A total of 55 stone sculptures were found in the
Gyanvapi mosque complex during the survey conducted by the Archaeological
Survey of India, including 15 “Shiva Linga”, three sculptures of “Vishnu”,
three of “Ganesha”, two of “Nandi”, two of “Krishna”, and five of “Hanuman”,
the ASI report states.
The ASI, tasked by the Varanasi district court to
ascertain whether the mosque was “constructed over a pre-existing structure of
a Hindu temple”, has concluded that a temple “appears to have been destroyed in
the 17th century, during the reign of Aurangzeb and part of it… modified and
reused in the existing structure”. The ASI report — it’s in four volumes — was
made public Thursday after copies of it were handed over to Hindu and Muslim
litigants by the court.

January 27, 2024
JEDDAH: Jazz enthusiasts gathered at Al-Balad, the historical
area of Jeddah, for the inaugural Jazz Festival, part of the Balad Al-Fann
initiative.
Organized by the Historic Jeddah Program and curated
by Saut Al-Balad, a platform dedicated to reviving classical music, the
three-night event from Jan. 25-27 aimed to blend traditional and contemporary
music, offering a unique cultural experience in Jeddah.
Mohammed Bakhreiba, project manager of Saut Al-Balad,
expressed the initiative’s vision during the opening remarks, stating: “Saut
Al-Balad is a musical initiative aiming to revive classical Saudi music with a
history spanning 60 years. Today, we want to revive this historical legacy in a
modern way, supporting new talents and hosting numerous events throughout the
program.”
The festival’s kickoff night showcased a three-hour
performance by four German jazz stars: Matias on keys, Tobias on saxophone,
Mories on bass, and Johannes on drums. They delivered an improvizational
performance, setting the stage for the subsequent acts.
Johannes shared his thoughts on performing in front of
a Saudi audience. “Honestly, it’s interesting to play in front of a Saudi
audience. The atmosphere here is very unique,” he told Arab News.
Saudi jazz singer Loulwa Al-Sharif performed classics
such as “My Funny Valentine” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You,” along with
an original composition titled “Min Resalah” or “Just a Message.”
Suha Mohammadi, a jazz music fan from Saudi Arabia,
expressed her admiration for Al-Sharif’s performance. “The lyrics of the song
were very heartwarming,” Mohammadi said, describing the blend of Arabic
language with foreign music as “enchanting.”
British singer Chris Jacobs delivered a captivating
performance, including renditions of timeless classics like “Sway with Me” and
“Under My Skin” by Frank Sinatra.
He told the audience: “It’s absolutely stunning for me
to be here once again. Thank you for having me; it’s just such a beautiful
place to play.”
Emirati jazz singer Arqam Al-Abri made his debut in
Jeddah, presenting jazz songs while donning the Emirati national dress. Al-Abri
performed classics like “Just the Two of Us” and expressed his gratitude for
being part of the cultural gathering in Jeddah.
He told Arab News: “It is incredible to witness the
mashup of various cultures, artists, and music genres coming together in Jeddah
to create something beautiful. I am humbled and honored to be part of this, and
I look forward to participating in more events in Jeddah.”
Balad Al-Fann aims to enhance Saudi Arabia’s cultural
landscape through the universal language of art, reviving creativity in
Historic Jeddah.
The Jazz Festival in Jeddah provided a fantastic
opportunity for audiences to enjoy diverse musical styles while exploring the
rich heritage of Historic Jeddah.

B.C.’s largest mosque is inviting members of the
public who have questions about Islam past its gates and inside the building
for coffee this weekend.
It’s part of a nationwide attempt by the religious
organization Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at to quell a wave of Islamophobia it says
is emerging as a result of political tensions from the Israel-Hamas conflict
overseas.
Beginning on Sunday afternoon, imam Umran Bhatti and
others from Delta’s Baitur Rahman mosque will invite people inside, offering
them a cup of coffee, some cake, and a chance to ask any questions they have
about the religion.
“There is a harmful misconception that the Islamic
religion promotes extremism, but that’s against the teachings of our holy
prophet which are to promote love and peace for all,” said Bhatti.

Arab and Muslim American Leaders in Michigan Just
Cancelled a Meeting With the Biden Campaign

28-01-2024
A group of Muslim and Arab-American voters and
community leaders in Michigan have decided to pass on the meeting with
President Joe Biden’s campaign that had been planned for Saturday. Leaders say
that they’ve cancelled the meeting because of the President’s apparent
unwillingness to restrain Israel in its months-long attack on Gaza.
Following weeks of public statements by Arab American
and Muslim activists, advocates, and voters that they would not support Biden
in 2024 because he backs Israel as it lays siege on Gaza, his campaign
attempted to connect with community leaders in the Detroit area, where one of
the largest Arabic-speaking populations in the country is located. The campaign
hoped to discuss these concerns and had scheduled a meeting between leaders and
campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodriguez.
“We’re dumbfounded,” the National Executive Director
of The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Abed Ayoub, told ABC News.
“Why does this administration still believe that we’re just going to be willing
to meet with them with no movement on their part on our demands? And they’ve
been the same demands since October, and nothing’s changed.”
Biden had publicly dismissed the likelihood that Arab
and Muslim Americans would not vote for him in the 2024 election if he
continued to remain silent about the relentless attacks by the Israeli military
on Gaza, in what some have described as an act of genocide on Palestinians (the
United Nations is currently hearing a case on this now).
“The former president wants to put a ban on Arabs
coming into the country,” said Biden earlier in January, referring to Trump’s
2017 directive that had banned people from several Muslim-majority countries
from entering the US. “We understand who cares about the Arab population.”
This may have once been true during the 2020 election
when Biden received 70 percent of the vote in Arab and Muslim-American counties
in Michigan, but polls have shown that since the Hamas attack and the Israeli
response, two-thirds of Arab and Muslim-American voters would vote against the
incumbent president.
Following the Hamas attack on October 7, in which 1,200 Israeli civilians were killed
and approximately 240 people were taken hostage—around 132 of them remaining in
captivity— Israel’s military assault on Gaza has killed more than 26,000
Palestinians, including more than 10,000 children and 83 journalists. The Biden
administration has declined to intervene, maintaining U.S. aid to Israel.
Though recurring stories have been published about the administration’s leaked
internal frustrations with Israel, it has hesitated to publicly express concern
about the air strikes and military actions within Gaza—an approach that my
colleague, Noah Lanard, has noted is unique by the standards of recent American
presidents.
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud who had been slated to
attend the meeting, expressed his frustration with the Biden administration on
X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Our immediate demand is crystal clear: the
Biden Administration must call for a permanent ceasefire to a genocide it is
defending and funding with our tax dollars. Dearborn residents have tirelessly
protested and organized in demand of a ceasefire. As their mayor, I follow
their lead.”

Archaeological Survey of India’s report shallow:
Gyanvapi mosque committee
Piyush Srivastava
28.01.24
The management committee of the Gyanvapi mosque in
Varanasi has dismissed the Archaeological Survey of India’s survey report as
shallow and based on trivial findings rather than scientific studies, adding it
is not surprised given the central agency’s track record.
Lawyers for the Hindu petitioners had said after
receiving a copy of the ASI report on Thursday that it corroborated their claim
that the mosque was built after demolishing parts of the Kashi Vishwanath
temple.
However, Ekhlaq Ahmad, counsel for the Anjuman
Intezamia Masjid Committee, said the ASI findings did not amount to evidence
that a temple existed at the site before the mosque was built.

Hanuman Idol To Wazu Khana Survey: All That Unfolded
After Release Of Gyanvapi Mosque's ASI Report
By: Asmita Ravi Shankar
JANUARY 28, 2024
The findings of a scientific survey by the
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi premises
confirmed the existence of a temple before the construction of the mosque.
Following ASI’s survey report, the Vishva Hindu
Parishad (VHP) urged the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee to consider the new
report and “make an offer to respectfully” move the Gyanvapi mosque to “another
appropriate place” and “handover” the site to the Hindu community.
VHP’s International Working President, Alok Kumar,
said that the organisation makes two demands following the confirmation of a
temple’s existence. First is for the offering of ‘Sewa Puja‘ to the Shivling
found in Wazu Khana and second to handover the original site to the Hindu
community.
During the scientific survey by ASI inside the
Gyanvapi mosque premises, as many as 55 stone sculptures were found. This included,
15 “Shivling“, three Lord “Vishnu” sculptures, three of Lord “Ganesh“, two
“Nandi”, two “Krishna” and five “Hanuman” sculptures.

Gujarat Police 'Rough Up Accused', Arrest Muslims
After Skirmish During Ram Temple Yatra
TarushiAswani
28-01-2024
Mehsana: Belim Vas is a Muslim-majority area in
Kheralu of north Gujarat’s Mehsana district. Here, locals are careful to keep
their own movements limited and are watchful of police officers stationed in
the area.
On January 21, Hindu residents in the area led a
‘shobhayatra’ – a rally – on the eve of the consecration ceremony at the Ram
temple in Ayodhya. Locals’ estimates have it that at least 600-700 people
participated in this rally.
The rally diverted from its set map, took a different
route and reached a mosque in the area, locals say. Local Muslims urged the
revellers in the procession to not play loud music and engage in bursting
crackers outside the mosque. Those pleas were ignored by the revellers, they
say.
A verbal spat began, which became violent. The rally
participants used swords, sticks and stones, locals said. This is visible in
videos of the incident seen by The Wire as well.

JUMANA AL-TAMIMI
January 27, 2024
DUBAI: Saudi Arabia is not only the Middle East’s
largest regional market for pharmaceuticals and vaccines, but also has been
strategically investing in biotechnology-related sectors. The country’s genetic
diversity and geographical climate provide ideal conditions for conducting
complex studies and research.
It has also been clear that the Kingdom is committed
to developing and training national talent in biotech research, development and
innovation, while enabling a competitive and digital infrastructure.
The new National Biotechnology Strategy, unveiled by
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last week, is the latest shot in the arm for
such fields as biomanufacturing, food, genomics, vaccine industries and plant
optimization.
Localizing vaccine manufacturing and improving the
health of Saudi citizens are among the key goals of the strategy. But that is
just for a start.
The initiative aims to safeguard the environment,
achieve food and water security, and solidify Saudi Arabia’s position as a
global leader in the sector, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

January 27, 2024
Reisu-l-ulema of the Islamic community in
BiHHuseinKavazović and the president of the World Federation of Bergen-Belsen
Associations Menahem Z. Rozenzaft launched today in Srebrenica a Muslim-Jewish
peace initiative whose goal is to promote mutual understanding and dialogue
between the Jewish and Muslim communities.
At the event organized by the Srebrenica Memorial
Center on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, it was
pointed out that the initiative defines tools for maintaining interreligious
contacts, chains of communication and connections in difficult times of global,
regional and/or local conflicts, which include the Muslim and Jewish
communities.
Reis Kavazović stated that the principles that can be
a guide to a better future for Jews and Muslims in the world are the commitment
to the memory of the victims of past genocides, the rejection of all forms of
anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other intolerances, and a determined commitment
to the protection of life and freedom of expression within the framework of
respect in such a way that, as friends we can tell each other what worries us,
as well as our expectations, fears and hopes.
“And not only to them, because our initiative for
peace and memory today is an invitation to everyone, especially our Orthodox
and Catholic neighbors, to join us on this journey,” Kavazović pointed out.

Biden Aide Urges Beijing to Press Iran Over Attacks by
Yemen’s Houthi Rebels
BY KANIS LEUNG
JANUARY 27, 2024
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan pressed
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during talks in Thailand to use China's
influence with Iran to ease tensions in the Middle East. The officials also
agreed to work toward arranging a call between President Joe Biden and Chinese
leader Xi Jinping.
The meetings Friday and Saturday in Bangkok, which
followed up on the presidents' discussions in November in California, took
place after a ruling-party candidate opposed by Beijing won Taiwan's recent
presidential election and U.S. and Chinese military officials resumed a
once-frozen dialogue. They played out as attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels
in Yemen continue to threaten global shipping in the Red Sea.
A senior U.S. official said Sullivan cited China's
extensive economic leverage over Iran and emphasized that the destabilizing
effect of the Houthi attacks on international commerce. The official noted that
China has publicly called for lower tensions, but said it was too soon to tell
whether Beijing was using its diplomatic muscle to press Tehran on the matter.
The official was not authorized to publicly discuss the private conversations
between Sullivan and Wang and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Muslims, Jews Gather In Bosnia To Mark Holocaust, 1995
Genocide
January 27, 2024
POTOCARI, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- Muslims and Jews from
across Bosnia-Herzegovina traveled to the Srebrenica region -- site of a 1995
genocide during the Yugoslav war -- to jointly mark International Holocaust
Remembrance Day and to sign an initiative designed to promote mutual
understanding and dialogue between the two communities.
"Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Jews are one body.
Our ties are intricate, forged in hard times and times of prosperity and
interaction," HuseinKavazovic, head of Bosnia's Islamic Community, told a
group of survivors and descendants of victims of the World War II-era Holocaust
and the Srebrenica genocide.
"Both our peoples have suffered and experienced
attempts to destroy and eradicate them. At the present time -- when the evils
of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are gaining ground around Europe and the
world -- we must renew our vow to be good neighbors and care for one
another," he added.
In July 1995, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and
boys were rounded up and killed by Bosnian Serb forces in Potocari near the
eastern town of Srebrenica -- the worst mass killing in Europe since World War
II.

“Seven years ago, Donald Trump made clear to Americans
and to the world that he would follow through on this plans to undermine the
basic tenets of our democracy, inflicting pain and confusion on thousands of
Americans who could not reunite with their loved ones, all for the sake of a
cynical ploy that did nothing to make America safer or stronger. Trump’s cruel
and unconstitutional Muslim ban sent a message to millions of Muslim Americans
that he would threaten, scapegoat, and villainize them – and now he is
promising to do it again if he gets a second term in office. Trump has pledged
to be a ‘dictator on day one,’ peddling the same extreme and divisive agenda
Americans rejected outright in 2020. Voters will reject hate, bigotry,
xenophobia, and Donald Trump again at the ballot box this November.”
One of Trump’s first actions when he was in office was
immediately implementing his campaign pledge to enact a Muslim travel ban just
days after being sworn in – which caused chaos and confusion across the
country.

Trump opposes Biden’s immigration plan, criticises
'open borders' approach
28-01-2024
Donald Trump has underlined his opposition to a
bipartisan immigration plan that President Joe Biden has promised to use to
"shut down" the border with Mexico if it becomes overwhelmed, while
at the same time criticising the Democrat for "open borders."
With immigration one of the hottest electoral issues
in what increasingly looks like a Trump-Biden rematch for the White House this
year, the fate of the bill being negotiated by the Senate has become a
high-stakes battleground.
"It would give me, as president, a new emergency
authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given
that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law," he said
in a statement.

UN agency in Gaza on brink of collapse after

Arpan Rai
28-01-2024
The UN’s aid agency in Gaza is on the brink of
collapse, its head has said, after nine nations including the US and UK decided
to suspend funding over allegations that several agency workers participated in
the Hamas attack against Israel.
The Foreign Office said in a statement that the UK was
“appalled” by allegations that UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works
Agency) staff were involved in the 7 October attack, “a heinous act of
terrorism” that the UK government has repeatedly condemned.
“The UK is temporarily pausing any future funding of
UNRWA whilst we review these concerning allegations,” it said in a statement on

Pakistan
Peoples Party keeps ‘people-centric’ reforms in focus
Kalbe Ali
January 28, 2024
ISLAMABAD: After the release of its 10-point economic
agenda earlier this month, the PPP on Saturday released its election manifesto,
promising to provide relief to the inflation-stricken populace through focus on
rights and governance reforms.
The 64-page manifesto — titled Chuno Nai SochKo (elect
new vision] — shared by PPP leader Sherry Rehman promises devolution of power
under the 18th Amendment, criminalisation of enforced disappearances,
accountability of intelligence agencies, as well as efforts to depoliticise and
de-corporatise the ‘national security complex’.
It also promises a shift from a ‘security state’ to a
welfare state, which prioritises the rights of citizens over the privileges of
the civil-military bureaucratic complex. The PPP announced that it would repeal
“discriminatory and outdated colonial laws that are inconsistent with human
rights principles”. This includes revisiting the Clause 2 (1d) of the Army Act.

PML-N’s power show in Pindi a damp squib
Aamir Yasin
January 28, 2024
RAWALPINDI: More than a week after the PML-N stepped
up its election campaign, the former ruling party failed to put up an
‘impressive’ power show in Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh ostensibly due to bad
weather and the party’s local chapter’s alleged failure to whip up support
ahead of the gathering.
The public meeting was addressed by PML-N President
Shehbaz Sharif, who hardly spoke for 10 minutes on the occasion. According to
Mr Sharif, if voted to power, his party would initiate development and social
welfare projects in the garrison city.
Some party supporters believed the absence of Nawaz
Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, both considered crowd pullers, also dampened the
enthusiasm of the PML-N workers, who were present in significant numbers but
less than what the party had expected.
A senior PML-N leader told Dawn that the party was
worried about the failure of its regional and local leadership which could not
mobilise the masses for the public meeting. “Though the party’s city chapter
mobilised the workers across all union councils, the district chapter failed to
bring workers from other tehsils of Rawalpindi,” he claimed.

Alabama's new execution method: What is nitrogen

Jan 27, 2024
Alabama successfully executed a man who spent decades
on death row using a new method called nitrogen hypoxia. DW delves into the
method's scientific and ethical implications.
In 2022, Smith survived an attempted execution by
lethal injection when his executioners repeatedly failed to insert an
intravenous line for the drugs used to flow into his body.
Lethal injections were introduced in 1982 in the US,
where they are the most common method of execution. Lethal injections contain
one or more drugs, including anesthetics, barbiturates and paralytic agents
(muscles relaxants).
Some states use fentanyl, a pain killer that is about
50 times stronger than heroin and increasingly considered to be responsible for
many accidental drug overdoses.

Jews and Muslims launch peace initiative from
Srebrenica
January 28, 2024
Jewish and Muslim dignitaries launched a passionate
appeal for peace on Saturday from the Bosnian town of Srebrenica on
International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as deadly fighting rages in the Gaza

A “Jewish-Muslim Initiative for Peace” was presented
and signed at the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Centre by the President of the
World Federation of Bergen-Belsen Associations and American lawyer, Menachem
Rosensaft, and the religious leader of Bosnian Muslims, HuseinKavazovic.
The place where the appeal was launched holds a
symbolic weight, as the Bosnian town saw around 8,000 Muslim men and teenagers
killed by Bosnian Serb forces in 1995 — a crime described as genocide by
international justice.
“We join together in sorrow and our tears become
prayers, prayers of remembrance, but also prayers of hope”, Rosensaft — who is
