Ahead Of Ramadan, Muslim Leaders Ask Centre To Ensure Freedom Of Religion

Feb 15, 2026

During the holy month, Muslims devote more time to prayers in mosques and acts of charity.

----------

Muslim leaders in Kashmir have urged the government to ensure freedom of religion and refrain from imposing restrictions on major religious occasions during the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The holy month begins this week, during which Muslims observe dawn-to-dusk fasting, abstaining from food, water and smoking.

At a conclave held in Budgam, religious leaders from both Shia and Sunni sects passed a resolution expressing concern over what they call the targeting of Muslims in the country, as well as the bulldozing of mosques and private property. The leaders said that they intend to raise these issues during their sermons in the month.

During the holy month, Muslims devote more time to prayers in mosques and acts of charity.

"We expect that the government will not impose any restrictions during the month of Ramadan. Whether it's Friday congregations, sacred nights or Eid congratulations at Jamia Masjid," said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq after the conclusion of the meeting.

He said the religious conglomerate passed a resolution expecting the government to restore the religious rights of Muslims and avoid interference in spiritual affairs. "We expect the government to facilitate religious practices during Ramadan rather than interfering in religious affairs."

The conclave, according to Mirwaiz, discussed turmoil in the Muslim world, especially the situation in Palestine and Iran.

"We expressed our concern over the oppression of Palestinians. As far as Iran is concerned, attempts are being made to cause political disturbances there," said Mirwaiz.

On the situation of Muslims in the country, the religious leaders say they will raise the issue of the targeting of Muslims and mosques. According to Mirwaiz, Muslims in India are passing through testing times amid rising polarisation.

"It's not a secret that the situation in our country is not so good. Communal forces are targeting Muslims, mosques are being bulldozed, and the property of Muslims is being vandalised. These are the issues we must talk about and become the voice of the oppressed who cannot raise their voice," said Mirwaiz.

Palestinian NGO condemns Israeli act of ‘revenge’ after prisoner abuse video

February 14, 2026

-------------

RAMALLAH: A Palestinian NGO has denounced what it called an Israeli act of revenge after a video showed far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir overseeing the abuse of detainees in a military prison.

Just days before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Ben Gvir held a tour of Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank, Israel’s Channel 7 reported.

In footage filmed on Friday and broadcast by the channel, around 20 police officers are seen storming a hallway leading to prison cells, brandishing their weapons and firing stun grenades.

They then pull five detainees from their cells, their hands tied behind their backs, forcing them face-down onto the floor.

The operation took place as a bill proposing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners convicted of terrorism awaited a final vote in the Israeli parliament.

“This is all part of ongoing displays meant to take revenge on Palestinian detainees,” Abdallah al?Zaghari, head of the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club, told AFP on Saturday.

“Everything Ben Gvir and the far?right government are doing affects not only the Palestinian people and prisoners in detention camps — it also impacts the global legal and human rights system,” he added.

Ben Gvir, known for his inflammatory rhetoric, is considered one of the most hard-line members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition.

“It is simply a source of pride — arriving at a prison like this, a prison for terrorists, the vilest of the vile, seeing them like this,” Ben Gvir said in the video.

“I want one more thing: to execute them — the death penalty for terrorists,” he added.

Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Saturday said the remarks were “a new war crime and a blatant challenge to international humanitarian law regarding prisoners.”

International rights groups have repeatedly warned of alleged abuse and mistreatment inflicted in Israeli prisons since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

While the death penalty exists for a small number of crimes in Israel, it has become a de facto abolitionist country, with the Nazi Holocaust perpetrator Adolf Eichmann the last person to be executed in 1962.

Supreme Court calls on Muslims in Saudi Arabia to look for Ramadan crescent moon on Tuesday evening

February 15, 2026

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court called on all Muslims throughout the Kingdom to look for the crescent moon of Ramadan on Tuesday evening. (File/AFP)

-------------

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court called on all Muslims throughout the Kingdom to look for the crescent moon of Ramadan on Tuesday evening.

The court requested that anyone who sights the crescent moon, whether with the naked eye or using binoculars, to report it to the nearest court and register their testimony or contact the nearest center for assistance in reaching the nearest court, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The court hopes that those capable of sighting the crescent will join the committees formed in their regions for this purpose, benefiting all Muslims.

Tuesday corresponds to Shabaan 29. If the crescent moon is sighted on Tuesday night, Ramadan will start on Wednesday. If the crescent is not sighted, Ramadan will start on Thursday and there will be 30 days in Shabaan.

Imam threatened girls with 'black magic' as he carried out horrific sex attacks on girls as young as 12

Abdul Halim Khan is facing jail(Image: Metropolitan Police/PA)

------------

An imam who carried out horrific sex attacks on women and girls after threatening them with black magic is facing jail.

Abdul Halim Khan, 54, pretended to possess spiritual powers while a respected faith leader based in Tower Hamlets, east London. Khan told his victims they would be possessed by a Jinn - a supernatural spirit in Islam.

He also threatened them with 'black magic' if they told friends or family what he had done. Khan abused seven victims as young as 12 after persuading them to meet him in isolated places and the imam was finally arrested after his youngest victim reported him to a teacher at her school in 2017.

Met detectives interviewed more than 50 witnesses as part of their investigation. Khan, of Bethnal Green, east London, repeatedly denied the allegations claiming the victims had all conspired against him but he was convicted of 21 charges of rape and sexual assault as well as child sexual offences against seven women and girls between 2004 and 2015, at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Khan was remanded in custody ahead of sentence on 14 May. Follow the verdict, one of the victims thanked the Met's investigation team for restoring their trust.

She said: "The abuse I suffered as a child has had a profound and lasting impact on my life. What happened to me did not end when the abuse stopped, it affected my sense of safety, my ability to trust others, and the way I understood relationships and authority.

"Someone who should never have harmed me violated that trust, and the effects of that betrayal have stayed with me for many years and I continue to carry that trauma with me. Like many survivors of childhood sexual abuse, I lived with shame, fear, and confusion that were not mine to carry.

"The loss of trust, in people, in systems, and at times in myself, shaped much of my adult life. Coming forward was an extremely difficult decision. Speaking about what happened meant revisiting painful memories and facing emotions I had tried to suppress for years.

"However, being listened to, believed, and treated with dignity throughout the investigation helped restore some of the trust that had been taken from me. I am grateful to the Metropolitan Police officers who handled my case with care, professionalism, and sensitivity.

"I hope this outcome acknowledges not only the abuse itself, but the deep and lasting harm it causes. I also hope it encourages other survivors of childhood sexual abuse to know that they are not alone, they are not to blame, and that what happened to them matter, regardless of how much time has passed."

Detective Sergeant Sara Yems, who led the investigation, said: "It shows remarkable strength for anyone to report abuse, especially when the abuser is believed to be a trusted figure. The seven woman who came forward have shown extraordinary courage in speaking with police and I hope they serve as inspiration to other victims and survivors.

"While nothing will undo the harm suffered by these women - yesterday's conviction will hopefully offer a small measure of comfort. I'd like to thank the dedicated team of Met officers who left no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

"We remain absolutely committed to tackling violence against women and girls, targeting dangerous offenders and removing them from London's streets."

Melissa Garner, Specialist Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Abdul Halim Khan a former Imam abused his position of trust and authority to carry out a vicious series of rapes and sexual abuses against seven victims including three vulnerable teenage girls.

"Khan coerced and deceived them into thinking that he possessed supernatural powers which could protect them and their families from harm in exchange for hideous acts of sexual abuse without their consent. The lifelong physical and emotional trauma caused to victims by men like Khan cannot be understated.

"We would like to thank the victims in this case for coming forward and reporting this devastating crime. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that the CPS will relentlessly pursue justice and prosecute those who sexually exploit women and children, whenever that abuse took place.

"I encourage any victims of child sexual abuse and sexual violence to report the crimes committed against them to the police. You are not alone and there is always help available."

Trump hails ‘Board of Peace’, announces over $5billion pledged by member states for Gaza aid

Feb 15, 2026

US President Donald Trump on Sunday hailed his newly formed initiative, the “Board of Peace”, describing it as his self-designed effort to advance global peace negotiations. Boasting of his role as chairman, Trump said the body has “unlimited potential” and asserted that his vision for ending the conflict in Gaza was “unanimously adopted by the United Nations Security Council.” He also announced that member states have pledged more than $5 billion for humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Gaza.

In a lengthy post on his platform Truth Social, Trump said the board had facilitated humanitarian aid “at record speed” and secured the release of all hostages, both living and deceased. He added that last month, “two dozen distinguished founding members joined me in Davos, Switzerland, to celebrate its official formation, and present a bold vision for the civilians in Gaza, and then, ultimately, far beyond Gaza — world peace!”

Trump also announced that he will be joined by board members at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C., on February 19 where he expects to declare that member states have pledged “more than $5 billion towards the Gaza humanitarian and reconstruction efforts.”

He said thousands of personnel have committed to the International Stabilization Force and local police “to maintain security and peace for Gazans.”

Emphasizing that “Hamas must uphold its commitment to full and immediate demilitarisation,” the US President described the Board of Peace as “the most consequential international body in history” and said “it is my honour to serve as its chairman.”

According to Trump’s 20point plan, first announced in September and paving the way for the current ceasefire, the Board of Peace “will set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza.”

The plan, which was later endorsed by the UN Security Council under Resolution 2803 in November 2025, envisions a multinational International Stabilization Force being deployed once Hamas lays down its weapons and a transitional Palestinian governance committee overseen by the board takes over daytoday administration of the enclave.

More than 20 countries have reportedly joined the Board of Peace, and Donald Trump will serve as its chairman., the New York Times reported.

According to AFP, while the US president has repeatedly characterised the initiative as a major milestone in his foreign policy agenda to restore long sought peace in the region, its creation and structure have drawn broad international scrutiny. Some Western allies had declined to join or expressed caution about its governance model.

Critics note that Hamas has historically resisted disarmament, calling it a red line in negotiations even while signalling possible conditional cooperation with a future Palestinian authority.

The Supreme Council For Shari’ah In Nigeria’s Highway To National Disintegration

16 Feb, 2026

The recent declaration by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria—calling for the removal of the current Chairman, Prof. Joash Amuputan of the Independent National Electoral Commission, and threatening non-recognition of any election conducted under him—does not merely challenge a public official. It challenges the most sensitive aspect of Nigeria’s democracy. Without elections, there is no democracy!

In his 2020 legal brief, “Genocide in Nigeria-The implication for the International Community”, Prof. Joash Amuputan claimed that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide, citing violence by Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen. The SCSN declaration has introduced the most extreme case of political Islam, in which, after all due diligence is applied and candidates are voted on by the Senate and approved by the president, a final religious veto can be wielded. A veto so consequential that it could lead to national disintegration. Non-recognition of any election by the Muslim Ummah would mean a global contestation of political power between Islamic and non-Islamic countries. This would inevitably lead to violence, chaos, and the destruction of Nigeria’s fragile democracy.

Let us be clear: in a democracy, disagreement is not a threat. Protest is not a sin. Criticism of public officials is not only permitted but necessary. Nigeria’s democracy is young, imperfect, and often bruised by its own contradictions. Yet it remains one of the few shared spaces where citizens of different tongues, creeds, and histories meet as equals. Nigerian Christians and Muslims have managed this complexity through healthy competition and political power-sharing. Even when traditional power-sharing agreements are flouted and Muslim-Muslim presidential tickets emerge, Christian politicians still vote massively for such candidates. In the past, when candidates for ministerial appointment were alleged to be tainted by Islamic extremism, such as Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, who was alleged to have expressed support for the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, he was still appointed to one of the most sensitive cabinet positions in the Nigerian government. This was not a weakness. It was the ability to manage diversity with sensitivity.

Throughout the histories of FEDECO, NEC, and INEC, the Chairmen have always been professors and jurists, mostly from the South-South and Eastern Zones. The roll call: Justice Victor Ovie-Whisky, 1980-1983; Prof. Eme Awa, 1987-1989; Sumner Dagogo-Jack, 1994-1998; Justice Ephraim Akpata, 1998-2000; Dr Abel Goubadia, 2000-2005; and Prof. Maurice Iwu, 2005-2010. In 2010, with a South-South President, Goodluck Jonathan, the Chairmanship moved to the Northern Zones for the first time. Professor Attahiru Jega served two terms, 2010-2015, and then the Chairmanship moved to the North-East: Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu served two more terms, 2015-2025. These northern intellectuals were Muslims. Now, with the North Central Zone having a Chairman of INEC from Kogi State, a Christian, Prof. Joash Amuputan, the loud dissent from the Sharia Council is framed in the vocabulary of faith as a collective command to delegitimise future elections! This dissent, coming after the political due process is complete, appears to lose sight of our geopolitical sensitivity and the professor’s rights as a scholar and a legal luminary (Senior Advocate of Nigeria) to hold personal views and to represent clients in briefs. This dissent has moved from the realm of healthy civic engagement into the perilous territory of moral coercion and absolutism. This is not democracy; it is theocracy and the weaponisation of religion. It is Political Islam.

The politicisation and weaponisation of religion in the world today are rolling back democracy and giving rise to absolutism and dictatorship. Christian and Muslim countries are equally guilty. In the USA, for instance, the rise of Christian nationalism has been linked to the suppression of voter and minority rights and to challenges to secular governance. In Poland, the Law and Justice party, in alliance with Catholic conservative groups, is suppressing minority rights, the media, and free speech. In Hungary, the ruling Fidesz party has influenced the policies of Christian conservative groups on immigration and free speech.

Political Islam has enabled the formation of theocratic dictatorships, the suppression of dissent, and restrictions on freedoms and women’s rights, as evident in Iran since the 1979 revolution. In Pakistan, we see the rise of political Islam, which restricts free speech through blasphemy laws and promotes sectarian violence. In Turkey, President Erdogan’s political Islam has affected secularism and press and judicial freedoms. Nigeria does not need to follow these examples. We need not take this highway to national disintegration. We are a unique and delicate democracy, trying to weave a rich democratic tapestry from our rich diversity.

The ballot is not a Christian instrument. It is not a Muslim one. It is not the property of any sect, council, or cause. It is a civic covenant—fragile yet precious—that binds all Nigerians together in the simple, stubborn belief that our future should be chosen, not imposed. Threatening the legitimacy of that covenant on religious grounds risks turning political disagreement into a theological fault line. History, both within and beyond our borders, warns us of what happens when the sacred is conscripted to serve political grievance. It rarely ends in justice. It often ends in silence, fear, and the slow erosion of trust.

The question before us is not whether Professor Joash Amupitan, like any public servant, should be subject to scrutiny. Of course, he should. No office in a democracy is beyond examination. The question is how that scrutiny is pursued. Our constitution does not grant any group—religious, ethnic, or ideological—the authority to pre-empt the courts, the legislature, or the established mechanisms of accountability. It grants us institutions, imperfect as they may be, precisely so that disputes can be resolved without resorting to ultimatums.

There is a deeper, more troubling undertone in this episode: the growing temptation to define national loyalty through the lens of belief. This is not new. It has haunted our post-independence journey, appearing in different guises over time. Yet every time it resurfaces, it weakens the moral centre of our republic. It teaches young Nigerians that the path to influence lies not in argument, evidence, or civic participation, but in mobilising identity as a weapon. Faith, at its best, is a wellspring of conscience. It calls us to humility, restraint, and recognition of the dignity of those who do not share our convictions. When it is instead used as a megaphone for political pressure, it risks losing that moral altitude. It becomes another instrument in the crowded marketplace of power.

I write this not as a defender of any individual, but as a custodian, however modest, of a larger idea: that Nigeria’s future depends on our ability to argue without excommunicating, to disagree without delegitimising, and to demand accountability without threatening the foundations of the system that allows us to make such demands in the first place. If there are legal questions about the conduct or past statements of the INEC Chairman, the courts are there to address them. I believe Professors Attahiru Jega, Mahmoud Yakubu, and Joash Amuputan, my younger academic colleagues and the privileged few to serve as INEC Chairmen, stand with me on the larger idea and the bigger picture of a Nigeria that is an honourable and just society. Let us give Prof Joash Amuputan a chance to chair INEC in peace.

If there are concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, civil society, the media, and the legislature have roles to play. These are the channels through which democracies breathe. When we bypass them in favour of collective declarations of non-recognition, we risk suffocating the very system we claim to protect.

There is also a moral responsibility that comes with leadership—religious or otherwise—to weigh the consequences of public pronouncements. In a country where tensions can ignite with alarming speed, words can become sparks. Those who occupy platforms of influence, such as the Supreme Sharia Council, must ask themselves not only “Is this true?” and “Is this just?” but also “What will this do to the fragile peace we share?” Nigeria does not need another season of mutual suspicion. It needs a renewed commitment to the slow, often frustrating work of building institutions that outlast individuals and transcend identities. It needs voices that lower the temperature, not raise it; that widen the circle of belonging, not shrink it.

The test of our democracy is not whether we can hold elections in perfect harmony. It is whether, amid our disagreements, we can still recognise each other as fellow citizens bound by a common destiny. The ballot box, for all its flaws, remains one of the few places where that recognition is evident. To threaten it is to threaten ourselves. Let us, therefore, return to the harder, nobler path: lawful challenge, patient reform, and moral persuasion.

Let faith inspire our conscience, not commandeer our constitution. Let criticism sharpen our institutions, not fracture our unity. As one blessed with decades of national public service at the highest levels, I stand for a united, secular, and democratic Nigeria, a great Nigeria that teaches the world how to manage diversity. I do not support Political Christianity or Political Islam.

In the end, Nigeria’s future will not be secured by those who refuse to recognise an election, but by those willing to recognise in every other Nigerian a partner in the long, unfinished journey towards a more just, more inclusive, and more credible republic.

BNP in Bangladesh wins nearly half the votes, Jamaat a third

16 Feb 2026

The BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami recorded significant gains in vote share and seats compared to 1991, each rising by nearly 20 percentage points.

In the February 12 election, BNP secured 49.97 percent of the vote and won 209 seats, a sharp increase from the 30.81 percent vote share and 140 seats it achieved in 1991.

Jamaat also made remarkable progress, winning 31.76 percent of the vote and 68 seats this time, compared to just 12.13 percent of the votes and 18 seats in 1991, according to Election Commission data.

According to EC Public Relations Officer Ruhul Amin Mollik, in terms of vote share, the National Citizen Party, led by student and youth leaders of the July uprising, came in third. Fielding candidates in 32 constituencies, the party secured 3.05 percent of the vote. NCP contested the polls as part of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.

Islami Andolon Bangladesh, led by Charmonai Pir Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, competed in 257 constituencies and secured 2.70 percent of the vote.

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, a partner of the 11-party combine, gave tickets to candidates in 34 constituencies and got 2.09 percent of the vote.

Jatiya Party, which had representation in the past three parliaments, nominated candidates in 199 constituencies. The party failed to secure any seat in this election and got only 0.89 percent of the votes.

Altogether, 50 political parties took part in the polls and 44 of them received less than one percent votes.

Meanwhile, 275 independent candidates bagged 5.79 percent votes.

The EC did not release the popular vote count. However, based on the votes obtained by winning candidates and their nearest rivals, BNP and its allies secured around 3.73 crore votes, while Jamaat and its alliance partners got about 2.73 crore votes.

The EC said 59.44 percent out of 12.77 crore voters cast their votes in the February 12 polls.

PAST POLLS

In the 1991 polls, a total of 3,41,03,777 voters exercised their franchise. BNP obtained 1,05,07,549 votes, which was 30.81 percent of the total votes, and won 140 seats. It later formed the government with the unconditional support of Jamaat.

Jamaat secured 41,36,661 votes, amounting to 12.13 percent, and achieved success in 18 seats.

In June 1996, a total of 4,28,80,576 people cast their votes. BNP received 1,42,55,986 votes, or 33.60 percent, and won 116 seats, becoming the opposition party. Jamaat obtained 36,53,013 votes, which was 8.61 percent, and won three seats.

The total number of votes cast was 5,57,36,625 in 2001. BNP and Jamaat contested as members of the four-party alliance. BNP secured 2,28,33,978 votes (40.97 percent) and won 193 seats, while Jamaat obtained 23,85,361 votes (4.28 percent) and won 17 seats. The alliance went on to form the government.

In 2008, both parties again ran the race as part of the four-party combine. A total of 7,06,48,485 people voted in the polls. BNP obtained 2,27,57,101 votes (32.50 percent) and won 30 seats. Jamaat received 32,89,967 votes (4.70 percent) and won two seats.

Both parties boycotted the 2014 and 2024 polls.

In 2018, a total of 8,26,45,218 people cast votes in the election. BNP secured 99,77,319 votes (12.07 percent) and won six seats. Political analysts noted that these results did not reflect the party’s actual strength, as the polls were widely considered controversial due to ballot box stuffing on the night before the election and intimidation faced by BNP supporters from the then ruling Awami League.

Election expert Abdul Alim, also a former member of the Election Reform Commission, said years of repression against BNP, including thousands of cases, attacks, torture, disappearances, and even lawsuits against respected party figures, were not accepted by the public.

“The party chairperson was sick, imprisoned, and there were repeated attempts to break the party, yet it did not collapse. In this situation, public support grew, and so did voter turnout for BNP,” he explained.

On increasing voter turnout for Jamaat, Alim noted, “First their registration was cancelled. Since 2014, Jamaat has been outside elections. During the movement, an executive order banned them as a party. Despite this repression, they quietly reorganised. That also drew public interest.”

He added another factor, true for all parties, is the presence of swing voters.

Alim said, as a new political party, NCP received a respectable share of votes.

ASI to inform Delhi HC if it will hear representation against stopping namaz at Mughal masjid

Sohini Ghosh

Feb 15, 2026

Three-and-a-half years after the managing committee of the Delhi Waqf Board (DWB) challenged Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) decision to stop namaz at Mughal masjid located inside the Qutub Minar complex, the Delhi High Court has directed the ASI, under the Ministry of Culture, to seek instructions on whether it will hear or respond to a representation that the waqf board had made before it in May 2022.

The direction, which came on Friday, was issued even as the Supreme Court, in April 2023, had requested the HC to take up DWB’s petition – moved in 2022 – and “decide the same in accordance with law on its own merits as expeditiously as possible”.

The petitioner, the DWB managing committee, is seeking that ASI be restrained from obstructing or interfering in offering of namaz at the masjid. The ASI had reportedly stopped the religious practice on May 13, 2022.

While the Qutub Minar complex is a centrally-protected and UNESCO World Heritage site, the committee has contended that the masjid does not fall within the protected part of the monument.

While the complex was officially notified as a centrally-protected monument in

1914, the petitioner has referred to communications dating back to 1949 — from the then imam of the masjid to various authorities — to establish that the practice of offering namaz in the masjid was prevalent for decades.

It has also relied on a book, Monuments of Delhi, published in 1920, which refers to the mosque being in use at the time. The petitioner has further pointed out that the mosque was notified as a Waqf property on April 16, 1970, and the Act shall have an overriding effect over any other law to the contrary. The committee has contended that the namaz was stopped without any authority in law, and without showing any notification/order or notice, thus violating the principles of natural justice.

However, the Centre has submitted that the government’s gazette notification declaring the Qutub precincts as protected “prevails over the provisions of the Waqf Act, 1995” and the “land dedicated for pious & religious purpose is not immune from its vesting with the State”.

Days after namaz was stopped, the committee had made representations to the ASI, including the director general, as well as to the Mehrauli police station SHO. However, the ASI never responded to the representations.

Addressing the committee’s advocate, M Sufian Siddiqui, Justice Anish Dayal on Friday orally remarked, “We are familiar with Qutub Minar complex, this is not a run of the mill situation where an immediate order can be passed. Let them (ASI) take instructions if your (managing committee of DWB) representation can be considered… one of your grievances is that (you were not given an opportunity of hearing before the action was taken).”

Siddiqui, however, argued, “Even assuming it (Mughal masjid) is (within the protected precincts)… the statute gives me the power to perform namaz. And the moot question is, what procedure have they followed (to stop namaz)… They’ve not followed any procedure while carrying out this exercise of arbitrary stoppage of namaz on May 13, 2022.”

“Prior to that, it is undisputed that namaz was taking place. So… they have resorted to deliberate falsehoods and prevarications in their counter-affidavits by neither admitting nor disputing that they have stopped the performance of namaz in order to obviate the judicial scrutiny that would have followed from the court.”

The Centre, through the Ministry of Culture and ASI, in written submissions filed on July 25, 2025 and a reply filed in 2023, has told HC that the “Qutub Minar (World Heritage Site) is not a place of worship” and “since the time of its protection the said monument or any part of it, has not been used for any type of worship,” “since no one in continuous capacity offered prayers in the mosque”.

According to the Centre, the mosque “is a protected mosque as per the provisions of AMASR Act, 1958”, as it also falls within the fenced Qutub archaeological area.

The committee has, however, emphasised that there is “overwhelming evidence to prove that the mosque in question was under religious use, i.e., regular prayers were held at the said mosque at the time when the other structures in adjacent area were declared as centrally protected monuments”.

The Mughal period mosque, distinct with its 3 bulbous domes and situated on the right side of the eastern entrance gateway to the otherwise Mamluk and Tughlaq dynasty complex, is one of the two masjids situated in the complex, the other being Quwwat-Ul-Islam mosque.

In 2021, a civil court in Saket had rejected a suit seeking restoration of Hindu and Jain deities inside Quwwat Ul-Islam mosque. However, an appeal was filed before the district court, which continues to remain pending. The stoppage of namaz at the Mughal masjid had come months after the appeal was admitted by the district court.

Portrait Politics: Shaan e Hind, the Deputy Mayor from Malegaon who triggered a statewide controversy over Tipu’s portrait

Zeeshan Shaikh

Feb 16, 2026

A small portrait of Tipu Sultan displayed in her office has pushed 42 year old Shaan e Hind Nihal Ahmed from municipal politics into the centre of a statewide confrontation.

The Deputy Mayor of Malegaon found herself at the heart of a political storm after the portrait, visible during a television interview, sparked protests, drew in Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and led to a police case against Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal over remarks linked to the row. Violence followed in Pune.

“I don’t think I have done anything wrong by putting up a photo of Tipu Sultan who is a patriot. He is not some terrorist. He is a person who fought the British for his homeland and laid down his life. I see no issues in putting his picture up,” Hind says.

Whether the move was conviction or calculation is debated in Malegaon. Hind is no political novice. She is a three time corporator and the daughter of the late Nihal Ahmed, a five time Janata Dal MLA who dominated the city’s politics for decades. Local lore recalls how he once sidestepped a ban on political gatherings by sitting on a chair in the middle of a market while supporters walked alongside him, turning a rally into a moving speech.

Malegaon’s politics has long revolved around two families, that of Nihal Ahmed and that of the late Congress leader Shaikh Rasheed. Civic and Assembly power alternated between them. Nihal Ahmed was Malegaon’s first Mayor after it became a Municipal Corporation in 2002. Hind’s mother, Sajeda Nihal Ahmed, earlier headed the Municipal Council.

A law graduate, Hind was groomed to carry forward the family legacy alongside her brother Buland Iqbal. The deaths of both her father and brother in quick succession brought her to the forefront. She is married to Mustaqeem Dignity, a close associate of her late brother.

In 2023, she left the Janata Dal Secular, breaking down publicly as she protested the party’s decision under H D Deve Gowda to align with the BJP. She later joined the Samajwadi Party and contested the 2024 Assembly election, though unsuccessfully.

In a significant shift, Hind and her husband set aside years of rivalry with the Shaikh family and aligned with former MLA Shaikh Asif’s ISLAM party to counter the growing influence of Mufti Ismail, who won the Malegaon Central seat in 2019 and again in 2024. The alliance secured 40 seats in the corporation, enough to lead with outside support, paving the way for Hind’s elevation as Deputy Mayor on February 7.

Five days into her tenure, the Tipu portrait controversy erupted.

“The photo was gifted to me by my fellow Corporators. I want to state this that I have not removed the photo. It has been taken down only because my office has gone under renovation,” she says.

She also frames the portrait debate in personal and social terms. “I am an OBC woman who hails from a weaver community. We believe in taking everyone along. We have proposed building a statue of Shivaji Maharaj as well,” she says.

On whether the portrait will return, she remains guarded. “I am a socialist at heart. We will continue to put photos of all those who we believe adhered to or are representative of the Socialist ideology that we believe in,” Hind says.

White-collar terror probe links doctors to terrorist outfits with mule accounts frozen across Jammu and Kashmir

15.02.26

The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s unravelling of a ‘white-collar’ terror module has revealed that a group of doctors, radicalised since 2016, formed a new outfit named “Ansar Interim” to carry out subversive activities in Jammu and Kashmir, even as security agencies flagged an ecosystem of mule bank accounts misused by terror groups to move funds undetected.

Officials said on Sunday that the investigation into the module, now being probed by the National Investigation Agency, has exposed both an emerging operational network and a financial backbone that could support separatist and anti-national activities.

Security agencies have, over the past three years, identified and frozen more than 8,000 mule accounts operating in the region, exposing what officials described as a sophisticated network of money laundering.

They described these accounts as the "weakest yet most crucial link" in the cybercrime chain, as without them, the conversion of stolen money into untraceable cryptocurrency would be impossible.

Central security agencies have asked the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other law enforcement agencies to hold consultations with banks to curb the mushrooming of 'mule accounts' and identify middlemen, who facilitate such financial frauds, they said.

A single scammer is often supplied with 10 to 30 mule accounts at a time, and in many cases, bank accounts are opened in the name of fictitious companies, enabling large transactions of up to Rs 40 lakh in a single day without immediately raising alarms.

Officials said the money trail is deliberately messy, with the scammed money rapidly shifted through several accounts and broken into smaller transactions to avoid detection.

Central security agencies and other law enforcement organisations have emphasised that while mule account holders may not design the scams or speak to the victims, they are active facilitators of money laundering.

By sharing credentials and accepting commissions, they knowingly provide the "financial infrastructure" for transnational crime.

"The entire scam ecosystem depends on these accounts. Without a destination for the money, the scam fails at the first step. Those renting out their accounts are not just victims of circumstance; they are the engines of the crime," a senior official said.

A detailed study by central agencies has identified individuals in countries such as China, Malaysia, Myanmar and Cambodia directing people in the Union Territory to create private crypto wallets, often set up using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to avoid detection and requiring no Know Your Customer (KYC) or identity verification.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police has already suspended the use of VPNs in the Valley as it is a handy tool for terrorists as well as separatists to avoid detection.

The case also brings to light that Dr Umer-un Nabi — the man behind the wheel of the explosive-laden car that exploded outside the Red Fort on November 10, killing over a dozen people — had unsuccessfully attempted to join terror groups in 2016 and 2018, officials said.

Piecing together evidence gathered so far, officials said the accused doctors — Muzamil Gannie, Umer-un Nabi (now dead), and Adeel Rather, along with his brother Muzzafar Rather (absconding), as well as Maulvi Irfan, Qari Aamir, and Tufail Gazi met at Eidgah in downtown Srinagar in April 2022.

During the meeting, they decided to form a terror organisation "Ansar Interim," with Adeel named as the 'Ameer' (chief) of the group, Maulvi Irfan as 'Deputy Ameer,' and Gannie as treasurer, officials said, adding that among militant groups, "Ansar" is commonly associated with the globally banned terror outfit Al-Qaeda.

The arrested doctors and preachers told interrogators that the need to form a new group emerged because all their contacts with active terrorists had been severed, officials said. Roles and operational codes were assigned to members during the meeting.

Umer assumed the role of coordinator and, along with Gannie, handled finances and procurement.

It was in 2023 that the group decided to acquire fertiliser from the Sohna and Nuh areas of Haryana. On the instructions of Umer, NPK (commonly known as Potassium Nitrate in this context) was also procured from a chemical shop in Faridabad.

During interrogation, the arrested doctors said Umer began watching online videos to learn rudimentary Improvised Explosive Device (IED) construction and had managed to prepare Triacetone Triperoxide (TATP), one of the most notable peroxide explosives used as filling for IEDs in several terrorist attacks.

According to officials, Adeel had started to look for members for the new terror group and roped in an individual named Danish, alias Jasir, from south Kashmir.

Adeel took Danish to a rented accommodation within Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where both saw Umer and Gannie preparing TATP explosive materials.

Umer later tried to persuade Danish to carry out a 'fidayeen' (suicide) attack, but he backed out at the last minute, citing his poor economic condition and the belief that suicide was forbidden in Islam.

Umer, a 28-year-old doctor from Pulwama, is believed to have been the most radicalised member and key operative in a network spanning Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Officials suspect he was planning a powerful Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) blast.

Evidence suggests his original plan was to place a VBIED in a crowded place, either in the national capital or at a site of religious importance, and then flee.

However, the plot fell apart when Srinagar police's meticulous investigation led to Gannie's arrest and the seizure of explosives. This likely caused Umer to panic, finally ending in the premature blast outside the Red Fort.

The inter-state network was exposed after the appearance of JeM posters on walls in Bunpora, Nowgam, on the outskirts of Srinagar, on October 19.

Srinagar police registered a case and reviewed CCTV footage, leading to the arrest of three locals — Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar alias Shahid all of whom had prior stone-pelting cases.

Their interrogation led to the arrest of Maulvi Irfan Ahmad, a former paramedic-turned Imam from Shopian, who allegedly supplied the posters and used his access to radicalise the doctors.

Telangana YouTubers harass Muslim vendor, force him to eat sweet snack on camera

Feb 16, 2026

A Muslim street vendor was allegedly harassed by a group of YouTubers during the ongoing tribal festival 'Medaram Jatara' in Telangana’s Mulugu district, after being accused on camera of engaging in “food jihad”.

The vendor, identified as Shaik Shaiksha Vali from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh, had set up a stall selling khova buns — a popular sweet snack — at the tribal festival. A group claiming to be associated with a Telugu YouTube channel approached his stall and began questioning him while recording the interaction.

In a video that later surfaced on social media, a man is heard asking the vendor his name and place of origin. “Vali, sir,” the vendor responds when asked his name. He says he is from Kurnool and that two people had come to run the stall.

The group then questions the quality of the buns, asking him to show the expiry date. When the vendor replies that he sources the product and sells it, one of the men is heard saying, “Dial 100 and hand him over to the police. You bring it and whom do you want to kill?” A woman in the group adds, “There has to be something wrong here if he can sell it for Rs 10.”

The group allegedly demanded that Vali show his Aadhaar card to prove his identity and asked him to eat the bun on camera to demonstrate that it was not harmful. Under apparent pressure, the vendor complied with the questioning. When asked about the ingredients, he said the buns were made of “milk, sugar and Bombay rava.”

The incident has sparked concern on social media over alleged communal profiling and vigilantism at large public gatherings. There was no immediate official statement from authorities on whether a complaint had been filed.

Efforts being made to impose one ideology on the country: Asad

Feb 16, 2026

Cleared: dk

Hyderabad: AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said the Congress govt and police should take action against Youtubers who allegedly targeted a kova bun Muslim vendor at Medaram Jatara, terming their actions an attempt to create trouble on the pretext of "food jihad".

Speaking at the 68th revival day of AIMIM at Dar Us Salam on Saturday night, Owaisi said such incidents would increase in the state if not nipped in the bud. The revival anniversary was attended by the party's five MLAs from Bihar, 125 corporators and 83 councillors from Maharashtra civic bodies, and AIMIM state presidents of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Delhi. The corporators and councillors from Maharashtra came in a rally (convoy) of four-wheelers from Maharashtra to Dar Us Salam.

Referring to the Muslim vendor's issue at Medaram Jatara, Owaisi demanded that the Telangana police book cases against those who harassed the vendor. "Maintaining law and order is the duty of police and the state govt. What tamasha was that? Such YouTubers are enemies of the country, I strongly condemn the incident," he added.

Owaisi said the vendor was selling kova buns, but the YouTubers saw "food jihad" in it, and added that if they did not like the food, they should have informed police. He said those who stand up for their constitutional rights are branded enemies by communal forces. "Those who hold BR Ambedkar's Constitution close to their heart are seen as enemies by communal forces. Adivasis, who say they are attached to their land, unemployed youth seeking jobs, farmers seeking income for their agricultural produce, bearded men, skull-cap-wearing men and hijab wearing women and those who stand up to seek the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, are all portrayed as enemies. But this perceived enemy is the true patriot," he added.

Stating that the country's founding leaders had envisioned an inclusive India, Owaisi said all out efforts were being made to impose one ideology on the country. He alleged that they were against Bharat's inclusivity, pluralism and diversity, and said RSS and BJP want to impose a singular ideology and reject constitutional values in favour of the Manusmriti. "These efforts run contrary to the preamble of the Constitution," he stated.

Owaisi referred to Maulvi Allauddin of Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad leading a protest to the British Residency, and said Turrabaz Khan launched an attack on the British Residency. "Can RSS and BJP name a single member who was martyred in the freedom struggle against the British. We don't need them to teach us patriotism," he said.

Referring to the recent controversy on Tipu Sultan in Malegaon municipal corporation and alleged remarks made by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Owaisi said a photo of Tipu was there in the copy of the Constitution, and that Nehru, Sardar Patel among others signed the first copy. He said Gandhi had termed Tipu as the embodiment of Hindu-Muslim unity. "Is BJP and Fadnavis bigger than Gandhi and Sardar Patel," he asked, accusing the saffron party and RSS of distorting history.

Owaisi, along with those seated on the dais and the crowd at the public meeting, paid tributes to 40 CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the Pulwama terror attack by switching on the flashlights of their mobile phones. He demanded that PM Narendra Modi should completely put an end to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

Box:

MIM floor leader in the assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi said the Constitution provides them the right and freedom to contest elections in any state. "Who are you to stop us? The Constitution gives me right to go anywhere, wear and eat anything, and can talk anything within the purview of the Constitution," he said in an indirect reference to AICC chief Mallikarjun's comment not to allow AIMIM to contest UP assembly elections, and also BJP and RSS carrying out campaign against hijab and other issues.

On his part, Asaduddin Owaisi said Kharge knows only three things of Hyderabad, but there were many famous things of this historic city. Kharge had said Biryani, Sherwani and Pareshani (pareshani at an obvious reference to AIMIM).

Former BSP and Congress Muslim leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui joins SP

February 15, 2026

Prominent Muslim leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the presence of party president Akhilesh Yadav here on Sunday.

Akhilesh Yadav accompanied Siddiqui to the SP office here and inducted him into the party. Naseemuddin, a four-time state minister in the Mayawati cabinet and a founding member of the BSP, had resigned from the Congress on January 24 last.

The SP president gave party membership to Siddiqui and other leaders who joined the party.

Yadav welcomed Siddiqui by garlanding him and presented him with a portrait of Ahilyabai along with a memento. Siddiqui’s wife also joined the party on the occasion.

Upon joining the Samajwadi Party, Siddiqui told reporters, “I have a long-standing relationship with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and hold him in great respect. We will follow the path he shows us. There are many senior leaders in the party, and we must work shoulder to shoulder with them to strengthen it. If the party is strong, we will be strong; if we are strong, the state will be strong; and if the state is strong, society will be strong.”

Following Azam Khan’s continued imprisonment, the party lacked a grassroots Muslim leader. According to political analysts, this could benefit the SP.

Others who joined the party included former Pratapgar MLA Rajkumar, former Deoria MLA Dinanath Kushwaha, former UP minister Anees Ahmed alias Phool Babu, and Danish Khan, who was associated with the AIMIM. Among the women leaders were Rachna Pal, Husna Siddiqui, Poonam Pal, and Alka, who took party membership along with several other workers.

Siddiqui, who began his political career with the BSP, served as a cabinet minister in the Mayawati government. He is considered a prominent Muslim political figure in Uttar Pradesh. After Azam Khan’s imprisonment, the Samajwadi Party lacked a Muslim leader of comparable stature, a gap the party hopes to fill with Siddiqui’s induction.

While resigning from the Congress, Naseemuddin Siddiqui said, “I had joined the Congress to fight communalism, but I have not been able to work on the ground for the past eight years and was beginning to feel restive. I hold Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sonia Gandhi in high regard and will continue to respect them, but there was no meaningful work for me in the party. I had joined the Congress party to fight communalism, but that was no longer happening.”

UP Congress president Ajay Rai tried to persuade him to stay, but he refused. Speculation was rife whether he would join another party or pursue independent politics. There was also talk of him joining Chandrashekhar’s Azad Samaj Party, but he put an end to speculation by deciding to join the Samajwadi Party.

Security agencies bust ‘mule account’ network in J&K; freeze over 8K accounts amid terror funding concerns

Fayaz Wani

16 Feb 2026

SRINAGAR: Security agencies have busted a vast network of “mule accounts” operating in Jammu and Kashmir amid concerns that funds funnelled through these may have been diverted to fuel separatist and anti-national activities in the Union Territory.

Sources said over 8,000 mule accounts have been identified and frozen across Jammu and the UT in the past three years.

They said the security agencies believe that the NIA cracked down on illegal money flows in 2017, and anti-national groups shifted to a new form of “digital hawala”.

According to sources, the investigators believe the network functioned as the financial backbone of international scam operations, enabling stolen funds to be layered, transferred and ultimately converted into untraceable crypto-currency.

The central agencies have directed J&K Police and other agencies probing the issue to coordinate closely with banks and financial institutions to curb the mushrooming of such accounts and identify the middlemen known as “mulers”, who facilitate the fraud.

Sources said detecting a money trail through the mule accounts is deliberately complex. “The funds are rapidly shifted across multiple accounts and broken into smaller amounts to evade detection before being converted into cryptocurrency through private digital wallets,” they said.

They cited a recent case in J&K, where police successfully traced and recovered nearly Rs 40 lakhs out of Rs 52 lakhs in a major cyber arrest fraud case involving a retired Air Force officer, who was subjected to “digital arrest fraud” for nine days.

“The police sleuths investigating the case traced beneficiary bank accounts and followed the money trail across multiple financial layers. Within three hours of receiving the complaint, police investigators traced `11.90 lakh to a suspected Yes Bank account in Jodhpur,” a police official said.

The efforts led to an additional `28 lakhs in a second layer of suspected accounts. The amount was instantly placed on hold by invoking the newly issued SOP.

Army seeks 'drone catchers' to combat rising air threats

15 Feb 2026

Harpreet Bajwa

CHANDIGARH: The Army has sought ‘drone catchers’, which are automated drones equipped with nets to ensnare or destroy hostile machines, in order to counter the increasing threats from small drones and unmanned aerial systems (UAS), which are hard to detect by conventional radars as a request for information issued by the Ministry of Defence.

The request for information for procurement of drone catcher system issued to the vendors reads, "The air threat from low radar cross section drones (RCS) and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) employed individually or as a SWARM has grown exponentially. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to develop and procure suitable weapon systems for countering and neutralizing this emerging threat. A drone catcher system is required to detect and counter the low RCS drone or UAS by utilizing the net catcher.’’

The request further noted that the proposed system should be able to deploy independently or in conjunction with in-service air defence weapon systems and other C-UAS weapon systems in all types of terrain conditions as obtainable in India.

The proposed system should have a surveillance, detection, and tracking capability, a microprocessor for computing a targeting solution, and a drone with a net catcher facility as per the system, along with a ground control station (GCS).

The RFI document further states that the drone sensor will be based on electronically scanned array technology or better, and it should be able to scan large volumes of airspace for drone intrusions.

"It should be able to detect the target drones all around (3600 ) with a minimum detection, tracking capability of 20 drones/ and UAS simultaneously. The drone sensor should be able to detect, track and prioritize and thereafter designate the hostile targets to the drone catcher through the GCS. The slant range of the drone sensor should be 4 kilometers or more (for 0.01 Sqm RCS),’’ it read.

The documents states that the drone catcher system will have a ground control station (GCS) which will feed information, data received from the drone sensor to the drone catcher remotely via a data link so that the drone catcher initiates effective measures to effect capture or destruction of the hostile drone by utilizing net catcher.

"The sensor should be compatible for integration with the Akashteer control and reporting air defence module through hardware interfaces with inbuilt software. It should also meet the Army Cyber Group evaluation criteria for being on-boarded on to the Army Data Network,’’ it added.

The ground control station will include a laptop or tablet computer that will be used to display telemetry information of hostile drones or UAS of small RCS received from the Drone Sensor and this information will be passed on to the Drone Catchers to undertake effective measures to destroy the aerial threat.

"The jammer subsystem shall provide electronic attack capabilities against hostile UAS, including RF denial, selective GNSS denial, and GNSS deception, across standard and non-standard frequency bands. The system shall support controlled and selective application of soft-kill measures and be capable of operating concurrently with hard-kill effectors without mutual interference,’’ adds the request for information.

The system would be employed across all types of terrain and climatic conditions in India from plains, deserts, and coastal areas to high altitude and mountainous area, up to 4500 meters and in temperatures ranging from minus 15 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius.

Why Calcutta High Court imposed Rs 10k costs on man over his plea for appointment as Muslim marriage registrar

Ashish Shaji

Feb 16, 2026

Calcutta High Court news: The Calcutta High Court recently dismissed a man’s plea for compassionate appointment as a Muslim marriage registrar (MMR) while claiming that his father, a certified MMR, is incapacitated due to hearing disability.

A bench comprising Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Ajay Kumar Gupta also imposed Rs 10,000 costs on the man after noting that his father’s certification as MMR has not yet been revoked by the state.

Calcutta high court Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Ajay Kumar Gupta heard the plea on February 9.

“This Court is of the clear and unequivocal view that the writ petition was filed in gross abuse of process of law,” the court held on February 9, while dismissing the plea.

Background

The petitioner had filed a writ petition before the single bench of the Calcutta High Court submitting that his father is incapacitated by reason of a hearing disability.

He, therefore, prayed that the said post be given to him on compassionate grounds.

His plea was dismissed by the single judge on the ground that he did not possess the qualifications required for appointment as MMR under the government notification dated June 28, 2000.

Feeling aggrieved by the order passed by the single judge, he filed an appeal before a division bench of the court.

Explained | Do marriages need to be registered? What happens if they are not?

Findings

Admittedly, the petitioner is neither a Fazil nor Alim (scholar) in terms of Rule 4 of the government notification dated June 28, 2000.

Rule 5 prescribes that the persons without the aforesaid qualification of Fazil and Alim must have sufficient knowledge of Arabic and the Mohammedan Law of marriage and divorce.

The single judge found that the certificate produced by the appellant did not indicate that he had sufficient knowledge of Arabic or Mohammedan Law of marriage and divorce.

The single judge, therefore, refused to exercise discretionary relief under Article 226 (power of high courts to issue certain writs) of the Constitution of India to interfere with the order rejecting the prayer of the appellant for appointment of MMR on compassionate appointment.

What is more baffling is that the medical certificate of his father indicates 45 per cent of hearing disability.

It was further indicated that the hearing may improve with the passage of time.

Admittedly, the father’s certification as MMR by the state has not yet been revoked. It is not understood under what authority or entitlement in law the petitioner could claim that his father’s MMR registration certificate has been revoked by the state.

The order passed by the single judge of this court calls for no interference.

Why Tipu Sultan keeps triggering political flashpoints in Maharashtra

Zeeshan Shaikh

Feb 15, 2026

Nearly 1,000 kilometres away from the kingdom he once ruled, Tipu Sultan has once again become the focal point of a high voltage political battle in Maharashtra. What began as the display of his portrait in the office of Malegaon’s deputy mayor has snowballed into a statewide confrontation, drawing in Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and a police case against Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal.

At the heart of the controversy is Sapkal’s comparison of Tipu Sultan with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. But this is not an isolated episode. Over the past several years, Tipu Sultan has repeatedly surfaced in political disputes in Mumbai, Malegaon and parts of north Maharashtra, particularly in communally sensitive urban pockets.

What has happened now?

The immediate trigger was the display of Tipu Sultan’s portrait in the office of the newly elected deputy mayor in Malegaon. After protests by Shiv Sena leaders, the civic administration removed the portrait, citing that Tipu Sultan is not on the state government’s official protocol list of leaders whose portraits may be displayed in government offices.

The controversy escalated when Sapkal described Tipu Sultan as a brave warrior who fought the British and said he should be viewed on par with Shivaji Maharaj as a symbol of valour. Fadnavis termed the comparison unacceptable and accused the Congress of distorting history.

Fadnavis called the comparison unacceptable. Congress “should be ashamed of equating the founder of Hindavi Swarajya with Tipu Sultan, who butchered 1,000s of Hindus,” he said. “Maharashtra will not tolerate this. If there is even a little integrity left in Congress politicians, they must clarify their stand. Their allies should also make their position clear,” he said, referring to Shiv Sena UBT and NCP SP in the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance.

Why does Tipu Sultan evoke such strong reactions in Maharashtra?

Although Tipu Sultan ruled the Kingdom of Mysore, nearly 1,000 km away, he has become a symbolic figure in Maharashtra’s political discourse for several reasons. Supporters project Tipu Sultan as an anti colonial ruler who resisted the British East India Company and died in battle in 1799. Critics, especially from Hindutva groups, portray him as a religious persecutor and argue that equating him with Shivaji Maharaj is an affront to Maharashtra’s legacy. In Maharashtra, Shivaji Maharaj occupies a central and near sacred place in public memory. Any perceived comparison between Shivaji and other rulers often triggers sharp political responses.

Tipu as a symbol of Muslim political assertion

In large parts of Mumbai’s suburbs such as Malwani and Govandi, and in parts of Marathwada and other areas with a high Muslim population, Tipu Sultan has in recent years become a symbol used by sections of Muslim youth to assert historical identity and political presence.

Since the rise of parties such as All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen in Maharashtra after 2014, posters and public references to Tipu Sultan have increased in some areas. Local leaders say these are meant to highlight Muslim contributions to Indian history.

“For many young Muslims who feel politically marginalised today, invoking a strong historical ruler such as Tipu Sultan serves as a counter narrative to stereotypes of victimhood. Many historians describe him as a ruler who resisted the British, and that image carries symbolic weight. Highlighting a figure like Tipu is also a way of asserting that Muslims have played a significant role in India’s history. It becomes a means of claiming visibility and space within the larger national story when Muslims feel that they are increasingly being pushed to the margins of its polity,” said Irfan Shaikh, a social activist and community worker from Nashik.

Is this the first such controversy in Maharashtra?

No. Tipu Sultan has been at the centre of multiple political flashpoints in the state.

In 2022, a controversy erupted in Malwani in Mumbai’s Malad area over a playground locally referred to as Tipu Sultan Ground. Then cabinet minister Aslam Shaikh inaugurated renovation work at the ground. The BJP alleged it was an attempt to officially rename the facility after Tipu Sultan. Shaikh denied any formal renaming and said the ground had long been known by that name locally.

The protest saw BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal workers gathering in large numbers, and police detained several protesters.

In 2021, a Samajwadi Party corporator proposed naming a garden after Tipu Sultan in Govandi, triggering objections from right wing groups.

There are also roads in Mumbai named after Tipu Sultan, including in Andheri and Govandi, some dating back to periods when the Shiv Sena BJP coalition controlled the civic body. This has been cited by Congress leaders to argue that the opposition’s stance has shifted over time.

Syrian foreign minister: National interest and the welfare of the people top priority

February 15, 2026

MUNICH: The Syrian Arab Republic Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani spoke on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference about the country’s ongoing recovery, internal reforms, and the impact of Israeli military actions.

“We are satisfied with the achievements we have made, but we continue striving to deliver the best for our people,” Al-Shaibani said.

“We will not tire or give up and will work day and night to build the Syria we aspire to, together with our citizens.”

In the Syrian Arab News Agency report the minister stressed that the Syrian state had not shirked its responsibility for what happened in Sweida and other areas, noting that “the national interest and the welfare of the people have always been our top priority.”

He emphasized that the diversity in Syria is a source of strength.

“We share national interests, including the unity and territorial integrity of the country, and we operate within the framework of the law,” he added.

Al-Shaibani highlighted progress in rebuilding state institutions and restoring trust between the government and the public.

“We live in a country exhausted by war and by the mismanagement inherited from the deposed regime,” he said. “Syrian society remains fragmented, both inside the country and abroad, and continues to face humanitarian and infrastructure challenges.”

He emphasized that efforts to unify the country include consolidating state control over weapons, a principle established after the revolution’s victory.

The minister also highlighted the role of Syrian citizens in the recovery process.

“What we rely on is our people, who possess determination and ambition,” he said, adding that “lifting sanctions is the key to reconstruction.”

He noted that there are still displacement camps in the country and that many refugees continue to live abroad.

Turning to external issues, he expressed concern over Israeli military activity.

“Since Dec. 8, 2024, Syria has faced more than 1,000 airstrikes, the occupation of new areas in southern Syria, and over 500 ground incursions,” he said, adding that the Syrian state has pursued a realistic approach toward Israel, prioritizing reconstruction and national recovery.

He noted, however, that the policy might not have been acceptable to Israel, which “continues to seek regional conflicts.”

Al-Shaibani emphasized that negotiations should result in Israel withdrawing from the areas it occupied after Dec. 8, respecting Syrian sovereignty and airspace.

Syria’s deputy interior minister met with Germany’s interior minister on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

They discussed security developments and prospects for cooperation, according to a statement from the interior ministry.

Maj. Gen. Abdulkader Al-Tahhan held talks with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt during the annual conference.

The Syrian Interior Ministry said the meeting included a review of current developments in Syria and their impact on security and humanitarian issues.

It added that both sides stressed the importance of coordination and information-sharing in support of regional and international stability.

The statement said the officials also discussed possible cooperation between the two interior ministries, including training, capacity-building and the exchange of expertise.

Trump tells Hamas to proceed with ‘full and immediate’ disarmament

February 15, 2026

WEST PALM BEACH: US President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Hamas to move forward with disarmament under his plan for postwar Gaza, and said members of his so-called “Board of Peace” had pledged $5 billion to the Palestinian territory’s reconstruction.

“Very importantly, Hamas must uphold its commitment to Full and Immediate Demilitarization,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform, ahead of a February 19 meeting of the board in Washington.

Disarmament is a key part in the second phase of the US-brokered ceasefire plan sealed in October between Israel and the Palestinian militant group to end the war triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023.

The United Nations endorsed the plan in November.

The second phase stipulates that Israeli forces gradually withdraw from Gaza and Hamas should disarm, with an international stabilization force deployed to ensure security.

Hamas has repeatedly said that disarmament is a red line, although it has indicated it could consider handing over its weapons to a future Palestinian governing authority.

Both sides accuse each other daily of ceasefire violations.

Although originally intended to oversee Gaza’s rebuilding, the charter for the “Board of Peace” does not seem to limit its role to the Palestinian territory.

“The Board of Peace has unlimited potential,” Trump said Sunday in his post.

After an initial meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos last month, the board is due to meet Thursday in the US capital.

Countries have been asked to pay $1 billion for permanent membership of the board, and the invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country invaded Ukraine in 2022, has drawn criticism.

Key US allies including France and Britain have expressed doubts.

Trump said the $5 billion in pledges by member states would be formally announced then, and that members also “have committed thousands of personnel to the International Stabilization Force and Local Police to maintain Security and Peace for Gazans.”

Trump has said the organization will work “in conjunction” with the United Nations.

“The Board of Peace will prove to be the most consequential International Body in History,” he said.

Under the ceasefire plan, a Palestinian technocratic committee has also been set up with a goal of taking over governance in the battered Gaza Strip.

Erdogan postpones UAE visit, saying leader has ‘health problem’

February 16, 2026

ISTANBUL: Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday announced he was postponing a visit to Abu Dhabi because Emirati leader Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had a “health problem” — then deleted the message.

The message, posted by Erdogan’s team on X, said he had talked with Al Nahyan by phone.

“During the course of the call, President Erdogan expressed his sadness over the health problem experienced by (President) Al Nahyan and wished him a prompt recovery,” said the three-paragraph message.

Erdogan would travel to the United Arab Emirates at a later date, still to be determined, the message added.

Although the message — of which AFP has a screen grab — was quickly deleted from the account, it had already been picked up by official Turkish media.

Turkiye’s state broadcaster likewise took down its article on Erdogan that mentioned the Emirati leader’s health problem.

The official Emirati news agency, WAM, reported on the telephone conversation between the two leaders, but did not mention that Erdogan’s visit had been postponed.

Contacted by AFP, neither the Turkish presidency nor the Emirati authorities — who have themselves made no statement on their president’s health — have yet answered.

The Emirati leader’s team on Saturday evening released photos taken the same day showing Al Nahyan, known as MBZ, smiling and apparently in good health, with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar.

The UN says Al-Hol camp population has dropped sharply as Syria moves to relocate remaining families

February 15, 2026

DAMASCUS: The UN refugee agency said Sunday that a large number of residents of a camp housing family members of suspected Daesh group militants have left and the Syrian government plans to relocate those who remain.

Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, UNHCR’s representative in Syria, said in a statement that the agency “has observed a significant decrease in the number of residents in Al-Hol camp in recent weeks.”

“Syrian authorities have informed UNHCR of their plan to relocate the remaining families to Akhtarin camp in Aleppo Governorate (province) and have requested UNHCR’s support to assist the population in the new camp, which we stand ready to provide,” he said.

He added that UNHCR “will continue to support the return and reintegration of Syrians who have departed Al-Hol, as well as those who remain.”

The statement did not say how residents had left the camp or how many remain. Many families are believed to have escaped either during the chaos when government forces captured the camp from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces last month or afterward.

There was no immediate statement from the Syrian government and a government spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

At its peak after the defeat of IS in Syria in 2019, around 73,000 people were living at Al-Hol. Since then, the number has declined with some countries repatriating their citizens. The camp’s residents are mostly children and women, including many wives or widows of IS members.

The camp’s residents are not technically prisoners and most have not been accused of crimes, but they have been held in de facto detention at the heavily guarded facility.

Forces of Syria’s central government captured the Al-Hol camp on Jan. 21 during a weekslong offensive against the SDF, which had been running the camp near the border with Iraq for a decade. A ceasefire deal has since ended the fighting.

Separately, thousands of accused IS militants who were held in detention centers in northeastern Syria have been transferred to Iraq to stand trial under an agreement with the US

The US military said Friday that it had completed the transfer of more than 5,700 adult male IS suspects from detention facilities in Syria to Iraqi custody.

Iraq’s National Center for International Judicial Cooperation said a total of 5,704 suspects from 61 countries who were affiliated with IS — most of them Syrian and Iraqi — were transferred from prisons in Syria. They are now being interrogated in Iraq.

Lebanon says 4 dead in strike as Israel says targeted Palestinian group

February 15, 2026

BEIRUT, Lebanon: Lebanon said an Israeli strike on Sunday near the Syrian border in the country’s east killed four people, as Israel said it had targeted operatives from Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad.

Despite a November 2024 truce that sought to end more than a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon, usually saying it is targeting the Iran-backed group but occasionally also targeting its Palestinian ally Hamas.

It appeared to be the first strike Israel has claimed in Lebanon against Islamic Jihad, which is also allied with Hezbollah, since the truce.

An Israeli drone “targeted a car on the Lebanese-Syrian border,” the state-run National News Agency said, adding that “four bodies” were inside the vehicle.

Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed the toll in a statement.

The Israeli military in a statement said it “struck Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists in the Majdal Anjar area.”

Fighters from Islamic Jihad were among those killed in Lebanon during hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which erupted in October 2023 over the Gaza war.

The Palestinian group and Hamas both claimed some attacks and infiltration attempts from Lebanon during the hostilities.

More than 370 people have been killed by Israeli fire in Lebanon since the ceasefire, according to an AFP tally of health ministry reports.

In line with the 2024 truce, the Lebanese army announced in January that it had completed the first phase of a government plan to disarm Hezbollah, covering the area near the Israeli border.

As part of the Lebanese government’s push to disarm non-state groups, some Palestinian factions in Lebanon handed over weapons in several refugee camps last year to the Lebanese authorities.

Hamas and its Islamic Jihad ally have not announced plans to disarm in Lebanon.

Israeli cabinet approves West Bank land registration, Palestinians condemn ‘de-facto annexation’

February 15, 2026

JERUSALEM: Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved ?further measures to tighten Israel’s control over the occupied West Bank and make it easier for settlers to buy land, in a move Palestinians called “a ?de-facto annexation.”

The West Bank is among the territories that the Palestinians seek for a future independent state. Much of it is under Israeli military control, with limited Palestinian self-rule in some areas run by the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA).

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing an election later this year, deems the establishment of any Palestinian state a security threat.

His ruling coalition ?includes many ?pro-settler members who want Israel to annex ?the ?West ?Bank, ?land captured ?in the 1967 Middle East war to which Israel cites biblical and historical ties.

Ministers voted in favor of beginning a process of land registration for the first time since 1967.

“We are continuing the revolution of settlement and strengthening our hold across all parts of our land,” said Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a far-right member ?of Netanyahu’s government.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said land registration ?was a vital security measure designed ?to ensure control, enforcement, and full freedom ?of action for Israel in ?the area to protect its citizens and safeguard national interests.

The ?cabinet said in a statement registration was an “appropriate response to illegal land registration processes promoted by the Palestinian Authority,” and would end disputes.

The PA presidency rejected the cabinet’s decision, saying it constitutes “a de-facto annexation of ?occupied Palestinian territory and a declaration of the commencement of annexation plans aimed at entrenching the occupation ?through illegal settlement ?activity.”

US President Donald Trump has ruled out Israeli annexation of the West Bank but his administration has not sought to curb Israel’s accelerated settlement building, which the Palestinians say denies them a potential state by eating away at its territory.

The United Nations’ highest court said in a non-binding advisory opinion in 2024 that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements there are illegal and should be ended as soon as possible. Israel disputes this view, saying it has historical and biblical ties to the ?land.

The land registration adds ?to a series of measures taken earlier this month to expand control.

Gaza’s Nasser Hospital condemns move by MSF to suspend most services

February 15, 2026

CAIRO: One of Gaza’s last functioning large hospitals condemned the move by an international organization to pull out of operations over concerns about armed men, claiming on Sunday that the hospital had installed civil police for security. The move comes as at least 10 Palestinians were killed in clashes with the Israeli military in Gaza.

Doctors Without Borders, also known by its acronym MSF, said in a statement Saturday that all its noncritical medical operations at Nasser Hospital were suspended due to security breaches that posed “serious” threats to its teams and patients. MSF said there had been an increase in patients and staff seeing armed men in parts of the compound since the US-brokered October ceasefire was reached.

Nasser Hospital said Sunday that the increase in armed men was due to a civilian police presence aimed at protecting patients and staff and said MSF’s “allegations are factually incorrect, irresponsible, and pose a serious risk to a protected civilian medical facility.”

Nasser Hospital one of few functioning hospitals left in Gaza

Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis is one of the territory’s few functioning hospitals. Hundreds of patients and war-wounded have been treated there daily, and the facility was a hub for Palestinian prisoners released by Israel in exchange for Israeli hostages as part of the current ceasefire deal.

“MSF teams have reported a pattern of unacceptable acts including the presence of armed men, intimidation, arbitrary arrests of patients and a recent situation of suspicion of movement of weapons,” the organization said. The suspension occurred in January but was only recently announced.

Nasser Hospital staff say that in recent months it has been repeatedly attacked by masked, armed men and militias, which is why the presence of an armed civilian police force is crucial. Hamas remains the dominant force in areas not under Israeli control, including in the area where Nasser Hospital is located. But other armed groups have mushroomed across Gaza as a result of the war, including groups backed by Israel’s army in the Israeli-controlled part of the strip.

Throughout the war, which began with the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has repeatedly struck hospitals, including Nasser, accusing the militant group of operating in or around them. Hamas security men often have been seen inside hospitals, blocking access to some areas.

Some hostages released from Gaza have said they spent time during captivity in a hospital, including Nasser Hospital.

Ten Palestinians killed in strikes across Gaza

At least 10 Palestinians were killed Sunday by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip, hospital authorities said.

The dead include five men, all in their 20s, who were killed in an Israeli strike in the eastern part of Khan Younis city, according to the Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies. The strike hit a group of people in an area close to the Yellow Line which separates Israeli-controlled areas from the rest of Gaza, it said.

The Israeli military did not comment on the strike but has said in the past it will attack militants if its troops are threatened, especially near the Yellow Line.

Rami Shaqra said his son, Al-Baraa, was among the militants who were securing the area from potential attacks by the Israeli forces or Israeli-backed armed groups, when they were hit by the Israeli military. He said that they were killed by an airstrike.

Associated Press footage from the morgue showed at least two of the men had headbands denoting membership in the Qassam Brigades, the militant arm of Hamas. In northern Gaza, a drone strike hit a group of people in the Falluja area of Jabaliya refugee camp, killing five people, according to the Shifa Hospital.

The Israeli military said it was striking northern Gaza in response to several ceasefire violations near the Yellow Line, including militants attempting to hide in debris and others who attempted to cross the line while armed.

The Oct. 10 US-brokered ceasefire deal attempted to halt a more than two-year war between Israel and Hamas. While the heaviest fighting has subsided, the ceasefire has seen almost daily Israeli fire.

Israeli forces have carried out repeated airstrikes and frequently fire on Palestinians near military-held zones, killing 601 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. The ministry, which is part of the Hamas-led government, maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts. But it does not give a breakdown of civilians and militants.

Militants have carried out shooting attacks on troops, and Israel says its strikes are in response to that and other violations. Four Israeli soldiers have been killed.

Saudi Film Festival to return in April with focus on Korean cinema

February 15, 2026

DHAHRAN: The Saudi Film Festival, organized by the Cinema Association in partnership with the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture and supported by the Saudi Film Commission, has announced that it will launch at Ithra in Dhahran between April 23-29.

This year’s festival explores the theme of “Cinema of the Journey,” presenting a selection of Arab and international films, both short and feature-length, that center on journeys and movement as essential storytelling elements.

The program includes road movies, travel narratives and films where physical or emotional journeys drive the narrative.

The theme encourages Saudi filmmakers to explore this subject through their own perspectives. It positions cinema itself as an act of continuous transition, where identity, place, and time converge to shape the human experience.

Following last year’s focus on Japanese cinema, the festival will present a special “Spotlight on Korean Cinema” this year.

Ahmed Al-Mulla, founder and director of the Saudi Film Festival, said in a statement: “We’re excited to welcome filmmakers to our annual gathering. Our doors are open to all creators, and filmmakers remain at the heart of everything we do. This year’s festival creates an atmosphere filled with inspiration, idea exchange, and shared learning. It’s a celebration of cinematic creativity for everyone.”

Tariq Al-Khawaji, deputy director of the festival, added: “At Ithra, we’re proud of our longstanding partnership with the Cinema Association. It has enabled the festival’s growth and thematic diversity year after year, which we see clearly in how we empower filmmakers and create opportunities to engage with global cinema.

“The festival continues to grow across all areas, from preparations and participation to industry expectations locally and regionally. That makes attention to every detail essential.”

Since its launch in 2008, the Saudi Film Festival has played a central role in nurturing local and Gulf cinema. After intermittent early editions, it has now established itself as an annual platform for narrative and documentary competitions, industry programs and project markets.

By bringing together emerging and established filmmakers in Dhahran each year, the festival strengthens Saudi Arabia’s growing presence on the global film stage.

Saudi innovation challenge launched to tackle dam sediment buildup

February 15, 2026

JEDDAH: The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture announced on Saturday the launch of the “Innovation Challenge in Dam Sediment Management,” a strategic initiative aimed at addressing environmental issues caused by sediment buildup in dams.

The challenge falls under the Saudi Innovation Grants Program for Private Sector Challenges and seeks to encourage innovators and technology firms to develop sustainable, long-term solutions to sediment accumulation.

In a statement posted on its official X account, the ministry said the initiative is designed to transform environmental challenges into development opportunities by leveraging advanced technologies to enhance water resource sustainability across the Kingdom. The move aligns with national water security objectives.

The ministry outlined several key goals for the challenge, including improving dam storage efficiency by tackling soil and material buildup that reduces water capacity, extending the operational lifespan of dams through innovative maintenance techniques, and cutting costs associated with traditional dredging and maintenance.

It also aims to promote environmental sustainability by encouraging the safe and beneficial reuse of extracted sediments, such as in construction materials, and to minimize system disruptions caused by heavy sedimentation to ensure uninterrupted water flow.

Participation has been opened to a broad range of local and international stakeholders, including startups and small and medium-sized enterprises specializing in environmental technologies, advanced engineering solution providers, as well as research centers and universities.

Saudia Group graduates 1,200 aviation trainees at landmark ceremony

NADA HAMEED

February 15, 2026

JEDDAH: Saudia Group held its first unified graduation ceremony for trainees of its aviation programs on Saturday, marking one of the largest such events ever held in the Kingdom’s aviation sector.

The ceremony, in Jeddah, brought together more than 1,200 students who had completed specialized training programs and will now join the company’s workforce.

Mohammed Midher, a 32-year-old captain and graduate of the six-month aerospace engineering program, told Arab News: “Every difficulty becomes easy with hard work and dedication.

“I am very happy to graduate and grateful for this valuable opportunity provided by the Saudia Group.

“It was a chance to prove our skills and capabilities and we will be starting our jobs soon. I am very excited to lead the aircraft to destinations around the world.”

Nesreen Jomaa, a graduate of the Culinary Arts Academy’s one-year ZDAK program, said the training enhanced her professional growth.

“I already had experience in culinary arts and had worked in several hotels in Jeddah, so I came in with strong knowledge.

“This opportunity felt like a dream because it guarantees employment upon completion. It added so much to my professional growth and I also gained many wonderful friends within this field.”

Ashwaq Khaja, who completed the same program, said: “I am proud to be Saudi and proud of everything the group has provided for us.

“I have a bachelor’s degree in science management and I am a visual artist. Today, I aspire to combine visual art with culinary art. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”

All of the training programs were delivered by Saudia Group and its subsidiaries, Saudia, Saudia Academy, Saudia Technic, Saudi Ground Services, SAL Saudi Logistics Services, flyadeal and Catrion.

The graduates will now take up operational roles in flight operations, ground services, engineering, logistics and customer-facing functions.

The students’ families were present at the graduation event and there was also a performance by a Saudi choral group.

The ceremony also celebrated the first Saudi female graduates in airport aircraft maintenance, with 25 women completing the training program.

Women were also represented in inflight services and onboard chef programs, reflecting their broader inclusion across all disciplines.

“The percentage of women in aviation is increasing year after year,” said Khaled Tash, chief marketing officer of Saudia Group.

“There is no program today from which women are excluded. Every program is open and women are fully enabled and encouraged to join.

“Over the years, we have celebrated ordering new aircraft, building new airports, expanding logistics and investing in infrastructure. But there is nothing we can be more proud of than ensuring we have the right people to lead these growth projects.”

The event was held under the patronage of Saleh Al-Jasser, minister of transport and logistics services, and attended by Ibrahim Al-Omar, director general of Saudia Group, alongside senior officials and aviation sector representatives.

“Developing national talent is fundamental to achieving the ambitions of the National Aviation Strategy,” Al-Jasser said.

“Graduating more than 1,000 aviation professionals in a single year reflects the scale and pace of transformation underway across the Kingdom’s transport and logistics sector.

“Human capital remains our most important investment as we build a globally competitive aviation ecosystem.”

Al-Omar highlighted the company’s progress in localizing roles.

“Saudia Group has made significant progress in localizing critical aviation roles, surpassing targeted performance indicators by margins ranging from 43 percent to 230 percent,” he said.

“We have also embedded knowledge transfer requirements into our agreements with global manufacturers to ensure the development of Saudi capabilities within the Kingdom.

“The next phase of our transformation, particularly as we elevate the guest experience and strengthen global competitiveness, depends on continued investment in specialized national talent.”

The event highlighted the diversity of career paths within the aviation sector, bringing together graduates from operations, maintenance, engineering, cabin services and ground services within an integrated training ecosystem addressing the sector’s full range of needs.

The group has also increased local content levels across its activities from 19 percent in 2019 to 29 percent in 2023, reinforcing its contribution to domestic economic development.

UK considering significant increase to defence spending

16 Feb 2026

James Landale

The prime minister is considering making a significant increase in defence spending, the BBC has learned.

Downing Street is mulling over the idea of meeting an existing spending target earlier than planned at a potential cost of billions of pounds.

Sir Keir Starmer signalled his attitude over the weekend at the Munich Security Conference, telling world leaders: "To meet the wider threat, it's clear that we are going to have to spend more, faster."

The prime minister promised last year to spend 2.5% of national wealth – measured as gross domestic product (GDP) - on core defence by April 2027.

But he also set out an "ambition" to increase that spending to 3% of GDP in the next parliament.

The BBC has been told the prime minister's aides are now looking at proposals to meet that 3% ambition by the end of the current parliament, which could last until 2029.

No decision has been taken and the Treasury is said to be cautious.

The idea was discussed at a key meeting of the prime minister and his advisers earlier this month where they examined how best to meet existing defence commitments as part of the long delayed "defence investment plan".

Reports last month suggested the Ministry of Defence (MOD) needed an extra £28bn to meet existing costs over the next four years.

Sir Richard Knighton, chief of the defence staff, told MPs in January: "We cannot do everything we would want to do, as quickly as we want to do it, within the context of the budget we have set".

Officials said this realisation - that previous commitments would not cover rising defence costs and existing bills – was driving the idea of bringing forward the spending plans.

Downing Street sources said the defence investment plan was still being finalised and decisions had not been made. "There is a lot of speculation about," one said.

Reaching the 3% of GDP target five years earlier than planned would be hugely expensive.

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the independent body that gives ministers economic forecasts, calculated in March last year that increasing defence spending to 3% of GDP would cost by 2029-30 an additional £17.3bn per year.

Bee Boileau, research economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, estimated the extra needed would be less, about £13-14bn, once existing spending increases were taken into account.

Last year the UK spent about 2.3% of GDP on defence, around £66bn. The UK – along with all other Nato allies – is also committed to spending 3.5% of GDP on core defence by 2035.

In Munich on Saturday, Sir Keir made a sustained argument for greater defence spending to meet the threat from Russia.

"We must build our hard power because that is the currency of our age," he said. "We must spend more, deliver more, and coordinate more."

Greater defence spending, the prime minister argued, would mean less reliance on the United States: "We should deliver generational investments that move us from over-dependence to interdependence."

It would also, he said, allow the UK to cooperate more with European allies to defend Ukraine.

"To meet the wider threat, it's clear that we are going to have to spend more, faster," Sir Keir said. "We've shown our collective intent in this regard as well, with the historic agreement to increase spending to 5% on security and defence. And we're prepared to explore innovative solutions."

One defence source said the prime minister's speech read like an argument for increased defence spending with the announcement left out.

Whitehall sources said Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir's former chief of staff, was one adviser who had been pushing hard for extra defence spending. But since his resignation last weekend, Treasury concerns were said to have hardened. "The loss of McSweeney has changed the dynamic," one official said.

Treasury sources said they did not recognise this account, saying there was no specific 3% plan that they were resisting. They said joint conversations taking place about future defence spending which, they insisted, were for the whole of government, led by the prime minister.

But other sources in Whitehall said the Treasury could still be tasked to come up with ways of finding the money.

They said budgets that potentially could be raided included Overseas Development Assistance, action to achieve a net-zero economy by 2050; or the high speed rail line between London and Birmingham.

An alternative would be to borrow the money but the Treasury would be reluctant to breach its borrowing targets for fear of spooking the financial markets. One source said a special group had been set up at the MOD to examine ways of getting round the government's fiscal rules.

Meeting the 3% spending target in this parliament would be hugely welcomed by the United States, which has privately been pushing for the UK to move faster.

One defence source said: "Shifting the 3% target left would come as no surprise. The government's already made this massive commitment along with other Nato allies to get to 3.5% by 2035. The UK has to demonstrate how it is going to get there. That's what the PM signed up to."

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg the government had promised the biggest increase in defence investment since the Cold War.

But she accepted the need for more to be done: "We are going to need to go further, of course we will need to go further, because we are going to need to strengthen our defence and our partnerships in order to be able to do so."

A spokesperson for the MOD said: "We do not comment on speculation. The government is focused on delivering for defence. We are delivering the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War, with an extra £5bn for defence this financial year alone."

Zelensky takes another jab at Hungarian PM

16 Feb, 2026

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has launched another public attack against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, just hours after disparaging him during an address at the Munich Security Conference.

The Munich gathering honored Zelensky with its annual award for ‘outstanding’ contributions to peace on Saturday. Accepting the Ewald von Kleist Prize, the Ukrainian leader thanked his European sponsors for bankrolling Kiev’s war effort, especially the “biggest donators,” Germany and the UK.

“We are very thankful that we have such partners and friends,” he said, before going after the Hungarian prime minister.

“And I even want to thank Viktor – you all know who I mean – because in his own way, he pushes all of us to be better,” Zelensky said. “Better, so that we are never like him, someone who seems to have forgotten the word ‘shame.’”

EU member states have collectively provided €134 billion ($159 billion) in aid to Kiev since the conflict escalated in February 2022, according to the EU institutions. While giving the award to Zelensky, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Ukraine “deserves something more,” and that even the Nobel Peace Prize would not be “valuable enough.”

The remarks came shortly after Zelensky said that thanks to Ukraine, Orban can focus on “how to grow his belly, not how to grow his army” to counter the perceived ‘Russian threat’.

Orban, a vocal critic of EU support for Kiev, responded on X, saying Zelensky’s comments demonstrate why Ukraine “cannot become a member of the European Union.” He added that the Ukrainian leader’s rhetoric will“greatly help Hungarians see the situation more clearly.”

The Hungarian prime minister has long opposed Ukraine’s push to join the bloc and has repeatedly refused to send weapons or approve EU military aid, calling for diplomacy instead.

In January, Orban called Zelensky “a man in a desperate position,” while stressing that Hungary will continue to supply electricity and fuel and assist Ukrainian refugees despite the dispute.

Two mosques will host Ramadan community meals

February 16, 2026

Jon Wright

Two mosques will host community meals open to people of all faiths and none as part of their Ramadan celebrations.

Ipswich Mosque, on Bond Street, and the Shahjalal Islamic Centre and Masjid, on Argyle Street, Ipswich, will host free Iftar meals - when Muslims break their fast - on Sunday 1 March and Monday 2 March respectively.

The holy month of Ramadan is expected to start on the evening of either 17 or 18 February, depending on the sighting of a new crescent moon.

Tunu Miah, Ipswich Mosque's secretary, said: "The atmosphere is brilliant, we have people from all walks of life, other faiths, everyone is invited."

Ipswich Mosque, also known as the Suffolk Muslim Centre, said its meal was "a community engagement event aimed to increase understanding among the communities and bring positive change".

Although mosques are open to everyone all year round, Miah said it was important to give non-Muslims a reason to visit.

"Many people haven't been to the mosque before, so we can show them what part it plays, people just wonder sometimes," he said.

Miah said the event included a tour of the mosque, with an opportunity for guests to ask questions, observing prayers and then guests sharing a meal together.

Visitors were asked to dress modestly, he added.

Idris Ali, of the Shahjalal Islamic Centre, told the BBC: "Events like community iftars are important because they bring people together, encourage unity, and allow others to learn about and share in the values of Ramadan."

Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives.

The other pillars are declaration of faith, prayer, charity and pilgrimage.

Although the Quran requires Muslims to fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan, there are exceptions such as for people who have medical conditions.

Ramadan events across the North West

February 16, 2026

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan starts later this week with events happening across north-west England.

Here's a guide to the month when Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to sunset.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is considered sacred in Islamic belief as it commemorates the divine revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad in 7th Century Arabia.

During this period, many adult Muslims fast by abstaining from food, drink - including water - smoking and sexual relations between dawn and sunset.

Taking place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims hope the annual detox will strengthen their connection to God.

Ramadan also spurs extra charity and devotion, with mosques holding special prayers every night.

When does Ramadan start?

In 2026, Ramadan is expected to begin at sunset either on Tuesday 17 or Wednesday 18 February - depending on the sighting of the new moon.

As the Islamic calendar is lunar, the year is about 355 days. So the months shift back by about 10 days every year.

The end of Ramadan, which lasts for 29 and 30 days, is marked by the festival of Eid al-Fitr - the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast.

How many Muslims live in north-west England?

There are about 3.9m Muslims in England and Wales - 6.5% of the population - according to the 2021 census.

About 560,000 Muslims live across north-west England, where they make up about 12% of Greater Manchester's population and 8% in Lancashire.

They form 2% in Liverpool City Region, 1% in Cheshire and 0.4% in Cumbria.

How long are the fasts?

Fasts start at the beginning of dawn - about 05:00 GMT - and end at sunset, about 17:30.

Not everybody fasts during Ramadan - only those who are considered fit and healthy enough. There are exemptions for those who are sick or travelling, and for women who are menstruating, pregnant or breastfeeding. They can make up missed fasts at a later date if possible.

Children who have not reached puberty also don't have to fast.

What events will take place?

Muslims often gather to break the fast at sunset, with many mosques and organisations inviting those from other faiths or none to join in.

The Ramadan Tent Project, which has hosted open iftars including at Windsor Castle, will hold an event at The Glass Marquee by MyLahore in Blackburn on 21 February.

Muslim Arts and Culture Festival (Macfest) is also holding creative workshops across Greater Manchester throughout the month.

Many universities and colleges will have events, while various parks will host congregational Eid prayers and family-friendly festivals in mid-March.

Lutumailagi, Qoro ready to lead Nadi Muslim College

Waisea Nasokia

15 February 2026

For Ratu Mesulame Lutumailagi, the moment the badge was pinned to his uniform was not about status, it was about service.

Standing before teachers and fellow students at Nadi Muslim College’s 2026 student council investiture on Friday, the newly elected head boy reflected on what leadership truly means.

“I understand that this badge represents responsibility, not privilege,” he said.

Elected by ballot, Ratu Mesulame now carries the hopes of his peers for a stronger academic year ahead. He said he aims to inspire students to set higher standards for themselves academically, socially and morally.

“As head boy, I will work closely with the student council to ensure every student feels represented. I encourage my peers to take ownership of their learning, participate actively in school programmes, and always uphold the good name of Nadi Muslim College.”

He said punctuality, discipline and respect would be the foundation of his leadership.

He thanked Principal Mohammed Feroz, the teachers and Fiji Muslim League board members for the opportunity to serve.

Alongside him, Mary Qoro was badged head girl, describing her new role as both an honour and a responsibility.

“Together, we will work towards making our college proud,” she said.

“I thank all those who have built trust and confidence in me. Leading the students at Nadi Muslim College is a privilege and a responsibility I do not take lightly.”

Principal Mohammed Feroz confirmed the head boy and head girl were elected through a transparent ballot process.

“The elections were fair and square. We believe in transparency and accountability,” he said.

Poland needs nukes – president

15 Feb, 2026

Poland needs to develop its own nuclear weapons program, President Karol Nawrocki has suggested, citing a perceived ‘Russian threat’.

NATO’s European members have long cited what they claim to be the specter of Russian aggression to justify their massive military buildup. Moscow has dismissed such claims as “nonsense” and baseless fearmongering.

Speaking to Polsat News on Sunday, Nawrocki said he is a “strong supporter of Poland joining the nuclear project.”

“We need to act in this direction so that we can begin work,” the Polish president stated, adding that he does not know whether Warsaw would actually pursue this endeavor.

Poland is a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which recognizes only five nuclear-armed states: China, France, Russia, the US, and UK.

Meanwhile, talk of obtaining nuclear weapons is no longer taboo in Germany. The topic is increasingly discussed by the media and gaining “advocates among politicians, MPs, the military officials and experts,” Russian Ambassador to Berlin Sergey Nechaev told RIA Novosti on Friday, calling the trend highly concerning.

Kay Gottschalk, a lawmaker from the right-wing AfD party, said last month that Germany “needs nuclear weapons,” arguing that European nations could no longer rely on American protection. He stated that the recent tensions between the US and its European allies over Greenland proved that Washington’s interests are “fundamentally different from ours.”

Last July, International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said that Germany could build a nuclear bomb “in a matter of months,” but noted that the scenario was “purely hypothetical.”

In December, Japanese media quoted a senior adviser to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as suggesting that the country should consider developing its own nuclear deterrent. The remark drew a sharp rebuke from China.

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said last month that some countries may conclude that acquiring nuclear weapons is the only way to guarantee self-defense and sovereignty amid growing global instability.

“A range of nations have the technical capacity to run a military nuclear program, and some are pursuing research in this area,” he said.

Apart from the five permanent UN Security Council members, India, Pakistan and North Korea also possess nuclear arsenals, while Israel is widely believed to have undeclared capabilities.

EU needs to talk to Russia – Austrian chancellor

15 Feb, 2026

The EU has to engage in direct negotiations with Russia to resolve the Ukraine conflict, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has said.

The EU and UK cut diplomatic communication with Moscow following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. However, several EU leaders have recently called for renewed engagement with Moscow after this approach left the bloc effectively sidelined from peace efforts initiated by US President Donald Trump.

“I think that we need channels to Russia because without talks we will not find a solution,” Stocker said on the Table.Today Podcast on Sunday.

According to the chancellor, the EU needs to muster the “readiness to actually negotiate a viable peace solution” to the Ukraine conflict. Asked whether this means engaging with Russian President Vladimir Putin personally, Stocker replied in the affirmative, saying Putin is the one who “decides.”

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said Ukraine’s European backers were preparing for possible talks with Putin “at the technical level.” Macron first suggested re-engaging with Russia diplomatically late last year, arguing that “it will become useful again to speak with Vladimir Putin.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who previously expressed skepticism regarding talks with Russia, has recently acknowledged that the EU should “find a balance again with our largest European neighbor.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has insisted that instead of “haphazard” individual contact, the EU should appoint a special envoy to facilitate the process. Stocker similarly referred to his predecessor Karl Nehammer’s visit to Moscow in April 2022, saying the talks were “not a solo action, but rather part of a joint European strategy.”

Commenting on recent statements by EU leaders, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier this week that Moscow has never rejected direct contact and “they can just call President Putin.” However, the discussion must have a clear purpose and not devolve into a PR stunt with one side lecturing the other, he stated.

Trump removes ex-Miss California from religious panel after anti-Zionism remarks at antisemitism hearing

Feb 15, 2026

The Trump administration has removed former Miss California winner Carrie Prejean Boller from the White House Religious Liberty Commission following a contentious hearing on antisemitism, where she questioned whether opposition to Zionism should be equated with hatred of Jews.

The decision was announced by commission chair and Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who accused Prejean Boller of attempting to “hijack” the hearing to advance a personal and political agenda.

A former Trump White House official confirmed that the president backed the move. The ouster comes amid sharp debate within conservative circles over Israel, religious liberty and the boundaries between anti-Zionism and antisemitism.

Heated exchanges at antisemitism hearing

The controversy stems from a commission hearing held at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, focused on combating antisemitism in the United States.During the session, Prejean Boller pressed witnesses on whether criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza or rejection of Zionism should automatically be labelled antisemitic.

“If I don’t support the political state of Israel, am I an antisemite?” she asked during one exchange. She also questioned whether witnesses were willing to condemn Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Prejean Boller wore a Palestinian flag pin alongside an American flag pin at the hearing, a move that drew criticism from several conservative commentators.

Accusations of pursuing “personal agenda”

Dan Patrick said no commissioner had the right to “hijack a hearing for their own personal and political agenda on any issue,” adding that her actions were grounds for removal.

Prejean Boller rejected the claim, stating that she would not resign and arguing that forcing commissioners to affirm Zionism as a condition of participation violated religious freedom and conscience.

“As a Catholic, I have both a constitutional right and a God-given freedom of religion and conscience not to endorse a political ideology,” she said in a statement.

However, after being removed from the commission, she posted an Instagram story with the caption, “Imagine a country where pedophiles are protected but Catholics aren't.”

Conservative backlash

Several conservative figures criticised her remarks. Catholic League president Bill Donohue said she did not represent Catholic teaching, calling her assertion that “Catholics do not embrace Zionism” presumptuous.

Shawn Carney, president of pro-life group 40 Days for Life, described the suggestion that Catholics are against Jews as “absurd.”Republican Senator Ted Cruz said the episode was “sad,” while emphasising that antisemitism should be confronted firmly.

Trump’s record on Israel

Supporters of the move pointed to Trump’s long-standing pro-Israel stance. During his presidency, he recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moved the US embassy there, recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and brokered the Abraham Accords normalising relations between Israel and several Arab states.

Supporters say backing Israel remains central to Trump’s political platform.

Who is Carrie Prejean Boller?

Caroline Michelle Prejean Boller, born in 1987 in California, is a model and former beauty pageant titleholder.

She won the Miss California USA title in 2009 and later became first runner-up in the Miss USA competition. She drew national attention that year after expressing opposition to same-sex marriage during the pageant. She was subsequently stripped of her Miss California crown over alleged contractual breaches.

Prejean Boller was raised in an evangelical Christian household and converted to Catholicism in 2025. In May 2025, she was appointed to the Religious Liberty Commission established by Trump via executive order to advise on protecting religious freedom under federal law.

US must prove it’s ‘sincere’ about negotiations – Iranian deputy FM

15 Feb, 2026

The US must demonstrate its seriousness about reaching an agreement with Tehran, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi has said, warning that a war would be “bad for everybody.”

In an interview with the BBC published on Sunday, Takht-Ravanchi said recent contacts between Tehran and Washington, including indirect talks in Oman, have shown that the US is seeking to resolve the issues peacefully. He added that the ball is now “in America’s court to prove that they want to make a deal.”

“If [the Americans] are sincere, I’m sure we will be on the road to an agreement,” the senior diplomat said.

Tehran is ready to discuss its nuclear program with the US “provided that they are also ready to talk about sanctions,” he added. “One cannot accept the notion that Iran has to do certain things without the other side committing itself to do their share,” Takht-Ravanchi stressed.

He also appeared to suggest that Tehran had managed to resolve the key issue in the standoff with the US about its nuclear program. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that Tehran completely abandon the program and adopt a “zero enrichment” policy. Iran, however, has repeatedly said that such a policy was unacceptable while signaling readiness to compromise on the extent to which uranium is enriched, as well as suggesting it could dilute its fission materials stockpile.

“Our understanding is that [the Americans] have come to the conclusion that if you want to have a deal, you have to focus on the nuclear issue,” Takht-Ravanchi said, adding that the “issue of zero enrichment is not an issue anymore, and as far as Iran is concerned, it is not on the table anymore.”

The claim, however, contradicts the latest remarks by Trump on Friday, when he told reporters the US-proposed policy remains on the table and that “we don’t want any enrichment.”

Islamic Society of Tulsa hosts community open house after mosque proposal denied

Feb 16, 2026

Clifton Haskin

TULSA, Okla. — The Islamic Society of Tulsa welcomed families, neighbors, and community members to its mosque Sunday for a public open house aimed at building understanding and connection.

The event follows the denial of a proposed mosque in Broken Arrow. Broken Arrow City Council members rejected rezoning and permit applications for the project, citing concerns about insufficient infrastructure along Olive Avenue to handle the potential increase in weekly traffic.

Despite that decision, leaders at the Tulsa mosque said Sunday’s event was not about revisiting the proposal, but about inviting people to learn more about their faith.

Throughout the afternoon, guests toured the mosque, viewed art displays, and participated in discussions on Islamic traditions and culture. Visitors were also invited to attend a religious service and ask questions about what occurs inside the prayer space.

Lamiaa Ali, a board member, said the mosque has long been part of the Tulsa community.

“We are part of the fabric of this community; we have been here forever,” Ali said.

She added that events such as the open house are meant to demonstrate unity.

“We are all forming the Tulsa community together, and we need to stand together against any hatred out there,” Ali said.

Organizers said they spent weeks preparing for the event, hoping to create a welcoming environment where people could see firsthand what happens inside the mosque.

Kamran Muhammad, who attended the open house, said he was encouraged by the turnout.

“It’s great to see people who care enough to learn more and to educate themselves and open their minds and hearts,” Muhammad said.

Staff did not allow video during the religious service but permitted photos, which showed a packed prayer space filled with visitors.

Leaders said anyone with questions or interested in learning more is welcome to stop by the mosque near 51st Street and Yale Avenue.

A Muslim-owned thrift shop blends modest fashion, faith and sustainability

 ULAA KUZIEZ

FEB 15, 2026

NEW YORK — Kadjahtou Balde has a hard time parting with some of the vintage gems that make it into her Harlem thrift shop — a silk skirt adorned with traditional Palestinian embroidery, a pink wool sweater and an embellished blazer in perfect condition.

“Look at the level of detail on this abaya,” she said while unfurling a black dress handstitched with turquoise geometric designs, a type of garment often worn by Muslim women. “It’s so beautiful, I kind of wish I could keep it.”

Ms. Balde has long been an avid thrifter and sustainable fashion enthusiast. But even in a city with a bounty of vintage and thrift shops, she couldn’t always find pieces that fit her needs as a Muslim woman who dresses modestly — and fashionably. So when her father asked for help revamping his struggling Harlem gift shop last year, Balde knew a thrift store that celebrated modest fashion could become a much needed space.

“My dad told me that he was tired,” Ms. Balde said. “I decided that I want to help him, but I want to do it in a way that aligns with my values: Islam and sustainability.”

Last May, the shop opened as Modify Thrift on Malcolm X Boulevard. Offering unique modest pieces, it has also become a community space shaped by sustainability and Muslim sisterhood.

The secular world’s focus on Muslim women’s clothing, particularly head coverings, has prompted discriminatory policies in Europe and arguments about women’s rights and Islamophobia in recent years in the U.S. Ms. Balde said her thrift store’s mix of street wear and cultural clothes debunks stereotypes about Muslim women being oppressed or having boring styles.

“Muslim women are some of the most fashionable people out there,” she said.

And in a post-9/11 New York where those who are visibly Muslim can be fearful of hate crimes, Ms. Balde said some women who wear hijabs have learned to use fashion as a way to blend in. She hopes her store can encourage them to revamp how they dress in a way that aligns with their modesty levels.

“How do we break that barrier and make it so that it is fun, it’s trendy to be a Muslim woman — to know how to layer, how to style, how to dress in a way that represents your values in the most stylish way possible?” Ms. Balde said.

The international modest fashion industry has grown in recent years, offering Muslim women more modest clothing options than ever. Yet, Ms. Balde said much of the growth has been driven by fast-fashion brands that rely on unethical production practices.

For her, running a store that extends the life cycle of clothing is not just a business choice but a form of worship. She says it’s an expression of her commitment to the Islamic command to be a steward of the Earth.

“As a Muslim, I know for sure that I cannot be a Muslim who consumes fast fashion only,” said Ms. Balde, who also leads the city’s first Muslim environmental justice organization, Faithfully Sustainable. “We have to be people who care for the planet and for our neighbor.”

For Hafeezat Bishi, a 25-year-old Manhattan resident in the midst of revamping her personal style with a wardrobe of high-quality materials, thrift shopping helps her push back against the culture of overconsumption that she said some Muslim-owned modest fashion brands promote.

“Going into Modify really helps me re-center my purpose,” Ms. Bishi said. “It fuels my justice-based faith, and at the end of the day, I feel like I’m doing something not just for myself, but the greater good of the community and the Earth.”

Others, like Harlem resident Ella Smith, are drawn to thrift shops for more practical reasons, like rising costs and limited affordable options.

“(I) want to see if (I) can find something no one else has — catch a good, great bargain for a few bucks,” Ms. Smith said.

The majority of Modify Thrift’s racks are filled by donations from the local community, but it also sources inventory through purchased items and consignment. On a Friday afternoon in January, Assistant Operations Manager Nabiha Ali sifted through large bags of donations, inspecting pieces for quality materials like wool and cotton before pricing them.

Ms. Ali said she often fields questions from customers about what qualifies as a modest piece. She explains that it can mean looser styles that cover the limbs and neckline, though she encourages a range of pieces that on their own may not offer coverage, but when layered and styled can become modest.

“Working at Modify has taught me that no two Muslim women look the same,” Ali said. “It’s just really personal and individual, and everyone’s on a different point in their journey.”

Connecting with neighbors is central to Ms. Balde’s vision. Harlem has long been a cultural and fashion capital shaped by decades of African American creativity.

“Harlem has an insane crowd of people who just have the most insane style,” she said, adding that Harlemites will dress fashionably on Sundays for church.

Before beginning renovations at the store last year, she said she introduced herself to people in the neighborhood and got to know them. It was an approach she learned from her father, who began building relationships in Harlem in 2001, first as a street vendor then as a shop owner.

Then, just three months postpartum, Ms. Balde got to work building her dream shop with her father. She documented their process through vlogs on Instagram, quickly gaining traction. And in between their DIY projects, the father-daughter duo shared all their meals together for the first time.

“I was just enjoying moments I never had as a kid because he was always working,” she said. “He did the hard work so that we could actually live out our dreams.”

Modify Thrift is meant to honor her father’s work in a neighborhood he has called home for decades, even as Ms. Balde said gentrification continues to push longtime small businesses out.

Ms. Balde said over the next few years, she hopes to scale up Modify and open immigrant-run modest thrift stores in every borough.

“I think business should exist as a way to benefit a community, and not just to profit off of community,” she said.

Did Trump tell Netanyahu he’d back Israeli strikes on Iran? What we know

Did Trump tell Netanyahu he’d back Israeli strikes on Iran? What we knowDid Trump tell Netanyahu he’d back Israeli strikes on Iran? What we know

US President Donald Trump, during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in December, assured that the US would support Israeli strikes on Iran, should the US not reach a deal with Iran on the regime's nuclear programme, US news outlet CBS News reported.

Citing two sources familiar with the matter, the report said that two months after the meeting, the discussions between the US military's senior figures and the intelligence community had begun to assess the possibilities of an Israeli strike on Iran.

The two nations share their stance against Iran's nuclear ballistic missile programme.

Netanyahu, on Monday, affirmed Israel's stance about Iran's nuclear programme, stating the deal between the US and Iran must include a complete dismantling of the nuclear infrastructure. He said, "If a deal is to be reached, it must include several key components; The first is that all enriched material has to leave Iran. The second is that there should be no enrichment capability- not stopping the enrichment process, but dismantling the equipment and the infrastructure that allows you to enrich in the first place.

According to the report, the United States shall not be interfering much with how Israel acts. Rather, Washington will assist Israel with mid-air refuelling and obtain overflight permissions from countries along Israel's potential routes.

This becomes important as Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, have publicly denied providing an airspace used for any strikes on Iran. Thus, it remains unclear which country will provide airspace for strike and refuelling purposes.

This comes as Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, departed for Switzerland on Sunday for a second round of renewed talks with the United States later this week.

Washington has kept up the pressure, with a new executive order imposing tariffs on countries trading with Iran taking effect, with additional sanctions targeting shipping firms and vessels tied to Iranian oil exports.

Alongside, the US is also increasing its military presence in the Gulf, as most recently, Trump ordered the world's largest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R Ford, along with its USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, to join the "armada" in the Middle East.

Iran has made its stance clear that it shall not give up its uranium enrichment. Addressing a forum in Tehran on February 8, Araghchi said Iran had “paid a very heavy price” for what it maintains is a peaceful nuclear programme.

“Why do we insist so much on enrichment and refuse to give it up even if a war is imposed on us? Because no one has the right to dictate our behaviour,” he said.

Tehran and Washington resumed negotiations in Muscat on February 6, months after earlier talks collapsed following Israel’s unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran last June, which triggered a 12-day war.

Trump’s border czar Tom Homan says small security force will stay in Minnesota as ICE agents pull back

Feb 16, 2026

White House border czar Tom Homan said a “small” security force will remain in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, including Minneapolis and St. Paul, even as more than 1,000 immigration agents withdraw from the region following a weeks-long enforcement surge.

Speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday, Homan said the reduced contingent would temporarily protect remaining personnel and respond “when our agents are out and they get surrounded by agitators and things got out of control.”

He did not define what constituted “small,” but added that several hundred more officers would leave by Monday and Tuesday, returning operations to their “original footprint.”

The drawdown marks the wind-down of “Operation Metro Surge,” which saw thousands of officers deployed to Minneapolis and St. Paul under the direction of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security described it as the largest immigration enforcement operation in its history. Homan said authorities had already removed “well over 1,000 people,” with several hundred more deportations expected before the surge formally concludes.

Homan also dismissed a recent Wall Street Journal report suggesting friction between him, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and her adviser Corey Lewandowski over deportation strategy under President Donald Trump, calling internal policy differences routine professional debates.

Tensions and protests in Minneapolis

The operation drew growing criticism as tensions escalated following the fatal shootings of two US citizens, Renee Nicole Good and ICU nurse Alex Pretti, by federal immigration agents. The deaths sparked widespread protests across several US cities, with demonstrators demanding accountability and changes to enforcement practices.

In Minneapolis and St. Paul, residents organised to warn immigrants of approaching agents and document ICE activity.

Homan said investigations into the shootings and related fraud cases would continue. Unlike Noem, who publicly defended the officers, Homan refrained from commenting on their conduct, saying he would “let the investigations play out.”

He reiterated that enforcement would continue nationwide and said future large-scale deployments would “depend on the situation,” even as Minnesota’s controversial surge winds down amid lingering public anger and scrutiny.

'Am not a politician anymore and can't be': Barack Obama reveals reason why 'Michelle would divorce' him

Feb 15, 2026

US former President Barack Obama said that his wife, Michelle, would divorce him during a wide-ranging interview.

"First of all, I'm not a politician anymore and I can't be, right?" Obama began.

"I mean, I guess technically I could run for, you know, city council or something, but I'm not in elected office. I don't have levers of power. I'm term limited out. And by the way, I believe in the Constitution and also I believe in my marriage and Michelle would divorce me if I even if I could run again," Daily Mail reported.

The remark, delivered with Obama's trademark humor, offered a rare public window into the influence Michelle Obama holds over her husband's decisions. It also highlighted the toll years at the center of American political life took on their family.

Obama has long acknowledged the sacrifices Michelle made during his ascent from Illinois state senator to back-to-back terms in the Oval Office.

Michelle has repeatedly spoken about the strain political life placed on their family, and has remained both his closest confidante throughout. Obama said that she is also a powerful force guiding over what comes next.

During the interview he emphasized that the couple's post-presidential mission is a shared one focused less on reclaiming power and more on cultivating the next generation.

'Michelle and I still have the capacity, not just here in the United States, but globally, to inspire and motivate young people and invite them in to this process,' Obama explained, describing their work through the Obama Foundation.

He framed the mission as essential at a moment when younger Americans face mounting challenges, from economic uncertainty to social isolation.

He argued that the role of him and his wife is to help empower others rather than lead from the front.

"That's going to come from the 20, 30-year-old's who know firsthand what it means to not be able to buy a house," he said. "They're the ones who are going to remake our institutions so that they are consistent with the values that are, I think, timeless."

The Obamas' new presidential center in Chicago set to open in June will serve as the physical embodiment of that vision: part museum, part civic hub, and part training ground for emerging leaders.

Trump’s America and labelling of Kwankwaso, Fulani and Nigerian Muslims

February 16, 2026

I write this with deep concern—not anger, but concern—over what increasingly appears to be a troubling pattern in the posture of the United States under President Donald Trump towards Nigeria, particularly its Muslim communities and Northern leadership.

Since Trump’s return to office, a narrative has steadily gathered momentum in Washington: that Nigeria is a theatre of “Christian genocide,” orchestrated or tolerated by Muslim political actors. It is a grave allegation. It is also one that many credible Nigerian authorities, religious leaders, security experts, and independent analysts have consistently challenged as simplistic, selective and dangerously misleading.

Nigeria’s security crisis is real. Terrorism, banditry, communal clashes, and criminal violence have devastated communities—Muslim and Christian alike—in Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Benue, Plateau, Kaduna and beyond. But to reduce this complex web of criminality, governance failure, climate pressure and arms proliferation into a one-dimensional religious war is not analysis; it is advocacy.

The genesis of this framing can be traced to lobbying efforts and reports amplified in foreign policy circles—some originating from discredited advocacy groups, whose data and claims have been publicly questioned by investigative journalists. Yet, these narratives have found fertile ground among certain US lawmakers and religious pressure blocs eager to fit Nigeria into a broader global persecution template.

President Trump’s earlier designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”, CPC, over alleged religious persecution was controversial. The re-designation months later reinforced the perception that Washington had settled on a narrative, regardless of Nigeria’s internal complexities.

Driven by this ill-informed framing, Trump ordered a Christmas Day airstrike on Sokoto—historically the seat of Nigeria’s Islamic Caliphate—as a symbolic gesture aimed at appeasing his Christian constituency. The strike occurred despite Sokoto being neither an epicentre of terrorism nor banditry. The Muslims did not protest the deliberate provocation, even after discovering that local collaborators were feeding Americans the so-called ‘Christian genocide’ narrative as a strategic ploy to influence Nigeria’s 2027 presidential tickets.

Now comes the introduction of the “Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026” by US lawmakers Chris Smith, Riley Moore, Brian Mast, Mario Diaz-Balart and Bill Huizenga. The bill seeks sanctions—including visa bans and asset freezes—against former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and certain Fulani-affiliated groups such as the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.

More disturbingly, the legislation appears designed to pave the way for categorising Muslim political leaders as well as “Fulani-ethnic nomad militias” as foreign terrorist organisations.

It is so worrisome to scandalise a prominent political figure like Kwankwaso—a Muslim who is not known as a religious extremist—on the eve of his alignment ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming presidential election is deeply scandalous. Equally dangerous is the attempt to criminalise an entire ethnic identity under the sweeping label of “Fulani militia,” setting a perilous precedent.

Criminal elements exist across all ethnic and religious lines in Nigeria. But the Fulani, like the Igbo, Yoruba, Tiv, Kanuri, Ijaw or any other group, are a diverse population numbering in the millions. Collective blame is not justice; it is profiling.

Nigeria has welcomed increased U.S. military engagement, with AFRICOM officials meeting Nigerian security leaders and American troops now permitted to operate in the country. The government has also invested millions of dollars in diplomatic outreach and strategic lobbying. Yet the shift from partnership to punitive labelling raises an uncomfortable question: what exactly is Washington seeking?

And more importantly, what does Trump’s new posture mean for Nigerians, Muslims and non  Muslims alike? Should it push us toward suspicion of one another or toward questioning the motives behind externally driven narratives, including those shaped by controversial reports from certain advocacy groups, especially the Onitsha-based Intersociety operated by a screwdriver salesman and other IPOB platforms?

If the concern is truly religious freedom, then policy must be anchored on verifiable evidence, not selective outrage. Terrorism’s epicentres—Borno under Boko Haram, Zamfara under banditry networks, Niger under insurgent infiltration—do not fit neatly into a Christian-versus-Muslim binary. Victims in these theatres include imams, pastors, farmers, traders and children of every faith.

As I reflected in my previous articles, the narrative that Nigeria’s Muslims are collectively complicit in anti-Christian persecution is not only inaccurate; it is inflammatory. It risks deepening mistrust within Nigeria’s fragile social fabric. It emboldens extremists who thrive on polarisation. And it externalises what should remain a sovereign, evidence-driven security discourse.

But sanctions based on politicised framing or fictitious advocacy-driven reports by secessionist and anti-Muslim groups undermine the credibility of international accountability mechanisms.

If President Trump’s America truly seeks stability in West Africa, it must engage Nigeria in partnership, not profiling; in evidence, not emotion; in diplomacy, not designation.

Nigeria’s Muslims and Fulani ethnic groups do not need appeasement. They need fairness. Our country needs fact-based engagement, not fear.

Lawmakers Disagree As Ndume Seeks Deployment Of US Troops To Nigeria

February 16, 2026

Two members of the House of Representatives have expressed divergent views on Senator Ali Ndume’s call for the deployment of United States troops to Nigeria amid worsening insecurity in the North-East.

Naija News reports that Ndume had, on Friday, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, endorsed the deployment of US soldiers to Borno State to assist in combating insurgency and banditry.

“The fact that the Americans are now helping us fight insurgency is a welcome development. We have been looking for this support for a long time and have made many efforts to get it, but have failed,” Ndume said.

“Now that we have this window of opportunity, we must utilise it. I have complained many times that our major setback in this fight is a lack of certain resources; now, America has agreed to provide those resources free of charge,” he added.

Reacting, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, in an interview with Punch, stressed that the debate should centre on the role and capabilities of US troops rather than their number.

“The issue is not additional or fewer numbers, but what role and capabilities they are bringing to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria. At present, we are focused on training and technology enablers that would enhance our capacities to defeat the adversary,” he said.

Naija News reports that the lawmaker questioned critics of foreign support.

“Would those opposed to such efforts prefer the nation continue to haemorrhage from insecurity, terrorism, banditry, and ceaseless kidnapping?

“Our position would therefore be that if there is a needed capacity gap to fill, then by all means, let it be provided. If not, then no need for more,” Benson stated.

However, Chairman of the House Committee on Air Force, Alhassan Rurum, disagreed, arguing that the Nigerian Armed Forces could defeat terrorism independently if adequately funded and equipped.

“I’m not in support of the American Army deployment to Nigeria. Our Armed Forces are capable of handling our security challenges. We only need to properly fund and provide modern equipment for them,” he said.

Middle Belt Forum Backs Proposal

The Middle Belt Forum expressed support for Ndume’s proposal, urging US troops to operate professionally.

The National President of the forum, Dr Bitrus Pogu, said intelligence gathering and understanding the operational environment were crucial.

“One important thing is about intelligence, and I think they are already getting that intel. They also have to study those who have been sent to assess the situation carefully,” Pogu said.

He warned that internal compromise within Nigerian security forces could complicate foreign troop operations.

“A foreign army will find it very difficult to operate. So, if they are going to do it together with the soldiers or the police on the ground, a lot of study and intelligence must first be made available through those who have come earlier,” he added.

Pogu suggested that US forces could focus on air support while Nigerian troops handle ground operations.

“For instance, the advice can be that our troops do the ground work while the foreign troops concentrate on the air, given their technological advantage.

“The ultimate goal is to flush out terrorists and restore peace across the country. What we are after is to flush the terrorists out and have peace in Nigeria. So, I’m in support,” he said.

Spokesman of the forum, Luka Binniyat, also decried rising terrorist activities in the Middle Belt.

“If foreign military support will help degrade terror networks, improve intelligence gathering, and restore confidence to vulnerable communities, then it should be welcomed.

“The security and survival of our people must come first. The Middle Belt cannot afford hesitation in confronting terror in all its forms,” he said.

ACF Seeks Clarification

The Arewa Consultative Forum said it had not taken a firm position, citing the need for clarity on the details of the proposed US military involvement.

“ACF is worried that full details of the US military involvement are yet to be made public, which is a cause for concern,” said its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba.

“There are legal and constitutional implications, such as the need for the National Assembly’s approval, because it involves foreign military forces acting in Nigeria’s territory,” he added.

The Forum of Northern Christians and the Federal Capital Territory, led by Chairman Joseph Hayab, supported the proposal.

“There is nothing wrong with the US backing Nigeria to save the country from terrorist attacks,” he said, adding that any partnership that effectively addresses insecurity should be embraced.

Meanwhile, the Coalition of Northern Groups expressed a mixed stance.

“Recently, we supported other African countries in maintaining peace. So why can’t we solve our security issues?

“Technically, we are in support, and then again we are not in support,” said the Gombe State Chairman of the group, Mohammed Deba.

High prices keep sales low in Cairo as residents prepare for Ramadan

16 Feb, 2026

Muslims across Egypt are preparing for the start of the holy month of Ramadan on Tuesday. But at the Sayyida Zeinab market in Cairo’s Old Islamic neighborhood, rising

"Prices are definitely high and increase every year compared to the previous year, so demand is low," says Cairo resident Hossam Mohamed Sobhi.

"For example, a lantern that we used to buy last year for between 50-60 pounds ($1.1-1.3) costs now 150-200 pounds ($3.2-4.2) pounds, which is double."

Traders are doing what they can to provide for customers with different budgets, sayd vendor Mohamed El Sayyed:

"Sales are lower than in previous years, and prices are somehow high, especially for all imported goods, therefore, we have introduced three different categories for each item: expensive, medium, and cheap."

But shopkeepers say they have to think of the bottom line and can’t lower prices any further, without losing money.

Ibrahim El Khatib sells dates at the Sayyida Zeinab market:

Some people are demanding that date prices be lower, but that's impossible, prices range between 20-35 Egyptian pounds. (less than $1). The truck that brings the dates from Aswan does not cost less than 10,000 Egyptian pounds ($212) for transportation.”

Egyptian authorities have allocated more than $850 million to support vulnerable families during the festive period. Government workers will receive their salaries early.

Ramadan is expected start on 17 February and run to the 19 March.

Sokoto rolls out 1bn Ramadan feeding, targets 34,000 meals daily

February 15, 2026

The Sokoto State Government has approved 1 billion for the 2026 Ramadan Feeding Programme, with plans to serve 34,000 plates of food daily to vulnerable residents across the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu officially flagged off the programme on Sunday at the History Bureau in Sokoto, describing it as a key social intervention aimed at easing the burden on fasting Muslims and strengthening compassion, unity and community support during the holy month.

According to the governor, the number of feeding centres has been increased from 155 to 170 following public demand, with each centre designed to cater for about 200 beneficiaries at a time.

“I can assure you all that the meals would be hygienic, well-packaged and of high quality. Ad-hoc staff have been engaged to ensure smooth operations throughout Ramadan,” Aliyu said.

He explained that the feeding initiative forms part of his administration’s broader efforts to promote Islamic values and social welfare, including the rehabilitation of mosques and schools, as well as the payment of monthly allowances to Jumu’ah mosques.

Aliyu called on religious bodies, philanthropists and members of the public to complement government efforts by supporting the less privileged, stressing that collective responsibility is key to ensuring no one goes hungry during Ramadan.

The governor noted that the programme, initiated 19 years ago during the administration of former governor Aliyu Wamakko, has continued to provide relief to thousands of residents, underscoring the state’s sustained commitment to poverty alleviation.

Chairman of the Ramadan Feeding Committee, Aliyu Attahiru, said all logistics had been put in place to guarantee transparency and effective service delivery. The Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Jabir Sani Maihulla, urged committee members to discharge their duties with sincerity, discipline and fear of Allah.

Representing the Sultan of Sokoto, Malam Boyi commended the governor’s commitment to social welfare and assured him of royal support and prayers.

The event was attended by top government officials, lawmakers, traditional rulers, Islamic scholars and community leaders, and concluded with the distribution of food items to designated centres, marking the formal take-off of the 2026 Ramadan Feeding Programme.

2026 Ramadan: Sultan Tells Nigerian Muslims To Look Out For New Moon

February 16, 2026

By Oladipo Abiola

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged muslims in the country to watch out for the new moon for the Ramadan fast as from the evening of Tuesday, 17th February 2026.

Naija News reports that his message was contained in a statement issued by the General, NSCIA, Prof Is-haq Oloyede.

According to the Sultan, if the moon is sighted on Tuesday, February 17, Ramadan will commence on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Otherwise, fasting will begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

He said the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), in collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has made arrangements for the official observation.

Meanwhile, the Tomatoes Growers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria has dismissed fears of a possible hike in the prices of tomatoes and other vegetables during the forthcoming Ramadan fast, saying a bumper harvest and market timing would likely drive prices down.

The Kaduna State Chairman of the association, Mr Rabiu Zuntu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

Zuntu explained that, unlike previous years when tomato and pepper prices surged during Ramadan, this year’s fasting period coincides with the peak harvest season in many northern states.

ADC Tackles Tinubu For Attending Argungu Fishing Festival Amidst Terror Attacks In The Country

February 15, 2026

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says Nigerians are tired of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the government of President Bola Tinubu.

According to ADC, the current administration has misplaced its priorities and has failed to give assurances to the citizens.

In a statement on Sunday by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party submitted that while Nigerians need a government and a president who demonstrably care and will do everything necessary to protect the people, such is lacking under the present administration.

Naija News reports that the ADC made its submission against the backdrop of the decision by President Tinubu to attend the Argungu fishing festival in Kebbi State on Saturday.

However, the party argued that fishing festivals should not be the next agenda when terrorists are invading some locations in the country.

The party submitted that about 1,300 Nigerians were reportedly killed in 41 days, and hundreds of others were still in captivity, including nursing mothers and children.

It added that Tinubu demonstrated that he is out of touch with reality when he chose to attend a festival while funeral processions grow longer across the country as terrorists kill, burn, and abduct citizens under his watch.

The ADC particularly expressed grave concern over a video allegedly linked to the Kaiama abductions in Kwara State, in which insurgents were seen openly challenging official figures on the number of victims abducted.

The opposition party warned that the growing boldness of armed groups, particularly within the Kwara corridor, indicates that the government may be losing control of a strategic part of the country that could provide terrorists a foothold into other parts of the country.

The full statement reads:

“The African Democratic Congress, ADC, is deeply troubled by the continued deterioration of the security situation in parts of the country, particularly in Kwara State.

“We are especially concerned that at a time of rising insecurity, the President and Commander-in-Chief was in Argungu attending a fishing festival, even as credible reports indicate that nearly 1,300 Nigerians have been killed in the last 41 days. Once again, innocent Nigerians and their families are left to bear the tragic brunt of terror while the President fiddles away a festival.

“We are also greatly disturbed by the emergence of a video allegedly released by terrorists in connection with the recent abductions in Kaiama Local Government Area, challenging official figures on the number of kidnapped victims. This development comes amid fresh reports of terrorist activity in Patigi Local Government Area of the same state as recently as last night.

“It will be recalled that the southern part of Kwara State has been under sustained terrorist pressure since last year. Now, with attacks spreading northward at scale, terrorists appear to be tightening their grip on the state and exploiting it as a potential safe haven. The implications for the wider country are both clear and alarming. It is therefore shocking that the President could choose to attend a fishing festival while terrorists threaten to expand their operations.

“For clarity, we wish to underline the strategic significance of what is unfolding in Kwara State. The Kaiama axis provides a direct link into Oyo State. Any sustained insurgent activity within this corridor could therefore create wider vulnerabilities across parts of the North Central and South West. The situation in Kwara State must not be treated as an isolated incident but as a potential early warning of geographic expansion by terror actors.

“When non-state actors become sufficiently emboldened to publicly contradict official figures, it signals a troubling erosion of deterrence and raises serious questions about the management of both the security and information environments. But this could only mean one thing: the terrorists now view kidnapping as a commercial enterprise, and they are determined not to be short-changed in the ransom negotiations they expect will follow.

“On previous occasions, we have reiterated our longstanding position that the payment of ransom to terrorists, whether directly or indirectly, risks further entrenching the criminal economy that sustains mass abductions. While the safe return of victims remains paramount, disguising ransom payments as rescue operations only creates perverse incentives for future attacks.

“Given the gravity of the situation, the ADC expects the Federal Government to immediately undertake the following actions:

“First, mount a robust and well-coordinated rescue operation to bring every abducted Nigerian safe home. Second, issue a full and transparent public briefing that resolves the emerging discrepancies around the number of victims. Third, order an urgent security audit of the Kaiama and Kainji Lake forest corridor. Fourth, deploy strengthened interstate security coordination across the Kwara, Niger, and Oyo axis to shut down further terrorist movement. Fifth, maintain regular and credible public communication to restore confidence and deny terrorists the advantage of propaganda.

“Nigerians are tired of the APC and Bola Tinubu-led government’s assurances on security while citizens continue to be slaughtered at will. What the country needs is a government and a president who demonstrably care and will do everything necessary to protect the people. That urgency is tragically lacking under the present administration.

“The ADC will continue to hold the Federal Government accountable while supporting every credible effort to defeat terrorism and reclaim every part of our national territory. Nigeria must never appear weak in the face of terror.”

Indonesia’s Top Clerical Body Declares Littering Rivers and Seas Haram

February 16, 2026

Jakarta. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the country's top Islamic clerical body, has issued a fatwa declaring it haram, or religiously forbidden, to dispose of waste in rivers, lakes, and the sea, citing mounting environmental damage and public health risks.

The ruling was announced on Sunday during a river clean-up and tree-planting event in Sentul, West Java, held to mark National Waste Awareness Day and ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

MUI Deputy Secretary General for Economic Affairs Hazuarli Halim said the decision followed extensive deliberations on the increasingly visible impact of environmental degradation.

“The fatwa prohibiting indiscriminate waste disposal is the result of serious consideration. Environmental pollution harms life and public health, and that is why we have declared this practice haram,” Hazuarli said.

He explained that from an Islamic perspective, protecting the environment is a moral obligation that brings spiritual merit, while polluting it constitutes a sin.

“Preserving the environment is a duty and earns reward. On the other hand, damaging it is haram and sinful. If state law carries criminal penalties, religion carries moral consequences,” he said.

MUI plans to widely disseminate the ruling through mosque networks and religious preachers across Indonesia. According to data from the Religious Affairs Ministry, the country has around 800,000 mosques that could serve as hubs for environmental education.

“If these 800,000 mosques actively promote environmental literacy, public awareness will grow. Sermons and religious lectures must include messages about protecting nature,” Hazuarli said.

PM Wong urges Singaporeans to uphold harmony during Chinese New Year and Ramadan

16 Feb 2026

SINGAPORE, Feb 16 — Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong called on all Singaporeans to continue upholding the values of harmony during the upcoming festive celebrations.

Speaking in his Chinese New Year video message, Wong said this year’s celebration is especially meaningful to the nation, as Muslims also begin observing the blessed month of Ramadan.

“The coming together of these occasions reminds us of the beauty of multicultural Singapore.

“This harmony did not happen by chance, it was built over generations through mutual respect, trust, and understanding,” he said in a video posted on his official Facebook page on Monday.

Chinese New Year this year falls on February 17, while Muslims will start fasting on February 19.

According to Wong, the government is also working to provide families with greater assurance through initiatives outlined in Budget 2026, which is a key priority and a foundation of society.

“In this year’s budget, we have taken further steps, from CDC (Community Development Council) vouchers for every household to additional credits for every child and more retirement support for seniors.

“When we care for our families, we strengthen the bonds that hold our society together, we should also extend this care to our communities,” he added. — Bernama

Coventry Street illuminated: UK’s largest Ramadan display back for fourth year

15 Feb 2026

LONDON, Feb 15 — Returning for its fourth year, the UK’s first and largest Ramadan light display once again illuminates Coventry Street in London, attracting crowds and public interest.

According to Anadolu Ajansi, London’s Ramadan lights are back, lighting up the heart of the West End as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on Friday took part in the switch-on celebrations ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

More than 30,000 energy-efficient LED lights will shine nightly from 5 pm to 5 am local time until the end of Ramadan on March 19.

The display reads “Happy Ramadan” throughout the holy month before switching overnight to “Happy Eid” next month.

The Ramadan lights are drawing many visitors to Coventry Street to view and take photographs of the display.

Heather, who is in her 60s, is one of them. She told Anadolu that she found the lights “lovely”.

“I think it is great that we can celebrate all faiths and be totally inclusive in London. It is brilliant, really nice to see,” she said.

Heather added that people of all nationalities and faiths are in London, and that she enjoys seeing everyone celebrate.

For his part, Dylan, an 18-year-old Christian, said: “As much as I believe that England is a Christian country, I also think that London is a very diverse city.”

Dylan said he believes people need to love neighbours who come from different religious backgrounds.

“Maybe sometimes we don’t agree with someone, but as a Christian, I believe we should at least have the respect to let people think what they want to think,” he said.

“I’m Christian. I have Muslim friends here with me today. It’s just all about friendship. And that’s how I see it,” he added.

Also speaking to Anadolu, Ramsha, another London resident, said she feels happy when she sees the Ramadan lights.

“There are a large number of Muslims in London, and seeing our tradition and religion be celebrated makes us feel very included, and it’s very pretty to look at,” she noted.

Saying that she also visits the Christmas lights, Ramsha added that she believes many non-Muslims come to see the Ramadan lights “because it just looks nice and it makes you feel happy”.

“For people who don’t know about Ramadan, this is a good way for them to know that it’s a festival for Muslims taking place right now.” — Bernama-Anadolu

Malaysian retail, hospitality boom as back-to-back CNY and Ramadan celebrations boost sales

16 Feb 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 — For Muslims and the Chinese community in Malaysia, this year carries a special significance. Tomorrow, the Chinese community will usher in the Year of the Horse, while Muslims are expected to begin fasting with the start of Ramadan two days later, before celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri next month.

The overlapping festivities promise double the merriment for the majority of Malaysians, further highlighting the beauty of harmony in a nation defined by its diversity of race, culture and religion.

Interestingly, this joyful convergence will continue over the coming years, particularly from 2029 to 2031 when Muslims and the Chinese observe ‘Gong Xi Raya’, the simultaneous celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year.

Occurring once every 33 years, Malaysia previously experienced ‘Gong Xi Raya’ from 1963 to 1965 and again from 1996 to 1998.

The festive spirit is truly extraordinary when both celebrations coincide.

The double celebrations also bring a windfall for the retail sector as the country’s two major communities tend to spend a little more in preparing for their respective festivities.

In the hospitality and food industries, the back-to-back celebrations are not merely a boost in sales but also an opportunity for players to showcase creativity in crafting dishes that appeal across cultures. This year, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, it will also be a platform to highlight Malaysia’s uniqueness to foreign visitors.

Executive chef Peter Lee and executive sous chef Afham Afiq Maya Matkhir of Sunway Resort Hotel believe the Chinese New Year celebrations and Ramadan are a “bonus” for the food and beverage and hospitality industries and an opportunity for them to demonstrate their expertise in blending two cultures into their dishes.

According to Lee, the hotel is drawing inspiration from spicy Sichuan cuisine for its Chinese New Year and Ramadan buffet promotions, themed ‘Roots of Prosperity’ and ‘Jemput Makan’ respectively.

For both promotions, the Sichuan cuisine from southwest China features lamb as one of its signature ingredients, though prepared in a way that resonates with local tastes. Among the dishes diners can expect are ‘Sichuan Roasted Whole Lamb with Pau’ and ‘Sichuan Shaokao’ (skewered grilled meats).

“The whole lamb is marinated with our special house-made blend of chilli powder, garlic, sesame oil and cumin before being roasted, and can be enjoyed with a dipping sauce made from Chinese coriander and bird’s eye chilli.

“As for the ‘Sichuan Shaokao’, it consists of skewered meats and seafood coated with aromatic spices, grilled and served fresh to order,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, Afham Afiq said for the Ramadan promotion, the Sichuan-style roasted whole lamb will be prepared with flavours reminiscent of the local kambing golek.

“We will be serving the same roasted lamb (as in the Chinese New Year buffet) throughout Ramadan, but paired with ‘nasi minyak’ instead of ‘pau’ (steamed bun),” he said.

Lee added that during Ramadan and Chinese New Year, many corporate companies organise dining events and iftar (breaking of fast) gatherings.

“This is an opportunity for them to celebrate both occasions with a fusion of traditional dishes from two cultures. If they are entertaining foreign guests, this is also the perfect time for them to experience the vibrancy and harmony of how Malaysians celebrate two of the biggest festivals through traditional cuisine,” he said.

Shopping malls bring celebrations to life

Not to be left behind, shopping malls, too, are eager to display their flair in decorating their premises to amplify the festive mood and attract shoppers.

These venues become focal points for people who, besides shopping, also take the opportunity to pose for photographs against the elaborate and stunning festive backdrops. It is also not uncommon for videos of decorations in shopping malls, particularly in the capital city, to go viral on social media.

Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur, a shopping mall under Berjaya Assets Bhd, is “all dressed up” this Chinese New Year, featuring Chinese imperial dynasty-themed décor.

Its assistant general manager for marketing and operations Alex Liew said festive decorations at shopping malls in Malaysia have become more than just seasonal embellishments, serving instead as vibrant showcases of the country’s rich multicultural heritage.

In fact, he added, shoppers eagerly look forward to the elaborate decorations unveiled at malls each festive season.

“In Malaysia, it’s very unique because we have a lot of shopping malls, and we really go all out when it comes to (decorating our premises during) the festive season. I think a lot of people actually look forward to our decorations,” he told Bernama.

He noted that elaborate Chinese New Year displays, such as those in Berjaya Times Square this year, are rarely seen in other major foreign cities and even in China.

Liew said such initiatives not only enhance the shopping experience but also celebrate Malaysia’s culture and heritage.

“Many expatriates and tourists are amazed at how we decorate our mall (Berjaya Times Square) for each festival. Some even upload their experience on social media, bringing our uniqueness to the eyes of the world,” he said.

In Intermark Mall, also in Kuala Lumpur, its Peranakan-inspired Chinese New Year theme ‘Heritage in Bloom’ offers visitors an opportunity to experience tradition through a contemporary lens that reflects the optimism and new beginnings of the season.

Intermark Mall general manager for marketing Evelyn Woon said the theme draws inspiration from the rich artistry of Peranakan culture and highlights Malaysia’s multicultural identity and layered history.

The mall’s ground floor atrium has been transformed into a vibrant Peranakan-inspired setting featuring intricate floral designs, ornate patterns and colourful décor, anchored by a signature Peranakan House installation.

“Expect to find authentic Peranakan kebayas, and intricately crafted beaded Nyonya sandals and flavours at Intermark Mall this season,” Woon added. — Bernama

‘You are in my radar’: King issues stern warning to all govt agencies, including MACC, in anti-graft war

16 Feb 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has issued a direct warning that more individuals across all government departments and agencies are on his personal “radar” as he intensifies his mission to combat corruption.

In a decree issued to the Royal Press Office today, His Majesty warned that his scrutiny is not limited to just a few departments.

He explicitly named the Royal Malaysia Police, the Immigration Department, the Customs Department, and even the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) itself as being under watch.

“Regardless of your rank… likewise the agents who act as ‘middlemen’ as well as suppliers… you too are within the ‘radar’,” the King decreed.

His Majesty warned those involved not to assume their actions go unnoticed, invoking a Malay proverb and revealing he has his own sources of information.

“As the saying goes, ‘whoever eats chili will feel the heat’… do not think that I do not know anything; I also have my own intelligence,” he said.

Sultan Ibrahim described corruption as a “betrayal of the people’s trust” that will not be tolerated, and stressed that the effort to eradicate it must not be merely cosmetic or rhetorical, as no one can escape the law.

He also issued a clear directive for swift action against any officer who fails to carry out their duties with integrity.

“If there are officers who are unable to carry out their trust honestly, give the opportunity to those who are more qualified and clean to carry out that responsibility,” His Majesty decreed, adding that transfers must be implemented without delay.

Ahmad Maslan: Umno won’t ‘take advantage’ of Bersatu crisis, will review applications to join

16 Feb 2026

PONTIAN,  Feb 16 —  Any decision on allowing political leaders to join Umno will be determined by the party’s Supreme Council (MKT) based on three principles, namely “Rumah Bangsa”, National Consultation and Grand Collaboration.

Umno MKT member Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the council would decide on any application to join the party.

“If they want to be with us (Umno), the MKT will decide,” he said when met after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Pontian Hospital Additional Building, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Ahmad, who is also deputy works minister, was commenting on claims that several Bersatu leaders, including former deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, would join Umno.

He stressed that Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) would not take advantage of the problems faced by other parties, adding that both would continue to strengthen themselves based on their own capabilities.

Last Friday, Hamzah was expelled from Bersatu with immediate effect for allegedly violating the party constitution. — Bernama

Protesters demand action against MACC chief Azam Baki at KL rally

15 Feb 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15 — A crowd dressed in black gathered in the city centre today to demand the resignation of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who is currently embroiled in a shareholding scandal.

Led by institutional reform group Bersih, the protesters criticised the government’s response to the controversy as too soft and called for sterner action to be taken against Azam.

Among those present was former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who delivered a speech reminding the ruling coalition that it was the people’s frustration with systemic corruption that brought it to power.

“You say we whine and nyet, nyet, nyet. Well, this 22 years of whining and nyet-nyet-nyet against power and the corrupted is what made you prime minister,” Rafizi said, wearing black in solidarity with the protest’s theme.

The black attire is intended to symbolise what the protesters see as a deep institutional rot that threatens the coalition’s reformist image.

Azam faces mounting public scrutiny after Bloomberg reported that the MACC chief allegedly still held shares far above what is permitted for civil servants in 2025.

Public service officers are reportedly allowed to own shares valued at no more than RM100,000 (at the time of purchase) or 5 per cent of a company’s paid-up capital, whichever amount is lower.

MPs like Rafizi said the expose is a blemish on the MACC’s image as a commission mandated to fight corruption.

Azam responded to the allegation with a lawsuit, maintaining he had not broken any laws. The MACC chief commissioner is also refusing to take a leave of absence pending the investigation by a special task force set up following Bloomberg’s report.

Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, also a former minister in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Cabinet, said today’s protest was held for the exact same reason a rally was held in 2022, which Anwar himself attended at the time.

That was the first time Azam was reported to own shares exceeding the permitted threshold for civil servants.

“We are assembling here for that same reason...an agency tasked with fighting corruption must be free (from negative influence). Today we have power, but what is the point of having power if we don’t want to create change?” he said, calling on the government to reform the MACC.

Rafizi, Nik Nazmi and six other PKR MPs urged the government to widen the special task force’s mandate to include probing allegations that a group of businessmen is using the commission to intimidate company owners, reportedly to force them to relinquish ownership.

Bloomberg reported the allegations in detail, citing MACC and police officers familiar with their modus operandi.

The commission denied the report, calling it baseless.

PM Anwar: Johor’s request for bigger share of tax income can be resolved amicably

By Ben Tan

15 Feb 2026

PONTIAN, Feb 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Johor’s request for the return of the state’s 25 per cent income tax revenue was not an issue and can be negotiated amicably.

Anwar said Johor currently was the highest recipient for the federal government’s expenditure that is used for various needs of its people.

“The federal allocation is used for the construction and upgrading of highways, ports and also the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

“So, the issue involving the return of taxes can be negotiated and resolved in an amicable way,” he said in his address at the at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hospital Pontian’s additional annex at Dataran Pontian here today.

Present during the event was Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

They were also accompanied by Pontian MP and deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and senior government officials.

Anwar said it doesn’t matter if the allocation is from the federal government or state government.

“It is all technical and what is important is that the benefits reaches the people without leakages,” he said.

Anwar explained that people-centric projects needed to be processed through tenders properly and implemented efficiently so that the benefit could be enjoyed by all.

Earlier, Onn Hafiz in his speech requested the Federal government to consider its request for the return of taxes.

The issue was previously voiced by Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail on July last year.

He said the 25 per cent tax return was important for Johor, where the state can speed up the implementation of critical projects if a portion of its tax revenue is returned.

Tunku Mohkota Ismail voiced this following several recent delays including the issue of the opening of Pasir Gudang Hospital, disruption of the autogate system at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB), as well as delays in the state’s flood mitigation project.

Investing in Infrastructure, Investing in the Future of Afghanistan

February 16, 2026

Infrastructure is the backbone of any nation’s development, shaping the economy, enhancing social services, and connecting communities. For Afghanistan, investing in infrastructure is not merely a policy choice; it is a strategic imperative that can determine the country’s trajectory toward sustainable growth, stability, and prosperity. Roads, power projects, schools, hospitals, and water systems are not only physical structures but also instruments that empower citizens, foster trade, and enable long-term national progress.

The launch of major road and energy projects across Afghanistan demonstrates a commitment to a future in which citizens have access to basic services and opportunities. Projects such as the Kabul–Bagram highway and new power generation initiatives reflect a vision where modern infrastructure becomes a catalyst for economic growth. Roads reduce travel time, facilitate trade, and connect rural areas to urban centers, while energy projects provide reliable electricity that powers homes, industries, and businesses. Together, these projects lay the foundation for economic diversification, creating new jobs and improving living standards for millions of Afghans.

Investing in infrastructure also has a profound multiplier effect on the economy. Each road constructed, bridge repaired, or power plant built generates employment in construction, engineering, logistics, and supporting services. It stimulates local markets by creating demand for materials, tools, and skilled labor, while simultaneously opening avenues for small businesses to thrive. In addition, modern infrastructure attracts private-sector investment, encouraging entrepreneurs and investors to contribute to economic growth, knowing that efficient transportation, energy, and communication networks support their ventures.

Beyond the immediate economic benefits, infrastructure investment strengthens national resilience. Efficient roads and reliable energy systems enhance disaster preparedness, support healthcare delivery, and facilitate educational access. Rural communities, which historically have faced isolation, can now connect to markets, hospitals, and schools, reducing inequalities and fostering a sense of inclusion in national development. Moreover, large-scale projects signal stability and progress to the international community, encouraging diplomatic and economic engagement that can further accelerate Afghanistan’s growth.

Strategic planning is key to ensuring that infrastructure investments yield long-term benefits. Projects must be implemented with transparency, efficiency, and sustainability in mind, ensuring that resources are used effectively and that the resulting structures serve the population for decades to come. This requires skilled workforce training, proper maintenance programs, and adherence to modern engineering and environmental standards. By embedding these principles into infrastructure development, Afghanistan can build systems that are not only functional today but adaptable to future needs, including technological advancements and population growth.

Infrastructure is also a unifying force. Roads linking distant provinces, electricity grids connecting cities and towns, and water networks reaching remote villages help bridge divides and promote social cohesion. When citizens see tangible improvements in their daily lives, trust in institutions grows, and a shared sense of national purpose strengthens. Development becomes a collective achievement, where the benefits of progress are visible and accessible to all.

Afghanistan stands at a critical juncture. By prioritizing infrastructure, the country can accelerate economic growth, improve the quality of life, and strengthen social and regional integration. These investments demonstrate a commitment to progress and reflect a broader vision for a resilient, self-reliant nation. For every road paved, every power plant constructed, and every facility built, Afghanistan moves closer to realizing its potential—a nation where opportunities are accessible, citizens are empowered, and the future is secure.

Investing in infrastructure is, therefore, not merely a development project; it is an investment in the future of Afghanistan itself. It embodies hope, stability, and the promise of a stronger nation where every citizen benefits from the nation’s growth. In building infrastructure, Afghanistan builds its future.

‘Ensure impartial probe into post-polls violence’

16 FEBRUARY 2026

Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB) yesterday expressed deep concern over incidents of violence in several districts following the 13th national parliamentary election, including two reported deaths and an allegation of rape.

In a statement, the rights platform called for swift and impartial investigations into the incidents.

It said violence was reported in different parts of the country after the polls, leaving two people dead.

Citing media reports, HRFB said one person was killed in Munshiganj and another in Bagerhat in incidents linked to post-election violence.

The forum also referred to reports of attacks in Sylhet, Cumilla, Narsingdi, Feni, Gazipur, Natore, Jhalakathi, Narail, Pabna, Bogura, Faridpur, Barguna, Jhenaidah, Chandpur, Patuakhali, Kishoreganj and Dinajpur, where many people were reportedly injured.

At the same time, a woman alleged that she was raped by supporters of a political rival for taking part in election campaigning on behalf of a party, the statement said.

“These incidents have raised concern about the overall security situation and the state of legal protection in the country during the post-election period,” HRFB said.

The forum said retaliatory violence, politically motivated attacks, violence against women, and assaults on powerless or disadvantaged communities are unacceptable in a democratic society.

It identified religious and ethnic minorities, indigenous communities, culturally diverse groups, and persons with disabilities as particularly vulnerable during periods of political tension.

Such incidents weaken the rule of law and undermine citizens’ security, the statement added.

HRFB urged all political parties to send clear and strict messages at both the central and grassroots levels to ensure that all forms of violence, retaliatory attacks, intimidation, violence against women, and attacks on minority or marginalised communities stop immediately.

It said responsible political leadership is essential to maintaining a peaceful environment at the local level.

The forum also called on the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, and relevant government authorities to investigate each incident promptly and impartially, identify those involved, and bring them to justice.

Authorities must ensure the safety of affected individuals and provide justice, it said.

HRFB further urged that those spreading false or misleading information related to such incidents be held accountable.

The statement was signed by HRFB members, including human rights expert Hameeda Hossain; rights activist Sultana Kamal; Raja Devasish Roy; ZI Khan Panna, chairperson of Ain o Salish Kendra and acting convener of HRFB; Shaheen Anam, steering committee member of HRFB and executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation; and Sara Hossain, honorary executive director of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust.

Other signatories include Sanjeeb Drong, general secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum; Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh; Fauzia Moslem, president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad; and Shamsul Huda, executive director of the Association for Land Reforms and Development, among others.

Statement of the IEA on the 37th Anniversary of the Expulsion of Soviet Union’s Red Army from Afghanistan

February 16, 2026

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan extends its heartfelt congratulations to the noble Muslim people of Afghanistan and to the Mujahideen on the occasion of the anniversary of the defeat and withdrawal of the Red Army of the former Soviet Union from Afghanistan. This historic day stands as a moment of pride and gratitude, and as a shining chapter in the contemporary history of our homeland.

By the infinite mercy and assistance of Allah Almighty, the Afghan Mujahideen—through steadfast jihad, immense sacrifices, migration, and enduring hardships—were granted the honor of overcoming a great power and compelling its forces to withdraw from our sacred land. This victory remains a testament to the unyielding faith, resilience, and determination of the Afghan Muslim nation.

The liberation of Afghanistan from occupation for the third time within the past century, by the will and help of Allah Almighty, clearly demonstrates the firm resolve of our Muslim people to safeguard their religion, protect their independence, and defend their territorial integrity. Throughout successive invasions over the last hundred years, history has shown that aggression against Afghanistan is met with steadfast resistance and ultimate failure.

Those who harbor ill intentions toward our freedom and sovereignty should take heed from the lessons of the past and refrain from any actions that threaten the independence and Islamic values of our country.

The Islamic Emirate calls upon its brave and faithful countrymen to remain vigilant against all forms of conspiracy and subversion. By preserving unity, strengthening Islamic brotherhood, and adhering firmly to the path of their righteous predecessors, they shall continue to safeguard their religion, beliefs, and independence.

May peace and the mercy of Allah be upon the Afghan nation.
