Activists Invite Saudi People to General Strike over Riyadh's Austerity Plan

31 Oct. 16

TEHRAN (FNA)- Social media activists in Saudi Arabia have invited people to launch a general strike in protest at the government's economic austerity policies.

According to the Arabic-language al-Rai al-Youm news website, after Riyadh decided to implement economic austerity plans in the country and pressured people, opposition voices growing stronger every day.

When activists started the Hashtag #اضراب_الشعب_یوم_الاحد  (national strike on Sunday) on social media pages, tens of thousands joined to trend it in a matter of hours.

Nourah al-Harbi, one of the activists, wrote in her twitter page that the government should stop fooling people with its hollow promises, and urged people to join the nationwide strike.

The campaign has been launched as people in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province have been holding demonstrations since February 2011, with protesters demanding reforms, freedom of expression, the release of political prisoners, and an end to widespread discrimination against the people of the oil-rich region.

Several people have been killed and many others injured or arrested during the rallies. International rights bodies, including Amnesty International, have slammed Saudi Arabia for its grim human rights record and its repressive policies toward political dissent.

Earlier this year, the Saudi regime executed dozens of people, including prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, whose death caused international outrage and a serious escalation of tensions in the region.

An Openly Gay Imam Leads Friday Prayers At Cape Town Mosque

AFP, Cape Town | Updated: Oct 31, 2016

Friday prayers at the People’s Mosque in Cape Town looks like any other around the Islamic world, except in this South African city the imam is openly gay and the teaching promotes homosexual rights.

It is a stance that provokes outrage from many Muslims, but Muhsin Hendricks has built up a small, loyal congregation by helping worshippers try to reconcile their sexuality and their religion.

“There is this love-hate relationship from the Muslim community,” Hendricks told AFP.

“Sometimes they feel that I should be thrown from the highest mountain, and sometimes they appreciate that there is one imam who is willing to work with people who they are unwilling to work with.”

Cape Town has an active gay scene, and is often described as the “gay capital” of Africa, with a district of gay-friendly restaurants, bars, guesthouses and clubs near the city centre.

In 1996 Hendricks founded “The Inner Circle”, a support group for Muslims living in Cape Town who felt rejected due to their sexual orientation, which led to him setting up the mosque five years ago.

In contrast to the emotions that surround the explosive topic of Islam and homosexuality, the mosque offers a calm and open place for gay Muslims to worship together.

“I got divorced at the age of 29 after being married (to a woman) for six years,” Henrdicks, 48, said.

“That was the point where I just felt -- no more double life. I needed to be authentic with myself, and part of that process was to come out.

“This is who I am and if that means I am going to be killed because of my authenticity, then that is how I choose to meet God.”

- ‘Homophobic messaging’ -

Today the mosque, located at the Inner Circle offices, has about 25 regular worshippers, and even offers a marriage blessing to gay couples.

South Africa’s 1996 constitution was the first in the world to protect homosexuals’ rights, and the country is the only one in Africa that allows same sex marriages.

But many South Africans of all religious groups are less tolerant, and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people are often subject to discrimination and violence.

There are about 300,000 Muslims in Cape Town and most mosque leaders in the city take a clear stand against homosexuality, even encouraging home imprisonment and “corrective treatment”.

“Homosexuality is unacceptable and the punishment will be the fire,” Imam Pandy, leader of a mosque in Mowbray, a busy central district of Cape Town, told AFP.

“How can you be homosexual? It is forbidden. And it is your duty as an imam or as a Muslim to go and speak to them and say ‘no, it cannot be’.”

The Inner Circle group has worked for 20 years to support gay Muslims, often struggling to survive against overwhelming opposition from orthodox Islamic leaders.

“The messaging that the Muslim community gets about queer issues comes from a clergy that is completely homophobic,” said Abdul Karriem Matthews, programme manager at the Inner Circle.

8 SIMI terrorists who escaped Bhopal Central Jail killed in encounter

P Naveen | TNN | Updated: Oct 31, 2016

BHOPAL: It took only eight hours for the Madhya Pradesh police and its Anti-Terrorist squad (ATS) to chase and kill the eight Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) terrorists after they broke out of Bhopal Central Jail+ early this morning, having killed a head constable and scaling the walls of the 'high-security' premises using prison bed sheets.

They were cornered and gunned down 10km away from the prison, on the outskirts of the city, in a joint operation of the city police, a counter terrorist group (CTG) and an ATS team led by IPS officer Sanjeev Shami.

Following information they received from villagers in the area, police located the terrorists+ near Manikheda, which comes under the Gunga police station.

"When they (the terrorists) were confronted by a few of the villagers, they started pelting stones. Villagers mistook them for robbers and alerted the police. When they were asked to surrender, they opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate," said IG Yogesh Chaudhary, who was part of the operation. Two policemen were also injured in the encounter which lasted for nearly an hour. They were carrying dates and other food materials with them. Efforts are being made to trace the identity of those who supported them in the jail break+ .

Meanwhile, Madhya chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said four police officials have been suspended and that the NIA will probe the jail-break. He said he spoke to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and suggested the NIA should carry out the investigation in the matter.

"I spoke about how the NIA should carry out the investigation in the matter. The home minister agreed," the chief minister said.

The terrorists were identified as Mohammad Aqeel Khilji alias Abdullah s/o Mohammad Yusuf, Mehboob Guddu alias Malik s/o Ismail of Khandwa (MP), Mohammad Khalid Ahmad s/o Mohammad Saleem of Sholapur Maharashtra, Mujeeb Sheikh alias Akram alias Wasim alias Nawed alias Nitin alias Faizan alias Chintoo alias Yusuf s/o Zamal Ahmad resident of Juhapura (Ahmedabad) Gujarat, Amzad s/o Ramzan Khan, Zakir Hussein Sheikh alias Vicky don alias Vinay Kumar s/o Badalul Hussein and Abdul Majid s/o Mohammad Yusuf of Ujjain (MP).

Most of them had been charged with terror and other heinous crimes, as they were linked to home-grown terror outfits like the Indian Mujahedeen.

Of the eight terrorists who escaped today, Zakir Hussein Sheikh, Mehboob Guddu and Amzad were involved in the October 2013- Khandwa jail break incident in which four others - led by SIMI's MP chief Abu Faisal - used iron bars to dig a hole in the toilet wall from where they got out of their cells. After that, they also used prison bed-sheets to scale the 20-foot high boundary wall.

This morning, SIMI operatives took along five other members. Their modus operandi was very similar to the one used in Khandwa.

"Eight SIMI activists escaped around 2-3am by killing a jail security guard," DIG Bhopal Raman Singh told the media early this morning. Most of the escapees has been charged with terror and other heinous crimes and many of them were linked to home-grown terror outfits like the Indian Mujahedeen.

Home minister Bhupendra Singh called the jail break "unfortunate". During a recent coordination meeting chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had asked jail authorities to be more vigilant , said the home minister.

Now, Baloch activists begin new sit-in protest outside Chinese embassy in London

TNN & Agencies | Oct 31, 2016

NEW DELHI: The Free Balochistan Movement (FBM), a pro-freedom Baloch political party, began a week-long sit-in protest outside the Chinese Embassy in London on Sunday.

This week's protest comes a little over a month after the FBM organized a similar protest in September against the "China-Pakistan nexus" in Pakistan's Balochistan province.

The protest currently under way is against "China's financial and military support to Pakistan", the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) "against the popular will of (the) Baloch nation," and "China's presence in Gwadar (a port city in Balochistan) where the local Baloch population is being expelled from their native villages," the FBM said.

The CPEC is a collection of infrastructure and energy projects worth around $46 billion, which will connect China's largest province Xinjiang with Gwadar port in Balochistan. Launched in 2015, the CPEC passes through both Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Balochistan.

The FBM has also alleged that China supports an increasingly isolated Pakistan to "strengthen its occupation" of Balochistan, and that it's "trying hard to save the crippling economy of Pakistan through safe deposit."

The party has invited all pro-freedom Baloch organizations and other human rights organizations to take part in its protest, which will end on November 6.

On the last day, there will be a protest demonsrtation between 1 and 3 PM outside the Chinese Embassy, followed by a march from the embassy to the Marble Arch, a 19th century monument.

Riyadh says two IS cells busted

AFP — October 31st, 2016

RIYADH: Saudi authorities said on Sunday they had foiled a plot to bomb a football stadium during a World Cup qualifying match and dismantled two “terrorist” cells linked to the militant Islamic State (IS) group.

The interior ministry said in a statement that four suspects from each cell had been arrested.

One of the cells had planned to park a bomb-laden vehicle outside Al-Jawhara stadium in Jeddah during an October 11 World Cup qualifying football match between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the ministry said.

Two Pakistanis among those arrested

Its members were two Pakistanis, a Syrian, and a Sudanese, the ministry said, without providing further details of the plot or arrests.

The other group had been plotting attacks against security forces and its members had received orders from an IS leader in Syria, the ministry said.

Its alleged members were based in Shaqra, northwest of Riyadh, and are all Saudis, the ministry statement said, adding that the suspects had all confessed.

Six other Saudis were detained and were being questioned over alleged links to the cell, it said.

Since late 2014, IS has claimed a series of bombings and shootings against Shias in the kingdom, as well as against security forces.

In another statement, the interior ministry published a list of nine suspects — eight Saudis and a Bahraini, wanted for their alleged involvement in “terrorist” acts in the eastern provinces of Qatif and Dammam, home to most of the kingdom’s Shia minority population.

The suspects were allegedly involved in attacks against civilians and members of the security forces, the statement said.

It urged the suspects to surrender and offered financial rewards for those who could provide information leading to their arrests.

IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has called for attacks against Saudi Arabia, which is part of the US-led coalition bombing the militants in Syria and Iraq.

In July authorities arrested 19 people, including 12 Pakistanis, in connection with three suicide bombings on July 4, including one in Madina in which four people died.

Saudi Arabia Arrests Suspects Linked to Islamic State

Oct. 30, 2016

RIYADH—Saudi Arabia has arrested more than a dozen suspects linked to Islamic State, the Ministry of Interior said Sunday, moves intended to head off attacks inside the kingdom that would have echoed recent assaults in Europe.

Four people were arrested on October 10, one day before a soccer match between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in the coastal city of Jeddah, where more than 60,000 spectators had gathered to watch the 2018 World Cup qualifier game. The people—two Pakistanis, a Syrian and a Sudanese—were planning a suicide car bomb attack during or after the match, ministry officials said.

The plot was similar to an attack carried out by Islamic State last November in France where three suicide bombers targeted the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, part of a wider range of attacks the same day. Four people were killed in the stadium attack, including the three bombers.

Dutch Anti-Islam Politician Wilders'' Hatred Trial Starts

October 31, 2016

AMSTERDAM—Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders went on trial for discrimination and inciting hatred, in a case that could have far-reaching consequences for the political climate in the Netherlands ahead of general elections.

The trial in a high-security courtroom near Amsterdam'sSchiphol airport, which formally began Monday, comes as Mr. Wilders is expected to become a front-runner in the March vote. His trial will address a fundamental question: is the right of free speech for politicians absolute, or should it be restricted to protect against discrimination?

Mr. Wilders is being charged over comments he made during local elections in the Netherlands in 2014. At a party rally in The Hague, he asked supporters if they wanted more or fewer Moroccans in the country. The crowd responded by chanting: "Fewer! Fewer! Fewer!" Mr. Wilders replied: "Well, we'll take care of it then."

Turkish gov’t building a ‘Baathist regime,’ main opposition head says
