Mosques, Shrines, Homes Bulldozed In Demolition Drive Near Somnath Temple in Gujarat

29-09-2024

The authorities in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district on Saturday demolished nine mosques and shrines, and 45 homes in the Prabhas Patan area near the Somnath temple for alleged land encroachment, the Hindustan Times reported.

The demolition drive started in the early hours of Saturday and continued for more than six hours, District Collector DD Jadeja told The Indian Express. “Encroachment from 15 hectares of land, which is worth Rs 60 crore, has been removed,” Jadeja said.

An allegedly illegal lodge with 40 rooms was also demolished during the drive, the Hindustan Times quoted DD Jadeja as saying.

Hundreds of police personnel were deployed in the Somnath and Veraval towns as a precautionary measure, Superintendent of Police ManoharsinhJadeja told The Indian Express.

The police used mild force to maintain law and order in one location during the demolition drive amid resistance from the residents, but there was no major incident, ManoharsinhJadeja said.

The district collector said that a part of the land where the structures were demolished belonged to the Shree Somnath Trust, which manages the Somnath temple. The encroachments were removed following several court rulings against the encroachment.

“The government had allotted some plots of land to Somnath Trust in the 1950s on a lease for 99 years,” The Indian Express quoted DD Jadeja as saying. “Over time, these plots were encroached. The matter had reached the Gujarat High Court in 1986, but the ruling had come in favour of the government.”

“But the court didn’t grant the encroachers any relief,” the district collector said. “Hence, the encroachments have been removed.”

Following the demolitions, the Minority Coordination Committee of Gujarat, which advocates the rights of religious minorities, wrote to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel seeking justice for the Muslim community, the Hindustan Times reported.

The committee alleged that several ancient shrines in PrabhasPatan, including the Haji Mangrol Dargah, Shah Silar Dargah, Garib Shah Dargah and Jafar Muzaffar Dargah, had been bulldozed.

In its letter, the group claimed that the presence of the Haji Mangrol Shah Dargah had been recorded in the Junagadh state’s revenue records dating back to 1924.

“Despite cases being pending in the High Court and Waqf Tribunal, the demolition was carried out, which is truly an unjust act,” the committee said.

The Minority Coordination Committee of Gujarat also pointed to the Supreme Court’s September 17 interim order staying demolitions across the country without its permission till October 1. The court had clarified that the directive did not apply to unauthorised constructions on public roads, footpaths, railway lines or public places.

The top court’s directives came on a batch of petitions challenging “bulldozer action” by various state governments, whereby properties belonging to persons accused of crimes have been punitively demolished.

The district collector said that the alleged encroachments were razed after following the due process of law, The Indian Express reported.

“Having failed to prove ownership of land on which the structures were standing, we had served notices to occupants around 20 days ago, asking them to demolish and remove debris within 15 days,” DD Jadeja was quoted as saying.

He added: “Then again, we told them to demolish these structures on their own or else the government would do that. As they didn’t comply, we undertook the demolition drive after following the due process.”

Panja asserted that the structures had a history of 700 years to 800 years and were protected as Waqf Board properties. “But the collector, and by extension, the government misinterpreted court judgements to demolish these structures,” The Indian Express quoted the Congress leader as saying.

The Congress leader said that a Veraval court had ruled that the Waqf tribunal should decide the civil suit regarding the land, with a hearing expected on October 11.

“The parties concerned moved the Gujarat High Court, seeking protection against any coercive action,” Panja added. “The High Court had fixed October 8 as the date of hearing. But before that hearing, the collector ordered demolition after giving a final warning on Friday.”

Europeans, Arab And Muslim Nations Launch Initiative For Palestinian State: Norway's FM Said

September 28, 2024

UNITED NATIONS — European, Arab and Islamic nations have launched an initiative to strengthen support for a Palestinian state and prepare for a future after the war in Gaza and escalating conflict in Lebanon, Norway's foreign minister said Friday.

Espen Barth Eide told The Associated Press that "there is a growing consensus in the international community from Western countries, from Arab countries, from the Global South, that we need to establish a Palestinian Authority, a Palestinian government, a Palestinian state — and the Palestinian state has to be recognized."

Eide said many issues need to be addressed, including the security interests of Israel and the Palestinians, recognition and normalization of relations after decades of conflict and the demobilization of Hamas as a military group.

"These are pieces of a bigger puzzle," Norway's chief diplomat said. "And you can't just come in there with one of these pieces, because it only works if all the pieces are laid in place."

But even if the puzzle is completed, it's unlikely to gain traction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Still, Eide believes that after decades of failed or stalled negotiations, "we need to take a new approach" to achieving an independent Palestinian state.

To accelerate work on these issues, Eide said almost 90 countries attended a meeting Thursday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly's current gathering of world leaders. He and Saudi Arabia's foreign minister co-chaired the session to launch "The Global Alliance for the Implementation of a Palestinian State and a Two-State Solution."

"We have to see how we can come out of this deadlock and try to use this deep crisis also as an opportunity to move forward," Eide told a U.N. Security Council meeting on Gaza later Friday.

Norway is the guarantor of the 1993 Oslo Accords, hailed as a breakthrough in the decades-long conflict between Arabs and Jews, which created the Palestinian Authority and set up self-rule areas in the Palestinian Authority. Eide said more than 30 years later, Israel's "occupation" is continuing, and there are no negotiations leading to a final settlement and an independent Palestinian state, which led to Norway's decision in May to recognize a Palestinian state.

Eide brought up the alliance again Saturday during his address to the annual meeting of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, stressing that "while cease-fires in Gaza and Lebanon are most urgently needed, ending hostilities must not be confused with lasting solutions."

He again called on the 44 U.N. member nations that haven't done so to recognize the state of Palestine and allow it to become a full member of the United Nations.

And he called on "everyone who can, to help to build Palestine's institutions, and on regional actors to help embed a political settlement in a broader regional framework."

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud told the U.N. Security Council on Friday that his country, the joint Islamic-Arab ministerial committee, Norway and the European Union launched the alliance "because we feel responsible to act to change the reality of the conflict without delay."

He told the assembly Saturday that the coalition aimed "to promote the two-state solution," calling on all countries to join the group and to recognize the Palestinians as an independent state.

EU foreign policy chief JosepBorrell urged all countries to take practical measures "to bring about the free Palestine next to a secure Israel."

The 2002 initiative, endorsed by the Arab League and the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, offered Israel normalized relations in exchange for a full withdrawal from territories captured in 1967.

September 28 Recognized As International Day For Access To Information By UNESCO

UNESCO

----

By Fidel Rahmati

September 28, 2024

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated September 28 as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) in 2015. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually to emphasize the importance of transparent access to information.

The International Day for Universal Access to Information reminds us of the crucial role open access to information plays in promoting transparent governance, achieving development goals, and fostering just societies.

The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) monitors and responds to media freedom violations. On Saturday, September 28, it issued a statement saying, “An informed society is the cornerstone of democracy. On this day, we celebrate the right to free and open access to knowledge for all.”

This celebration comes at a time when parts of the world are embroiled in bloody conflicts that, in turn, restrict access to information. Additionally, in many countries, governing powers hinder access to information, fueling misinformation often organized to achieve political objectives and mislead public opinion.

Rapid technological advancements, while beneficial, also bring new challenges, which are highlighted on the International Day for Universal Access to Information.

There is a widespread belief that in our increasingly digital and interconnected world, access to information should become progressively easier, and in many ways, it has.

However, technology and the flow of information also create divisions, distinguishing between those who have access and those who don’t.

According to a report by the ORF Foundation, countries with significant resources are advancing rapidly, while others struggle to keep up due to a lack of data.

In Afghanistan, restrictions on the media have severely hindered access to reliable information. Since the Taliban’s return to power, media outlets have faced increased censorship, leading to the spread of misinformation and creating an environment where the public’s access to credible information is highly limited.

These restrictions undermine efforts to maintain a well-informed society, which is critical for fostering transparency and democracy.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf To Block Constitutional Package Sans JUI-F Support

ISLAMABAD: As the PML-N-led coalition government remains hopeful of securing Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s support for its proposed constitutional amendment package, the PTI has vowed to block the move to pass the highly contentious bill in parliament, even if the JUI-F chief throws his support behind it.

The PTI claimed that all party parliamentarians were united in their stance, stating that not a single member would vote in favour of the constitutional package. “If Maulana Fazl joins the government, none of the PTI members will support it,” PTI’s newly appointed information secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said on a private TV show.

Sheikh Waqas accused the government of holding six PTI MNAs hostage during its unsuccessful attempt to pass the constitutional package in parliament on Sept 14, which coincided with the weekend holidays on Saturday and Sunday. “They have kept our six members hostage and pressured them to vote in favour of the proposed package,” he added.

Interestingly, none of the PTI members, who were reportedly held hostage, publicly complained about being confined at the Punjab House in the federal capital for two days, on Sept 14 and 15.

Israel asks U.S. to deter Iran after Hezbollah leader assassination

29-09-2024

Israel asked the U.S. to take steps to deter Iran from attacking Israel in response to the Israeli airstrike in Beirut that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and a top Iranian general, two Israeli and U.S. officials tell Axios.

Why it matters: The Israel-Hezbollah conflict was already spiraling into an all-out war that could pull in Iran, and that was before Israel killed Iran's most powerful ally in the region, Nasrallah, and an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps general.

Iran has been careful to avoid any attack on Israel that could pull it into such a war, but officials in Washington and Jerusalem are worried Friday's strike could push Tehran over the edge.

President Biden issued a statement on Saturday saying he directed the Secretary of Defense to "further enhance the defense posture of U.S. military forces in the Middle East region to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader regional war."

The latest: Biden had a call on Saturday with Vice President Harris and their national security team to receive an update on the situation in the Middle East, review the status of U.S. military force in the region, and direct ongoing diplomatic efforts to deescalate the conflict, the White House said.

Israel seeks to expand war beyond Gaza: Turkish foreign minister

Gizem Nisa Cebi

28.09.2024

Turkish Foreign Minister HakanFidan on Saturday said Israel's expanding military actions, particularly the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, suggests it has a desire to take the Gaza conflict to the region.

"There is a desire within Israel, including [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, to escalate the conflict across the region," Fidan said in an exclusive interview with Türkiye's public broadcaster TRT Haber in New York.

He emphasized that "if Israel is not stopped in Gaza and Palestine, it will spread its war to surrounding regions," noting that after reaching its military targets in Gaza, Israel is now moving to the front in Lebanon.

by: Pushkar Tiwari

Israel said it killed Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in a powerful airstrike in Beirut, prompting Iran to call for the United Nations Security Council to meet over Israeli military's actions in Lebanon and across the Middle East region.

"Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent rights under international law to take every measure in defense of its vital national and security interests," Iran's UN ambassador Amir SaeidIravani wrote in a letter to the 15-member UNSC body.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had "settled the score" for the killing of Israelis and citizens of other countries, including Americans.Netanyahu said that as long as Nasrallah was alive, he could have "quickly restored the capabilities we had eroded from Hezbollah" in a series of recent operations.US President Joe Biden -- whose government is Israel's top arms supplier -- said it was a "measure of justice".More than 1,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon in the past two weeks.Israel and Hezbollah began fighting across the Lebanese border after the war in Gaza erupted when Hamas, a Hezbollah ally also backed by Iran, attacked Israeli towns on October 7 last year.

UK lawmaker Rosie Duffield quits Labour in protest at PM Keir Starmer

29-09-2024

British lawmaker Rosie Duffield quit the ruling Labour Party on Saturday in protest at Prime Minister Keir Starmer's approach to child poverty and his acceptance of tens of thousands of pounds of free clothing and hospitality from political donors.

In her resignation letter, a copy of which she gave to The Sunday Times newspaper, Duffield accused Starmer of "sleaze, nepotism and apparent avarice", adding: "I am so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to tarnish and humiliate our once proud party."

Starmer, who was Britain's top prosecutor before entering parliament, said on 20 September he would stop accepting donations to pay for clothing for him and his wife.

Duffield said she would continue to represent the city of Canterbury in southeast England as an independent lawmaker. She has been a member of parliament since 2017 and voted against Starmer becoming leader in 2020.

‘Would be better’ if Tory MPs selected leader, says Lord Hague

29-09-2024

Former Conservative leader Lord Hague has said that it “would be better” if the party’s leadership was decided by MPs, rather than the membership.

Tory members are preparing to select a new leader after Rishi Sunak announced he was standing down following the party’s general election defeat in the summer.

Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, James Cleverly and Tom Tugendhat are all vying for the party leadership, and will get a chance to address the party’s membership at the conference in Birmingham which gets under way on Sunday.

Pakistan

Over 100 rounded up as police contain PTI protest

Mohammad Asghar

September 29, 2024

RAWALPINDI: As PTI supporters took to the streets to converge on Liaquat Bagh for their demonstration, Punjab police arrested over 110 supporters, including party leaders, after clashes while the smell of teargas used to disperse the protesters permeated the air.

The garrison town remained ‘under virtual siege’ on Saturday, with containers placed on every route leading to the protest site as well as Murree Road, which passes through the heart of the city.

On more than 25 ‘blocking points’, contingents of the anti-riot police armed with teargas grenades and rubber bullets were stationed to stop the PTI protesters. In total, more than 4,200 police officials were deployed to counter the demonstration. A senior police official said PTI leaders, including Seemabia Tahir, were also detained and cases against them were being registered.

In the afternoon, PTI officials started moving towards Liaquat Bagh in small groups. The party activists assembled in narrow streets along the road using the densely populated neighbourhoods as a cover but attempts to occupy Murree Road were repulsed by the police.

The workers then retaliated by pelting the police with stones, and the latter responded with teargas and baton-charge to push them back. The PTI workers as they retreated towards the streets hurled more rocks at the police amid intense teargas shelling.

Shehbaz lauds army chief for role in securing IMF deal

Atika Rehman

September 29, 2024

LONDON: Praising the role of the army chief and friendly countries, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said the government would expand Pakistan’s tax net and that the “elite must also make sacrifices”.

The prime minister made these remarks at a press conference held at the Churchill Hotel in London, where he had a stopover after attending the UN General Assembly session in New York.

He added that brotherly countries Saudi Arabia, the UAE and China played a significant role in securing the approval of the $7 billion IMF programme. “This deal would not have been possible without them. I would like to thank them for once again taking Pakistan out of a difficult situation.”

Months ago, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb had made a similar statement, saying that China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are crucial in helping Pakistan secure its IMF deal due to their potential to extend the maturity in debt owed to them.

Rawalpindi residents confined to their neighbourhoods as police take on PTI

Aamir Yasin

September 29, 2024

RAWALPINDI: As the Rawalpindi administration took steps to contain a PTI protest in the city, the residents living in the vicinity of Murree Road remained confined to their neighbourhoods, with some claiming that the teargas fired by the police had entered their houses, compounding their agonies.

The ‘virtual siege’ by the police and paramilitaries paralysed the routine activities and the security level was placed on ‘high alert’ in light of the demonstration.

The garrison city presented a deserted look with containers placed on almost all routes leading to the protest site at Liaquat Bagh. The worst affected area was Peshawar Road where the administration placed containers at the Chairing Cross, Qasim Market, and Military Hospital squares. Other areas, such as the T-Chowk, Iqbal Road, 26 Number Chungi, Faizabad, Soan Bridge, Kalma Chowk, Tench Bhatta, 4th, 5th, and 6th roads, Double Road, and connecting roads and streets were also closed to traffic.

IHC restrains executive magistrates from using judicial powers

Malik Asad

September 29, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has restrained executive magistrates from exercising judicial powers, as only courts can exercise judicial powers in the capital territory under the Constitution.

IHC Justice Arbab Mohammad Tahir issued the judgement in response to a petition, which said the magistrates were using judicial powers against the spirit and mandate of the Constitution, particularly, Article 175 (3).

The petition highlighted that officers of the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration, while exercising judicial powers, did not follow the rules of procedure framed by the high court under Article 202 of the Constitution and that they were outside the supervisory jurisdiction of the high court, contrary to Article 203 of the Constitution.

The assistant attorney general, however, argued that the judicial system of Pakistan was choked with hundreds and thousands of cases and it did not appeal to a prudent mind to burden it further.

The state counsel argued that executive magistracy had been acknowledged and recognised by the Supreme Court, adding that the executive magistracy did not encroach upon the judicial sphere.

Bangladesh fan Tiger Robi deported to Dhaka after Kanpur chaos over false assault allegation

Sep 29, 2024

Tiger Robi was sent back home after controversy ensued on Day 1 of the Kanpur Test, when he alleged assault from fans.

Bangladesh cricket fan ‘Tiger Robi’ was deported back to his home country after a series of events during his visit to India sparked controversy. Robi, who had initially claimed he was assaulted during the India-Bangladesh Test match in Kanpur, later retracted his statement during Day 1 of the game. The authorities have clarified that his return to Bangladesh was not linked to the incident but rather a result of his health condition and his medical visa status.

Robi, a passionate supporter of the Bangladesh cricket team, is known for his fervent presence at international matches. He arrived in India on September 18 on a medical visa for treatment at a hospital in Howrah, West Bengal, according to PTI. Despite this, he travelled to Chennai and Kanpur to support his national team during their ongoing Test series.

His decision to attend the matches rather than focus on his treatment raised questions, particularly given the conditions of his visa.

Bel Air Mansion Belonging To Osama Bin Laden's Half-Brother Covered With Graffiti

By Jeff Nguyen

September 28, 2024

A mansion that partially belongs to the half-brother of Osama bin Laden has become the third multi-million dollar home to get hit by an onslaught of graffiti in recent weeks.

The property, which sits in Lower Bel Air, is nearly covered in spray paint at every square inch, which could be seen when SkyCal flew overhead on Saturday evening. However, the tagging happened several days earlier, becoming yet another vacant luxury home to get hit by vandals.

The first two homes, each located in the Hollywood Hills, are said to belong to movie producer John Powers Middleton, the son of Philadelphia Phillies owner John S. Middleton.

YouTuber and urban explorer Davy Mercado, who goes by @clickclackbrainsplat online, explored the property before talking with KCAL News on Saturday, showing the graffiti covering the walls and ground both inside and out of the home.

'Loser': VP Kamala Harris' campaign runs TV ad mocking Trump for avoiding second debate

Sep 29, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris has come out with a new TV ad doubling down on her call for the former president to engage in another debate with her. The 30-second advertisement criticises Trump’s reluctance to face Harris again after their first debate in September. As per the Independent, the ad ran as Donald Trump attended a college football game between Alabama and Georgia.

The ad released by Kamala Harris' campaign, filled with taunts, opened with the statement: “Winners never back down from a challenge. Champions know it’s anytime, anyplace. But losers, they whine and waffle and take their ball home.”

It then cut to a clip of Trump missing a putt on the golf course, followed by footage of Harris addressing the audience on stage. In a direct challenge to Trump, she said, “Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage. If you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.”

In response to Harris’ latest move, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated: “Kamala Harris would never show up to a sporting event like this [Alabama-Georgia] because she’d get booed out of the stadium and embarrass herself.”

US, Asia-Pacific nations hold joint maritime exercises in South China Sea

Sep 29, 2024

MANILA: The armed forces of five countries conducted joint maritime exercises in a portion of the South China Sea on Saturday as China carried out its own military drills in the disputed waterway.

The exercises involving the Philippines, United States, Australia, Japan and - for the first time - New Zealand took place in Manila's exclusive economic zone and sought to improve the militaries' interoperability, the Philippine armed forces said in a statement. Saturday's exercises included a Philippine warship, the United States' USS Howard, Japan's JS Sazanami, and New Zealand's HMNZS Aotearoa, it added.

Australia's Department of Defence said the drills demonstrated "our collective commitment to strengthen regional and international cooperation in support of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific".

The exercises follow a series of air and sea encounters between the Philippines and China, which have sparred over disputed areas of the South China Sea, including the Scarborough Shoal, one of Asia's most contested features. The shoal has been occupied by China's coast guard for more than a decade.

China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own, says it alone exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over the strait. Both the U.S. and Taiwan say the strait - a major trade route through which about half of global container ships pass - is an international waterway.

Sep 29, 2024

Former US President Donald Trump attacked Vice President Kamala Harris during his speech in Wisconsin on Saturday, targeting her immigration issues and her role in border policy, reported CBS News.

Speaking in Prairie du Chien, Trump accused Harris of allowing illegal border crossings and blamed her for crimes committed by migrants, claiming she had effectively “erased” the US border.

Trump also promised to "liberate Wisconsin from the mass migrant invasion" and extend that to the entire country if re-elected. He also escalated personal attacks on Harris, calling her “mentally impaired” and a “disaster,” stating, "Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way."

"Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Anybody would know this.", he said.

Attacks by Islamic extremists are rampant in Africa's Sahel

September 29, 2024

DAKAR, Senegal — Extremist attacks in Sahel, an arid swath of land south of the Sahara in Africa, have proliferated in recent months: Last week, Islamic militants attacked Bamako, the capital of Mali, for the first time in almost a decade, demonstrating their capacity to carry out large scale assaults. And last month, at least 100 villagers and soldiers were killed in central Burkina Faso during a weekend attack on a village by al-Qaida-linked jihadis, as they were forcibly helping security forces dig trenches to protect security outposts and villages.

Over the last decade, the region has been shaken by extremist uprisings and military coups. Three Sahelian nations, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, are now ruled by military leaders who have taken power by force, on the pledge of providing more security to citizens.

But the security situation in Sahel has worsened since the juntas took power, analysts say, with a record number of attacks and a record number of civilians killed both by Islamic fighters and government forces. Over the first six months of this year, 3,064 civilians were killed by the violence, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, a 25% increase compared to the previous 6 months.

The main two groups operating in the region are the al-Qaida-linked militant group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), and the Islamic State in the Sahel. Over the last year, the JNIM has strengthened its presence in Mali and Burkina Faso, by becoming a more coherent political grouping.

"The local populations support (JNIM) more than IS-affiliated groups," said analyst Shaantanu Shankar of the Economist Intelligence Unit. "They have integrated local rebel groups, which have close community ties."

Unlike JNIM, Islamic State in the Sahel is a loose coalition of anti-government forces that is much less entrenched politically, he said. They are much more dominant in the Lake Chad region.

These groups attack, terrorize and kill local populations and their actions likely amount to war crimes, according to rights organizations.

BarisanNasional’sWin Proves Voters Have Little Appetite For Identity Politics Based On Race And Religion

29 Sep 2024

KLUANG, Sept 29 — BarisanNasional’s (BN) decisive victory in the Mahkota state by-election yesterday sends a clear message: narrow politics, rhetoric and emotional appeals hold little sway among Johoreans.

Senior Political Science lecturer at UniversitiTeknologi MARA (UiTM) Mujibu Abd Muis, said BN’s majority of 20,648 votes indicates weak support for PerikatanNasional (PN) in Johor, primarily due to its outdated campaign strategies.

“Johor is an open and progressive state where such politics are not well-received, unlike the more conservative and traditional Malay Belt states. PN’s campaign approach was predictable and failed to resonate with voters.

“Campaigns should align with local demographics, as voter psychology varies. In Johor, fresh ideas are essential. To win over mixed constituencies, the focus must shift to broader issues rather than identity-based politics,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Mujibu also highlighted BN’s decision to field Kluang UMNO Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, a young and fresh candidate, as a sign of UMNO’s internal reforms under President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following the 15th general election. These reforms are now yielding positive results.

Although introducing a new face in the by-election might seem unpopular and risky in the short term, it is gradually helping to eliminate the party’s ‘warlord’ culture, which bodes well for UMNO’s long-term future.

“If this trend continues, and UMNO becomes bolder in fielding more young and capable candidates, including women, the party will regain support and grow stronger as the next general election approaches,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prof Dr AwangAzmanAwangPawi, a sociopolitical analyst at Universiti Malaya’s Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCEDEL), shared similar sentiments, noting that BN’s significant victory reflects voter rejection of PN’s heavy reliance on religious and ethnic rhetoric in its political messaging.

In a statement today, GPM chief executive officer, Syahrir Azfar Saleh, announced that the aid will consist of essential supplies for temporary shelters, including tents, mattresses, pillows and blankets, as well as hot meals and necessities for infants and children.

“Concerned Malaysians who wish to help can contribute to the Global Peace Mission account (Maybank: 5642 2161 1602) with the reference ‘Lebanon’ or by clicking the following link: https://jomsedekah.com/donations/pedulilubnan/,” he said.

He also called on global leaders to unite and take swift action to stop the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, particularly as the war in Palestine, especially in Gaza, nears its one-year mark.
