another world.
For Sultan_feasts, that world is a unique blend of history, fantasy, and the kitchen, where medieval recipes meet “Skyrim,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Witcher,” and even “Harry Potter.”
His videos are not merely about cooking, but are a full sensory experience, complete with atmospheric lighting, carefully chosen music, and occasionally, handmade historical instruments. Watching one of his clips feels less like scrolling through social media and more like stepping onto a set for a period drama — or into a game world brought to life.
He remembers the moment it all began vividly. Back in 2024, he purchased his very first video game cookbook for “World of Warcraft.”
At the time, it was just a curiosity, a way to bring his love for gaming into the kitchen. But as he flipped through the pages and began experimenting with recipes, something clicked. It was not just cooking. It was storytelling.
He was combining his two passions — history and food — in a way that felt entirely his own. “I enjoy history and learning about different cultures in general,” he told Arab News, “which is how this blend of medieval, historical, and fantasy fusion came in.” From that first cookbook, his collection grew, and so did his vision.
Soon, Sultan found himself immersed not only in historical recipes but also in the lore and cultures behind them, translating them into flavors and dishes that viewers could experience themselves.
One of his most popular ideas, the “potions,” came almost by accident. After fans repeatedly asked for more Witcher-inspired content, Sultan began experimenting with fresh juices, imagining them as magical elixirs. He would mix ingredients in ways that looked visually striking while testing flavors that might surprise the palate.
“Most of them are personal experimentations in my lab,” he said with a laugh. “I try to imagine how a blend of two tastes would end up. There are potions I recreate from cookbooks, but often I need to find alternatives so everyone can try them at home.”
The result is a vibrant mixture of honey, tea, spices, and fruit juices that seem to shimmer with alchemical energy on screen. For viewers, these potions are more than drinks; they are an invitation to play, to imagine, and to step into a world where food itself can be magical.
The magic, however, is not limited to the ingredients. Presentation is crucial, and Sultan treats his videos with the care of a filmmaker.
He has been passionate about videography since 2012 and has worked across new media, content creation, and presenting. “All the skills I’ve gathered over the years helped shape the content I make,” he said.
Cuts, color grading, sound design, and the right choice of music are all carefully considered, creating a mood that feels immersive rather than just instructional.
Each video is designed to transport viewers, whether they are watching him knead bread in candlelight or blend a potion with swirling colors reminiscent of a wizard’s lab.
Sometimes, he even adds music in a more literal sense, playing historical instruments while cooking. Many of these instruments are Scandinavian, dating back to the Viking age, and some he crafted himself. The haunting melodies he plays resonate with the recipes’ historical roots, enhancing the atmosphere. “The instrument helps vibrate that historical feel, belonging to the era of the dish I present,” he explained. Seeing him cook while playing a lute-like instrument or a small harp creates a sense that time has shifted, and viewers are sharing a table not in a modern kitchen but in a medieval hall or a fantastical inn.
Even beloved fictional worlds find their place in Sultan’s kitchen. Recipes inspired by “Harry Potter” emerged from a combination of nostalgia and curiosity, while “Skyrim” and other fantasy cookbooks provided frameworks for experimentation.
Not every dish turns out perfectly, and Sultan is transparent about what works and what does not. “Most of my picks turn out delicious, while some do not. Out of fairness, I always mention what worked and what didn’t, because nobody wants to cook and be disappointed,” he said. This honesty, combined with his creative flair, makes his content approachable and inspiring for both casual viewers and dedicated home cooks.
Sultan_feasts’ work is more than just TikTok videos. It is a portal, inviting viewers into a universe where history, fantasy, and culinary creativity meet. In a sea of repetitive food content, his creations stand out, offering not just recipes but experiences. The flicker of candlelight, the swirl of a potion, the strum of a medieval instrument — every detail is designed to immerse, engage, and entertain. And judging by his growing audience, people are eager not just to watch, but to taste and imagine themselves stepping into the worlds he brings to life.
For Sultan, the journey continues. New recipes, new potions, and new fantasy worlds are always on the horizon, each one an opportunity to combine his passions and transport viewers somewhere extraordinary. In his kitchen, history and imagination coexist, proving that food can be more than sustenance — it can be a story, an adventure, and a little bit of magic, all served on a plate.

Uzbekistan takes bold steps toward Islamic finance integration in banks
8 January 2026
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, January 8. Uzbekistan plans to introduce Islamic finance criteria and procedures in at least three commercial banks by 2030, Trend reports.
The initiative is detailed in the draft of the updated Uzbekistan-2030 Strategy, which has been made available for public consultation.
According to the document, the government plans to establish a comprehensive legal framework for Islamic finance and gradually introduce Sharia-compliant financial products into the national banking system.
As outlined in the roadmap, Islamic finance products are expected to be introduced in at least one commercial bank by 2027. Between 2029 and 2030, the number of banks offering such products is anticipated to increase to three. The financing of these initiatives will be sourced from the commercial banks themselves, with the Central Bank of Uzbekistan assigned as the coordinating authority.
Discussions regarding the development of Islamic banking and finance infrastructure in Uzbekistan have been underway since 2018. In June 2023, during an international forum in Tashkent, Bahrom Nomonov, Chairman of Apex Bank, highlighted that approximately 20% of Uzbekistan’s population avoids conventional lending products for religious reasons, underscoring a significant untapped demand for Islamic financial services.
Islamic banking constitutes a financial paradigm that operates in strict compliance with the tenets of Sharia jurisprudence. It underscores the principles of equitable profit and loss distribution, integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct in fiscal transactions.

Reform UK picks Muslim candidate Laila Cunningham to run for London mayor
08/01/2026
The anti-immigration Reform UK party on Wednesday named Muslim businesswoman Laila Cunningham as its candidate to run in London’s 2028 mayoral elections.
Reform leader Nigel Farage announced Cunningham, a former lawyer, as the party’s pick to contest the post held since 2016 by current mayor Sadiq Khan.
Khan, a Labour party politician who became the UK capital’s first Muslim mayor, has been fiercely criticised by the far-right over his policies, which often celebrate London’s diversity and large immigrant population. He has not announced if he intends to run for a fourth term in office.
Born to Egyptian immigrant parents, 48-year-old Cunningham is Reform’s first local councillor in London.
Cunningham would lead the party in an ambitious bid to win big in local elections in London in May, Farage said.
Reform could struggle to win over voters in the diverse, busy UK metropolis, despite growing popularity across other parts of the country.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Farage described Cunningham as “articulate … passionate” and “a mother”.
Elected in the central borough of Westminster in 2022 as a Conservative, Laila Cunningham defected to Reform last year.
Born in the capital to parents of Egyptian origin who arrived in the UK in the 1960s, she called London the “greatest city in the world”.
“But I am not blind to what it has become,” she added, vowing there would be a “new sheriff in town”.
Cunningham worked as a lawyer for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), but had to resign last year after making comments considered too politically partisan.
“People that come to London have to embrace British culture. You don’t come to London expecting London to change for you,” she said Wednesday.
She announced her priority would be to fight crime, arguing that London “is no longer safe” particularly for women, and attacking Khan’s policies.

Glasgow mosque extension recommended for approval despite objections
8th January
By Drew Sandelands
A Southside mosque’s plan to build an extension has been recommended for approval despite neighbours objecting over “dangerous” parking.
Planners at Glasgow City Council say an application from the Al-Farooq education and community centre on Dixon Avenue in Crosshill can be given the go ahead next week.
They claim a “respectful addition to the building” is proposed — and around 350 people have signed a petition supporting the project.
However, 20 objections have been received, mainly from residents living nearby, who are worried about the impact on the B-listed building as well as parking.
One resident said the area is “already under pressure” and “additional demand would worsen congestion and increase safety risks”.
But a council report states parking impacts “cannot be assessed” as the “use has existed for a significant period of time” and a change of use is not proposed.
The applicants want to create a single-storey extension to the front of the mosque, on the corner of Dixon Avenue and Langside Road, which was previously a church and an art gallery.
Plans state the building “does not always suit the needs” of its users, particularly ablution (cleansing) which is “a key part of entry into the prayer hall”.
“This extension would create a more accessible and visible point of entry and would position ablution at the beginning of any journey through the building,” they add.
The application also states the extension isn’t intended to increase footfall and is “seen as vital to the longer term sustainability” of the centre. No parking is proposed as visitors “rely on the ease of free parking… in the immediate vicinity”, public transport or a shuttle bus.
Bailie Elaine Gallagher, Greens, who represents Southside Central, objected to the application as she believes the “proposed work is incompatible with the architectural heritage” of the building and the Crosshill conservation area.
She added: “While it is laudable that the building’s current use is so successful… usage of the building has led to regular problems of double parking and blockage of traffic, as well as noise and anti-social behaviour.”
Another objector said: “Around busy times there is a lot of double parking up the whole of Langside Road and sometimes blocking the fire access paths. It makes it dangerous for pedestrians and for drivers.”
One resident added: “The proposed front extension will irreversibly damage the building’s original façade and architectural integrity.”
The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland said a modern extension “of such scale and style” across the principal façade would be “insensitive”.
The petition in favour of the plan states: “We the community residing in the area and those that attend here at Al-Farooq education and community centre support the new extension to the front of the building, which would facilitate a new accessible entrance and provide additional facilities necessary for the use of the building.
“The new development will be of the highest design and material quality which also respects and integrates with the existing historic environment.”
In a council report, planners state the proposed extension is “of high quality and respects the historic character of the church by retaining visibility of key architectural features and with limited attachment to the main building, ensuring reversibility”.
They add the site is “well served by public transport” and the extension will “support the regeneration of the area by investing in a valued community facility”.
Originally established as Hutchesontown Free Church, the building became Crosshill Victoria Free Church before it was converted to an art gallery and exhibition centre, known as Maxwell Studios, in 1971. It was purchased for its current use in 1998.

Grade II-listed London mansion with stunning music room modelled on Islamic palace the Alhambra goes on sale for £5million
8 January 2026
A 17th century mansion with an incredible 'music room' modelled on the Alhambra Islamic palace has hit the market for just under £5m.
The Grade II-listed home in leafy Hampton, south-west London, boasts five bedrooms and five bathrooms across four floors - but the dazzling interior is what sets this property apart.
A cinema room, wine room, dressing room, a double garage, and ample gardens including a conservatory and patio promise to cater to the owner's every need.
Most stunning, however, is the modestly-named music room that has been fitted in the style of the Alhambra - a palace complex in Granada, Spain, renowned as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture
It is richly decorated with golden walls and beams, mosaic tiles and stained-glass windows.
The dome ceiling features a brilliant display of colourful patterns, and a mezzanine adds further character still.
The real Alhambra is considered one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world.
Grove House is a stone's throw from Bushy Park and Hampton Pool - the year-round, open-air swimming spot.
Just across the park is also the historic Hampton Court Palace and stunning Waterhouse Woodlands Garden.
Estate agents House Partnership have listed the mansion for £4,995,000, and tout it as a fascinating property bursting with history.
Their description calls the house 'a most elegant Grade II listed home that displays a wonderful balance of modern day living with the charm and character that fills this 17th Century property'.
It goes on: 'The striking facade boasts beautifully regimented fenestration and a distinctive entrance porch featuring two stone eagles.
'Internally, this period integrity is also apparent throughout, with a number of notable features including panelled walls, several fireplaces and operational box window shutters, that are further complemented by the excellent natural light, magnificent room proportions and generous ceiling heights.
'Rooms of particular note include the stunning drawing room that overlooks the garden, the lovely bespoke kitchen, an impressive cinema room and the fabulous reception hallway with a most elegant turning oak staircase.
'But perhaps of most significance is the wonderfully ornate and richly decorated music room, built in the style of The Alhambra in Spain and added at the end of the 19th Century.
'The restoration has been carried out with much thought, sympathy to its period, and attention to detail, seamlessly combining period charm with modern technology such as CAT 6 wiring.
'Occupying a generous plot the house has a deep walled front garden, setting it well back from the road and providing extensive gated parking, in addition to the detached double garage, whilst to the rear of the property there is a beautifully landscaped garden that is mainly laid to lawn.'
Grove House, known as Brick House in 1669, was converted into offices in 1966, but has now been returned to its original role as a grand home.

MyLahore hosts famous cleric Maulana Tariq Jamil
8th January
One of the world’s most famous clerics was welcomed to the MyLahore restaurant in Blackburn during a visit to the town.
Maulana Tariq Jamil, 72, was in Blackburn to speak at the first Friday prayers taking place at the newly opened Masjid-E-Vali in Preston New Road.
More than 1,000 people turned out for prayers at the venue, which was opened by the Issa Foundation last week.
The building is the biggest and most expensive mosque project in the north west of England and took five years to complete.
Later, Maulana Tariq headed to the My Lahore restaurant with a handful of guests.
Shakoor Ahmed and Bilal Ahmed, from MyLahore, said: “It was a privilege to host the renowned scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil for a private dinner.
“He also led the Asr prayer in our prayer room for us all to read behind him, including the staff.”
Maulana Tariq is one of the most popular and famous clerics on the planet with millions of followers on social media.
He has delivered religious sermons internationally and has spoken widely about ‘ethnic and sectarian harmony’ between communities.
He regularly posts to his 5.6 million followers on Instagram and other social media forums, sharing his advice and updating people on his next appearances.
MyLahore is renowned for inviting some of the most famous religious clerics and sports personalities to its venues.
Last year, the restaurant hosted Pakistani cricketing legend Shahid Afridi and his son-in-law, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi.
The restaurant, based in the old Red Lion Hotel in Whitebirk Road, first opened its doors in 2022, keeping the historic features of the much-loved building intact while renovating it with a modern twist.
Its opening came almost 20 years after the first MyLahore was launched in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

One million spent hours without heat and water after Russian strikes, Ukraine says
09/01/2026
Chris Graham
More than one million people in south-eastern Ukraine spent hours without heating and water supplies as a result of Russian air strikes, officials have said.
The attacks damaged infrastructure across the south-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region - as well as in neighbouring Zaporizhzhia.
Russia has recently intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, aimed at paralysing power supplies during a harsh winter.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky accused it of "mockery" and pleaded for Western support. He later said there were fears of "a new massive Russian strike" as Moscow was trying to take advantage of the weather, with heavy snow and frost expected across Ukraine.
Hospitals, water facilities and other critical services in Dnipropetrovsk had to operate on backup systems, the energy ministry said, while residents were urged to limit electricity use to avoid further strain on the grid.
DTEK, Ukraine's biggest private energy provider, is living in permanent crisis mode because of Russian attacks on the grid, its chief executive told the BBC last month, with most of Ukraine suffering from lengthy power cuts during winter.
Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, which provides power for 5.6 million Ukrainians, said the intensity of strikes had been so frequent "we just don't have time to recover".
As the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion approaches, Timchenko said Russia had repeatedly targeted DTEK's energy grid with "waves of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles" and his company had found it difficult to cope.
"There is no military sense in such strikes on the energy sector, on infrastructure," Zelensky said on Thursday.
He urged Ukrainians to remain "resilient" against Russia's attempts "to break Ukraine" and added that peace talks aimed at ending the war should not be a reason to slow down Western supplies for Ukraine's air defences.
Zelensky has been on a diplomatic tour this week - meeting allies in the "Coalition of the Willing" and US President Donald Trump's peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Following those talks in Paris on Tuesday, the UK and France signed a declaration of intent on deploying troops in Ukraine if a peace deal is reached - a move Moscow warned would make foreign forces a "legitimate target".
But a day later, Zelensky said European allies had not given him sound guarantees that they would protect his country in the event of new Russian aggression.
However, he also said he believed Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine could be brought to an end in the first half of 2026.
Speaking at the opening of Cyprus's presidency of the EU for the next six months, he said negotiations with European partners and the US had entered a new stage and stressed that the EU should play a central role in any settlement.
President Donald Trump has been leading efforts to bring the war to an end. His proposals - amended by Ukraine and its European allies - envisage Ukrainian territorial concessions to Russia in areas it does not already control in the country's east.
Negotiations centre on those points - the last 10% of the deal, according to Zelensky. So far, Ukraine has refused to agree to cede territory to Russia.
Once agreed, those proposals would need Russia's approval.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown no sign of backing down for his demands to annex the entire territory of the industrial eastern region of Donbas.
His troops have been making slow progress in the past few months.

Spain's Catholic Church signs deal on sexual abuse compensation
09/01/2026
Guy Hedgecoe
Spain's Roman Catholic Church has reached an agreement with the government to compensate victims of sexual abuse by members of the clergy.
The accord follows complaints that religious leaders had failed to tackle the issue adequately.
It means the government will manage possible compensation in co-ordination with the Church, handling cases where other legal avenues are no longer available because the alleged crime took place too long ago or the individual accused has passed away.
Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards are estimated by the government to have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of Church figures. The move follows similar redress schemes in other nations where abuse has been uncovered.
"A democracy should not allow the existence of victims who have never been compensated [and] whose situation, on the contrary, had been covered up," said Justice Minister Félix Bolaños after signing the agreement.
He added that the agreement sought to "pay off an historic, moral debt that we had with victims of abuse within the Church".
The other signatories were Luis Argüello, president of the Episcopal Conference and leader of the Spanish Catholic Church, and Jesús Díaz Sariego, president of Confer, which represents Catholic congregations and religious orders.
Mr Sariego said the initiative was unprecedented as it tackled crimes that had gone past the statute of limitations.
Argüello, who is archbishop of Valladolid, described the accord as "another step forward along the path that for years we have been travelling".
A 2023 study by the Spanish ombudsman's office, which investigates public complaints, estimated that 1.1% of the population had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of members of the clergy or individuals linked to the Church - the equivalent of 440,000 people.
The Church has contested these findings.
It set up a reparation scheme that year to manage abuse claims.
However, both the Socialist-led government and victims' organisations have been dissatisfied with the scheme's model, which did not allow input or oversight from outside the Church.
In November, the Church said that 58 cases had been "resolved" under its framework.
However, critics accused the institution of a lack of transparency and slowness.
Newspaper El País, which has created a database of clerical abuse allegations, has documented cases affecting 2,948 victims dating back as far as the 1940s.
Last June, several victims' groups broke off ties with the Spanish Church, alleging that it had excluded them from seeking reparations.
The Vatican subsequently appeared to take a more prominent role, with the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors meeting Spanish victims and urging the country's Catholic leaders to bolster and facilitate reparations.
Meetings between Justice Minister Bolaños and the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, appear to have raised the pressure further on the Church authorities in Madrid.
Under the new system, victims will be able to file their cases before a new agency created by the justice ministry, which will then take them before the ombusdman's office, which will draw up a reparation proposal.
The Church must then agree to the proposed compensation – if not, the case will be referred back to the ombudsman.
Reparation can be symbolic, psychological, or economic, according to the agreement. In each case, the Church is responsible for its execution.
The amount of financial compensation that could be paid out is not specified.
However, the ombudsman has suggested following the lead of other European countries.
In Belgium, an average of €6,000 ($7,000; £5,210) has been paid to victims in such cases, although the late Pope Francis described that amount as "too small".
Ireland's redress board paid out an average of around €63,000 to victims.
Sexual abuse by members of the clergy first received significant attention in the US and Canada in the 1980s.
In the 1990s, the issue began to grow, with stories emerging in Argentina, Australia and revelations of widespread historical abuse in Ireland.
By the early 2000s, sexual abuse within the Church was a major global story.
Spain, a Catholic country, was affected by relatively few scandals in that time.
However, investigations by the media have brought the issue to light more recently.
In the most recent high-profile case, the bishop of Cádiz, Rafael Zornoza, resigned in November, following an accusation of abuse dating back to the 1990s.
Victims' organisations have welcomed the new agreement in Spain.
"This is an endemic, structural evil which has been within the Church and which it should have tackled a long time ago instead of covering up paedophiles," said Juan Cuatrecasas, of the Association for Stolen Childhood (Anir), who said he was "fully satisfied".

Ukrainian strikes have left 550,000 without power in western Russia – governor
9 Jan, 2026
Ukrainian strikes have caused massive power outages in Russia’s western region of Belgorod.
Belgorod, a city of 330,000 people, has frequently been targeted by Ukrainian drones and rockets since the armed conflict between Moscow and Kiev began in 2022.
The regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said Friday that an overnight missile strike had caused “serious damage” to an unspecified infrastructure site. He added that there were no casualties and that first responders were at the scene.
Gladkov later said in a video message on his Telegram channel that as of 6am local time, outages were affecting 556,000 people across six municipalities. He added that around 2,000 apartment buildings had lost heating and nearly 200,000 people were without running water in their homes.
Belgorod’s temperature on Friday morning was around 2 °C (36 °F) and is expected to drop to −5 °C (23 °F) over the weekend.
Telegram news channels reported that air raid sirens were activated, followed shortly by a loud explosion. According to reports, a power plant may have been hit.
Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of striking civilian targets, including with weapons supplied by the West.
On the same night, Ukrainian officials reported drone strikes and blackouts in Kiev.
The Russian Defense Ministry has previously said that Moscow targets parts of the grid used to power Ukraine’s weapons manufacturing industry.

EU mulling response to Trump’s Greenland threat
8 Jan, 2026
The EU has discussed a potential European response if the US follows through on its threat to acquire Greenland, foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said.
US President Donald Trump restated his long-held interest in taking over the autonomous Danish territory shortly after Washington attacked Venezuela last weekend. Copenhagen has said Trump must be taken “seriously when he says he wants Greenland.”
Trump and his administration have been discussing a potential bid to purchase the Arctic island, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, EU foreign policy chief Kallas said “the messages that we hear regarding Greenland are extremely concerning.” She added that European leaders have discussed “if this is a real threat, and if it is, what would be our response.”
While the top diplomat did not elaborate, European policymakers are reportedly considering four main response options to deter potential US action, according to Politico. The first is reaching a compromise where the US gets a symbolic security “win” while Denmark and Greenland preserve their sovereignty. The second is to increase funding for Greenland, making independence under Europe more attractive than a deal with the US. The third is economic retaliation, and the fourth is deploying troops as a deterrent.
On Wednesday, a group of six EU leaders plus the UK issued a joint statement defending Greenland’s status as part of Denmark. The document carefully avoids condemning the US ambition to acquire the territory, instead referring to Washington as an “essential partner” and calling on it to uphold UN principles such as sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The fact that only six out of 27 EU countries signed the statement has led critics to describe the bloc as looking divided and weak on the global stage, unwilling to risk antagonizing the US.

Ken Paxton to Newsmax: Texas Won't Tolerate Sharia Law
By Newsmax Wires
08 January 2026
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told Newsmax on Thursday that although his state fully protects religious freedom, it will not allow communities to operate under Sharia law or any legal system that conflicts with state and federal law.
Paxton, a Republican, told "Carl Higbie FRONTLINE" the issue is not Islam as a religion but attempts to establish communities governed by laws outside the U.S. Constitution.
"So, in our state, I mean, we certainly are First Amendment. We believe in free speech, free exercise of religion," Paxton said. "However, if you're going to establish a community that's based on Sharia law, not the laws of the state, not the laws of our country, not the Constitution, well, that's where we have a problem."
Paxton emphasized that private religious beliefs and practices are constitutionally protected, but legal systems derived from religious doctrine are not.
"We have no problem with people expressing their religious views and having their own private religious ceremonies, all good, protected under the First Amendment," he said. "But the Sharia law part of this is the problem."
Paxton said such efforts are often mischaracterized as religious discrimination.
"And that's the thing that a lot of times they'll distance themselves from and say, 'Oh, this is all about religion,' when in reality, it's about following laws that are not our laws," he said.
Paxton's comments come as his office has taken legal action against the East Plano Islamic Center, alleging it engaged in an illegal land development scheme tied to plans for a large residential project. According to Paxton's office, the development failed to comply with zoning, permitting, and infrastructure requirements under Texas law.
Paxton has argued that the case is about enforcing land-use laws and preventing the creation of enclaves that operate outside established legal frameworks, not about restricting religious worship.
Paxton has repeatedly said Texas will defend religious liberty while also enforcing the Constitution and state law without exception.

CAIR-SFBA Welcomes Stay Away Orders, GPS Monitoring in Sunnyvale Attack on Pro-Palestine Demonstrators
January 8, 2026
The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR–SFBA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed criminal protective (stay away) orders issued by the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, against defendant Joshua Krupia following his violent attack on Pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Sunnyvale.
CAIR-SFBA has been assisting the demonstrators as they pursue accountability following the attack on the evening of Nov. 7, 2025. According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, Krupia was arrested after physically assaulting the demonstrators and cutting down Palestinian flags hanging from a Highway 101 overcrossing.
Amid community concern about rising hate incidents targeting Muslims and allies in the Sunnyvale area, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed Krupia is being charged with battery and assault with a deadly weapon.
During Krupia’s arraignment hearing on Jan. 7, Judge Thomas Kuhnle issued criminal protective orders requiring Krupia to stay 100 yards away from the targeted demonstrators and wear a GPS ankle monitor. The next hearing is scheduled for March 11, 2026, at 9 a.m.
In a statement, CAIR-SFBA Civil Rights Attorney Bismah Jaffer said:
“We are alarmed by the steady rise in hate incidents targeting Pro-Palestinian demonstrators across the Bay Area. This is one of many cases reported to CAIR-SFBA, and we welcome the court’s decision to prioritize the safety of the targeted community members through these protective orders. Measures like these send a clear message that violence and intimidation motivated by bias will be taken seriously by our justice system.”
CAIR-SFBA encourages community members to take the following steps if they witness or experience a bias incident:
Stay alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially near houses of worship and community centers.
Document the incident: If safe, record details and gather witness accounts, photos, or video.
Report to law enforcement: Request that the incident be investigated and documented as a hate crime if appropriate.
CAIR-SFBA reiterates its commitment to combating bigotry, racism and hate in all forms and encourages anyone experiencing acts of aggression, racism or Islamophobia to contact its Civil Rights Department at 408.986.9874 or visit bit.ly/cairsfba-report-hate.
CAIR-SFBA is an office of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

CAIR-FL Welcomes Arrest of Man who Allegedly Posted Death Threats Targeting Muslims on YouTube
January 8, 2026
The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of a North Fort Myers man who allegedly posted death threats on YouTube targeting Muslims.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said it was notified by the FBI on Jan. 2 about online comments that included violent threats against a religious group. The posts, which included statements calling for violence against Muslims and references to killing and shooting them, were reportedly traced to a 55-year-old North Fort Myers man. The man was arrested and later expressed remorse for the comments. Authorities said a thorough investigation was conducted and no specific attack plan or imminent threat was identified.
In a statement, CAIR-FL Communications Director Wilfredo Ruiz said:
“We welcome the swift action taken by law enforcement authorities as soon as a potential threat was detected. As anti-Muslim bigotry continues to be pushed and promoted by prominent public figures and politics and media and privileged by social media algorithms, the risk of violence increases. Every possible threat must be taken seriously.”
Last year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report, Unconstitutional Crackdowns, which reveals that Islamophobia remains at record-high levels nationwide.

Trump backs congressional Russia sanctions bill
9 Jan, 2026
US President Donald Trump has said he supports a bipartisan bill in Congress that would authorize him to impose sweeping sanctions on Russia’s trade partners.
Trump made the remarks after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the president had “greenlit” legislation that would allow tariffs of up to 500% on countries that buy Russian oil and gas. Graham introduced the bill last year alongside Democrat Richard Blumenthal.
“I support it. I hope we don’t have to use it,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in an interview aired Thursday. “You know, we have big sanctions on Russia right now. Russia’s economy is very bad, but they are much bigger than Ukraine,” he added.
Trump has expressed frustration that his attempts to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine over the past year have been unsuccessful, at times blaming both countries.
In November, he proposed a roadmap for peace that Ukraine and its European backers rejected as favoring Russia, while accusing Moscow of stalling talks.
Russia, in turn, accused Ukraine and the EU of making unrealistic demands and sabotaging the prospects of a deal.
In October, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on two of Russia’s largest energy companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.
Earlier this week, the US Coast Guard seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic for allegedly evading sanctions, prompting Moscow to call the operation illegal under international maritime law.
Russia has long maintained that the primary objective of Western sanctions is to eliminate economic competition and limit the development of individual states rather than help Ukraine.
“Their aim is obvious: to cling to their diminishing domination and rob [other] countries of the right to make independent political decisions,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said last month.

US undermining ‘world order’ – German president
8 Jan, 2026
The flouting of international norms by the US is making the world more dangerous, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said.
His remarks came after US President Donald Trump ordered a commando raid into Caracas to abduct his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro, and renewed plans to obtain Greenland from Denmark.
“There is the breakdown of values by our most important partner, the USA, which helped build this world order,” Steinmeier said on Wednesday during a symposium at the Koerber Foundation held in honor of his 70th birthday, as cited by Reuters.
He urged efforts to prevent “the world from turning into a den of robbers, where the most unscrupulous take whatever they want, where regions or entire countries are treated as the property of a few great powers.”
“Attempts are being made to push even medium-sized states – and that includes us – to the margins of history, while small and weaker states are left completely unprotected,” Steinmeier added.
French President Emmanuel Macron also warned about the “risks to the international order in which we live.”
“The United States is an established power, but one that is gradually turning away from some of its allies and breaking free from international rules it was still promoting until recently, whether in trade, certain aspects of security, or various international forums,” Macron told the French diplomatic corps in Paris on Thursday. He earlier said that he did not approve “the method” Washington had used to oust Maduro.
Trump told The New York Times in an interview published on Thursday that he did not “need international law,” and that he was relying on his own judgment instead. “My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me,” he said.
The US framed its military action in Venezuela as a police operation to capture Maduro, whom Trump has accused of drug trafficking.
Maduro pleaded not guilty when he was brought before a New York judge on Monday, describing himself as “a prisoner of war.” Venezuela has condemned the US raid as a blatant violation of its sovereignty.

Oklahoma attorney general investigates proposed Broken Arrow mosque
Jan. 9, 2026
By Cole Brumbelow
OKLAHOMA CITY (KSWO) — Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has launched an investigation into a proposed mosque in Broken Arrow.
The attorney general said the investigation seeks to ensure the proposal aligns with Oklahoma law and federal statutes.
Drummond said the review is prompted by “substantial public concern,” including questions about the “ownership structure, governance and financing of the project.”
Drummond said the funding sources for the initiative will be investigated. He said the land for the project is owned by North American Islamic Trust, which Drummond said is reportedly tied to the “radical Muslim Brotherhood.”
In response to the investigation, the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights advocacy organization, called the move a “witch hunt.”
In a statement, CAIR-OK said there are no allegations of unlawful conduct by mosque officials or organizers to prompt an investigation.
The project has received approval for a conditional use permit from the Broken Arrow Planning Commission. The Broken Arrow City Council is scheduled to vote on the project Jan. 12.

‘It’s my fault’: Is ICE shooting victim Renee Nicole Good’s partner responsible for her death — here’s what we know
Jan 9, 2026
Grief spilled onto the pavement in south Minneapolis moments after gunfire shattered a quiet street. Rebecca Good, 40, the widow of Renee Nicole Good, was filmed sobbing, “it’s my fault” after her partner was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, The New York Post reported.
Rebecca Good was outside the car when Renee drove at an ICE officer, who opened fire on Wednesday, hitting the mother of three in the head and killing her.
In the aftermath of the shooting, footage showed Good’s wife slumped on the ground with her dog beside her crying.
“I made her come down here, it’s my fault,” the woman said.
“They just shot my wife.”
It remained unknown whether Renee Good and her partner were residents of the neighbourhood where ICE was conducting an operation at the time of the shooting.
A video taken by a bystander from outside his house showed him asking the widow if there was anyone he could call for her.
“I have a six-year-old at school... we're new here, we don't have anyone,” she said in response.
The couple appeared to have a small business, B. Good Handwork, with images from the company’s social media showing them handling projects together.
Rebecca Good and her wife recently moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri.

Two starkly opposed Americas laid bare by deadly ICE shooting
Anthony Zurcher
Jan 9, 2026
The fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis by a federal law-enforcement officer is laying bare the sharp divides in US politics – and threatening to inflame an already contentious debate over immigration policy.
The incident took place in broad daylight. There are multiple videos taken by bystanders from various locations. And yet even the basic facts are being disputed.
Almost immediately after the shooting, two starkly different accounts began to take shape. Any ambiguities in the videos shared online were seized upon - different angles and different screengrabs were used to push a particular narrative.
And on the public stage, state and federal officials openly disagreed.
According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the driver – 37-year-old Renee Good – was to blame. As she drove away from ICE officers, she "weaponised her car" in a "domestic terror attack", Noem said.
US President Donald Trump blamed a "professional agitator" and a "radical left movement of violence and hate" in a Truth Social post.
National Democrats - and state and local officials in Minnesota - have painted a completely different picture.
Jacob Frey, the Democratic Mayor of Minneapolis, said a federal agent "recklessly" used lethal force. He also issued an expletive-laced demand for immigration enforcement officials to leave the city.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the shooting "totally predictable" and "totally avoidable", arguing it was a direct consequence of the surge in federal immigration officers into Minneapolis and surrounding areas in recent days.
"We have been warning for weeks that the Trump administration's dangerous, sensationalised operations are a threat to our public safety," he said on Wednesday.
This clear division between the federal government and local officials was only further illustrated on Thursday morning, when the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announced that the justice department and the FBI were no longer co-operating with its investigation into the shooting.
Federal agencies, it said, would be solely responsible for handling the investigation into the use of lethal force by the ICE agent.
That Minnesota has become the epicentre of a growing conflict over immigration enforcement in recent months is both unsurprising - and ironic.
It is ironic because Good's death occurred just a few miles from where, in 2020, Minneapolis police killed George Floyd during an attempted arrest, setting off nationwide Black Lives Matters protests – including some, in Minneapolis, that turned violent.
Walz has put the state's National Guard on standby, and cautioned the hundreds of protesters who have taken to the streets not to resort to violence.
Minnesota's central role in this latest flare-up is unsurprising because it marks the culmination of conflict, controversy and scandal that had been building for months.
The recent surge in immigration enforcement comes after Trump derided the state's large Somali immigrant population - most of whom are US citizens - after members of the community were convicted of widespread fraud in the distribution of federal Covid aid.
"Hundreds of thousands of Somalians are ripping off our country, and ripping apart that once great state," he said in November. "We're not going to put up with these kind of assaults on law and order by people who shouldn't even be in our country."
Under pressure, Walz abandoned his bid for re-election last week, as allegations mounted of corruption in state social services, including childcare and food aid.
The surge in immigration enforcement in the state is just the latest example of the Trump administration using federal officials to target communities suspected of having high rates of undocumented migrants. The use of force during this operation is far from an isolated incident, either.
The Minnesota incident was at least the ninth immigration-enforcement-related shooting since September – all involving individuals who were targeted while in their vehicles - according to the New York Times.
The intensity with which the immigration actions have been undertaken – in an expanding list of cities across the US – has led to protests and calls from Democratic officials for greater oversight, accountability and restraint among law enforcement agents.
The fatal Minneapolis shooting has already given these efforts new urgency among their advocates.
Trump administration officials, for their part, are pressing ahead – citing the mandate they say they received from voters in the 2024 presidential election as well as the evidence, in dramatically reduced undocumented entries into the US, that their efforts have proven effective.
They have also vigorously disputed the argument that the video of the Minneapolis shooting is evidence of a misuse of lethal force.
"The gaslighting is off the charts and I'm having none of it," Vice-President JD Vance wrote in a post on X. "This guy was doing his job. She tried to stop him from doing his job."
While he said the incident was tragic, he added that "it falls on this woman and all of the radicals who teach people that immigration is the one type of law that rioters are allowed to interfere with".
Walz, in his next public comments, was quick to counter.
"People in positions of power have already passed judgement, from the president to the vice-president to Kristi Noem, have stood and told you things that are verifiably false, verifiably inaccurate," he said. "They have determined the character of a 37-year-old mom that they didn't even know."
It appears that even video evidence is open to interpretation at this point. Each person sees the same images and draws decidedly different conclusions – ones that frequently, perhaps not surprisingly, reinforce their previously established positions.
The chasm in US politics seems as immutable as it is daunting.

Terrorism: NAF Meets US Govt, Bell Textron To Fast-Track Delivery Of Attack Helicopters
January 8, 2026
By Richard Ogunsile
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to fast-track the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, as top NAF officers held high-level talks with senior United States Government officials and representatives of Messrs Bell Textron.
Naija News reports that the engagement took place during a Programme Management Review meeting led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, from January 5 to 6, 2026, in San Diego, California, United States.
A statement issued on Thursday, January 8, by the NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the meeting was aimed at reviewing the current status of the helicopter acquisition programme and identifying measures to ensure the timely delivery of the platforms.
According to Ejodame, Air Marshal Aneke said the review was designed to strengthen programme oversight, accountability, and strict adherence to agreed timelines and budget.
“In a strategic move to enhance the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led a Programme Management Review meeting with senior United States Government officials and representatives of Messrs Bell Textron from 5 to 6 January 2026 in San Diego, California, USA,” the statement read.
“The engagement focused on fast-tracking the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, a critical capability enhancement aligned with the CAS’s Command Philosophy of building and sustaining a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower effects in synergy with surface forces for the attainment of national security objectives.”
Aneke expressed appreciation to the United States Government and Bell Textron for their continued cooperation, professionalism, and transparency in the execution of the programme.
He said the structured review underscored the NAF’s deliberate emphasis on discipline, accountability, and results.
“We deeply value the professionalism and openness demonstrated throughout this process, and we remain fully committed to working closely with our partners to ensure the timely and successful delivery of these platforms,” the CAS said.
The Air Chief noted that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters goes beyond a routine platform upgrade, describing it as a symbol of the enduring defence relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
According to him, the programme reflects a shared responsibility for regional and global security, anchored on mutual trust, shared values, and a common vision for peace and stability.
“This partnership speaks to our collective resolve to confront evolving security challenges through collaboration and sustained capability development,” Aneke added.
Reaffirming the NAF’s sense of urgency, the CAS assured the US team that his administration would take all necessary steps to ensure the helicopters are delivered in the shortest possible time.
He also charged the programme management team to work proactively to ensure production is completed on schedule and within budget.
“Timelines and standards must be met concurrently. We must remain focused, innovative, and solutions-driven,” he stressed.
Tinubu’s Support Acknowledged
Aneke expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his unwavering support of the Nigerian Air Force.
He said the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters would significantly boost the NAF’s combat capability, operational efficiency, and mission readiness, enhancing its ability to deliver decisive airpower in support of national security and stability.
The CAS added that the advanced capabilities of the helicopters would enable the NAF to carry out highly precise operations, reduce collateral damage, and provide timely support to ground troops.
According to him, this would help save lives and protect property in communities affected by terrorism and other criminal activities.
He further reassured Nigerians of the Air Force’s commitment to tackling terrorist and criminal threats with professionalism, restraint, and accountability, while sustaining public trust and confidence.
Naija News reports that Nigeria’s request to purchase 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters was approved by the United States Government in April 2022, when the U.S. State Department, through the Defence Security Cooperation Agency, cleared a possible Foreign Military Sale of the aircraft and related equipment.
According to Military Africa, the formal production and delivery contract for the helicopters, valued at $455 million, was awarded to Bell Textron by the U.S. Department of Defence on March 12, 2024.

Buratai Sues Retired General For ₦1 Billion Over Terrorism Allegations
January 8, 2026
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Yusufu Buratai (retd.), has dragged a fellow retired senior military officer, Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi, before the Kaduna State High Court, seeking ₦1 billion damages over alleged defamatory statements linking him to terrorism.
The suit, filed on January 8, 2026, at the Kaduna Judicial Division of the High Court, borders on allegations that Ali‑Keffi made and circulated false and malicious statements accusing Buratai of terrorism financing, association with Boko Haram suspects, and the alleged illegal release and concealment of terror suspects.
In the writ of summons and statement of claim filed by his counsel, A.I. Aliyu and A.M. Hassan of Law Plus Consult, Buratai asked the court to declare that the statements credited to the defendant and published on several online platforms, including Sahara Reporters and other news and social media outlets — are libellous and injurious to his reputation.
According to court documents, Buratai alleged that Ali‑Keffi granted interviews in 2025 in which he insinuated that the former army chief had links with terror suspects and financiers, and was involved in conspiracies to cover up terrorism‑related activities during his tenure.
He noted that the publications were widely circulated across Facebook, 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp and Instagram, giving the allegations national and international reach.
The former army chief maintained that the allegations were entirely false, stressing that he had never been investigated, indicted or convicted for terrorism, terrorism financing or any related offence.
He argued that the publications portrayed him as corrupt, unpatriotic and complicit in acts inimical to Nigeria’s national security, thereby gravely damaging his honour and standing both locally and internationally.
Buratai further accused Ali‑Keffi of acting recklessly and maliciously, despite allegedly admitting in the same publications that no investigation had established Buratai’s involvement in terrorism financing.
Consequently, Buratai is asking the court to compel the defendant to immediately retract the alleged defamatory statements and publish an unreserved public apology with equal prominence in Sahara Reporters, at least two national newspapers, and on all social media platforms where the statements were circulated.
He is also claiming ₦1bn as general damages for libel, citing the gravity of terrorism‑related allegations, their wide dissemination, and the defendant’s status as a retired senior military officer.
Additionally, the former army chief is seeking a perpetual injunction restraining Ali‑Keffi from further publishing or repeating the alleged defamatory statements, alongside an order awarding the full cost of the suit, including solicitor’s fees.
The writ of summons directs the defendant to enter an appearance within 21 days of service, failing which the court may proceed to hear the matter in his absence.
As of the time of filing this report, no date had been fixed for the commencement of the hearing, and the defendant had yet to file a response to the suit.

The Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Sheikh Muhammad Hadi-Balarabe, made the disclosure at a news briefing in Katsina.
Hadi-Balarabe explained that the Maulud was organised by the national body of “Majma’u Ahbab Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass”, with the theme: “Life of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, His Works and Contributions to Islam”.
He said that the event, scheduled to hold on Jan. 17, would host about 4million people across 15 countries from the West and North Africa.
Hadi-Balarabe said: “This will be the third time Katsina is hosting the National Maulud of the revered Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass.”
According to him, it was first hosted in 2002, 2016 and currently in 2026, adding that the event is mainly organised to remember the contributions made by the scholar when he was alive.
The chairman, who recalled that Sheikh Nyass was born in 1900 in Senegal, died in 1975, after making immense contributions to the progress of the Islamic religion in the world.
He revealed that Sheikh Nyass loved the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), and adhered to his teachings, “that is why followers of Tijaniyya loved him so much.
“Historically, for the past two decades, we don’t know any scholar who has contributed more than Sheikh Nyass.
“In 2016, about 3million people attended the Maulud here in Katsina, we are predicting that the number will now reach over 4million.”
Hadi-Balarabe revealed that activities marking the event would start one week to the date.

Former Enugu Governor Warns Against Hidden Agenda In New Tax Law
January 9, 2026
By Richard Ogunsile
Former Governor of Enugu State and elder statesman, Okwesilieze Nwodo, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently investigate alleged alterations to the recently passed tax law, describing the discrepancies between the version approved by the National Assembly and what was ultimately gazetted as “deeply troubling.”
Naija News reports that Nwodo, who also served as National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warned that such irregularities could undermine public trust and democratic accountability, urging the president to ensure full transparency in the process.
Nwodo told ThisDay that the issue was a major concern for the PDP.
He stressed that Nigerians had engaged robustly with the executive before the tax law was passed, adding that the principle of taxation was essential for national survival.
“Every adult Nigerian who is eligible to pay tax ought to do so for the country to survive. Nobody is against renewing tax laws to make the system more efficient,” he said.
However, the elder statesman expressed fears of a possible hidden agenda, which he said now appeared to be unfolding in public.
Law Passed by Parliament, But Gazetted Differently
Nwodo described it as “totally embarrassing” for members of the National Assembly to claim that the law they passed was not what was ultimately gazetted.
“A government that is working for the people should be asking critical questions, such as: who sent this piece of legislation to the press for printing? Where did the copy sent to the press come from?” he asked.
He called for a transparent investigation, insisting that the country must be informed that the president and the presidency were not responsible for the discrepancies.
The elder statesman argued that those responsible for the alteration of the law should be identified and brought to justice, while the president should apologise to Nigerians and ensure that the National Assembly submits a fresh copy of the bill for assent and gazetting.
“It is unacceptable for parliament to simply say that discrepancies have been noticed and will be corrected. You cannot do this in a country of intelligent people. You are not dealing with toddlers in a kindergarten,” he said.
Nwodo emphasised that transparency is essential, stating that while Nigerians are expected to comply with tax laws, the government had failed to carry the people along or inspire confidence in the process.
“As a result, we are filled with doubts and confusion. How do you expect compliance?” he asked.
He also questioned the urgency of the law’s implementation, asking: “What is so magical about the law starting on the first of January?”
He argued that proper implementation, done with credibility, would yield higher compliance rates, rather than rushing it.
The elder statesman concluded by reminding the government of the people’s role in governance.
“We own this country. Our constitution begins with ‘We the people’. Power resides with the people, not the leader. Leaders are elected every four years, with a maximum of eight years in office, but the people remain,” he said.
Naija News reports that Nwodo’s comments come amid growing concerns about trust and transparency in the government’s tax reform agenda, highlighting the need for accountability in Nigeria’s legislative processes.

Details Emerge On Reason Dangote Withdrew Petition Against Ex-NMDPRA Boss
January 9, 2026
New facts have emerged regarding the reason billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote withdrew his petition against the former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.
Sources who spoke to Leadership disclosed that Dangote withdrew the petition due to concerns that the presence of Ahmed’s spouse as a key staff member of the Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) could impact the investigation.
According to the source, fear of possible interference may have been the reason for the withdrawal.
“What we understand is that after the petition was filed, it came to light that Ahmed’s spouse holds a key position in ICPC. Although no one is sure how that might play out, there are concerns of interference,” a source said.
The Principal Partner of an Abuja-based law firm, O’J Law Consult, Lilian Ojimma, told the aforementioned publication that a petitioner is free to withdraw his petition from a prosecuting agency and go to another agency, if he so wishes.
“The only thing,” she said, “is that the petitioner cannot file the same petition in two agencies at the same time and pursue them simultaneously.”
However, the ICPC has assured that no one can interfere in the ongoing investigation into Dangote’s petition.
ICPC spokesperson, John Odey, said, “I am not aware of any person working in the ICPC who is married to Farouk. Even if it is true, I can assure you that nobody will interfere in the ongoing investigation. Dangote’s withdrawal of the petition does not mean that the ICPC has stopped the investigation. Investigation continues.”

Tinubu Administration Allocates ₦7 Billion For Solarisation Of Aso Rock Villa
January 9, 2026
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
The President Bola Tinubu-led administration has allocated another ₦7 billion for the solarisation of the Presidential Villa, following a similar initiative in 2025.
According to Sahara Reporters, the amount earmarked under the State House expenditures for the 2026 fiscal year is meant to fund the installation of a solar mini-grid for the Villa, which houses the President and top government officials.
The ₦7 billion allocation is listed under the “provision of solarisation of Villa with solar mini-grid” in the recently published Budget Office of the Federation documents.
This marks a continuation of the government’s investment in renewable energy for Aso Rock, after a N10 billion allocation for the same purpose in 2025.
This development comes despite ongoing power challenges faced by the general population in Nigeria, where persistent power failures have triggered widespread criticism of the nation’s energy infrastructure.
The project has faced public backlash, particularly after the ₦10 billion budget in 2025 sparked outrage. Critics questioned the timing of such an expenditure, given the country’s economic difficulties and the ongoing energy crisis affecting millions of Nigerians.
There were also concerns that the initiative reflected the administration’s failure to address the broader issue of stable electricity for the public.
In response to the criticism, the Presidency defended the project, with Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, explaining that the solarisation of Aso Rock was part of a long-term investment in sustainability and energy efficiency.
“The White House in Washington D.C. uses solar power. We are not reinventing the wheel. We are following a tested and globally accepted model for powering important national institutions sustainably,” Onanuga said, positioning the project within international standards for presidential residences.
Power Crisis Across Nigeria
This move to solar energy for the Presidential Villa comes amidst severe power shortages in the country. In April 2025, Nigeria’s national grid experienced a major collapse, leaving most parts of the country without power.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed a sharp decline in electricity generation, plummeting from over 2,000 MW to just 139.92 MW within an hour, resulting in nationwide outages.
In September 2025, the grid collapsed again, causing power outages across the country, including in major cities such as Lagos. These incidents have underscored the fragility of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with a single grid disturbance often leading to widespread blackouts.
Despite efforts to boost power generation, Nigeria continues to struggle with inconsistent electricity supply. As recently as March 2025, the national grid collapsed again after a brief surge in power generation to 6,000 MW. This celebration of a “historic rise” in electricity generation quickly turned to disappointment when power output dropped sharply below 1,000 MW.
The incident highlighted the ongoing challenges in the country’s energy sector, with citizens demanding reliable electricity for their homes and businesses, as well as critical services.

Fubara’s Defection To APC A Threat To Wike – Former Rivers Commissioner
January 9, 2026
Austin Tam-George has suggested that the defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reshaped the political landscape in Rivers State, diminishing the influence of the camp loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Appearing on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Tam-George, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, noted that in the last three weeks, the political dynamics in the state had shifted dramatically.
He pointed out that the defection seemed to have unsettled Wike and his allies, leading to increased political activity by the FCT Minister.
According to Tam-George, Wike had embarked on a series of visits to local government areas, which he argued was an attempt to reassert influence in light of Fubara’s defection.
He claimed that Wike’s camp had previously enjoyed significant leverage over the state government, but with Fubara’s switch to the APC, that influence was severely diminished.
While emphasizing the growing tension, Tam-George expressed concern about the long-term impact of the rivalry between Wike and Fubara.
He warned that the ongoing instability in the state could ultimately harm Rivers State and its people.
Furthermore, Tam-George cited Wike’s recent rhetoric, which included accusations against senior APC leaders and the Tinubu administration, suggesting they had accepted bribes from the Rivers State government.
He argued that these actions were a reflection of the heightened political friction in the state following Fubara’s defection.
Tam-George warned that the instability created by this political rivalry could detract from the state’s development and wellbeing, ultimately leaving Rivers State as the biggest loser in the dispute.
Tam-George said: “The movement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to APC in the last 21 days has changed the political calculation in Rivers State.
“You know, in the past two weeks or so, the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has been going from local government area to another local government area, threatening the government of Rivers state, even insulting the leadership structures of the APC at some point.
“He even accused some senior leaders and the Tinubu administration of going to Rivers State to literally accept, take money or bribes, also from the Rivers state government.
“So what I think is happening is that the defection of the governor has obviously threatened the original leverage that the Wike’s camp had over the governor, and they are finding a way to look for a way of asserting what they thought might be a threat to their leverage.
“But the regret is that it is the state ultimately that suffers from this kind of instability.”

‘Tinubu Was Insulted’ – Rivers Assembly Rejects Political Solution For Fubara
January 9, 2026
The spokesperson for the Rivers State House of Assembly, Enemi George, has reiterated that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odu will continue, dismissing suggestions for a political solution.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, George clarified that the ongoing process was based on legal grounds and not political maneuvering.
He expressed doubt about claims that the impeachment was politically motivated, stating, “We’ve had one too many political solutions… It demeans, diminishes the institution of the Rivers House of Assembly if you say that everything that we do is because of politics… Right now, what we’re talking about is the law.”
On the governor’s repeated misconduct, George accused Fubara of being a “recidivist,” explaining that this term refers to someone who continuously commits the same crimes and is either punished or forgiven, only to repeat the same actions.
He cited instances of alleged mismanagement of public funds and questioned Fubara’s appointments of relatives to positions without proper screening.
George also addressed the controversy regarding a N100,000 “Christmas gift” allegedly transferred to lawmakers’ accounts on the governor’s orders, saying that it was rejected not because of the amount, but due to concerns about the legality of the funds.
He added, “These funds do not belong to my father, mother, or sister; they belong to the people of Rivers State, in the nooks and crannies, who will pay for it.”
Further, George stressed that political interventions from party leaders would not override the Assembly’s legal authority.
He referenced previous interventions by President Bola Tinubu, saying that the president’s efforts to broker peace had been undermined when agreements were violated.
“The first time the president intervened, he was insulted. They said it was a political solution that was not binding. The second time, the president went through hell to assemble stakeholders, to broker this peace, and then somebody goes back and reneges.
“You can’t keep breaking the law and expecting the president to come to your rescue,” George stated, referring to previous reconciliations between Governor Fubara and the lawmakers.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, in a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, formally initiated the impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.
The notice, signed by 26 lawmakers, was officially read out, and Amaewhule confirmed that the governor would be formally served within seven days.
This marks the second attempt to impeach Fubara, with the first one occurring in March 2025, which saw intervention from President Tinubu, resulting in a temporary reconciliation.

No Truth In NSA Harassment Claim – Matawalle’s Aide Replies Zamfara Govt
January 8, 2026
By Richard Ogunsile
An aide to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, Alhaji Suleiman Shinkafi, has dismissed allegations by the Zamfara State Government that the minister was using the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to harass opposition figures in the state, describing the claim as baseless and politically motivated.
Shinkafi insisted that neither Matawalle nor any federal security agency was targeting members of the opposition in Zamfara.
“There is no opposition in Zamfara State. The PDP is the ruling party, while the APC is the opposition,” he told The PUNCH on Thursday.
“I don’t think Matawalle is using the NSA or any other office to harass PDP members. Rather, it is the PDP members who are harassing the opposition.”
Shinkafi further alleged that members of the All Progressives Congress in the state had faced intimidation and persecution since the 2023 governorship election, which he claimed was flawed.
According to him, several APC members were currently in custody over politically related matters.
“When they hijacked and snatched our votes in 2023 and forced themselves into government, I left Gusau. From that time till today, I have not freely stayed in Gusau,” he said.
“As I am talking to you now, about 16 APC members are in custody over politically related cases.”
The Zamfara State Government had earlier accused Matawalle of orchestrating the alleged harassment of opposition figures through the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Naija News reports that the allegation followed the reported abduction of a Technical Assistant to Governor Dauda Lawal, Saleem Abubakar, in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the state government claimed that Abubakar was picked up by operatives believed to be from a special forces unit linked to the NSA’s office, allegedly without an arrest warrant or adherence to due process.
“The most unfortunate and worrying part of the abduction of Saleem Abubakar is that it was syndicated through the office of the NSA by the Minister of State for Defence,” the statement alleged.
The state government described the alleged abduction as shocking and distressing, claiming that Abubakar was moved between undisclosed locations in an attempt to conceal his whereabouts.
It warned that the incident posed a serious threat to the neutrality of Nigeria’s security institutions.
“This is a perilous precedent that all Nigerians must strongly condemn,” Idris said.
The government also called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene and rein in the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The Zamfara State Government maintained that if Abubakar had committed any offence, he should be charged to court in line with due process and the rule of law.
However, Matawalle’s camp has continued to deny any involvement in the alleged arrest or harassment, insisting that the claims were part of a political attempt to smear the minister and federal security institutions.

PAS leadership of Perikatan should not be a concern for coalition partners, says Hadi
By Malay Mail
09 Jan 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — Parties within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition should not be concerned if a PAS leader is appointed to lead the alliance, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said.
He said concerns among party members and leaders would ease once outstanding matters, including the appointment of a new chairman, are resolved in the near future.
“We need support not only from the Muslim community, but also from non-Muslims.
“Any concerns among members and leaders of parties within the PN coalition, including those from non-Muslim parties, will be resolved once administrative matters are managed smoothly,” he said after delivering a Dhuha lecture at Masjid Rusila in Marang today, as reported by national daily Berita Harian.
Abdul Hadi, who is also the Marang MP, was responding to remarks by Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who claimed there were concerns among leaders and members of Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) should PAS assume leadership of PN.
Wan Saiful was reported as saying the two parties believed it could be challenging for them to continue attracting non-Malay support if PAS were to lead the coalition.

Free meal program continues in Ramadan for toddlers, pregnant women
January 8, 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Nutrition Agency (BGN) said the government’s flagship Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program will continue operating throughout Ramadan, with a focus on pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as children under five, as part of efforts to curb stunting.
BGN Head Dadan Hindayana made the remarks during a visit to State Elementary School 01 in Kalibaru, North Jakarta, on Thursday, stressing that the program’s priority extends beyond students to the most nutritionally vulnerable groups.
“Even in 2026, we will continue to prioritize the first 1,000 days of life,” Hindayana said.
“That is why during school holidays and Ramadan, the program will keep running, because our main targets are pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and toddlers. This golden period is very short and decisive for preventing stunting and supporting early brain development,” he added.
He said nutritional support during pregnancy and early childhood must be consistent throughout the year, regardless of religious observances or school schedules, given its long-term impact on physical growth and cognitive development.
The sustained delivery of MBG meals, Hindayana added, is expected to support the government’s target of sharply reducing Indonesia’s national stunting rate, which remains a major public health challenge.
“By the end of 2025, around 55.1 million people had benefited from this program,” he said. “With numbers that large, the supply chain requirements are enormous. Thank God, the MBG program has also generated a significant economic impact.”
According to Hindayana, about 700,000 people were directly employed in 19,188 Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG), or MBG kitchens, across Indonesia by 2025, not including farmers, suppliers and other providers of food ingredients.
BGN previously announced that the MBG program resumed simultaneously nationwide on Thursday, January 8, following the school holiday break. By the end of last year, it had reached approximately 55.1 million beneficiaries.
Launched on January 6, 2025, the free meals program is one of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship initiatives, targeting children under five, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and students up to senior high school level.
The government aims to expand coverage to 82.9 million beneficiaries, making it one of the largest social nutrition programs ever implemented in Indonesia.

Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections nomination preparations enter final stage ahead of tomorrow
09 Jan 2026
KINABATANGAN, Jan 9 — Preparations for the nomination process for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections are progressing smoothly and have entered their final stage.
Election returning officer Eddy Syaizul Rizam Abdullah said arrangements at Dewan Sri Lamag here, which will function as the nomination centre and the official vote tallying centre, are now focused on finalising the venue layout, security measures and technical requirements.
He reminded all prospective candidates to adhere strictly to election laws and regulations set by the Election Commission (EC) to ensure an orderly and smooth process.
Nomination day for both by-elections will take place tomorrow, from 9 am to 10 am.
Addressing concerns over unpredictable weather and the ongoing rainy season in Kinabatangan, which may affect polling operations, Eddy Syaizul said comprehensive contingency plans have been put in place to manage potential flooding or emergencies.
He said helicopters will be deployed for logistical support if land routes become inaccessible.
“Should adverse weather conditions prevent helicopter operations, boats and land vehicles will be used as alternative transport, although travel times may be longer,” he said.
On early-closing polling centres, he said a total of 20 centres are involved. The earliest to close, at noon on Jan 24, are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Ganda in the Sukau state constituency and SK Inarad in the Kuamut state constituency.
The Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections are being held following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5.
The EC has fixed polling for both by-elections on Jan 24, while early voting will take place on Jan 20. — Bernama

Umno Youth plays down Akmal resignation rumours, says chief is hitting Sabah campaign trail
By Malay Mail
09 Jan 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — An Umno Youth leader has moved to dismiss speculation that the wing’s chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh is preparing to resign, using a Facebook post and a planned campaign trip to Sabah to underline that he remains politically active.
Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin appeared to brush off the rumours in a Facebook post today, sharing a photo of himself with Dr Akmal at the airport and questioning the reports as the pair prepared to fly to Sabah.
“What news is this? There’s so much work that needs to be done,” Hafiz wrote, adding: “Let’s go Kinabatangan and Lamag! Fight on!”
Hafiz later confirmed to Free Malaysia Today (FMT) that the reports were untrue, saying he was travelling with Dr Akmal to Kinabatangan, Sabah, to assist Umno’s campaign for the upcoming by-election.
“It’s not true,” he said.
“In fact, we are heading to Kinabatangan now for (tomorrow’s) nominations for the by-election.”
The denial followed a report by Malaysiakini citing unnamed sources who claimed Dr Akmal had expressed an intention to resign as Umno Youth chief and as the Merlimau assemblyman.
According to the report, the Melaka executive councillor had informed a group of Umno Youth leaders via a WhatsApp message while he was in Shanghai, China, that he would relinquish all party positions and his state seat upon returning.
Speculation over Dr Akmal’s future intensified earlier this week after he hinted that he might step aside, saying “perhaps it is time for me to step aside” following Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s rejection of his call for the party to leave the federal government.
Zahid also dismissed Dr Akmal’s proposal for Umno to revive cooperation with PAS under the Muafakat Nasional charter.
Dr Akmal had tabled the proposal during an Umno political bureau meeting on Monday, framing it as a matter of principle after the party’s continued participation in government.

‘A betrayal’: PAS shuts door on Perlis government after leadership crisis
09 Jan 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — PAS has ruled out joining the Perlis government, saying it will reject any invitation to take up positions in the state administration amid what it describes as an attempt to bring down the government.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the decision was final, even if overtures were made.
“We have decided not to accept any positions even if we are invited because of the attempt to bring down the state government,” he told a press conference in Marang today, according to The Star.
Hadi said PAS’s stance on not joining the Perlis state administration had been clearly stated and decided by the party’s top leadership.
“PAS considers it a betrayal to bring down the government led by former Perlis menteri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli,” he said, as reported by Berita Harian.
The stance comes as Perlis undergoes a period of political upheaval following a change in leadership.
The state government is now led by Bersatu’s Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah as menteri besar, with four other Bersatu representatives forming the state executive council.
The transition followed the resignation of former menteri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli in December, who cited health reasons for stepping down.
His departure came after eight statutory declarations were submitted by state assemblymen — three from PAS and five from Bersatu — withdrawing their support for him, The Star reported.
The three PAS assemblymen involved — Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji) — were subsequently sacked from the party.
PAS has since decided that the three seats will remain vacant, with the next state election not due for another two years.
PAS’s refusal to be drawn into the Perlis administration underscores the party’s effort to distance itself from the manoeuvring that destabilised the state government, even as Bersatu consolidates its grip on the state leadership.

Anwar says Ataturk wreath-laying is mandatory protocol for all heads of state visiting Turkiye
09 Jan 2026
ISTANBUL, Jan 8 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the laying of a wreath at the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkiye, is a mandatory official protocol that must be observed by all heads of state during official visits to the country.
Anwar said the ceremony is not a matter of personal choice nor does it reflect the ideological stance of any leader, but is a long-established diplomatic requirement practised by the Turkish government.
“All heads of state undertaking official visits are required to perform the ceremony. Whether one agrees or not, it is part of the official programme that has been set,” he said.
He was speaking at a press conference yesterday before he departed for home after concluding his three-day official visit to Turkiye.
Anwar said the practice applies regardless of the political party or leadership governing Turkiye and has been observed by all Malaysian prime ministers who have previously undertaken official visits to the country.
“Regardless of which government is in power in Turkiye, that is the requirement. All Malaysian prime ministers who previously made official visits, whether Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad or Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, also went through the same ceremony,” he said.
Anwar said the act of paying respects should be viewed within Turkiye’s historical context, particularly the role played by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in leading the resistance against attempts by the Allied powers after the First World War to fragment the territory of the Ottoman Empire, which ultimately led to the country’s liberation and the formation of the modern republic.
“Therefore, the Turkish people view Mustafa Kemal within that context. Of course, I have my own strong personal views, because during the period when he led and governed, there were certain decisions that I feel were not in line with my views, particularly on matters relating to Islam, language reform and script changes.
“… however, that does not erase his contributions, his role, or the way the Turkish people regard a great figure who succeeded in liberating their country from attempts to dismantle it and turn it into part of European colonial territories,” he said.
In this regard, Anwar advised the public not to make hasty judgments or pass condemnation without understanding the historical context and established international diplomatic practices that are customary in relations between nations. — Bernama

‘Unfortunate but not abnormal’: Foreign adviser reacts as US tightens visa rules
8 January 2026
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain today termed the latest decision by the US administration against Bangladesh as very unfortunate.
However, he said such a decision is not abnormal, given the immigration related problems.
"This decision is not just imposed on Bangladesh alone. Bangladesh is among the countries which have immigration related problems. To me, it's nothing abnormal, certainly unfortunate. It hurts us," he told reporters while responding to a question at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The adviser said this policy-related problem had been continuing for a long time, but this government, from day one, raised its voice against irregular migration.
US President Donald Trump's administration has put 25 more countries, including Bangladesh, on a list of nations whose citizens could be required to post bonds of up to $15,000 to apply for entry into the US.
Any citizen or national travelling on a passport issued by one of these countries, who is found otherwise eligible for a B1/B2 visa, must post a bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000," the State Department website said.
Applicants must agree to the terms of the bond through the US Treasury Department's online payment platform, Pay.gov, the State Department said.
The list mostly includes countries from Africa, Latin America and South Asia. It has a total of 38 countries as of Tuesday. The policy for the newly added nations will go into effect on January 21.

Explosion Kills One, Injures Two in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province
By Fidel Rahmati
January 8, 2026
An explosion in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province killed one person and injured two others, officials said on Thursday.
Local Taliban officials said an explosion from a projectile killed one woman and wounded another woman and a child in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province.
Mullah Shafaq, the Taliban district governor of Asmar, said on Thursday the blast occurred a day earlier in Aghaz Bagh Pitaw village.
He said the injured victims were transferred to Kunar’s central hospital for treatment, adding that the condition of one wounded person remains critical.
Authorities did not immediately clarify the origin of the projectile, while an investigation is under way to determine whether unexploded ordnance caused the blast.
Afghanistan remains heavily contaminated with unexploded weapons left behind after decades of war, posing ongoing risks to civilians, particularly in rural areas.
According to humanitarian agencies, women and children account for a significant number of casualties caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance nationwide.
Aid groups and safety experts have repeatedly called for expanded mine-clearance operations and public awareness campaigns to prevent further civilian casualties.

Iran Opens New Milak Border Route to Boost Trade With Afghanistan
By Fidel Rahmati
January 8, 2026
Iran said it has opened a new land route at the Milak border with Afghanistan, doubling cargo traffic and expanding cross-border trade capacity.
Iran’s embassy in Kabul announced on Wednesday that a new land route has been opened at the Milak border crossing with Afghanistan, doubling the capacity for cargo trucks transporting goods between the two countries.
In a post on X, the embassy said the new route will significantly increase the flow of Iranian fuel and commercial exports into Afghanistan through the Milak–Zaranj crossing linking Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province with Afghanistan’s Nimroz province.
The development follows earlier visits to the border by Taliban Industry and Commerce Minister Nooruddin Azizi alongside Iranian officials, during which the two sides agreed to construct a second land corridor to expand trade.
Iranian officials said the project is expected to boost bilateral commerce, with local authorities estimating the crossing could handle up to 1,000 vehicles per day once fully operational.
The Milak crossing is one of Afghanistan’s most important trade gateways, particularly for fuel, food, and construction materials, playing a vital role in sustaining Afghanistan’s import-dependent economy.
Officials say the new route supports broader economic agreements between Iran and the Taliban administration, valued at an estimated $10 billion, and is expected to further deepen cross-border commercial ties.
Since 2021, Iran has expanded economic engagement with Afghanistan, seeking to strengthen border trade and infrastructure cooperation despite international sanctions on both sides.

January 8, 2026
Amir Khan Muttaqi has invited Oman’s foreign minister to Kabul to discuss expanding bilateral trade, transport and diplomatic cooperation.
Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi discussed trade, transit and transport cooperation with Oman’s foreign minister Badr Albusaidi during talks, officials said in Muscat.
According to a Taliban foreign ministry statement, Muttaqi invited Albusaidi to visit Kabul, saying high-level engagement would be beneficial for expanding bilateral cooperation ties.
=Oman has maintained cautious diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover, focusing on regional stability, trade connectivity, and humanitarian dialogue without formally recognizing the administration.
Afghanistan is seeking to diversify economic partnerships amid international isolation, using transit, aviation, and logistics cooperation to strengthen regional trade routes and reduce dependency.
Albusaidi said he was ready to travel to Kabul at an appropriate time, expressing hope for productive talks expanding bilateral cooperation and mutual interests.
He added that an Omani civil aviation technical delegation would visit Kabul soon to discuss transport links and practical cooperation between the two countries.
