Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute: After reserving order, Allahabad HC agrees to hear mosque lawyer

June 2, 2024

A view of the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex and Shahi Eidgah Mosque, in Mathura (ANI Photo)

--------------

In an unexpected development, the Allahabad High Court, after reserving its order on an application challenging the maintainability of suits related to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute, has reopened the same for hearing, after the counsel for Shahi Eidgah Masjid, Mathura — Mehmood Pracha moved an application requesting that he be heard in the matter and prayed for video recording of the court proceedings.

Earlier, on May 31, Tasneem Ahmadi concluded her arguments on behalf of the management committee, Shahi Idgah Masjid, which is a defendant-respondent in the original suits.

Earlier, on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, Afzal Ahmad had already concluded his arguments in the suits, where the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board is arrayed as a defendant.

Thereafter, Mehmood Pracha, the counsel, addressed the court through video conferencing on behalf of the management committee of Shahi Idgah Masjid and concluded the same. The court had also heard the counsels for Hindu side plaintiffs – Hari Shankar Jain, Rina N Singh, Saurabh Tiwari and others at length.

After the aforesaid proceedings, in the open court, Justice Mayank Kumar Jain, on Friday, communicated to the counsel for the parties that the order was being reserved.

However, after the conclusion of the arguments and reserved the order in the open court, an application was filed on behalf of the management committee of Shahi Idgah Masjid, with the prayers to “issue appropriate directions to ensure that the right of an audience through video conferencing of Mehmood Pracha, whose vakalatnama is on the record, is not obstructed in any manner”.

The prayer also added that the defendant’s right to be heard was protected by appropriate measures through video recording of the proceedings.

The court noted that Mehmood Pracha remained present through video conferencing on several occasions and was also present in person before the court. He had ample opportunity to argue the matter, the court added.

The court further made it clear, saying that “The right of audience to any of the counsel, who desired to appear and argue the matter through video conferencing, was never obstructed as the entire hearing, which commenced from February 22, 2024, was conducted in the presence of the parties to the suits as well as their respective counsels”.

However, keeping in view the principle of transparency, the court accepted the request of Mehmood Pracha, saying, “However, given the phrase ‘justice should not only be done but must also be seen to be done’ and to do complete justice in the matter, this court feels appropriate to provide an opportunity to Mehmood Pracha, advocate to address the court through video conferencing.”

The court directed the registry of this court to inform counsel for the parties and all concerned about the date fixed in the matter forthwith, so that they may be present on the date fixed.

Muslims, minorities have same rights in Pakistan: Justice Shah

June 02, 2024

Federal law minister says he wants minority judges in higher judiciary.

-----------

LAHORE   -   Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of Supreme Court of Pakistan Saturday expressed his wish to have minority judges in the judiciary as he called for co-existence and tolerance in society. “There is only one flag in the world where you [minorities] are reflected,” he said while addressing a conference organised by the Implementation Minority Rights Forum in Lahore on Saturday.

“This white colour represents you. I also say that crescent and star are also white. All these things represent you. We must understand that you are recognised in the national flag.” The senior pusine judge mentioned that Pakistan’s population comprises 96% Muslims, 1.6% Hindus and Christians each, and one per cent Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians.

He lamented that the country ranked at the bottom of the religious segment in the Freedoms House Report by the European Union in 2023.

“It was observed that despite prosecutorial religious freedom guarantees, religious minorities have not been provided an effective safeguard against discriminatory legislation, social prejudice, and sectarian violence. Pakistan’s religious freedom conditions remain on a negative trajectory with religious minorities subject to frequent attacks and threats including the accusation of blasphemy, targeted killings, lynching, mob violence, forced conversions, desecration of houses of worship, and cemeteries,” the apex court judge said while quoting the report.

Justice Shah called for changing such situations and work according to the Constitution. He reiterated that Muslims and minorities have the same rights. “We need to protect them [minorities]. We need to come out positively and do something about it.” While mentioning a verse from the Holy Quran, he interpreted that the freedom of belief and religious faith should be a matter of personal conviction without coercion.

Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Senator Azam Nazir Tarar has expressed his aspiration for judges from minority communities to join Pakistan’s higher judiciary. Speaking at the Justice A.R. Cornelius Conference held at a local hotel on Saturday, he emphasised the importance of religious freedom and minority rights in Pakistan. The event was organised by the Bright Future Society and Implementation Minority Rights Forum Pakistan.

He highlighted that Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees complete religious freedom, aligning with Islamic teachings on the rights of minorities.

He lamented the decline in religious tolerance post-Afghan war but reiterated Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision of a united, tolerant society.  He mentioned ongoing efforts to establish a Minority Rights Commission and proposed reserving quotas for minority law officers and legal advisors.

He praised retired Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani for his landmark decisions benefiting minorities, and lauded Justice Cornelius for his legacy of equal justice.

Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah echoed Tarar’s sentiments, noting the Constitution’s protection of minority rights and advocating for the appointment of minority judges to the higher judiciary.

Speakers at the conference, including senior judges and legal experts, paid tribute to Justice Cornelius and discussed the constitutional protections for minorities. They highlighted Justice Cornelius’ impactful career and the 2014 Supreme Court guidelines under Justice Jillani aimed at safeguarding minority rights.

The conference concluded with the distribution of certificates to distinguished guests, attended by prominent figures including Supreme Court Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Dr. Syed Muhammad Anwar, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, and retired Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, among others.

------------

LONDON: Thousands of supporters of British anti-Islam campaigner Tommy Robinson demonstrated in central London on Saturday, chanting anti-Muslim slogans, The Independent reported.

English actor and broadcaster Laurence Fox and Robinson, one of the UK’s most prominent far-right activists, were spotted leading the protest as crowds behind them chanted: “We want our country back.” Protesters carried a banner that read: “This is London, not Londonistan.”

Robinson said on stage: “This is what London should look like … We’re not going to be silenced any longer.” He thanked the Metropolitan Police for “staying out of our way.”

The Independent reported that nine pro-Palestinian activists from Youth Demand, holding a stationary counter-protest nearby, were arrested.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson posted on X: “Nine Youth Demand protesters were arrested for breaching Public Order Act conditions not to leave the pavement.”

Nick Lowles, CEO of Hope Not Hate, a UK-based advocacy group that campaigns against racism, said ahead of the demonstration: “We have unearthed shocking messages from hooligan chat groups where people are threatening to attack people of color, pro-Palestine demonstrators and even the police.”

Commander Louise Puddefoot said: “For some in London, in particular our Muslim communities, comments made by those associated with this event will … cause fear and uncertainty.

“All Londoners have a right to feel and be safe in their city, and we will take a zero tolerance approach to any racially or religiously motivated hate crime we become aware of.”

Iran urges Islamic states to seize capacities to support Gaza

Jun 2, 2024

BagheriKani made the remarks in a telephone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister HakanFidan.

During the phone conversation, the two Iranian and Turkish top diplomats discussed a range of regional issues including the brutal Israeli war in the besieged Gaza Strip, as well as the bilateral relations between Tehran and Ankara.

Hailing the Turkish government and nation over sympathizing with Iran over the tragic passing away of the country's president and foreign minister, BagheriKani thanked Fidan for attending the farewell ceremony of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Referring to the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers of eight developing Islamic countries in Istanbul, he expressed hope that consultations between Iran and Turkey on issues of mutual interest would be held on the sidelines of this meeting.

Touching upon the Israeli regime's genocidal war on Gaza, the top Iranian diplomat stressed that the cooperation of Islamic countries would create an important and effective capacity to support the oppressed people of Gaza.

Fidan, for his part, said that the proposal of the Islamic Republic of Iran to hold an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is very valuable.

The Zionist regime has besieged Gaza with the aim of destroying the Palestinian people, and all capacities must be used to prevent the continuation of the crime against humanity and the Zionist genocide, he added.

Polarisation Of Muslim Votes Likely To Block BJP’s Bengal LS Target

By Tanmay Chatterjee

Jun 01, 2024

According to surveys done by all parties, Muslim voters play a decisive role in at least 120 of Bengal’s 294 assembly seats, of which BJP could win only 75 in 2021

Kolkata: Seventeen months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national executive meet in Delhi that his party should reach out to Muslims, especially those from the economically backward strata, the minority community may have emerged as a major hindrance to the saffron camp’s target of winning 30 of Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats in the seven-phase elections, feel stakeholders and experts.

The primary reason, they say, is the communal overtones in the campaign speeches BJP leaders delivered in Bengal, especially after the first three phases covering the north Bengal region’s eight seats of which BJP won seven in 2019.

Although the BJP set a record in Bengal five years ago by winning 18 seats, its victory march in the south Bengal region was confined to regions with a high number of tribal voters or a sizeable population of Hindu Dalits many of whom came from Bangladesh as refugees. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was enforced in March, was promised to this section by the BJP in 2019.

Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson and chief minister Mamata Banerjee has projected CAA as a threat to both Hindus and Muslims saying it is a precursor to enforcement of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which left 1.9 million Hindus in jeopardy in BJP-ruled Assam in 2018 and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on which Uttarakhand passed a law in February.

The second reason, cited as a catalyst in the polarisation process, is the Calcutta high court’s May 22 order which cancelled Other Backward Class (OBC) status awarded to 77 Muslim communities by the state government.

“This is clear from the chain of events that led to the classification of the 77 classes as OBCs and their inclusion to be treated as a vote bank,” the order, which came three days before the sixth phase of polling, said.

Incredible, Colourful Modern Madina MosqueSet To Be Built In Cardiff

By Ted Peskett

02-06-2024

Madina Mosque in Lucas Street in Cathays is a temporary cabin-like building which doubles up as a community centre and is surrounded by a car park. Not for much longer.

Plans for a new mosque, which Cardiff Council's planning committee is set to approve on Thursday, June 6, propose a far larger structure that would take up nearly the whole of the current site. The ground floor would consist of a cafe, library and gym and the first floor, a male and female prayer hall and Wudu facilities, which is the washing area.

An artist's impression of the proposed new mosque shows it to have a flat roof with two domes, which would be made out of fibreglass, on top. A planning application for the current temporary structure on site was made in 2015 and worshippers have been using it as a mosque and community centre for years. Italy warns against 'rash' moves over arms to Ukraine

Jun 2, 2024

ROME: Italy's foreign minister repeated his opposition Saturday to Ukraine using Italian weapons inside Russia, warning of a "delicate" situation where "rash" moves must be avoided.

Support is growing among NATO allies for allowing Ukraine to use Western-donated weapons to strike inside Russian territory -- but Rome, a founding member of the alliance, remains opposed.

"It is a very delicate moment, we must not make false steps" and must avoid "rash steps and declarations", Antonio Tajani told a meeting in Rapallo, northwest Italy, according to the AGI and ANSA news agencies.

He added that "even the US has not authorised the indiscriminate use of its weapons against Russia, but only to strike a base from where the drones depart. They too are very cautious", AGI reported.

Sacked chairman spills the beans on corruption in ACE

Imtiaz Ali

June 2, 2024

KARACHI: A senior government official, who has recently been removed by the provincial government from the chairmanship of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), has alleged that a “system of corruption” in the provincial anti-graft watchdog was being run by a “private person” and that he was sacked only because he refused to become part of the corrupt system.

On May 31, the Sindh government had transferred ACE chairman Farhat Junejo, a BS-21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, and directed him to report to Service, General Administration and Coordination department with immediate effect.

While the Sindh government did not give any reason for his removal, Mr Junejo, who was posted as the ACE chairman around two months ago, believed that the decision was taken since he was being seen as a “threat to the corruption system”.

In a letter sent to Sindh Enquiries and Anti-corruption Minister Mohammad Bux Mahar, Mr Junejo alleged that “a system of corruption is extracting Rs60-70 million on a monthly basis from different government departments / organisations”.

Iran's hard-line former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registers for June 28 election

By JON GAMBRELL

June 2, 2024

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Iran's hard-line former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registered Sunday as a possible candidate for the presidential election, seeking to regain the country's top political position after a helicopter crash killed the nation's president.

The populist former leader's registration puts pressure on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In office, Ahmadinejad openly challenged the 85-year-old cleric, and his attempt to run in 2021 was barred by authorities.

The firebrand, Holocaust-questioning politician’s return comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, its arming of Russia in its war on Ukraine and its wide-reaching crackdowns on dissent. Meanwhile, Iran's support of militia proxy forces throughout the wider Mideast have been in increased focus as Yemen's Houthi rebels attack ships in the Red Sea over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Ahmadinejad is the most prominent candidate to register so far. Speaking after his registration, he vowed to seek “constructive engagement” with the world and improved economic relations with all nations.

ARAB NEWS

June 02, 202

JEDDAH: Sheikh AimaDiakite, president of the Superior Council of Imams of Mosques and Islamic Affairs in Ivory Coast, praised the services and facilities provided by the Makkah Route Initiative.

The Makkah Route Initiative has developed procedures for Ivorian and other pilgrims and worked on overcoming difficulties and obstacles to alleviate the hardship of Hajj, Diakite told the Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi Arabia launched the initiative in 2019 to help Hajj pilgrims from seven countries — Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkiye and Ivory Coast — with their visa, customs and passport requirements.

Pilgrims arriving from Jordan and Palestine also expressed gratitude to the Saudi government for organizing the Hajj process and caring for pilgrims.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Public Security has begun imposing penalties on pilgrims violating Hajj regulations and instructions by undertaking a pilgrimage without a permit.

The areas covered by the no-permit, no-Hajj policy include the city of Makkah, the central area, the holy sites, the Haramain train station, security checkpoints, screening centers and temporary security checkpoints, according to a report from Saudi Press Agency.

Any individual — whether citizen, resident, or visitor — found violating Hajj regulations will be fined 10,000 Saudi riyals ($2,666). Non-citizens will be deported to their home country and banned from re-entering the Kingdom for a specified period.

The Public Security also said repeat offenders would have their fines doubled, as the agency stressed the importance of adhering to Hajj regulations and instructions to ensure pilgrims can perform rituals safely and peacefully.

At Shangri-La Dialogue, defence minister says Malaysia supports call for ceasefire, champions Palestinian independence

02 Jun 2024

SINGAPORE, June 2 — Malaysia welcomes and supports any proposal aimed at achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict, including the recently announced three-stage plan by US President Joe Biden, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD) plenary session, the minister stated that Malaysia firmly believes Palestinians must be granted the full right to self-determination and dignity, national independence and sovereignty, and the right to freedom of movement.

“In line with the obligations under the Genocide Convention, Israel must immediately halt its military offensive and any other action in Rafah,” he said at the session titled Re-Imagining Solutions for Regional Stability, on Sunday.

Mohamed Khaled also suggested that the SLD, Asia’s premier defence summit hosted by Singapore since 2002, invite a representative from Palestine for inclusion and constructive dialogue.

“We should not be forced to take sides and will not take sides. Regardless, Malaysia’s position on any act to escalate conflicts in the region remains unchanged. I reiterate that being non-aligned is the best way possible while expanding multi-layered cooperation even with conflicting parties,” he said.

Indonesia's Islamic economy must become the world's best: Minister

June 2, 2024

Indonesia needs to make even greater efforts to boost its Islamic economy, pushing it to emerge at the top spot globally, Coordinating Economic Minister AirlanggaHartarto affirmed.

Speaking at an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Bogor, West Java, on Saturday (June 1), he cited the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) 2023 report showing that Indonesia's Islamic economy came in third position, trailing second-ranked Saudi Arabia and first-ranked Malaysia.

"This does not make sense, considering our population of 280 million. Meanwhile, the populations of Malaysia and Saudi may be equal or less compared to that of West Java. Hence, we need to boost our Islamic economy to make it the world's number 1," he remarked.

Hartarto noted that the ecosystem of Islamic economy and finance in Indonesia has been showing developments, especially in the fields of Islamic investment, halal food and beverages, modest fashion, pharmacy, cosmetics, and Muslim-friendly tourism.

South Africa Election Ends Three Decades Of ANC Dominance

Jun 2, 2024

JOHANNESBURG: South Africans angry at joblessness, inequality and power shortages have slashed support for the African National Congress (ANC) to 40% in this week's election, ending three decades of dominance by the party that freed the country from apartheid.

A dramatically weakened mandate for the legacy party of Nelson Mandela, down from the 57.5% it got in the previous 2019 parliamentary election, means the ANC must share power with a rival in order to keep it - an unprecedented prospect.

"We can talk to everybody and anybody," GwedeMantashe, the ANC chair and current mines and energy minister, told reporters in comments carried by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), dodging a question about who the party was discussing a possible coalition deal with.

Vote tallying from Wednesday's poll was entering its final stages on Saturday, with results from 99.53% of polling stations giving the ANC 40.21%.

The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), had 21.80%, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), a new party led by former president Jacob Zuma, managed to grab 14.60%, while the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), led by former ANC youth leader Julius Malema, got 9.48%.

Minimum wage strike: Labour seeks Tinubu’s intervention as FG says economy under threat

2nd June 2024

Organised Labour has urged President Bola Tinubu to personally intervene in the ongoing negotiation over minimum wage to avert the indefinite strike action scheduled to start on Monday.

On Tuesday, May 28, talks between the Federal Government and Organised Labour broke down after the government and the Organised Private Sector raised their offers to N60,000.

The government added N3,000 to its initial offer of N57,000 proposed last week, making the total figure N60,000. It was dismissed by labour at the meeting.

Several impeccable sources from both the Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH, stressed that the Federal Government and the organised private sector should not expect labour to accept anything less than a six-digit offer.

The unions said the government was not serious about the negotiations, adding that the shift from N48,000 to N57,000 was too meagre to be considered as ‘shifting grounds’.

They noted that the promise made by President Bola Tinubu when he became President and on Workers’ Day was that the Federal Government would pay a living wage, adding that N57,000 did not fall into that category.

On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress declared an indefinite nationwide strike, starting on Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.

The President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, announced that the strike followed failed negotiations between the government and organised labour.

Despite the government’s final offer of N60,000, which included a recent increase from an initial N57,000, the labour unions found the proposal insufficient.

At the meeting, labour revised its demand, reducing it by N3,000 from the initial N497,000 proposed last week, setting the new proposal at N494,000.

Nigeria volatile, filled with suffering – Obasanjo

By Godfrey George

2nd June 2024

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, said on Saturday that Nigeria was becoming more volatile, uncertain and complex.

He said these in Lagos at the Africa Methodist Council Heads of Conference Summit and Women’s Movement Leadership Summit, where he was the Chairman of the public lecture.

The lecture’s topic, presented by the General Secretary, World Methodist Council, Bishop Ivan Abrahams, was, ‘Leadership in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous World’.

“How do we re-evaluate the world? That is what I believe we have to do in our re-evaluating the world. What do we do? Jesus Christ himself told us that in this world, we would have trouble.

“I will give you two points. Wake up! We need a new generation of leaders; moral leaders, transformational leaders, and servant leaders.

Trump has few ways to overturn his conviction

Jun 2, 2024

NEW YORK: "This is long from over," Donald Trump, the former president and current felon, declared Thursday, moments after a Manhattan jury convicted him on 34 counts of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is banking on the jury not having the final word on the case. He has already outlined a plan to appeal a verdict that Friday he labelled "a scam."

But even if the former - and possibly future - president could persuade voters to ignore his conviction, the appellate courts might not be so sympathetic. Several legal experts cast doubt on his chances of success and noted that the case could take years to snake through the courts, all but ensuring he will still be a felon when voters head to the polls in Nov. And so, after a five-year investigation and a seven-week trial, Trump's New York legal odyssey is only beginning.

The former president's supporters are calling on the US Supreme Court to intervene, though that is highly unlikely. In a more likely appeal to a New York court, Trump would have avenues to attack the conviction, the experts said, but far fewer than he has claimed. The experts noted that the judge, whose rulings helped shape the case, stripped some of the prosecution's most precarious arguments and evidence from the trial.

North Korea Sends Hundreds of More Trash-Carrying Balloons to South Korea

June 2, 2024

SEOUL, South Korea—North Korea launched hundreds of more trash-carrying balloons toward the South after a similar campaign a few days earlier, according to South Korea’s military, in what Pyongyang calls retaliation for activists flying anti-North Korean leaflets across the border.

Between Saturday night and Sunday morning, about 600 balloons flown from North Korea have been found in various parts of South Korea. The balloons carried cigarette butts, scraps of cloth, waste paper, and vinyl, but no dangerous substances were included, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Sunday.

The trash from a balloon presumably sent by North Korea, is seen behind police tape in Incheon, South Korea, on June 2, 2024. (Im Sun-suk/Yonhap via AP)

The military advised people to beware of falling objects and not to touch objects suspected to be from North Korea but report them to military or police offices instead. There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

WHO Member Countries Approve Steps to Bolster Health Regulations to Better Brace for Pandemics

June 1, 2024

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization said member countries on Saturday approved new steps to improve global preparedness for and response to pandemics like COVID-19 and mpox, and set a new deadline for agreeing on a broader treaty.

Countries agreed by consensus to amend the International Health Regulations, which were last changed in 2005, such as by defining the term “pandemic emergency” and helping developing countries to gain better access to financing and medical products, WHO said.

The move came as the U.N. agency ended its six-day World Health Assembly this year, after plans to adopt a more sweeping pandemic “treaty” at the meeting was shelved largely over disagreements between developing countries and richer ones about better sharing of technology and the pathogens that trigger outbreaks.

“The success of the IHR amendments demonstrates that in our divided and divisive world, countries can still come together to find common cause and common ground,” Director-General TedrosAdhanomGhebreyesus said.
