Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Iran thanked many countries, including India, for their “support and solidarity” during its missile response to the US and Israel. A note, which read “thank you people of India”, was shared by the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Mumbai on its X handle.

"Gratitude from Iran’s Aerospace Force to the people of #Spain, #Pakistan, #India, and #Germany for their support and solidarity; especially during the 83rd wave of missile response to the US and #Israel," the post read.

What are the 83rd waves of Iranian strikes?

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it launched the 83rd wave of Operation True Promise 4 early Friday, targeting key American and Israeli military installations across the region, according to Press TV.

Reported targets included storage tanks and an oil depot in Ashdod, a military personnel site in the Modi'in settlement, and a US military information exchange centre in the region.

The IRGC also struck American military bases at Al-Dhafra and Al-Udeiri, along with maintenance and storage hangars for transport aircraft and drones at Ali Al-Salem Air Base, the report said.

Additional targets included fuel tanks for US jets and fighter aircraft, as well as a maintenance and repair hangar for the Patriot missile system at Sheikh Isa Base.

According to the IRGC statement cited by Press TV, the strikes involved a mix of long-range and medium-range systems, including solid and liquid fuel missiles, precision-strike and multi-warhead capabilities, as well as suicide and loitering drones.

These developments come despite US President Donald Trump signalling a possible de-escalation, stating that Iran had sought a seven-day pause on American strikes targeting its energy infrastructure. He said the window was extended to 10 days, until April 6, even as strikes by US-Israel forces continue.

US envoy Witkoff says ‘strong signs’ Tehran ready to negotiate

March 27, 2026

------------

President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff told a cabinet meeting earlier of “strong signs” that Tehran was ready to negotiate, confirming publicly for the first time that Washington had passed a 15-point “action list” to Tehran through Pakistani officials.

“We will see where things lead, and if we can convince Iran that this is the inflection point with no good alternatives for them, other than more death and destruction,” Witkoff said.

Pakistan is relaying messages between the United States and Iran as part of indirect talks to end the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Washington had shared a 15-point proposal with Tehran, which is currently under consideration by Iranian authorities.

Among those demands concern Iran’s nuclear program, including ‘no chance’ on weaponizing it, the decommissioning of the Fordow nuclear facility, no further enrichment, a ban on stockpiling nuclear material and turning over enriched uranium to the US.

Saudi crown prince, Ukraine president discuss regional crisis

March 26, 2026

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky. (SPA)

------------

RIYADH: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky paid a surprise visit to Saudi Arabia on Thursday as the Middle East war sparks interest from the Gulf states in Ukrainian air defense technology.

He met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, where they discussed regional escalation and the Ukraine crisis, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

They also discussed Ukraine’s war with Russia, the SPA reported.

“Arrived in Saudi Arabia. Important meetings are scheduled,” Zelensky had posted on social media before his meeting with the crown prince. “We appreciate the support and support those who are ready to work with us to ensure security.”

The two countries were expected to sign an agreement on “security cooperation — in particular, the protection of the skies” a senior official told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Kyiv has sought to leverage its expertise in downing Russian drones to help Gulf nations, which are being attacked with the same Iranian-designed Shahed drones that Russia fires on Ukraine.

Zelensky has said that more than 200 Ukrainian anti-drone experts have been deployed to several countries in the Middle East since the war began on Feb. 28.

Kyiv is touting its mix of cheap drone interceptors, electronic jamming tools and anti-aircraft guns as an effective air defense tool to Shahed Russian drones.

Ukraine has proposed swapping its interceptors for the more expensive air-defense missiles that Gulf countries are currently using to down Iranian drones. Kyiv argues it needs more of them to fend off Russian missile attacks.

Last year, Saudi Arabia also hosted US officials for separate talks with Ukrainian and Russian delegations in a bid to find an end to the four-year war triggered by Moscow’s February 2022 invasion.

French court hands Islam scholar Tariq Ramadan 18-year jail term for rape

Paul Kirby

27 MARCH 2026

Swiss national Tariq Ramadan has said he wants a new trial in France

-----------

A court in Paris has sentenced prominent Islam scholar Tariq Ramadan to 18 years in jail for raping three women, two years after he was given a jail term for a separate rape offence in Switzerland.

The French rape case unfolded in 2017, when two of the three women came forward during the Me Too campaign against sexual abuse and harassment.

Ramadan, a 63-year-old former professor of Islamic studies at St Antony's College in Oxford, did not attend the trial in Paris, although he has always denied the charges.

His lawyers said he was being treated in the Swiss city of Geneva for multiple sclerosis and condemned the trial as a farce.

Judge Corinne Goetzmann told the court that a warrant had been issued for Ramadan's arrest, however Switzerland does not have an extradition treaty with its neighbour.

Ramadan is also facing a permanent ban from French territory.

The court ruled that the 18-year jail term was justified by the "extreme seriousness of the acts",

"Consenting to sex does not imply consenting to any sexual act whatsoever," the judge said.

Leaving court, one of the three women involved in the case, Henda Ayari, told reporters that the judges had believed her, and she spoke of "nine years of suffering and struggle" since she had first come forward to make a complaint.

In 2017 she told French TV that the scholar had "literally pounced on me like a wild animal" in a hotel room in 2012.

She told reporters on Wednesday that she had been thinking about all the other victims: "of the victims who had the courage to file a complaint like me, but also of those who could not summon up the strength, and those who had withdrawn their complaint because of threats and reprisals."

The second woman to come forward in France accused Ramadan of raping in her in a hotel in Lyon in 2009, whereas the Swiss case involved a woman who said he had raped her in a Geneva hotel in 2008.

Meanwhile, Tariq Ramadan has himself reacted to the sentence, calling for a "new trial, a trial with both parties present".

"I will not let this decision stand," he told Le Parisien newspaper. Insisting that it was his health that had stopped him from coming to Paris, Ramadan said if he had not wanted to attend, he would have not have assembled a legal team.

Tariq Ramadan is the grandson of Hassan al-Banna, who founded the Muslim Brotherhood.

He has long said the allegations against him are part of a campaign of slander. He told Le Parisien that he was the victim of a political bid "to remove a Muslim intellectual".

It is difficult to see how a second trial could take place without him agreeing to pre-trial detention in France, seeing that he is now subject to an arrest warrant.

Did CIA tell Donald Trump Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is gay? What US President claimed

Mar 27, 2026

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had informed him that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was gay.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump said, “Well, they did say that, but I don’t know if it was only them,” when asked about the claim. He added, “I think a lot of people are saying that,” and said it put the leader off to a “bad start” in Iran, where homosexuality is illegal.

His remarks come days after reports suggested that US intelligence had briefed him on the issue. According to earlier media reports, Trump had reacted with surprise during the briefing.

Citing sources, The New York Post reported that Trump reacted with visible astonishment and laughed during the intelligence briefing.

Others in the room also reportedly found it “hilarious” and joined the president’s reaction, while one senior intelligence official had "not stopped laughing about it for days.”

The intelligence inputs also reportedly suggested Mojtaba had a long-term sexual relationship with his childhood tutor. It also said the relationship was with someone who had earlier worked for the Khamenei family and made “aggressive” sexual advances towards men caring for him.

Some details about Mojtaba Khamenei’s personal life had surfaced earlier and were cited as adding to the allegations. A classified US diplomatic cable from 2008, later published by WikiLeaks, said he had travelled to the United Kingdom for treatment related to impotence.

The State Department file said Mojtaba married “relatively late in life” around age 30, “reportedly due to an impotency problem treated and eventually resolved during three extended visits to the UK, at Wellington and Cromwell Hospitals, London.”

Promoting Islamic affairs remains one of my priorities – Sokoto gov

March 26, 2026

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, has said the promotion of Islamic affairs remains a top priority of his administration.

The governor stated this while receiving members of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah from Kaduna and Jos during separate Sallah homage visits.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by his Director-General of Media and Publicity, Abubakar Bawa.

Aliyu announced that the state government would henceforth take full responsibility for supporting the annual Ramadan Tafseer organised by Izala groups in the state.

The governor stated that the decision to support the Tafseer from next year was informed by the fact that the “promotion of Islamic affairs remains one of the top priorities of his administration.”

“I don’t think it is appropriate for us in Sokoto to allow you to continue raising appeal funds every year to conduct the Ramadan Tafseer,” the governor said.

“We will henceforth set up a committee to assess your financial requirements for the conduct of the Tafseer, with a view to possible government intervention,” he added.

The governor commended the groups for their role in promoting Islamic ideals and Da’awah, as well as the orderly conduct of this year’s Ramadan Tafseer.

“I appeal to our Islamic preachers to focus more on teaching Muslims the basic tenets of Islam so that people will learn how to properly worship their Creator,” he said.

Aliyu also pledged continued support for religious activities, noting that the government would assist Islamic bodies in organising and attending seminars and conferences both within and outside Nigeria.

He added that the state would prioritise the construction and renovation of Islamiyya schools, as well as the improvement of cemeteries.

In their separate remarks, leaders of the Izala groups from Jos and Kaduna commended the governor for his support for Islamic affairs, noting that several mosques had been built and renovated under his administration.

They also lauded the support extended to Imams, Deputy Imams, Mu’azzins, and Islamic preachers across the state, describing it as crucial to effective religious service delivery.

The governor also received members of the 23 Local Government Secretaries Forum led by Shehu Goronyo.

Anwar convenes meeting of all state leaders over US-Iran crisis

By Muhammad Yusry

27 Mar 2026

SHAH ALAM, March 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today that he will convene a meeting with all state leaders next week to ensure a coordinated national response to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers here, Anwar said the meeting aims to brief the group on the measures being considered by the federal government, ensuring participation from all states, regardless of political affiliation.

“God willing, next week I will convene all the menteri besar, the premier and the chief ministers to brief them so that all states, regardless of party affiliation, can participate together with the government, including the opposition,” he said.

The prime minister added that he plans to extend these briefings to leaders from all political parties to foster a unified national approach.

“I am also planning to call in party leaders from all parties, if possible, to discuss and to hear the briefing directly from the National Security Council and the Economic Action Council, as well as the steps that we must take together,” he said.

While underscoring the seriousness of the situation, Anwar noted that Malaysia remains in a relatively stable position compared to many of its neighbours.

Yesterday, the government adjusted the monthly BUDI95 allocation to 200L per indvidual as part of interim measures in response to the US-Iran war, and maintained the price ceiling at RM1.99/L when unsubsidised RON95 has risen to RM3.87/L.

“We give thanks to God that the challenges we are facing are not as complex as those encountered by many neighbouring countries.

“There has been no rationing, nor any sharp increase in RON95 prices, for example,” he said.

Defending Afghanistan’s Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity Shared Responsibility, Mujahid Says

March 26, 2026

KABUL: Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, has emphasized that defending Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is a shared responsibility, underscoring the role of national forces in safeguarding the country.

In an audiotape, Mujahid stated that Afghanistan has not initiated conflict and has maintained a defensive posture, with Islamic Emirate forces focused on protecting the country’s borders and responding to threats.

He noted that proposals put forward by religious scholars from Afghanistan and Pakistan aimed at reducing tensions are largely directed toward Pakistan’s military authorities, calling for steps to prevent further escalation.

Mujahid reiterated that Afghan forces have consistently fulfilled their duty to defend the nation, stressing that preserving territorial integrity remains a collective obligation.

His comments come amid renewed calls by religious scholars from the Pakistani Military Regime for a permanent ceasefire to ease tensions and promote stability between Kabul and Islamabad.

‘No title, no right’: Allahabad High Court upholds eviction of Lucknow mosque

Ashish Shaji

Mar 27, 2026

The Allahabad High Court recently dismissed a plea against eviction order passed in connection with a mosque constructed on gram sabha land in Bakshi-Ka-Talab, Lucknow while partially granting relief by setting aside a monetary penalty imposed on the petitioners.

Justice Alok Mathur passed the order on a plea filed by one Shahban and others who had challenged orders passed by district authorities directing eviction and imposing a penalty of Rs 36,000 for allegedly constructing a mosque on the subject land.

“Petitioners were unable to demonstrate that they had any right, title, or interest in the said land,” the court noted on March 25.

Justice Alok Mathur passed the order on a plea filed by one Shahban. Justice Alok Mathur passed the order on a plea filed by one Shahban.

‘Rules followed’

The enquiry was conducted by the revenue officials and they had submitted their report, providing all the necessary ingredients regarding the location of the legal encroachment pursuant to which notice was given to the petitioners, providing therein the extent of encroachment, area of encroachment etc. and asking the petitioners to submit their reply.

The reply was furnished to the Assistant Collector, who did not find that there was any justification given by the petitioners for occupation of the land, which was recorded as a “Khalihan” and hence a Gram Sabha land.

As the petitioners were unable to demonstrate that they had any right, title, or interest in the said land, the Assistant Collector held that the reply was unsatisfactory and passed orders for eviction and imposition of a penalty.

Accordingly, from the perusal of the aforesaid material, it is evident that the respondents have followed the Rules prescribed under Rule 66 and 67 of the Revenue Code Rules, and it cannot be said that the impugned order was passed in violation of the said Rules.

With regard to the imposition of penalty, there was no material to link the petitioners to either construction or occupation of the Mosque; the same cannot be sustained and is accordingly set aside.

Eviction order

Proceedings were initiated against the petitioners over alleged encroachment on Gram Sabha land by building a mosque.

The petitioners appeared before the Tehsildar and filed their objections stating that they had not constructed a mosque on the Gram Sabha land.

They stated that the existing mosque had been constructed 60 years before to facilitate the persons following Islam and further prayed for setting aside the notice.

The Tehsildar after considering the objections raised by the petitioners rejected the same holding that the land on which the mosque was existing is recorded as “Khalihan” and therefore is a land owned by the Gram Sabha.

It was held by the Tehsildar that the petitioner did not have any right interest or title in the disputed land and therefore passed orders for eviction and imposition of penalty to the tune of Rs 36,000.

The petitioners, being aggrieved by the order, filed an appeal before the Additional District Magistrate (Judicial) Lucknow.

The Additional District Magistrate after considering the entire material on record noted that the petitioners were not able to demonstrate that they had any right, interest or title in the disputed property as the same was undisputedly recorded as Gram Sabha land.

The Additional District Magistrate, accordingly, did not find any reason for interfering with the order passed by the Tehsildar and accordingly rejected the appeal.

Aggrieved by this order, the petitioners moved the high court.

The petitioners had argued that due opportunity of hearing was denied to the petitioner and the statement of the Lekhpal was never recorded and neither was any evidence led by the State.

It was further contended that the petitioners were not permitted to cross examine any of the witnesses for the State.

Standing counsel for the state opposed the plea and submitted that the procedure prescribed under Rules 66 and 67 of the U.P. Revenue Code Rules were followed.

3 months after Bajrang Dal protest, ‘Mohammad’ Deepak and ‘Baba’ Ahmed struggle to move on

Aiswarya Raj

Mar 27, 2026

“People might act out in different ways, but it is better to suffer than be the aggressor. Even when the group shouted at me, I did not utter a word,” says Vakeel Ahmed, before he is seized by a bout of severe tremors.

It’s been three months since Bajrang Dal activists gathered in front of his garment store in Kotdwar in Pauri Garhwal district, heckling him for having ‘Baba’ in his shop’s name. The owner of a gym in the same town, Deepak, who happened to be nearby and took on the mob, has been feted and attacked in equal measure – and seen his business take a hit.

As he sits in his shop that sees barely any customers, Ahmed says his loss is more intimate. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease five years ago, the 68-year-old’s nervous system has deteriorated since the Republic Day incident, curtailing his movement.

As two women approach the shop for clothes, Ahmed struggles to pull out a suit fabric that they want. “My son is in Delhi and will return tomorrow. Why don’t you come then?” he says, and the women leave.

Still, every day, Ahmed arrives at the shop at 9 am and keeps it open till late evening. “I can’t stand being at home,” he says. “The doctor has advised me not to stay cooped up in a room. When I come here, people drop by, and I feel better.”

Over the years, business has reduced to a bare minimum, and now it is basically parents who come for school uniforms. “People travel to Najibabad (27 km away) for clothes these days… Eid does not bring many customers either,” Ahmed says, adding that they make do with his meagre income and the earnings of his younger son Mohsin, who runs a mobile repair shop. His elder son Shoaib runs the garment store with him.

The family, including Ahmed and his wife, his two sons and their wives, and his four grandchildren, lives barely 500 metres away from the shop.

Forty years ago, when he started the shop, the name ‘Baba’ was an easy choice, Ahmed says. “It is in the names of many saints; it is an affectionate term for children and the elderly; and it is also how we respectfully address Babasaheb Ambedkar. We have equal rights, thanks to him.”

That is why, when the Bajrang Dal confronted him that day and heckled him and Shoaib, he was surprised. He could not reason with them, Ahmed says.

This was when Deepak stepped up. In a video that went viral, he confronted the Bajrang Dal men, and when asked his name, replied, “Mohammad Deepak”.

Ahmed says he was deeply moved by what Deepak did, that he had never even spoken to him before that day. “Kabhi kabhar milte thai. Woh baat nahi karte hain magar lambe-chaude hain na, koi bhi dekh ke pehchan lega (I would see him around town. He didn’t talk much, but he is tall, big, no one could miss him). When he came to my rescue, I was surprised. All these years, people in the market would join us in good times. When this happened, no one stood by us.”

Later, Ahmed says, there were many who came up to him, asking “why we didn’t inform them”. Muslims are a small minority in Kotdwar sub-district, about 9.26% of the population as per the 2011 Census. “But that day, it was Deepak who came, despite not knowing me, and stopped the men.”

On January 31, Bajrang Dal activists paid a repeat visit, this time raising slogans outside both Ahmed’s store and Deepak’s gym. Five FIRs have been filed since, including one against Deepak and his friend Vijay Rawat, who was present with him. Last week, a petition by Deepak and Rawat to quash the FIR against them was rejected by the Uttarakhand High Court.

Ahmed says that after the second incident, “I visited Deepak’s gym with my son and told him how grateful I was for what he did.”

At around 5.30 pm on a Wednesday, at Deepak’s Hulk Gym, there are about five people exercising. From 150-200 clients daily, the numbers have dropped to 45. Sitting in a corner, Deepak, 38, says business has started picking up slowly. “Right after the incident, the clientele was down to 15.”

He can understand why people are keeping away, Deepak adds. “On January 31, a few people got inside the gym, scaring women who were working out. Later, police were stationed round the clock outside for security. This affected footfall.”

The aid by many following the incident, including several Supreme Court Senior Advocates, has helped. They signed up for annual memberships of Rs 10,000 each, and transferred the same to locals. “I have 40 such clients now. It’s a huge relief,” says Deepak.

He also cherishes the meeting he and Rawat had on February 23 with senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “I felt seen and understood. He also spoke to my family over the phone,” Deepak says, adding, “Had it been a BJP leader too, I would have been happy because it means they respect my values.”

Married, Deepak has a five-year-old daughter.

On those who question his declaration that his name was ‘Mohd Deepak’, he says: “I don’t have to prove to anyone that I am a Hindu. If you want to perceive me as a Muslim, go ahead, but I am human first. They call me ‘mullah’… Muslims have contributed to building this nation. These insults will only harm the country.”

Deepak also stands by his decision to confront the crowd. “Anyone can name their establishment as they choose. A mob does not have the right to barge in and order them to change it.”

As he speaks, a group of six men come in. “We are from Bijnor and wanted to meet you. Aap toh sher hain (You are a braveheart),” one of them says, requesting a photograph. Deepak agrees, without saying anything. But after they leave, he admits the validation is gratifying.

He particularly welcomes it after the High Court remarks. Hearing his petition against the FIR naming him and his friend, and seeking police protection, the court called it “nothing but an attempt to influence the investigation” and to “put pressure on the investigating agency”. “Has anyone laid a hand on you?” the court asked. It also asked Deepak to keep off social media.

Deepak fears the court’s observations will deter people from doing “the right thing”. He will challenge the order in the Supreme Court, he says. “I have never posted content hurting anyone’s sentiments. I have never intentionally harmed anyone. Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal and Hindu Raksha Dal activists are still levelling threats at me… but the censor is on me.”

Those working out at the gym, while refusing to identify themselves, say they agree with Deepak. One of them, who has been coming to Hulk Gym for three years, says right-wing outfits who hold influence in the town continue to try and get Deepak’s clients to stay away. “But there are some of us who support what he did,” says the 35-year-old.

Ahmed, who is not in touch with Deepak, says he has heard too that people are not coming to his gym. There have been some people who have come to Ahmed’s shop too to offer support, among them CPI(M) MP John Brittas, who bought a sari. Grateful for that, Ahmed hopes Deepak’s troubles get over soon. “I have been praying for him.”

Major ‘terror recruitment module’ working with LeT handler busted in raids across Kashmir: J-K Police

Naveed Iqbal

Mar 27, 2026

Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) on Thursday conducted extensive searches at multiple locations across the districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal and Shopian, leading to the busting of a “significant terrorist recruitment module”. CIK said the group was operating in coordination with handlers from across the Line of Control (LoC) and allegedly in connivance with a network based in Bangladesh.

The searches were carried out at 10 locations in the Kashmir Valley in pursuance of search warrants issued by the Court of the Special Judge designated under the NIA Act in Srinagar, and pertain to an FIR under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act registered at Police Station CIK.

“During the course of investigation, it has emerged that the module is being handled by a Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Shabir Ahmad Lone, originally hailing from Kangan, in Ganderbal district of Kashmir, who operates under multiple aliases including Raju and Zafar Saddique,” officials said.

The handler, police said, is highly radicalised and trained, having undergone structured arms training “Daura-e-Aam” and “Daura-e-Khas” in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

“Shabbir initially worked as an over-ground worker for a terrorist outfit in the late 1990s before joining terrorist organisation LeT in the early 2000s,” officials said. He is later said to have infiltrated into India via the Bangladesh border and has remained actively involved in terror-related activities, including conspiracy in high-profile attacks.

“After facing legal proceedings in India in the past, he exfiltrated to Bangladesh, where he has since been operating and coordinating terrorist recruitment and network expansion,” police said.

Investigations have also revealed that Lone is in close contact with the senior leadership of proscribed terrorist organisations and has played a key role in “reviving cross-border terror modules,” including those recently unearthed in different parts of the country.

He is currently believed to be based in Bangladesh and continues to direct operations through a network of associates and over-ground workers.

CIK, the counter-intelligence wing of J&K Police, had earlier arrested one of his close associates, Irfan Ahmad Wani, a 45-year-old individual from Heerpura, Shopian, who was working as a religious functionary at a local mosque.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused was in continuous contact with Lone and other terrorists based in Pakistan and Afghanistan through encrypted messaging platforms, officials said, adding, “He was actively engaged in facilitating recruitment, radicalisation, and logistical support at the local level.”

Jammu and Kashmir crime branch raids fake ‘journalist’ in Covid fraud case

Muzaffar Raina

27.03.26

Jammu and Kashmir police’s crime branch on Thursday conducted searches at multiple locations linked to a man claiming to be a journalist and an associate for alleged large-scale fraud dating back to the pandemic period.

Emaad Muzaffar Makhdoomi is believed to have had unbridled access to the top corridors of power after the 2019 scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. He is a vocal critic of separatists, Pakistan and many pro-Indian politicians in the Valley.

The economic offences wing (EOW) of the crime branch said in a statement that they conducted searches at multiple locations in Srinagar and Budgam “in connection with an alleged large-scale fraud case dating back to the Covid-19 pandemic”.

A spokesperson for the agency said searches were carried out at three locations as part of an investigation into an FIR registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act at the EOW police station in Srinagar.

The crime branch said the case was initiated following a complaint filed by M/S Sanjay Trading Company of Najafgarh, New Delhi, through its proprietor, Sanjay Kumar Sahu, alleging that two individuals from Srinagar duped the firm on the pretext of arranging medical supplies during the pandemic.

“As per the agency, the accused have been identified as Emaad Muzaffar Makhdoomi, also known as ‘Imran Shah’, a resident of Peerbagh, and Vikar Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Sanat Nagar,” the statement said.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the accused used fraudulent methods to obtain large sums of money. Officials said the funds included payments allegedly drawn from the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Anantnag. The accused also attempted to siphon off crores of rupees from Government Medical College, Srinagar,” it added.

According to the spokesperson, the suspects impersonated government officials to pose as delegates on special duty for supplies.

“The accused individuals impersonated government officials, posing as delegates and OSD (Supplies), and issued fake allotment orders of various departments and institutions. They further created fake email IDs of the complainant firm and opened fraudulent bank accounts in its name to divert payments,” the statement said.

On the basis of these findings, according to the crime branch, a formal case has been registered and an investigation set in motion.

“The house searches conducted today are aimed at securing further evidence, including digital records and financial documents. Further investigation is underway,” it said.

Last week, Makhdoomi had in a post on X said Pakistan’s authorities and agencies wanted to silence his voice. “If speaking the truth about terrorism unsettles Pakistan’s agencies, that only proves the truth is

hitting where it hurts. Sorry, Islamabad. Truth does not require your permission,” he said.

Makhdoomi’s social media bio describes him as an ex-principal correspondent of a Delhi-based news portal and an ex-consulting editor with a Srinagar-based newspaper.

Religion was not a consistent barrier for temple or mosque entry in India. It’s caste doing

ANIRUDH KANISETTI

26 March, 2026

Ahead of the 2026 Char Dham Yatra, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee has banned “non-Sanatanis” from all 48 temples under its jurisdiction. Its chairman framed the ban as “a matter of religious faith, not civil rights”. The BKTC claims that Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher-saint, established the system “since ancient times.”

There is no evidence Shankara did anything of the sort. In fact, beyond his philosophical contributions to Advaita, the guru is well known for his disputations with Buddhists and with rival Shaivite ascetics, particularly the skull-bearing Kapalikas. Islam had not even arrived in the Himalayas during his lifetime.

What the BKTC is really drawing on is a bigger idea: that “Abrahamic” religions are alien to, and incompatible with, Indian culture. This is a whitewashing of history. Over centuries, elite Indian Hindus and Muslims frequently shared spaces, ritual notions, and even some divinities. On the darker side, they also shared the idea that caste purity and political might, not religious affiliation, determined proximity to God.

What did religious identity mean?

While not the focus of this piece, I should point out that the historical record includes considerable sectarian violence between the “Sanatan” Buddhist, Jain and Hindu traditions. But to focus on the antagonism is to ignore a religious fluidity that they all shared with each other—and with Indian Islam.

In medieval South India, for example, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish archaeologically between a “Jain” site and a “Hindu” site. Leslie Orr, in Identity and Divinity: Boundary-Crossing Goddesses in Medieval South India, shows that many goddesses were worshipped in both Hindu and Jain traditions, the only difference being the name. The Jain goddess Padmavati, for example, was depicted riding a lion, just like Durga. Even ritual notions—daily ablutions, processions—were shared. Orr argues that the average person likely did not distinguish between the divinities of Sanskritic texts and the more familiar local mother goddesses.

Jainism scholar Michael Carrithers, in a landmark essay in Modern Asian Studies, used the concept of polytropy to describe this: Until recently, across the subcontinent, individuals and communities maintained multiple religious relationships simultaneously. Crucially, polytropy was hierarchical—one might offer most devotion to a village goddess or caste deity, while also, on occasion, worshipping a figure from another tradition entirely.

Vishnu’s Muslim wives

This is why, even after the military-political ascendancy of Islam in the subcontinent, there is an overwhelming amount of evidence of Hindus in ostensibly Muslim religious spaces, and vice versa. To be clear, Brahmanical sources frequently called Muslims mlecchas, barbarians. And Muslim theologians and court chroniclers demanded violence against infidels. However, the polytropic evidence is more concrete.

Mughal emperors (even Aurangzeb) routinely made endowments to Brahmins and to temples. Brajbhasha poetry on Krishna, composed by important Persian aristocrats, suggests that the religious boundary was indeed blurry. The great temple of Ranganatha at Srirangam was sacked by Malik Kafur, a Gujarati general of the Delhi Sultanate. But a female divinity called “Turk Princess”, Thulukka Nachiyar, has been integrated into the ritual calendar, ensuring at least a symbolic Muslim presence inside the temple. The same also goes for Tirumala, where Bibi Nancharamma is considered Venkateshwara’s consort—though the temple was extorted by the court of Arcot in the 18th century. Significantly, none of the legends of the Bibi and the Nachiyar claims they underwent a conversion ritual to become Hindu. They were accepted as the gods’ consorts through devotion alone.

Conversely, Hindu officials in the Mughal court, such as Chandar Bhan Brahman, described (in Persian, no less) the beauty of Shah Jahan’s Jama Masjid; Iranian travellers, such as Shustari in the 18th century, noted that many Hindus in Delhi constructed imambaras and even fought off other groups to defend Muharram processions.

Then, of course, there are dargahs, shrines to Sufi saints. Various scholars of Indian Islam have pointed out that dargah culture is a unique invention of the subcontinent, since it does not technically have a basis in the Qur’an or hadiths. By absorbing popular practices over the centuries, dargahs evolved into uniquely Indian spaces where worshippers across caste and religious boundaries worship and request divine intervention. As such, they have been criticised both by Hindutva activists and Islamist evangelists who insist on “pure” forms of devotion.

Who was kept out?

If religion was not a consistent boundary for temple or mosque entry, what was? Caste.

“Sanatan” histories, often with blatant disregard for Hindu texts, ignore how caste structured every aspect of temple practice—right down to the sanctum sanctorum. Take, for example, the Kamikāgama, a medieval Shaivite text. “Those who are born from Brahman’s mouth but without Śiva’s emission [i.e., Brahmans not of the five Adishaiva clans] are common Brahmans. They are not competent to offer worship for others. If by some mistake they do, king and country will be destroyed.” (Chapter 4, verses 7–9). Yet, socially, Smarta Brahmins—followers of Shankaracharya’s own Advaita tradition—claimed precedence over the Adishaiva Brahmins.

All evidence from premodern temples indicates that caste determined proximity to God. At Srirangam—the same temple that incorporated the Muslim princess Thulukka Nachiyar—inscriptions show that Brahmins cornered the most prestigious positions. In fact, in The Vaiṣṇava Community at Śrīragam, Leslie Orr argues that Srirangam was exceptional in that its temple committees were not solely Brahmin. Outside the temple walls, the picture was stark. Eleventh-century inscriptions at the great Brihadishvara temple in Thanjavur record Paraiyar—today classified as Scheduled Castes—living in segregated hamlets with separate cremation grounds. While the occasional Paraiyar rose to become temple patrons through military careers, by the 13th century, the term Paraiyar had become an insult. Temple compounds were walled, and “untouchables” were either entirely excluded or only allowed into the outermost courtyards on public occasions.

Middling groups gained temple access through wealth, prestige, and by adopting upper-caste norms—a process that anthropologist MN Srinivas termed Sanskritisation. Examples abound. As noted in an earlier edition of Thinking Medieval, in the 12th century, a group of artisans at Tiruvarur persuaded the local Brahmins to grant them the right to perform some Vedic rituals. In contrast, other sculptors, such as the Vishwakarmas, claimed the right to the sacred thread and ability to ritually invoke divinity into idols—but this was disputed by Brahmins over the centuries. Under the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century, Kaikkolar weavers secured the privileges of blowing the conch shell and riding palanquins on ritual occasions. Temples served as spaces for social mobility—but only by accepting the caste hierarchy.

By 1924, Dalits across much of India were systematically excluded from temples. In Travancore, they could not even walk on roads near temples. When activists marched on the roads near the Vaikom temple in Kottayam, they were arrested by the police—attracting national attention and the involvement of major Congress leaders, including MK Gandhi.  Gandhi promptly declared it a “Hindu affair” and snubbed help from other religious groups. Even with his political clout, though, progress was slow. It was only in 1936 that the Travancore Temple Entry Proclamation finally opened state-controlled temples to all Hindus regardless of caste.

How elites constructed communities

Islam in the subcontinent absorbed the same notions of ritual purity. The 1901 Bengal Census describes a three-fold caste system: Ashraafs (claiming foreign or upper-caste descent) on top, Ajlafs (middle-caste converts) in the middle, and Arzal—who, as Ambedkar noted, other Muslims would not associate with, and who were “forbidden to enter the mosque or to use the public burial ground.”

Colonial observers and Muslim reformers alike dismissed Bengali Muslim practice—including that of Muslims who still bore Hindu surnames like Chanda and Datta—as superstitious. As historian Asim Roy documents in The Islamic Syncretistic Tradition in Bengal, a “syncretistic Muslim’s total life-style lay naked before the puritan’s scanning eyes” and “covered him with a sense of shame and guilt.” Scholars of Indian Islam have suggested that this produces an equivalent of Sanskritisation: Ashrafisation, climbing the social ladder by adopting elite norms and shedding supposedly “un-Islamic” practices.

Similar processes were at work among Hindus. David Gordon White, in The Kiss of the Yogini, draws on British ethnographic surveys from Bihar in the early 1800s. Bengali pandits working for the British reported that the religion of a quarter of the population was “unworthy of note”—these were cults of village goddesses worshipped by the marginalised. Of the “worthy” remainder, barely a tenth identified as Vaishnava; over 40 per cent were Tantric or Shakta. Yet today, worship of Ram has become one of the most important indicators of “Sanatan” identity.

The key point is that both Brahmins and Ashraafs not only set the rules for social climbing but also imposed rigid categories on the masses through their proximity to British power. In the tense decades leading to Partition, Hindu and Muslim elites selectively absorbed the “lower” castes once excluded from sacred spaces—and set the terms on which they could be considered Hindu or Muslim at all. These were antagonistic terms that rapidly erased living memory of polytropy.

Erasing histories

The BKTC’s project does not recover ancient tradition. It forgets Thulukka Nachiyar, Vishnu’s Muslim wife at Srirangam. It forgets Vavar, whose mosque is the first stop on the road to Sabarimala. And it appropriates the memory of Shankaracharya to fit him into modern political agendas. And in projecting the “Sanatan” backwards, it imposes itself onto historical Buddhist, Jain, and local religious identities. And it does all this while systematically ignoring the way that caste structured, and continues to structure, religious spaces today.

There is a long precedent of elites using ritual spaces to establish who is politically “in” or “out”. The out-group can sometimes enter—through Sanskritisation, Ashrafisation, an affidavit or a sip of panchgavya. But only if they forget their history. The question that needs to be directed is not “who is allowed”. It should be “who holds the key?”

Faiths and fences: On reservation benefits, religious groups

March 27, 2026

The Supreme Court of India has reiterated a long-held, yet contested, principle of India’s anti-discrimination jurisprudence — that protections and special provisions for Scheduled Caste (SC) communities will be available only to those who practise Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism. The March 24 Court judgment arose from a Christian pastor who sought protections under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in Andhra Pradesh. The Court upheld a High Court decision that any member of the SC community who has converted out of the three religions specified in the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, issued under Article 341, ceases to be an SC member. The original definition of SC included only Hindus, but was extended to Sikhs (1956) and Buddhists (1990). India’s founding leaders, including first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, were clear that the extreme form of discrimination manifested in untouchability was unique to Hindu society. But political and social realities forced amendments later. SC communities began using religious conversion itself as an act of assertion and autonomy. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar himself led a mass conversion of SC members to Buddhism. Notably, he converted to Buddhism in 1956, the year when all SC communities practising the Sikh religion were brought under special provisions, including reservation.

There are theological and legal arguments for this distinction reiterated by the Court. It is often argued that in Christianity and Islam, there is no theological defence of discrimination based on social stratification. That Sikhism and Buddhism are part of the civilisational universe of Hinduism is an argument which has gained political and constitutional legitimacy. Under Explanation II to Article 25(2) of the Constitution, the definition of Hindu includes the Sikh, Buddhist and Jain faiths. Neither the theological nor the constitutional arguments for the exclusion of converts to Islam and Christianity from special protections are logically or empirically watertight, and hence the question continues to fester. Christian or Muslim converts continue to face discrimination, including untouchability, even within their new religious world. After all, discrimination needs no theological sanction. But the question of their inclusion remains a politically surcharged topic, with a commission headed by former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan examining this. Many Dalit activists oppose the inclusion of converts within the existing quantum of reservation. Many members of SC communities who have converted to Christianity or Islam receive benefits under provisions meant for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes under Article 15(4) of the Constitution. The Court’s decision is appropriate under the existing legal and constitutional scheme, and any change can only come through a political process and the legislative route.

Reliance Industries rejects reports of Iranian oil purchase after US sanctions relief

26.03.26

Reliance Industries on Thursday said it has not bought crude oil of Iranian origin since the US temporarily removed sanctions to ease pressure on prices that followed the US-Israeli war on Iran.

In a statement, Reliance termed reports of it buying Iranian oil as baseless and incorrect.

It said it "categorically rejects recent media reports that the company has purchased crude oil of Iranian origin."

The government earlier this week said resuming the buying of Iranian oil will be based on techno-commercial feasibility.

Historically, India was a major buyer of Iranian crude, importing significant volumes of Iranian Light and Heavy grades due to strong refinery compatibility and favourable commercial terms.

Following sanctions tightening in 2018, imports ceased from May 2019, with volumes replaced by Middle Eastern, US and other grades. At peak, Iranian crude accounted for 11.5 per cent of India's total imports.

Last weekend, the US waived sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil at sea for 30 days in its latest attempt to ease oil prices that have been driven up by the US-Israeli war on Iran. An estimated 140 million barrels of Iranian oil are on vessels at sea.

While the waiver allowed countries to purchase those barrels, it is unclear how payments will be made.

Iran remains cut off from SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) - a global messaging network used by banks and financial institutions to securely send and receive information about financial transactions.

Industry sources said the last purchases from Iran were made in Euros using a Turkish bank as a go-between, but that option no longer exists.

Iran was cut off from the SWIFT system in March 2012 following European Union sanctions over its nuclear programme, with the move forcing the disconnection of multiple Iranian banks and severely restricting global financial transactions.

Further disruptions occurred in 2018, after the United States reimposed sanctions, leading to renewed suspension of several Iranian banks from the network, which significantly constrained Tehran's ability to conduct international trade, receive oil payments and access foreign currency reserves.

Gaza death toll passes 72,000 as rubble recoveries continue

March 26, 2026

GAZA CITY: The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has climbed to 72,267 since the start of the conflict in October 2023, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, with the majority of victims reported to be women and children. At least 171,976 others have

been injured.

The figures are not complete, because many bodies are still trapped under rubble and inaccessible to rescue teams and ambulances, the Palestinian News & Information Agency reported.

Violence has persisted in Gaza despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that took effect on Oct. 10, 2025.

Since then, the Health Ministry has recorded 691 additional deaths and 1,876 injuries.

At least 756 bodies have also been recovered from under the rubble during this period.

Medical sources reported that the bodies of two Palestinians and 17 injured people arrived at hospitals in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.

The territory’s civil defense agency said a fireball erupted over Gaza on Wednesday as an Israeli strike tore through a tent camp housing displaced Palestinians, killing one person and injuring seven.

The strike hit the Al-Sitt camp in the Deir Al-Balah area, said the civil defense agency.

AFP photographs showed flames engulfing the tents, sending thick black smoke into the sky.

Gaza’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital confirmed the toll.

Suhaila Khalil, 57, who lives in a tent in the area, said she heard screams as the strike tore through the camp.

“The explosion happened several hundred meters from our tent, but smoke and shrapnel rained down on displaced people, leaving several injured,” Khalil said.

Hundreds of thousands of Gazans have been living in makeshift camps since the war erupted after the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

Explosions heard from south Beirut as local media report Israeli strike

March 27, 2026

BEIRUT: Lebanese media reported an Israeli strike hit Beirut’s southern suburbs early Friday, as AFP correspondents heard several explosions from the Hezbollah stronghold, which Israel has repeatedly struck since war erupted this month.

AFPTV footage showed smoke billowing from the area after the raid.

Israel has previously issued sweeping evacuation warnings for the area, but provided no specific warning in advance of Friday’s strike, which came in the early hours of the morning.

The usually densely populated area has largely emptied of residents since the hostilities erupted, and it was unclear whether there were any casualties.

Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war on March 2 when Tehran-backed Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel to avenge the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israel has since been bombing Lebanon, mainly in areas where Hezbollah has long held sway, and has sent in ground troops in a push to establish a buffer zone in south Lebanon.

Hezbollah said its fighters kept up its attacks on Israeli troops in south Lebanon early Friday.

On Thursday, official Lebanese media reported deadly Israeli raids in the country’s south, and Hezbollah claimed more than 90 attacks on Israeli targets inside Lebanon and across the border.

Also Thursday, Israel’s military said two soldiers were killed in south Lebanon, while Israeli emergency services said a rocket fired from Lebanon killed a man in northern Israel’s Nahariya area.

Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed at least 1,116 people including 121 children, according to Lebanese authorities, while more than one million people have been displaced.

Palestinians bury man killed in West Bank army car chase

March 26, 2026

YATTA, Palestinian Territories: Palestinians from the Masafer Yatta area in the occupied West Bank on Thursday buried a man killed when his car overturned while being chased by Israeli troops, relatives and the military said.

Yosri Abu Qubaita, 28, was killed the day before when his vehicle was chased through the mountains in southern West Bank.

He was laid to rest under the rain in the town of Yatta, his body wrapped in a Palestinian flag.

Relatives wept over his body as a funerary prayer rang out on speakers, an AFP correspondent reported.

“The car overturned and hit a rock,” said Zaid Youssef, who was in another car involved in the incident.

Youssef said the group of cars had initially come under fire from Israeli settlers.

“We fled toward the mountains because of the settlers’ gunfire,” he said.

About half an hour later, emergency crews arrived, he said.

“They started calling us. Then we went back, checked the car, and found him dead,” Youssef added.

The Israeli military said soldiers had pursued several vehicles that drove through a checkpoint without stopping for inspection.

“IDF soldiers initiated a suspect apprehension procedure, which included several warning shots fired into the air,” the military told AFP.

“During their flight, the suspect vehicle lost control, veered off the road, and overturned,” it added.

The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed the incident, reporting three people were also injured from live ammunition. It did not specify who had shot them.

Youssef said the Palestinians in the vehicles were heading to jobs inside Israel and fled because they lacked permits to cross the checkpoint.

“We simply want them to open the roads for us to go to work, to provide for our families,” Youssef said.

Majed Abu Qubaita, Yosri’s father, told AFP the family relied on his son’s work for sustenance.

“He supported his entire family, including me and his ailing mother,” he said.

Masafer Yatta, an arid cluster of communities in the southern West Bank, has in recent years faced mounting pressure, from demolition orders to rising settler violence from nearby hilltop outposts.

Movement is further constrained by an expanding network of Israeli military checkpoints.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.

Alongside roughly three million Palestinians, more than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements and outposts in the West Bank, which are illegal under international law.

Since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran, six Palestinians have been shot dead in settler attacks in the West Bank, according to a tally of data from the Ramallah-based health ministry.

Iraq condemns any ‘aggression, targeting’ of Gulf states, Jordan

March 26, 2026

BAGHDAD: Iraq on Thursday condemned the targeting of the Gulf states and Jordan, a day after these countries issued a joint statement demanding Baghdad act to prevent attacks from its territory.

The Iraqi foreign ministry “affirms the government’s categorical condemnation of any aggression or targeting of the Gulf countries and the Kingdom of Jordan,” it said in a statement, adding it was prepared to “work jointly to address them (attacks) responsibly and swiftly.”

Iraq was committed to taking the “necessary measures to manage the security challenges,” it added.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan issued a joint statement demanding that Baghdad act immediately to prevent attacks from its territory by Iran-backed armed groups.

Iraq has been drawn into the war sparked by US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28.

Pro-Tehran Iraqi groups have said they have targeted US interests in the country, as well as the wider region.

Kuwait and Jordan have both said they have been targeted by Iraqi armed factions.

A shadowy group called Saraya Awliyaa Al-Dam (Guardians of the Blood Brigades), which claims to be part of the Tehran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq, has claimed attacks on the two countries.

Houthis ‘stand ready to strike vital waterway’

March 26, 2026

ADEN: Yemen’s Houthi movement, whose attacks on the Red Sea caused international shipping and trade chaos during the Gaza war, stands ready to strike the key waterway again in solidarity with Tehran, one Houthi leader said, a move that would deepen a global oil and economic crisis brought on by the Middle East war.

If the Houthis open a new front in the conflict, one obvious target would be the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait off the coast of Yemen, a key shipping chokepoint and narrow passageway that controls sea traffic toward the Suez Canal, following Iran’s effective closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s allies in Lebanon and Iraq have joined the war in the region unleashed by US and Israeli strikes on Tehran.

But Houthis, heavily armed and capable of striking Gulf neighbors and causing major disruption to maritime navigation around the Arabian Peninsula, have not yet entered the fray.

“We stand fully militarily ready with all options. As for other details having to do with determining zero hour, they are left to leadership, and we are monitoring and following up with the developments and will know when the suitable time is to move,” said the Houthi leader.

“Until now, Iran has been doing well, and the battle is going in its direction. If anything contrary to this happens, then we can assess.”

Some diplomats and analysts say the Houthis are awaiting an opportune moment to enter the conflict, in coordination with Iran, in order to exert maximum pressure.

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to Gulf hydrocarbon exports and a shift to heavy reliance on the Red Sea might provide such an opportunity.

Iran could open a new front in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait if attacks are carried out on Iranian territory or its islands, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim cited an unnamed Iranian military source as saying on Wednesday.

The Houthis previously launched attacks in the region.

Bab Al-Mandab, or the Gate of Tears, named for its perilous navigation conditions, is the southern outlet of the Red Sea, situated between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea on the African coast.

It is one of the world’s most important routes for global seaborne commodity shipments, particularly crude oil and fuel from the Gulf bound for the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal or the SUMED pipeline on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, as well as commodities bound for Asia, including Russian oil.

The Bab Al-Mandab is 29 km wide at its narrowest point, limiting traffic to two channels for inbound and outbound shipments.

After the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel led by Palestinian militant group Hamas, which triggered a devastating Israeli military campaign in Gaza, the Houthis began firing on international shipping in the Red Sea, saying it was in support of the Palestinians.

The Houthis, a military, political, and religious movement, ceased their attacks following a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in October 2025.

“When they see Iran needs them the most, then they will move,” Amr Al-Bidh, a member of Yemen’s separatist Southern Transitional Council’s senior leadership, told Reuters in Geneva.

Rubio holds call with Iraqi Kurdish leader, State Department says

March 27, 2026

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday, the State Department said, adding he expressed “gratitude” to KRG for enabling oil from Iraq, including from Iraq’s Kurdistan, to reach global markets.

“The secretary also expressed his gratitude to the Kurdistan Regional Government for enabling oil from Iraq, including from the Iraq Kurdistan Region, to reach global markets,” the State Department said in a statement.

The Iran war has raised oil prices and shaken global markets.

The State Department said Rubio “offered his condolences to the families of the Peshmerga killed in an Iranian missile attack on March 24 and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.”

At least six Kurdish Peshmerga fighters were killed and 30 wounded in a rocket attack on their base north of Irbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, a Peshmerga statement said on Tuesday.

The Peshmerga statement said Iran carried out a “treacherous attack,” adding that six Iranian ballistic missiles struck a Peshmerga military headquarters north of Irbil early on Tuesday.

The Iran war began on February 28 when the US and Israel attacked Iran. Tehran subsequently responded by launching its own attacks on Israel and Gulf states with US bases. Joint US-Israeli strikes in Iran and Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed thousands.

US President Donald Trump has offered shifting goals and timelines for the war, ranging from overthrowing Iran’s government to destroying its military and missile capabilities. On Thursday, he once again said he thinks his side has won the war.

US-Iran war complicates WHO’s emergency medical supply routes

March 26, 2026

GENEVA: The World Health Organization is finding alternative routes to deliver emergency medical supplies from its Dubai hub to crisis zones such as Lebanon

via long overland journeys, an official said, but rising fuel costs could hamper shipments if the war in Iran persists.

The global health body’s aid shipments from the UAE were previously completely frozen as air, sea, and land routes were restricted by the Iran conflict, which began on Feb. 28 with US-Israeli air strikes.

Iran responded by firing drones and missiles at energy and other infrastructure across the Gulf, while Hezbollah pulled Lebanon into the regional war by firing on Israel in support  of Iran.

To tackle the shipment problems, the UAE has provided funding to truck supplies like insulin and emergency kits to Lebanon — where over 3,000 people have been wounded — via Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria, as well as funding to charter flights to other hotspots like Kabul, Afghanistan, said the WHO official.

“What you’re getting is cost increases and lead time increases as we do the workarounds,” Paul Molinaro, WHO head of Operations, Support and Logistics, said on Thursday.

A UAE official confirmed that it was providing support to partners.

But Molinaro said the Dubai backlog has not completely cleared, citing smaller medical shipments that remain stranded.

He said two shipping companies had waived  insurance surcharges.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said it planned to truck ambulances to Lebanon overland from Dubai, but that road costs were up by around 30 percent, and there were  border delays.

Asked about the risk of drug shortages, Molinaro said he was more concerned about oil price hikes leading to exhausted fuel stocks in poorer countries and aid stocks becoming stranded.

“You could be seeing serious issues 6 to 8 weeks down the line,” he said.

“I think we’re going to feel that quicker than shortages of drugs and of plastics and of equipment.”

Marine sustainability rising to the surface in urban planning

BASMAH ALBASRAWI

March 27, 2026

RIYADH: As the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 continues to push ahead with its real estate goals, marine sustainability is highlighting the growing importance of integrating science with urbanization.

Along Jeddah’s Red Sea Coast, developers are planning for their upcoming projects to embrace an innovative approach to real estate, one that aligns with tourism, economic return, and importantly, marine ecosystems.

According to Vision 2030, the efforts under the framework of the National Red Sea Sustainability Strategy place great emphasis on the intersectionality of marine life with sectors such as real estate.

“Through marine-protected areas, habitat restoration, and innovative sustainable projects, Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen its position as a leader in marine sustainability while supporting local communities and economic diversification,” states the intiative’s website.

The incorporation of marine sustainability has made its way into real estate in the Kingdom through various streams, from coral preservation to water circulation systems, and has now become a core factor in coastal development.

The move is one that understands long-term real estate value’s close relationship to environmental preservation, particularly in destinations such as Jeddah, where the Red Sea is a primary attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Understanding coral reefs plays a crucial role when real estate developers assess whether the long-term strategy of waterfront destinations is as equally sustainable as it is economically successful.

Dr. Taiba Alamoudi, expert in marine ecology and coastal ecosystems, spoke to Arab News on the importance of coral reefs in these developments, and said: “Coral reefs are irreplaceable natural infrastructure, among the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on the planet … for any waterfront development, a healthy reef is both the product and the protection. Degrade it, and you lose both.”

The environmental preservation aspect of these reefs is strategic in terms of investment for real estate developers, as the Kingdom’s Red Sea reefs are among the most thermally resilient globally.

Developers understand the coral reefs are environmentally unique and would strengthen a coastal real estate portfolio.

A destination that has integrated that into its approach is ALMA Destination in North Jeddah, a 3.12 million-sq.-meter waterfront development that took on a marina-led urban concept.

ALMA reflects the Kingdom’s marine sustainability priorities in real estate, not only from government-led initiatives, but from private sector participation as well.

Environmental sustainability has been embedded in the framework of ALMA’s development from the beginning, with marine and environmental calculation determining the canal system design, as well as the development’s water circulation and flushing strategies.

ALMA’s prioritization of marine sustainability during its development include its strategy surrounding coral reefs.

To protect marine ecosystems, coral reefs located within dredging areas were relocated and replanted in offshore marine zones before excavation efforts began.

ALMA also incorporates a canal network that relies on natural tidal movement for water circulation, which in turn allows for continuous water renewal without mechanical intervention, a strategy that helps prevent stagnation while water quality is maintained.

ALMA is one example that mirrors the broader shift toward science-based developments in real estate in the Kingdom.

Matheus Paiva, senior oceanographer at KAUST Beacon Development, told Arab News that science-based calculations and mapping are critical to destinations like the Red Sea.

“Early integration of comprehensive environmental studies is the most critical factor in preventing irreversible ecological damage … this must be paired with visual surveys to accurately map sensitive habitats like coral reefs and seagrass meadows,” he said.

“This data-first approach enables what we call informed design.” Paiva added.

He went on to explain that failing to plan with consideration for coral and overall marine life can create a series of complex structural and marine-life issues.

“If not properly managed, treated or untreated wastewater from surrounding urban centers introduces excess nutrients that can trigger harmful algal blooms, further degrading water quality,” Paiva said, adding: “With proper planning, these water quality challenges can be mitigated through science-backed design and long-term water quality monitoring programs.”

ALMA Destination’s coral reef relocation strategy was no easy feat, Paiva emphasized, saying: “It is not simply a matter of moving corals; you must match the depth, light, flow regimes, and water quality of the new site to the original habitat as closely as possible.”

The role that developers play in understanding marine life through thorough consultations with experts from different entities is fundamental to ensuring that the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 for sustainability is pursued with meticulous effort.

Alamoudi called this role “transformative,” adding: “The developers defining the next generation of coastal real estate are those treating marine ecosystems as core assets on the balance sheet, not line items in a compliance report.”

Red Crescent intensifies field deployment to deal with heavy rains forecast

RASHID HASSAN

March 26, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Meteorology has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday across the Kingdom following which the Saudi Red Crescent intensified field deployment in Al-Baha to deal with heavy rainfall in the region.

According to the NCM, heavy rain leading to possible flash floods and accompanied by hail and dust-stirring winds is expected in parts of Eastern, Riyadh, Madinah, Makkah, Al-Baha, and Aseer regions.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is also forecast in parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jouf, Tabuk, Hail, Qassim, Jazan, and Najran regions.

As NCM forecast fog in parts of these areas, and snowfall in parts of the highlands of Tabuk Region, snow blanketed the mountain highlands of Trojena on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority in the Al-Baha region has raised its readiness level to maximum and activated emergency and immediate response plans, coinciding with weather warnings of a severe weather system affecting the Sarawat, Tihama, and Badia regions, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

This is expected to bring heavy rain, dense fog leading to near-zero visibility, strong surface winds, hail, and flash floods, the authority said.

The authority said it has mobilized all its human and logistical resources to enhance the speed of response. It has deployed 17 ambulance teams to the region, in addition to two active teams from regional response partners and four additional response teams.

An ambulance station has been established at Al-Baha mountain pass, and ambulance deployment levels have been increased at vital locations and high-risk areas.

Furthermore, five reserve teams are on high alert for immediate intervention, ensuring faster response times and improved efficiency in handling reports from affected areas.

The authority also confirmed its continued intensive field monitoring around the clock, with intensified ambulance deployment in affected areas, in coordination with relevant agencies, to monitor weather developments and ensure maximum readiness to respond to reports and emergencies.

The Red Crescent authority urged Al-Baha residents to take the warnings seriously, adhere to safety guidelines, and avoid going to waterlogged areas and flood channels, especially given the reduced visibility due to fog.

It emphasized that ambulance services can be requested 24/7 via the number 997, or through the “Is’afni,” “Tawakkalna,” and “Absher” applications.

The Saudi capital on Thursday experienced moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day leading to a substantial drop in the mercury level, Madinah received heavy rainfall across the region with overcast skies signaling the possibility of more rain, while light to moderate rain fell in various parts of Makkah and Tabuk regions.

AlUla Governorate experienced light to moderate rain, affecting several areas, and more rain is expected, while moderate to heavy rain fell in Taif Governorate, causing several valleys and streams to overflow, SPA reported.

The NCM has also forecast continued thunderstorms across most regions until the weekend, with varying intensity.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense urged the public to exercise caution as thunderstorms are forecast to affect parts of the Kingdom through March 28.

Residents are advised to remain in safe locations, avoid flood-prone areas such as valleys, and follow safety instructions issued via media and official social platforms.

The inclement weather in Riyadh also saw cool weather returning to the capital.

Abdullah Ali, a Riyadh resident, told Arab News: “From the relatively warm weather during the week, I’s now cool weather, and we are enjoying it.

“Since the NCM has warned of inclement weather and thunderstorms, it is good for us to remain indoors and enjoy the cool weather with the family,” he added.

The minimum temperature in the capital plummeted to 13 degrees Celcius and will further decrease by a degree or two on Friday.

According to NCM winds over the Red Sea will be northwesterly to westerly in the northern part, and southwesterly to northwesterly in the central and southern parts at speeds of 30-65 kph. Waves may range from 1.5 meters to over 3 m; the sea will be calm to choppy.

In the Arabian Gulf, winds will be southeasterly to southerly at speeds of 25-60 kph. Waves will range from 1.5 m to over 2 m; the sea will be calm to choppy.

Reform candidate who called Humza Yousaf 'Islamist moron' quits

Mar 26th, 2026

A Reform candidate who called Humza Yousaf an “Islamist moron” and “not British” has dropped out of the election race.

Linda Holt, who was contesting the North East Fife seat, was dropped down to eighth position on the party’s Mid Scotland and Fife regional list on Wednesday.

Announcing her withdrawal from the election, she said: “Due to a lack of support from the party, I am withdrawing my candidacy for Reform with immediate effect.

“I thank all those who have supported me, and I wish the remaining candidates well.”

The announcement comes just days after she said she was “delighted and honoured” to be selected as the candidate.

The Courier previously had reported how Holt had made a number of offensive comments about the former first minister on social media.

She is said to have also claimed the Scottish Government was “becoming a Hamas PR support act” while Yousaf was Holyrood leader.

Her decision to quit comes after the party suspended one of its Holyrood candidates less than 24 hours after his selection.

Stuart Niven was announced as Reform’s Dundee City West candidate before allegations emerged about his financial conduct.

The Herald reported Niven had been banned from acting as a company director for seven years after diverting thousands of pounds from a taxpayer-backed Covid loan into his personal account.

Reform UK Scotland confirmed that Niven has been suspended pending further investigation into allegations regarding his financial conduct.

The party’s Scottish leader has also faced calls to step down after revelations surrounding a homophobic joke made in 2018 came to light.

Malcolm Offord is said to have made the joke while giving a Burns Night speech at the London Scottish rugby club.

He issued a statement in which he described the joke as “crude”.

He said he had intended it to be “edgy and shocking” but “instantly regretted it”.

French court finds Swiss Islamic scholar Ramadan guilty of rape

26 March, 2026

Swiss Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan was sentenced on Wednesday to 18 years in prison by a Paris criminal court for the rape of three women.

The verdict marks the latest fall from grace for the former Oxford University professor, who faces a string of rape allegations in Switzerland and France and has already been convicted in the former.

A charismatic yet controversial figure in European Islam, Ramadan has always maintained his innocence.

While he had been on trial in Paris since 2 March for rapes allegedly committed against three women between 2009 and 2016, Ramadan did not appear in court in person.

His lawyer cited a "flare-up" of multiple sclerosis requiring hospitalisation in Geneva to explain his absence, but this was rejected by a court-ordered medical assessment.

Presiding Judge Corinne Goetzmann said a warrant for the 63-year-old's arrest had been issued. The court also barred the scholar from setting foot on French territory again after the end of his sentence.

In 2025, Switzerland's supreme court rejected Ramadan's appeal against his conviction for the rape of a woman in a Geneva hotel nearly two decades ago.

It upheld the sentence of three years in prison, two of which were suspended, handed down by the court in Geneva.

Before word of his crimes came to light, Ramadan was a professor of contemporary Islamic studies at Oxford and held visiting roles at universities in Qatar and Morocco.

He was forced to take a leave of absence in 2017 when rape allegations surfaced in France at the height of the "Me Too" movement.

Council refuses plan for mosque conversion

27 March 2026

Chris Young

Plans to convert part of a madrassa on a Bradford residential street into a mosque have been refused by a planning committee.

Anwaar-Ul-Islam on Woodhall Avenue in Thornbury has been operating as a madrassa - a place of learning - since 2012.

Although the applicants said the mosque would only be used by 50 people at most, a supporting petition signed by almost 200 people suggested the actual number of worshippers could be much higher, councillors said.

Bradford Council refused the application after planning officers raised concerns over a lack of on-site parking and said potential "noise and disturbance" could affect local residents.

The council originally approved a proposal to convert the end-terrace building into a religious education centre in 2012 , but one of the conditions was that the building could only be used for education and not as a place of worship.

Applicant Mohammed Kashif Ali applied last year for permission to convert the ground floor of the building into a mosque with space for 50 worshippers, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

On behalf of the applicants, Ghazanfer Khaliq told the panel he thought 50 worshippers would be the highest number the building could accommodate, and said although on-street parking would be increased at times it would not be a major issue, with many attendees walking from nearby homes.

The council's legal officer, Bob Power, said it would be very difficult to add a condition to the application to limit the amount of worshippers as monitoring numbers at all times would be impossible.

Sinead Engel, Labour councillor for Clayton and Fairweather Green, said: "I don't feel comfortable undermining the condition on the planning application that was granted in 2012.

"There was a petition of 195 people who want this, but we've been told only 30 to 50 people will be able to make use of it.

"It is the wrong site - they need a bigger place."

Prayers by Muslims in public are not a threat

27 MARCH 2026

AS SOMEONE whose entire professional identity is about making the case for faith in public life, I should be pleased that, during the past week or so, the right to pray publicly has been stimulating political discourse. And yet . . .

It began when the Shadow Justice Secretary, Nick Timothy MP, posted a video online of Muslims breaking their Ramadan fast with an iftar meal and call to prayer in Trafalgar Square recently. It was, he said, “an act of domination . . . not welcome in our public places and shared institutions”. What has ensued has been a somewhat unedifying discourse about what sort of expressions of faith belong in the public square.

In a week of global turmoil, the matter was serious enough to be raised at Prime Minister’s Questions last week. The Prime Minister called on the Leader of the Opposition, Kemi Badenoch, to sack Mr Timothy for his comments. Sir Keir Starmer stated that the diverse celebrations of faith that took place in Trafalgar Square, and other shared institutions, were demonstrative of the strength of our common life, not to be used to create division.

The Bishop of Willesden, in the diocese of London, the Rt Revd Lusa Nsenga-Ngoy, who is the lead bishop for interfaith engagement, criticising Mr Timothy’s comments, said that “to suggest that such an event is somehow threatening risks misunderstanding both the nature of religious expression and the character of our national life.”

It is not the event itself that is a new development so much as the hostility of the reaction. Public spaces, from Trafalgar Square to Wembley Stadium, have hosted iftars, Chanukah celebrations, Vaisakhi events, and carol services for years. As the Bishop of Kirkstall, in Leeds diocese, the Rt Revd Arun Arora, noted, Christian acts of remembrance and lament took place metres away every November, and Christians would gather there in Holy Week for the annual re-enactment of Christ’s Passion.

THE heightened attention and animosity this year, with the throwing around of hyperbolic language such as “domination”, should concern us all at a time when cohesion between communities is stretched and our national identity is contested. There has been a demonstrable rise in anti-Muslim hatred in recent years, and, this week, an arson attack on a Jewish ambulance service is being investigated as alleged anti-Semitism.

Elsewhere, there has been booing from football crowds in response to matches pausing to allow Muslim players to break their fast pitchside. Again, this is not the first season that the Football Association has made provision for this, but the angry reactions and online furore this year feel like a gear change in community relations — and not for the better.

Some, including the Reform MP Danny Kruger, have taken the approach of Christian exceptionalism here: prayer in public spaces is welcome, as is any other expression of faith, but only if it is the Christian faith. Against the backdrop of growing concerns about Christian nationalism, it is hard not to wonder whether this is really about prayer at all. The invoking of “domination” speaks of a burgeoning instrumentalisation of religion, not always by good-faith actors, and one that Christians should resist.

Mr Timothy’s argument that Muslim prayers were permissible, if they were confined to the mosque, was problematic, too. There are any number of reasons that worshippers may want to pray together beyond the walls of their places of worship; in the context of an open iftar, it is an act of hospitality to the wider community.

Mr Timothy objected to the adhan, because it made exclusivist claims about the Prophet Muhammad. To understand these claims themselves as divisive or oppressive is religiously illiterate.

Many religions have core tenets that are “exclusivist” in nature, directly contradictory to those of other religions — “Jesus is Lord,” to name just one, which was famously exclusivist in the context of the politics and practice of first-century Israel. It is possible to hold these beliefs and to state them publicly without seeking to coerce others. Proclamation of such belief is not inherently dangerous.

CONTRARY to Mr Timothy, I believe that the validity of our own faith and its expression is strengthened rather than threatened by parallel expression by our brothers and sisters of other faiths. The place of faith in public life and the freedom of religion and belief extend to all faiths and none, or else they are meaningless.

The theological truths that we hold are not diminished by the expression of the different, conflicting, prayers and beliefs of others in our plural public square. As Bishop Nsenga-Ngoy puts it, “We cannot, with integrity, defend the public role of Christianity while questioning the visibility of other traditions. To do so would be not only inconsistent, but unjust.”

When Christians in town squares and high streets gather this Palm Sunday, we will proclaim that Jesus is Lord. Maybe the fact that we may well do so accompanied by a donkey will make it evident that this is far from an act of domination, theologically or politically; but we should be equally clear that neither is the iftar meal shared in Trafalgar Square.

Wood Lane Dagenham mosque plans to 'benefit the community'

26TH MARCH

By Gianni Cirillo

The potential manager of a mosque and community centre planned to replace a post office in Dagenham says the site would be used to "benefit the community".

A planning application was submitted to Barking and Dagenham Council on March 11 to change the use of the post office at 279 Wood Lane to a mosque and community centre.

The applicant is ArRabia Foundation and this would be the group's first permanent geographical location.

A planning document said the proposal "seeks to introduce a community-focused use that responds to local need" at the post office site which has been unsuccessfully marketed for sale for three years.

One of ArRabia Foundation's managers, Alam Chowdhury, told this paper that the building would be used for the wider community's benefit, not just for prayer.

“Early morning prayer will take maybe 10 minutes and afternoon prayer another 15-20 minutes," he said.

"At maximum we’d be using the space for prayer for one hour each day but then you have loads of other time throughout the day.

“We’re thinking we can have an after-school club for children where they can learn the basics of Islamic education and we could have tea mornings for elderly people.

“I have an idea for yoga and fitness activities for people 60-plus and that doesn’t require religion – it just requires the body so we welcome anybody from the community who wants to benefit from it.

“We want to utilise it maximally to benefit the community."

Alam said ArRabia Foundation carried out a local survey before submitting the application and found that around 400 Muslim families live in the area but don't have easy walking access to a community centre.

He said that other locations were considered for the proposal but they weren't as "practical" as the post office in Wood Lane, which has "a few small rooms" that Alam believes would be useful for children's education or exercise.

“This isn’t going to be only a mosque but a place that the community really needs," he said.

“I humbly request people to work with us and support us.

“We want to work with the community and we need to work together and be stronger together.

“This is going to bring us together – I need my children and the next generation to integrate more into the community."

Alam said he is "very passionate about community cohesion" and wants the site to be used "just how a normal community centre is used" outside of prayer time.

He said that during Iftar, when Muslims break their fast at sunset during Ramadan, ArRabia already invites both Muslims and non-Muslims to come together and share food when the fast is broken.

He also said they celebrate Eid in Parsloes Park where they pray together before enjoying a funfair "where all the community can join" and hopes to continue these events.

There is not a clear date for when a decision is expected to be made on the proposal by the council.

Concerns Liverpool Council housing plans could disrupt one of country's largest mosques

David Humphreys

26 Mar 2026

Officials at one of the UK’s largest mosques have said that a planned residential development a stone’s throw away would be “catastrophic.” It was revealed earlier this year how derelict and rundown properties reclaimed by Liverpool Council could be repurposed as part of a new plan to deliver hundreds of affordable homes.

Among the sites included is land at Rosebery Street. This is located in the shadow of Al-Rahma Mosque, the largest in the city and one of the biggest Muslim places of worship in the UK.

However, officials from the mosque have expressed concern about the proposed inclusion of the nearby site and the impact it could have on the thousands of worshippers who attend every day. Al-Rahma Mosque is the third purpose-built mosque in the UK and the largest mosque in Merseyside, serving a diverse community of worshippers from over 60 ethnic backgrounds.

Last month, as part of wider plans by the local authority to build affordable homes on a series of small sites, it was revealed land at Rosebery Street could be used for uses other than housing as part of community engagement; views will be sought on the preferred use of the site. If the community’s preference is for the site to come forward for housing, it is proposed that it would be included in the registered provider small sites package, subject to cabinet approval.

It is the latest development proposal for the area after plans for 11 homes to be built on Rosebery Street were rejected by Liverpool Council planning officials in 2021. This was following a concerted community campaign.

However, the new hopes for housing have drawn concern from the mosque, with a petition launched as part of a wider coalition to inform the redevelopment of the Rosebery area. A post on the Al-Rahma Mosque Facebook page set out its position.

It said: “There are currently proposals to develop the land adjacent to the Al-Rahma Mosque on Rosebery Street into a residential housing site. This development would have serious and potentially catastrophic consequences for the mosque and the thousands of worshippers who attend every day.”

“Significant” disruption could be caused to worship “due to complaints about noise, traffic, and the normal operation of mosque activities,” officials wrote, with parking pressure and safety risks also highlighted as potential issues.

The post added: “This development risks undermining the long-term future of one of the UK’s most historic and important mosques.

“Al-Rahma Mosque is not only a place of worship; it is a cornerstone of community life in Liverpool, providing education, youth support, charity work, and social cohesion for thousands of people. Al-Rahma Mosque is one of the busiest places of worship in Liverpool, serving a large and vibrant community every day.

“Liverpool City Council should protect this vital community institution, not undermine it by allowing housing to be built directly adjacent to it. Developing residential housing immediately next to the mosque would inevitably lead to pressure, complaints, and restrictions that could significantly disrupt worship and threaten the future growth and stability of the mosque.

“For these reasons, the community strongly believes that the Rosebery Street site should instead be used for community-led development that complements the mosque and supports the needs of local residents, rather than creating long-term conflict and disruption.”

CAIR-CT Applauds Stratford Superintendent, BOE for Inclusion of Eid-ul-Fitr as School Holiday

March 26, 2026

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded the Stratford Board of Education for recognizing Eid-ul-Fitr as a school holiday starting 2027, marking a significant milestone for inclusion, religious accommodation and student equity in the district.

“On behalf of the Stratford community, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Stratford Superintendent of Schools and Board of Education for their strong support and collaboration since this process began last year,” said CAIR-CT chairman Farhan Memon. “Their leadership ensures that Stratford students can now enjoy Eid with their families and friends without fear of missing school or falling behind academically. This important step places Stratford at the forefront of efforts to combat bullying, racism, and hate, and affirms a commitment to creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for Muslim students.”

[NOTE: Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or “feast of fast-breaking,” is the first of the two major Muslim holidays after the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. Many communities hold multicultural bazaars and other family activities following prayers. The second holiday, Eid ul-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), comes near the end of the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca. Earlier this year, CAIR-CT commended both the Farmington and Avon Board of Education for their decision to recognize Eid-ul-Fitr as an official district-wide holiday in its school district starting in 2027.]

CAIR offers a booklet, called “Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.

This decision follows sustained community organizing, advocacy, and collaboration between Stratford families, community leaders, and CAIR-CT. The effort reflects a strong partnership between residents and school leadership to ensure that Muslim students feel seen, respected, and supported in their learning environment.

For many years, Muslim students have had to decide between celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr and going to school. Although schools may grant excused absences in recognition of the holiday, this accommodation often does not fully address the impact—students are still responsible for making up tests, assignments, and missed lessons, which can create added stress and disruption for both Muslim and non-Muslim students. Designating Eid as an official school holiday helps eliminate these challenges and ensures Muslim students are treated equitably alongside their peers.

Beyond academic equity, formal recognition of Eid also plays an important role in fostering safer and more inclusive school environments. CAIR’s Massachusetts chapter has reported that 50 percent of Muslim students have experienced bullying by classmates or teachers because of their faith. Public acknowledgment of Muslim holidays helps normalize Muslim identity, educates the broader student body, and serves as a meaningful step toward pushing back against anti-Muslim bias and bullying in schools.

CAIR-CT calls on additional towns across Connecticut to build on the leadership of the 24 municipalities that have already made Eid a school holiday. The organization especially encourages districts such as Danbury, Bethel, North Haven, Cheshire, and Berlin to take similar action. Establishing Eid as a recognized holiday advances fairness in education, helps reduce absenteeism, fosters stronger family involvement, and reflects the increasing diversity within Connecticut’s schools.

As the nation continues to navigate issues of religious inclusion in public schools, Stratford’s decision serves as a model for how districts can create welcoming environments for students of all backgrounds.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Ukrainian arms smuggler, Cuban fraudster, Lebanese criminal: US revokes citizenship of all three, says it's not a cheap status

Mar 27, 2026

Ukrainian arms smuggler Vladimir Volgaev, Cuban woman Cabrera Diaz and Lebanese man Alec Nasreddine Kassir. All three of them had US citizenship until they didn't, as the Donald Trump administration found out their crime trail and denaturalized them, revoking their US citizenship, making it clear that getting US citizenship does not make an individual immune to punitive actions and citizenship can be revoked. “American citizenship is a sacred privilege — not a cheap status that can be obtained dishonestly,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “These actions reflect this Department of Justice's ongoing efforts to strip citizenship from people who conceal crimes or defraud the American people during the immigration process.”

Ukrainian arms smuggler Vladimir Volgaev

Starting in 2011, Volgaev was involved in purchasing, packaging and smuggling of firearm components to individuals in Ukraine and Italy. On Sept 30, 2025, the Justice Department filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida seeking Volgaev’s denaturalization based on his crimes and his failure to disclose them during his naturalization process.

On March 23, the court entered an order revoking Volgaev’s U.S. citizenship. The court held that Volgaev committed unlawful acts during the period prior to his naturalization in which he was required to show good moral character, thus making him ineligible for naturalization. Also, the court found that Volgaev provided false testimony regarding his criminal background and procured his U.S. citizenship by willfully misrepresenting these facts.

Cuban woman Cabrera Diaz

Mirelys Cabrera Diaz, a native of Cuba and resident of Hialeah, Florida, became a naturalized US citizen in 2017. She committed healthcare fraud between 2011 and 2014 before she was naturalized. She admitted that she and her co-conspirators paid kickbacks to patient recruiters for referring fraudulent prescriptions to the pharmacy where she worked.

The US district court held that Cabrera Diaz illegally procured her naturalization. Among the requirements for naturalization, Cabrera Diaz was required to show that she was a person of good moral character during the “statutory period” from five years before she applied for naturalization until she took the oath of citizenship. The court concluded that she could not establish the required good moral character for naturalization because she conspired to commit health care fraud.

Lebanese criminal Alec Nasreddine Kassir

Kassir committed a marriage fraud as he claimed that he had been living with a US citizen spouse, during the three years immediately preceding the filing of his naturalization application in March 2010. On Nov 14, 2018, he pleaded guilty to passport fraud in the Southern District of Florida. In his criminal proceedings, Kassir admitted that he obtained his US passport through the fraudulent procurement of his naturalization. He admitted that he was not living in marital union — or even in the same state — with his purported US citizen spouse; rather, but they separated in 2009 and Kassir moved to Florida. Kassir’s immigration fraud was uncovered during an investigation into his trafficking of counterfeit goods after he naturalized, for which he was convicted of conspiring to commit money laundering.

CAIR Challenges Anti-Muslim Caucus Members to Visit Local Mosques After ‘Modern-Day Klan Rally’ on House Floor

March 26, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced that it has sent a letter to members of the so-called “Sharia-Free America Caucus” challenging them to visit mosques in their districts and engage directly with American Muslim constituents following a hour-long House floor session in which members of the caucus delivered a series of speeches targeting Islam and Muslims in America.

[CAIR did not send an invitation to Randy Fine (R-FL) due to his alleged history of threats of violence, including reports that he threatened to “burn [a synagogue] to the ground” following a dispute, implicitly threatening to bomb Muslim members of Congress, and calling for the destruction of all “mainstream Muslims,” as well as reports of having to attend a court-ordered anger management class. CAIR also previously designated Fine as an anti-Muslim extremist due to his pattern of violent and dehumanizing rhetoric.]

Last month, CAIR designated the “Sharia-Free America Caucus” as an anti-Muslim hate group. This is the first time in CAIR’s 32-year history that the organization has designated a congressional caucus as an extremist organization.

In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert S. McCaw said:

“We are extending an open invitation to members of the so-called ‘Sharia-Free America Caucus’ to visit a mosque in their district and meet the American Muslims they claim to represent.

“Taking to the House floor for an hour of unhinged anti-Muslim rants amounts to a modern-day Klan rally, promoting hate and conspiracy theories and representing a dangerous abuse of public office.

“This hateful caucus is not engaged in legitimate policy debate but is instead seeking to stigmatize and marginalize American Muslims through a baseless witch hunts and smears.

“If these anti-Muslim caucus members are confident in their claims, they should have no hesitation meeting their own constituents in a mosque and engaging in a real conversation grounded in facts rather than fear.”

CAIR’s call comes amid growing concern over an increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric in political discourse. Multiple media outlets have documented a rise in Islamophobic statements and policy proposals, alongside a corresponding increase in reported anti-Muslim incidents nationwide.

Earlier this week, CAIR’s Alabama chapter invited Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen to visit a mosque after he criticized former Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl for attending a Ramadan interfaith dinner.

Earlier this month, CAIR called on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to stop protecting anti-Muslim fascists in his caucus after the speaker refused to condemn Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) for declaring that Muslims “do not belong in American society.”

Anti-Muslim rhetoric in Congress in recent months has included calls for the destruction of “mainstream Muslims” and the introduction of extreme legislation that, if enacted, would effectively ban the practice of Islam in the United States.

CAIR notes that using “sharia” as a code word for “Islam” was a tactic developed by anti-Muslim extremists in the 2000s to get around America’s Constitutional aversion to attacking entire faith traditions.

CAIR pointed to numerous recent statements by House Republicans documenting that Islam, not simply its religious practices, is the target of a growing number of House Republicans, many of them Members of the so called “Sharia-Free America” caucus:

In a post to X (formerly Twitter) on Feb. 17, 2026, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) wrote, “No more public displays of Islam please. It is not American.” Archive.

On March 9, 2026, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) posted the following to his X (formerly Twitter account), “Muslims don’t belong in American society. Pluralism is a lie.” Archive.

A “Sharia-Free America Caucus” graphic shared by Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) features Rep. Ogles saying, “Islam is a religion of violence, abuse of women, and ruthless political conquest. Its laws and practices have no place in American society. That’s why I joined the Sharia Free American [Sic] Caucus. Islam is conquering Europe, and I refuse to let it conquer America.”

Caucus co-founder Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) posted, “Islam is on the march and seeks world domination” to his X (formerly Twitter) account.

During a November 19, 2025 floor speech Rep. Self said he believes “Islam is a culture with a patina of religion.” He later also added, “There is no denying Islam’s intent to dominate Western civilization. Their stated objective is to destroy us from within.” Finally, Self believes, “While Western civilization has evolved, Islam has not. Islam is stuck in the eighth century.”

Caucus member Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) has discussed the need to “solve the Muslim problem,” and suggested the need to “destroy” “mainstream Muslims.” Fine has supported the starvation of Palestinian civilians, a war crime, and a religious cleansing of the U.S. via the mass removals of mainstream Muslims from the United States. Fine has faced backlash for implying dogs are preferable to Muslims.

During an interview with Newsmax, Rep. Brandon Gill said, “The reality is that Islam is a political ideology that is incompatible with the United States. It’s incompatible with our constitutional system and with Western civilization more broadly.”

In an interview with WBAP’s Morning News Podcast on February 3, 2026, Caucus co-founder Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) warned against the “Islamification of our country” which, according to Roy, “is inconsistent with Western civilization

CAIR recently released its 2026 Civil Rights Report “The Right to be Different,” which documents a pattern of public officials using their offices to narrow the definitions of what Americans can look like, say, or believe in 2025.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

CAIR Says Kennedy Center Honor for Bill Maher Highlights ‘Double Standards’ on Bigotry and Violence

March 26, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today said that the Kennedy Center’s planned award of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to Bill Maher “highlights the glaring double standards surrounding bigotry and violence that exist in our society.”

In a statement, CAIR said:

“The Kennedy Center’s decision to give this prestigious award to Bill Maher highlights the glaring double standards surrounding bigotry and violence that exist in our society.

“Mr. Maher would have never received this recognition if he were an antisemitic comedian who supported terrorism against Jewish-Americans or Israelis, but his open bigotry against Muslims and support for the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza are somehow perfectly acceptable.

“Until our society rejects all forms of hate and all forms of violence against innocent people as wrong, regardless of the victim, hypocrisy and inconsistency will continue to undermine the reputation of institutions like the Kennedy Center.”

According to CAIR’s most recent civil rights report, complaints of anti-Muslim bias and discrimination have continued to rise nationwide, reflecting an ongoing pattern of Islamophobia impacting communities across the country.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Trump's signature to appear on US dollars in first for sitting president

March 27, 2026

Archie Mitchell

Donald Trump is set to become the first sitting US president to have his signature on US banknotes, the treasury department has announced.

Trump's signature will appear alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, an unprecedented move that the department said would mark America's 250th anniversary.

"There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name," Bessent said. US banknotes have traditionally carried the signatures of treasury officials.

It is the latest move by the administration to associate Trump's name with a range of government programmes and public buildings.

The first $100 (£75) bills with the signatures of Trump and Bessent will be printed in June, with others to follow.

Notes currently being printed bear the signatures of former President Joe Biden's Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, and Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

It has been tradition since 1861 for the US treasurer's signature to appear on bank notes, a tradition that would end under the Trump administration's plans.

Ahead of the 250th anniversary, Bessent said printing currency bearing Trump's name would be a "powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country" and the president.

Current US Treasurer Brandon Beach vowed the country's currency will "continue to stand as a symbol of prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people".

This year sees the 250th anniversary of the formal declaration when the 13 original American colonies, later states, declared their independence from Britain.

The Democratic Party governor of California and long-time Trump critic Gavin Newsom responded to the announcement with an attack on the president's economic record.

"Now Americans will know exactly who to blame as they're paying more for groceries, gas, rent, and health care," he posted on social media.

Earlier this month, a federal arts commission approved a commemorative 24-karat gold coin bearing the image of Trump, also to celebrate America's 250th birthday.

During his first term in office, President Trump's name appeared on paper support cheques sent to millions of Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic.

APC Chieftain, Igbokwe Reveals Sponsors Of Terrorism In Nigeria

March 27, 2026

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has fingered opposition politicians as sponsors of insecurity in Nigeria.

Naija News reports that Igbokwe, in a post on his official Facebook page, claimed that the country’s security crisis is man-made.

He claimed that Nigerian politicians are sponsoring terrorism for their selfish political interests.

According to Igbokwe, when the opposition politicians lose an election, they instigate violence through uneducated street urchins to create insecurity and score cheap political points.

Igbokwe, however, expressed optimism that those plotting to plunge the nation into chaos will fail.

He wrote, “The so-called insecurity in Nigeria is man made. When hooligans and criminals lose elections, they sponsor uneducated street urchins to go create insecurity to score cheap political points. Evil cannot triumph over good. The will fail”.

Meanwhile, the presidency has stated that the security situation plaguing the country is giving President Bola Tinubu sleepless nights.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), Abdulillahi Yakassai, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

He stated that the fight against insurgency has become more challenging because insurgents have adopted guerrilla warfare.

According to him, “The security situation in some parts of the country has really been subdued, but there are some elements of new tactics coming up, like the one we see in Kwara State, very unfortunate.

“Even the president is having sleepless nights because every week you see him having a security council meeting in the Presidential Villa to see how to address this insecurity.”

Owo Church Attack Suspect Alleges Torture By DSS In Court

March 27, 2026

One of the suspects standing trial over the 2022 Owo church attack, Jamiu Abdulmalik, has alleged that operatives of the Department of State Services tortured him in custody to force a confession to a crime he said he did not commit.

Abdulmalik made the claim on Thursday while testifying before the Federal High Court in Abuja during the ongoing trial of five suspects charged by the Federal Government over the attack.

Naija News understands that Abdulmalik is standing trial alongside Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al-Qasim Idris, Abdulhaleem Idris and Momoh Otuho Abubakar.

The defendants were arrested in connection with the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, which left 41 worshippers dead and more than 140 others injured.

While giving his testimony, Abdulmalik, who described himself as a plumber and farmer, told the court that he was arrested in August 2022 while travelling from Ondo State to Kogi State.

According to him, armed operatives dressed in black and wearing masks stopped the vehicle conveying him and other passengers.

He said, “They asked for my name and phone, and I gave it to them.

“They pressed something on it and mentioned my full name, which I used for my NIN. They said I should come outside and that I am under arrest. They handcuffed me and tied my face.”

Abdulmalik further alleged that he was taken to the DSS command in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, where he was subjected to inhumane treatment.

He told the court that he was hung at the facility and left tied up until he urinated on himself.

He further stated, “When we got there, I was left in the vehicle for some time before they brought me down. They carried me straight to where they hung me.

“They didn’t bring me down until I started urinating on my body. After that, they left me for a while and later took me to the cell.”

He also claimed that DSS operatives assaulted him and poured water on his face during interrogation.

“While I was there, they were punching me and pouring water on my face. They said they were pushing me because I was lying,” he said.

The defendant told the court that the operatives repeatedly pressured him to admit involvement in the attack.

He said they attempted to link him with terrorist activities in his community.

“One officer later came and asked them to stop and said they should bring me down and confront me with evidence instead of making me shout,” he added.

Abdulmalik said he denied any wrongdoing during the questioning.

“They asked if I wanted to say it by force or gently, and I said I cannot say what I do not know,” he told the court.

He added that the operatives showed him a photograph of a school building in his village and claimed it was being used to train individuals for terrorist activities.

“They said I was a student of one of the defendants and that we were being trained to terrorise the community. I told them I am not a student there but a plumber who farms in Ondo,” he said.

Following the testimony, the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, adjourned the case to April 1 and 2 for continuation of the hearing.

Islamic Cleric Fingered In Coup Plot Against Tinubu Alive, In Protective Custody – Sources

March 26, 2026

Embattled Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Khalifa Sani Abdulkadir, who was earlier declared missing by his family, is reportedly alive and currently being held in protective custody by federal security agencies.

A senior intelligence official disclosed to PRNigeria that the cleric is under investigation by a joint team of the Nigerian Military and the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged links to a suspected coup plot against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the intelligence source, the investigation was triggered by a financial transaction traced to the cleric’s bank account.

The official revealed that about 2 million was transferred into Sheikh Khalifa’s account by a military officer allegedly implicated in an attempted coup.

“Sheikh Khalifa is alive and healthy in protective custody. His arrest followed the discovery of funds in his bank account transferred from one of the suspected military officers involved in the attempted coup,” the source said.

The official added that the cleric would remain in custody until the investigation is concluded.

However, sources close to the cleric’s family have disputed the allegations, insisting the transaction was a routine spiritual offering.

According to the family, the military officer obtained Sheikh Khalifa’s bank account details through one of his students and transferred the money as a request for prayers and blessings.

“There was no political discussion, no criminal intention, and nothing beyond a request for prayers,” a family source said.

The disappearance of the scholar had earlier sparked nationwide concern after he reportedly travelled to Abuja to address the sudden freezing of his bank account.

His family said they lost contact with him shortly after the trip, raising fears about his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the cleric’s legal team has filed a Fundamental Rights suit seeking his release.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/55/2026, has already been heard twice at the Federal High Court in Abuja, on February 18 and March 13, 2026.

The presiding judge adjourned the matter to April 10, 2026, for final judgment.

The intelligence source indicated that Sheikh Khalifa could eventually face prosecution alongside other suspects once the investigation is completed.

“He would soon be arraigned in court for prosecution after the completion of the investigation alongside others,” the official said.

Former Zamfara CPG Commander, Mohammed Dies From Bandit Attack Injuries

March 27, 2026

A former Commander of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards, Brigadier General Lawal Bature Mohammed (retd.), is dead.

The retired officer, popularly known as Dan Gusau, reportedly died from injuries sustained during a bandit attack last year.

The late brigadier general was said to have sustained gunshot wounds when bandits attacked him during an operation in the state.

Following the incident, he was flown to Egypt for medical treatment.

While he was receiving treatment, former Assistant Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Shehu Daligent (retd.), was appointed as the new commander of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards.

Recently, Governor Dauda Lawal decorated relatives of Community Protection Guards who lost their lives in the line of duty and pledged continued support for their families.

In a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor also decorated 20 members of the Community Protection Guards for outstanding service.

According to the statement, the guards were recognised for performing “extraordinarily well in discharging their duties.”

The funeral prayer for the late brigadier general was held at Sabon Gari area of Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, on Thursday evening.

He was subsequently buried according to Islamic rites.

Dabbagh partners Companion to distribute food, cash to Muslims

March 27, 2026

The United Kingdom-based charity organization, Dabbagh Welfare Trust, in partnership with The Companion, an association of Muslim professionals in business and the professions in Nigeria, have distributed food items and cash to Muslim families.

The exercise, conducted under the Nigeria Food Appeal initiative, took place on Wednesday, March 18, at the Sports Centre in Agege, Lagos, directly benefiting 500 families.

The food packages included essential items such as 25 kg of rice, 10 kg of beans, 10 kg of garri, palm oil, groundnut oil, tomato paste, and dates. The support aimed to ease the burden of fasting and ensure families were well prepared to celebrate Eid with dignity.

The humanitarian programme, initiated by UK-based Imam, Sheikh Mohammed Mahmoud, began in December 2025 during the month of Rajab and continued through Shaaban into Ramadan, spanning three months of sustained outreach. During this period, about 1,500 families across Nigeria have benefited from the initiative.

Speaking at the event, the Operations Manager of The Companion Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation, Mallam Mustafa Shafi’i, described the exercise as the third edition of the initiative.

He explained that the partnership was conceived following discussions with Sheikh Mahmoud during his visit to Nigeria late last year, when both parties explored ways of supporting vulnerable Muslims through structured food bank interventions.

Shafi’i noted that the initiative aligns with similar food appeal programmes already being implemented by the foundation in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world.

He added that the first phase of the distribution was carried out in December 2025 during Rajab, after which it was extended to Shaaban and subsequently to Ramadan to sustain support for beneficiaries throughout the fasting period. Plans are also in place to continue the programme beyond Ramadan as part of a long term humanitarian effort.

According to him, the project was inspired by the belief that effective propagation of Islam is closely tied to the welfare of the people.

He explained that individuals struggling to meet basic needs are less likely to engage meaningfully with religious teachings, highlighting the importance of feeding as a foundation for spiritual outreach.

According to him, “With 100 families benefiting in the current phase and a total of 300 beneficiaries reached across the three editions, the initiative is estimated to have impacted about 1,500 individuals, assuming an average of five persons per household.”

Executive Secretary of The Companion, Dr Rafiu Alabi, expressed appreciation to Dabbagh Welfare Trust for putting smiles on the faces of needy Muslims ahead of Eid-il-Fitr celebrations.

He noted that the intervention was timely to ensure that beneficiary families had sufficient food at home to celebrate Sallah with ease and dignity. Dr Alabi added that the choice of The Companion by the sponsor underscores the organisation’s credibility and the trust it has earned over time.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and highlighted that the platform continues to enable the group to contribute meaningfully to the growth and welfare of Islam both in Nigeria and globally.

Beneficiaries, both male and female, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the organisers for the timely support. Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Soyeye Aminah, a beneficiary from Oshodi, said: “We received different types of food to help us prepare for sallah, and we also received transport fare. I am very grateful to the organisers for this opportunity and their support.

“Given the difficult economic situation in Nigeria, this initiative is very timely and appreciated. It ensures that we have something to eat during and after Eid, and it brings relief and joy to our families,” she added.

Muslim-Muslim ticket’ll spell doom for APC in 2027, Niger APC chieftain, Vatsa, cautions Tinubu, others

27 March 2026

Former commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism and chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa, has warned that any attempt by the party to come up with the idea of Muslims-Muslim ticket will likely spell doom for it in 2027.

Speaking to newsmen in Minna ahead of the party national convention, yesterday, the former publicity secretary of the party in the state said the political arithmetics and the current political atmosphere in the country strongly point to the fact that the 2023 Muslim-Muslim ticket can no longer deliver the party. “If that experiment worked in 2023, it will no longer work in 2027. The opposition will capitalise on that to create upset like we did to PDP in 2015.”

Vatsa argued that despite the array of defectors into the ruling party, it cannot change the mindset of the people if the party sticks to the 2023 Muslim-Muslim arrangement, pointing out that “Nigerians might not subscribe to this arrangement this time around.”

He believed that the Muslim population in the north no longer fancy the arrangement as it has not translated to any meaningful change in their daily lives and, therefore, would be counterproductive to go into the 2027 general election with the same arrangement.

“As I speak right now, majority of Nigerians, especially our Muslim brothers from the north, no longer believe in the Muslim-Muslim ticket. The outcome of that arrangement did not change anything in their lives.

“To be sincere with you, the north believed that they are the victims of Tinubu’s leadership. That is the general perception in the north where we got our votes from in 2023.

“If the party decides to go ahead with the Muslim-Muslim ticket, I am afraid it might spell doom. Let us not be deceived by the ongoing mass defection by governors and National Assembly members, it will not deliver the party.

“Majority of the defectors are only looking for a platform to contest the 2027 elections, not that they are ready to work for the party the way some of us put our lives on the line and work for its emergence in 2015.

“If you like, let all the 36 states governors defect to APC, that does not guarantee you winning the election. It is also not an assurance that you can successfully rig an election. No.

“Experience has shown that if the people are not with you, there is no way you can rig an election. The governors and the National Assembly members cannot go to the polling units to rig elections for you, they need the support of the people. You must be popular among the people to be able to get their support.

“I’m not talking about the presidency alone, even at the state levels, the party should not take the people for granted because the opposition parties might take advantage of our wrong calculations.

“The outcome of the party national convention and the primaries that will follow will be another litmus test for the peaceful co-existence in the party. The ability to manage the post convention and party primaries crisis will determine the success of the party.”

Vatsa, who belongs to the defunct ACN bloc that formed alliance with CPC and ANPP to give birth to the APC also warned the party to be vigilant over the mass defection into the party, stressing that “when the boat is overloaded, it might capsize.

“So far, the ward, local government and state congresses have been successful and I pray too that the national convention will be rancour-free but we must be vigilant. We must watch closely the activities of the defectors. We must learn a lesson from the mistakes of some political parties that could not manage their success. We must try hard to avoid anything that will lead to fragmentation in the party; if not, our situation will be worse than what some political parties are going through at the moment,” he warned

Algeria and Spain discuss increasing gas supplies to the European nation

March 27, 2026

Spain’s Foreign Minister met with his Algerian counterpart on Thursday during which they discussed the possibility of Algiers increasing its supply of natural gas to the European nation.

The visit by Spain’s top diplomat to Algeria comes as the Iran conflict upends energy markets, hitting supplies and increasing price volatility, leaving some countries to look elsewhere for their gas.

"Algeria is a stable, reliable and consistent gas supplier. For the past three years, it has been the leading supplier of natural gas to our country,” said José Manuel Albares Bueno.

The Spanish foreign minister said Madrid and Algiers “agreed to strengthen this strategic partnership in the field of energy".

Spanish gas grid operator Enagas says Algerian gas made up more than 29 per cent of the country's total imports in the first two months of the year.

Spain is linked to Algeria by a gas pipeline called MedGaz which is operating at full capacity but which experts say could be increased.

In the face of disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East, other countries are also asking Algeria for more gas.

Malaysia condemns Israel’s attack on Iran, calls for justice

27 Mar 2026

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim strongly condemns Israel’s attack on Iran, stresses targeting civilians violates international law and calls for a just, lasting peace.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s attack on Iran, which he stated was supported by the United States.

In a Facebook post, Anwar stressed that any act targeting civilians constitutes a clear violation of international law and humanitarian principles.

He extended Malaysia’s deepest condolences to the people of Iran following the significant loss of senior leadership figures in political, military and security roles, as well as innocent lives.

Anwar revealed he has contacted the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, to obtain the latest updates on the escalating conflict in West Asia.

“I also note Iran’s readiness to negotiate, on the condition of a definitive end to the war,” he said.

The Prime Minister cautioned that past experience shows ceasefires without firm guarantees risk repeating cycles of violence, as seen in Gaza and Lebanon.

He stressed that peace efforts must be grounded in justice, accountability and sustained commitment.

“Malaysia believes that lasting peace requires a comprehensive resolution to ensure the security of all parties and restore human dignity in West Asia,” Anwar said.

He added that he appreciates President Pezeshkian’s recognition of Malaysia’s support and remains committed to strengthening this solidarity.

Anwar concluded by calling for prayers that the conflict in West Asia will reach a peaceful resolution soon.

Malaysia backs ceasefire efforts for Afghanistan-Pakistan stability

27 Mar 2026

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports diplomatic efforts for lasting stability between Afghanistan and Pakistan, grounded in compassion and solidarity.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia hopes ceasefire efforts between Afghanistan and Pakistan will lead to lasting regional stability. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this position during a telephone conversation with Afghanistan’s Acting Prime Minister, Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund.

Anwar said they discussed South Asian developments, particularly the tensions and ongoing ceasefire efforts between the two nations. He detailed Malaysia’s approach in a Facebook post following the call.

Malaysia will continue playing an active role through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation regarding Afghanistan. This involves assessing recognition of the de facto authorities while upholding justice, inclusivity, and rights protections.

“Our approach remains anchored in a balance between principle and pragmatism,” Anwar said. He described it as fostering hope and demonstrating leadership for peace.

Malaysia remains consistent in supporting diplomatic efforts by other nations. Anwar specifically cited roles played by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye.

Humanitarian assistance is also being strengthened through strategic cooperation. Anwar noted partnerships with Global Peace Mission and MERCY Malaysia.

These initiatives focus on improving educational infrastructure and providing medical training. They also aim to enhance disaster preparedness in Afghanistan.

“These initiatives reflect Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening solidarity within the ummah,” Anwar stated. During the call, he also conveyed Aidilfitri greetings to the Afghan leader and its people.

Floating mosque in Yan set to open in April, tipped as key tourism draw, says Ahmad Maslan

27 Mar 2026

YAN, March 27 — The floating mosque in Kampung Ruat here, the project scheduled for full completion next month, is set to become one of the district’s main attractions.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the project, taken over by a new contractor in July 2023, involves a total construction cost exceeding RM12.95 million.

“The Public Works Department (JKR) has been appointed as the implementing agency for this project. The construction of this mosque is part of the government’s initiative to provide safe and comfortable worship facilities for the local community.

“In addition, the mosque has the potential to emerge as a new tourism attraction for the state,” he said after inspecting the progress of the floating mosque project here today.

Ahmad said that the main scope of work includes the construction of the mosque building, as well as supporting structures such as an arch, water tank tower, azan tower, a compact Tenaga Nasional Berhad substation, and a Small Sewage Treatment System (SSTS).

He said the handover of the project from JKR to the Kedah Islamic Religious Council (MAIK) is expected to take place at the end of next month, after which the mosque will be opened fully to the public.

“The Ministry of Works hopes that, upon completion, the floating mosque will serve not only as a house of worship but also as a symbol of development and community well-being in the Yan district,” he added. — Bernama

Malaysia eyes Petronas’ global investments for fuel supply buffer as US-Iran crisis worsens

By Muhammad Yusry

27 Mar 2026

SHAH ALAM, March 27 — Malaysia is exploring ways to leverage Petronas’s diversified global investments in order to secure alternative supplies of fuel to stability supply in the country, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He explained that the national oil company's significant presence in regions beyond the Gulf states, including in the Americas, gives Putrajaya more options to ensure both stable returns and sufficient supply for domestic needs.

“For now, supplies are still sufficient until May, but we are also seeking alternative options,” Anwar told reporters after Friday prayers here.

“This reflects the strength of Petronas, whose investments are diversified — not only in the Gulf states but also in Brazil, Suriname and Canada.”

The prime minister said the government is actively exploring how to capitalise on this global portfolio to secure national revenue while simultaneously safeguarding local fuel requirements.

Anwar reiterated that while current fuel supplies are assured until May, authorities are monitoring the volatile situation daily.

He added that Malaysia’s position remains relatively manageable compared to several neighbouring countries but cautioned against complacency.

“For the time being, praise be to God, when we observe the difficult situation in several countries around us, we should be grateful and not become complacent or overly preoccupied with political matters, but instead focus on safeguarding the wellbeing of the people and the nation,” he said.

A US-backed attack by Israel on Iran has plunged the Gulf region into turmoil, leading to the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz and caused a global energy crisis.

Billions for nuclear? Charles Santiago says betting big on solar is better for Malaysia’s future

27 Mar 2026

PETALING JAYA, March 27 — Former Klang MP Charles Santiago today called on Malaysia to set a more ambitious renewable energy (RE) goal of at least 50 per cent by 2030, arguing that the current national target of 35 per cent is insufficient and leaves the nation vulnerable to global energy shocks.

Speaking at a media conference on the impact of geopolitical conflict on climate change, Santiago, who is a former chairman of the National Water Services Commission (Span), said that while Malaysia has made progress, its continued reliance on fossil fuels is a risk amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

“Given the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the need for greater energy independence, increasing domestic renewable energy capacity is essential for long-term resilience and sustainability,” he stated.

Santiago also questioned the country’s exploration of nuclear energy, specifically small modular reactors, to power the growing number of data centres.

He pointed to significant hurdles, including complex regulations, high costs of up to US$3 billion (RM12 billion) for larger reactors, and a lack of public consultation.

Instead of allocating billions to nuclear, he argued that a more practical approach would be to redirect those funds into scaling up Malaysia’s solar energy ecosystem to achieve or even exceed the 50 per cent RE target.

Other panellists at the event highlighted the global barriers hindering a swift energy transition.

Lidy Nacpil, coordinator of the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development, explained that crippling debt in developing nations often cancels out the benefits of climate finance.

She said that even when these countries receive funds, the money is frequently offset by large debt repayments to the Global North, perpetuating their economic dependence on fossil fuels.

“We are putting forward several important solutions. One of these is debt cancellation, a long-standing demand that many of us have been advocating for over decades,” Nacpil said.

Meanwhile, Harjeet Singh, Asia lead of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, argued that global climate agreements have failed for 30 years because they do not directly confront the root cause of the crisis: the fossil fuel industry itself.

“Terms such as coal, oil, and gas are not explicitly addressed in the core frameworks of global climate governance,” Singh said.

“This is not a coincidence. It reflects the significant influence of the fossil fuel industry.”

He explained that this has resulted in global dependence on fossil fuels remaining stagnant at around 80 per cent for the past three decades, with renewable energy only meeting new demand rather than replacing existing sources.

* A previous version of the article incorrectly identified Charles Santiago as the present chairman of the National Water Services Commission. The error has since been corrected.

Anwar confirms Iran granting safe passage for Malaysian oil tankers through Hormuz strait

26 Mar 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 — Iran is letting Malaysian tankers pass through the Strait of Hormuz after talks with Iranian, Turkish and other regional leaders, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday.

Speaking on national television, Anwar said he spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as Egyptian and Turkish counterparts and other leaders in the Gulf region.

“We’re now in the process of releasing the Malaysian oil tankers and the workers involved so that they can continue their journey home,” Anwar said, thanking Pezeshkian.

Anwar added that, thanks to production by Malaysian petroleum giant Petronas, “We are in a far better position.”

Petronas last year produced around two million barrels of oil a day, according to the latest company figures.

But Anwar warned that food supplies will be disrupted and that “prices will certainly rise”.

“The same goes for fertiliser, and of course oil and gas,” Anwar said.

He also announced a range of measures, including a reduction in the quota of subsidised fuel for Malaysian citizens and new diesel purchase limits in the eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak, as part of tighter controls to curb hoarding and smuggling of subsidised fuel. — AFP

We must work across party lines and face this crisis as one nation: Jamaat ameer

27 Mar 2026

Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has called for an immediate end to the ongoing war and urged all parties to seek peaceful solutions, warning of its growing impact on Bangladesh’s economy and public life.

In a post on his verified Facebook page this morning, he said the escalating conflict involving Iran has sent shockwaves through the global economy, with Bangladesh already feeling the strain.

He noted that fuel shortages have led to long queues, rising prices, and slowing industrial activity, while ordinary families are facing deep uncertainty about their immediate future.

“As the country resumes full-scale activities on March 29 following the Eid holidays, we are confronting a crisis that threatens our transport system, industries, agriculture, and the daily dignity of millions,” he said.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the Jamaat ameer called on all political parties to rise above their differences and act in the interest of the people.

“The people who placed their trust in us and continue to endure hardship deserve better. This is not the time for political point-scoring; this is the time for unity,” he said.

He stressed that political divisions must not stand in the way of addressing a national crisis, urging leaders to work together to protect the people and stabilise the economy.

“Whatever divides us politically is insignificant compared to what unites us as Bangladeshis. We must stand together, work across party lines, and face this crisis as one nation,” he added.

Khalilur raises concern over oil crisis impact during meeting with Guterres

27 Mar 2026

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has raised the challenges faced by developing and vulnerable countries due to the ongoing global oil crisis during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in New York yesterday.

According to a statement from the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, Guterres reaffirmed his unwavering support and solidarity with Bangladesh.

The US-Israel war on Iran, Tehran’s retaliation, and the choking of the Strait of Hormuz -- through which 20 percent of the world’s fuel is transported -- have already driven up fuel prices.

At the meeting, the UN Secretary-General extended warm congratulations to the newly formed government of Bangladesh. He also highly commended the country for its continued humanitarian leadership and generosity in sheltering forcibly displaced Rohingya people.

Around 1.2 million Rohingya are currently being sheltered by Bangladesh in Cox's Bazar and Bhashanchar.

The discussions also covered a range of contemporary global issues.

On behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Khalilur extended an invitation to the UN secretary-general to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. Guterres welcomed the invitation.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Nations in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.

Dhaka urges action against slavery, oppression

27 Mar 2026

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has called for intensified global efforts to confront slavery and oppression, urging renewed international action while addressing a UN General Assembly commemorative meeting.

He made the call while speaking at a meeting marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday, according to a message received by BSS yesterday morning.

The foreign minister paid solemn tribute to the millions of victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade and honoured the courageous resilience of those who resisted it.

Describing the transatlantic slave trade as a permanent scar on humanity, Dr Rahman reaffirmed Bangladesh’s firm stance against slavery, apartheid, genocide and all forms of oppression.

He said the Constitution of Bangladesh rejects imperialism, colonialism, racism and discrimination, reiterating the country’s solidarity with oppressed peoples worldwide.

Recalling the centenary of the 1926 Slavery Convention and nearly 80 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he noted that although slavery has been abolished, its legacy persists in modern society, economy and politics, with various forms still existing worldwide.

The foreign minister stressed that action must go beyond remembrance, calling for renewed efforts to combat human trafficking, coordinated measures in digital forensics and greater investment in education and dialogue on the human and civilisational costs of slavery.

EU Announces 250,000 Euros in Aid for Vulnerable Afghans

By Khaama Press

March 26, 2026

The European Union in Afghanistan has announced 250,000 euros in humanitarian assistance to support the country’s most vulnerable people.

The EU said on Thursday, March 26, that the funding comes in response to a rise in displacement caused by intensified fighting and to support communities still affected by last year’s earthquakes.

According to the EU, the assistance will reach around 70,000 people in the provinces of Khost, Kunar, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Paktika and Paktia.

The funding will support the Afghanistan Red Crescent in providing food, cash assistance, emergency shelter, primary healthcare, clean water and other essential services.

The aid forms part of the EU’s contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund.

The announcement comes as Afghanistan continues to face overlapping humanitarian pressures, including poverty, displacement, natural disasters and a weakened economy.

The EU says it remains one of the largest humanitarian donors to Afghanistan and allocated more than 161 million euros in aid during 2025.

At the same time, millions of Afghans continue to face long-term social and economic hardship beyond immediate humanitarian needs.

Restrictions on girls’ secondary and university education have sharply limited access to learning, leaving many young women without clear academic or professional futures.

Employment restrictions, especially on women working in many sectors and aid-related roles, have also deepened household poverty and reduced opportunities for families already struggling to survive.

The new EU funding may offer short-term relief for thousands, but Afghanistan’s wider crisis is likely to persist without broader progress in education, employment and stability.

EU lawmakers back tougher migrant return rules, including offshore hubs

By Fidel Rahmati

March 27, 2026

EU lawmakers backed tougher migration rules allowing rejected asylum seekers to be sent to return hubs outside the bloc.

European Parliament lawmakers voted on Thursday in favor of a tougher migration proposal that would make it easier for European Union countries to establish “return hubs” outside the bloc for rejected asylum seekers. The measure passed by 389 votes to 206, with 32 abstentions, moving it a step closer to final approval.

The proposal would allow EU governments to send migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected to centers in third countries, even if those countries are not the migrants’ homelands. Supporters say the plan is needed to strengthen deportation systems and deter irregular migration, while critics argue it could undermine refugee protections and human rights safeguards.

The vote reflected a broader rightward shift in European politics, with center-right and far-right lawmakers pushing for stricter migration controls as public concern over immigration has fueled electoral gains for anti-immigration parties across the bloc. Several countries, including Greece, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Denmark, are already exploring agreements with African countries to host such facilities.

Supporters of the bill say the current system is failing because only about 20% of migrants ordered to leave the EU are actually returned. The proposal would also introduce tougher penalties for those who refuse to comply with return orders, including longer detention and entry bans.

Backers of the measure argue the reform is necessary to restore control over migration and send a clear deterrent message. Critics, however, say the centers could expose migrants to abuse, weak legal oversight and possible detention in prison-like conditions far from EU protections.

The vote follows a broader tightening of EU asylum policy this year. In February, lawmakers approved changes allowing asylum seekers to be transferred to “safe” third countries even if they had no previous connection to those states, a move rights groups said risked breaching international refugee law.

The debate is also unfolding against a grim humanitarian backdrop. The International Organization for Migration said nearly 8,000 people died or went missing on migration routes worldwide in 2025, including more than 2,100 in the Mediterranean, underlining the deadly risks faced by people trying to reach Europe.

Thursday’s vote highlights how migration remains one of Europe’s most divisive political issues, with governments under pressure to toughen border controls while rights groups warn that deterrence-driven policies risk eroding the EU’s commitment to asylum and international protection.

Unity, Coordination Key to Successful Development Initiatives, Minister Emphasizes

March 26, 2026

KABUL: Mullah Abdul Latif Mansoor, the country’s Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, has stressed that unity and effective coordination are essential for the success of development projects across the country.

During his visit to Logar province, Mansoor met with local officials and community representatives to assess ongoing development initiatives and ensure that local needs and priorities are being addressed, according to a statement from the ministry on Wednesday.

He emphasized that following leadership guidance and fostering cooperation among institutions are critical to delivering results efficiently.
