‘Jamaat-e-IslamiBangladesh will establish US, Indian types of justice’: Says IslamiAndolan Bangladesh chief

2 Feb 2026

---------

Coming down heavily on Jamaat-e-Islami, IslamiAndolan Bangladesh (IAB) Ameer Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim yesterday said Jamaat plans to hold “secret meetings” with the US and India to implement “their own versions of justice”.

He made the remarks while addressing an election rally in Lakshmipur, where he spoke about the policies and principles of BNP and Jamaat.

Rezaul, who is also the pir of Charmonai, said, “Jamaat says it wants to establish justice. What kind of justice? It will establish justice after holding secret meetings with America and India.

“We have observed Indian justice, we have observed American justice. We, the people of Bangladesh, don’t want to see that justice.”

Rezaul further said, “If they [BNP-Jamaat] come to power, based on what policies and principles will they run the country? Under the policies in which thousands of mothers were left bereaved, the country’s money was smuggled abroad to build Begumpura, people disappeared or were killed after taking to the streets.

“They are trying to run the country on those same principles. We cannot allow that to happen.”

He said the Jamaat-led electoral alliance has clearly stated that it would not run the country according to Sharia law and would instead govern under the existing system if voted to power. He also cited Jamaat candidate Krishna Nandi as saying that Jamaat is not an Islamic party.

An equity-based state has not been established under the existing system for 54 years, the CharmonaiPir said. “How will it [Jamaat] implement an equity-based state under the same system?” he questioned.

Urging voters to cast their ballots for the hand fan symbol on February 12, he asked the public to give IslamiAndolan an opportunity to run the country in line with Islamic principles, pledging peace, good governance, people’s rightful dues, and elimination of corruption.

Uttarakhand: FIR filed against Hindu men who objected to Muslim shopkeeper’s harassment

--------

The police in Uttarakhand have filed a case against two Hindu men who opposed the harassment of an elderly Muslim shopkeeper by alleged Bajrang Dal members in the PauriGarhwal district, The Hindu reported.

A mob had on January 26 arrived at the shop of Vakeel Ahmed, objecting to him using the word “Baba” in the name of his shop. Two Hindu men, a gym owner named Deepak Kumar and another person named Vijay Rawat, objected to the mob’s actions, after which they were asked not to intervene.

The FIR against Kumar and Rawat was filed on the basis of a complaint by two persons named Gaurav Kashyap and Kamal Pal, The Hindu reported. While Kashyap is reportedly a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Pal is a member of the Bajrang Dal.

Subsequently, a group of about 40 persons gathered near Kumar’s gym and shouted slogans against him, The Indian Express reported. The protestors also blocked a national highway.

The police filed a case against unidentified persons in connection with the protests, and filed an FIR against two named and several unidentified persons on the basis of a complaint by Ahmed.

The case filed against Kumar and Rawat is based on a complaint by the VHP and Bajrang Dal members that they stole their watches and money, and hurled casteist abuses at them, The Hindu reported.

The FIR filed on the basis of Ahmed’s complaint invokes provisions pertaining to trespassing, intentional insults to provoke breach of peace, criminal intimidation, and causing hurt.

In a video of the incident that was later widely shared on social media, Kumar is seen questioning the group on why other shops are allowed to use the word “Baba” but Ahmed’s shop is not, The Indian Express reported. He is also heard saying that the shop is over 30 years old and asking whether its name should now be changed.

When asked his name, Kumar replied, “My name is Mohammad Deepak.”

“I intended to convey that I was an Indian and that everyone is equal before the law,” Kumar told the newspaper.

Kumar subsequently posted a video on Instagram, in which he said: “I am neither a Hindu, neither a Muslim, neither a Sikh, nor a Christian. First and foremost, I am a human being. Because after I die, I have to answer to God and to humanity, not to any religion.”

He said that no one, whether a Hindu or a Muslim, should be targeted for their religion.

The filing of the FIR against Kumar and Rawat sparked criticism from several social media users, who said that Kumar was being targeted merely for speaking up for humanity and opposing the intimidation of a Muslim citizen.

Commenting on the matter, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that Kumar was fighting for the Constitution and humanity.

“The SanghParivar is deliberately spreading economic and social poison across the country so that India remains divided and a few individuals can continue to rule through fear,” Gandhi said in a social media post. “The BJP government in Uttarakhand is openly supporting anti-social forces that are engaged in intimidating and harassing ordinary citizens.”

Ex-terrorist who praised jihad as a 'compassionate act' set to be UK councillor

SHAUN WILSON

02 February 2026

SHAHID BUTT, 60, IS STANDING AS AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE IN BIRMINGHAM’S SPARKHILL WARD

TIKTOK / SHAHIDBUTT955

------------

A convicted terrorist standing as an independent councillor praised the "compassion" of those fighting for jihad, a resurfaced interview shows.

Shahid Butt is standing as an independent councillor in Birmingham's inner city Sparkhill ward in May's local elections.

The constituency has a 91 per cent ethnic minority population with around 70 per cent practicing Islam, The Mail on Sunday reports.

In 1999, Butt was sentenced to five years in prison in Yemen for terrorism after being convicted with five other UK nationals of plotting to blow up the British consulate, an Anglican church and a hotel in the city of Aden.

Since returning to the UK in 2003, Butt has worked with the Home Office's anti-terrorism Prevent strategy and spent over 20 years counselling young people away from extremism.

A 2024 interview on YouTube was unearthed in which Butt describes the "compassion" of those fighting for jihad.

He said: "How much more compassion can somebody show that they're willing to risk their life to go into a war zone and to fight for people who they don't even know?

"Somebody wants to go there and fight, let him fight, because he's doing it out of compassion."

In the same interview, Butt condemns Isis and says the terrorist group "hijacked" Islam.

More recently, Butt supported calls for protests against Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv ahead of their match against Aston Villa in Birmingham last November.

He urged "every local Muslim" to attend the rally and footage captured him telling the crowd: "Muslims are not pacifists… if somebody comes into your face, you knock his teeth out."

Although Butt instructed protesters not to bring weapons, fans of the Israeli football club were banned from the game due to safety concerns.

The Mail on Sunday reports that when asked about his interview concerning jihad, Mr Butt stated he was only "making a point" and that he had spent years stopping British Muslims going to Syria to join extremist groups.

He added: "I've met people who wanted to go and join Isis and talked them out of it."

Butt was also asked about another interview in which he quoted the Koran about not taking Christians or Jews as friends. He stated he was referencing the Koran and does not hate people from either group.

He said: "I work with Christians, I work with local churches I am not anti-Semitic as I believe Jews are my cousins."

However, Butt's comments have drawn strong criticism.

Lord Walney, a former government adviser on extremism, said: "It beggars belief that this man who was jailed for terrorism in Yemen and appears to justify Brits fighting jihad abroad could end up holding elected office in Britain."

Ghaffar Hussain, from anti-extremism group the Groundswell Project, added: "At a time when the social fabric is already frayed, we don't want people to express such bigoted views."

‘We’ll find out’: Trump responds to Khamenei’s warning

2 Feb, 2026

© Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP

----------

US President Donald Trump has said the world would soon “find out” whether Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was correct in warning that an American attack would ignite a regional war, adding that there is still time to make a deal.

In recent weeks, the United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East, deploying the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, additional guided-missile destroyers and advanced air defense systems in what Trump has described as a “massive and beautiful armada.”

Khamenei warned on Sunday that any military action against Iran would have far-reaching consequences across the Middle East, much bigger than after the US-Israeli attack last summer.

“They should know that if they start a war this time, it will be a regional war,” Khamenei said in a speech in Tehran marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He accused Washington of seeking to “devour” Iran and seize its oil and natural gas resources.

Asked by reporters about the warning, Trump dismissed the remarks but left the door open to both diplomacy and force.

“Of course he is going to say that,” Trump said. “Hopefully we’ll make a deal. If we don’t make a deal, then we’ll find out whether or not he was right.”

Tensions have remained high since US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last June and amid Washington’s promise to punish Iran for its crackdown on violent anti-government protests.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Iranian leaders over the unrest and has suggested that Iran needs “new leadership,” while also urging protesters to continue demonstrating and “take over” state institutions.

Khamenei, in his speech, characterized the protests as a foreign-backed plot, calling the unrest a “sedition” similar to past movements against the Islamic Republic. Iranian authorities have blamed the violence on “terrorists” supported by the US and Israel in order to justify a military intervention.

The head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, who held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Friday, said that progress was being made toward negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also indicated that diplomacy could resume, although no formal talks with Washington were currently planned.

Syria arrests group behind Mezzeh airport attacks, weapons traced to Hezbollah

February 01, 2026

Syrian authorities seized a number of drones the group was preparing to use in further operations. (SANA)

--------------

DAMASCUS: Syria said on Sunday it had detained a group behind recent rocket attacks on the ?Mezzeh military airport in Damascus, with investigators tracing the weapons to Iran-backed Hezbollah.

The interior ministry said security units arrested all members of the group, which it said had carried out several strikes on the airport in ?recent months, after ?surveillance of suspected launch ?sites ?in ?several ?areas of the capital.

The weapons used in the attacks originated from Lebanon’s Hezbollah, an ally of former President Bashar Assad that once had a large military presence across Syria supporting Assad’s army, ?the ministry said.

Hezbollah denied the allegations and ?said it had no ?activity or ties with ?any group inside Syria. Authorities said ?they also seized a number of drones the group was preparing to use in further operations.

The ministry said only that ?the detainees had links to unidentified “foreign entities,” without mentioning Hezbollah or Iran.

Reuters reported ?in November that Washington was planning to establish a military presence at an air base in Damascus to help enable a security pact that Washington is brokering between Syria and Israel. The government denied the report.

Security sources say Hezbollah left behind weapons stockpiles, including drones, in parts of Syria after withdrawing its ?forces following the collapse of Assad’s rule.

‘Saudi Arabia’s principled stance is a source of strength for the Palestinian cause,

KHALDON AZHARI

February 01, 2026

TOKYO: When US President Donald Trump unveiled the charter of his Board of Peace in the Swiss city of Davos, he launched a new and uncertain experiment in postwar governance for the Gaza Strip.

The board is intended to oversee the war-ravaged Palestinian territory’s transitional administration and reconstruction as a fragile ceasefire moves into its second phase. The announcement has prompted cautious reactions from Palestinian officials, who say any plan imposed without Palestinian leadership risks failure.

Speaking to Arab News, Palestinian Authority Ambassador to Japan Waleed Ali Siam said international initiatives for Gaza and the West Bank must prioritize Palestinian rights, international law and a clear path to an independent Palestinian state.

“Achieving sustainable peace will be difficult without direct and active Palestinian involvement and a political horizon,” Siam said. “The reconstruction of Gaza must be underpinned by Palestinian representation, and it should be clearly linked to our political aspirations for statehood.”

He added: “We require reconstruction that holds true significance, not mere temporary measures or dreams of resorts.”

Despite a US-brokered truce entering its second phase, sporadic violence in Gaza has continued, with both Israel and Hamas accusing each other of violating the agreement.

The Board of Peace is an international body chaired by Trump. Its charter was formally ratified on Jan. 22 at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos.

It was established under UN Security Council Resolution 2803 to oversee Gaza’s transitional governance, demilitarization and reconstruction following a US-brokered ceasefire tied to a 20-point peace plan introduced in 2025.

Several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Bahrain, are among the board’s founding members.

Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for the initiative on Jan. 27, describing it as a transitional mechanism to help end the conflict and facilitate Gaza’s rebuilding.

Siam described Saudi Arabia’s role as “critically important in both Gaza and the West Bank.”

“We deeply appreciate that Saudi Arabia has consistently provided humanitarian and diplomatic support to our people and the legitimate aspirations of our nation since the onset of the war,” he said.

Since early January, Saudi Arabia has intensified air, sea and land relief routes to Gaza through the Saudi Popular Campaign to Aid the Palestinian People, responding to the worsening humanitarian crisis.

Saudi Arabia has established an air and sea “bridge” through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, delivering aid via 77 aircraft and eight ships carrying more than 7,699 tons of food, medical supplies and shelter materials, according to official figures.

Siam said Saudi Arabia’s longstanding stance against normalization without Palestinian statehood has become “a key pillar of the Palestinian diplomatic pathway.”

The Saudi leadership has “reaffirmed that no normalization will occur without a Palestinian state,” he said.

“This emphasizes that true regional stability and normalization are closely linked to the realization of Palestinian statehood.”

Indeed, Saudi Arabia has repeatedly rejected normalization with Israel without a Palestinian state since October 2023, when Israeli launched its military onslaught in Gaza following a deadly Hamas-led attack.

Saudi Arabia suspended normalization talks soon afterward, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman later stating clearly that any resumption of ties was contingent on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital

Most recently, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan reiterated on Jan. 28 that the Kingdom would not establish relations with Israel before Palestinian statehood.

Siam said the Palestinian leadership sees Saudi Arabia as “a leading country in the Arab and Islamic worlds, representing a strong shield for the legitimate rights of Palestinians.”

The Kingdom’s “historically principled position has always been a source of strength for the Palestinian cause, as it rejected settlements at the expense of the historical rights of the Palestinian people,” he added.

“Saudi Arabia has become a regional, global, and religious center for protecting the historical rights of Palestinians, reflecting the depth of the support we cherish in our struggle to restore our rights.”

Riyadh took a prominent diplomatic role in advancing a two-state solution during the conflict and in postwar planning.

In August last year, Prince Faisal bin Farhan conducted urgent diplomatic phone calls with counterparts in Turkiye, Egypt, France, Germany and the EU, urging international action to halt Israel’s Gaza operations.

In July, the Kingdom co-hosted a conference with France in New York aimed at rallying support for Palestinian state recognition and a negotiated two-state framework. Saudi Arabia later endorsed Trump’s phase-one ceasefire in late 2025, backing the multilateral disarmament of Hamas and strengthening of the Palestinian Authority.

Siam said that the top priority in Gaza today remains “an urgent and permanent ceasefire.”

“Israel has already occupied over 65 percent of Gaza and continues to destroy and kill,” he said. “The blockage of humanitarian aid and refusal to allow the opening of borders at Rafah endanger thousands of households.”

On Saturday, the Israeli military launched air strikes reportedly killing 32 people including children in Gaza, claiming that it was responding to a Hamas ceasefire violation.

Since October 2023, Israeli bombardment and raids have killed more than 71,600 Palestinians in Gaza, according to local health authorities.

“The humanitarian situation and crisis in Gaza is far from being over,” Olga Cherevko from UN aid coordination office OCHA said on Jan. 17. “For the Palestinians in Gaza, their lives continue to be defined by displacement, trauma, uncertainty, and deprivation.”

She added that severe winter storms have compounded suffering, destroying shelters and contributing to civilian deaths, including vulnerable children.

On Jan. 30, Israeli authorities said the Rafah Crossing would reopen in both directions on Feb. 1 for “a limited movement of people,” subject to Israeli security clearance, according to OCHA.

Siam stressed the need for “the complete withdrawal of occupying Israeli forces to ensure sustainable humanitarian aid and the protection of all Palestinian citizens.”

Last May, Israeli forces declared roughly 70 percent of Gaza either a military “red zone” or under evacuation orders, forcing hundreds of thousands into increasingly confined areas, according to the UN.

While the Israeli military says such orders allow civilians to flee fighting, Palestinians reportedly say they often are forced to evacuate under fire.

Conditions in the West Bank are also worsening. Rights groups report record levels of settler violence over the past year, along with expanded Israeli raids, in what they warn amounts to de facto annexation.

“The situation in the West Bank is also perilous,” Siam said. “Quiet annexation is occurring in the West Bank, with the expansion of settlements, forced migration, house demolitions, and strict movement restrictions systematically undermining the viability of a genuine Palestinian state.”

He warned that rhetoric from Israeli leaders denying Palestinian statehood is gaining international acceptance.

“The narrative from Israeli leaders that ‘there is no Palestinian state, an independent Palestinian state does not exist; Palestinians should leave’ is dangerous and the world seems to be accepting this narrative,” he said.

He added: “It sidelines the Palestinian Authority in the future of Gaza. We are concerned, and the Palestinian Authority and the PLO represent the legitimate representation of the Palestinian people and play an essential role in a reliable unified future for Gaza.”

Siam said growing international recognition of Palestinian statehood has helped build momentum for a two-state solution. Last year, several Western governments — including the UK, France, Canada, Australia and Portugal — announced formal recognition of Palestine.

But he cautioned that recognition alone is insufficient.

“To generate real momentum, concrete actions are required to end Israeli military occupation, stop the expansion of illegal settlements, and achieve a political resolution,” he said.

“What is needed is action based on international law, not proposals labeled X, Y and Z. International law should be enforced, and it should not be conducted under attempts to alter international laws on someone's desk by the law of the jungle.

“Justice and peace in Gaza must mean the end of the Israeli occupation within a year, complete reconstruction, accountability for Israeli crimes, and for all residents to live in dignity and safety within a free and independent state.”

He added: “A clearly internationally guaranteed political horizon is essential. What we seek is a sincere and reversible pathway to end the occupation and establish our own independent sovereign state.”

Turning to Japan, Siam expressed gratitude for Tokyo’s continued support for Palestinian development and Gaza reconstruction.

“We are grateful for the Japanese people and government for continuing supporting on the Palestinian development and also being part of the reconstruction of Gaza,” he said.

Japan has provided humanitarian assistance through multilateral agencies, including the World Food Programme and the World Health Organization, addressing food insecurity, healthcare, and basic services.

Siam urged Japan not to deepen defense ties with Israel. “We call on Japan also not to reward Israel by signing contracts from the private sector or governmental, contracts on buying weapons from Israel,” he said.

“Buying weapons from Israel helps Israel to continue its genocide in Gaza.”

Siam added: “Any country that supports Israel economically or militarily is complicit, unfortunately complicit, in the genocide in Gaza. Knowing this, Japan (should) take a firm decision not to buy any military equipment from Israel.”

Why Nigeria’s Partnership WithTurkiye Will Not Affect Its Relationship With United States – Defence Minister

February 2, 2026

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has dismissed claims that Nigeria’s partnership with Türkiye could affect its relationship with the United States.

There have been concerns that Nigeria’s defence agreements with Türkiye could strain ties with Washington, especially amid ongoing US military support to Nigeria.

However, speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Christopher stated that Nigeria is allowed to work with multiple international partners in its national interest.

“Nigeria is now a non-aligned nation, which means we can partner with everybody. Once you are a friendly nation to us, we are friends, and we can relate directly.

“That is why we can deal with China, Türkiye, and the United States. The idea of isolating yourself with just one group is not the best for anybody,” he said.

The defence minister explained that maintaining diverse defence partnerships gives Nigeria strategic leverage, citing Egypt as an example of a country that benefits from cooperation with multiple global powers.

“You can see in Egypt that they have support from several countries. It is important to keep that leverage so you can continue to move forward,” he added.

The minister also confirmed that military equipment and technology from Türkiye would begin arriving in Nigeria soon, following the signing of defence agreements between both countries.

“Very soon. Some of them are already ready. We are working on the paperwork now. The signing has been done, and we will proceed with discussions, training, and capacity building.

“Some of these are quick interventions that will come in, and we are going to deploy them as fast as possible,” he said.

The former Chief of Defence Staff said the agreements go beyond procurement, focusing heavily on military education, joint training, and defence industry cooperation.

“What we signed is essentially putting pen to paper on our friendship and military cooperation. It involves military education, exchange of officers, and training of troops. They will send their personnel here, and we will send ours there,” he explained.

The General noted that Nigeria is particularly interested in replicating Türkiye’s defence production model, adding that the partnership would allow technology transfer and local manufacturing.

“On defence industry cooperation, we have not done much in production before, and we want to replicate what they have achieved.

“They can come here, produce the same standard equipment they have in Türkiye, transfer the technology, and make it Nigerian-owned,” he said.

The defence minister said the collaboration would strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture, enhance defence capabilities, and improve access to modern military technology.

Nigeria and Türkiye signed nine bilateral agreements on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in Ankara during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit.

Why Malaysia, not Indonesia, is the strategic first stop for China’s Muslim F&B entrepreneurs

By Kenneth Tee

02 Feb 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 — When Chinese Muslim entrepreneurs look beyond China’s borders, Malaysia often tops the list — not for its market size, but for something far more practical: a shared language, a multicultural society and a business environment they already understand.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many of these entrepreneurs have come to see Malaysia not as an end point but as a launchpad — a base to build systems, talent and products before expanding deeper into the region.

For many, Malaysia’s population of over 34 million — including some 20 million Muslims and more than six million ethnic Chinese — makes it a natural starting point.

“Chinese Muslims typically speak Mandarin but are generally less proficient in English. This makes Malaysia a comparatively easy place for them to do business.

“Although they are Chinese Muslims operating halal restaurants, Malaysia’s multicultural environment allows them to handle company registration, secretarial matters and staff recruitment in Mandarin.

“Therefore, language accessibility is a crucial factor,” Malaysia Chinese Restaurant Association president Gao Haoyun told Malay Mail in a recent interview.

Malaysia as post-pandemic launchpad

Gao said Malaysia’s business-friendly policies and strong bilateral ties with China had also encouraged Chinese Muslim businesses to expand overseas in the post-pandemic period.

China’s food and beverage sector was hit especially hard by prolonged lockdowns, which disrupted dine-in operations and supply chains.

Competition intensified during the uneven recovery, leaving many halal-focused operators — mainly from northern and western China — searching for overseas markets to diversify risk and reignite growth.

Where Chinese Muslim brands cluster in Malaysia

In Malaysia, Gao noted, Chinese cuisine — including Chinese Muslim offerings — is concentrated in three key urban hubs: George Town, Johor Bahru and the Klang Valley.

“These three cities are strategic centres for the development of Chinese brands, not necessarily halal-focused,” he said.

The Klang Valley, he added, is experiencing the fastest growth and is the most competitive market, driven by its large population and the rapid rise in outlets.

“Nationwide, there are roughly 20,000 to 25,000 Chinese food and beverage outlets, with the Klang Valley alone accounting for around 60 per cent of them — about 11,000 to 12,000 outlets,” he said.

Not Indonesia, despite its huge Muslim population

Although Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population, Gao said Malaysia has consistently been the “first choice” for Chinese Muslim entrepreneurs — both historically and today.

“As for other Muslim-majority South-east Asian countries such as Indonesia, even though Indonesia has a much larger population than Malaysia, it is not usually the first option, largely due to political considerations.

“In addition, the Chinese community in Indonesia generally has weaker Mandarin proficiency.

“By contrast, company registration, taxation and regulatory compliance in Indonesia can be challenging for mainland Chinese entrepreneurs who are unfamiliar with English and lack local communication channels — a difficulty closely tied to national policy and regulatory frameworks,” he said.

Gao also cited Malaysia’s political stability, noting that ethnic Chinese are represented at all levels of government — from ministers to lawmakers — and that the country has not experienced incidents like the anti-Chinese unrest seen in Indonesia, including the May 1998 riots.

The 1998 riots erupted during the final days of President Suharto’s regime amid political instability and economic crisis, with widespread looting, arson and targeted attacks disproportionately affecting ethnic Chinese communities in Jakarta and other major cities.

Malaysia first, Indonesia next

Still, Gao said these challenges do not rule out Indonesia entirely.

“Many Chinese Muslim businesses first establish their operational ‘building blocks’ in Malaysia — including products, personnel and systems — before expanding into Indonesia.

“With the help of multilingual Malaysian Chinese partners, who often speak three or four languages, entering the Indonesian market becomes far smoother,” he said.

Ultimately, Gao said the hesitation around Malaysia’s neighbour stems largely from political and language-related challenges — factors where Malaysia continues to enjoy a clear edge.

UNODC Report Warns of Rising Synthetic Drug Use in Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

February 1, 2026

A new UNODC report says drug use in Afghanistan remains dominated by traditional substances, while synthetic and pharmaceutical drug misuse is rising, straining households nationwide.

A new UNODC report released on February 1, 2026, finds drug use in Afghanistan remains dominated by cannabis and opium, while synthetic drugs and misused pharmaceuticals are steadily increasing.

Survey results show cannabis and opium remain most common, while methamphetamine and so-called “Tablet K” are increasingly reported in communities across the country.

Researchers say poverty, unemployment, illness, and psychological distress are major drivers of drug dependence, with drug costs often exceeding a worker’s daily income.

The report also highlights health risks, noting many drug users lack access to treatment and sterile equipment, while women face greater barriers to receiving care.

UNODC and UNDP officials say the findings will guide future policies focused on treatment, harm reduction, and addressing economic conditions fueling drug use.

Previous UNODC surveys showed rising injection drug use and widespread needle sharing, raising concerns about disease transmission and gaps in harm-reduction coverage.

Facility mapping also revealed treatment services remain limited, unevenly distributed, and mostly focused on men, leaving women and rural populations underserved.

Experts stress that tackling drug use requires linking treatment with mental health support, employment opportunities, and social protection to reduce dependence pressures.

UN agencies also call for expanding voluntary, rights-based treatment and reducing stigma so more people seek help without fear of discrimination.

The report concludes that prevention, accessible treatment, and economic support remain essential to curb drug misuse and protect Afghanistan’s communities from long-term social and health damage.

TAPI Project Marks New Era of Regional Cooperation, Beradar Says

February 2, 2026

KABUL: Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani BeradarAkhund, said the launch of the TAPI project has opened a new chapter in regional cooperation, during his meeting with Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Rashid Meredov, in Herat on Sunday.

Senior Afghan and Turkmen officials, including Afghanistan’s Ministers of Mines and Petroleum, Water and Energy, and Turkmenistan’s Minister of Transport and Railway, along with other representatives from both sides, attended the meeting, the office of the Deputy PM said in a statement.

Beradar stated that the TAPI project is creating new opportunities for enhanced ties between Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and countries in the wider region.

He noted that Saudi Arabia’s Delta International Company has also expressed interest in investing in various aspects of the project, including purchasing gas, expanding Turkmenistan’s major gas block, constructing segments of the pipeline through Afghanistan, and supporting related energy infrastructure.

He also called on Turkmenistan to clarify its position regarding the Torghundi–Herat railway project, highlighting that Kazakhstan has shown strong interest in its implementation.

The deputy PM reaffirmed Afghanistan’s readiness to finalize the roadmap for the TAP project and stressed the importance of creating job opportunities for Afghans within regional initiatives.

Meanwhile, Meredov thanked the Islamic Emirate for creating favorable conditions for implementing TAPI and said that by the end of the current year, work on the project will reach Herat city.

Strengthening Border Security Between Afghanistan and Tajikistan

February 2, 2026

Afghanistan and Tajikistan are neighboring countries with longstanding historical, cultural, and social connections. As close neighbors, both countries share a common interest in maintaining stability, security, and peaceful cooperation along their shared border. Friendly relations based on mutual respect and good neighborliness are essential not only for bilateral ties but also for broader regional peace and development.

Recent reports of an incident along the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border have once again drawn attention to the challenges associated with border security. However, such incidents should be viewed in their proper context. As acknowledged by officials and analysts, most border-related incidents are linked to illegal activities such as smuggling and cross-border crime, rather than political or state-level disagreements. Criminal networks often seek to exploit difficult terrain and remote border areas, creating situations that may lead to misunderstandings between neighboring countries.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has clearly stated that Afghan and Tajik border forces remain in coordination and communication. The recent incident was shared through official channels, and assurances were given that necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. This demonstrates the Islamic Emirate’s commitment to resolving border issues through cooperation, dialogue, and responsible engagement with neighboring states.

Border security is a shared responsibility that requires joint efforts. Strengthening intelligence cooperation, enhancing coordination between border forces, and adopting preventive measures can significantly reduce the activities of smugglers and other illegal groups. Afghanistan has repeatedly emphasized that its territory will not be allowed to be used against any neighboring country, reflecting a policy based on respect for sovereignty and non-interference.

At the same time, it is important to prevent isolated incidents from affecting overall bilateral relations. Misunderstandings can be avoided through continuous diplomatic engagement and transparent communication. History has shown that hostile narratives and exaggerated interpretations of border incidents only serve the interests of those who wish to undermine regional stability.

Jamaatameer’s X account was not hacked: Tarique

2 Feb 2026

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman today alleged that the X (formerly Twitter) account of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman was not hacked, citing expert opinions that such an account cannot be compromised in the manner claimed.

Pointing to Jamaat, Tarique alleged that the party was spreading false information to serve its political interests ahead of the election.

“They have only one identity, they are liars,” he said while addressing a rally in Khulna.

Referring to recent controversial remarks posted from the account, Tarique said the “posts” drew strong criticism, particularly from women, after which Jamaat claimed the account had been hacked.

“But experts have clearly said in many ways that an account cannot be hacked like this,” he added.

Tarique further alleged that a senior leader of a political party was misleading the public before the election.

“ Even the party is lying, saying their ID was hacked, when in fact it was not,” he said.

He claimed such statements were made for personal and political gain.

“Those who lie in front of crores of people, who lie even in front of experts, can never be people who truly care about the country,” Tarique said, adding that such leaders prioritise their own interests over public welfare.

Tarique came up with the remarks after a comment against women allegedly made from the verified X account of Shafiqur triggered widespread debate and criticism both online and offline.

People from different walks of life, particularly women, strongly criticised the Jamaatameer over the alleged comment and held protests at various places across the country, including the Dhaka University campus.

The party, meanwhile, claimed the account was hacked by a ‘special group’ and filed a GD at Hatirjheel Police Station.

‘Miyas will face trouble as long as I am CM’: HimantaSarma unmoved by backlash

Feb 1, 2026

NEW DELHI: Despite the backlash over his remarks on Assam's "Miyas," chief minister HimantaBiswaSarma on Sunday warned that they would face "trouble" as long as he remains in power.

He reiterated that the "Miyas" should continue to face difficulties in order to leave the poll-bound state.

The BJP leader told reporters on the sidelines of a government programme in Goalpara, “If I remain in Assam, they will face troubles. They can’t live in peace here. Only if we create difficulties for them will they leave.”Sarma described such people as “illegal Bangladeshis” and said they should not be allowed to work in the state.

Referring to an earlier comment about a “Miya” rickshaw-puller charging Rs 5 in fare and being paid Rs 4, the chief minister asked, “I had, in fact, spoken for their benefit. By law, they cannot work here. Citizens of a country can work in their own land. How can those from Bangladesh work?”

The term “Miya” is considered pejorative and is used for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam, whom non-Bengali speakers often identify as Bangladeshi immigrants.

Sarma added that “if they cannot accept me speaking for their benefit, then I have to work against them.”

He claimed that “Bangladeshi Muslims” could constitute 40% of Assam’s population in the next Census. He also accused them of encroaching on satras (Vaishnavite seats of learning), land, and engaging in “love jihad” and “fertiliser jihad.”

Opposition parties have condemned Sarma’s remarks as “hate speech” and demanded action.

Assam is scheduled to hold assembly elections in March–April for all 126 constituencies. The BJP has been in power in the state since 2016, marking its first term.

ICC warns PCB on boycotting match against India in T20 World Cup asking to consider ‘long-term implications for cricket in its own country’

Feb 2, 2026

Hours after the Pakistan government announced that the cricket team of the country will not play against India in the upcoming T20 World Cup, the ICC has warned to reconsider the stance, making the board aware of the long-term implications they might face as a result of boycotting the high-profile fixture.

“The ICC hopes that the PCB will consider the significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country as this is likely to impact the global cricket ecosystem, which it is itself a member and beneficiary of,” read an ICC press release.

“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026; however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February against India,” said a post on X (Formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

However, ICC has started. There has been official confirmation with them on the matter: “This position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms per the event schedule,” a statement from ICC read.

“ICC tournaments are built on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness, and selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of the competitions. While the ICC respects the roles of governments in matters of national policy, this decision is not in the interest of the global game or the welfare of fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan,” it further added.

Ever since Bangladesh put in a request to move its matches from India to Sri Lanka citing security concerns and failed, Pakistan had been protesting against the decision. In a show of support to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, they voted in favour of their request in the ICC board meeting and their chairman Mohsin Naqvi even threatened to boycott the tournament. When Bangladesh refused to play their matches in India, they were eventually replaced by Scotland for the tournament.

Naqvi had earlier said that a decision on Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup will be taken on Monday.

Two killed in clash between rival groups during religious procession in Uttrakhand'sRoorkee

Narendra Sethi

02 Feb 2026

DEHRADUN: Tension gripped the Bhagwanpur area of Roorkee in Haridwar district after a violent clash between two rival groups during a religious procession left two men dead and three others seriously injured on Sunday.

The incident occurred during a bhandara (community feast) organised as part of the RavidasShobhayatra in Binarasi village. Following the violence, heavy police deployment from multiple stations, including Jhabrera, Roorkee and Kaliyar, was carried out to prevent further escalation.

According to police sources, the confrontation began around 5 pm over a long-standing rivalry and a dispute linked to “social prestige”. What started as a heated argument quickly escalated into a violent brawl, during which firearms were allegedly used.

Anand (28), a resident of Binarasi village, died on the spot after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest. Later the same night, police recovered the body of Mangeram, a member of the opposing faction, from a nearby field. Preliminary reports suggest that Mangeram was beaten to death.

The killings sparked protests by the victims’ families and local residents, who blocked the road by placing Anand’s body on it and refused to allow a post-mortem examination until the accused were arrested. Senior police officials eventually pacified the crowd, after which the bodies were sent for autopsy late in the evening.

“A heavy police force has been deployed in the village to maintain law and order,” said Shekhar Chandra Suyal, Superintendent of Police (Rural). “Three others, Vikas, Gagan and Yogendra, sustained pellet injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital. A detailed investigation is under way.”

In the aftermath, incidents of vandalism were reported, with angry mobs targeting houses belonging to the rival group and damaging at least ten two-wheelers. There was also an attempted arson, with miscreants trying to set fire to a stack of fodder. However, locals intervened before the fire could spread.

The local intelligence unit and district police remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent retaliatory violence. While no arrests have been officially confirmed so far, several suspects are reportedly under investigation.

Kashmiri shawl seller assaulted in Himachal days after Uttarakhand attack

FayazWani

01 Feb 2026

SRINAGAR: Days after two Kashmiri shawl seller brothers were brutally assaulted in Uttarakhand, a fresh case of alleged harassment and assault involving a Kashmiri shawl seller has been reported from Congress ruled Himachal Pradesh.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Students Association national convenor Nasir Khuehami, a Kashmiri shawl seller identified as Mohammad Ramzan was harassed and later assaulted by a right wing activist, Surjeet Rajput Guleria, in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

Ramzan, Nasir said, was forced to prove his identity, threatened and given an ultimatum to leave the state, while his shawl bundles were checked.

“He was mockingly accused of carrying an AK 47 instead of Kashmiri shawls,” Nasir said.

“This is the fourth such incident in Himachal Pradesh in the recent past, reflecting a deeply disturbing and recurring pattern of targeted harassment against Kashmiri traders,” he said.

“The same individual (Guleria) is reported to have harassed and assaulted three other Kashmiri shawl sellers last month as well,” Nasir added.

He alleged that Kashmiri traders in the area have been intimidated, threatened and prevented from selling their shawls, and warned to vacate the place.

“For decades, these shawl sellers have contributed significantly to the local economy and have become an integral part of the social and cultural fabric of the region. Today, however, they are being pushed into insecurity and fear, simply because of their identity,” Nasir said.

The assault on the Kashmiri shawl seller in Himachal Pradesh comes days after the January 28 attack on two young Kashmiri brothers selling shawls in the Vikas Nagar area of Uttarakhand.

One of the brothers, identified as Mohammad Tabish, was hit on the head with iron rods, causing severe head injuries and a fracture to his arm.

The assault on the young Kashmiri shawl sellers in Uttarakhand had triggered outrage in the Valley, prompting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take up the issue with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

He urged him to take strict action against those involved, ensure the registration of an FIR and guarantee the safety of Jammu and Kashmir residents.

The Uttarakhand Police registered an FIR against the accused, Sanjay Yadav, and another person under Sections 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The main accused was arrested.

Kashmiri shawl sellers and students have reportedly faced harassment and assaults in Uttarakhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and other states in recent months.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has written to the Union Home Minister seeking urgent intervention to stop intimidation, harassment and targeted violence against Kashmiri students and shawl vendors.

The repeated incidents have created fear and uncertainty among Kashmiri students and traders pursuing education and earning their livelihood outside Jammu and Kashmir.

Members of the Yamunotri temple committee have joined other Hindu religious panels in Uttarakhand in banning the entry of non-Hindus on their premises.

"We have written to the state government about our resolution and asked them to ensure adequate security here in April at the time of the beginning of Char DhamYatra," PurushottamUniyal, spokesperson of the Yamunotri temple committee, told reporters in Uttarkashi on Sunday.

The yatra is held between April and October.

"Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains are not considered non-Hindus. Thus, their entry is welcome here," he said, adding: "Let me emphasise that we have already banned the entry of others barring Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains and hope the others will respect our emotions."

The members of the temple committees of Gangotri (Uttarkashi district), Kedarnath and Badrinath, and the management committee of the HaridwarMela had passed similar resolutions last week and forwarded them to the state government.

Transition to popular governance strengthened public faith in democratic institutions in J&K: LG Sinha

FayazWani

02 Feb 2026

SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in his address to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly at the start of the Budget session on Monday, said the transition to popular governance has strengthened public faith in democratic institutions. He said the Budget session “reaffirms our commitment to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir”.

The month-long Budget session of the J&K Assembly began in Jammu with the address by the Lieutenant Governor.

“This session holds special significance, as it offers an opportunity to reflect on our collective journey, review our achievements, and chart a clear roadmap for the future. It also provides a moment to reaffirm our shared commitment to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Sinha said.

He said the past year marked a significant milestone in the democratic journey of Jammu and Kashmir with the formation of an elected government after a gap of several years. This transition to popular governance, he added, has strengthened public faith in democratic institutions.

The first election to the J&K Union Territory Assembly was held in September–October 2024 following the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019. The National Conference won the elections, and Omar Abdullah formed the government.

“My Government has focused on restoring participatory governance, rebuilding public confidence, and ensuring that the voice of every region and community finds expression in policymaking,” Sinha said.

However, there was no mention of the restoration of statehood in the Lieutenant Governor’s address. Since assuming office, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been pressing for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the floor of Parliament and during election rallies in the Union Territory.

“As we move forward, my Government remains firmly committed to further strengthening democratic institutions. Timely conduct of elections to local bodies, continued enhancement of grievance redressal mechanisms, and deeper integration of digital governance will reinforce transparency, accountability and participatory governance,” Sinha said.

He said Jammu and Kashmir was undergoing a major industrial transformation. “Since 2020, 2,227 organised industrial units, with an investment of 15,940 crore, have commenced production, generating employment for over 73,800 persons. Another 1,028 units, involving a proposed investment of 27,613 crore, are under implementation, of which 396 units are expected to commence production by March 2026,” he said.

Referring to the tourism sector, which was badly hit after the April 22, 2025 terror attack at Pahalgam in which 25 tourists and a local pony handler were killed, Sinha said tourism continued to be a vital pillar of the Union Territory’s economy.

“Despite challenges arising from security-related incidents and natural calamities, the Union Territory recorded 1.78 crore tourist visits in 2025,” he said, adding that tourism had been accorded industry status to attract investment and generate employment.

He said the first-ever Chrysanthemum Garden, Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood, was opened to tourists in October 2025. “With more than 50 vibrant varieties, this garden is a strategic cornerstone in our mission to transform Kashmir into a year-round destination.”

“Just as the Tulip Garden defines our spring, Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood is set to become the definitive icon of our autumn, inviting the world to witness the beauty of Kashmir during the autumn season. This will help attract tourists during the lean season,” he said.

Recognising tourism as the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, Sinha said the government had undertaken confidence-building measures, improved facilitation, and strengthened coordination with stakeholders.

“Special efforts were made to revive pilgrim tourism in Jammu, adventure tourism in Kashmir, and eco-tourism in tribal and border areas, ensuring equitable regional growth,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor announced that, on the recommendation of the J&K Government, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved a project to provide 200 free units of electricity to 2.23 lakh Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families under the PM Surya GharMuftBijliYojana – Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model. Implementation of the project will begin soon.

He also said the government would introduce a major project for the sustainable development of emerging tourist destinations, with investment from both government funding and private sector participation. “This will generate employment opportunities and ensure that the benefits of tourism reach remote and unexplored areas,” he said, adding that the programme would focus on developing new destinations, promoting homestays, rural and border tourism, and encouraging community participation.

Budget 2026 raises Intelligence Bureau outlay after Pahalgam, Red Fort terror attacks

Imran Ahmed Siddiqui

02.02.26

The Centre has increased the budgetary allocation for the Intelligence Bureau, the country's internal spy agency, from 4,159 crore in the budget last year to 6,782 crore in 2026-27.

The bureau, which handles security challenges from terrorism, internal and cyber threats, had come under flak over its alleged intelligence failure before the Pahalgam and Red Fort terror attacks last year.

Out of the total 6,782 crore, a large chunk of 2,549 crore has been allocated as capital expenditure, a record hike from the 257 crore in the revised allocation under the same category last year.

Sources said the unprecedented allocation in capital expenditure was aimed at improving surveillance systems, cyber intelligence capabilities and technology infrastructure. The allocation for the IB is to meet administrative expenses, including collecting and analysing information on internal threats, terrorist activities, and security risks.

The home ministry has seen an increase of 9 per cent in the total allocation in the 2026-27 budget. The IB and the central armed police forces report to the home ministry.

East Yorkshire ‘Anglo Jihadi’ who was planning terror attack is jailed

Mark Page

01 Feb 2026

A self-styled "Anglo Jihadi" from East Yorkshire has been handed a life sentence after he was found guilty of planning a terror attack. Jordan Richardson was aiming to carry out an "atrocity" with the South Yorkshire shopping centre Meadowhall among his possible targets, a court heard.

The 21-year-old, who "regularly expressed a wish to kill Jews" and joked about going into a synagogue in a suicide vest, was arrested in December 2024 on his way to work in Howden. He had instructions on how to make mustard gas and a note which said: "Throw all grenades into crowd; Shoot bystanders; Stab anyone who comes close; Do not get taken alive."

Leeds Crown Court jurors heard a crossbow was found at Richardson's home, and his internet history showed an "affiliation with extreme Islamist ideology". A search of his online activity showed that his Instagram accounts included one with the handle "Anglo Jihadi", and his possible targets.

On Thursday, Richardson was handed a discretionary life sentence and told he must serve a minimum term of 16 years by a judge who said he had "a genuine ideological commitment to violent jihad". Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb told the defendant: "The nature, frequency and persistence of your posts make me sure you intended to use the crossbow and knife in a terrorist attack in the United Kingdom.

"But for the disruptive actions of counter terrorism police you would have committed that attack within weeks." The judge said: "You had a genuine ideological commitment to violent jihad... Your firm intention was to carry out violent action to further the aims of Islamic State, knowing this would lead to the deaths of others."

The court heard Richardson had expressed allegiance to Islamic State in prison, with Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb saying he was "not on the path to deradicalisation". The judge said Richardson started taking an interest in Islam after conversations at the gym where he worked, and converted after splitting up with his girlfriend. He started attending a mosque in Goole on a weekly basis.

His online searches included: "Does Isis recruit on Instagram?" Richardson, of Oliver Close, Howden, told the trial his behaviour was a form of fantasy and escape from the rest of his life, where he felt depressed and isolated, and that he was "role playing the character of an extremist".

But prosecutors said he "wasn't just an online fantasist" but an extremist who was "going to put his jihadi fantasies into reality". In November, Richardson was found guilty of preparing for acts of terrorism, two counts of collecting information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, and three counts of distributing terrorist publications.

Opening the trial, prosecutor Katherine Robinson said: "(Richardson) regularly expressed a wish to kill Jews, for example using the terminology – the pillagers, the big noses and the money. He suggested going to Palestine to fight Jews and he searched for how to volunteer for Hamas from the UK and how to get to Palestine.

"He made a joke about going into a synagogue in a suicide vest." Ms Robinson said Richardson "stated that he converted to Islam the day after Ramadan" and expressed his desires "to conduct jihad and kill infidels".

Jurors were shown a video Richardson posted on Instagram of Meadowhall shopping centre, followed by a brightly coloured clip featuring pictures of rainbows and dolphins, overlaid with the words: "How life feels when you finally give up and just start killing people brutally." Other video clips included Richardson smashing a statue of Buddha in a garden, describing how it was a "polytheistic idol", and also of him firing a crossbow.

The prosecutor said the crossbow found in his home was bought online by the defendant for £35.95, along with a pack of 10 crossbow bolts. She said the recipe for mustard gas "has been assessed as viable and potentially fatal for anyone exposed to it" and that this substance would be capable of being loaded into a grenade.

German calls for nukes are ‘madness’ – veteran politician

2 Feb, 2026

German politician SahraWagenknecht has condemned growing calls for her country to take part in nuclear rearmament, calling the proposals “madness.”

Germany is prohibited from developing nuclear weapons under international law, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Two Plus Four Treaty, the 1990 agreement that enabled German reunification in return for limits on its military capabilities, including renouncing nuclear arms.

Earlier this month, Kay Gottschalk, the parliamentary finance policy spokesman for Alternative for Germany (AfD), said that Berlin “needs nuclear weapons,” arguing that Europe can no longer rely on US protection.

In a post on X on Sunday, Wagenknecht, who previously served in the Bundestag and founded the BundnisSahraWagenknecht party, said that “the cross-front for the nuclear rearmament of Germany is growing.”

“Following advances by AfD politicians for a German nuclear weapon, CDU warmonger RoderichKiesewetter and former Green foreign minister Joschka Fischer are now also calling for Germany’s participation in a European atomic bomb. What madness,” she wrote.

Fischer said last week that Europe must pursue nuclear rearmament, with Germany taking the lead. Kiesewetter proposed in turn that Berlin could instead “contribute financially” to a European nuclear umbrella that Finland, Sweden, and Poland are planning to develop.

Wagenknecht argued that Germany’s proposed acquisition of nuclear weapons would constitute a serious violation of Berlin’s international legal obligations and would undermine the global system of nuclear arms control. She also warned that US intermediate-range missiles planned for deployment in the Federal Republic, which are capable of striking targets deep inside Russian territory, pose a major security risk.

“The missile deployment undermines the nuclear balance between the US and Russia and massively increases the danger for Germany to become the target of a nuclear strike in the event of conflict,” she wrote.

Instead, Wagenknecht called for Germany to lead a diplomatic disarmament initiative and demanded the withdrawal of US nuclear weapons from German territory. “US atomic bombs out! No US intermediate-range missiles in Germany!” she added.

Ukrainian drone strike kills woman and child near Mariupol – authorities

2 Feb, 2026

Two civilians, including a young child, have been killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on a settlement near the city of Mariupol, the head of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, announced on Sunday.

He said the attack took place in the village of Sartana, located on the outskirts of Mariupol, which was liberated from Ukrainian troops after a fierce battle in 2022.

“A woman born in 1991 and a boy born in 2020 were killed in the attack by Ukrainian strike drones,” Pushilin wrote on Telegram, expressing condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

He added that another seven-year-old boy was injured and three residential buildings were destroyed in the strike.

Russia has accused Ukraine of increasingly targeting civilians in its attacks. As many as 45 people, including three minors, were killed in Ukrainian strikes in Russia over the holiday season from January 1 to 11, according to Moscow.

Moscow says Kiev is attacking civilians because it cannot halt Russian advances on the battlefield. Ukrainian officials claim that inflicting sufficient economic damage will force Russia to abandon its objectives in the four-year conflict.

In response, the Russian military has targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure that it says supports kamikaze drone production for long-range strikes.

Several major Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kiev, are currently facing severe power shortages as grid deterioration coincides with a cold snap. Kiev Mayor VitalyKlitschko has urged residents to evacuate if possible.

The DPR, along with the neighboring Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), seceded from Ukraine following a Western-backed coup in Kiev in 2014. The two territories, along with the regions of Zaporozhye and Kherson, joined Russia following referendums in September 2022.

French tech giant Capgemini to sell US subsidiary working for ICE

02 Feb 2026

Jack Burgess

French technology giant Capgemini has announced it will sell its US subsidiary after its work locating people for immigration enforcement agency ICE sparked outrage.

Capgemini has come under pressure from French lawmakers over a contract its subsidiary signed with ICE, amid international scrutiny over the methods used by the agency's agents in Minnesota.

The fatal shooting of US citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis have sparked protests across the US and led to increased scrutiny of the agency.

Capgemini Government Solutions has been under contract since 18 December to provide "skip tracing services for enforcement and removal operations", public records show.

Skip tracing services locate individuals whose whereabouts are unknown.

Capgemini Government Solutions is set to be paid more than $4.8m (£3.5m) for its work tracing people for ICE, which is due to continue until 15 March, US government listings show. It is one of 13 contracts the subsidiary holds with ICE.

Capgemini, one of the largest listed companies in France, said in a statement that it had not been able "to exercise appropriate control over certain aspects of this subsidiary's operations in order to ensure alignment with the Group's objectives".

It added that "the divestiture process of this business will be initiated immediately".

Criticism of ICE practices has intensified in recent weeks since the shooting of 37-year-old Pretti, the second fatal shooting of a US citizen since immigration agents began surging several cities across the US, acting on the Trump administration's drive to increase deportations of illegal immigrants.

The killing of Pretti involved Border Patrol, an immigration agency which works alongside ICE, while Good was shot by an ICE agent.

ICE has detained thousands since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House with a pledge to increase deportations. ICE enforcement actions have regularly occurred in public places, leading to a number of clashes with protesters.

Last week, Capgemini's CEO AimanEzzat wrote on LinkedIn that "we were recently made aware, through public sources, of the nature of a contract awarded to Capgemini Government Solutions by DHS' Immigration and Customs Enforcement in December 2025".

"The nature and scope of this work has raised questions compared to what we typically do as a business and technology firm," he said.

The revelation provoked outrage amongst French politicians.

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure called for the company "to be transparent" about the contracts it has with ICE.

Meanwhile, left-wing opposition MP Hadrien Clouet called for sanctions to be imposed on French firms working with ICE, commenting: "French private companies are collaborating with ICE. We do not accept this."

Capgemini was founded in 1967 and currently functions as an IT services and consulting firm. It currently has more than 340,000 employees worldwide and is valued at €22bn (£19bn).

George Mitchell Scholarship renamed over Epstein links

02 Feb 2026

A scholarship bearing the name of a former United States senator who played a crucial role in Northern Ireland's peace process is to be dropped over his links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The US-Ireland Alliance has decided that the George J Mitchell Scholarship Program will no longer bear his name.

It said this was due to information within millions of files relating to Epstein which were released by the US Department of Justice on Friday.

A statement on behalf of Mitchell after previous links with Epstein were publicised said that during the time he knew Epstein "he had no knowledge of Epstein's actions involving underage girls".

BBC News NI has approached Mitchell for comment over the latest developments.

The latest release of documents shows a continued relationship between Mitchell and Epstein, following Epstein's first conviction.

This includes emails about the former senator to and from Epstein, as well as memos with appointments scheduled between the pair.

In an email to Epstein on 4 November 2013, it states Mitchell was due to meet with him, as is shown by the entry, "10:30am Appt w/Senator George Mitchell."

Epstein, a well-connected financier and convicted sex offender, was found dead by suicide in 2019 while awaiting a trial on sex trafficking charges.

Epstein letter

Previous links between Mitchell and Epstein include a handwritten letter from 2003 released in September during an earlier release of files.

In the letter in what was described as Epstein's "birthday book," Mitchell described his friendship with Epstein as "a blessing".

The letter was released by a US congressional panel as part of a copy of the book alleged to have been given to Epstein to celebrate his 50th birthday.

In a statement issued to BBC News NI at that time, Mitchell said he "deeply regrets having met and known Jeffrey Epstein and all the harm Epstein caused to so many victims".

The statement added: "The senator stands by his prior statements regarding Epstein.

"During the time he knew Epstein, he had no knowledge of Epstein's actions involving underage girls."

In 2019, Mitchell was accused of having sex with one of Epstein's victims. He denied the allegations, telling the BBC in 2024: "The allegation contained in the released documents is false. I have never met, spoken with or had any contact with [the alleged victim]."

Being named or pictured in the files is not an indication of wrongdoing.

Mitchell Scholarship

The Mitchell Scholarship was set up by the US-Ireland Alliance to honour Mitchell and has supported hundreds of US students over the years.

It has not selected new scholars since 2024 due to funding issues.

Mitchell chaired the peace talks that culminated in the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, which brought an end to three decades of conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles.

The US-Ireland Alliance say the scholarship is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland.

Up to twelve scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 were chosen annually for a year of postgraduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

New information

In a statement on Sunday, founder and president of the US-Ireland Alliance Trina Vargo said its board of directors had unanimously agreed to change the name of the scholarship.

"The decision was made due to new information that has come to light as part of the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein by the Department of Justice on Friday," Vargo said.

"We are extremely proud of the program and the scholars, and this turn of events in no way diminishes their achievements or our commitment to keeping them connected to the island, the Alliance, and each other.

"This decision allows us to focus on our mission to strengthen the ties between the US and the island of Ireland.

"Given the current state of the relationship, that is more important than ever."

Vargo said it would take time for the name to be changed on the website, social media accounts and other channels as conversations were needed with organisations, supporters and the Irish government.

The Alliance did not say what new information had prompted the decision

Further engagement to be sought

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science funds and creates policy for the higher and further education and research sectors in the Republic of Ireland.

In the past the department had provided funding to the Mitchell Scholarship.

A spokesperson for the department said it is aware of "this unilateral decision taken by the US-Ireland Alliance".

"The minister has directed that further engagement be sought with the US-Ireland Alliance in relation to this development and will be seeking the advice of the Attorney General on the appropriate next steps."

Mandelson and Mountbatten-Windsor in files

Other information contained in the latest release of files includes the suggestion in bank statements that Epstein made $75,000 (£55,000) of payments to accounts connected to the former Northern Ireland Secretary Lord Mandelson.

On Sunday he resigned his membership of the Labour Party, stating he did not want to "cause further embarrassment" by his links to Epstein.

Lord Mandelson said he had no record or recollection of receiving the sums and did not know whether the documents were authentic.

He reiterated his regret for "ever having known Epstein" and for continuing his association following the disgraced financier's conviction, apologising "unequivocally to the women and girls who suffered".

There are also emails between Epstein and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor dated February 2011 - putting more holes in Mountbatten-Windsor's assurances that he had cut off any contact with Epstein the previous year.

There is also a photo that appears to show the former prince kneeling on all fours over a female lying on the ground.

The BBC has contacted Andrew, formerly known as the Duke of York, for a response.

Mountbatten-Windsor has faced years of scrutiny over his past friendship with Epstein. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Who is George Mitchell?

George Mitchell is a former majority leader in the US senate.

He won admiration from across the political divide in Northern Ireland for his work to boost the peace process, chairing the Stormont peace talks during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Following the failure to set up devolved power, Mitchell acted as a facilitator to implement an inclusive power-sharing executive and the decommissioning of paramilitary weapons.

After a final 36 hours of non-stop negotiations, he led the main parties to agree to the Good Friday agreement on 10 April 1998, a political deal designed to bring an end to 30 years of violent conflict in Northern Ireland.

German defense chief gives pep talk on ‘happy farts’

1 Feb, 2026

Germans should adopt a tough stance against “enemies of democracy” at home and uncomplainingly embrace the continuation of costly aid for Ukraine, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has insisted, invoking a maxim on “happy farts.”

Speaking at a Social Democratic Party (SPD) convention in the city of Koblenz on Saturday, Pistorius branded the opposition right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD), and anyone voting for it, the “enemies of democracy.”

The minister urged Germans to “stand up for this democracy” more forcefully.

“A happy fart never comes from a miserable ass,” Pistorius declared, quoting 16th-century German theologian Martin Luther, a key figure in the Protestant Reformation. The phrase suggests that one’s mindset ultimately shapes outcomes.

According to the minister, Germans should apply the same attitude to external affairs.

“And that’s why it’s so important that we, as the Federal Republic of Germany… stand by Ukraine, even if it costs a lot of money,” Pistorius said.

He argued that Germany could afford the effort as the largest economy in Europe and the third largest in the world.

The defense minister acknowledged that without Western aid, “Ukraine would be dead tomorrow.”

Germany is Ukraine’s top backer within the European Union, having provided more than €40 billion ($46 billion) since the escalation of the conflict between Kiev and Moscow in February 2022.

Soon after assuming office last May, Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to transform the German military into the “strongest conventional army in Europe,” while continuing to prop up Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Germany’s economy saw two years of recession in 2023 and 2024, and a period of near-stagnation in 2025.

Last December, the country’s central bank warned that Germany is on track to post its largest budget deficit since reunification in 1990, citing a ramp up in military expenditure and continued financial support to Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last year that “with their current leaders, modern Germany and the rest of Europe are transforming into a Fourth Reich.”

‘We know about your mom’: ZohranMamdani faces heat over Epstein row; supporters heckle NYC mayor at home

Feb 2, 2026

ZohranMamdani was heckled by voters outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York mayor, after the US Justice Department released new Jeffrey Epstein-related records that mentioned his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair.

Videos show NYC residents gathered outside Mamdani’s home, speaking into a megaphone and constantly yelling “shame."

“That’s right, we know about your mom. Now listen. We was with you, Zohran. We voted for you, Zohran. We advocated for you, Zohran. We advocated for you.”

“You ain't getting nothing, get up in here and you lie to us. You lied, Zohran. Shame, Zohran!” they added.

The attention comes after Nair’s name appeared in an email connected to a 2009 social event hosted at the townhouse of convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. According to the email, Nair attended an “after party” for a film screening along with high-profile figures including Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos.

An email, dated October 21, 2009, sent by American publicist Peggy Siegal, read, “Just left Ghislaine's townhouse... after party for film. Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos were there... Jean Pigozzi, director Mira Nair...etc. Film received tepid reaction although women like it much more... Hillary Swank and Gere at stupid party in Bloomingdales cheap sportwear department... very weird.”

Studio went for free party from store and windows for a month... Going to be in Wall Street 2 tomorrow.... more to come. xoxo Peg,” it added.

While the email does not name the film, it appears to refer to Nair’s 2009 movie Amelia, based on the life of aviator Amelia Earhart and starring Hillary Swank and Richard Gere.

On Friday, the Department of Justice published more than three million additional pages of Epstein-related records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on November 19, 2025. This release includes over 2,000 videos and 1,80,000 images, bringing the total pages made public to nearly 3.5 million.

The newly released records were collected from multiple sources, including Florida and New York cases involving Epstein, the New York case against Maxwell, investigations into Epstein’s death, a Florida case involving a former Epstein butler, multiple FBI investigations, and an Office of Inspector General investigation into Epstein’s death.

ZohranMamdani assumed office as New York City’s mayor on January 1 after defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the mayoral election. At 34, Mamdani became the city’s youngest and first Muslim mayor. He succeeded mayor Eric Adams, who dropped his re-election bid in September but remained on the ballot.

Trump ‘jokes’ about adding three new US states

2 Feb, 2026

US President Donald Trump has said he plans to expand the country by adding Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela as new states, later describing the remarks as a joke, the Washington Post has reported, citing eyewitnesses.

Trump reportedly made the comments at the annual Alfalfa Club dinner on Saturday, an exclusive gathering of CEOs, politicians, and other Washington luminaries. It was the first time he had addressed the club, whose members include JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, philanthropist David Rubenstein, and outgoing Federal Reserve chairman Jerome H. Powell, according to the newspaper.

“So many people in the room I hate. Most of you I like,” Trump told the audience. He added that he might cut his speech short to watch the “invasion of Greenland,” before adding: “We’re not going to invade Greenland. We’re going to buy it.”

“It’s never been my intention to make Greenland the 51st state. I want to make Canada the 51st state. Greenland will be the 52nd state. Venezuela can be 53rd,” Trump stated.

Trump has repeatedly made acquiring Greenland a policy objective, arguing that the autonomous Danish island’s strategic location and resources are crucial to US security. He has also claimed that Denmark is too weak to defend it from a supposed Russian or Chinese threat – a charge dismissed as implausible by Copenhagen, Moscow, and Beijing.

Last year, Trump said Canada would be better off as the “cherished” 51st state of the United States, repeatedly referring to Canadian prime ministers as “governors.” He argued this was the only way to resolve trade disputes between the two countries. More recently, Trump threatened a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if Ottawa pursues closer trade ties with China.

In Venezuela, the US conducted a military raid in early January that captured President Nicolas Maduro and brought him to New York to face charges. Washington has since demanded “total access” to the country’s oil sector.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting last week, Trump said his administration was “getting along really well” with Venezuela’s interim leadership and confirmed that major US oil companies were scouting new projects in the country.

ZohranMamdani appoints ex-prisoner to lead New York City’s jail system – Who is Stanley Richards?

Feb 2, 2026

New York City mayor ZohranMamdani has appointed a formerly incarcerated man as the new Commissioner of the city’s Department of Correction.

64-year-old Stanley Richards will be the first person who has previously served time in prison to lead the department that runs the city’s jails.

Mamdani announced the appointment at a press event earlier this week. He said Richards’ life experience will help guide changes in the city’s corrections system.

Richards spent about two and a half years at Rikers Island and another four and a half years in state prison after being convicted of robbery in the late 1980s. He was released from prison in 1991.

After his release, Richards began working with the Fortune Society, a nonprofit organisation (NPO) in New York City that helps people returning from jail and prison. He eventually became the president and chief executive officer of the organisation and has spent decades working on reentry programmes and advocacy. He has also been an advocate of prison reforms.

In a statement, Richards said his appointment was an opportunity to lead from the top and work for both people in custody and correction officers. He said his own experience behind bars influenced his work and commitment to improving the justice system.

The appointment comes as New York City’s jail system faces close attention. Rikers Island has had long-term problems with violence and management, and it has been under federal supervision for years. A federal judge recently hired an outside manager to help with reforms at the jail.

ZohranMamdani, a democratic socialist, previously supported calls to defund the New York Police Department (NYPD) and criticised the NYPD as “racist” and a “major threat to public safety” in social media posts in 2020. He has since said he will not defund the police and has apologised to officers for past remarks.

Meanwhile, several police officers have left the NYPD in recent months and union leaders have reported a rise in resignations and departures, partly linked to low morale.

Venezuela releases rights activist Javier Tarazona

2 Feb, 2026

Henri Astier

Prominent Venezuelan rights activist Javier Tarazona has been freed, in the latest prisoner release announced by the government amid US pressure for reforms.

Tarazona, the head of human rights NGO Fundaredes, was arrested in 2021 and detained in the notorious El Helicoide prison in the capital Caracas. His release was announced on Sunday by Fundaredes.

Foro Penal, another Venezuelan rights group, said it had verified the liberation of more than 300 political prisoners since 8 January.

On Friday acting President, Delcy Rodríguez said the government would introduce an amnesty law that is expected to benefit hundreds of political prisoners. Under the bill, El Helicoide is also due to be closed.

The announcement came four weeks after US forces seized President NicolásMaduro, and demanded the regime introduce political and economic reforms.

In its statement on Sunday, Fundaredes said Tarazona had been jailed "for defending human rights, denouncing abuses, and speaking out".

It added that his release did not "erase the injustice he suffered", but represented "a necessary step in a process marked by criminalisation, persecution, and a lack of due process".

Tarazona had alleged that government officials had links with guerrillas in Colombia, with which Venezuela has a 2,000km (1,200-mile) border. The government accused him of treason, terrorism and incitement to hatred.

Maduro's dramatic capture by US special forces on 3 January has encouraged families of opposition and human rights figures arrested under Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chávez to step up their campaign for releases.

Venezuela has long denied holding political prisoners, but families and rights advocates have demanded charges against detainees be dropped. Opposition politicians, journalists, and activists have faced charges including terrorism and treason, which their families describe as arbitrary.

The amnesty bill announced by Rodríguez is expected to be approved by the National Assembly in the coming days. Its aim, the acting president said, is to "heal the wounds of political confrontation, violence, and extremism".

Foro Penal has said that many of those freed in recent weeks have not had the charges against them dropped.

This has left them in legal limbo and they have been barred from speaking in public, the group added.

Watch: Anti-ICE protesters surround female reporter, attempt to cut camera cable during LA Protest

Feb 2, 2026

A Fox 11 news crew faced aggressive harassment from anti-ICE protesters outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, as demonstrators surrounded the team, shouted obscenities, and attempted to sabotage their equipment.Videos circulating on social media show a masked mob encircling the female reporter and cameraman as they tried to cover the protests.

Some agitators were seen shoving cell phone cameras into the reporter’s face, yelling questions like, “Why does Fox News get special access?” and attempting to cut camera cables.

At one point, a protester sprayed graffiti on the news van and smashed its windows, while others blocked the crew from leaving.

Despite the chaos, the two-member team remained composed, retreating behind police barricades as officers equipped with BB guns, helmets, and batons monitored the situation. “Get the f–k out of here,” the crowd is heard shouting, highlighting the intensity of the standoff.

The incident follows a similar confrontation on Friday night when CNN correspondent Veronica Miracle was caught in the middle of anti-ICE protests outside the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles.

Federal agents deployed pepper balls to disperse demonstrators, forcing Miracle to cough and choke live on air during the broadcast.

These protests are part of a nationwide “ICE Out” shutdown movement opposing immigration enforcement actions by the Department of Homeland Security.

Public anger over ICE actions has intensified following the January 24 killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, during a Minneapolis protest. Officials claimed Pretti posed a threat, but video footage showed he was disarmed before being shot.

Earlier this month, Renee Good, a mother of three, was also killed during a separate federal enforcement operation. ICE recorded 32 deaths in custody in 2025, its deadliest year in two decades, fueling nationwide demonstrations against the agency.

What to know about Gaza’s Rafah border crossing

February 02, 2026

CAIRO, Egypt: Pedestrians are set to begin passing through the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt on Monday, after it was largely shut for close to two years since Israeli forces seized the Palestinian side.

The reopening, demanded by the United Nations and aid groups, is a key part of the second phase of US President Donald Trump’s truce plan for the Palestinian territory.

AFP looks at what to know about this crucial crossing:

- Vital access point -

COGAT, the Israeli defense ministry body coordinating Palestinian civilian affairs, has said it will only be open for the passage of “residents in both directions.”

AFP images showed ambulances lined up on the Egyptian side of the border, preparing to receive medical evacuees, who are expected to be the first groups allowed out.

The Rafah crossing into Egypt — often called Gaza’s “lifeline” — was the only border access for the territory that does not pass through Israel.

It now lies in an area held by Israeli forces following their withdrawal behind the so-called “Yellow Line” under the terms of the US-brokered ceasefire.

For a long time, the crossing was the main exit point for Palestinians from Gaza who were authorized to leave the narrow strip of land, under Israeli blockade since 2007.

From 2005 to 2007, it was the first Palestinian border terminal controlled by the Palestinian Authority, and later became a symbol of Hamas control over the Gaza Strip after the militant group seized power.

- Under Israeli control -

On May 7, 2024, the Israeli army took control of the Palestinian side, claiming that the crossing was being “used for terrorist purposes.”

Many access points have since been mostly closed, including those used by the United Nations.

Rafah briefly reopened for medical evacuations during a short ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in January of last year.

Israel has said it will “conduct security clearance of individuals” permitted in and out of Gaza, which is meant to be administered by a 15-member Palestinian technocratic body.

The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza is also waiting to enter the territory, after Israel’s approval.

No agreement has yet been reached on the number of Palestinians permitted through, sources said, noting that Egypt plans to admit “all Palestinians whom Israel authorizes to leave.”

Palestinians intending to return to Gaza will be allowed limited luggage, no metal or electronic items and limited amounts of medication, according to the Palestinian embassy in Cairo.

- EU-Palestinian mission -

COGAT said “an initial pilot phase” began Sunday, “in coordination with the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM), Egypt, and all relevant stakeholders.”

“The actual passage of residents in both directions will begin upon completion” of preliminary preparations, it added.

The Palestinian side of the crossing is expected to be administered by EUBAM and a delegation from the Palestinian Authority.

The EU had set up a civilian mission in 2005 to help monitor the Rafah crossing, but it was suspended two years later after the Islamist militant group Hamas took control of Gaza.

The European mission aims to provide a neutral, third-party presence at the key crossing and involves police from Italy, Spain and France. It was briefly redeployed in January of last year but suspended again in March.

Both the EUBAM and the Palestinian Authority delegation have arrived at the crossing, sources at the border told AFP.

 Aid entry -

Trump’s plan, which underpins the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, stipulates the reopening of the Rafah crossing and the entry of 600 aid trucks per day.

But Israeli authorities have stalled on the matter and life-saving aid remains inadequate, according to aid groups.

International aid is generally routed from Egypt, through the Rafah checkpoint, before trucks are directed to the nearby Israeli crossing of Kerem Shalom — which currently processes three-quarters of aid entering Gaza.

Drivers disembark their vehicles, which go through strict Israeli inspection before being unloaded and reloaded onto other vehicles authorized to enter Gaza.

Two aid sources on the Egyptian side told AFP on Thursday that Israel has continued to obstruct aid delivery, returning “dozens” of trucks without unloading them.

Jordanian anti-drugs authorities arrest 35 suspects in nationwide raids

February 01, 2026

LONDON: The Jordanian Anti-Narcotics Department arrested 35 suspects nationwide for drug production, dealing and smuggling, while seizing large quantities of drugs and firearms.

The Public Security Directorate on Sunday said that the suspects are linked to 13 criminal cases involving drugs and weapons, the Petra news agency reported.

Security forces conducted raids targeting drug dealers and promoters in several governorates, including Ma’an, where 10 wanted dealers were arrested. Additionally, two dealers were apprehended in Zarqa, and four suspects were arrested in Ajloun. The security forces in the southern Shouneh district raided three locations, arresting two suspects involved in marijuana cultivation.

In Amman, authorities handled seven major cases. A drug dealer was arrested with 17,000 narcotic pills, another with 18 blocks of hashish, and three traffickers were caught after a chase, resulting in the seizure of five blocks of hashish, 500 narcotic pills, crystal meth, and a firearm.

The fourth case in Amman led to the seizure of 1.25 kilograms of crystal meth, while the fifth resulted in the arrest of two traffickers with 14 blocks of hashish. In the sixth case, four dealers were arrested with 5 kg of marijuana, and the final case involved the seizure of six blocks of hashish from a dealer.

Authorities raided a site in the Ramtha District used by a drug dealer for distributing crystal meth. They arrested the suspect and seized 1.5 kg of the substance. In Mafraq, authorities arrested three drug promoters who were found with 4,000 narcotic pills after being tracked and raided.

Palestinian demolishes his own home in Jerusalem

February 01, 2026

LONDON: A Palestinian in East Jerusalem demolished his home on Sunday after receiving an order from Israeli authorities for building without a permit.

Yasser Maher Daana, a resident of the Jabal Al-Mukaberneighborhood southeast of Jerusalem, was forced to demolish the house in the Salaa area. The building had provided shelter for four family members and covered an area of about 100 sq. meters.

Israeli authorities often compel Palestinian residents in Jerusalem to demolish their own homes for allegedly lacking permits. Those who refuse face demolition of the homes by Israeli bulldozers, and significant fines.

The Israel policy aims to forcibly displace Palestinians and expand Israeli settlements in Jerusalem, in violation of international and humanitarian laws that guarantee the right to housing, according to the WAFA News Agency.

The Israeli government faces charges of war crimes and genocide in the Occupied Territories at the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.

Syria Kurds impose curfew in northeast cities before govt deal begins

February 01, 2026

QAMISHLI, Syria: Syrian Kurdish security forces on Sunday announced a curfew early next week in two cities in the country’s northeast, ahead of the implementation of a recent deal struck with the Islamist-led government in Damascus.

Damascus and Kurdish forces reached a comprehensive agreement on Friday to gradually integrate the Kurds’ military and civilian institutions into the state, after the Kurds ceded territory to advancing government forces in recent weeks.

Mazloum Abdi, head of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, has said the deal would be implemented on the ground from Monday, with both sides to pull forces back from frontline positions in parts of the northeast, and from the town of Kobani in the north.

He said a “limited internal security force” would enter parts of Hasakah and Qamishli but that “no military forces will enter any Kurdish city or town.”

Kurdish security forces announced a curfew in the northeastern city of Hasakah from 6:00 am (0300 GMT) to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, and in the northeast’s main Kurdish city of Qamishli on Tuesday, during the same hours.

It said the move was “to maintain security, stability and the safety of residents.”

A source from the Kurds’ security forces said a government security delegation visited its headquarters in Qamishli on Sunday.

The text of Friday’s deal maintains an ongoing ceasefire and introduces a “gradual integration” of the Kurdish forces and administrative institutions.

It appeared to include some of the Kurds’ demands, such as establishing brigades of fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Kurdish-majority areas.

The government’s push to extend its authority across the country was a blow to the Kurds.

They had sought to preserve the de facto autonomy they exercised after seizing swathes of north and northeast Syria in battles against the Daesh terrorist group during Syria’s civil war, backed by a US-led coalition.

- ‘Protects us’ -

In Qamishli on Sunday, thousands of Kurdish men, women and children filled the streets in a show of solidarity, waving Kurdish flags and holding up pictures of fighters who were killed, an AFP correspondent said.

Student Barine Hamza, 18, said “we have come out for Kurdish unity.”

“We are afraid of being betrayed because we do not trust this government,” she said.

Housewife Nourshana Mohammed, 40, said that “the presence of the SDF is important for us. It protects us Kurds and saved us” from IS.

Information Minister Hamza Mustafa told state media on Friday that the agreement included the handover of some oil fields, the Qamishli airport and border crossings to the government within 10 days.

He said SDF fighters would be integrated on an individual basis into several brigades being formed under the army’s command.

The United States, which has drawn close to Syria’s new Islamist authorities, recently said the purpose of its alliance with the Kurdish forces was largely over.

Also on Sunday, the head of internal security in Aleppo province, Mohammed Abdul Ghani, told reporters he met with Kurdish forces in Kobani to discuss security matters there “and begin the deployment of interior ministry forces,” without announcing a timeframe.

He said technical details still needed to be settled, but that the response from the Kurdish side was “positive.”

Located in Aleppo province more than 200 kilometers (125 miles) from other Kurdish-held areas in Syria’s northeast, Kobani is hemmed in by the Turkish border to the north and Syrian government forces on other sides.

Kurdish forces liberated Kobani from a lengthy siege by IS in 2015 and it took on symbolic value as their first major victory against the jihadists.

On Saturday, NGOs and a Turkish MP said Turkish authorities had blocked a convoy carrying aid to Kobani from across the border.

Elderly Palestinian shot dead in Rafah

February 01, 2026

GAZA: An elderly Palestinian man was killed by Israeli fire in Rafah on Sunday afternoon, bringing the number of fatalities since morning to two, according to local and medical sources.

The sources reported that Khaled HammadDahleez, 63, was shot dead by an Israeli drone northwest of Rafah.

Earlier in the day, another man was killed and several others injured in a drone strike north of Wadi Gaza, in the central Gaza Strip, the Palestinian News Agency reported.

On Saturday, at least 31 Palestinians, including children and women, were slaughtered in a series of Israeli airstrikes on several locations across the war-ravaged enclave — one of the deadliest days since the start of the ceasefire agreement on Oct. 11, 2025.

Since the ceasefire took effect on Oct. 11, the number of people killed has risen to 523, with 1,433 injuries recorded, while 715 bodies have been recovered during the same period.

Medical sources said on Sunday the death toll from Israel’s aggression on the Gaza Strip had risen to 71,795 Palestinians killed and 171,551 injured since the start of the assault in October 2023.

The sources reported that 26 fatalities and 68 injuries were brought to Gaza hospitals over the past 48 hours, noting that numerous victims were trapped under rubble or in the streets, with ambulance and rescue crews unable to reach them.

The ceasefire’s first phase called for the exchange of all hostages held in Gaza for hundreds of Palestinians held by Israel, a surge in humanitarian aid and a partial pullback of Israeli troops.

The second phase is more complicated. It calls for installing a new Palestinian committee to govern Gaza, deploying an international security force, disarming Hamas, and taking steps to begin rebuilding.

Hamas has so far ?rejected disarmament and Israel has repeatedly indicated that if the Islamist militant group is not disarmed peacefully, it will use force to make it do so.

Jordanian king, Egyptian president discuss Gaza in Cairo meeting

February 01, 2026

LONDON: King Abdullah II of Jordan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized the importance of implementing the ceasefire agreement for the Gaza Strip during their meeting at Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo.

The meeting stressed the need to enhance joint Arab efforts to restore stability in the region, including the Palestinian coastal enclave of Gaza, according to the Jordan News Agency.

The two leaders emphasized the need to fully implement the Gaza ceasefire, allow unhindered humanitarian aid, and accelerate recovery efforts in the territory.

Jordan and Egypt also firmly rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from the West Bank and condemned all violations and arbitrary actions against them.

King Abdullah cautioned against the repeated attacks on holy sites in Jerusalem, both Muslim and Christian, which have reportedly been perpetrated by Israeli authorities or settlers.

The parties emphasized the importance of de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of regional crises while respecting national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, along with Director of the Office of His Majesty AlaaBatayneh, also attended the meeting.

Israel announced on Sunday the limited reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt. The crossing, which is considered a vital gateway for both civilians and aid, had remained closed since Israeli forces seized control of it in May 2024 during the conflict in Gaza, aside from a brief reopening in early 2025.

Experimental farm in Al-Lith looks into future of Saudi Arabian agriculture

February 01, 2026

JEDDAH: An experimental farm in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Lith Governorate is one of the research initiatives reflecting the strategic transformation taking place in the Kingdom’s agricultural sector.

The farm uses highly efficient, sustainable production models that combine scientific research with commercial application, contributing to strengthening the country’s food security system and the sustainability of water resources.

Located in the GhumaiqaCenter on an area of about 10 hectares, the cutting-edge farm is a testing platform for modern agricultural technologies that tackle the challenge of water scarcity.

The farm includes developed open fields and modern greenhouses, supported by smart irrigation encompassing drip and sprinkler irrigation alongside surface and subsurface technologies.

All the systems operate via smart controls that enable the monitoring of water consumption and ensure improved efficiency, thereby achieving a balance between agricultural production and water conservation.

The farm also uses treated and diluted low-salinity seawater.

It aims to diversify agricultural water sources, reduce reliance on freshwater, and open new horizons for agriculture in coastal and semi-arid environments.

The project represents a promising investment opportunity in the field of smart agriculture, enabling the development of commercially scalable production models, particularly for high-value vegetables and fruits, while reducing operational costs associated with water and energy, enhancing the economic feasibility of future agricultural projects.

In addition, the project contributes to transferring and localizing agricultural expertise, supporting local food supply chains, and creating an attractive environment for agricultural investment.

This aligns with Sustainable Development Goals and enhances the efficiency of the private sector in adopting innovative agricultural solutions.

Yahya bin Abdulrahman Al-Mahabi, the director of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Lith Governorate, told the Saudi Press Agency that the project represented the future of agriculture in the Kingdom.

He explained that the vision was based on investing in technology, enhancing the return on water per unit, and integrating scientific research with investment opportunities.

Al-Mahabi spoke of the experimental farm as a modern, scalable and replicable model applicable in several regions of the Kingdom, particularly in coastal environments.

Al-Mahabi highlighted the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture’s commitment to supporting distinctive projects that contributed to achieving food security while developing rural areas and enhancing agricultural production efficiency, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Riyadh Writers Con a bold new chapter for storytellers

SUMAIYYA NASEEM

February 01, 2026

JEDDAH: In a city often understood by its speed and scale of ideas, a creative movement is unfolding around tables with ink stains and unfinished drafts.

Three years ago, British writer Lubna Ahmed-Haque arrived in the Kingdom’s capital and had a simple proposition: coffee and conversation for anyone interested in writing. This idea blossomed into Writers in Riyadh, a community of nearly 600 creatives preparing for its inaugural Riyadh Writers Con in February.

“We are passionate about giving aspiring writers a platform to grow their art and take an idea from being an outline, a thought, into an actual, full-blown story,” Ahmed-Haque told Arab News. “We’re really, really passionate about mental well-being, so that underpins a lot of what we do.”

Within the community’s story is the larger vision of why Riyadh is becoming the region’s creative capital. As a meeting point of cultures, professions, and creative impulses, the city proved to be fertile ground. From that first coffee meetup, Writers in Riyadh expanded organically into weekly workshops, open mic nights, and poetry supper clubs with Beast House, a members club for creative professionals.

Ahmed-Haque herself understands the vulnerability of the writing process as a medical copywriter working on her own contemporary fantasy novel. “Your first draft is literally you telling yourself the story,” she said. “That’s the best advice someone gave me.”

Writers in Riyadh also addresses something fundamental: writing’s inherent loneliness. “Being able to sit with other people who have been through or are going through the process, it just makes you feel less alone,” she added.

A steady accumulation of voices and needs eventually led to a larger, riskier idea. Enter Mariana De’ Carli, a Brazilian writer with Arab roots who published her first novel “The Knightsbridge Crowd” while living in the Kingdom’s capital and now runs US publishing house SLKY World LLC. The Riyadh Writers Con came into being from what she describes as “a crazy idea” shared during “a frantic phone call with Lubna.”

“People were asking us constantly to repeat workshops with Writers in Riyadh,” De’ Carli told Arab News. “I’ve done my publishing workshop twice and people would still be like, ‘We need more time.’ We would end up getting kicked out of venues just for taking too long.”

Scheduled for Feb. 6-7 at the British International School of Riyadh (Al-Waha campus), the event will feature international speakers, hands-on workshops, a writing competition, and opportunities for aspiring authors to pitch directly to publishers. A pre-conference mixer will be held on Feb. 4 at Beast House.

The conference mirrors Riyadh itself: ambitious, outward-looking, and eager to connect ideas across borders.

Princess Noura Al-Saud, the founder of two leading Saudi cultural incubators, told Arab News: “Rukun and AlMashtal are proud to take part in the first edition of the Riyadh Writers Conference. Initiatives like this are vital to the growth of the Saudi creative sector, and we are pleased to support and be part of a platform that brings writers and ideas together.”

The first day of Riyadh Writers Con is all about writing craft, opening with Abdul Ghafoor Danish’s keynote speech on “The Art of Storytelling.” A visiting professor at the London School of Business, his stories have moved audiences globally.

The second day shifts to the business of books, from marketing and branding to platform-building, and the often opaque world of publishing options. Spanish author Laura OpazoViso will open the day with an introduction to marketing, drawing on her experience as a traditionally-published author in Europe.

That balance between art and infrastructure is reflected in the speaker lineup of local and international creatives and publishing professionals whose work spans continents and genres.

Contributors include: Rana Hajjar, LeenaMagdi, Hiba Noor Khan, Lyrique Richards, Giada Angeli, Shelley Murdoch, Dr. Charles Hall, Amber Lee Ragland, SimarNounou, and Dina Alzibdeh. The Q App, DQ Living, Crea Print House, Inception and Destination Riyadh are among the community partners.

Saudi writer and workshop facilitator RaneemRabaan, who will approach the business side of publishing, told Arab News: ”I want to provide writers with actionable steps, so that as soon as they leave the doors of the venue, they feel capable and empowered enough to let their voices sing.”

Arab Scientific Publishers, Inc., a publishing house in Beirut, will join as the official publisher for the event’s Meet the Publisher session. Lina Chebaro, rights director and chief editor, put it simply: “Together, we are building pathways for stories to travel farther.”

The event’s organizing committee includes authors Elie B. Hart and Deborah Munoz de Cote, as well as Shams Within Wellness founder AyazRehman, DQ Living columnist Mohammed Ameen, lawyer Madison Siroishka, graphic designer Farheen Khan, and photographer Arslan Khan.

Writers in Riyadh open mic nights have previously featured performances in Urdu, Chinese, and Arabic; a ventriloquist sharing Saudi culture through his puppet; and a restaurant chef who surprised everyone as an Arabic opera singer. “It was just incredible, emotional talent from someone who would typically be unseen behind the counter,” De’ Carli recalled.

Local businesses have enthusiastically partnered with them. “We’ve never had to pay for a venue,” Ahmed-Haque said. “People are genuinely willing to support communities.”

But that generosity extends beyond logistics, as within the group, knowledge circulates freely. De’ Carli emphasizes beta readers who offer line-by-line feedback, editors who volunteer their expertise, and accountability partners.

“We’ve heard from our community members of people paying through the roof for mentorship, whereas here people are very generous and donate their time,” she said. “In other places, this would be a very different experience.”

De’ Carli’s own book launch in Riyadh last year is an example of the community showing up to support one of their own. “These are people who had been cheering me on since the very beginning,” she said.

Mental well-being is a through-line, with prompt writing sessions that create a safe space for reflective work. At a poetry supper club recently, a woman who had recently begun her writing journey told Ahmed-Haque: “I just want to share my story as a Saudi woman, about my identity, my struggles.”

“Being a collective, a community, gives you the opportunity to really soak that magic from one another,” Ahmed-Haque said.

As a publisher in Riyadh and with plans to launch in the Kingdom, De’ Carli brings extensive insight into the regions evolving literary market.

“There are a lot of authors who are keen, who have really original ideas,” she said. But infrastructure is still developing. “We only have the very first agent or two agents maximum.”

And so, opportunity abounds. Saudi authors are moving beyond traditional themes to explore new genres. “We can have a Saudi author who writes the next ‘Star Wars,’ or the next big romance,” De’ Carli said.

Saudi author and founder of Desert Publisher, Mohammed Babelli — among the local industry experts participating — also sees the Kingdom’s publishing industry as an expanding landscape full of opportunities to adapt and evolve.

He told Arab News: “Publishing is going viral on digital platforms. Before, we had either books or periodicals. Now, we have, in addition, a full range of different platforms. This provides more options to those interested, both creators and readers.”

Social media platforms like TikTok are disrupting traditional publishing globally, with young Saudi authors connecting to readers online and catering to their tastes, such as through storytelling tropes and creative book covers to match trends on BookTok.

“We are seeing this huge evolution of the industry,” Di’ Carli said. “Saudis read a lot … People are finding their voice and realizing the constraints and boundaries that were previously a part of traditional publishing worldwide no longer apply in the Internet era.

“We created Riyadh Writers Con to give writers and publishers practical context,” she added. “Not inspiration for its own sake, but insight that supports sustainable publishing decisions.”

De’ Carli is particularly appreciative of the Kingdom’s robust intellectual property framework in a time when creative industries must navigate the intricacies of artificial intelligence.

“Saudi Arabia has great IP laws. And I’m a big fan of the Saudi IP Authority because they’re very fast to strike down things that are infringing copyright,” she said.

While AI discourse in the Kingdom is still developing — as opposed to the lawsuit-heavy landscape in the US — De’ Carli sees opportunity in this moment to raise awareness among writers and publishing professionals about authors’ legal rights, emphasizing that Saudi law already protects creators’ autonomy over their copyrighted work.

Her publishing house amplifies regional writers internationally, creating space for them to tell their stories in their own voices: “We don’t want people writing about Saudi Arabia who have never been here. We want to take the voices of people who live here to an audience in a language that they’re going to understand.”

As the Riyadh Writers Con approaches, those intent on developing their craft have the opportunity to get insights into the full spectrum of the writing and publishing process.

Samantha Moonsammy, cofounder of Lucky Book Publishing in Canada, will lead sessions focused on turning literary ambitions into reality.

“Riyadh is a city of vision, innovation, and global connection,” she said. “My hope is that attendees leave these workshops seeing their book not as a distant dream, but as a real, doable next step, one that can create ripple effects far beyond the page, in their communities, businesses, and lives.”

Book illustrator Inda Ahmad Zahri, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, brings her expertise in children’s literature to a session on narrative structure, using picture books as a masterclass.

“It’s a medium I absolutely love for the layers couched within its seeming simplicity,” she said. “I truly believe the essence of this craft is applicable across all creative writing.”

American author and organizing committee member Hart told Arab News she wants attendees to “feel heard and realize they are existing in a shared experience, not just out to sea alone without a life raft. We want to be that life raft.

“I am hoping that every creative who comes to the conference can feel a sense of safety, support, and belonging.”

For the members embedded in the community, the transformation over time has been profound. Ciara Bolger Gammans had this to say: “Being a part of Writers in Riyadh has completely transformed how I approach writing. I am writing more consistently and with greater confidence. Everyone is very encouraging and helpful with their feedback.”

New Zealand author Winston Cowie, who is flying in for the conference, said: “I’m eager to meet the burgeoning Saudi Arabian writing community in person. So many cool and exciting things happening in Saudi Arabia at the moment.”

In a digital age that often overwhelms and isolates, perhaps the real story is written in the workshops and poetry readings where someone discovers they are not alone.

Iran envoy to Saudi Arabia praises ‘sober positions’ in region amid rising tensions

February 01, 2026

RIYADH: Iran’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia AlirezaEnayati has warned against efforts to destabilize the Middle East, praising what he described as “sober positions” in the region that favor dialogue over confrontation.

In a post on X, Enayati said there were forces seeking to “set the region ablaze, squander its wealth, halt the wheel of development in it, and impose war upon it,” adding that “there are those who want to shuffle the cards, drive wedges between its countries, and stir up sedition within it.”

The post, which included both an Iranian flag and a Saudi flag side by side, continued: “And there are sober positions in the neighborhood that reject any hostile action against Iran, encourage the language of dialogue, and refuse to accept despicable recklessness.”

His remarks come as Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to de-escalation, rejecting reports suggesting the Kingdom had shifted its stance on regional tensions.

A senior Saudi official told Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday that Riyadh has continued to support diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes between the US and Iran, stressing that the Kingdom rejected the use of its airspace or territory for any military operations against Tehran.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also reiterated that position during a telephone call this week with Iranian President MasoudPezeshkian, underlining Saudi Arabia’s respect for Iran’s sovereignty and its support for dialogue aimed at strengthening regional security and stability.

According to Pezeshkian, the call covered developments in Iran and discussions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear file, and he thanked Saudi Arabia for its stance on Iran’s territorial integrity. He also praised the crown prince’s role in promoting stability across the region.

Jeddah’s bakers take center stage at second market

AFSHAN AZIZ

February 01, 2026

JEDDAH: The vibrant world of artisanal baking took center stage this weekend at the Bakers Market, organized by Aysh Academy in collaboration with Art Jameel at HayyJameel.

Celebrating the craft, creativity and community of the city’s growing bakery scene, the market brought together a handpicked selection of bakeries, pastry shops and independent bakers.

Launched for the first time in Jeddah by Aysh Academy, the market features everything from artisan breads and viennoiseries to desserts, all crafted with passion, skill, and high-quality ingredients.

Visitors were able to explore, taste, and purchase freshly baked items while engaging with the bakers themselves in a lively, community-centered atmosphere.

SumaiaShowail, general manager of Aysh Academy, said: “The Bakers Market was buzzing as soon as the doors opened. Families and friends gathered in a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy moments of tranquility, discover hidden culinary gems, and support local bakers.

“This second edition, following our debut in December 2025, was equally successful. We have 10 editions planned throughout 2026, each capturing special themes and occasions, creating a community around monthly events that celebrate real food at affordable prices.”

Those taking part shared their experiences of the event.

NoierAloraifi, founder of Tabaqat Cafe, who was there with her son AbdulazizBinbaz, said: “The Bakers Market gave us great exposure for our business. We sold out within four to five hours and welcomed new customers to our shop, which has been operating for eight years on Amal Street in Jeddah. It’s not just about exposure, we enjoy connecting with other bakers and sharing our passion for cakes.”

RotailaFadul, owner and creative director of Rotaila’s Whisk, added: “The Bakers Market focuses on food and small businesses, unlike other bazaars that prioritize fashion. It’s an amazing platform to showcase our creations and engage with food enthusiasts.”

For Begos Bagels, founders Yasmin Jaber and Mohammad Al-Hussaini, the market provided their first opportunity to sell directly to the public: “The Bakers Market gave us the exposure to launch our concept in front of a live audience.”

Afia Oil, highlighting their Saudi-made extra virgin olive oil sourced from Al-Jawf Province, combined product sampling with interactive activities, including a photo booth and a flavor-guessing competition.

Chef Tamara Gazzaz of Pop Tayer, who had previously won Afia’s contest, was sponsored by the brand to take part in the market, where she displayed her mini pastries and samosas.

“Afia has been very generous in supporting local chefs,” she said. “Being part of the market allowed me to share my creations while helping spread awareness of Afia’s products in an engaging way.”

Saudi development program signs deal for 9 projects in Yemen

February 01, 2026

RIYADH: The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen has signed an agreement with Yemen’s Social Fund for Development to implement nine health and education projects across several governorates.

The agreement, finalized on Sunday, follows last week’s announcement of a range of initiatives aimed at supporting vital services and strengthening Yemeni state institutions.

The deal was signed by SDRPY General Supervisor Ambassador Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Jaber and Social Fund Executive Director HossamQaid, in the presence of Yemen’s ministers of public health, education, and planning and international cooperation, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Four healthcare projects will be delivered in Lahj, Taiz and Al-Dhale’a, including the construction of rural hospitals in Al-Mawasit in Taiz and in Al-Dhale’a, alongside maternal and child health facilities and an obstetric emergency center in Ras Al-Ara, Lahj.

The facilities will provide services including emergency care, inpatient treatment, maternity services, laboratories and radiology.

Five education projects will see model schools constructed in Marib, Lahj, Al-Dhale’a, Shabwa and Abyan. As well as science and computer laboratories, they will feature sports facilities, staff offices and modern learning environments, with designs adapted to support students with disabilities.

SDRPY said the healthcare projects aim to improve maternal and child health, expand access to specialized medical services and strengthen emergency response capabilities, while also creating employment opportunities.

The education initiatives are intended to raise teaching standards, support student development and enhance practical skills.

To date, the SDRPY has delivered more than 268 projects across the country, spanning education, health, water, energy, transport, agriculture and fisheries, as well as capacity building and support for Yemen’s government institutions.

Remember Us In Your Prayers, Politicians Are The Problem Of Nigeria – Peter Obi

February 2, 2026

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has requested that Nigerians pray for politicians in the country.

According to Obi, Nigeria is not a poor country, but a country that lacks good leaders.

He declared that politicians are the problem of Nigeria, and urged the citizens to always remember them in prayers so God could touch their hearts and help them to do what is right and just.

Naija News reports that Obi made the statement on Sunday in his goodwill message at the Thanksgiving Service held at the Cathedral of St Peter’s, Aremo, Ibadan, to mark the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Oyo State.

He also rated Governor SeyiMakinde well in serving the people of Oyo State.

“I thank Gov. Makinde for faithfully serving the people of Oyo State.

“As you celebrate this 50th anniversary, I pray that the next fifty years of the great state will be exemplary.

“May God continue to bless our governor and all the members of his team.

“As I conclude, I want to make a request to Nigerians to, please, always remember us politicians in prayers.

“We are the problem of Nigeria. No other person. Nigeria is not a poor country but only poorly governed.

“Remember us in your prayers that God should touch our hearts to use public money for public good,” Obi said.

‘Ongoing Electoral Act Amendment Is Waste Of Time Without Enforcement’ – Falana

February 2, 2026

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has stated that the ongoing Electoral Act amendment is a waste of time without enforcement.

Naija News reports that Falana made the remark during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme.

Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the country is operating in an atmosphere of reckless impunity, noting the absence of a penalty for vote buying and thuggery during elections.

According to him, the problem is not the absence of laws, but the refusal of the political class to enforce them.

Falana also faulted the ongoing gale of defections, stressing that politicians are not facing any consequences, and it is the real threat to the nation’s democracy.

He said, “We operate in an atmosphere of reckless impunity. The ongoing amendment exercise is time wasting if there’s no enforcement. We have always had a very steep penalties on purchase of votes. Thuggery and the rest of them.

“But members of the political class, the ruling parties, have never sent the engine to arrest and deal with electoral offenders.

“As far back as 2008, the Wale panel recommended the establishment of an electoral offenses commission to arrest offenders and prosecute them. No regime, including the one that campaigned for electoral reforms, has ever thought of setting up that now, what is the big deal now?

“We want to increase campaign funds and nobody has ever complied with that. The only important political point in Nigeria today is the gale of defections, and nobody is talking of that, even in the proposed amendment.”

Nigerian Army Storm Sambisa Forest, Kill Senior Boko Haram Commander, Others

February 2, 2026

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have eliminated a senior Boko Haram commander, identified as Abu Khalid, also known as the group’s second-in-command in Sambisa Forest, Borno State.

10 other terrorists were also killed during the operation.

The military disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, North-East Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. SanniUba.

The terrorists were neutralised in the Komala general area of Konduga Local Government Area during a night operation carried out by the troops at about 11pm on Saturday.

The statement reads, “Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation Hadin Kai, have recorded another significant operational success with the neutralisation of a top Boko Haram/ISWAP leader, Abu Khalid, identified as the second-in-command of Boko Haram in the Sambisa Forest, alongside 10 other terrorists during a night operation in Borno State.”

Uba noted that the operation occurred barely 24 hours after troops eliminated another notorious Boko Haram/ISWAP commander, Julaibib, who was operating within the Gujba axis of the Timbuktu Triangle.

He said, “Troops of Sector 1, in conjunction with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force under Operation Desert Sanity, made contact with the terrorists in the Komala general area of Konduga Local Government Area during night offensives at about 11pm. Abu Khalid was a key figure within the terrorist hierarchy, coordinating operations and logistics in the Sambisa axis.”

He added that following the engagement, troops recovered five AK-47 rifles, magazines, several bicycles, assorted logistics and food items, as well as a large quantity of medical supplies.

Uba said no casualties were recorded among the troops during the operation.

He added: “Troops’ morale remains high as clearance operations continue across the Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains, Timbuktu Triangle and other known Boko Haram and ISWAP hideouts in the North-East region.”

The Joint Task Force, he said, reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the tempo of operations until all terrorist elements are neutralised and lasting peace and economic stability are restored to the region.

He further disclosed that the military high command commended the troops for their sacrifices and dedication in the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities in the North-East, urging them to sustain the operational momentum.

Adamawa JSC Appoints 20 Judges To High, Sharia, Customary Courts

February 1, 2026

The Adamawa State Judicial Service Commission has approved the appointment of 20 judges to serve across the High Courts, Sharia Court of Appeal and Customary Court of Appeal in the state.

The appointments are expected to strengthen judicial capacity and enhance the speed of justice delivery across the state’s judicial system.

A breakdown of the appointments shows that 14 judges were named to serve in the High Courts of the state.

Those appointed are AliyuBakari, Ibrahim Ulenda Musa, Daniel John, AminuSa’adu, Christie NgbaleTarfa, AbdulrazakAdamuAbdullahi and Mohammed Buba.

Others are Mohammed Hammajoda, SadiqGiwa, Musa MijinyawaBala, ShehuUthman Mustapha, Umar Isa, YakubuAhmadu and Japhet Ibrahim.

The Judicial Service Commission also appointed two judges to the Sharia Court of Appeal.

They are IshaqAbdullahi Jada and AbubakarIshaku.

Similarly, four judges were appointed to the Customary Court of Appeal in the state.

Those appointed are Awamem Medan Fwa, Dimas ElshamaGwama, Deborah Umaru Peter and David Benjamin Pembi.

The appointments are expected to ease the workload on existing judges and improve access to justice, as well as speed up the dispensation of cases across the state’s courts.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday affirmed the death sentences imposed on five men convicted over the 2018 Offa bank robbery, dismissing their appeals as lacking merit.

A court official who witnessed the proceedings told SaharaReporters that the appellate court rejected all the grounds of appeal filed by the convicts and ordered their immediate return to prison custody.

“The court dismissed all their grounds of appeal and upheld their convictions. They have been taken back to prison,” the official said.

Although the convicts retain the right to approach the Supreme Court, the official noted that the arguments raised at the Court of Appeal were unconvincing and may not succeed if repeated at the apex court.

Those whose death sentences were upheld are AyoadeAkinnibosun, AzeezSalahudeen, NiyiOgundiran, IbikunleOgunleye and Adeola Abraham.

They were convicted of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide.

A sixth suspect, Michael Adikwu, a retired police officer, died in custody before the commencement of the trial.

Naija News recalls that the convictions stem from the April 2018 coordinated bank robbery in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, during which five commercial banks were attacked.

At least 32 people were killed, including nine police officers, two of whom were women, making it one of the deadliest bank robberies in Nigeria’s history.

Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court had earlier sentenced the five convicts to death by hanging after a trial that lasted about six years and attracted nationwide attention.

In her judgment, which lasted over four hours, Justice Salman held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ramadan: Sokotogov urges unity, civic responsibility among residents

February 1, 2026

The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has called on residents to translate the spiritual lessons of Ramadan into practical actions that promote unity and accelerate development.

The Governor made the appeal on Sunday during a special Ramadan lecture held at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Mosque, Sokoto, organised by the Yoruba Muslims Community.

He was represented by his Special Adviser on Resident Communities, Maryam Suleiman.

Addressing Islamic scholars, community leaders, and faithful attendees, Aliyu said Ramadan instils self-discipline, empathy, and sacrifice—virtues that should extend beyond personal worship to foster collective responsibility in society.

He stressed that every resident of Sokoto, regardless of ethnic or occupational background, has a role to play in the state’s progress.

Communities, he noted, could contribute through simple but impactful actions such as maintaining cleanliness, supporting local businesses, volunteering for community projects, and offering constructive ideas to government agencies.

“Ramadan reminds us of our duties not only to Allah but also to our neighbours and our community. It is a period of deep reflection on how we can better our society,” the Governor said.

He further emphasised that sustainable development is a shared responsibility, achievable only when residents actively participate in building peaceful and progressive communities.

Participants widely commended the lecture, describing Aliyu’s message as a timely blend of religious obligation and civic duty. Many expressed optimism that the Ramadan spirit would strengthen unity and inspire citizens to support the state’s development agenda.

In his lecture, the Chief Imam of the Yoruba Muslims Community in Sokoto, Prof. Suleiman Rabiu, reminded Muslims that Ramadan is a time to renew their commitment to Allah and humanity, urging the faithful to assist the less privileged and strengthen communal bonds during the fasting period.

The event concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and continued progress in Sokoto State.

DR Congo president outlines pre-conditions for a national dialogue

February 1, 2026

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive and peaceful dialogue between all people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a New Year’s address to the diplomatic corps in Kinshasa on Saturday, he said national unity was “more than ever a fundamental requirement”.

His comments come as fighting continues in the east of country between the army and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.

Called for by part of the opposition, the idea of an inter-Congolese national dialogue has also been promoted by Angolan President JoãoLourenço in recent weeks.

Tshisekedi, however, set out conditions for it to take place, including that the process must take place on home soil and under institutional control.

The president also said the process should not call into question his legitimacy or that of the institutions elected by universal suffrage.

This despite the fact that part of the opposition is contesting his election and denouncing his management of the country.

Finally, he insisted that the process should not seek to overturn court decisions that have already been made.

“Justice will follow its normal course with rigour, to the end, and without complacency, in order to honour the memory of those who have unjustly fallen as a result of the attack," he said.

Former president Joseph Kabila was sentenced to death in absentia in September by a military court that convicted him of war crimes, treason, and crimes against humanity.

The case stems from his alleged role in backing the advance of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in eastern Congo. Kabila has denied any wrongdoing.

Tshisekedi said 2026 would be a decisive year for the DRC.

He said this would be centred on durable security in the east and restoration of state authority, accelerated governance reforms, economic transformation, and consolidation of national unity.

Over 100 Bandits Engage Nigerian Military In Gun Battle At Notorious Sokoto Stronghold

February 2, 2026

The Nigerian Army has overrun the stronghold of a notorious bandit kingpin, Gwaska Dan Karmi, in Sokoto State.

A military source told Punch that the operation was carried out by troops of the Nigerian Army under Sector 2 of Operation FansanYamma after intelligence emerged that more than 100 bandits had converged at the camp to plan large-scale attacks on rural communities and military logistics routes.

The troops were backed with close air support from the Nigerian Air Force.

According to the source, the location had been placed under sustained surveillance for several days before the assault was launched on January 31, 2026.

“The intelligence revealed that the bandits were planning coordinated attacks on villages and military supply lines, making the camp a high-value target,” the source said.

As ground troops advanced, the bandits engaged them in a fierce firefight, attempting to flank and encircle the soldiers.

They were, however, overwhelmed by the superior firepower and coordination of the troops.

“The bandits fought desperately, but our troops maintained fire superiority. Many were neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds,” the source added.

The camp, believed to have served as a major logistics and coordination hub for bandit operations across parts of Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina states, was destroyed during the operation.

Troops set the facility ablaze before executing a tactical withdrawal, while NAF platforms carried out follow-on interdiction missions to track and strike fleeing elements.

“The Air Force is currently monitoring and engaging escaping bandits to prevent regrouping,” the source said.

Gwaska Dan Karmi is regarded as one of the most feared bandit commanders in the region, linked to mass abductions, village raids and attacks on security formations. His network has operated for years from forest enclaves used as sanctuaries by criminal gangs terrorising communities in the North-West.

The Nigerian Army, however, confirmed that the operation came at a cost, with some soldiers paying the supreme price during the encounter. A combat enabler vehicle was also hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and set ablaze.

Confirming the operation, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. OlaniyiOsoba, said the sacrifices of the fallen troops would not be in vain.

“The Nigerian Army honours the gallantry and sacrifice of our fallen heroes. Their courage has significantly degraded bandit networks in this region,” Osoba said.

He added that troop morale remains high and operations would continue until banditry is dismantled.

“Combat efficiency remains high. Our troops will sustain pressure, disrupt supply chains and deny these criminals freedom of action across the area,” he said.

80 Worshippers Return After Kaduna Church Attack

February 1, 2026

By EnioluwaAdeniyi

No fewer than 80 worshippers who fled abduction during a bandit attack on KurminWali in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State have returned home after spending nearly two weeks in neighbouring villages.

The Village Head, IshakuDan’azumi, confirmed the return in a telephone interview with PUNCH Online on Sunday.

Dan’azumi said that although initial reports suggested that 177 worshippers had been abducted during the attack, 80 were later confirmed to have escaped and taken refuge in nearby communities.

“We have observed that some people are trying to politicise our situation even as families are going through serious trauma.

“We are appealing to the government and the military to expedite action to secure the safe return of the remaining 86 people still in the bandits’ camp,” Dan’azumi added.

A military source, who spoke anonymously to Punch due to protocol, linked the return of the displaced worshippers to intensified military operations targeting bandit hideouts in Kajuru and its surrounding forest corridors.

While details remain unclear on how the 80 managed to escape, community sources said the increasing military presence has emboldened some villagers to cautiously return to their homes.

The fragile calm in Kajuru was shattered again last Tuesday when bandits attacked Maikori community in Maro Ward, killing three residents.

A local source who spoke under anonymity for security reasons identified the victims as Hassan Agola, Lawal Samson, and Baba Apolo.

Residents said the Maikori incident has heightened tension across the area, with renewed calls for stronger and more permanent security deployment.

KurminWali was attacked on a Sunday night during a worship service, with armed men storming the church and abducting several worshippers, while others fled for safety.

Families of those still in captivity say they remain anxious but hopeful, following reports of increased military patrols and offensive sweeps across troubled communities.

“We just want our people back. The trauma is becoming unbearable,” a community elder told PUNCH Online.

As of Sunday, 86 residents remain unaccounted for, with locals urging urgent government intervention to bring the ordeal to an end.

‘I have absolutely no connection’: Anwar responds to Epstein email mentions

01 Feb 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he was unaware until today that his name had been mentioned in emails linked to the Epstein case.

“Just today I found out that some outsiders wanted to meet and even ‘dropped’ my name in emails related to the Epstein case,” he wrote in a statement on his social media accounts.

“Alhamdulillah, it’s been more than a decade as mentioned in the emails, and I have absolutely no connection with any of the parties exchanging those emails, especially Epstein,” he added.

He also used the laugh out loud emoji after mentioning the email and the angry emoji next to Epstein’s name.

He added the hashtag #DoneExplain, and said he will continue with his personal plans in Johor Bahru.

Anwar’s comments came amid renewed attention online after the emails surfaced, though he stressed there was no involvement on his part.

The Epstein scandal involves convicted US financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of running a global network of sexual abuse and trafficking of minors before his death in 2019.

Singapore to set up national space agency in April as it eyes bigger role in orbit

02 Feb 2026

SINGAPORE, Feb 2 — Singapore will establish its first national space agency on April 1 in a bid to sharpen the country’s capabilities in an increasingly competitive global space economy, reported The Straits Times.

The country’s Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science and Technology Tan See Leng said the National Space Agency of Singapore (NSAS) will anchor the country’s efforts to develop, deploy and safeguard its space assets.

The agency will also run a new multi-agency operations centre providing satellite tasking and geospatial analytics to support government work in areas ranging from port operations and urban planning to environmental monitoring and food security.

“Our geographical location positions us to do more in this region,” Tan said at the opening of Singapore’s inaugural Space Summit today, held alongside the Singapore Airshow.

Tan noted that the Singapore government currently co-owns three earth-observation satellites with defence and engineering group ST Engineering, and will continue expanding the country’s constellation to meet national and regional needs.

The Singapore government will also “progressively build up and operate space situational awareness capabilities, to ensure the safety of our space assets in the increasingly congested space domain”.

NSAS will be headed by veteran public servant Ngiam Le Na, deputy chief executive of the defence research organisation DSO National Laboratories.

With 25 years in public service and leadership roles across the defence science sector, she previously oversaw the acquisition and development of earth-observation satellites for environmental monitoring, maritime security and disaster relief, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The new agency will take over and broaden the efforts of the Economic Development Board’s Office for Space Technology and Industry, with a mandate to build “world-class space R&D capabilities, develop a thriving space industry and advance international partnerships”, Tan said.

Singapore has ramped up investment in the sector in recent years. Since 2022, more than S$200 million (RM620 million) has been allocated to space-related R&D projects, supporting research institutes and companies working on satellite technologies.

Tan said future funding will target climate and sustainability-focused applications — including satellite-based carbon monitoring — as well as space-situational awareness and microgravity research linked to human health.

The Singapore government will also expand its international partnerships and help local space-technology firms tap regional opportunities. Singapore is currently home to about 70 space companies and 2,000 professionals spanning sectors from satellite design to space-based services.

Singapore’s experience in space technology dates back more than half a century. It built its first ground station in 1971, launched its first communications satellite in 1998 and sent its first locally built satellite into orbit in 2011. Industry, academia and government partnerships have produced more than 30 satellites over the past two decades.

MTI said NSAS will lead efforts to help Singapore fully participate in the fast-growing global space economy, projected to reach US$1.8 trillion by 2035.

Umno must reinvent itself to regain political dominance, says Zahid

2 Feb 2026

Umno president Ahmad ZahidHamidi warns the party must rebrand and counter negative perceptions to survive and avoid “closing shop” in future elections

KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO must leave its comfort zone and take extraordinary steps to regain its dominance in Malaysian politics, says its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad ZahidHamidi.

He stated the party must no longer be seen as rooted in nostalgia and must undergo a comprehensive rebranding.

This approach should also involve other parties within the BarisanNasional coalition, he added.

“We must think about our direction not only 20 years from now, but also the fact that in about 22 months we will be facing a general election,” he said.

“Therefore, from now on, we must have good products, branding and marketing.”

Zahid warned that if voters make the same decisions as in the 2018 and 2022 elections, UMNO could face extinction.

“I fear that 20 years from now, when UMNO reaches 100 years of age, we will have to close shop,” he said.

He delivered this speech at the first anniversary dinner of the UMNO Political School (SPU).

Also present were UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and secretary-general Datuk Dr AsyrafWajdiDusuki.

Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said strengthening the party involves countering negative narratives that have driven voters away.

“Even if our product is good, but external perceptions of us remain negative, UMNO will not go anywhere,” he stated.

“This perception is our collective nightmare, so we must dismantle it properly.”

On the SPU, he said its graduates are UMNO’s future leaders and young thinkers who will analyse issues and provide input to the leadership.

VM2026 promotion must target specific tourist groups, says Zahid

1 Feb 2026

Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid says Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaigns must be tailored to specific tourist segments, not generic, to ensure effectiveness.

KUALA LUMPUR: Promotional strategies for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 must be tailored to specific tourist groups to ensure campaign effectiveness.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad ZahidHamidi said marketing approaches should not be generic, as each tourist segment has different interests.

“It must be followed up with subsequent actions,” he told reporters after flagging off participants of the Malaysia Night Music Run.

He said the campaign cannot rely on a single form of publicity and must be aligned with the respective target groups.

Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the VM2026 Cabinet Committee, also stressed the importance of sporting events like marathons in attracting foreign tourists.

He expressed admiration that the run attracted over 5,000 participants, exceeding the initial target of 3,000.

“It is hoped that many international participants will take part in marathons like this,” he said.

He added that good publicity for such events would help increase foreign tourist arrivals and generate economic activity.

Ahmad Zahid also commended the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Tourism Malaysia for organising familiarisation trips.

These trips for wholesalers, retailers, airlines and media practitioners aim to strengthen tourism promotion comprehensively.

Earlier, the KL10 event, a 10-kilometre run involving over 2,000 runners, was flagged off by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk FadlunMakUjud.
