Ahead Of Holi, Mosques Covered With Sheets On Ram
Baraat, Laat Saaheb Procession Routes in Bareilly
A
mosque in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh covered with black plastic sheets ahead of
Holi celebrations
-----
March 24, 2024
All mosques on the Ram Baraat route in Bareilly and
the Laat Saheb procession path in Shahjahanpur have been covered with tarpaulin
and plastic sheets to prevent them from being smeared with Holi colours, which
could affect communal harmony in the two Uttar Pradesh districts, authorities
informed.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Bareilly) Ghule
Sushil Chandrabhan led a police march along the proposed route of the Ram
Baraat which will be taken out from Narsingh Temple on Sunday. The Brahmpuri
Ramlila Committee has been organising the yatra over the years amid heavy
police cover, and as a precaution all mosques on the route have been covered
with tarpaulin.
“We held a meeting with clerics in the district on
Friday and they have been told that the mosques will be properly covered so
that no mischievous element does anything to disturb communal harmony. All
clerics expressed satisfaction with our arrangements. A posse of police
personnel will accompany the yatra which, after passing through many areas in
the city, will return to the Narsingh Temple,” the SSP said.
In Shahjahanpur, a Laat Saheb ki Baraat is taken out
on Holi from the Phoolmati Devi Temple. It features a unique tradition,
reportedly prevalent since the 18th century, in which revellers hurl footwear
at the procession featuring a buffalo cart and a hapless man. Earlier, the
procession was called the Nawab Saab ki Baraat and the person sitting on the
cart was depicted as a Nawab, but since Independence, it is known as Laat Saheb
ki Baraat in which the person on the cart is portrayed as a Britisher.
Mosques located along the procession route remain
covered with plastic sheets and the law and order machinery in Shahjahanpur is
on high alert to avert any untoward incident.
“The baraat is a unique tradition here and I have been
witnessing it since childhood. The person who sits in the buffalo cart is
chosen nearly a month ahead and is housed at a secret location for the period,
during which he is well-fed. People viewing the procession from their houses
hurl footwear at him from their balcony. Once the baraat ends, the person is
given new clothes and money by the organisers,” Gopal Sharma, a resident of
Siddhivinayak Colony in Shahjahanpur, told The Indian Express over the phone.

‘Stop Having Multiple Children, Practice Monogamy’:
Assam CM’s Rules for Muslim Migrants from Bangladesh
Disincentives and incentives
like those in the proposed two-child norm could potentially be counter productive.
Credit: Reuters
------
24-03-2024
New Delhi: Assam chief minister Hemant Biswa Sarma on
Saturday (March 23) said that Bengali-speaking Muslim migrants from Bangladesh
“should stop having more than two children” and practice monogamy if they want
to be recognised as indigenous to the state.
While questioning how the Bengali-speaking Muslims
could claim to be indigenous if they encroached on ‘Satras’ (Vaishnavite
monasteries) land, Sarma said, “If they want to become indigenous, they cannot
marry off their minor daughters.”
“Instead of sending your children to madrassas,
educate them to become doctors and engineers if you want to be called
indigenous,” Sarma said, adding, they should also start sending their daughters
to schools and give them the right over their fathers’ properties, the Times of
India reported.
“These are the differences between them and the
indigenous people of the state. If they can give up these practices and imbibe
the culture of Assamese people, at some point of time they too can become
indigenous,” Sarma said.
Assam’s Muslim population, second largest in the
country after Jammu and Kashmir, comes from two ethnicities – Bengali-speaking
and Bangladesh-origin migrant Muslims and Assamese-speaking indigenous Muslims.
In 2022, around 40 lakh Assamese-speaking Muslims were
recognised as “indigenous Assamese Muslims” and a sub-group of the greater
native Assamese community.
The cabinet-approved ‘indigenous’ Assamese Muslims,
who do not have any history of migration from Bangladesh, comprise five groups
– Goria, Moria, Jolah (only the ones living in tea gardens), Desi and Syed
(only the Assamese-speaking).

Islamic State Releases Photo Of Alleged Attackers In Russia

-----
23 March 2024
CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamic State released on Saturday a
photo of what it said were the four attackers behind a shooting rampage that
killed at least 143 people in a concert hall near Moscow on Friday, the
militant group's Amaq news agency said on Telegram.
"The attack comes within the context of a raging
war between the Islamic State and countries fighting Islam," Amaq added in
a statement citing security sources.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack
but there were indications that Russia was pursuing a Ukrainian link, despite
emphatic denials from Ukrainian officials that Kyiv had anything to do with it.
Russian authorities said on Saturday they had arrested
11 people including four suspected gunmen in connection with the attack.

Over 10% Of Pro-Palestinian Brits: Expel Jews From The
Middle East – Poll

MARCH 23, 2024
Some 11% of pro-Palestinian British adults support the
expulsion of Jews from the Middle East, a YouGov poll published on Wednesday
found.
The survey found that of the 29% of Brits who said
they had more sympathy for the Palestinians than Israelis in the current
conflict, 11% held a favorable view of Hamas. This equates to 4% of all British
citizens.
Hamas is a proscribed Terrorist organization under UK
law, and breaching the Terrorism Act (2000) can result in up to 14 years
imprisonment.
Additionally, 14% of pro-Palestinian respondees said
that they felt that Hamas’s October 7 terror attack was justified. This equates
to 1 in 20 Brits holding this view.
On October 7, Hamas invaded Israel and murdered over
1200 people while taking 253 more captive. The UN Special Representative of the
Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict confirmed that there was
significant evidence of Hamas committing acts of rape, sexual violence, and
necrophilia during the attack.
Asked whether a solution to bringing peace to the
Middle East was to expel all Jews from the region, 11% of pro-Palestinian Brits
confirmed that they thought it was. This equates to 5% of the general
population.
Asked whether a two-state solution would bring peace
to the region, 83% of the pro-Palestinian respondees said it would, while 8%
opposed two-states.
A recent poll by the Palestinian Centre for Policy and
Survey Research (PCPSR) found that the number of Gazans who support a two-state
solution has nearly doubled since December, from 35% to 62%. However, only 34%
of Palestinians in the West Bank support two states.
A further 87% of pro-Israel Brits said that Israel’s
military actions in Gaza have been justified, while 8% answered they did not
think it was.
Nearly one-quarter (24%) of pro-Israel respondees said
that they thought expelling Palestinians from the region would bring peace. 60%
opposed this. More pro-Israel respondees (66%) thought a two-state solution
would bring peace.
People who supported the conservative party were the
most likely to be sympathetic to the Israeli side (27%) and second most likely
to have equal sympathy for both sides (31%.)
Those who support the Labour Party were least likely
to have sympathy with the Israeli side, with only 5% favouring Israel and 22%
saying they have equal sympathy for both sides.
10% of respondents in the age group 18-24 had a favourable
opinion of Hamas, which dropped to only 4% in the ascending age group category
of 25-49. In age groups 50-64 and 65+, only 3% held favourable views of Hamas.
Over one-in-10 (13%) of 18-24 year old respondents
said that October 7th was justified. This percentage dropped to 6% in the next
ascending age category and halved to 3% among those aged over 50.

Will Adeel Mangi become first Muslim American Appeals
Court judge?
Adeel Abdullah Mangi is a
Pakistani-American lawyer. — Provided by the reporter
-----
By Nasim Haider
March 24, 2024
Adeel A Mangi’s confirmation as the first Muslim
American Federal Appeals Court judge is hanging by a thread. His supporters
believe that "Islamophobia" is the only reason as its "poisoning
the very minds of those who are supposed to stand up and vote for him".
The Harvard and Oxford graduated litigation attorney
has highly impressive credentials. Yet, he is accused of being an
"anti-Semite and mingles with supporters of terrorists and cop
killers".
However, "Mangi's only crime seems to be his
religious affiliations" as no evidence is presented to prove such
"baseless and abhorrent allegations" against him.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham (South Carolina),
the top Republican at the Senate Judiciary Committee has even asked President
Biden to withdraw Mangi’s nomination. It is despite the fact that the senator
for 30 years has visited Pakistan and is close to some influential Pakistani
Americans as well.
Senator Graham says that, "It is clear to me that
concerns about this nomination are widespread, not just among Republicans in
the Senate. I urge President Biden to seriously listen to these concerns and
withdraw Mangi’s nomination."
The ranking Republican quoted The Police Conference of
New York, every Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, 10 Republican
members of Congress who represent Third Circuit and some Jewish organisations
as opposed to Mangi’s confirmation. However, he didn’t cite any solid evidence
against the concerns expressed.
On the other side of the Isle, Democrat Senator Cory
Booker has labelled accusations against the Pakistani American as a clear case
of witch hunt and Islamophobia.
In his emotional speech at the Senate floor that
lasted 35 minutes, Booker passionately pleaded for Adeel Mangi’s confirmation.
For him, Mangi is a star in the legal profession.

Iran Alerted US Before Soleimani Revenge Strike, Zarif
Affirms
24-03-2024
Iran’s former foreign minister Mohammad JavadZarif has
confirmed that Tehran informed the US before launching missiles at an Iraqi
base housing American forces in January 2020.
The ballistic missile attack came as retaliation days
after the United States killed IRGC's Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in a
drone strike in Baghdad. Zarif also claims that he and then-President Hassan
Rouhani heard about the missile attack after the Americans were informed
through Iraqi officials.
In his new book, Mohammad JavadZarif explains the
buildup to the attack on Ain al-Asad Base in January 8, 2020, codenamed
Operation Martyr Soleimani. Ten days after the publication of the book, social
media circulated a photo of one of the pages of the memoir that detailed the
moment when Zarif was informed of the attack.
“The last decision I heard [after Soleimani's killing]
was that there is no rush for a response, and the most efficient method was
thought to be the one pursued by Hezbollah in Lebanon, creating condition to
exhaust the enemy,” Zarif says in the book, a memoir of the eight years
(2013-2021) he served as foreign minister.

Passenger Boat Seized In Iran For Violating Ramadan
Rules
24-03-2024
A passenger boat was seized in the waters of Bushehr
Province, south of Iran in the Persian Gulf on grounds of non-compliance with
religious rules during Ramadan.
AbdollahKhosravi, the commander of Bushehr Border
Patrol, confirmed the seizure, stating, "This recreational vessel has been
seized in order to enforce Islamic principles and the sanctity of the month of
Ramadan." However, specific details regarding the violation that prompted
the seizure were not disclosed by Khosravi.
Ramadan, a month marked by fasting, sees heightened
vigilance from authorities, particularly in cases where it coincides with other
significant events such as Norouz, the Persian New Year during which people are
in a celebratory mood.
Norouz trips, particularly to the southern regions of
Iran renowned for their favorable climate, are always under police scrutiny
during the period.

As Gaza is destroyed, Israel is killing dozens of
children in the West Bank
ArwaMahdawi
23 Mar 2024
“The depth of the horror surpasses our ability to
describe it,” James Elder, a spokesperson with the United Nations Children’s
Fund (Unicef), said after travelling the length of Gaza this week. There is
nothing left: Republicans who called for Gaza to be turned into a “parking lot”
have got their wish. Amid the ruins, a traumatized and trapped population are
being starved to death; an entire generation is seeing their future destroyed.
“Starvation is used as a weapon of war,” the EU foreign policy chief,
JosepBorrell, said this week. “Israel is provoking famine.”
While the world’s attention is on Gaza, life for
Palestinians in the West Bank is also growing increasingly precarious. There
has been a surge in settler violence and a spike in unlawful lethal force from
Israeli forces. More than 400 Palestinians from East Jerusalem and the West
Bank have been killed by Israeli fire since 7 October, according to the
Palestinian health ministry. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has said
that about 100 of these deaths have been children, most of whom posed no
credible threat to heavily armed soldiers from one of the most powerful
militaries in the world.
One of those children was Rami Al-Halhouli, a
12-year-old who was recently shot dead by Israeli border police while lighting
fireworks to celebrate Ramadan. The police, who still have Rami’s body, have
said that the child was aiming the firework at them – but did not provide any
evidence of this. The far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir celebrated the
shooting, calling the 12-year-old a “terrorist” and the officer who shot him a
hero.
Perhaps you think it’s OK for an Israeli soldier to
shoot a boy dead because he was playing with a firework. Perhaps you can find a
way to justify this to yourself. Still, the uncomfortable fact remains that
there are plenty of documented cases that show Israeli soldiers firing at
Palestinians without any provocation. “Cases like these happen quite regularly,
but no one’s hearing about them,” said DrorSadot, a spokesperson for B’Tselem.
“The military will say that it is opening an investigation. And this
investigation will last for years, probably without any media covering it. And
then it will be washed down the drain.” Fewer than 1% of any investigations
into the Israeli military using excessive force against Palestinians end in an
indictment.

Guterres visits Gaza border
Mar 24, 2024
NEW DELHI: Israel's foreign minister criticised the

This came after Guterres called for a ceasefire during

Foreign Minister Israel Katz took to social media
platform X to express his discontent, stating that under Guterres's leadership,

law a $1.2 trillion spending package, keeping the US government funded through
a fiscal year that began six months ago.
Biden described the package, which Congress
overwhelmingly passed in the early hours of Saturday, as investing in Americans
as well as strengthening the economy and national security. The Democratic
president urged Congress to pass other bills stuck in the legislative chambers.
“The House must pass the bipartisan national security
supplemental to advance our national security interests,” Biden said in a
statement. “And Congress must pass the bipartisan border security agreement,
the toughest and fairest reforms in decades, to ensure we have the policies and
funding needed to secure the border. It’s time to get this done.”
The Democratic-majority Senate passed the spending
bill with a 74-24 vote. Key federal agencies including the departments of
Homeland Security, Justice, State and Treasury, which houses the Internal
Revenue Service, will remain funded through 30 September.

Lebanon's Displaced Celebrate Ramadan And Long For
Home
March 24, 2024
MARWANIEH, LEBANON — Shortly before sunset on a recent
evening, MervatReslan and a group of other women made french fries in vats of
boiling oil to serve with that night's iftar — the meal that breaks the daily
fasts Muslims observe during the holy month of Ramadan.
They belong to roughly 60 families who have been
sheltering at an abandoned hotel in the southern Lebanon town of Marwanieh to
escape the shelling and airstrikes that have made it too dangerous to stay in
their homes in the country's border region with Israel. Although they've become
a family of sorts to one another, many long to return home.
"Especially during Ramadan, you start thinking
that your house is better — that you and your family all used to gather
together, your children and their children, your in-laws and neighbors. And now
you're sitting by yourself in a room," said Reslan.
Those living at the Hotel Montana, which went out of
business in 2005, are among an estimated 90,000 people from southern Lebanon
who have been displaced by the near-daily clashes between the militant group
Hezbollah and Israeli forces. Another 60,000 Lebanese civilians have decided to
stay in the border zone and risk the danger, according to a United Nations
agency.

Nasir Iqbal
March 24, 2024
ISLAMABAD: Former attorney general for Pakistan (AGP)
Khalid Jawed Khan on Saturday explained that he wanted a proper inquiry into
the serious allegations levelled by Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, though he
was unaware of any previous government letter in this regard.
Mr Khan said he, as the then first law officer, and
not Anwar Mansoor, had furnished a letter dated June 10, 2021 before the
Supreme Court in connection with Justice Siddiqui’s case.
In a statement issued to Dawn, the former principal
law officer said he had allowed the letter to be filed before the SC on behalf

probe, mentioning that he was unaware of any previous government letter, dated
July 24, 2018.
On Friday, a five-judge SC bench ruled that Justice
Siddiqui would be deemed to have retired, and was entitled to receive all the

March 24, 2024
ISLAMABAD: An inquiry conducted by the Federal Board
of Revenue (FBR) has detected alleged money laundering and tax evasion to the
tune of billions of rupees by a trading company — Vicky Trading Pvt. Ltd —
purportedly linked to the Bahria Town, one of the country’s leading real estate
developers.
According to documents available with Dawn,
proceedings against the said trading company are underway at the special court
of customs, taxation, and anti-smuggling under the Anti-Money Laundering Act

accounts of Vicky Trading Pvt. Ltd amounting to Rs319 billion,” the report
alleged, adding that the money was transferred from 2014 to 2018.
The documents showed that inquiry into the Rs23bn

At Manila Golden Mosque, fasting in Ramadan means
feeding hundreds, too
PATERNO R. ESMAQUEL II
MAR 24, 2024
MANILA, Philippines – One by one, people trickled in
shortly before sunset.
They sat down, facing each other, in front of food
containers and water bottles lining the two sides of a long multicolored mat.
Their leader, holding a megaphone, reminded them to settle down and keep
themselves in order.
Then, the clock struck 6:07 pm. Slowly, they opened
the containers to take their first meal – and to placate their grumbling
stomachs – after abstaining from food and water for one whole day, from sunrise
to sunset.

Bangladesh's external debt tops $100 billion: Reports

Ahsan H Mansur, executive director of the Policy

As external debt continues to rise, the challenges of

Jaded with Ramadan bazaars, Muslims turn to free
‘bukapuasa’ at mosques as economy bites
By AnisZalani
24 Mar 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Working in Cyberjaya,
Selangor, it can sometimes take nearly two hours for Hidayat, 24, to arrive
home in Shah Alam. If he leaves at 5pm, he would only get home with just around
half an hour to spare before breaking his fast during Ramadan.
The software engineer said he lives alone, which would
make cooking a hassle, but neither does he favour the Ramadan bazaars which he
found to be overcrowded and can be overpriced. So he turned to the surau near
his neighbourhood — now his 10th day in a row doing so this year so far.
“When you break your fast at the surau, the food is
already prepared by the committee members,” he told Malay Mail when met at
Surau Al-Islah, located across a row of two-storey terrace houses in Seksyen 7,
Shah Alam.
Hidayat was among the growing number of urban Muslims
here who break their fast at mosques or suraus before performing their maghrib
prayers — a tradition that goes back for decades.
