Muslim Migrant Labourer From Bengal Lynched In Haryana On Suspicion Of Eating Beef

Sabir Malik (right) was beaten to death on Aug 28. Cops later arrested five persons for the lynching and detained two minors

------

Sep 1, 2024

HISAR/KOLKATA: Five men associated with a cow vigilante group have been arrested and two boys below 18 detained for allegedly beating a 24-year-old migrant worker from Bengal named Sabir Malik to death in Haryana's CharkhiDadri district on Aug 28. The lynching happ-ened on the suspicion that migrant workers were eat-ing beef in the village.

CM Nayab Singh Saini condemned the crime on Saturday, saying; "Mob lynching is unacceptable. We've implemented strict laws for cow safety and preservation. There's no compromise when it comes to protecting cows. People are very devoted, and villagers often react strongly when they hear about cow slaughter. I urge them to exercise caution and avoid such actions."

Nuh MLA Aftab Ahmed of Congress criticised BJP govt. "There is nothing called law and order in Haryana. Antisocial elements, goons and criminals are mov-ing freely under the garb of cow protection and vigilantes," he said.

Malik had gone to Haryana for work a year ago, leaving behind his wife, three-year-old child, elderly par-ents and a brother back home in Basanti, South 24 Parganas. His body reached his home on Friday. The West Bengal Migrant Workers Welfare Board has reached out to his family and has assured them of all help.

2 teens among 7 detained On Aug 27, rumours circulated about migrant labourers from Assam and Bengal eating beef in Hansawas Khurd village. This prompted cow vigilantes and villagers to search the migrants' kitchens and utensils, creating a ruckus. Police arrived and discovered cooked meat and took samples for tests.

Six migrant workers were detained as a precaution. Next day, Malik's body was found near Bhandwa village. Police registered a case of murder against four youths and handed the body to his family. His brother-in-law filed a police complaint, alleging some youths lured Malik to a bus stand under the pretext of giving them scrap material. He alleged that the youths beat Malik with sticks before abducting them. On Aug 29, seven youths, including the two teenagers, were detained. The minors were sent to a juvenile home. The other five suspects are Sahil alias Pappi, Kamaljeet, Mohit, Ravinder alias Kalia, and Abhishek alias Shaka. They are from CharkhiDadri and Rohtak districts. Four of the accused have been placed under police remand and interrogated. Fearing for their safety, the migrant labourers began preparing to leave the village on Aug 30.

72 Yrs Old Elderly Muslim Man Assaulted, Abused On Train By Men Claiming He Was Carrying Beef In Maharashtra

Aug 31, 2024

A video of an elderly Muslim man being assaulted and abused by some co-passengers on a train in Maharashtra claiming that he was carrying beef has sparked widespread criticism on social media.

The video showed a group of men abusing and repeatedly slapping the man, Haji Ashraf Munyar, and asking him if the meat he was carrying was beef. The assault reportedly took place near the town of Igatpuri in the Nashik district.

The Government Railway Police in the Thane district on Saturday filed a first information report in the matter. A railway police official told Scroll that the incident was from August 28.

Munyar, a resident of the Jalgaon district, was said to have been travelling to his daughter’s home in the city of Kalyan near Mumbai.

“We have taken cognisance of the video and identified the victim,” PTI quoted an unidentified official as saying. “Some of the people involved in the attack have also been identified, and a probe is on.”

The accused men have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rioting, unlawful assembly, wrongful restraint, causing hurt, criminal intimidation, mischief causing loss or damage and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, The Indian Express reported.

Commenting on the assault, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader and former Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel said that citizens could no longer remain silent spectators to such crimes. He said that all secular-minded Indians should come together to defeat forces of hatred.

“How so much poison has spread among these men and how could they even think of doing such a thing to somebody who maybe their grandfathers age?” he asked in a social media post. “Enough of giving memorandums and expressing our anger on social media. If govt and police is turning a blind eye then we as a community need to stand and counter these forces.”

Imran Pratapgarhi, the chairperson of the Congress’ minority department, remarked that the assault was representative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new India. “An entire crowd of people is assaulting an elderly Muslim passenger in a train, and all of this is happening under official protection,” he said.

Israeli Regime Primary Obstacle To Islamic World’s Stability: OIC Council of Foreign Ministers

(Photo: Tehran Times)

August 31, 2024

Asadullah Eshragh-Jahromi commented during the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He emphasized that the destabilizing actions of the Israeli regime significantly hindered cooperation among Islamic nations. The OIC's 50th session occurred on Thursday and Friday, focusing on the “Development of transport and communications infrastructure within the OIC framework, a key tool in the fight against poverty and insecurity.”

Eshragh-Jahromi expressed profound concern and condemned the aggressive and inhumane actions perpetrated by the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip over the past eleven months. He also denounced the recent assassination of the Hamas leader in Tehran, urging the international community and the OIC to take a firm stance against war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, and to hold the Zionist regime accountable for its actions. Additionally, the representative from the Islamic Republic highlighted the importance of addressing the underlying causes of insecurity and crises in West Asia, asserting that the regime's policies obstruct unity among OIC member states.

Eshragh-Jahromi also criticized the economic sanctions imposed on several developing countries, which violate international law, calling for their rejection by all nations. Eshragh-Jahromi emphasized that U.S. sanctions undermine economic stability and pose a considerable obstacle to the development and availability of vital resources and technology for Islamic countries. The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) serves as a permanent entity within the OIC framework, comprising the foreign ministers from its 57 member states. This Council ranks as the second-highest decision-making authority in the OIC and convenes annually to deliberate and resolve matters significant to the Muslim community.

The Council focuses on various issues, including political, economic, and social collaboration among OIC member states, while also fostering dialogue and partnerships with non-OIC countries and international organizations. Before this session, the seventeenth session of the Council in 1992 led to the formation of the Al-Quds Committee, aimed at safeguarding the holy city of Jerusalem along with its Muslim and Christian sacred sites. Additionally, during the twenty-seventh session in 2016, the OIC reiterated its dedication to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, emphasizing their entitlement to self-determination and independence, with East Jerusalem designated as their capital.

1 Sep, 2024

When Pope Francis visits Indonesia next week, he will stop by a mosque in Jakarta that has an unusual feature – a tunnel connecting it to the city’s Catholic cathedral, as part of a push for interfaith harmony on his 12-day Asia-Pacific tour.

The 28.3-metre “Tunnel of Friendship”, connecting the iconic Istiqlal mosque to the Our Lady of the Assumption cathedral, was built by the government in 2020 as a symbol of religious harmony, a theme the global head of the Catholic Church has also emphasised on his travels during his 11-year reign.

Faith Leaders Urge UK To Unite Against Hate After Tommy Robinson’s Anti-Islam Plan Revealed

Tommy Robinson – real name Stephen Yaxley Lennon – made plans to turn religious groups against the Muslim community

-----

By David Parsley

31-08-2024

Religious leaders are urging people throughout the UK to “stand in solidarity against hatred” after far-right activist Tommy Robinson tried to turn different faith groups against followers of Islam.

The Chief Rabbi, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the heads of the Hindu Council and the Muslim Council of Britain have urged Britons to come together in the face of far-right plans to launch a campaign of hate against British Muslims.

As i revealed on Thursday, Robinson – whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – planned to use people from different religious communities in a campaign to try to turn Britons against those who follow Islam.

Details of meetings held by Robinson were passed to i revealing the inner strategy of the far-right activist’s attempts to canvas support from the Sikh, Hindu, Jewish and black communities as well as to mobilise football hooligans.

“We stand in solidarity against hatred and will act to protect one another whenever necessary, because that is what it means to be British.”

Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, added: “Our organisation, along with every other serious Jewish community group in the UK, has repeatedly made it clear that we want nothing to do with Tommy Robinson and his attempts to fuel bigotry in this country.”

Sir Ephraim and Mr Rosenberg were joined in a unity among faith communities by Rajnish Kashyap, the secretary general of the Hindu Council.

Zara Mohammed, general secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, added that news of Robinson’s plans to sow division between her community and other faiths was “a shocking revelation”.

Details obtained by i expose how Robinson tried to garner support from varying religious groups and communities in the UK, co-ordinated with far-right influencers, and mobilised football hooligans in an attempt to launch anti-Muslim rallies across the country.

During the meetings, which took place last autumn, Robinson proposed getting members of Hindu, Jewish, Sikh and black communities together in a new UK-wide movement against Islam.

Robinson insisted any campaign would not mention Muslims directly, only implying the criticism by discussing recent terrorist attacks and jihad on the streets of the UK.

Ms Mohammed added that it was “time that the authorities took action” against Robinson given his latest threat to the Muslim community.

She said: “I would say that this is a threat to the security of Britain. We saw the kind of carnage on the street, the destruction to property, businesses and local communities, the division he has caused.

“We’ve got the immediate situation under control, but it’s still seething under the surface and people who are harboring these are views are being organised by Tommy Robinson to attack communities, specifically Muslim communities and immigrant and refugee communities.

“The threat has been evident, and now it really does come back to the authorities and the Government to reassure the longer-term resolution to this issue.”

Mr Rosenberg added: “Those currently being prosecuted include those who used social media to directly incite, but the Government needs to seriously consider how to ensure that social media ceases to be a cesspit where racists and extremists destroy social cohesion.

In response to i‘s investigation, Robinson, who runs the Urban Scoop news website, said: “[No one] cares what your fake news media prints. We are the media now. We want our country back [and] your slanderous boring articles will not deter us. But yes we are going to unite the UK [and] the world against jihad.

NDA allies JD(U), LJP criticise Assam CM Himanta Sarama's decision to scrap Friday break for Muslim MLAs

Sep 01, 2024

NDA allies JDU and LJP disagreed with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and criticised the state Assembly’s decision to discontinue the two-hour break on Fridays for Muslim MLAs to offer namaz.

"The decision made by the Assam chief minister is against the core principles of the country's Constitution. Every religious belief has the right to preserve its traditions. I want to ask CM Sarma: You are imposing a ban on Friday holidays during Ramzan and claim that this will increase work efficiency. A significant part of Hindu tradition is the Maa Kamakhya Temple - can you impose a ban on the practice of sacrifice there?" he said.

Senior JDU member K C Tyagi said the Preamble of the Constitution provides for liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship. He added that no one should do something that hurts the spirit of the Constitution and the religious sentiments of people.

4 from Azad party quit poll fight: Move to 'prevent vote split, help NC-Cong alliance'

Muzaffar Raina

01.09.24

Four candidates from former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s party have withdrawn nominations for the upcoming Assembly polls to prevent a “vote split” and “help secular parties”, in an apparent setback for the BJP.

Azad’s Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) was widely dubbed as the BJP’s B-team and it faced allegations that it had joined the contest to split the “secular vote” and help the saffron party. He had dumped the Congress following serious differences with the top brass of the party.

“A wrong narrative was created that we are the BJP’s B-group. I am personally with the secular forces and cannot tolerate that somebody will level such allegations against us, more so saying we are close to the BJP,” said Mohammad Aslam Goni, former advocate-general who became a DPAP leader.

The party’s chief spokesman Salman Nizami said he had directed the candidates to withdraw their nominations if they were not in a winning position.

NC MP calls for Indo-Pak dialogue on Kashmir

Aug 31, 2024

SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi reaffirmed Saturday his party’s call for resumption of dialogue and diplomatic ties with Pakistan to resolve what he called the “unsettled issue” of Kashmir. “People of J&K believe that settling the situation here permanently needs a proper dialogue between Pakistan and India,” he said.

However, external affairs minister S Jaishankar had said earlier in the week that “the era of uninterrupted dialogue is over” and cautioned Pakistan about the repercussions it would face if it continued to support terrorist attacks against India.

J&K’s first assembly elections in a decade are being held amid a rise in Pakistan-backed terrorism. The escalation resulted in 18 security force fatalities since May and the killing of over 20 Pakistani terrorists in counteroffensives.

GAZA August 31. 2024 (Saba) - The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine on Saturday blessed the qualitative double operation carried out by heroic resistance fighters in the "Gush Etzion" settlement, north of Hebron, which caused a number of injuries among the enemy soldiers, including an officer.

Is Iran’s anti-Israel and American rhetoric all bark and no bite?

August 31, 2024

On August 27, Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, told the newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, and his cabinet that talking to the enemy may be useful.

In a thinly veiled reference to Iran’s engagement with the international community – and specifically the United States – Khamenei said Iran should not pin its hopes on such engagement, but that is no reason not to hold talks with the enemy.

This is the kind of green light that Pezeshkian needs to engage again with the International Atomic Energy Agency and Western countries on Iran’s nuclear program, and to engage with international interlocutors over its heightened tensions with Israel.

This statement seems to signal a desire to walk back from the brink of an all-out war with Israel over the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh on Iranian soil in July and revert back to the mutual deterrence that had defined their relationship for years.

In April of this year, Israel targeted Iran’s embassy complex in Damascus, killing members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

This led to a carefully choreographed Iranian response. Iran could not ignore the Israeli attack, which the authorities condemned as an assault on Iranian sovereign territory, but did not wish to go into war with Israel. As a result, Iran reportedly gave advance warning of its impending response, which allowed Israel and its allies to shoot down most of the 300-odd missiles and drone fired from Iran.

Aviva says India unit 'engaging' with authorities over tax investigation

Aditya Kalra

31 Aug 202

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - British insurer Aviva said on Saturday its India unit is "actively engaging" with local authorities in connection with alleged tax evasion practices.

Reuters reported on Friday that an Indian tax agency has found that Aviva India breached local regulations capping commissions to sales agents with a system of fake invoices and clandestine cash payments between 2017 and 2023.

Aviva's India business paid about $26 million to entities who purportedly provided marketing and training services, but they did not perform any work and were actually a front for channeling funds to Aviva's agents, the tax agency said in a Aug. 3 notice reviewed by Reuters.

Muttaqi urges Islamic countries to help release Afghan assets

August 31, 2024

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi has called on Islamic countries to help release the assets of Afghanistan’s central bank and lift the travel ban on the leaders of the Islamic Emirate.

Speaking at the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Cameroon, Muttaqi said that the freezing of the funds had slowed economic growth and reduced regional trade.

“We hope that wartime behavior will not be carried over to peacetime,” he said. “Is it reasonable for a host country to have to get permission from the United Nations to invite a country’s foreign minister? Doesn’t this kind of coercive behavior call into question the fairness of the prevailing international order?”

‘A Bit Of A Scare’: New Muslim Group To Pressure LaborIn A Dozen Victorian Seats

Rachel Eddie

September 1, 2024

Nail Aykan is sick of politicians getting photo opportunities at a Turkish restaurant or speaking to one kebab shop owner and thinking they can rely on Muslim people for their votes.

It’s why Aykan organised the Muslim Voices of Calwell group to engage with candidates in the electorate in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

And it’s why he will argue the merits of a hung parliament at the campaign launch of another group – Muslim Votes Matter – at Broadmeadows Town Hall on Sunday.

The group is looking closely at 12 federal seats in Victoria at the next election, which is due by May: Calwell, Wills, Bruce, Scullin, Holt, Lalor, Gorton, Gellibrand, Fraser, Isaacs, Cooper and Hawke.

All of them are held by Labor. “With enough momentum we need to give every candidate a bit of a scare to say, ‘Do not take us for granted’,” Aykan said.

Labor has been trying to contain anger over the war in Gaza in key electorates that have thousands of Muslim voters. At the 2021 census, such voters constituted about 24 per cent of people in Calwell and 10 per cent in the at-risk seat of Wills.

“The unfortunate consequence ... for the Labor Party is that most of our community resides in seats held by the Labor Party, so most of our advocacy work is going to be against Labor,” Muslim Votes Matter national representative GhaithKrayem said.

But he said it would devise how-to-vote cards for a smaller list of target seats, with rankings more focused on the policies of parties than the individual views of candidates.

“The government has made it clear in the last 10 months that individual members of parliament have almost no ability to influence government policy,” Krayem said.

West Australian senator Fatima Payman quit the parliamentary Labor Party in July after she was suspended for voting against the government on a Greens motion calling for immediate recognition of the Palestinian state. In NSW, a parliamentary secretary was demoted for calling the state’s police commissioner a liar over the behaviour of officers at pro-Palestinian protests.

“So having candidates who hold individual views means nothing if they are not allowed to express those views on behalf of their constituents in parliament,” Krayem said.

Labor MP Peter Khalil, whose Wills electorate office in Coburg has been repeatedly targeted by pro-Palestine protesters, has publicly come out against that organisation.

Khalil, recently appointed the special envoy for social cohesion, has said they ignored Labor’s breaking with the United States to back a ceasefire at the United Nations, calls for unimpeded aid, demands for Israel to respect humanitarian law, and affirming Australia’s role in a peace process.

Muslims Were Reliably Democratic Voters. With US Gaza Policy, That’s Changed

By Mike Ludwig

August 31, 2024

As expected, the Democratic presidential ticket got a boost in support from the nation’s 2.5 million registered Muslim voters after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. However, more than a third are still planning to vote for a third-party candidate after the Democratic National Convention (DNC) left simmering anger over U.S. support for Israel’s war on Gaza largely unaddressed.

Up to 69 percent of registered Muslims report voting primarily for the Democratic Party, but third-party presidential candidates who oppose sending weapons to Israel have roughly cut that majority in half, according to two national surveys released by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Thursday.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Green Party candidate Jill Stein are virtually tied, with about 29 percent of Muslims planning to vote for each candidate, according to a survey of 1,159 voters conducted shortly after the DNC. Another 4 percent plan to vote for Cornel West, the unaffiliated antiwar candidate who is still fighting to be on the ballot in multiple states.

Just over 11 percent plan to vote for Republican Donald Trump, and 16 percent remain undecided. Only 8 percent said they are not planning to vote in November.

“This is showing that Muslim voters who traditionally in the last election voted over 60 percent for Biden, that 60 percent has evenly split now between two candidates who have two very different messages that are addressing their concerns,” said Robert McCaw, CAIR’s director of government affairs, during a press conference Thursday.

The contrast between Stein and Harris is clear. Stein, a Jewish anti-Zionist, is urging voters to “abandon pro-genocide candidates” and was arrested during a police crackdown on a Palestine solidarity protest at Washington University in St. Louis earlier this year. Harris works directly under Biden, the top architect of U.S. policy on Gaza, where an Israeli assault and siege has left more than 40,600 people dead despite months of U.S.-led negotiations over a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

While Harris has attempted to speak on Gaza with more compassion than Biden, the DNC and the protests raging outside came and went without signaling any shift in White House policy around arming Israel.

Harris briefly acknowledged the intense suffering in Gaza and called for Palestinian “self-determination” during her nomination speech at the DNC in Chicago last week. Meanwhile, thousands of people marched past the DNC demanding an end to U.S. support for Israel and accusing the Biden administration of complicity in genocide.

As Harris spoke, Uncommitted delegates and Palestinian Democrats staged a sit-in outside the DNC after officials refused to allow a Palestinian speaker on the main stage, despite giving families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas a prime-time slot. Polling suggests that up to 75 percent of Democrats now oppose Israel’s war on Gaza and sympathize with Palestinians in much larger numbers than in the past, and refusing to allow a Palestinian to speak at the DNC was broadly seen as an unforced error.

However, there has been a major shift toward Harris among Muslim voters since Biden dropped out the race last month. A CAIR survey of 2,850 Muslim voters conducted while Biden was still running in late May and July found that nearly 60 percent planned to vote for a third-party candidate, with 36 percent supporting Stein and 25 percent supporting West. At the time, 94 percent disapproved of Biden’s overall job performance, and 95 percent disapproved of Congress’s job performance.

“[Biden] dropping out increased the chances of success for the Democratic Party, at least within the Muslim community,” McCaw said.

While the poll shows substantial improvement for Democrats since July, McCaw said Muslim voters remain “deeply dissatisfied” with the state of the nation — and especially with U.S. foreign policy on Israel and Palestine, which ranks as the top issue motivating Muslim voters this election cycle. The Muslim community is very diverse, and the polling shows serious concern for the human rights of Muslims all over the world, including the ethnic minorities facing violence and oppression in India, China and Burma.

In fact, 64 percent of Muslims surveyed by CAIR in May and July said they “strongly disagree” with claims that the U.S. government “promotes human rights and justice globally.” Only 1 percent felt that they “strongly agree.” International human rights is the top issue motivating Muslim voters, followed by religious freedom and health care access.

The unprecedented support for third-party candidates is still a major concern for Democrats attempting to woo Muslim voters in crucial swing states, particularly Michigan, where the state’s large Arab and Muslim population turned out in large numbers to cast protest votes against Biden in the Democratic primary. With nearly 250,000 Muslim residents, even low turnout among voters could swing the state in Trump’s direction.

McCaw said life in the U.S. has changed for many Muslims since Israel’s war on Gaza began. In its annual civil rights report, CAIR details 8,000 incidents of anti-Muslim hate and bias that were submitted by individuals across the country in 2023, including reports of discrimination in employment, education and the immigration system. Since the October 7 attacks sparked Israel’s revenge campaign in Gaza, CAIR received hundreds of reports from Muslim students who say they faced intimidation or arrest colleges campuses as protests erupted in recent months, according to McCaw.

The anger, grief and frustration among Muslim voters is visible in the poll numbers, and third-party candidates are primed to take advantage. However, a plurality of Muslim voters (40 percent) identify is “moderate” politically, while nearly 30 percent identify as “conservative” and 19 percent identify as “liberal,” according to the CAIR survey. The broad support for Stein, a left-wing candidate who is often seen as a spoiler by Democrats, is not set in stone.

Gaza is the top priority for Muslim voters heading into November, and they were clearly responsive to Biden’s decision to drop out of the race. Harris acknowledged the suffering in Gaza and saw her support among Muslims swell in the days afterward, but in an interview this week, she signaled that she is not open to withholding weapons from Israel. Whether she can win back Muslim voters without a change in policy remains to be seen.

‘All For The Sake Of A Political Stunt’: Vice President Kamala Slams Trump For His Arlington CemeteryVisit

Sep 1, 2024

Vice president Kamala Harris hit out at former President Donald Trump and his campaign for disrespecting a "sacred ground, all for the sake of a political stunt." Taking a dig at the former president's visit to the Arlington National Cemetery, Kamala Harris took to X and said that was a "place where we come together to honor American heroes" and "not for politics."

"If there is one thing on which we as Americans can all agree, it is that our veterans, military families, and service members should be honoured, never disparaged, and treated with nothing less than our highest respect and gratitude," Harris wrote.

The first comments from the vice president on this come after it was reported that an altercation erupted between a female cemetery official and a Trump staffer earlier this week. Trump took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to commemorate three years since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. He was joined by Gold Star families whose family members died.

Harris strongly criticised Trump for breaking cemetery rules barring photography for political purposes. Trump's campaign shared images showing him grinning and giving a thumbs-up among headstones, which Harris termed a disrespect to sacred ground.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the US Army confirmed a staff member at the cemetery was "abruptly pushed aside" after asking Trump's team to stop filming in a restricted area. This section is reserved for those killed in recent wars, where photography for political purposes is banned.

The Trump campaign described the employee as a "despicable individual" and claimed she was experiencing a mental health episode. However, the military stated that the staff member had acted with professionalism and condemned the incident as "unfortunate."

Former President Trump has suggested he might support a Florida ballot measure to legalise recreational marijuana for adults, known as Amendment 3, reported the Hill.

Trump, a Florida resident, emphasised the importance of this measure being appropriately managed by the state Legislature to avoid public consumption issues.

“In Florida, like so many other States that have already given their approval, personal amounts of marijuana will be legalised for adults with Amendment 3,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social site. “Whether people like it or not, this will happen through the approval of the Voters, so it should be done correctly.”

Four states ‘commit’ $27bn investment in years ahead, claims Ahsan

Khalid Hasnain

September 1, 2024

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal says that four countries have allocated $27 billion for investment through launching various mega projects in Pakistan under framework of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

“The SIFC is a very useful institution and framework under which our four brother countries have allocated $27bn for investment. Saudi Arabia allocated $5bn, UAE and Kuwait $10bn each and Azerbaijan $2bn,” he said while responding to various questions at a press conference in Lahore on Saturday. “And this is the vision of our Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who wants investment from friendly countries instead of getting loans from them,” he added.

The minister said the investment is expected to be made within the next two to four years, as, presently, the government is busy in preparing feasibilities for various projects.

According to him, Pakistan seeks trade, not loans, from China and Saudi Arabia. These two countries have consistently provided unconditional support in times of need since the existence of Pakistan. He said talks with the IMF were underway and soon an agreement would be finalised.

Nawaz seeks talks among all parties, govt, institutions

Zulqernain Tahir

September 1, 2024

LAHORE: Amid efforts by the coalition government to woo a former key ally, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif has proposed an across-the-board dialogue involving all political parties, including the PTI, as well as the state institutions to steer Pakistan out of crises.

The proposal to take everyone on board was floated amid attempts by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to court their former ally, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who had announced a solo flight against the government earlier this month.

During a meeting of the party’s top brass at the Model Town headquarters on Saturday, the PML-N bigwigs discussed a host of issues, including the recent relief to power consumers, local bodies reforms in Punjab, and reorganisation of the ruling party in Punjab. Another issue that the meeting pondered upon was the strategy to deal with the rival PTI, which is facing the ire of the powers that be following the May 9 riots.

A statement issued by the PML-N after the meeting quoted the elder Sharif as saying: “All political parties, governments, and institutions should join hands in decision-making. [They] …need to sit together to steer the country out of crises.”

This statement came amid reports that PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah has been tasked to approach Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai — who heads the PTI-dominated opposition alliance for constitutional supremacy — for talks.

Clarifying speculations on his recent meeting with Mr Achakzai, PML-N leader Sanaullah told Dawn: “I met Achakzai sahib as he is a veteran politician who stood with the PML-N leadership during testing times. I relayed to him Nawaz Sharif’s regard for him and asked him to get along with the PML-N.”

He said neither Mr Achakzai nor the PML-N was under any impression that the former was mandated to speak on behalf of Imran Khan. According to Rana Sanaullah, no one from the PML-N approached the PTI for talks. “How come we seek dialogue with PTI when it categorically said it would not hold talks with us,” Mr Sanaullah questioned.

Speaking about the Saturday meeting, Mr Sanaullah said: “Today, Mian sahib asked all political parties, including the PTI, and institutions, including the army and judiciary, to work jointly to address people’s issues, especially those related to the economy.” He said Nawaz Sharif’s stance had not changed from the one he spoke about at the Minar-i-Pakistan rally upon his homecoming.

Even though the PML-N president favoured talks with all parties, some senior party leaders ruled out talks with the PTI. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, the PML-N secretary general, told reporters after the Model Town meeting that there would be no talks with the PTI until it apologised for the May 9 mayhem that targeted military installations.

Speaker Berri on Imam Al-Sadr Disappearance Anniversary: Lebanon Faces Israeli Aggression; West Bank Escalation Mirrors Gaza

August 31, 2024

Lebanese Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, stressed that there will be no compromise regarding the disappearance of Imam Sayyed Moussa Al-Sadr and his two companions, Sheikh Mohammad Yaacoub and journalist Abbas Badreddine.

During his speech on the 46th anniversary of Imam Al-Sadr’s disappearance, Speaker Berri reiterated the pledge of loyalty and commitment, declaring that there will be no compromise, negotiation, or settlement except with the return of Imam Al-Sadr and his companions and the full disclosure of all aspects of this ongoing crime, shrouded in mystery for 46 years.

Berri asserted that “the longer this crime remains unresolved, the more it becomes evident that those who carried it out are complicit in it. Only those who viewed Imam Al-Sadr and his humanitarian mission as a threat to their divisive, sectarian, and racist agendas have gained from this injustice. Foremost among these agendas is the Israeli project, which now manifests in its most abhorrent forms in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.”

Speaker Berri said that the events in the West Bank are no less dangerous than those in Gaza, compounded by the desecration of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Al-Quds (Jerusalem), including the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Berri further noted that the Israeli occupation’s political and military leadership aims to expand the cycle of destruction, terror, and violence beyond Palestinian geography.

Additionally, Speaker Berri emphasized that the Israeli enemy has transformed the Lebanese border villages adjacent to occupied Palestine into scorched land, employing internationally banned weapons such as phosphorus, cluster, and concussion bombs. He noted that the enemy is systematically destroying homes and vital infrastructure, burning agricultural and forested areas, and targeting ambulances.

Berri noted that `Israel` has repeatedly expanded the scope of its aggression into Lebanese territory, including Beirut’s southern suburbs, Sidon, Tyre, and the Bekaa regions of West Bekaa, Mid Bekaa, Baalbek, and Hermel.

Floods in Nigeria kill scores and wash away farmland raising food insecurity

01-09-2024

Weeks of flooding have killed nearly 200 people in Nigeria and washed away homes and farmlands, the country's disaster management agency said, further threatening food supplies, especially in the hard-hit northern region.

The floods blamed on poor infrastructure and badly maintained dams have killed 185 people and displaced 208,000 in 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states, the National Emergency Management Agency said in an update Friday, triggering frantic efforts to evacuate hundreds of thousands to makeshift shelters.

Nigeria records flooding every year mostly as a result of failure to follow environmental guidelines and inadequate infrastructure. The worst floods the country has seen in a decade were in 2022 when more than 600 people were killed and over 1 million displaced.

However, unlike in 2022 when the floods were blamed on heavier rainfall, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicted delayed or normal rains in most parts of the country this year and said the current floods were more a result of human activities.

Mpox cases in Nigeria reach 48 in at least 20 states

01-09-2024

The number of monkeypox (mpox) cases in Nigeria has reached 48, with the virus now detected in Abuja and 20 other states, according to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Despite the rising cases, no deaths have been reported.

On August 27, Nigeria received 10,000 vaccine doses from the United States to aid in controlling the outbreak. To further prevent the virus's spread, a health declaration form for international travelers has been introduced.

Mpox is transmitted through contact with infected rodents, individuals, or contaminated objects. Symptoms typically develop 5 to 21 days after exposure, including fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, and skin lesions.

While there is no specific treatment, antiviral drugs can help manage the disease. Most cases are mild, with recovery expected within a few weeks.
