Khalistan terror camp running in Canada to attack Punjab; Justin Trudeau govt alerted

Monday, May 30, 2016

New Delhi: The Indian intelligence agencies have alerted Canada's Justin Trudeau government, saying that pro-Khalistan terrorists are  running a camp near Mission city in British Columbia to carry out strikes in Punjab.

According to a report in The Times of India, Punjab intelligence officers have prepared a report mentioning that Canadian Sikh Hardeep Nijjar, the new operational head of Khalistan Terror Force (KTF), has formed a module comprising Sikh youths to carry out the attacks.

Nijjar is a baptized Sikh staying in Surrey since 1995 on a Canadian passport. Seeking Nijjar’s extradition, the Punjab government has submitted the report to the Ministry of External Affairs as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Referring to the attack which took place at Pathankot airbase on January 2, the report said Nijjar "was to arrange weapons from Pakistan but due to high alert on the border in the wake of Pathankot incident, it could not materialize".

"Nijjar has been imparting arms training to his group in Canada after the arrest of former KTF chief Jagtar Tara in Thailand by the Interpol last year. He took Mandeep Singh and three more Sikh youths recently for AK-47 training in a range near Mission where they were made to fire for four hours daily," the report said.

Nijjar is a proclaimed terrorist in Punjab.

In April, a report in the Hindustan Times said that the Indian government has intelligence inputs which indicate that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency is using Sikh extremists in Canada for pro-Khalistan and anti-India activities.

As per the Indian security agencies, Nijjar travelled to Thailand in December 2014 to meet Jagtar Singh Tara, named in the 1995 assassination of Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, and provided financial help to him.

Notably, Tara was arrested in Thailand and deported to India in January last year.

Later, apparently on Tara’s order, Nijjar travelled to Pakistan to arrange for Tara’s escape from Thailand with ISI’s help.

Nijjar was also suspected to be involved in a plan to attack camps of Dera Sacha Sauda, the sect led by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

First Jewish wedding at historical synagogue in northwest Turkey in 41 years

May 30, 2016

A Jewish wedding ceremony was held in a historical synagogue in the northwestern province of Edirne on May 29 for the first time in 41 years. The synagogue had recently been restored by the Edirne Directorate General of Foundations and reopened for worship.

Güneş Mitrani, 30, and Harun Esentürk, 34, got married in the synagogue, which also hosted the wedding of Rifat Mitrani, who was the only representative of the Jewish community in Edirne, and Sara Mitrani years ago.

Built for the Jews taking refuge in the Ottoman Empire in 1492, the synagogue is Europe’s biggest and the world’s third biggest synagogue.

Tight security measures were taken in the neighborhood around the synagogue, including the closure of roads leading to the synagogue and security searches of the wedding guests arriving from Istanbul. The guests also went through an x-ray machine at the entrance of the synagogue, which was installed a month ago.

The female and male guests watched the ceremony from separate places in the hall.

Edirne Deputy Gov. Mehmet Tekinarslan and Mayor Recep Gürkan, as well as Turkish Jewish Society head İshak İbrahimzade, the couple’s relatives and approximately 3,000 guests, participated in the wedding.

Beadsmen Nesim and Viktor Beruhiyel from the Jewish Society administered the wedding ceremony, during which prayers were said for Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“No matter what they say, no matter what they think, as Atatürk said, the Turkish Republic will last forever,” said the beadsmen, referring to the words of Turkey’s founding father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The official marriage ceremony was performed by the mayor after prayers and a religious wedding.

Gürkan wished the couple a lifetime of happiness and stressed that “history was being written.”

“We are experiencing the honor and joy of taking part in the first [Jewish] wedding after 41 years. I would wish for you to stay in Edirne,  but it’s impossible to fix. However, please come to Edirne more often. We are expecting you,” Gürkan said.

Islamic banking set to launch in India amid controversy

May 29, 2016

NEW DELHI // India will get its first taste of sharia-compliant banking when the Saudi Arabia-based Islamic Development Bank launches operations in the western state of Gujarat. No date has yet been announced for the opening of the IDB’s first branch in India, but already complaints have emerged within the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. The IDB, an international investment organisation based in Jeddah, was established to channel funds into infrastructure in the Islamic  world, as well as social and educational development. Though India is not typically seen as being part of the “Islamic world", its 180 million-strong Muslim population makes it an attractive place for the IDB to set up shop.Like other Islamic banks, the IDB does not charge interest on loans or pay interest on deposits. It also follows a code of ethical  financing, refraining from investing in industries that are considered harmful in Islam. These include businesses involving liquor, pornography or gambling.

May 30, 2016

In a few weeks, thousands of Pandits from across India will arrive at Tulla Mulla in Ganderbal, around 27 km from Srinagar, for the Kheer Bhawani mela, a religious festival associated with Goddess Ragnya Devi.

While Kashmiri Muslims make arrangements for the fair, the Hindus hold night-long prayers at the temple. The fair, in a way, is symbolic of the valley’s religious harmony that came apart in the early 90s when Pandits were forced to leave.

The terror group have fired rockets at overcrowded settlements across the border – and yesterday restarted their blasts after a two-week pause.

At least 6,000 civilians fled the onslaught in eastern Aleppo yesterday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Bosnia's 'radical' Muslims defy crackdown

30 MAY 2016

Two veiled women work the land while a man collects eggs in a bucolic Bosnian village – now notorious for exporting fighters to Syria. “This is how we finance terrorism,” joked 50-year old Izet Hadzic as he opened his henhouse in Osve, which overlooks a peaceful valley in the Balkan country’s north. A grey-bearded former rock musician, Hadzic founded this “dzemat” (religious community) in the late 2000s – one of dozens in Bosnia that refuse to comply with the country’s official Muslim leaders.

The radicalisation of Kosovo

Monday 30 May 2016

Kosovo has been one of Europe's most pro-American states since the US-led NATO intervention in 1999 helped it break free of Serbian control and gain independence in 2008. But for some time the tide has been turning.

Now, like the rest of Europe, Kosovo finds itself trying to fend off the threat of radical Islam. In the last two years, more than 300 Kosovars, including 28 children, have left Kosovo to join Islamic State in Iraq and Syria; the highest per capita ratio in Europe.

A New York Times report has revealed how Saudi money and influence has radicalised the once-tolerant Muslim country.

Europe on the brink

Monday 30 May 2016

BERLIN — Austria climbed to the top of an Alpine precipice this week, dangled one foot over the edge and pulled itself back, just in time. And millions of their fellow Europeans heaved a sigh of relief.

By the narrowest of margins — just 31,000 votes in a nation of 8.6 million — Austrians voted 50.3 per cent to elect Alexander Van der Bellen, a 72-year-old retired economics professor and former Green Party leader, as their president, defeating far-right candidate Norbert Hofer.

It was a close call for a country that has only recently come to terms with its Nazi past, and yet another wakeup call for a Europe facing a populist surge on the extreme right.

The migrant crisis, growing unemployment, resentment of the bureaucratic centralization of the European Union — all were factors in the remarkable rise of the Freedom Party’s Hofer, an aeronautical engineer and father of four, part of a new generation of right-wing politicians who hide their xenophobic and nativist views behind a façade of modernism and a certain charm.
