Cooking And Serving Midday Meals Separately To Students Of Different Religions In West Bengal, Probe Ordered

A primary school in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district has been cooking and serving midday meals separately to students of different religions for years — a practice now under official scrutiny.

At Kishoriganj Manmohanpur Primary School, located in Purbasthali I block about 150 km from Kolkata, meals are prepared by two separate cooks. The school uses separate utensils and kitchens, though on a single gas connection, and meals are served to students in separate classrooms based on their religion.

The school’s present authorities and cooks claim the arrangement has been in place since 2000, when the midday meal scheme was introduced. The school has 72 students — 29 Muslims and 43 Hindus.

Once the issue came to the attention of the district administration, they ordered a probe, and the headmaster called a meeting of parents on Tuesday to address the situation.

“We have sent an enquiry team to the school. Action will be taken based on the report,” said Ayesha Rani, District Magistrate of Purba Bardhaman.

Speaking to The Indian Express over the phone, headmaster Tapas Ghosh said: “The students study together, sit in the same classroom, but the food is cooked and served separately. This has been the practice for years. I joined the school a year ago. I tried to intervene but failed. Today, I have called a meeting of parents and local panchayat members. We hope to resolve the issue.”

Cooks at the school confirmed the long-standing arrangement.

“They won’t eat food cooked by me. I’ve been cooking for Muslim students since the midday meal scheme began in 2000. The utensils and plates used are separate. The headmaster tried to change things, but couldn’t,” said Ranu Bibi, the cook assigned to Muslim students.

“I cook for the Hindu students. The gas connection is shared, but everything else — from kitchen space to utensils — is separate. It’s disheartening, but what can we do?” said Sonali Majumder.

Former headmaster Govinda Bhadra, who served from 2002 to 2022, said the arrangement dates back to the early days of the scheme. “Initially, only one cook was employed. When objections were raised by one community, another cook was hired. I tried several times to end the practice and even informed the Block Development Officer and school inspector. But no action was taken,” he said.

Local panchayat leaders said they were unaware of the practice and that they will speak to residents of the village.

“We were not informed of this. Now that we know, we will attend the meeting and ensure such a practice is stopped,” said Kanan Burman, Pradhan of Nasratpur Gram Panchayat, under which the school falls.

Mahbil Hussain Mondol, deputy pradhan of the same panchayat, added: “This is unacceptable. No such practice exists in other schools. The village has a 60:40 Muslim-Hindu population ratio. We will take steps to ensure this ends.”

“I don’t know when the practice started, but it is unwanted and should be stopped,” said Ganesh Gosain, a resident of the village.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Gets Registration With EC, Daripalla (Balance Scale) Polls Symbol Back

Jun 25, 2025

The Election Commission yesterday reinstated the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami along with its electoral symbol -- Daripalla (balance scale).

An official gazette notification was issued in this regard, signed by the EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

The notification means the Jamaat can now contest in national elections.

On June 1 of this year, the Appellate Division cleared the way for the Jamaat to get back its party registration and asked the Election Commission to decide on the next steps.

Three days later, the EC announced that it would restore Jamaat's registration and reinstate the "balance scale" as its official electoral symbol.

In December 2016, the Supreme Court decided that the "balance scale" symbol would be reserved exclusively for the judiciary as a symbol of justice.

This led the EC to drop the symbol from the official list through a gazette issued in March 2017.

Jamaat lost the right to contest parliamentary elections after the HC declared its registration with the EC illegal on August 1, 2013, following a writ petition.

Maulana Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, secretary general of the Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, along with 24 others, filed the petition on January 25, 2009, seeking a court order declaring the party's registration illegal.

The EC subsequently scrapped Jamaat's registration in October 2018 ahead of the 11th national election.

Jamaat later filed an appeal with the Appellate Division, challenging the HC verdict. The Appellate Division began hearing the appeal on December 3 last year.

On August 1 last year, four days before its ouster, the Awami League government banned Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and others through an executive order. The organisations were prohibited under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.

The interim government on August 28 last year lifted the ban on Jamaat, Shibir, and all of Jamaat's affiliated organisations.

Jamaat was first banned in the newly independent Bangladesh in 1972 over their anti-liberation role under a new constitutional provision that banned politics based on religion.

In 1976, the then-military regime repealed the restriction by issuing a martial law proclamation, allowing the formation and functioning of organisations based on religion.

Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani beats Cuomo in New York mayor race upset

25 Jun 2025

-----------

NEW YORK, June 25 — New York City Democrats chose 33-year-old Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani as their mayoral candidate in Tuesday’s elections, stunning his opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

“Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo, a political veteran who was vying to come back from a sexual harassment scandal, told supporters at an election night party.

“I called him, I congratulated him... he won.”

In what appears to be the left-leaning city’s rebuke of the Democratic party’s veteran moderates – and New York’s rarely claimed native son, Republican US President Donald Trump – Mamdani led with 43 per cent of the vote with 95 per cent of ballots counted, city officials reported.

The party’s primary contest featured almost a dozen candidates seeking to become mayor of the biggest US city, where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one.

Voters cast ballots during a smothering heatwave before polls closed at 9:00 pm, but results may take time to finalise.

The contest is ranked-choice, with voters asked to select five candidates in order of preference, and neither Cuomo nor Mamdani claimed the required majority on Tuesday.

If no candidate wins 50 per cent of the vote, election officials begin eliminating lowest-ranking candidates and recounting, a process that can take days.

With the Democrats reeling nationally from Trump’s presidential election last year, the high-profile city race has done little to calm party nerves.

But Mamdani’s upbeat campaign, built with youthful social media savvy and campaign promises to improve the city’s affordability, appears to have resonated with voters.

Cuomo stepped down as New York governor four years ago after multiple women accused him of sexual harassment. He was also accused of mismanaging the state’s response to the Covid pandemic.

Staunchly pro-Israel Cuomo led in polls for most of the race, with massive name recognition as the son of another New York governor, as well as support from powerful centrist figures including former president Bill Clinton.

Mamdani, meanwhile, is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America – the kind of niche, leftist affiliation that might work in the Big Apple but many analysts warn against.

The fact that Mamdani speaks out for Palestinians and has accused Israel of “genocide” also makes him a prime target for Trump.

His supporters include two favourite Trump foils – fiery leftist Senator Bernie Sanders and progressive congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who both congratulated Mamdani on Tuesday.

“Billionaires and lobbyists poured millions against you and our public finance system. And you won,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X.

Sanders posted on X to say: “You took on the political, economic and media Establishment – and you beat them.”

Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, said Mamdani “is too extreme for a city already on edge.”

He added on X: “This is not the time for radical politics. It is time for real leadership. I have fought for this city my whole life. Not for fame or power but because I believe in the people who live here... Let’s win this on November 4th!”

Voters told AFP they saw the ballot as an opportunity to guide party politics.

“I see it as a referendum of the Democratic Party, whether we lean more towards the centrist candidate, who’s maybe from a different generation of politicians and people in society, or a younger, left-leaning, more ambitious, idealistic party,” voter Nicholas Zantal, 31, said.

Big ideas, low experience

Currently a New York state assemblyman representing the borough of Queens, Mamdani stands out for his energetic campaigning style and eye-catching policy proposals that include freezing rent for many New Yorkers, providing free bus service, and universal childcare.

And in a wildly expensive city, where a three-bedroom apartment can easily cost RM28,000 a month, he has surged from behind.

“Tomorrow is ours if we want it,” Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and is of Indian descent, said late Monday in a social media post. “We are on the cusp of toppling a political dynasty, and delivering a New York everyone can afford.”

Voter Eamon Harkin, 48, said prices were his “number one issue.” “What’s at stake is primarily the affordability of New York,” he said.

But Sheryl Stein, who works in tourism marketing, was sceptical.

“I like youth,” she said. But Mamdani having “no experience and no proven track record to run the largest city in this country and one of the largest in the world, is pretty scary.”

The confirmed winner of the Democratic Party nomination will face several contenders in November – including the current, scandal-plagued mayor, Eric Adams, who is a Democrat but has vowed to run again as an independent. — AFP

Resurgence of Suicide Bombings in Nigeria’s Boko Haram Conflict

June 24, 2025

-----------

On the night of June 21, a woman detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in a crowd of people at a fish market in Konduga town, about 25 km southeast of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in Nigeria. The attack, which reportedly killed at least 12 people, is the first in the region in 2025 after a series of suicide bombings in 2024.

The conflict between Nigerian security forces and Islamist insurgent groups, referred to as Boko Haram, has now entered its 16th year. It has been marked by widespread violence, including suicide bombings, often carried out by women who conceal explosives beneath their hijabs, a traditional covering widely worn by Muslim women in the northern region.

Since Nigeria’s first recorded suicide bombing in 2011, Boko Haram has carried out hundreds of such attacks, many targeting civilian gatherings. In 2017 alone, there were more than 127 suicide bombings and attempted suicide bombings, according to data from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

However, in the years leading up to 2024, incidents of suicide bombings had waned. Some analysts had attributed this decline to military successes and the fragmentation of Boko Haram into rival factions, most notably the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS). ISWAP adopted a different strategy from the original Boko Haram group, favoring targeted attacks against security agencies and military installations rather than civilians. Over time, infighting between the factions significantly weakened both groups, particularly JAS, whose leader, Abubakar Shekau, died in 2021.

President Bola Tinubu, in a statement posted on X, said the suicide bomb attack was an attempt to spread fear and directed the security forces to “rout the remnants of Boko Haram.” Over the years the Nigerian military has repeatedly claimed to have defeated Boko Haram despite ongoing attacks against civilians and military targets.

While no group has claimed responsibility, the latest suicide bombing and others since 2024 raise concerns for the safety of people in the region, particularly amid reports of a resurgence of the JAS faction, which has often carried out brutal attacks targeting civilians.

Insurgent groups should end all targeted and indiscriminate attacks against civilians. Nigerian authorities should take decisive action to hold those responsible for these abuses to account.

-----------

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Iran executed three more prisoners Wednesday over allegedly spying for Israel, its state-run IRNA news agency reported, the latest hangings connected to its war with Israel.

The hangings happened in Urmia Prison in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, which is the country’s most northwest province.

IRNA cited Iran’s judiciary for the news, saying the men had been accused of bringing “assassination equipment” into the country.

Iran has carried out several hangings during its war with Israel, sparking fears from activists that it could conduct a wave of executions after the conflict ended.

Iran identified the three men executed as Azad Shojaei, Edris Aali and Iraqi national Rasoul Ahmad Rasoul. Amnesty International had previously raised concerns that the men could be executed.

Wednesday’s execution bring the total number of hangings for espionage around the war up to six since June 16. Activists fear more people will be executed, particularly after Iran’s theocracy issued a Sunday deadline for people to turn themselves in over spying.

In Israel, at least 28 people have been killed and more than 1,000 wounded in the war. Hundreds have died throughout the war in Iran, according to both the government — which has provided sporadic casualty figures throughout the war — and the Washington-based group Human Rights Activists.

Iran’s government on Tuesday put the death toll at 606 people killed, with 5,332 others being injured. Human Rights Activists released figures Wednesday showing Israeli strikes on Iran have killed at least 1,054 people and wounded 4,476 others.

The group, which has provided detailed casualty figures from multiple rounds of unrest in Iran, said of those killed, it identified 417 civilians and 318 security force personnel.

People in Iran, meanwhile, began trying to return to their normal lives as a shaky ceasefire with Israel, negotiated by President Donald Trump, appeared to be holding.

State media described heavy traffic around the Caspian Sea area and other rural areas outside of the capital, Tehran, as people began returning to the city.

Tehran experienced intense Israeli airstrikes throughout the war, including those that targeted Iran’s top military leadership and other sites associated with its ruling theocracy.

International Sufi Caravan Chief Strongly Condemns OIC's Anti-India Stance

Jun 24, 2025

MUMBAI: Reacting sharply to the statements made against India during the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) meeting held in Türkiye on 22 June, Mufti Manzur Ziyaee, President of the International Sufi Caravan and Patron of the All India Ilm-o-Hunar Foundation, has strongly condemned the remarks and questioned the OIC’s biased approach.

“Once again, OIC has proven its pro-Pakistan bias by taking an unfounded and one-sided stance against India. We condemn this in the strongest terms,” Mufti Ziyaee stated.

He said that the OIC continues to echo Pakistan’s narrative while completely ignoring the reality of over 250 million Indian Muslims who enjoy complete religious freedom and constitutional protection in a democratic, secular country like India.

“India is a peaceful, secular and democratic nation where Muslims live with full freedom and dignity, and play an active role in political, educational, and social sectors,” he added.

Turning his criticism towards Pakistan, Mufti Ziyaee remarked: “Pakistan has long been a hub of terrorism, sectarian violence and systemic oppression of minorities. If the OIC is truly concerned about the welfare of the Muslim Ummah, it should focus on the internal oppression in Pakistan, the crisis in Afghanistan, and the ongoing wars in the Middle East — not target a peace-loving nation like India.”

He further added: “We strongly condemn the OIC’s persistent partiality against India and reiterate that Indian Muslims consider themselves safe, respected, and entitled to full constitutional rights.”

Mufti Ziyaee appealed to the global Muslim leadership: "OIC must restore its neutrality and refrain from targeting India under the influence of any specific geopolitical agenda."

Muslim Auto Driver Assaulted Allegedly For Refusing To Shout ‘Jai Shri Ram’ In Bengaluru

Scroll Staff

Jun 25, 2025

A 35-year-old Muslim auto rickshaw driver was assaulted by eight men for allegedly refusing to shout “Jai Shri Ram” in Bengaluru on Sunday, The Hindu reported.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sajeeth VJ told The Indian Express that the complaint filed by the auto driver, Waseem Ahmed, did not mention any “slogan-related provocation”.

However, Ahmed told The Hindu that the assault took place after he refused to shout the slogan and that he had also mentioned this to the police in his statement.

On Sunday, Ahmed and his friend Sameer were driving in his auto rickshaw. They stopped at a vacant site in Hegde Nagar after which the group of men sitting nearby confronted them, demanding to know their identities.

“While I was trying to reason with them, they realised I was a Muslim and started attacking me,” Ahmed told The Hindu.

Ahmed alleged that the men demanded that he shout “Jai Shri Ram”, and when he refused, they allegedly “got furious and started to punch and kick” him. Sameer had fled by then.

Ahmed said that one of the attackers “showed some mercy” and helped him escape.

Ahmed filed a complaint at the Sampigehalli police station. The police sent him to hospital for a medical examination, The Hindu reported.

A case was filed against the suspects for intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, criminal intimidation, assault and wrongful restraint.

According to a medico-legal case filed at the hospital, the assault left Ahmed with significant injuries, including potential internal damage and reduced hearing in his right ear, The Indian Express reported.

The police are trying to ascertain the motive behind the attack, the newspaper reported.

As part of the investigation, the police have recorded statements of witnesses, including a watchman from a nearby establishment.

The witnesses did not observe the suspects as having forced Ahmed to shout anything, The Indian Express quoted an unidentified police officer as saying.

Important that no locals were involved in Pahalgam terror attack, Omar says

BASHAARAT MASOOD

Jun 24, 2025

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said it is “important” that no locals were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people and led to the escalation of hostilities between India and Pakistan.

His comments come days after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two Kashmiri locals for allegedly harbouring the terrorists, and concluded based on their questioning that all three attackers were from Pakistan. “They (the arrested men) have disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba,” an NIA spokesperson had said.

“The important thing is that there was no local involvement in this (Pahalgam attack),” Omar said while talking to the reporters in Gulmarg on Tuesday. “Those who fired, those who killed 26 people, they were all from outside.”

“Two people have been arrested by the NIA for helping them (the attackers), and perhaps the NIA has said that they were coerced to help,” the chief minister said. “They gave them food, etc. They were forced. Let’s allow the NIA investigation to carry on, and then they will file a chargesheet into it.”

Omar also addressed reports that there could be a delay in the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, and that it would happen after the present government completes its term.

Chennai Hosts Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin For This Year's Moharram Sermons; 43,000 Bohras Attend; First Ashara Gathering In The City After 50 Years

Jun 24, 2025

MUMBAI: The 53rd leader of the worldwide Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, is in Chennai to address this year’s Ashara Mubaraka congregation during Moharram.

Around 43,000 Dawoodi Bohras from across the globe are attending the Ashara Mubaraka congregation, held between the 2nd and 10th of Moharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is a time dedicated to commemorating the Prophet Muhammad, his grandson Imam Husain, and his family. Imam Husain, along with his companions and close relatives, was martyred on Ashura (10th Moharram) at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, in present-day Iraq.

For Dawoodi Bohras, attending the Muharram congregation is a spiritual and educational journey, helping with personal growth and development.

Under the guidance of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the community uses these sermons to strengthen their faith, drawing inspiration from the Holy Quran and the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad and his family.

“We consider ourselves extremely fortunate and are elated that His Holiness has graciously accepted our invitation to conduct this year’s Ashara Mubaraka congregation in our city,” said Aliasger Shakir, Community Outreach Coordinator in Chennai.

Known as the cultural capital of South India, Chennai has a long tradition of inclusivity, diversity, and harmony. “We’re confident that this hospitable nature of our city will provide a warm and spiritual environment for all attendees,” he added.

Besides the main venue at Moore Street, the programme will be broadcast to nine other centres across the city.

“As we prepare to welcome thousands of guests, we are working closely with civic authorities and government officials to ensure the event is held smoothly, safely, and with a shared commitment to cleanliness, order, and civic responsibility,” Shakir said.

Various committees have been formed to handle accommodation, transport, food, seating arrangements, and other facilities so that guests from different parts of the world can take part fully and comfortably.

“We are extremely grateful to the government and local authorities for their continued support and cooperation in making this historic event memorable and fulfilling for all attendees,” Shakir added.

The last time Chennai hosted the Ashara Mubaraka congregation was in 1975, when Syedna Saifuddin’s revered father and the 52nd leader of the community, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, chose the city for the commemoration. Older members of the community still remember that event fondly as a time of transformation for the Dawoodi Bohras in Chennai.

“Fifty years is a lifetime, yet the memories of Syedna Burhanuddin’s visit are fresh,” said Ibrahim Haji, a senior community member. “His presence brought immense growth and prosperity. Now, with Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin gracing us with his presence, we look forward to his guidance and counsel on all aspects of life.”

From the first Bohra family that settled on Moore Street, George Town, in 1790, the community has grown to over 8,000 members spread across different parts of Chennai. Known for their hard work and enterprising spirit, many members run successful small, medium, and large-scale businesses, actively contributing to the city’s economy.

The Bohras of Chennai are also involved in various social welfare initiatives, including efforts for education, senior citizens, healthcare, and environmental conservation. One notable project is the ‘Zero Hunger Squad’, a weekly initiative aimed at reducing hunger and malnutrition among underprivileged communities in Chennai.

Apart from Chennai, Dawoodi Bohras have also settled in Coimbatore, Salem, Pondicherry, and Erode.

Supreme Court rejects Operation Sindoor spin by soldier on wife's murder

25.06.25

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the defence of a soldier accused of dowry murder that he has been a Black Cat commando for 20 years and had taken part in Operation Sindoor, saying it “does not give him immunity from committing atrocity at home”.

The court directed Baljinder Singh, who claimed he is part of the NSG, to surrender within two weeks.

A bench of Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, however, admitted the special leave petition filed by Singh challenging the concurrent findings of an Amritsar trial court and Punjab and Haryana High Court holding him guilty of the murder of his wife.

Singh was earlier convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in 2004 by a sessions court for strangling his wife two years into their marriage. His appeal against the conviction and sentence was recently dismissed by the high court, which asked him to surrender immediately and serve the sentence.

Sensing that the Supreme Court bench was not inclined to interfere with the high court order during Tuesday’s hearing, Singh’s lawyer sought to sway the judges by pointing out that his client has been a Black Cat commando for two decades and had participated in Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.

“I had participated in Operation Sindoor, and for the last 20 years I have been a Black Cat commando,” the counsel said, prompting Justice Bhuyan, heading the bench, to retort: “But that does not give you any immunity from committing atrocity at home.”

The judge added: “That only shows how physically fit you are and how you alone could have killed your wife.”

The court made the oral observations while referring to the findings recorded by the sessions court and the high court while sentencing him.

The bench issued a formal notice to the state of Punjab on Singh’s appeal and posted the matter for further hearing to July 29.

Although the lawyer appearing for Singh claimed that the convict was a Black Cat commando, there is no independent source to authenticate this. The NSG appoints commandos only after a rigorous background check and keeps constant updates on their antecedents.

It is unclear how Singh could have continued to be an NSG commando after his 2004 conviction. The NSG provides round-the-clock security to VVIPs, including the Prime Minister, and also participates in critical combat operations.

Further, in terms of Central Civil Service rules, a civil servant kept in custody for more than 48 hours automatically gets suspended.

Coimbatore Islamic Federation alleges NIA framed individuals in car blast case

June 24, 2025

The Coimbatore District Federation of All Jamaaths and allied Islamic organisations have condemned the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for arresting four individuals, alleging that they have been framed in connection with the Tamil Nadu ISIS radicalisation and recruitment case, an offshoot of the 2022 Coimbatore car blast.

NIA arrests four more in Tamil Nadu ISIS radicalisation, recruitment case

The federation alleged that the recent arrests made on June 19, 2025 were politically motivated and based on false charges. The four men, Ahmed Ali, Jawahar Sathik, Raja Abdullah alias ‘Mac’ Raja, and Sheik Dawood, were accused by the NIA of being radicalised by Jameel Basha, founder of Madras Arabic College, and of promoting extremist ideologies under the guise of Arabic instruction.

Rejecting these claims, the federation accused the NIA of defaming Arabic colleges and madrasas and misusing investigative powers to intimidate the Muslim community.

On Tuesday, Sultan Amir, a coordinator of the federation, told reporters the agency had pressured individuals to turn approvers and deliberately delayed bail proceedings. He alleged that the NIA was functioning in line with the interests of the BJP and that the recent arrests were part of a broader effort to stamp the Muslim community as hubs of terrorism and to target Arabic colleges operating across Tamil Nadu.

The federation urged the Tamil Nadu government and secular political parties to break their silence and demand accountability. It also announced legal support for those arrested and efforts to raise public awareness about the issue.

Mosque loudspeaker row hots up

ByJyoti Punwani

Jun 25, 2025

MUMBAI: A petition in the Bombay High Court; a meeting of imams in Govandi; and a delegation that tried, unsuccessfully, to meet deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar – these moves over the last two days reflect the disquiet among Mumbai’s Muslims against the police’s ongoing efforts to remove loudspeakers from mosques.

On Monday, five Muslim religious institutions moved court against the manner in which the police have been discharging these duties. The five institutions are all in Parksite, Vikhroli, where former MLA Arif Naseem Khan of the Congress has been active in the matter. They are represented by senior counsel Yusuf Muchhala and A Karim Pathan of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights.

On Tuesday, Samajwadi Party state president Abu Asim Azmi, MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, addressed a gathering of 200 imams and masjid committee members in Govandi, under his assembly constituency. He urged them to demand that the police show them the order that directs them to remove loudspeakers. “If they cannot show you the order, tell them to give instructions in writing,’’ he said.

This is easier said than done, the imams told Hindustan Times. “The police have a fixed modus operandi. They tell masjid committee members that masjids in the adjacent area have voluntarily removed their loudspeakers, and it’s best they do the same, or else they would be sent a notice. That’s enough to pressurise the committee members, many of whom not comfortable arguing with a group of policemen.’’

Imran Qureshi is among the few who did ask the police to show him the order which directed the removal of loudspeakers. “They cited the high court order. But the court has not said that loudspeakers should be removed; it has only said that the volume must be kept low,’’ said Qureshi.

Since the police neither showed him the order, nor gave him written instructions, Qureshi refused to remove the loudspeaker from the mosque, where he is a committee member.

On Monday, the Govandi Citizens Welfare Forum also sent emails to the police and Chief Minister’s Office, protesting the removal of loudspeakers “without notice, explanation or due process, in violation of our fundamental rights”. Pointing out that there was no ban on azaan through loudspeakers, and also that other places of worship continued to use loudspeakers, the forum requested that top-rung police officers call a meeting of community representatives to resolve the issue.

In Govandi, Maulana Abdur Rehman Ziyahee claimed BJP leader and former MLA Kirit Somaiya has been collaborating with the police in the removal of loudspeakers. Somaiya also tweeted on Sunday that the police in Bhandup, Chembur and Govandi had told him that all loudspeakers from masjids in their respective areas had been removed.

Interestingly, Azmi said he would not raise the matter in the upcoming monsoon session of the legislature because “every time I raise an issue that concerns Muslim rights, the BJP manages to polarise the atmosphere.’’

Iran-Israel Ceasefire Helps Diplomacy Negate Conflict And Reach Peace

June 25, 2025

After 12 days of murder and devastation, a ceasefire brokered by the U.S. has reportedly been agreed by both the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Israeli regime early on Tuesday. However, the regime falsely accused the Islamic Republic of violating the truce by launching missile attacks on parts of Tel Aviv and its vicinities.

According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire to end the “12-day war,” with the truce taking effect in stages over 24 hours. However, the Iranian side said no ceasefire agreement has so far been reached between the two sides and that the Islamic Republic will respond to the regime if it did not stop strikes for the next few hours.

Amid war between the two countries, the Islamic Republic threatened to continue the war with the Zionist regime and anyone supporting it with arms and ammunition.

Actually, the war was imposed on the Islamic Republic by the Zionists and the regime was the starter of the strikes on the Iranian nation. The regime and its supporters were not aware of the strong military power of the Islamic Republic of Iran and blindly and illegally launched rockets on the nation, martyring a number of military officers, scientists, and innocent people.

The regime not only attacked Iran itself but also provoked the U.S. to attack the Islamic Republic, something that happened despite the Americans ‘ actions against all international norms.

The attacks by the Israeli regime and the U.S. on the Islamic Republic received widespread condemnation, particularly from the Islamic countries and organisations. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly denounced the attacks by both the Zionist regime and the U.S. and called them a violation of the country’s territorial integrity.

The Islamic Republic’s decisive retaliatory response to the regime targeting its military and nuclear facilities was a historic lesson to the invading Zionists and their supporters.

The regime ultimately begged the U.S. to mediate and to ask the Islamic Republic to agree on a ceasefire to end the war.

Anyway, war is devastating for both sides, whether the invaders or the defenders.

The two sides have no option but to bend to the ceasefire to save their nations, and in turn, the Zionist regime should have understood that it killed thousands of innocents, children and women in Gaza and devastated their lands, but failed to defeat the Islamic nation’s faith and belief and their patriotism. Too, in the Islamic Republic of Iran or any other Islamic countries, it will not reach its target even if it manages to kill them or devastate their territory.

So, dialogue and reaching peace through diplomatic channels is the only way to reach a lasting peace and security and avoid regional instability. The U.S. should stay firm in its ceasefire plan between the two sides and impose pressure on the Israeli regime to respect the truce and remain committed to peace and security of the entire region, including the devastated Gaza strip.

Govt to amend CrPC to protect rights during arrest

Jun 25, 2025

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul yesterday said the government has prepared a draft amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1898, aiming to ensure stronger safeguarding measures during arrests and interrogations.

"We have drafted an amendment to the CrPC to ensure a rights-based approach and strict safeguarding measures during arrest and interrogation. It'll be cleared very soon," he said while addressing a workshop in the capital.

The Commonwealth Secretariat in partnership with youth and sports ministry and foreign ministry organised the 2-day workshop titled "Commonwealth Charter Youth Workshop Bangladesh-2025".

The law adviser said his ministry has undertaken a bold reform drive aligned with the Commonwealth Charter's core values.

Citing some reform examples, he also said the government has amended the code of civil procedure to make justice faster, cheaper, and more accessible.

Asif said Bangladesh is digitalising the judiciary to ensure transparency and efficiency.

"We have started the process and wish to digitalise [the judiciary] in the next six months," he said.

He also said the government amended laws on gender-based violence for timely justice and introduced digital marriage and divorce registration, ensuring gender equality.

Commonwealth Assistant Secretary-General Prof Luis Franceschi urged the participants to turn Commonwealth values into action in everyday life.

"The future of Bangladesh depends on the choices you make today. You may not be guaranteed success, but failure is guaranteed if you give up. So, don't give up," he said.

Franceschi is leading a Commonwealth delegation in Dhaka to engage with the interim government of Bangladesh.

Youths from diverse backgrounds, including media, civil society, minority groups and academia, joined the event.

State counsel for Hasina removed over facebook post

Jun 25, 2025

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today removed Advocate Md Aminul Gani alias Titto as defence counsel for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a contempt of court case filed against her.

The tribunal's decision came amid criticism over Aminul's appointment, following the resurfacing of a Facebook post he made on August 5 last year in which he called for Hasina's execution.

The post read,"Want death by hanging of the destroyer of the spirit of the Liberation War, killer and liar Sheikh Hasina."

The tribunal also deferred today's scheduled hearing to July 2. Supreme Court lawyer AY Masihuzzaman, who was appointed as amicus curiae in the case, informed the court that he had received the documents related to the case yesterday and required more time to prepare.

Following this, Aminul stood before the court and expressed his willingness to continue defending Hasina, saying, "Professionally, I am impartial and would defend my client."

Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, the chair of the three-member tribunal, said, "In the meantime, we have received some adverse information. Do you want to continue?"

Referring to the Facebook post, the judge added, "Once upon a time, you uttered an adverse comment on social media about the accused. So, concern arises whether you will impartially defend her."

In response, Aminul argued, "The tribunal engaged me. I am honest as a lawyer with 36 years of experience. I need an opportunity to prove that."

However, the tribunal chairman said, "On the point of morality, you should not stand for the accused. We know about you. We will need you again," effectively ending his appointment.

The controversy erupted after Aminul's appointment on June 19 as the state defence counsel for both Hasina and former Gobindaganj upazila parishad chairman Shakil Akanda Bulbul.

His past social media comments triggered backlash and raised questions about impartiality in the highly sensitive case.

The contempt petition stemmed from a leaked phone call that circulated on social media last year and was widely reported by mainstream media.

In the recording, Hasina is allegedly heard saying, "I have had 227 cases filed against me, so I have received a licence to kill 227 people."

The tribunal considered the remark contemptuous and, on April 30, filed a petition with ICT-1 seeking contempt proceedings against her.

Rah-e-Farda resumes broadcasts after two-month suspension

By Fidel Rahmati

June 24, 2025

Ruh-e-Farda resumed its broadcasts after a two-month break, now accessible in Kabul via antennas and globally through satellite.

Radio and Television “Rah-e-Farda” has resumed its broadcasts after a two-month hiatus. The station made this announcement on Tuesday, June 24, via a statement on its social media platform facebook.

According to the statement, “Rah-e-Farda” is now accessible in Kabul via regular antennas and globally through the Turkmen Alam satellite, ensuring widespread availability for its viewers.

The station expressed gratitude to its viewers for their continued support and pledged to reflect the voice of the people more powerfully than before with a renewed approach to its programming.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Information and Culture under the Taliban temporarily suspended the station’s activities in April, following complaints from its staff about unpaid wages.

The Ministry of Information and Culture stated that “Ruh-e-Farda” had faced multiple complaints from its employees and journalists regarding the non-payment of their salaries, which led to the suspension.

The suspension of the station was just one example of the growing challenges faced by media outlets in Afghanistan since the Taliban took control. Economic struggles, along with increased restrictions on media freedom, have worsened the situation for many.

Despite these challenges, “Ruh-e-Farda” has resumed broadcasting, signaling resilience and a commitment to providing independent media coverage during a period of heightened censorship and adversity.

Speech by IEA-Foreign Minister at 51st OIC Ministerial Meeting in Istanbul

June 24, 2025

Excellency Hussein Ibrahim Taha, Honorable Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation,

Honorable Brother Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, Distinguished Ministers and Representatives of Member and Observer States, Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatullah,

Excellencies, We are gathered at a time when the world, particularly our region, is undergoing profound shifts and transformations that require timely and responsible attention.

Like myself, statements by all speakers would be focused on the tragedy of Gaza and other global Issues, but the Israeli attack on Iran last week has forced me to open my remarks with this issue. Even before the Gaza tragedy could come to an end, a new crisis has erupted in our region: Israel’s aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran!

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly condemns the recent attacks by Israel on the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the killing of Iranian military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. These actions are blatant violations of fundamental principles of international law, particularly the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Our region has been exhausted by imposed wars. It simply cannot withstand another crisis or conflict.

Excellencies,

The global order is moving from a unipolar system toward a new structure, wherein globalization is facing reactions and regional and cultural identities are gaining prominence. While this transition undoubtedly presents challenges, its opportunities must not be overlooked.

As the Islamic world, we now have a vital opportunity to unite around our shared Islamic values and heritage.

The Islamic world is presently confronting emerging challenges that are significantly hindering our path to advancement and reconstruction.

These challenges range from political and economic issues to identity crises, which have driven many of our youth into a troubling state of despair.

It is now imperative for the Islamic world to thoroughly examine the underlying causes of this stagnation and to formulate a common identity for future generations that emulates not foreign models, but draws proudly from our rich Islamic history and civilization.

Excellencies,

Our gathering takes place at a time when brutal atrocities and the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people by the occupying regime are intensifying across Palestine, especially in Gaza. This situation serves as a historic test for the global order, human values, and legal mechanisms, which have largely failed. Beyond this failure, the current illegitimate occupation poses a grave threat not only to the Islamic world but to global peace and security as a whole. It must never be underestimated.

I call on the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to bring an end Israeli regime’s atrocities in Palestine and Iran. Failure to do so would pose a direct threat to the security of all countries in the region and lead to devastating consequences.

The Israeli occupying regime, in clear violation of all international laws and humanitarian principles, is waging a ruthless war aimed at exterminating an oppressed nation and erasing thousands of years of history. The continuation of such a situation is not only a major humanitarian tragedy seeking the elimination of the Palestinian people, but also a serious threat to global peace and stability in the 21st century. Taking urgent and practical steps against this threat is an inescapable obligation of the collective human conscience.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The political, economic, and civilizational realities of the Islamic world provide us the opportunity to assume a role not merely as observers, but to play an impactful and trailblazing role in the new international order in line with Islamic principles. This gathering should serve not only as a venue for documenting challenges but as a starting point for laying down action plans, unified positions, and innovative solutions. If Islamic countries have resolute political will, adopt Islamic brotherhood, collaboration, and cooperation as a foundation, they will not only uphold the dignity of their nations but also influence global decision-making.

Excellencies,

Afghanistan, after decades of conflict, occupation, and foreign interferences, has now by the Grace and Favor of Allah Almighty, entered a phase of independence, stability, and reconstruction under the shade of an Islamic system.

Praise be to Allah, Afghanistan is making unprecedented progress in unity, security, institutionalization, economic growth, and the restoration of foreign relations in accordance with Islamic teachings and Sharia principles.

Afghanistan is no longer a country defined by conflict and regression. We stand at the beginning of a new chapter in our history. The one that, after ensuring security, sovereignty, and national unity, opens new opportunities for progress, cooperation, and regional connectivity according to Islamic principles. We seek to define this opportunity with Islamic countries through joint economic, cultural, and strategic projects grounded in our shared Islamic faith.

Excellencies,

Afghanistan is currently facing unlawful economic sanctions imposed by certain Western nations. Allow me to highlight that after two decades of war in Afghanistan, the United States has frozen the national assets of the Afghan people, which has created challenges for Afghanistan’s organic economic growth.

Once again, I call upon the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and its member states to ensure the unconditional and immediate release of Afghanistan’s frozen central bank reserves. On the basis of Islamic and human responsibility, I urge you to use your full influence to advocate for the removal of the economic and political restrictions placed on the Islamic Emirate. Distinguished Representatives,

As a free country committed to religious values, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has based its foreign relations on the principles of mutual respect and balanced engagement and seeks to open a new chapter of interaction grounded in mutual cooperation, dignity, and positivity. On behalf of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, I propose that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in line with its responsibilities, to support the reconstruction and economic development of those member states that have now entered a phase of stability.

Afghanistan is one of them, located at the heart of Asia, and stands ready to serve as a vital gateway for transit, trade, and economic connectivity among Islamic nations.

We are prepared to play a constructive role within the OIC’s strategic economic agenda, particularly in the areas of regional connectivity, energy, logistics, and investment.

In the end, I once again emphasize the need for urgent, serious, and practical measures to end the heart-rending crisis in Palestine and Israel’s attacks against Iran, especially the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and the commencement of reconstruction efforts.

Georgian Friday Prayer Imams Praise Iran’s Strength, Resistance Against Israel

June 24, 2025

He emphasized that the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei often says, "We are oppressed, but not weak." Currently, the world witnesses a battle between two fronts: on one side, Jews; on the other, Muslims, the Union of Islamic Radio and Television Networks reported on Monday.

He reflected on past periods when the Islamic community, especially Shia communities, lacked strong leadership, prompting questions about the origins and legitimacy of Shia Islam. However, he noted that today, the strongest Muslim nation is led by Shia Muslims—an embodiment of the path of the Prophet (PBUH), Imam Ali (AS), and Imam Hossein (AS).

"We take pride in a Muslim country standing up to a Jewish aggressor, defeating it and restoring dignity to Muslims. By God, Ayatollah Khamenei is our pride and honor. Who can you find that dares to confront Israel? May God increase Iran’s glory," he continued.

He further stated: "No reward is given solely for being Persian or Arab; rewards are for the righteous. Today, nationalism and ethnic pride are condemned. We pray for the honor of Islam. Regardless of where this power resides, we pray for it. Ayatollah Khamenei, whom God preserve, spoke twice this week, emphasizing that the era of complacency is over," he added.

He stressed that the Zionist regime must be held accountable. "Our duty in this situation is, at the very least, to pray for them and to oppose the coalition of disbelief. Resistance occurs in two ways: directly on the battlefield and through social media and cyberspace. Today, the importance of fighting in the digital realm must not be underestimated. We see fires being set in tires, falsely attributed to Israeli attacks."

"Our minimum duty is to be active online. The coalition of disbelief is fully engaged, and the world is watching this battle. I also want to note that the Arab community today speaks with pride about Ayatollah Khamenei—it's as if Iran's attack on the regime ignites a fire in the hearts of Arab communities. They see that Iran is taking revenge for Gaza. The scenes we witnessed in Gaza are being replayed in the occupied territories. May the esteemed Leader be granted a long and honorable life. May God eliminate and destroy the enemies."

Additionally, Hojjatoleslam Haji Hajiov, Friday Prayer Imam of the Imam Ali Mosque in Georgian city of Marneuli, stated that the Zionist regime’s aggression against Iran is a blatant violation of the sovereignty and independence of Islamic nations.

He emphasized that the fact that the Iranian people, led by Ayatollah Khamenei, stand alone against the coalition of disbelief demonstrates the strength and greatness of the Islamic Ummah.

CAIR Sues Meta for Firing Muslim Employee Over Pro-Palestine, Anti-Genocide Advocacy

June 24, 2025

The Legal Defense Fund of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, filed a lawsuit today against Meta for discriminatory treatment and termination of behalf of Mohammed Feras Majeed over pro-Palestine, anti-genocide advocacy.

CAIR’s lawsuit, filed In the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas Austin Division, alleges that Meta violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Chapter 21 of the Texas Labor Code.

It states in part:

“Meta discriminated against Plaintiff based on his religious identity as a Muslim by forcing him to choose between expressing his sincerely held religious belief and maintaining his employment. Meta silenced Plaintiff’s expressions of religious solidarity with the Muslim community during the ongoing genocide in Gaza—a subject central to Plaintiff’s faith—while permitting similarly situated non-Muslim employees to speak freely about other humanitarian and political crises.”

The lawsuit seeks an injunction prohibiting further religious discrimination by Meta, removal of negative references from the plaintiff’s personnel record, annual religious sensitivity training for Meta management, and compensatory and punitive damages.

Mohammed Feras Majeed, who is of Indian origin, was hired at Meta in 2018. As a Muslim, he felt it was part of his religious duty to speak up about Palestine within the workplace and on his social media pages. Within workplace chat platforms, Majeed had seen discussions of political topics such as Ukraine and the Black Lives Matter movement, along with sympathy for the Israeli victims after October 7, 2023.

However, when Majeed attempted to discuss Palestine and his prayers for Muslims impacted by Israel’s genocide, he suffered adverse employment action in response, including formal reprimands, content removal, verbal warnings, and threats of further discipline, all stemming from his religiously motivated expression.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

Trump takes victory lap but pitfalls remain

June 25, 2025

Anthony Zurcher

Aboard Air Force One en route to the Nato summit in the Netherlands, Trump shared a personal text message from a somewhat unlikely source.

It was sent by Nato boss Mark Rutte who praised the American president for what he had accomplished in using US bombers to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.

"Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, " wrote Rutte in a message the president posted to his Truth Social account. "That was truly extraordinary and something no one else dared to do."

Trump has had his differences with Nato in the past, as he's called into doubt the alliance's mutual defence agreement and the military contributions made by other member nations.

Rutte addressed that, as well, telling Trump he was "flying into another big success" at the Nato summit, where member nations had agreed to Trump's demand to boost defence spending to 5% of their gross domestic product.

"It will be your win," he concluded.

The warm words, and the president's eagerness to share them to the world, illustrated just how much the diplomatic equation in the Middle East and among US allies has changed for Trump.

Last week he left the G7 summit in Canada a day early, as conflict raged between Israel and Iran and it appeared increasingly likely the US would join the fight.

The Americans attacked Iran's nuclear facilities on Saturday night, but by Tuesday morning the president departed Washington for another international trip, this time with a fragile ceasefire established between the two warring parties.

Rutte's text – which a Nato press officer confirmed to the BBC as authentic – dovetails with the accounts provided on and off the record by White House officials.

Trump' military strike removed the threat of Iranian nuclear weapons. His actions triggered the ceasefire and ended what he calls the "12 Day War".

His involvement and his pressure – including an angry outburst directed at both sides on Tuesday morning and what the White House called an "exceptionally firm and direct" phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from Air Force One – ensured that the ceasefire would hold.

Last week, America's allies were anxious. Now, it appears Trump is heading to Europe with the intention of basking in their praise.

The outlook, however, is more complicated than that.

While the administration touts that the US bombing raid "obliterated" Iran's nuclear research facilities, US military intelligence officials have told American media that the damage is not as severe as the White House has claimed.

The country's nuclear programme has probably only been set back by months, according to a preliminary Pentagon intelligence assessment. And the Islamic Republic's stockpile of enriched uranium was not eliminated in the bombings, sources familiar with the report told CBS News.

The White House says the assessment is "flat-out wrong" and is "a clear attempt to demean" President Trump.

Questions remain about the quantity and location of Iran's enriched uranium supply – a key component of a nuclear weapon. There are also reports of the existence of an undisclosed and undamaged research facility elsewhere in Iran.

While the ceasefire is holding for now, Middle East truces are notoriously tenuous. Iran's leadership has been weakened through two weeks of devastating Israeli attacks and the nation's future is uncertain.

One need only look at the long bloody civil war in Syria to see the risks presented when an authoritarian government loses its grip on power. Trump has talked of "love, peace and prosperity" for Iran, but chaos, and regional turmoil, are still a realistic possibility.

And although Trump appears to have stopped the two-week Israel-Iran fighting, the wars that Trump inherited and promised to end, in Gaza and Ukraine, rage on.

For this White house, however, those appear to be concerns for another day.

At the moment, the dire warnings of Trump's domestic critics, particularly within his own party, have proven unfounded. Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who had planned to introduce legislation curtailing Trump's use of military force in Iran, has announced he is abandoning that effort for now.

That has given Trump the political space to herald what his administration is trumpeting as an unqualified success.

Since Trump picked him as his vice-presidential running mate, JD Vance has often sought to add ideological substance to Trump's America First politics.

On Tuesday morning, the vice-president took to Truth Social to offer his take on what he said were the three parts of Trump's "foreign policy doctrine".

"1) clearly define an American interest; 2) negotiate aggressively to achieve that interest; 3) use overwhelming force if necessary," he wrote.

As doctrines go, however, that's not much to work with.

Often, the president's foreign policy seems reactive and contradictory, more tactical than strategic - whether it's applying and removing tariffs or negotiating with allies and adversaries.

In the past two weeks, Trump has swung between distancing the US from Israel's attacks on Iran to becoming an active participant in them; from calling for Iran's "unconditional surrender" to negotiating a ceasefire with unclear terms; from entertaining the idea of regime change to downplaying it.

It makes for a rollercoaster ride, with the prospect of a catastrophic derailment seemingly around every bend.

But results, as they say, speak for themselves. And this week, Trump's tumultuous ride has ended in a victory lap.

Trump shares fawning private letter from NATO chief

24 Jun, 2025

US President Donald Trump has posted screenshots of a private text message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in which he showered the American leader with praise for “decisive action in Iran.”

The message, which Trump shared on his Truth Social platform, appears to have been sent ahead of the two-day NATO summit in The Hague, which started on Tuesday.

“Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary, and something no one else dared to do. It makes us all safer,” Rutte wrote, aparently referring to the US strikes on nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic sites which took place on June 22.

In his message, Rutte also promised “another big success” for Trump in The Hague, saying that all NATO members had agreed to spend 5% of their GDP on defense. “You will achieve something NO American president in decades could get done,” he wrote.

A NATO spokesperson has confirmed to the BBC that the text is authentic.

Trump has long insisted that NATO members in Europe should significantly increase their military budgets, which many have pledged to do in recent years, citing the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

Spain has reportedly decided to opt out of the 5% spending target, after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez rejected the idea as “not only unreasonable but also counterproductive.” Madrid is currently below the existing 2% spending threshold, with only about 1.3% of its GDP allocated for the military.

Rutte, however, told journalists on Monday that NATO rules don’t allow such exemptions.

Trump says he wants to see ‘deal with Russia’

24 Jun, 2025

US President Donald Trump says he would like to see an agreement with Russia that would put an end to the hostilities in Ukraine.

He made the remarks on Tuesday morning speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to the NATO Summit in The Hague.

Asked how he would react if the summit’s final declaration includes language condemning Russia, Trump said: “I’ll have to take a look at it. But, you know, I’d like to see a deal with Russia.”

Trump also brought up a phone call he’d recently had with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Putin offered to facilitate negotiations with Iran. Trump said he didn’t need help on that front but emphasized that he was focused on reaching a deal with Moscow to end the Ukraine conflict.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has sought to restore ties with Russia that had been largely severed under his predecessor, Joe Biden. Moscow has welcomed the shift and expressed willingness to normalize relations.

Trump’s diplomatic push helped reboot direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which Kiev abandoned back in 2022, reportedly at the behest of its Western backers. Two new rounds of talks kicked off in Türkiye last month.

As a result, the two sides have conducted a series of prisoner exchanges based on an agreement that Moscow and Kiev reached during the second round of direct talks on June 2. Humanitarian exchanges carried out since those negotiations have also included repatriation of the remains of slain soldiers. Russia has returned the remains of over 6,000 Ukrainian troops and received 59 in return. The sides also exchanged draft memorandums outlining their respective visions of a roadmap toward a peace deal.

Despite the talks, Kiev has ramped up attacks on Russian territory, including drone strikes on airbases, while recent acts of railway sabotage in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk Regions have claimed the lives of seven people and left scores injured. Moscow has accused Kiev of attempting to undermine negotiations.

Trump has voiced frustration with both sides, warning that Washington could impose sanctions on both Russia and Ukraine if the conflict does not come to an end. He has thus far resisted pressure from European leaders to impose new punitive measures on Moscow, saying that levying new restrictions could jeopardize peace talks.

Moscow has repeatedly said it is open to talks “without preconditions.” Putin told the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) last week that any lasting solution must include recognition of the situation “on the ground” and Ukrainian neutrality.

The sides remain in contact over a potential third round of negotiations, according to the Russian leader.

At least 120 children abducted by Al Shabab in northern Mozambique, HRW says

June 24, 2025

At least 120 children in northern Mozambique have been kidnapped  by jihadist insurgent group Al Shabab, international NGO Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.

The children are reportedly being used to transport stolen goods, perform forced labour, and in some cases serve as child soldiers or be forced into marriage.

Mozambique has been battling the Islamist insurgency in Cabo Delgado province since 2017. Government forces have struggled to contain the violence, relying on support from troops sent by Rwanda, South Africa, and other regional partners.

In 2020, the insurgents carried out a wave of attacks in which they beheaded dozens of people, including children.

Witnesses have said that children abducted from towns and villages have been used as fighters in subsequent attacks.

The violence has displaced more than 600,000 people and spilled into neighboring provinces, according to the United Nations.

'Neglected crisis'

Human Rights Watch says there has been a resurgence of attacks and child kidnappings in the last two months and called on Mozambique's government to do more to find the children and prevent further abductions.

The problems in Cabo Delgado were largely overshadowed by Mozambique's deadly and long-running post-election protests last year. Cabo Delgado has also been battered by several recent cyclones and hurt by US President Donald Trump's cuts to foreign aid.

The Norwegian Refugee Council's Secretary General, Jan Egeland, visited Cabo Delgado this month and described the situation in northern Mozambique as a neglected crisis.

“Climate shocks, increasing violence and spiralling hunger are having a terrible impact on the population,” Egeland said.

Islamic State Group Attacks Bring ‘New Reality’ to Mozambique Reserve

June 24, 2025

At more than 42,000 square kilometers, Niassa Special Reserve is the largest protected area in Mozambique and holds the most wildlife of anywhere in the country. In an area bigger than Switzerland, elephants, buffalo, wild dogs and one of the world’s seven largest lion populations roam freely.

There are other dangerous predators. The Islamic State group in Mozambique (ISM), most active in neighboring Cabo Delgado province, has been known to retreat to the huge forested park.

A recent spate of attacks in which ISM fighters killed at least 10 people has shaken to the core those who live and work in the reserve. Colleen Begg, managing director of the Niassa Carnivore Project (NCP) whose headquarters in the reserve was attacked on April 29, said her staff and other locals are finding it difficult to return to normal daily life.

“The worst thing about these kind of attacks, which is kind of the point, is the fear factor,” she told British newspaper The Guardian. “The attacks are brutal: the two carpenters that were killed at the safari camp were beheaded. There is enormous fear from communities from the brutality of the attack.”

Nearly 2,100 people fled into the bush after an attack on Mbamba, a village in the reserve where women reportedly witnessed beheadings. According to the NCP, two of its anti-poaching rangers remain missing.

Peter Bofin, a senior analyst with the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project, said it’s still unclear what prompted the attacks, as ISM had not been active in Niassa since 2021.

“It’s been shown that there has been recruitment in Niassa province in the past on a small scale, and also it’s a route into Tanzania,” he told conservation website Mongabay. “There are strong connections between the insurgency and support networks in Tanzania, some of which run through Niassa.

“Some local sources have speculated that they may have been looking to move into Niassa to bring recruits from other countries in the region back into their strongholds.”

Pejulo Calenga, director of Mozambique’s National Administration of Conservation Areas, said Niassa Reserve presents a challenging environment. Speaking to the media on May 26, he said the situation “opens space for us to think about the future of the area after this period of tension.”

Amid calls for his military to adapt to meet ISM’s ever-shifting tactics, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo visited the province and spoke during the closing ceremony of a special operations course on May 23.

“Our brothers [in the military] are on the ground repelling the terrorists in that region, and at this moment as we speak they have disappeared from the Niassa Reserve, with our forces still in pursuit,” he said.

Leonel Muchina, spokesperson for the general command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, announced the deployment of a permanent security force to the reserve “to guarantee security and stability.”

Since the attacks, half of the sprawling Niassa Reserve is closed as the Mozambican military patrols the park. Along the Lugenda River, nine tourism camps and 22 conservation scouting posts have been abandoned, according to National Geographic magazine.

Begg said the economic viability of the reserve is in danger, as visitors and locals have sought safer options and tourism operators are struggling with damage control. She struck a defiant tone, vowing to rebuild despite the ongoing threat that ISM poses.

“It seems like the insurgents have withdrawn from the Niassa Province portion of Niassa Reserve, but it is not known whether they are still in the eastern sections of Niassa Reserve across the Lugenda River in Cabo Delgado, or whether they intend to return,” Begg told Mongabay.

“We aren’t going anywhere and remain as committed as ever to Niassa’s wildlife and her people. This is a new reality.”

DSS Arrests Six Suspected Bandits Returning From Hajj At Kaduna Airport

June 24, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested six individuals, three men and three women, suspected to be members of a banditry network operating in Northern Nigeria.

Naija News reports that the suspects were apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday at the Kaduna International Airport shortly after they arrived in the country from Saudi Arabia, where they had completed the Islamic pilgrimage, Hajj.

A senior security source who spoke on condition of anonymity with Sahara Reporters revealed that the operation took place at about 3:40am.

“Today, at 3:40 a.m., operatives of DSS arrested six suspected bandits, three men and three women, at the Kaduna Airport upon their return from Hajj,” the source said.

According to the insider, the suspects had just disembarked from a return flight conveying Nigerian pilgrims when they were intercepted by operatives of the DSS already stationed at the airport.

The identities of the suspects were not immediately made public, but intelligence reports are said to have linked them to banditry operations that have plagued several parts of Northern Nigeria in recent years.

The latest arrest is coming just weeks after a similar high-profile operation was carried out at the Sultan Abubakar International Airport, Sokoto.

On May 19, 2025, a notorious kidnap kingpin, Sani Galadi, was arrested at the Sokoto airport as he attempted to board a flight for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.

Galadi, who was reportedly on the DSS watchlist, was nabbed at the Hajj terminal during a routine screening exercise.

A DSS source confirmed, “He was arrested at the Hajj terminal while undergoing a final screening before their departure for the holy land today. He is currently under investigation and will be charged to court upon the completion of interrogation.”

Following Galadi’s arrest, there were speculations regarding which state he was travelling from. However, Faruk Umar, a top official of the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, clarified that the suspect was not among the Sokoto delegation.

“I also heard about the arrest, but I can comfortably tell you that the suspect is not a pilgrim from Sokoto but from Zamfara State,” Umar said.

He further explained that Sokoto pilgrims were not scheduled to travel that day, indicating that only Zamfara pilgrims were in transit at the time of the arrest.

He said, “Sokoto pilgrims are not travelling today. It’s only those from Zamfara that will move today. The next flight for Sokoto is tomorrow, so definitely the arrested suspect is from Zamfara and not Sokoto.”

The DSS has reportedly ramped up intelligence efforts around Hajj flights amid rising concerns that criminal elements could be attempting to use the pilgrimage as cover to evade security scrutiny or escape justice.

Umar confirmed that DSS screening at Hajj terminals was part of a broader agreement with state pilgrim welfare agencies to ensure secure and incident-free travel for Nigerian pilgrims.

Israel claims victory as US intel says Iran nuclear sites not destroyed

June 25, 2025

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a “historic victory” against Iran despite a US intelligence report concluding that American strikes set back Tehran’s nuclear program by just a few months.

Iran and Israel agreed a ceasefire on Tuesday ending 12 days of tit-for-tat strikes, after US President Donald Trump joined the conflict with bunker-busting bombs at the weekend that he said destroyed key Iranian nuclear sites.

A classified preliminary US intelligence report however, concluded that American strikes on Iran set back its nuclear program by just a few months.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the authenticity of the assessment but said it was “flat-out wrong.”

In an address to the nation after the ceasefire announcement, Netanyahu said “Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.”

“We have thwarted Iran’s nuclear project,” he said. “And if anyone in Iran tries to rebuild it, we will act with the same determination, with the same intensity, to foil any attempt.”

Israel had said its bombing campaign, which began on June 13, was aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, an ambition Tehran has consistently denied.

Israel’s military said that its strikes had set back Iran’s nuclear program “by years.”

After Trump angrily berated both sides for early violations of the truce on Tuesday, Tehran announced it would respect the terms of the deal if Israel did the same, while Israel said it had refrained from further strikes.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country was willing to return to negotiations over its nuclear program, but that his country would continue to “assert its legitimate rights” to the peaceful use of atomic energy.

US media on Tuesday cited people familiar with the Defense Intelligence Agency findings as saying the American strikes did not fully eliminate Iran’s centrifuges or stockpile of enriched uranium.

The strikes sealed off entrances to some facilities without destroying underground buildings, according to the report.

White House Press Secretary Leavitt responded on social media: “The leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program.”

While Iran and Israel have been locked in a shadow war for decades, their 12-day conflict was by far the most destructive confrontation between them.

Israeli strikes hit nuclear and military targets — killing scientists and senior military figures — as well as residential areas, prompting waves of Iranian missile fire on Israel.

The war culminated in US strikes on underground Iranian nuclear sites using bunker-busting bombs — which Israel lacks — followed by an Iranian reprisal targeting the largest US military facility in the Middle East.

Trump shrugged off that response as “weak,” thanking Tehran for giving advance notice and announcing the contours of the ceasefire just hours later.

Some Israelis welcomed the prospect of a truce.

“Everyone is tired. We just want to have some peace of mind,” said Tel Aviv resident Tammy Shel. “For us, for the Iranian people, for the Palestinians, for everyone in the region.”

In Iran, people remained uncertain whether the peace would hold.

Amir, 28, fled from Tehran to the Caspian Sea coast and told AFP by phone, “I really don’t know... about the ceasefire but honestly, I don’t think things will return to normal.”

Israeli strikes on Iran killed at least 610 civilians and wounded more than 4,700, according to the health ministry.

c, according to official figures and rescuers.

The international community reacted with cautious optimism to the truce.

Saudi Arabia and the European Union welcomed Trump’s announcement, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia hoped “that this will be a sustainable ceasefire.”

But French President Emmanuel Macron warned there was an “increased” risk that Iran would attempt to enrich uranium secretly following the strikes on its nuclear sites.

After the truce was announced, Israel’s military chief Eyal Zamir said Israel’s focus would now shift back to Gaza.

The Israeli opposition, the Palestinian Authority and the main group representing the families of Israeli hostages all called for a Gaza truce to complement the Iran ceasefire.

Palestinian Resistance Committees call for Global, Arab, and Islamic Mobilization to end genocide and starvation in Gaza

24 Jun 2025

The Palestinian Resistance Committees today called for a global, Arab, and Islamic popular movement by all free people around the world to stop the ongoing genocide and starvation in Gaza, lift the blockade, and ensure the resumption of humanitarian and relief aid through United Nations agencies.

In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), the Committees said: “The Zionist Nazi enemy continues to commit massacres, slaughters, and systematic and deliberate killings against our people waiting for aid near the American-Zionist-controlled checkpoints. The number of martyrs among our starving people has exceeded 500 since these aid centers were opened, which have now turned into traps and ambushes for killing more innocent civilians.”

The statement added: “These systematic crimes and massacres against aid seekers are being committed by Zionist Nazi hands, with the decision, cover, and participation of the United States, amidst international hypocrisy and an Arab silence that knows only how to condemn and denounce—without any effective action to stop the Zionist holocaust in Gaza.”

Iraq’s diplomatic offensive: how Baghdad led the charge to de-escalate a regional war

June 24, 2025

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – As the Middle East teetered on the brink of a wider conflagration following Israeli and US strikes on Iran, Iraq shifted its historical role from a theater of conflict to a proactive diplomatic leader. Through a swift and calculated initiative, Baghdad successfully unified Arab and Islamic ranks to de-escalate tensions, a move analysts are calling a hallmark of a new, “productive diplomacy” for the nation.

This diplomatic offensive was formalized in Istanbul during an emergency meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers—held at Iraq’s request—and the subsequent 51st Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers from June 20-22, 2025. There, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein tabled a specific, actionable proposal: the formation of a joint, open-membership “Ministerial Contact Committee” to open channels of communication and manage the crisis collectively. In a significant diplomatic victory for Baghdad, the proposal was adopted first by the Arab League and then by the OIC.

The Iraqi initiative was framed as both a moral and strategic necessity. MP Alia Nassif stated the move was crucial to highlight what she termed Israel’s disregard for international law, stripping its “brazen aggression” of any international legitimacy. Fellow MP Ruqayya Rahim Al-Nouri described the initiative as more than a typical diplomatic gesture, calling it the “nucleus of a sustainable Islamic coordination front” that revives the concept of collective deterrence and sends a clear message that an attack on one Muslim state will be met with a unified position.

Political analysts noted that this successful maneuver was not an isolated event. Political researcher Saadoun Al-Saadi explained that the initiative is a continuation of Iraq’s concerted policy over the last two years to reposition itself as a “center for diplomacy” in the region. Analyst Ghalib Al-Da’ami added that the positive reception from other nations was a direct result of the “significant improvement in relations between Iraq and other Arab and Islamic countries,” which allowed Baghdad’s call for unity to be embraced.

This approach was based on a dual principle, according to analyst Ahmed Al-Wandi. “Iraq started from the principle of rejecting aggression against Iran, while at the same time, it sent out calls for calm, believing that dialogue and diplomacy are the only ways to preserve the region’s stability,” he said. Al-Wandi asserts that this clear, early stance from Baghdad influenced other nations and created the political pressure that was instrumental in pushing the parties toward an eventual ceasefire.

In a moment of profound regional crisis, Baghdad chose not to remain on the sidelines. Instead, it moved to shape the response, unify the message, and lead a charge for de-escalation, marking a significant evolution in its role as a key player in Middle Eastern stability.

Iranian military to remain ready to respond after truce: SNSC

Jun 24, 2025

On Tuesday, the council issued a statement regarding the imposition of a cessation of conflict on the Israeli regime and its supporters.

According to the statement, the unity and vigilance of the Iranian people created an opportunity for the perseverance of the country’s armed forces and their astonishing power to be effectively employed during 12 days of strategic conflict, responding to acts of aggression promptly and appropriately.

Thanks to the profound and meaningful actions of the Iranian nation, the resolve of the armed forces, and the prudence of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the enemy was forced to acknowledge its failure and the unilateral end of its aggression, the statement added.

It also said that following the aggression of the Israeli regime, the brave Iranian armed forces responded to a call from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and delivered crushing responses to acts of aggression by adversaries, including those against the United States’ Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

The armed forces of the Islamic Republic assure the great nation of Iran that they are prepared to deliver a decisive and regret-inducing response to any act of aggression by the adversary, maintain no trust in the words of the enemies and keep their fingers on the trigger, the statement concluded.

Israel persistently closes Aqsa Mosque

24 Jun 2025

For the 12th consecutive day, the Zionist enemy authorities have continued to close the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, preventing access to them.

According to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), local sources reported that the enemy has completely closed Al-Aqsa Mosque to worshippers, and only its guards and employees of the Islamic Endowments Department in Quds are permitted to enter. The same strict Israeli restrictions apply to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is completely closed to Christians, while entry to the Old City is restricted to its residents.

Since the 13th of this month, the Israeli occupation army has intensified its aggression against the West Bank, including Quds, closing major and secondary roads in various governorates. This aggression continues in the Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams refugee camps since January 21st, displacing more than 40,000 citizens, demolishing hundreds of homes, destroying infrastructure, killing dozens, and wounding others.

Sources indicated that the Israeli occupation's strict measures have prevented hundreds of thousands of worshippers from reaching the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and performing prayers there.

Israeli police have also imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinians to the Old City, allowing only residents to enter through military checkpoints erected at its entrances. These restrictions have led to the closure of shops.

Israeli restrictions in Quds have included blocking the entrances to neighborhoods, such as the town of At-Tur, with concrete blocks, and setting up Israeli police checkpoints at the entrances to other neighborhoods. The occupation has also closed roads linking Quds and Ramallah, including the Jaba' checkpoint in the north.

The sources pointed out that the enemy's measures in Quds also included night raids in Jabal Mukaber, Issawiya, At-Tur, Wadi al-Joz, and Kafr Aqab, and the use of tear gas and sound bombs inside residential buildings.

They continued: "The percentage of shelters in East Quds neighborhoods does not exceed 10%, while the city's population is 400,000."

They added: "All the new shelters opened by the enemy municipality during the current escalation are located in West Jerusalem, and the 400,000 residents of East Quds remain largely unprotected."

Beijing, a longtime friend of Tehran, turns to cautious diplomacy in Iran’s war with Israel

June 25, 2025

BEIJING: When Israel attacked Iran nearly two weeks ago, the Chinese government, a longtime friend of Iran, jumped into action — at least, when it came to words. It condemned the attacks. Its leader, Xi Jinping, got on the phone with the Russian leader and urged a ceasefire. Its foreign minister spoke with his counterpart in Iran.

But that’s where China stopped. The usual rhetoric was delivered. De-escalation and dialogue were trumpeted. Yet China offered no material support.

Despite Beijing’s clout as a near-peer rival to the United States and its ambition to play a bigger role on the world stage, Beijing refrained from offering military support to Iran, let alone getting directly involved in the conflict. The decision underscored the limitations it faces in the Middle East.

“Beijing lacks both the diplomatic capabilities and the risk appetite to quickly intervene in, and to think it can successfully navigate, this fast-moving and volatile situation,” said Jude Blanchette, director of the China Research Center at RAND.

Given the tangled politics of the Middle East, where China holds substantial economic and energy stakes yet wields minimal military influence, Beijing “isn’t inclined to stick its neck out,” Blanchette added. Instead, the Chinese government opts to remain “a measured, risk-averse actor.”

China weighs commercial interests

Zhu Feng, dean of the School of International Relations at Nanjing University in eastern China, said volatility in the Middle East is not in China’s interests.

“From China’s point of view, the Israel-Iran conflicts challenge and impact China’s business interests and economic security,” Zhu said. “This is something China absolutely does not want to see.”

After the Iranian parliament floated a plan to shut down the strategically located Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, China spoke against it. “China calls on the international community to step up efforts to de-escalate conflicts and prevent regional turmoil from having a greater impact on global economic development,” said Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry.

On Tuesday, following the ceasefire announcement, US President Donald Trump wrote in a social media post: “China can now continue to purchase Oil from Iran,” suggesting the ceasefire would prevent the disruption of Iranian oil production.

A 2024 report by the US Energy Information Administration contained estimates suggesting that roughly 80 percent to 90 percent of the oil exported by Iran went to China. The Chinese economy could struggle to preserve its industrial production without the roughly 1.2 million barrels of oil and other fossil fuels provided by Iran.

Craig Singleton, senior China fellow at the Washington-based think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, summed up Beijing’s responses as “steady oil buys and ritual calls for ‘dialogue’.”

“That’s about it,” Singleton said. “No drones or missile parts, no emergency credit line. Just words calibrated to placate Tehran without rattling Riyadh or inviting US sanctions.”

Beijing’s muted responses also expose the gap between China’s great-power rhetoric and its real reach in the region. Said Singleton: “China’s Gulf footprint is commercial, not combat-ready. When missiles fly, its much-touted strategic partnership with Iran shrinks to statements. Beijing wants discounted Iranian oil and a ‘peace-broker’ headline, while letting Washington shoulder the hard-power risks.”

In statements, China sides with Iran and pledges to mediate

At the United Nations, China, a permanent member of the Security Council, teamed up with Russia and Pakistan in putting forward a draft resolution condemning “in the strongest terms” the attacks against peaceful nuclear sites and facilities in Iran. They called for “an immediate and unconditional ceasefire” even though the United States, another permanent member on the council, is almost certain to veto the proposal.

Shortly after Israel attacked Iran, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, and told him that “China explicitly condemned Israel’s violation of Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.” Wang, using common diplomatic language, said China was “ready to maintain communication with Iran and other relevant parties to continue playing a constructive role in de-escalating the situation.”

Wang later spoke with foreign ministers of Oman and Egypt; both nations are key mediators in the region. And late last week, before the US got involved militarily, Xi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin; the two agreed to stay in closer contact over Iran and work toward de-escalation. But China stayed away from any direct involvement, and Russia also had muted responses to the Israel-Iran conflict.

Iran is an important link in Xi’s ambitious global project Belt and Road Initiative, and in 2023 joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a security group by Russia and China to counter the US-led NATO. It has conducted joint exercises with China, including this year’s “Maritime Security Belt 2025” in the Gulf of Oman, in which Russia also took part. On Wednesday, Beijing will convene a meeting of defense ministers of SCO member nations.

As important as Iran is to China, it is only part of Beijing’s calculus, according to an analysis by the Soufan Center, a New York-based organization that focuses on global security challenges.

In an intel brief, the center said the conflict has revealed that Beijing’s support for its partners, especially those in confrontation with the United States, “is limited by a complex matrix of interests, including its desire to avoid alienating major economic partners and escalating tensions with the West.”

A whirlwind 48 hours: How Trump’s Israel-Iran ceasefire agreement came together

June 25, 2025

WASHINGTON: In a 48-hour whirlwind, President Donald Trump veered from elated to indignant to triumphant as his fragile Israel-Iran ceasefire agreement came together, teetered toward collapse and ultimately coalesced.

Trump, as he worked to seal the deal, publicly harangued the Israelis and Iranians with a level of pique that’s notable even for a commander in chief who isn’t shy about letting the world know what he thinks.

The effort was helped along as his aides and Qatari allies sensed an opening after what they saw as a half-hearted, face-saving measure by Tehran on Monday to retaliate against the US for strikes against three key nuclear sites. And it didn’t hurt that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after 12 days of bombing, could tell the Israeli public that Iran’s nuclear program had been diminished.

“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!” Trump declared in a social media post announcing the ceasefire.

Netanyahu is less than enthusiastic about Trump’s message

The agreement began taking shape early Sunday morning, soon after the US military carried out blistering strikes on Iranian nuclear sites that US defense officials said have set back Tehran’s nuclear program.

Trump directed his team to get Netanyahu on the phone.

The president told Netanyahu not to expect further US offensive military action, according to a senior White House official who was not authorized to comment publicly about the sensitive diplomatic talks.

The US president made the case that it was time to stop the war and return to diplomatic negotiations with Iran. Trump also noted that the US had removed any imminent threat posed by Iran, according to the official.

For his part, Netanyahu listened to Trump’s argument as Israel was nearing its own objectives with Iran, the official said. Netanyahu did not enthusiastically agree, but understood Trump’s stance that the US had no desire for additional military involvement.

Around the same time, Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff spoke directly with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, telling him to come back to the bargaining table because Iran had seen what the US military could do and that it was capable of doing much more, the official said.

Witkoff stressed that the US wanted peace — and Iran should, too.

The president’s envoy said Tuesday in an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” that Trump now wants to land “a comprehensive peace agreement that goes beyond even the ceasefire.”

“We’re already talking to each other, not just directly, but also through interlocutors,” Witkoff said. “I think that the conversations are promising.”

Trump ebullient about Israel-Iran deal prospects

Less than 48 hours later, Trump took to his social media platform to announce that a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” had been achieved.

The ceasefire was based solely on the end of military hostilities, rather than on additional conditions about Iran’s nuclear program or its economic interests. Trump was acting on the belief that Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons had been crippled.

But as Trump spoke with confidence about the coming ceasefire, the Israelis and Iranians were notably quiet — neither side publicly commented on what Trump described as a deal that would be phased in over the coming hours.

Araghchi spoke out first, acknowledging the wheels were in motion for a deal, but stopping short of saying Iran had signed off.

“As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations,” Araghchi posted on X. “However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards.”

Commitment from Iran and Israel to Trump’s ceasefire remained murky

Not long before Trump’s announcement, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to social media to declare that Iran wouldn’t surrender. It was unclear what role Khamenei, the ultimate authority in the Islamic Republic’s theocracy, had in the deal.

And Netanyahu was silent. He would wait more than eight hours after Trump’s announcement to confirm that Israel had accepted the ceasefire and that it had achieved its war goals against Iran.

Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said ceasefire efforts gained steam after Iran’s retaliatory attack on a major US base in the emirate on Monday evening.

The Iranians fired 14 missiles at the base — with US and Qatari defense systems knocking down 13. One of the missiles, according to Trump, was “‘set free’ because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction.” Trump also claimed the Iranians gave the US and Qatar a heads up, allowing the troops to take shelter and the Qataris to clear their typically busy airspace.

Qatar plays a key role in the ceasefire talks

Iran’s restrained direct response to the US bombardment suggested to Trump administration officials that Iran — battered by Israel’s 12-day assault — and its degraded proxy groups, including Lebanon-based Hezbollah and Yemen-based Houthis, didn’t have the wherewithal to expand the fight.

Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, had a “long call” with Trump soon after the Iranian attack on the Al-Ubeid military installation, according to the Qatari prime minister.

“There was an opportunity during this communication to announce a full ceasefire on all fronts, and US authorities asked Qatar to contact Iranian authorities to know how prepared they are for a ceasefire,” the prime minister said.

Trump saw the moment as a clear opening

The president soon got back in touch with Netanyahu to secure his commitment to end the hostilities, officials said. The prime minister agreed to the ceasefire, as long as there were no further attacks by Iran, the officials said.

From there, things moved quickly.

Vice President JD Vance was making an appearance on Fox News’ “Special Report” on Monday evening when Trump took to social media to announce the ceasefire deal had been reached and would go into effect over the coming day. The vice president appeared surprised when host Bret Baier told him that Trump had announced a deal had been reached.

“We were actually working on that just as I left the White House to come over here,” Vance said. “So that’s good news that the president was able to get that across the finish line.”

But after Trump’s announcement, the attacks kept coming. Iran launched a series of strikes on Israel after 4 a.m. local time Tuesday in Tehran, the time that Iran’s foreign minister had said Iran would cease its attacks if Israel ended their airstrikes.

And the Israeli prime minister’s office confirmed that Israel launched a major assault hours ahead of the ceasefire’s start, hitting central Tehran. “We attacked forcefully in the heart of Tehran, hitting regime targets and killing hundreds of Basij and Iranian security forces,” the statement read.

Iranian media confirmed nine casualties in the northern Gilan province. “Four residential buildings were completely destroyed and several neighboring houses were damaged in the blasts.” Fars News Agency reported.

A frustrated Trump lashes out

Trump, who was scheduled to depart the White House early Tuesday to fly to the Netherlands for the NATO summit, was livid. His frustration was palpable as he spoke to reporters on the White House South Lawn.

“I’m not happy with them. I’m not happy with Iran, either, but I’m really unhappy with Israel going out this morning,” Trump said. “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f— — they’re doing.”

Minutes later, he took to his Truth Social platform to send a warning to Israel.

“ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION,” Trump posted. “BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”

Trump climbed aboard Air Force One and was soon on the phone with Netanyahu. He did not mince words with the Israeli leader, according to one of the White House officials. Trump was “exceptionally firm and direct” with Netanyahu “about what needed to happen to sustain the ceasefire.” Netanyahu got the message.

His office confirmed that the Israeli leader held off tougher action after the appeal from Trump and “refrained from additional attacks.”

After the call, Trump once again took to social media to declare the ceasefire was “in effect. ”

“ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran,” Trump declared. “All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran, Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!”

The president went on to spend a considerable chunk of his flight celebrating what his administration is calling a signal achievement.

“It was my great honor to Destroy All Nuclear facilities & capability, and then, STOP THE WAR!”

Lebanon’s revival hangs in the balance as conflict flares between Israel and Iran

TAREK ALI AHMAD AND NAJIA HOUSSARI

June 24, 2025

BEIRUT: Colorful fireworks, sparkler-topped champagne bottles, and the occasional ballistic missile became regular features of nights out at Lebanon’s many rooftop bars and nightclubs last week, as Iran and Israel exchanged fire — providing revelers with a grim and surreal light show.

Social media has been flooded with videos of young people defiantly celebrating life as missiles arc across the night sky. This blend of dark humor and fatalistic resilience reflects a deeper yearning among Lebanese to break free from the endless cycles of conflict.

“The Lebanese love to celebrate as a way of compensating for all the crises they have endured,” Jean Beiruti, secretary-general of the Tourism Syndicates Union, told Arab News.

“Perhaps the clearest proof of this is the widely shared clips of wedding parties and nightclub gatherings even as missiles flew across Lebanon’s skies.”

This summer was meant to mark a renaissance for Lebanon — a glimmer of hope after years of economic collapse and political paralysis.

A new president and prime minister, untainted by the corruption of their predecessors, had taken office. Hezbollah, the powerful Iran-backed armed group, had been severely weakened after a devastating war with Israel.

Signs of revival had begun to appear. Tourists from across the region — notably Emiratis — were returning, choosing Lebanon as their summer retreat.

The familiar hum of vibrant nightlife had returned, and Lebanon’s famed hospitality was once again on full display, suggesting the country might finally be stepping out from the shadow of turmoil.

Yet the juxtaposition of festivity and fragility has never felt starker.

As tourists and locals embraced the promise of a carefree summer, the grim reality of regional tensions sometimes broke through.

Rocket fire streaking across Lebanon’s skies served as a chilling reminder of the ever-present threat at its borders.

“The regional developments had a limited impact on the start of Lebanon’s tourism season, particularly concerning flight bookings,” said Beiruti, reflecting on whether the Israel-Iran conflict had harmed tourist footfall.

“While all June bookings were canceled, July reservations remain unaffected so far. Tourism establishments in Lebanon are working flexibly with customers, offering incentives to maintain bookings and avoid cancellations.”

He is nonetheless hopeful that the setback will be temporary.

“If the security situation stabilizes and flights return to normal, things will go back to the way they were,” he said. “Lebanese expatriates will return with their families to spend the summer in Lebanon. They come every year regardless.

“We have already seen the beginning of Gulf tourism, with visitors arriving from the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar, as well as tourists from Egypt, Iraq and Jordan. These visitors never stopped coming to Lebanon.”

Nevertheless, the wider turmoil in the region has complicated Lebanon’s return to normalcy. Travel advisories issued by Western governments have discouraged artists and tourists from taking part in the country’s summer festivals.

Most notably, the Beiteddine Festival has postponed its program for a second year in a row.

“The opening of the festivals was supposed to feature American artistic groups, but the measure taken by the US State Department advising Americans against traveling to the region prompted us to postpone the festivals,” Hala Chahine, the festival’s spokesperson, told Arab News.

The Baalbeck International Festival may face a similar fate.

“The final decision has not been made yet, and we still have time,” Maya Halabi, the festival’s spokesperson, told Arab News. “The festivals are set to begin at the end of next July, so we can monitor the situation for a sufficient period before making the final decision.”

She added: “The main issue lies with the artistic groups that are set to participate, including those performing in “Carmen,” Georges Bizet’s masterpiece, scheduled for July 25 on the steps of the Temple of Bacchus. They are coming from Romania, Paris and Brazil.”

Tony Ramy, president of the Syndicate of Owners of Restaurants, Cafes, Night Clubs and Pastries, said the hospitality sector “had pinned its hopes on the new era in Lebanon, which brought trust and hope, as psychological factors greatly influence the tourism sector.

“Expectations were high, especially with the Arab openness to Lebanon — particularly from the Gulf countries. The Arab tourists are investors in Lebanon, property owners and big brothers to the Lebanese, and we share with them a historical nostalgia.

“Preparations were extensive, and we gathered some time ago at the Phoenicia Hotel — we, the owners of more than 400 restaurants — to declare that the sector was fully ready for the summer season.

“But the recent developments led to a drop in reservations by as much as 70 percent after airlines stopped landing at Beirut Airport.”

On the ground, Lebanese citizens — who personify the phrase ‘it is what it is’ — are living a dual reality. For many, day-to-day concerns like income and access to basic services outweigh the complexities of geopolitics.

Initially, many feared Lebanon would be dragged back into conflict if Hezbollah joined the fight at Iran’s behest. Those fears eased when the group announced it would stay out — for now.

Thomas Barrack, the US envoy to Syria, had warned Hezbollah against any action that might ignite further instability.

“I can say on behalf of President Trump... that would be a very, very, very bad decision,” Barrack said after his meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri last week, responding to a question on what the US position would be on any involvement by Hezbollah in the war.

Speaking in Doha on Tuesday, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said his government had succeeded in avoiding a new war.

“We managed to prevent Lebanon being dragged into a new war or involvement in the regional conflict that was raging, and today we are looking forward to a new page of diplomatic action,” Salam told a press conference in the Qatari capital.

Lebanon’s recovery remains tightly bound to Hezbollah’s trajectory. Once regarded as Iran’s most formidable regional proxy, Hezbollah has been severely weakened. Over the past year, Israeli operations have decimated its leadership and degraded its military capabilities.

The next day, Iran retaliated with missile fire targeting US forces at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, drawing widespread condemnation. All missiles were intercepted and no casualties were reported.

While full-scale war seemed imminent, a fragile ceasefire — announced by US President Donald Trump on Monday — appears to be holding, at least for now.

Although both Israel and Iran have violated the truce in isolated incidents, the pause has allowed ordinary Lebanese to cling to the hope of avoiding further chaos.

Still, anxiety lingers. Lebanon’s recovery remains fragile, and any renewed fighting could draw Hezbollah back into the conflict — with potentially disastrous consequences.

For now, the country stands at a crossroads. The Lebanese people are determined to seize this rare moment of calm to rebuild and reclaim a sense of normal life. But the fate of that recovery may depend on the restraint of regional powers — and the endurance of the ceasefire.

Since the ceasefire was announced, Ramy said the tourism and hospitality sector had received a vital boost.

“The Arab tourists are last-minute planners,” he told Arab News.

“Now we await the Arab tourists from the Gulf, and we expect the arrival of Jordanian and Egyptian tourists. These come quickly because the distance between us is short, and they have their own hotels and restaurants they frequent. We hope for a summer similar to that of 2023.

“What matters most is security and political stability.”

Turning plastic into fuel: Photos of Gaza’s youth surviving with makeshift burners

June 24, 2025

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip: South of Gaza City, along the Sea Road that runs beside the Mediterranean, Palestinian youth are producing fuel by melting plastic in makeshift burners. With limited access to commercial fuel, they collect plastic waste, process it in metal drums to extract crude fuel, and then bottle and sell it to passersby.

The work unfolds in the open air, where black smoke billows from the burners, blanketing the roadside. The area is lined with small tents where the youth store materials and rest between shifts. Horse-drawn carts and pedestrians regularly pass through the smoke-filled stretch, moving between northern and southern Gaza.

Most of those involved in the trade are displaced and have few other sources of income. The fuel they produce is used locally, often for generators or transport, and sold at a lower price than commercial alternatives.

Though the process is simple, it involves long hours and exposure to fumes and open flames. For these youth, it has become a way to earn money and support their families in a difficult and unstable environment.

Saudi crown prince and Iranian president discuss Iran-Israel ceasefire deal

June 24, 2025

RIYADH: During a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel.

The prince expressed the Kingdom’s hope that the truce would help restore security and stability in the region and prevent the risk of further confrontation, the Saudi Press Agency reported. He underscored Saudi Arabia’s consistent position in support of diplomatic dialogue as the preferred path for the resolution of disputes.

The pause in the conflict between Israel and Iran, which began on June 13, was announced hours after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missile strikes on Monday that targeted Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military installation in the Middle East.

In the aftermath of the attack, the crown prince spoke with Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s solidarity with the country, and strongly condemned what he described as Iran’s “unjustified and blatant aggression” against the Gulf state.

The crown prince also received a phone call from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Tuesday. Both leaders welcomed the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement and stressed the need to exert necessary efforts to preserve security and stability.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the crown prince held a similar phone call.

‘Aramcorama’ at Ithra: A living archive of energy, culture, memory

HIND ALKHUNAIZI

June 24, 2025

DHAHRAN: “Aramcorama,” within Ithra’s museum, reimagines the exhibition experience, turning the Kingdom’s industrial history into a personal and immersive journey.

Rather than simply documenting the rise of the country’s oil industry, the exhibition explores how it shaped cities, communities, and modern life.

It encourages visitors to reflect on how past events changed people’s sense of identity.

“Aramcorama” tells the story through a rich selection of visuals. Geological maps, handwritten notes, internal messages, and photographs trace nearly a century of growth and change.

Visitors can explore a timeline highlighting each decade and framed by hanging prints and illuminated media displays. This setup creates an engaging environment that feels dynamic and full of discovery.

Abdullah Alshammasi, a longtime engineer at Aramco, spoke to Arab News about how the company influenced more than just the oil and gas industry and impacted generations of employees and locals.

He said: “The company certainly had lasting consequences on the earliest generations that worked in it.

“The fact is, since the company was established it needed a knowledgeable workforce, so a campaign of education was also established, and it steadily increased in depth from manual skills to softer, more intellectual skills.”

The exhibition also showcases vintage safety posters that were originally used to display workplace rules. These posters show how design and language have changed over the years, highlighting the changes in style and communication.

This section of the exhibition captures the story’s understated honesty, letting ordinary items like posters, letters, and tools tell the story of values, habits, and shifting responsibilities.

As visitors explore the exhibition, they can see how the company’s global outlook has influenced not only individual lives but also the nation’s perspective.

Alshammasi explained: “Generations have now been everywhere around the globe, studying at the best institutions, bringing back with them a better sense of the world, widening their horizons and, therefore, our societies and culture.”

“Aramcorama” ultimately reflects how modern Saudi society was built; not just through buildings and oil fields, but also through education, progress, and mindset.

Alshammasi said: “It tells me that Aramco is as old as our modern lives.”

This fact is especially evident in the Eastern Province, where the company’s presence reshaped daily life, and Alshammasi added: “Aramco’s history is the modern history of the communities that lived in the Eastern Province. Their lives were directly affected by the company, for good and for ill.”

The exhibition does not hide that tension, but invites reflection on both progress and its costs, what was gained and what may have been lost.

“Aramcorama” does not ask visitors to celebrate or criticize, but to notice, reflect, and form their own opinions.

It respects the complexity of history and shows how innovation, labor, infrastructure, and community are all deeply connected.

Islamic coalition launches training program in Comoros

June 24, 2025

RIYADH: A new training program, “Building the Capacity of Imams and Preachers,” has been launched in Moroni, Comoros, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.

Organized by the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, the initiative is part of the organization’s broader intellectual strategy.

Comoros Defense Minister Youssoufa Mohamed Ali reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the coalition in combating extremism and eradicating terrorism.

He highlighted the coalition’s key role, particularly its focus on intellectual engagement, and said the program’s launch was a significant step forward.

Maj. Gen. Mohammed Al-Moghedi, the coalition’s secretary-general from Saudi Arabia, said the initiative was part of a wider effort involving 15 strategic programs across four areas — intellectual development, media, counter-terrorism financing and military operations.

Recently, the coalition held specialized training on combating terrorist financing in Bamako, Mali. The program aimed to strengthen national capacity to counter terrorist financing and money laundering.

Jouf’s historic wells tell timeless stories

June 24, 2025

RIYADH: In the heart of the Jouf region, the timeless craft of stone building and the use of palm trunks and fronds have revitalized its ancient wells.

These historical water sources, once vital for survival, were built using natural, locally sourced materials at no financial cost, a Saudi Press Agency report said recently.

Among them, Salma’s Well in Sakaka stands out as an educational site for young people. It showcases traditional extraction methods and how locals secured drinking water and irrigated their farms.

Heritage expert Ahmed Al-Arfaj said that the wells are made of sandstone, palm trunks, and fronds. Each features key elements: a water distribution channel, a collection basin, and a circular stone to control water flow.

Essential tools at the wellhead include a rope and pulley, once used to raise and lower a water bucket. Historically, locals used livestock — such as camels and cows — to extract water, with animals pulling the rope.

This practice changed in the 1980s with the introduction of generators, which made the process more efficient, the SPA reported.

Today, Salma’s Well stands as a vibrant symbol of Jouf’s heritage, drawing visitors eager to explore the stories of these ancient wells and experience the region’s rich history.

Saudi Arabia to replace Kaaba’s Kiswa as Hijri Year 1447 begins

June 24, 2025

Dubai: The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque is set to begin the ceremonial changing of the Kiswa, the black silk covering of the Holy Kaaba this Thursday, in observance of the start of the Islamic year 1447 AH.

The new Kiswa, completed after nearly 11 months of meticulous craftsmanship, was produced at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswah in the Umm Al Joud district of Mecca.

The process follows centuries-old traditions and involves seven main stages: water purification, silk washing, black dyeing, weaving, geometric printing of Quranic verses, embroidery with gold and silver threads, and final assembly and inspection.

Made from 47 intricately woven pieces of black silk, the Kiswa is adorned with 68 verses from the Quran, embroidered using silver threads plated with 24-karat gold. The total weight of the Kiswa reaches approximately 1,415 kilograms.

The ceremonial removal of the old Kiswa will begin on Wednesday afternoon, the 29th of Dhu Al Hijjah, following Asr prayer. The official installation of the new covering will take place in the early hours of Thursday, the first day of Muharram, ushering in the new Hijri year.

Hijri New Year: Ajman announces paid holiday for government employees

June 24, 2025

Ajman: The Department of Human Resources in Ajman has issued a circular declaring Friday, June 27, 2025, as a holiday for the Hijri New Year (1447) for all government entities in the emirate.

On this occasion, the department extended its warmest congratulations to the UAE leadership and people, as well as to Arab and Islamic nations, praying for continued health and well-being.

The announcement follows an earlier directive from the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources confirming the same date for public sector holidays. The UAE government had also previously announced a paid holiday for both public and private sector employees to mark the occasion.

The Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, commemorates the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, an event that marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. Though the occasion is not typically celebrated with the same scale as Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha, it remains an important date in the Islamic world and is recognized as a public holiday in the UAE.

In addition to the Islamic New Year, the next religious holiday on the horizon will be Mawlid Al Nabawi, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, expected to be observed on Thursday, September 4, 2025. As with all Islamic holidays, the exact date will depend on the official moon-sighting and confirmation by relevant religious authorities in the UAE.

France warns Iran sanctions still possible if no nuclear deal

June 25, 2025

UNITED NATIONS, United States: France and its European partners are still prepared to reactivate sanctions on Iran if an agreement is not reached soon on its nuclear program, the French ambassador to the UN warned Tuesday.

“Time is running out,” said Jerome Bonnnafont at a UN Security Council meeting, in reference to the October expiration of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

“We expect Iran to return to talks without delay in order to achieve a robust, verifiable and lasting diplomatic solution,” he added.

Bonnafont said negotiations were the only way to “guarantee the impossibility of an Iranian military nuclear program,” days after the United States conducted strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities.

“France and its E3 partners (Germany and the United Kingdom) remain ready to use the leverage established by Resolution 2231, that of a ‘snapback’ (of sanctions), if a satisfactory agreement is not reached by summer,” he warned.

UK ambassador Barbara Wood concurred, saying: “We will use all diplomatic levers at our disposal to support a negotiated outcome, and ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon.”

UN Security Council Resolution 2231 endorsed the 2015 agreement Iran reached with the E3 countries, as well as China, Russia and the United States, to regulate its nuclear program in return for eased sanctions.

President Donald Trump removed the United States from the agreement in 2018.

Liverpool Imam trapped in Qatar as Iran attacks US military base

24 June 2025

A British Imam found himself trapped in Qatar as missiles rained down on a US military base near the country's capital.

Imam Adam Kelwick heard "kids crying and women screaming" as a series of explosions echoed in the distance on Monday, 23 June.

Airspace above Qatar was closed yesterday in anticipation of the Iranian military attacks, and more than 20 flights scheduled to land in Doha were diverted.

Adam said: "We didn't know what was going to happen. About 7:30pm we were in his house and there was like a series of explosions, boom-boom-boom-boom. I counted at the time about 20 explosions."

Adam, who is the leader of the Abdullah Quilliam Mosque in Liverpool, touched down in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, just a few hours before the bombs hit at 7.30pm local time.

The dad-of-five said: "Quite a few people were expecting it. Just over an hour before the strikes happened it was announced Qatar airspace was closed.

"I had just arrived yesterday morning to meet with friends, and I'm supposed to be leaving on the 26th. But as soon as I landed and had a rest, I woke up to find the airspace had closed.

"I was at my friend's house at the time. He was telling everyone you need to fill your cars with petrol, you don't know what's going to happen.

"We had literally just come back from the petrol station, I was in my car, he was in his, we'd just filled the cars up, not knowing what to expect and thinking we might need to drive down to the Saudi border."

Iranian missiles targeted Al-Udeid, the largest US military base in the Middle East, at around 7.30pm local time.

The attack was launched in response to the bombing three of Iran's nuclear programme facilities by American forces on Saturday, 21 June.

Qatar authorities said 19 missiles were fired on Al Udeid Air Base, 18 of which were intercepted by air defence systems. One missile was reported to have struck the military base, but caused no casualties.

Adam, 42, said: "I'm still trying to reconcile what I have seen in the news with what we experienced. It's likely the explosions we heard were the surface-to-air missiles intercepting the missiles in the air."

Adam, who is expecting to return to Liverpool on Thursday as planned, said: "Last night I was receiving messages from British expats living here and there did seem to be a bit more panic among them.

"I know in these expat group WhatsApps, there were messages going round of a second wave, more attacks.

"But they couldn't really provide anything other than rumours and the facts was what I was searching for. When the strikes did happen and then they were over, I think that helped me keep calm.

"I was getting calls left right and centre from friends and family back home asking if I was OK. All the focus and attention was on Qatar, but the attack itself only lasted about a minute."

Following the missile attack, Adam posted a video to social media saying "people who are pushing for World War 3 need to sort their heads out".

He said: "I've worked in active warzones in the past and it enrages me to see people, whether they are pro-Israeli, pro-America, pro-Iran, whatever side they're on, it's like they're itching for war, and I want them to know the realities of war and who it impacts. It always impacts the most vulnerable.

"When it comes to the crunch the people who make the decisions, the people who give the orders are very rarely the ones who are impacted.

"It's always the most vulnerable in society, it's the poorest, women, elderly people. It's the most vulnerable in society who have to pay the price for the decisions made by people who are divorced from reality. I wish the people responsible for making these decisions had seen what I've seen."

Mosque extension approved with changes to proposed height in Blackburn

Bill Jacobs

25 JUN 2025

Proposals by a Blackburn mosque to raise its roof to accommodate six new Madrassah classrooms have been approved. The alterations to the town centre’s Masjid-E-Gausia in Chester Street were granted planning permission by councillors.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s planning committee on Thursday (June 19) approved an amended scheme which had reduced the original proposed height of the extension. The meeting imposed 10 conditions on the permission which included the preparation of a Traffic Management Plan relating to the management/marshalling of vehicles at the entry/exit points of the application site during peak times.

They also restricted the use of the new classrooms to Monday to Friday: 16:30 to 19:30 hours; and Saturday: 10:00 to 13:00 hours. The conditions also included the submission of a scheme for ecological enhancement measures at the site.

The original application had generated a 220-signature petition in its support. But the plan also generated three letters of representation on grounds including that the original building is an eyesore, loss of privacy, loss of light and noise concerns, inadequate parking, traffic, and litter problems.

A planning officer’s report to councillors recommending approval with 10 conditions says: “The proposals, in enhancing and expanding the offer of the existing educational use at the facility for the purpose of the local community, represent a sustainable form of development that will deliver a number of social benefits. Directly south-east lies Audley Sports and Community Centre, which is owned by the Jamia Ghosia Mosque Committee.

“The proposal seeks to convert the existing main hipped roof to a dual-pitched form, together with raising the existing roof height by approximately 350 millimetres. This represents an amendment to the original scheme, by way of a reduction in the height of the proposed roof lift, and the dormer additions have been scaled down in size.

“The original proposals sought to raise the roof height by 1.4 metres, and given the alterations to replace the hipped roof with a dual pitch, it resulted in a significantly bulky and dominant form of development. As such, amendments have been secured in regard to the roof lift aspect, which has been considerably lowered and now comprises a very modest lift.

“The proposed dormer additions are limited to the roof space and have been designed to be set back from the eaves detail and down from the ridge line.”

2024: Islamic celebration in Ipswich raised more than 1,500

25 JUN 2025

By Chloe Western

On this day in 2024, the Ipswich Star reported that an Islamic celebration in Ipswich had raised more than £1,500 for good causes.

The Eid al-Adha Jama'ah prayer took place on the lawn of Christchurch Mansion on June 16, attracting more than 1,300 attendees.

Organised by the Park Select Committee, this event marked the second such prayer, following a successful gathering in April for Eid al-Fitr, which raised £1,060 for Suffolk Refugee Support.

This time, the committee raised £1,640, which was donated to East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH).

Anne Austin, the community fundraiser at EACH, said: "This kindness means that the children, young people and their families currently in our care will continue to receive an outstanding family-centred, needs-led service."

She highlighted the importance of community support, noting that the charity relies on donations for the majority of its income.

Councillor Ruman Muhith, a member of the Park Select Committee, praised the turnout despite the rain.

He said: "We are delighted to announce that through the generosity of the Muslim communities, we raised £1,640 for EACH.

"This contribution will help them continue their crucial work, ensuring the best possible quality of life for children and their families during challenging times."

Shaykh Masum Shaheed, also part of the select committee, said: "As Muslims who have gathered in the park, a central part of our religion is to help others and also to give in charity.

"If you look at our Holy Quran, there's a lot mentioned about charity and how we need to help one another."

German court lifts ban on far-right magazine

25 JUN 2025

Damien McGuinness

A court in Leipzig has lifted a ban imposed by the German government on the influential far-right magazine Compact.

The ruling is seen by some as a blow to Germany's fight against right-wing extremism, although for others it could be proof of the country's high standards of free speech.

In July 2024 the German interior ministry banned the magazine, arguing that it undermined the German constitution with rhetoric that attacked minorities.

"It is a central mouthpiece of the right-wing extremist scene," said German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser at the time. "This magazine incites unspeakable hatred against Jews, against people with a migration background, and against our parliamentary democracy."

The magazine is linked to the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD) and previously had been classed by German domestic intelligence as right-wing extremist.

In Tuesday's ruling judges accepted that the magazine published anti-constitutional content, but decided this did not justify a ban.

Many statements in Compact could be seen as "exaggerated but permissible criticism," presiding Judge Ingo Kraft told the court. "The constitution guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of the press, even towards enemies of the constitution."

After the announcement, Compact's editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer, who described his magazine as "democracy's assault gun", said the ruling would also help the AfD party. If his magazine cannot be banned, then neither can the AfD, he said.

There is a ferocious debate in Germany about whether to attempt to ban the AfD, which has also been classed as right-wing extremist by German intelligence. Even many critics of the AfD say a ban could be counterproductive by playing into the party's victim narrative.

Over the past year, German officials have banned, or attempted to ban, a number of anti-constitutional organisations, some linked to far-right extremist groups. The AfD and far-right activists say they are being silenced by an oppressive state.

Some supporters of Donald Trump have also accused Germany of suppressing free speech. At the Munich Security Conference in February US Vice President JD Vance stunned European officials with a blistering attack on Germany, accusing mainstream politicians of shutting the AfD out of politics and of an anti-democratic clampdown on free speech.

In fact, AfD politicians are a staple of German TV talkshows and have equal debating rights to mainstream parties in the German parliament.

Due to Germany's 20th-Century experience of oppressive Nazi and communist totalitarian regimes, there are high hurdles to restricting speech and banning publications and organisations.

Cases often get taken to court and, as in this ruling, overturned by judges. The decision to allow the far-right magazine Compact to be published, cannot be appealed by the government.

British man charged over 'wedding' with child, 9, at Disneyland Paris

24 JUN 2025

Laura Gozzi

A British man has been charged in connection with organising the "mock wedding" of a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl in Disneyland Paris.

French prosecutors said the 39-year-old man was a convicted sexual offender who is wanted in the UK. His name has not been made public.

He was arrested when police were called to the amusement park on Saturday morning at dawn by a "guest" who said he had been hired by the man to play the father of the bride.

The man said he had been paid €12,000 to play the role and that he only realised at the last minute that the "bride" was a child, according to a statement by Meaux prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier.

The statement also said the Ukrainian girl - who arrived in France two days earlier - had not been a victim of either physical or sexual violence and had not been "forced to play the role" of bride.

A woman who says she was hired to play the role of a guest told BFMTV that when she arrived at Disneyland Paris she saw a "little girl dressed in white with her hair all done up and I saw a woman who picked her up in her arms... and I was shocked, I burst into tears".

"When I saw [it was a] child - it was horrific."

Around 100 French extras had been recruited to take part in the fake ceremony, which was to be filmed in a private capacity.

The British man had reportedly hired Disneyland Paris for several hours for the stunt, in which he was to play the role of the groom.

Preliminary findings also stated he had allegedly been "made-up professionally so that his face appeared totally different from his own", according to the prosecutor.

Three other people - including the 41-year-old mother of the girl, a 24-year-old Latvian woman who was to play the bride's sister and a 55-year-old Latvian man - were also arrested.

By Tuesday only the British man was still being held by police.

The British man and the Latvian woman appeared in front of a judge in Meaux on 23 June and the man was charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, and identity theft and placed in pretrial detention.

The Latvian remains a witness in the investigation.

The prosecutor's statement also said that Disneyland Paris had been "deceived" and that the organiser had used a fake Latvian ID to hire the venue. Disneyland Paris can be rented by members of the public outside opening hours.

BFMTV reported that the "mock wedding" may have cost organiser more than €130,000 (£110,000).

Mr Bladier's statement said that the British man "was reportedly convicted in the past, including for offences of a sexual nature against minors.

"He is, as such, listed in the British database of sexual offenders and is currently wanted nationally by the judicial authorities of his country of origin due to a breach of the requirements deriving from said order."

It is unclear, at this stage, what the point of the "stunt" was.

The investigation continues.

Putin orders government to prepare for return of foreign companies

25 Jun, 2025

President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Russian government to lay the groundwork for the return of foreign firms that left the domestic market due to the Ukraine conflict.

Many major corporations, including Microsoft and McDonald’s, cut ties with Moscow in 2022, citing the launch of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. The exodus of foreign brands was also precipitated by sweeping Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

Putin has repeatedly said that foreign businesses left of their own accord and that the country would be open to their return. He stressed, however, that the interests of Russian companies must also be taken into account.

After meeting with the domestic lobbying group Delovaya Rossiya on Monday, Putin instructed the government to examine proposals regarding the terms under which “individuals from unfriendly foreign countries” could do business in Russia and acquire real estate and stocks.

Russia’s “unfriendly country” list currently includes most EU members, as well as the US, UK, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said last week that restrictions on investments from “unfriendly” nations could be eased.

In May, Putin said Russia must develop a “pragmatic” approach to foreign companies and evaluate their past actions on a case-by-case basis. “If it benefits us to see a company return, we should allow it. If not, we should find a thousand reasons to keep it out,” he said.

Kremlin investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev said in April that US firms had lost an estimated $300 billion by exiting the Russian market. Washington and Moscow revived direct negotiations earlier this year and have agreed to gradually restore the ties severed by the Biden administration in 2022.

Iran open to ending conflict if sovereignty respected, Anwar says after call with Pezeshkian

By Malay Mail

24 Jun 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Iran is ready to halt military action against Israel if attacks on its own and Palestinian territories stop, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

Anwar said this after a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who outlined Tehran’s conditions for peace amid the escalating conflict.

Pezeshkian asked Anwar to convey Iran’s stance to other Muslim nations and urged them to “not be swayed by biased narratives, and to understand the real context of Iran’s retaliatory actions.”

According to Anwar, Pezeshkian said Iran would respond positively to peace if its sovereignty and that of Palestine were respected.

Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s strong condemnation of Israeli strikes on Gaza and Iran, which have killed civilians, military commanders, and scientists.

He said the attacks went beyond humanitarian norms and international legal standards.

Malaysia recognises Iran’s right to defend itself, Anwar added, adding that it would be hypocritical for the world to support Israel’s military actions while denying Iran the same right.

Israel launched surprise strikes on major Iranian military and nuclear sites on June 13, which led to retaliatory attacks from Iran. The US intervened on June 22 by bombing the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan Iranian nuclear sites.

Malaysia, Kyrgyz Republic to boost halal, Islamic banking

Bernama

2025-06-25

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to work together in developing Islamic banking and boosting trade in halal products, with Malaysia offering its expertise in both sectors to help develop relevant facilities and services in Kyrgyz Republic.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said during his meeting with President Sadyr Zhaparov, both leaders also discussed setting up Islamic banks to create better financial systems.

“Of course, we discussed the issue of Islamic banking, halal, construction, financial arrangements and programmes, including the setting up of Islamic banks.

“There will be follow-up meetings by our ministers. You (Zhaparov) have brought key ministers to Malaysia, and my colleagues will certainly respond to that, more in terms of securing better understanding and friendship, but also to ensure that the bilateral programmes and projects in terms of trade investments can continue.”

Anwar said this at a joint press conference with Zhaparov at Seri Perdana here today.

As part of bilateral partnership, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic also agreed to explore the halal cooperation action plan proposed by Zhaparov.

“This will all be further explored...and of course you (Kyrgyz Republic) have this great capacity in terms of hydropower, green energy, renewable energy, which Malaysia would certainly be very interested to understand, study and also benefit,” he said.

The Kyrgyz Republic has substantial hydropower potential and it is the country’s primary source of electricity, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of its production.

The Prime Minister also said Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to enhance collaboration in education and research, emphasising its impetus to foster greater people-to-people ties as well as expand on both social and economic potential of both countries.

In this regard, Anwar said Malaysia will be extending its technical and educational assistance via the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) for the Kyrgyz people.

“Our institutions, of course, will be available for you to identify people to be trained, and we will certainly be more appreciative if we can also have exchanges with you,” he added.

S’pore asatizah must be able to guide the practice of Islam in modern societies: Faishal Ibrahim

JUN 24, 2025

SINGAPORE – It is important for Muslim religious teachers in Singapore to understand the principles of their faith, as well as the unique multiracial, multi-religious fabric of their society, said Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim.

These teachers, known as asatizah, must be thought leaders who can effectively guide the practice of Islam in modern societies, uniting sound religious scholarship with contemporary needs, he added.

Associate Professor Faishal said such leadership is increasingly important, as evolving social norms and global interconnectedness have created complex problems that require fresh approaches to religious education.

“Our asatizah play a crucial role in this journey to provide guidance for the Muslim community in navigating these challenges,” he said.

Prof Faishal was speaking on June 24 at the first meeting of the advisory panel for the upcoming Singapore College of Islamic Studies (SCIS), which is expected to take in its first cohort of 60 students in 2028.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the International Conference on Cohesive Societies, a three-day conference on multiculturalism.

Prof Faishal said the 10-member panel’s international perspective and scholarly insights will be invaluable in shaping SCIS’ research and academic programmes.

Panel members will help identify emerging global trends affecting Muslim communities. They will also shape the college’s research focus, educational standards and international collaborations, he added.

The panel is made up of international scholars such as the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Nazir Mohamed Ayyad; Dr Salama Dawood, president of Al-Azhar University in Egypt; and Professor Driss Fassi Fihri, vice-president of Al-Qarawiyyin University in Morocco.

It is chaired by Prof Faishal, who took over the Muslim Affairs portfolio from Mr Masagos Zulkifli in May.

SCIS, which has been in the works for eight years, was formally announced in August 2024 during Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s National Day Rally speech.

The Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, who is also on the advisory panel, elaborated during the meeting on the importance of developing future religious leaders in Singapore.

He said Singapore’s asatizah who return from studying overseas have noticeable gaps in their ability to contextualise knowledge against the cultural diversity here.

There are programmes meant to bridge the gap – such as the postgraduate certificate in Islam in contemporary societies by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) – but one wonders whether this is the best approach, he added.

“We recognise a high degree of religious and spiritual interconnectedness and commonalities in the Islamic way of life between many Muslim communities, and that is why we have always been supportive of our students to study in renowned Islamic institutions,” he said.

“But we also acknowledge that there is an equally significant degree of uniqueness in our traditions and experience that needs serious attention.”

If this difference is not carefully addressed in the way that Islam is studied and taught, it will become a big challenge in matters of religious leadership, Dr Nazirudin said.

“This will be one of the most major contributions of the college – to be able to find the right balance and to reduce divergence... and rework what normative Islam is where social context truly matters,” he added.

Ustazah Farah Aljunied, senior director of higher education and research at Muis, said another driving force behind the college is the evolving aspirations of students, who want broader career opportunities and more technology-enhanced learning.

Security concerns due to the volatile situation in some overseas study destinations have also led to increased interest in having a local option, she said.

Currently, more than 460 students from Singapore are pursuing tertiary Islamic education overseas. Close to 70 per cent are in schools in the Middle East and North Africa, in countries like Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait.

SCIS’ steering committee is currently looking into areas such as human resource management, corporate and academic governance, and curriculum development to firm up the set-up of the college, Ms Farah said.

After engagements with religious teachers, Ms Farah said senior asatizah have expressed support for the direction that the college is taking.

Around 50 per cent of madrasah leaders and teachers expressed interest in contributing to the college’s development through curriculum development, administrative matters and research, she added.

She said engagements with madrasah students also yielded excitement and support, with 76 per cent of students expressing trust in the college’s expertise.

Prof Faishal said: “Seeing this institution come to life means a lot to me and the community here in Singapore. It fulfils a longstanding community aspiration to have our own Islamic institute of higher learning, something we can all be proud of as Singaporeans.

“I’m very confident that we will be able to develop not only a unique institution with programmes that are contextualised to our setting, but also something that can value-add to what is available globally.”

Greater accessibility targeted through 1,000 Inclusive Mosques program

 June 24, 2025

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Religious Affairs has launched the 1,000 Inclusive Mosques program to create mosques that are accessible to all groups, including people with disabilities and older adults.

The ministry's Director General of Muslim Community Development, Abu Rokhmad, stated at the program's launch event in Jakarta on Tuesday that mosques must evolve into centers of social services and empowerment that are safe for vulnerable groups.

He emphasized that the inclusive mosques program addresses not only physical accessibility but also the perspectives of mosque administrators and congregants.

In addition, he highlighted the importance of collective awareness that every citizen has the right to safe and respectful access to religious services.

Director of Islamic Religious Affairs and Sharia Development of the ministry, Arsad Hidayat, explained that most mosques are still far from ideal in guaranteeing access for vulnerable groups.

"A survey by the Center for Research and Community Service found that out of 47 mosques checked, 46 are not yet disability- and elderly-friendly," he pointed out.

He noted that the survey shows mosques are not yet treated as public spaces that uphold the principle of fair access. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, around 23 million Indonesians have disabilities.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has issued the Decree of the Director General of Muslim Community Development Number 958 of 2021, which serves as the foundation for developing mosques accessible to people with disabilities and older adults.

The decree sets standards for physical facilities, such as ramps and special toilets, and requires training for mosque managers to ensure fair and respectful service for all worshippers.

He cited the Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta and the el-Syifa Mosque in Ciganjur, South Jakarta, as positive examples that have installed ramps and special toilets.

Masyhuri Malik, chair of the Central Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), Indonesia's largest Islamic organization, expressed support for the inclusive mosques program.

He underlined that mosques not only function as places of worship but also as centers of community development, including for older adults.

Furthermore, Malik emphasized the importance of programs that encourage healthy and meaningful social interactions among older adults.

Malaysia, Kyrgyz Republic call for Afghanistan’s reintegration into international community

25 Jun 2025

PUTRAJAYA, June 25 — Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic today called for greater efforts to acknowledge Afghanistan into the international community.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a joint press conference with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov here, said the two countries shared the view that Afghanistan should be embraced in the international community, albeit with certain observations.

“I share your views on that, because as a country closer to Afghanistan, you (Kyrgyz Republic) have a better understanding, and we will certainly benefit from your advice and views on this,” said Anwar.

The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021 following the swift collapse of the United States-backed government, after the withdrawal of American and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) forces.

Despite their history of harsh rule, the international community did not impose full sanctions on the Taliban.

This was mainly due to fears of worsening the humanitarian crisis, as millions of Afghans faced hunger and economic collapse.

Aid organisations and some governments chose to maintain limited engagement to allow humanitarian assistance.

In March, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) head Roza Otunbayeva told the UN Security Council the Taliban must show they are serious about reintegration, with clear respect for international obligations like women’s rights and counter-terrorism, if Afghanistan is to resume its place in the global system.

Besides Afghanistan, Anwar and Zhaparov also expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and reaffirmed their strong condemnation of Israel’s aggression.

“We want Israel to stop this aggression, colonisation, and genocide and to provide security and justice to the people of Gaza who have suffered so long.

“They continue to suffer because of the failure of the international community to observe basic human rights, and the contradiction and hypocrisy in many of the Western countries when it comes to atrocities inflicted upon the people of Palestine and Gaza,” Anwar said.

Anwar and Zhaparov also expressed support for the right of Iranian authorities to respond to the aggression by Israel, in order to ensure that the peace is fair, and the amicable resolution means that countries in the Middle East, the Arab world, maintain their security without this aggression by Israel.

On another note, Anwar said he has received a personal message from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, supporting the ceasefire and calling all countries, particularly Muslim countries, to support peace and condemn the continued aggression by Israel. — Bernama
