The multi-party delegation led by BJP leader Baijayant Panda, which undertook a tour of several countries to rally global support for India’s war against terror emanating from Pakistan, called on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Tuesday following its return to the national capital.
The Panda delegation – comprising BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma, Satnam Singh Sandhu and ex-diplomat Harsh Shringla – visited four key Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria.
Sources said the delegation briefed Jaishankar about the visits, with its members giving him their first-hand accounts and assessments. The EAM lauded their efforts.
“We briefed the EAM about our personal experiences, underlining that India’s growing economic might and position in the global order, secured by PM Narendra Modi’s diplomatic push during his tenure and visits to several nations are key when it comes to the world’s decision to stand with us as partners both in international trade as well as on the issue of zero tolerance against terrorism,” a member said.
When we briefed foreign governments, we spoke about international agencies, such as the UN itself, having drawn attention to Pakistan’s age-old links with terrorists and terror networks. This was followed by briefings about the precise targeting of terror infrastructure by Indian defence forces on Pakistani soil. Every country we visited had already issued statements condemning the Pahalgam terror incident – these were reiterated by them in person to us,” the delegate added.
The Modi government constituted seven multi-party teams comprising leaders, MPs and ex-diplomats, tasking them with the mission to visit a slew of countries to convey India’s message in the wake of the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.
The Panda delegation was the first one to return Tuesday morning.
The team led by DMK MP Kanimozhi, which travelled to Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia and Russia, arrived in the afternoon, while the delegation led by JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha, that visited Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan and Singapore, is scheduled to return on Tuesday night. Other teams are expected to return over the next few days.
Sources said all delegations would meet Jaishankar following their return to give him their feedbacks. The leader of each team would compile a report for submission to the EAM with inputs from all their members.
Panda said it was a “very successful” visit as all the countries visited by his delegation have taken a clear stand against terrorism. “It was a very successful visit; the four countries we travelled to… have taken steps to combat terrorism and their stand is also clear. They understand India. India’s history is such that we do not need to provide justification; we are a nation that, for thousands of years, have sheltered the persecuted from across the world – the country of ahimsa,” he said.
“We had gone to provide facts and figures about the Pahalgam terror attack and the (Indo-Pak) war that followed afterward in which India set a ‘new normal’ to the effect that terror-related violence will be retaliated to and that too precisely and in a measured way,” Panda said.
He said his team also detailed measures against Islamabad, such as economic sanctions, restrictions on trade and visas, and suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with the objective that Pakistan change its “wrong policies” and stop its “open support to terrorism”.
“Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ji, over the last 11 years, has developed very good relationships with the leaderships of these nations and has been bestowed with their respective and highest civilian honours. Given India’s burgeoning economic growth, all these nations view India as an opportunity and want to stand with us not only against terrorism, but on other fronts as well,” he said.
After her delegation’s return, Kanimozhi told the media that during their interactions abroad, they underlined how the roots of any terrorist attack, not only in India but also in other parts of the world, have been traced back to Pakistan.
“In many such cases when there have been terrorist attacks they have been (found) to be trained and sponsored in Pakistan…this is something we wanted to make people understand,” she said adding that the composition of the delegations comprising leaders from both the ruling BJP-led NDA and the Opposition was itself “a very strong message to the world”.
“People were surprised that the delegation was led by an Opposition party MP. So they also understood the very strong message that India stood as one and wanted to end terrorism not just in India but across the world,” Kanimozhi also said, adding that the response they got was “very positive”.

France Spends Heavily On Framing Islam and Migration as Security Threats: Expert at International Scientific Conference
03 June 2025
Paris is investing significant resources to present Islam and migration as major security threats to French society, according to Professor Chakib Benhafri, a researcher at the University of Algiers 2.
Speaking at the international scientific conference “Imperial Structure: Colonial Ideologies and Realities” in Baku on June 3, Professor Benhafri highlighted how French media consistently frame Algeria’s history through the lens of conflict and war, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“I have never seen any other headline in the French media. There is no room for positive elements. Today, they portray the narrative as if Africa cannot change or develop without France’s involvement,” he said.
The professor also criticised France’s long-standing investment in propaganda to support its policies. “As members of the fourth or fifth generation of former colonies, born and raised in France, we clearly see the country’s agenda. France has always allocated enormous funds to promote its so-called ‘civilising mission,’” Benhafri added.
In May 2025, a government-commissioned report warned that the Muslim Brotherhood posed a covert threat to French society—a claim widely challenged by academics who labelled the report as alarmist and politically motivated. Critics argued that such narratives are used to justify increased surveillance, restrictive laws, and to mobilise support from conservative voters.
Observers also point out that the French media often reinforce these portrayals, with disproportionate coverage of alleged threats linked to Islam or migration, while positive contributions by these communities are overlooked. This media environment has deep roots in France's colonial history, particularly in Algeria, where the so-called mission civilisatrice ("civilising mission") was used to justify violent occupation and assimilation.

Shia Community Voices Support for Islamic Emirate in Ghazni
2025-06-03
GHAZNI (BNA): In a gathering at the Islamic Cultural Center in Ghazni city, the High Commission of Shia Scholars, comprising Shia scholars, tribal elders, and former political and military figures, expressed their support for the Islamic Emirate.
During the meeting, the commission’s head, Mohammad Ali Akhlaqi, emphasized the importance of fostering a strong relationship between the government and the populace. He praised the four-year achievements of the Islamic Emirate, highlighting the need for international recognition and the release of Afghanistan’s frozen assets.
Former security official General Ghulam Ali Wahdat also spoke at the event, noting that thousands of former soldiers have benefited from a general amnesty, allowing them to live in a secure environment. He dismissed foreign propaganda as disconnected from the realities on the ground.
The speakers at the meeting underscored that building trust between the government and the citizens is vital for reinforcing national authority in Afghanistan.

Boulder attack renews safety concerns for US Jewish communities
June 4, 2025
Kayla Epstein
SWAT officers on the scene after an attack in Boulder, Colorado that targeted a group calling for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
-------------
On Sunday, a group gathered in Boulder, Colorado, to raise awareness for hostages held in Gaza was attacked, leaving 12 people injured.
The suspect, Mohammed Sabry Soliman, accused of throwing incendiary devices at them, allegedly planned the attack for a year, and told police he wanted to "kill all Zionist people," according to court documents.
It was the latest in a string of attacks against Jewish people and institutions, ratcheting up anxiety among those in North America's Jewish community who see these incidents as signs of growing antisemitism in the US.
The Boulder attack occurred just weeks after a suspect shot and killed a couple outside the Capitol Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. They were later identified as employees of the Israeli embassy who had been attending an event at the museum. In April, the official residence of Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro was set on fire, just hours after the Jewish lawmaker celebrated the first night of Passover.
"Jews are feeling the impact and are more afraid than they were two weeks ago, or that fears that existed in some communities a few weeks ago are more heightened," said Adina Vogel Ayalon of J Street, a pro-Israel advocacy group that's critical of the war and has called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
"These types of hate crimes are not distinguishing between where you fall on the political spectrum about the war" between Israel and Hamas, Ms Ayalon said. "And that is something very unsettling."
Israel has faced sustained international criticism over its military actions in Gaza, which it undertook after Hamas attacked the country on 7 October 2023, killing about 1,200 people - mostly civilians - and taking 251 hostages.
Over 50,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. The statistics do not distinguish between civilians and Hamas fighters, and the BBC and other international media organisations are blocked by Israel from entering Gaza to verify.
But a United Nations report that assessed Gazan deaths during a six-month period found nearly 70% of verified victims were women and children. Throughout the conflict, human rights experts have raised the alarm of widespread hunger, disease, and displacement within Gaza.
The war also has become a divisive political issue in the US. Pro-Palestinian protests across university campuses and in major cities have ignited greater debates over education and free speech. There are religious, generational, and partisan divides within the American Jewish community about support for Israel and the question of Palestinian statehood.
But the attacks in Boulder and Washington DC, struck a broader nerve because they crossed a "clear red line between legitimate free speech and political violence," Ms Ayalon said.
Boulder's attack has drawn condemnation outside the Jewish community.
"Acts of antisemitism have no place in our society," the Muslim Public Affairs Council condemned the Boulder attack in a statement. "This violent assault is not only an attack on a specific community but a direct threat to the values of pluralism, dignity, and safety for all people of faith. As Muslims, our faith calls us to speak out against injustice and to uphold the sanctity of every human life."
The group targeted in Boulder, Run For Their Lives, holds weekly meetings and marches across the country to call for the release of the remaining hostages taken to Gaza.
"The premise of the group is to peacefully raise awareness of the hostages. We're apolitical, we're not protesting anything," said global coordinator Shira Weiss.
Many of the group's members are Jewish and support Israel, but those are not requirements for participation.
"We get people from all walks of life - who vote Republican, Independent, Democrat, who support the Israeli government, or don't support the Israeli government," Ms Weiss said.
Safety has always been a top priority for group chapters, she said, but they "never thought such a violent attack would happen."
Jewish communities and institutions across the US have long required security, but many bolstered their defences after a shooter espousing right-wing antisemitic conspiracy theories murdered 11 worshippers at a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania synagogue in 2018. The following April, another shooter attacked a synagogue in Poway, California, killing one person and injuring three others.
Those conversations are again happening in the wake of the Boulder incident.
"The attacks, especially given the succession of attacks in a short period of time have made every Jewish American question their security, whether it's their personal security or the security of Jewish institutions that they visit," said Haliey Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America.
"There's a sense that what has occurred in DC and Boulder could have happened anywhere, could have happened to anyone."
The Jewish Colorado organisation announced a fundraiser to support increased security for Boulder's Jewish community, as well as financial and trauma support for victims of the attack. Its goal is $160,000.
Rabbi Dan Moskovitz of Temple Sholom in Vancouver, Canada frequently joins Run For Their Lives events and plans to continue advocating for the hostages in Gaza.
But he worries the Boulder attack would not be an isolated incident.
"It's only going to inflame more radicalisation," he said. "It's only going to inspire more people to do those things."

Islamic Bodies in Al-Quds denounce escalating violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque
03 Jun 2025
Islamic institutions in Al-Quds have condemned the escalating and unprecedented violations by Jewish extremist groups against Al-Aqsa Mosque.
This came in a joint statement issued on Tuesday by the Council of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in Al-Quds, the Supreme Islamic Authority, the Palestinian Fatwa Council, the Office of the Chief Justice in Al-Quds, and the Department of Islamic Endowments and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs.
The Islamic bodies also denounced the extremist Jews' desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque by performing public prayers, rituals, prostrations, singing, and dancing within its courtyards—actions that have become a daily occurrence. They described these acts as a clear violation of red lines and a deliberate disregard for the beliefs of over 2 billion Muslims worldwide.
The Quds-based Islamic institutions held the Israeli occupation authorities responsible for the serious violations against one of Islam’s holiest sites, Al-Aqsa Mosque, by enabling large groups of Jewish extremists to storm the mosque daily under military protection to perform their public rituals.
They emphasized that these acts constitute a blatant violation of the religious, historical, and legal status of Al-Aqsa Mosque, which has remained an exclusive place of worship for Muslims for five centuries, spanning an area of 144 dunams.
The Islamic bodies reaffirmed that Al-Aqsa Mosque is a divinely ordained place of worship for Muslims alone, as it was the destination of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Night Journey from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca before his ascension to the heavens.
They stressed that Al-Aqsa will remain an Islamic mosque until the Day of Judgment, stating that it cannot be divided or shared.
The Islamic institutions in Al-Quds called on Arab and Islamic nations to take a firm stance against the arrogance and blatant aggression of the occupation authorities toward Al-Aqsa Mosque. They also urged the Islamic world and the international community to act swiftly to halt these serious violations before Jewish extremist groups proceed with their declared plans to Judaize, demolish, or occupy Al-Aqsa Mosque—God forbid.

Muslim Personal Law Board will not make Waqf Act an election issue but will take a call to intensify protests
June 03, 2025
Syed MohammedSYED MOHAMMED
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has been organising demonstrations to protest against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 in several parts of the country, including in Hyderabad, for several weeks. The Board has sought to include women, and people belonging to other faiths in the protests, even as its president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, in an exclusive interview with The Hindu, asserts that their struggle is not against Hindus, but against the government which is trying to wrest lands and properties from the control of Muslims. Edited excerpts from an interview:
Q: What are your key contentions against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025?
It is our belief that the law was brought to grab the properties of Muslims. The law makes waqf properties vulnerable. The concept of waqf by user —meaning properties that have been historically used as mosques, dargahs, graveyards or madrasas — that are being used for a specific purpose, even if no documents are available, they will be considered waqf. Religious structures often predate documentation. For example, Delhi’s Jama Masjid and Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid were built centuries ago. If masjid committees are now expected to produce ownership documents, it sets an impossible standard. As regards claims by the government, we believe they have a habit of lying. They can claim any land parcel. Most waqf cases are against the government. So, all waqf cases that are against the government will become disputed. Similarly, disputes were created over other Muslim places of worship, and to create them one does not need evidence.
Second, the amendment says that any waqf property under the custody of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will no longer be considered waqf. Many historic mosques that serve both religious and public, as sites of tourism, interests may now function only at the government’s discretion, depending on whether and at what frequency they permit namaz (prayers). Thirdly, the law seeks to dilute protection under the law of limitation. Thousands of acres will stand risk of exclusion from waqf (due to adverse possession). Many land parcels are in unauthorised possession of the government, of Hindus and even Muslims.
Given the BJP’s usual firmness in passing laws, how do you plan to engage the public? Demonstrations such as ‘lights off’ and ‘human chain’ were largely symbolic. Will future protests take a different form?
It’s true that the BJP rarely backtracks. It believes in dictatorship. It does not listen to the public. As seen with the farm laws, these were withdrawn after several farmers died. The AIMPLB’s protests will be within the bounds of law. They will be peaceful. Our fight is not against our Hindu brothers but against this government. If the government remains indifferent, our working committee will decide the next course. Whether it is courting arrest, a jail bharo movement, or peaceful roadblocks. We’re encouraged by the support of many Hindu brothers, and civil rights groups who stand with us.
Q: The BJP claims this law will ensure transparency and empower Muslim women. How do you respond to these claims?
We say that let there be a public debate. Let the Prime Minister or Home Minister attend. We’ll welcome them. If that’s not possible, send the Law or Minority Affairs Minister to sit with an AIMPLB delegation. Let them explain how this law benefits Muslims, women, or Pasmandas. They won’t be able to. They claim Pasmandas are being denied rights. Are they not praying in masjids, which are waqf? In Islam, all Muslims are equal.
Q: But caste-based discrimination among Muslims, as is the case with Pasmandas, has been studied and documented. Those who are victims of discrimination know what they’ve been through.
Yes, there are two aspects — economic and social. Economically, Muslims are among the most backward, as various government-appointed commissions have found. Socially, some refer to Ashraf, Ajlaf, and Arzal. But these words are not found in any Islamic texts on jurisprudence. In Islam, a Syed girl can marry a non-Syed man, and no aalim will declare the nikah invalid. If the imam of a masjid is an Ansari, whom some may look down upon, but we do not, a Syed will still pray behind him. It is possible that these negative practices have entered the Muslim community on account of shared experiences, or influences from others. But Islam rejects caste. We look at it as a social evil.
Q: The government has contended in courts of law, including in the case of waqf, that of ‘essential religious’ practice.
The government is presenting this in a wrong manner. Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) should not be interpreted by the government. The opinion of those who are experts of fiqh should be taken. Essential religious practice encompasses all that is proved by Quran and hadith (tradition of Prophet Muhammad).
What ramification will Act have, especially when it comes to States that are soon going for elections as is the case with Bihar?
AIMPLB does not have anything to do with politics. We neither support, or oppose any party. We will not make this an election issue.. As regards one party supporting (the then Bill), or another opposing it, it is unfortunate many political leaders do not have a conscience.
The AIMPLB has stressed on unity among faiths as regards demonstrations, and called upon varied groups to fight against the Act.
If you see, a Jain temple was demolished recently in Mumbai. Secondly Buddhists in Bodh Gaya have been demonstrating. They want members of their own faiths in the management. The problem will exacerbate. It began with minorities, including Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs. In fact, I am certain that it will eventually affect Hindus as well.

Sowing Divisions in The Name of Pakistan: Maharashtra Minority Commission Chief Slams Nitesh Rane’s Comment On Eid
Ankita Deshkar
June 3, 2025
Pyare Khan, chairman of the Maharashtra State Minority Commission, has criticised the recent statements made by Minister Nitesh Rane, accusing him of sowing divisions and targeting Indian Muslims in the name of Pakistan. Rane had questioned the sacrifice of animals during Eid Al Adha, called for a celebration of a ‘virtual Eid’ and said India does not operate under Shariah law.
“Nitesh Rane keeps making the same hurtful comments again and again,” Khan said. “He taunts Indian Muslims by dragging in Pakistan, why? The truth is, those who chose to go to Pakistan did not believe in India. But those who stayed here, they are the honest ones. They believe in this country, and people admire them for that. Maybe that’s what is bothering Nitesh Rane the most,” Khan said. He was talking to the media in Nagpur on Tuesday.
Khan expressed concern that Rane’s statements are not just harmful to society, but also risk dragging down his own party. “By speaking like this, Nitesh Rane is damaging the image of the BJP. These are personal statements, but they reflect on everyone,” he said.
He also issued a firm warning. “If communal tensions rise because of such comments, the Minority Commission will act. We have the power under Section 10 to issue a notice. If a riot happens, and it is because of his words, we won’t hesitate to hold him responsible.”
When contacted, Nitesh Rane said, “I was expecting a responsible person like him from the Muslim community to come out and support the stand of celebrating eco-friendly Bakrid. That will solve a lot of problems and stop this Hindu-Muslim divide for good.”

Opposition to unanimously press for special Parliament session on Pahalgam terror attack
04.06.25
Opposition parties have decided to unanimously press for a special session of Parliament on the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and their implications on national security and foreign policy in the hope of a favourable response from the government, which has turned a deaf ear to such requests.
Leaders of 16 parties have signed a joint letter to the Prime Minister. While the letter was sent on Monday, some of the party leaders met in New Delhi on Tuesday to mobilise opinion on the need for the government to take Parliament into confidence when it had carried out an extensive diplomatic outreach that saw seven all-party teams visit 33 countries over the past fortnight.
While the letter mentions this collective effort to be an INDIA bloc initiative, some party leaders differed on this technicality, pointing out that no meeting was convened by Congress president and the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, who is the chairperson of the grouping that many constituents see as largely defunct.
Stating that “there are serious questions facing the nation about the terror attack, killing of civilians in Poonch, Uri and Rajouri, the ceasefire announcements and the implications on our national security and foreign policy”, the letter points out that all Opposition parties have supported the government’s efforts to engage with the international community on India’s position.
“The government has briefed foreign nations and the media, but not Parliament — keeping the people of India and their elected representatives in the dark. Therefore, we urge you to convene a special session of Parliament immediately upon the return of the all-party delegations,” the letter says. It has been signed by the leader of the Opposition in both Houses, Rahul Gandhi and Kharge, besides seniors of 15 other parties.
Explaining the rationale behind the collective push, AICC general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said: “On May 10 itself, the LoP Lok Sabha and LoP Rajya Sabha had written to the Prime Minister asking for a special session of Parliament. Such a session has become all the more necessary and urgent following the revelations of the CDS in Singapore the day before yesterday.
“It would have been more appropriate and in keeping with the finest of our democratic traditions if the information revealed in Singapore had first been shared in an all-party meeting or a Parliament session or a briefing in New Delhi.”
Briefing the media after the meeting, Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien said: “The government is responsible to the Parliament, Parliament is responsible to the people. That’s why we are demanding a special session of Parliament.” Other signatories to the letter include the DMK, SP, Shiv Sena (UBT), RJD, National Conference, CPI, CPM, IUML, RSP, JMM, VCK, MDMK and the CPM-ML.

Randhawa urges PM to declare Amritsar a ‘no-war zone’ after Indo-Pak missile clashes
04.06.25
Punjab Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to take steps toward declaring Amritsar district, which is home to the Golden Temple, a 'no-war zone'.
The letter was sent weeks after the latest India-Pakistan armed conflict.
On May 7, India carried out pre-dawn missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
Following the Indian action, Pakistan launched an offensive against Indian military bases and resorted to shelling the border areas for the next three days.
In the letter, Randhawa wrote that the city is the spiritual heartbeat of the Sikh faith. "Its sacred aura transcends religious boundaries, offering comfort, unity, and compassion in a world increasingly torn apart by conflict and division.
"I wish to clarify that this appeal is not a request for political sovereignty akin to the Vatican City, but rather a plea for international spiritual recognition and enduring security protections.
"In an era marked by rising global tension and militarisation, it is imperative that Sri Amritsar is shielded from the threats of war and violence - now and forever," Randhawa, a former deputy chief minister of Punjab, said.
"As many global powers lean increasingly toward conflict, the Sikh ethos of 'Sarbat da Bhala' (the welfare of all) must be elevated and preserved as one of humanity's last hopes for coexistence and peace," he said.
He said that recent geopolitical tensions, particularly during the Indo-Pak standoff, have revived legitimate concerns regarding Amritsar's potential vulnerability in the event of military conflict.
"These concerns, voiced by the Sikh community and civil society alike, necessitate a broader vision - one that goes beyond regional anxieties and calls for an international framework to guarantee the safety and sanctity of this revered city under all circumstances," said the Gurdaspur MP.
"For the Sikh faith, Sri Amritsar holds the same spiritual gravity as Mecca does for Muslims and the Vatican for Christians," he pointed out.
"It is, therefore, my humble submission that the global spiritual significance of Sri Amritsar be officially recognised, and that appropriate international security mechanisms-akin to those safeguarding the Vatican-be considered and adopted," he said.
He urged that the government of India should initiate necessary diplomatic and legislative steps toward declaring Amritsar a 'no-war zone' and work with international bodies to establish enduring protection of the city.

‘India doesn’t rely on upstream Brahmaputra’: After Bangladesh, Himanta hits out at Pakistan
03.06.25
A week after issuing a sharp warning to Bangladesh over remarks on the Siliguri Corridor, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken aim at Pakistan, calling out what he terms a “manufactured scare narrative” over the Brahmaputra river.
Responding to speculation circulating in Pakistani circles about China potentially “weaponising” the Brahmaputra’s flow into India, Sarma dismissed the concerns as baseless, backing his rebuttal with a flood of data and strategic reasoning.
“Let’s dismantle this myth — not with fear, but with facts and national clarity,” Sarma wrote in a social media post titled “What If China Stops Brahmaputra Water to India? A Response to Pakistan’s New Scare Narrative.”
According to the Assam CM, China contributes only about 30–35% of the Brahmaputra’s total water volume, primarily from glacial melt and sparse Tibetan rainfall, while over 65% is generated within Indian territory, thanks to heavy monsoons in the Northeast and major tributaries such as the Subansiri, Lohit and Manas.
“The Brahmaputra is not a river India depends on upstream — it is a rain-fed Indian river system, strengthened after entering Indian territory,” he said.
Further, he added that the river’s flow surges from 2,000–3,000 m³/s at the Indo-China border to over 15,000 m³/s in Assam during the monsoon.
Sarma went further, suggesting that even if China were to reduce the flow — “which is unlikely” — it might actually benefit Assam by mitigating the state’s annual floods, which displace lakhs of people each year.
The post comes in the wake of Pakistan’s concerns over India moving away from the Indus Waters Treaty.
Sarma accused Islamabad of exploiting the 74-year-old agreement and now reacting with panic as India asserts its sovereign rights over its rivers.
But this isn’t Sarma’s first geopolitical strike in recent days.
The Assam CM recently lashed out at Bangladesh following controversial remarks made by interim Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus during a visit to China.
Yunus had claimed that Bangladesh was the “guardian of the ocean” for India’s northeastern states, a statement Sarma interpreted as a veiled threat regarding the Siliguri Corridor.
In response, Sarma pointed out Bangladesh’s own geographical vulnerabilities, including two ‘chicken neck’ corridors linking key parts of the country, and warned that any rhetoric undermining India's territorial integrity would be met with facts and firmness.
He also cited the sensitive Chittagong corridor that connects Bangladesh’s economic and political capitals, reminding Dhaka that regional geography is a shared reality, not a tool for strategic posturing.
The war of words comes at a time when tensions in the Northeast remain high following ‘Operation Sindoor’, the military-led crackdown on cross-border terror modules in the region.
The operation aimed to root out insurgent groups operating along the Indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Myanmar borders.
Intelligence reports had suggested renewed interest from hostile powers in reviving old airstrips and supply chains, including the World War II-era Lalmonirhat airbase in Bangladesh, raising concerns over the security of the Siliguri Corridor and other sensitive areas.

BJP MP Alok Sharma accuses Bhopal’s Muslim gym trainers of ‘love jihad’, fuelling Bajrang Dal’s campaign
IRAM SIDDIQUE
03 June, 2025
Bhopal: Alok Sharma, BJP MP from Bhopal, has stirred controversy once again by stating that a list of gyms employing Muslim trainers is being compiled and will soon be submitted to the police.
Sharma’s statement came just days after members of the Bajrang Dal visited gyms in Bhopal’s Ayodhya Nagar locality, searching for Muslim trainers. They later submitted a memorandum to the Ayodhya Nagar Police Station, alleging that Muslim trainers in the city’s gyms are involved in ‘love jihad’.
Speaking to the media Sunday, Sharma said, “There are many gyms in Bhopal and we are also preparing a list where the trainers are allegedly Muslims. There should be women trainers too.”
“We are making a list and will be submitting it to the police. The police will do their work, the law will do its job and in Madhya Pradesh there is Dr Mohan Yadav’s government and no one has the permission to indulge in love jihad or land jihad. The law will take stringent action against such people. This is all I want to say,” added Sharma, elected as MP in 2024.
He has previously served as the mayor of Bhopal and is known for his hardliner image.
Last month, Sharma had demanded that the government sterilise those accused of ‘love jihad’.
In January this year, he proposed exploring Bhopal’s iconic lake in search of remnants of a Vedic city he believes lies submerged beneath it. He made this suggestion during a meeting at Delhi’s Sansad Bhawan, held to assess the heritage potential of cities for conservation efforts.
In the past, Sharma has called for enforcing a uniform 10 pm closing time for all shops across Bhopal. He noted that while commercial areas like New Market and Sarafa adhered to the deadline, several parts of old Bhopal, like Qazi Camp and Laxmi Theatre area, remained open until midnight. The areas pointed out by Sharma are dominated by Muslim community. Sharma also claimed that the late-night markets were “spoiling children”.
Muslim gym trainers face heat
The crackdown on gym trainers in Bhopal began after a Muslim man, identified as Mohsin Khan, was booked by Indore Police on charges of sexual misconduct. Khan, who runs a private shooting range in Indore, was booked along with two others following allegations by a minor girl accusing them of rape, cheating, and molestation. According to the minor, she began working at Khan’s house during the pandemic. She alleged that she was raped, shown obscene videos, and held captive for about 15 days.
Last week, members of the Bajrang Dal visited several gyms in Bhopal, asking those working out to disclose their names and identities. Later that day, they submitted a memorandum to the police, demanding action against ‘outsiders’ who, they alleged, entered the city posing as Hindu men to befriend Hindu women as part of a ‘love jihad’ campaign.
Following reports of these visits, Sub-Inspector Dinesh Sharma was deployed to monitor the situation and ensure there was no law-and-order issue.
However, a video later surfaced showing the sub-inspector sitting with Bajrang Dal members, saying that Muslims should neither be hired as gym trainers nor be allowed in as clients. After the video came to light, he was transferred from the police station and attached to the reserve force.
Speaking to The Print, Mahesh Lilhare, State House Office at Ayodhya Nagar, said, “After the video came to our knowledge, an inquiry was initiated. As of now, Dinesh Sharma has denied making any such remarks and the authenticity of the video is under investigation.”

Man arrested in France after Quran stolen, burned outside Lyon mosque
04 Jun 2025
LYON, June 4 — A man suspected of stealing a Quran from a mosque near the French city of Lyon and then burning it was arrested on Tuesday evening, the public prosecutor’s office said.
He was arrested in the town of Villeurbanne, where the mosque was also located, and is said to be “psychologically fragile”, the prosecutor’s office and a police source told AFP.
On the night of Sunday to Monday, “an individual with an uncovered face entered the prayer room, grabbed a copy of the Quran, set it on fire then dropped it outside the building before fleeing”, the council of mosques in the Rhone region said.
A police source said an investigation had begun into the incident.
The Lyon prosecutor’s office told AFP that police were looking into a case of “damage or deterioration by means dangerous to people, committed on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nation or religion”.
The incident came after a man who had posted racist videos shot dead his Tunisian neighbour and badly wounded a Turkish man in the southern town of Puget-sur-Argens on Saturday.
The suspected killer, a Frenchman born in 1971, fled the scene in a car but was arrested not far away after his partner alerted police.
According to Le Parisien newspaper, the suspect said he “swore allegiance to the French flag” and called on the French to “shoot” people of foreign origin in one of his videos posted on social media.
Anti-terrorism prosecutors have taken over the investigation into the case, the first such racist attack linked to the far right to be dealt with as “terrorism” since their office was set up in 2019.
In a separate incident in April, a man stabbed a Malian man to death in a mosque, a case being handled by regional prosecutors.
France is home to the largest Muslim community in the European Union, as well as the largest Jewish population outside Israel and the United States.
There has also been a rise in reported attacks against members of France’s Jewish community since Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023 and the Israeli military responded with a devastating military offensive on the Gaza Strip.
France’s Holocaust memorial and three Paris synagogues and a restaurant were vandalised with paint overnight on Saturday.
A Turkish-born man who burned a Quran in London was on Monday found guilty of a religiously aggravated public order offence.
Sweden has seen a series of burnings of the Islamic holy book, most notably by Iraqi Christian Salwan Momika. He was shot dead in January. — AFP

Police told of racist attack before man killed
4 June 2025
An elderly man who was racially abused before being fatally attacked had told police he witnessed an assault on another Asian man yards from his home two weeks earlier, the BBC has found.
Bhim Kohli had been walking his dog in a park in Leicestershire in September when he was punched and kicked by a 14-year-old boy while a girl, 12, filmed the attack.
The BBC has learnt that Mr Kohli spoke to officers in August after he saw two white boys aged 12 and 13 racially abuse a man and throw a large rock at him near the same park where the 80-year-old encountered his own attackers.
Leicestershire Police said "organisational learning" to improve logging anti-social behaviour had been identified.
Mr Kohli died the day after the "intense attack" against him in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town near Leicester, for which the boy and girl, now aged 15 and 13 respectively, were both convicted of manslaughter. They are due to be sentenced on Thursday.
Another eyewitness to the attack in August, Linda Haigh, said she warned police about racially motivated problems in the area before Mr Kohli died, and believes he would still be alive had they taken her more seriously.
The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, was walking to Franklin Park on 17 August when he was targeted by the two boys, who were not involved in Mr Kohli's death.
He told the BBC: "One of the boys started picking up stones and throwing them at me... and then the same boy picked up a quite a large rock from the front garden of one of the houses there, and tried to throw it at me."
The man, aged in his 40s, said they shouted at him to "go back to your village".
"It was a throwback to back to the 80s, when it was quite commonplace to be racially abused," he said.
"I was shocked that this kind of behaviour was still around society.
"I've not been in that situation for a long time, maybe 40 years."
It was when one of the boys picked up a wooden fence post and tried to hit the man with it that others - including Mr Kohli and his daughter Susan, and their neighbour Ms Haigh - intervened, according to the man.
He said he was shocked by the "kind of behaviour from such a young age group".
"The racist language, the violence used as well... they were trying to physically hurt me," he added.
"The anger, but more just the vitriol of the whole thing."
Police were called but the pair were not arrested until three days after the death of Mr Kohli, according to the man.
He believes a greater police presence in the area following the assault could have prevented the attack on Mr Kohli two weeks later.
"They should have really looked at putting more presence there, more officers, maybe mobile police cars driving around," he said.
"They could have deterred them. It's obviously very tragic."
During the trial of Mr Kohli's killers, the court was told about an occasion "a week or two" before his death when the girl convicted of his manslaughter was present while other children threw apples at him.
The jury was also shown a video she had filmed on her phone of another Asian man having a water balloon thrown at him and being racially abused.
The BBC has also been told it was reported to police that in July Mr Kohli had stones thrown at him, was spat at and had been racially abused by a group of children after he told them to get off his neighbour's garage roof.
Ch Supt Jonathan Starbuck, of Leicestershire Police, said: "Prior to Mr Kohli's death, police were aware of two reports of anti-social behaviour involving youths in the Franklin Park area which were being investigated.
"Partnership work in the area following Mr Kohli's death did identify further incidents which had not been reported."
He added an investigation conducted by the force, reviewed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, did not identify any "misconduct or missed opportunities which could have prevented Mr Kohli's death".
The attacks have left the victim of the August assault fearful for his safety and that of his elderly parents, who also live in the area.
His father, like Mr Kohli, likes to go for a walk, but since being targeted, he tells him not to, especially in the dark, he told the BBC.
"Even my nephews... you worry about them as well because you just don't know. It's just become more violent," he said.
The two boys involved in the August assault appeared in youth court in Leicester in December charged with racially or religiously aggravated common assault.
They admitted the offences but were later dealt with out of court by way of a deferred youth caution following a referral to the youth justice panel for an out-of-court disposal.
The process aims to divert young people away from the criminal justice system where possible, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
Ms Haigh, who was friends with Mr Kohli for more than 20 years, told the BBC she called police when she saw the two boys involved in the August assault pick up the boulder from outside her neighbour's house and throw it at the man.
She said she was aware of similar attacks by young people happening last summer in Braunstone Town and told police it needed to be "nipped in the bud".
"I don't think it was taken serious enough," she said.
"I think they should have acted on it. I feel that we've been totally let down."
Ch Supt Starbuck said: "We continue to monitor the area of Franklin Park and have engaged with the community through a local survey, drop-in centres, engagement with local schools, youth work and proactive policing patrols."

Dutch government collapses after far-right leader quits coalition
4 June 2025
The Dutch government has collapsed after Geert Wilders withdrew his far-right party from the governing coalition following a row over migration.
Prime Minister Dick Schoof confirmed he was stepping down on Tuesday and offered the resignation of the cabinet to King Willem-Alexander.
In televised remarks following an emergency cabinet meeting, Schoof said Wilders' decision to withdraw the support of his PVV party was "irresponsible and unnecessary".
"As far as I'm concerned, this shouldn't have happened," he added.
The governing coalition was in place for less than one year.
The row which led to its collapse came after Wilders pushed for 10 additional asylum measures, including a freeze on applications, halting the construction of reception centres and limiting family reunification.
Schoof had made a last-minute appeal to coalition party leaders on Tuesday morning, but the meeting lasted just one minute before Wilders walked out, ending the coalition.
"No signature for our asylum plans. PVV leaves the coalition," said Wilders on X.
There was shock and anger among political leaders, many of whom pointed out that several of Wilders' demands were similar to policies already in the coalition agreement, and that they would not stand in the PVV's way to implement them.
Many of the additional proposals put forward by Wilders had been dismissed during coalition talks because of legal concerns.
Wilders' decision has put an end to an uneasy governing coalition which was born in July 2024 after months of political wrangling following elections the previous year.
His anti-immigration, far-right PVV was the largest party. The other members were the conservative-liberal VVD, the Farmers' Citizen Movement (BBB) and the centrist New Social Contract.
From the start the coalition seemed a marriage of convenience, characterised by infighting and appeared to struggle to push through any of policies it had proudly promoted.
Following its collapse, Wilders' former coalition partners accused him of engineering the crisis. VVD leader Dilan Yesilgoz said the move was "super irresponsible", adding: "This wasn't about asylum at all."
"I think Wilders is betraying the Netherlands," said deputy Prime Minister Mona Keijzer from the BBB.
But Wilders appears to feel emboldened. On Tuesday he told reporters that he intended to become prime minister of the Netherlands "and ensure that the PVV becomes bigger than ever in the next elections".
Sandra Phlippen, the chief economist for ABN AMRO bank, said the immediate economic impact of the cabinet's collapse appeared minimal because during its 11 months in office the government had "barely made any concrete plans".
Polls show the far right and Green-Left parties are neck-and-neck, with migration and cost-of-living issues fuelling political volatility across Europe.
Wilders wanted the government to collapse as the support for his Freedom Party continues to drop in the polls, according to Armida van Rij, the Head of the Europe Programme at Chatham House.
With the Nato summit due to be held in the Hague at the end of the month, Schoof's ministers will seek to remain in power in a caretaker capacity until a date is set for the Netherlands to return to the polls - likely in the autumn, according to Dutch media.
In the Dutch political system, becoming prime minister requires forming a majority coalition in the 150-seat parliament.
Even if Wilders again surpasses the political pundits expectations, his decision to collapse the government is being seen as reckless - and perceptions he is putting personal ambition above national stability could further complicate his ability to form alliances after the next election.
The parties that were reluctant or refused to go into government with Wilders after the last election are likely to find that kind of partnership even less attractive now.
In addition, by toppling the coalition over the issue of asylum, it is likely Wilders will put it at the centre of his upcoming election campaign.
However, given that his party had been responsible for asylum and immigration for almost a year, there are no guarantees that such a gamble will pay off.

Ukrainian Air Force admits modern Russian jets trump F-16s
3 Jun, 2025
Ukraine’s Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets are outmatched by Russia's newer aircraft and missile systems, the head of the Communications Department of the Ukrainian Air Force, Yury Ignat, has said.
Washington gave its NATO allies the green light to send their surplus US-made jets to Ukraine in 2023.
“We are getting Western equipment, we are getting aircraft. Today, we have F16s, we already have Mirages,” he said in an interview with the outlet Ukrainian Pravda published on Tuesday. “They have already been in use. We understand that they are not the newest.”
Ignat stressed the importance of the detection range of the jets’ radar, and the strike range of its weapons.
“Unfortunately, Russia has planes today that see further, and missiles that shoot further. Even compared now with the F-16,” he said.
Ukraine's older Soviet-era jets such as the MiG-29 and Su-27 are “no comparison at all,” he added. “It's like pitting a Makarov pistol against a sniper rifle.”
The current modifications of the F-16 that Ukraine has “cannot compete one-on-one in an air battle” with the newer Russian Su-35 multirole fighter, Ignat said in March.
The total number of F-16s given to Kiev has not been released, but it is believed that Ukraine was given 18 last year. Three of the jets have been destroyed, Ignat has confirmed.
Last month, Ignat admitted that US-designed Patriot air defense systems have also been struggling against Russian weapons. Russian Iskander cruise missiles “perform evasive maneuvers” and drop decoy flares in their final approach phase, “thwarting the Patriot’s trajectory calculations,” he told Le Monde.
Russia has repeatedly condemned the supplies of Western armaments to Kiev, stressing that they will not change the course of the conflict, and slammed F-16 deliveries as an escalation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that if jets taking part in the conflict take off from air bases outside Ukraine, Moscow would consider those bases to be hostile.

Govt revises definition of freedom fighter
Jun 4, 2025
The government last night promulgated an ordinance redefining the term "freedom fighter" (Bir Muktijoddha) and introducing three new categories.
The new categories are Muktijuddher Shohojogi (associate of the Liberation War); Muktijoddha Poribar (family of a freedom fighter); and Muktijuddher Shohojogi Poribar (family of a Liberation War associate).
The National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance-2025 amended the previous National Freedom Fighters Council Act-2022.
The definition of "associate of the Liberation War" specifically includes all Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) who were affiliated with the wartime provisional government of Bangladesh (Mujibnagar Government) and later considered members of the constituent assembly.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, and more than 400 others were members of the constituent assembly and used to be recognised as freedom fighters.
The ordinance, however, included the Mujibnagar government in the definition of "Bir Muktijoddha".
Bir Muktijoddha (freedom fighter)
According to the ordinance, the new definition of a Bir Muktijoddha reads:
"Bir Muktijoddha is someone who, between March 26 and December 16, 1971, either prepared for war and received training within villages across the country, or crossed the border into India to enroll in various training camps with the aim of participating in the Liberation War. These individuals actively took part in the war against the occupying and invading Pakistani armed forces and their local collaborators -- Razakars, Al-Badr, Al-Shams, the then Muslim League, Jamaat-e-Islami, Nezame Islam, and the Peace Committee -- towards achieving Bangladesh's independence.
Those recognised as freedom fighters must be civilians who were of the minimum age as determined by the government during the time of war. Also included as freedom fighters are members of the armed forces, East Pakistan Rifles (EPR), police, the Mujibnagar government and its recognised forces, naval commandos, Kilo Force, and Ansar members.
All women who were subjected to torture by the Pakistani forces and their collaborators (Biranganas); and all doctors, nurses, and medical assistants who provided treatment to wounded freedom fighters in field hospitals during the war will continue to be regarded as freedom fighters.
Muktijuddher Shohojogi (associate of the Liberation War)
The ordinance defines an "associate of the Liberation War" as follows: "Individuals who, between March 26 and December 16, 1971, resided either within the country or abroad and played a role in inspiring freedom fighters, organising support, accelerating the war effort, and contributing to the achievement of Bangladesh's independence through organisational leadership, global opinion building, securing diplomatic support, and strengthening psychological resolve."
These associates include the Bangladeshi professionals who were abroad during the Liberation War and made significant contributions in favour of the war, and Bangladeshi citizens who actively engaged in shaping international public opinion.
The persons who served under the Mujibnagar government as officials, employees, diplomats, or who were appointed as doctors, nurses, or assistants by the government will also be considered associates.
All MNAs and MPAs affiliated with the Mujibnagar government who were later recognised as members of the Constituent Assembly will also fall under this category.
Besides, all artists and personnel of the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, and all Bangladeshi journalists who worked in support of the war both at home and abroad and members of the Swadhin Bangla football team will now be considered associates of the Liberation War.
They would previously be considered freedom fighters.
The ordinance defines a "freedom fighter's family" as: "The spouse, son, daughter, father, or mother of a recognised freedom fighter."
The family of a Liberation War associate is defined as: "The spouse, son, daughter, father, or mother of a recognized associate of the Liberation War."
The ordinance also makes a slight revision to the definition of the Liberation War itself. It now states:
"The Liberation War refers to the armed struggle, conducted between March 26 and December 16, 1971, by the people of Bangladesh to establish a sovereign democratic state founded on equality, human dignity, and social justice, against the occupying and invading Pakistani armed forces and their collaborators -- Razakars, Al-Badr, Al-Shams, the then Muslim League, Jamaat-e-Islami, Nezame Islam, and the Peace Committee."
The new definition of Liberation War drops the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The previous one mentioned that the war was waged responding to Bangabandhu's call for independence.
Freedom fighter and Liberation War researcher Afsan Chowdhury said the move was entirely a bureaucratic decision.
"We have seen this since 1972 -- every time a new government comes to power, they create a new list of freedom fighters. There are personal benefits involved," he told the newspaper late last night.
"People will not accept this. The Liberation War will remain as it always has been -- in the hearts of the general people."
Talking to The Daily Star, valiant freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman, also an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, said, "They [the government] do not uphold the spirit of the Liberation War ... It does not matter to me what types of ordinances they issue. The Liberation War will forever remain in its rightful place."

ICT fixes June 19 to hear contempt of court petition filed against Hasina
Jun 3, 2025
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has set June 19 to hear the prosecution's petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her remarks made in a telephonic conversation with a party leader.
Although the ICT had scheduled today for the hearing, Hasina and the other alleged contemnors neither appeared before the tribunal nor responded through their lawyers, despite issuance of notice and publishing a circular in two newspapers asking them to appear before the tribunal or have their lawyer respond.
The case stems from a leaked phone conversation that circulated on social media last year before being picked up by several mainstream media outlets.
In the audio clip, Hasina is allegedly heard telling former Gobindaganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Shakil Akanda Bulbul that "I have had 227 cases filed against me, so I have received a licence to kill 227 people."
The tribunal considers this statement contemptuous after a petition was filed in this regard on April 30 this year.
After the court proceedings, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said, "The tribunal gave the contemnors another chance and fixed June 19 for a full hearing of the matter and to dispose of it or issue an order."
Besides, the tribunal today issued arrest warrants against four accused, including Habibur Rahman, former commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, in a case filed for crimes against humanity over the killing of six protesters in the city's Chankharpul on August 5 last year.
Three other accused are Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, the then DMP joint commissioner; Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former additional deputy commissioner; and Mohammad Imrul, former assistant commissioner of Ramna Zone of DMP.
One May 25, the tribunal took cognisance of charges against the eight police officers, including the four, in the case and fixed today to produce the previously arrested four accused and instructed the four absconding officers, including Habibur, to appear before it.
As the four absconding police officers failed to appear before the tribunal today, the court ordered that a summons be published in two national daily newspapers tomorrow, directing them to appear before the court on June 22.
Accused former inspector Arshad Hossain and constables Sujon Hossain, Imaz Hossain, and Nasirul Islam were produced before the court today.
Meanwhile, the tribunal set June 23 for a hearing on a petition seeking treatment of former Awami League minister Faruk Khan at the Combined Military Hospital.
The tribunal issued the order after Faruk Khan's counsel Mustafizur Rahman Khan placed a medical report, prepared by the jail authorities as instructed by the tribunal, on the health condition of his client.
Faruk Khan is in jail custody and is an accused in a case filed against 45, including several ministers, over crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

US Navy to rename ship honouring gay rights leader and veteran Harvey Milk
June 4, 2025
The US Navy plans to remove the name of gay rights leader and Navy veteran Harvey Milk from one of its ships, and may change the titles of other vessels honouring civil rights leaders.
The plans were outlined in documents obtained by BBC's US partner CBS News that show a timeline for when the renaming of USNS Harvey Milk would be shared with the public.
It comes during Pride Month in June, an annual commemoration of the LGBT community that coincides with the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 1969.
The directive also comes amid a broader movement by the Trump administration to curb programmes that promote diversity and inclusion across federal departments.
Sean Parnell, a spokesman for the Pentagon, told CBS on Tuesday that the renaming of the USNS Harvey Milk is to realign the US military with the Trump administration's goal of "re-establishing the warrior culture" in the armed forces.
The memo calls for Navy Secretary John Phelan to select a new name for the fleet oiler. That name change would then be communicated to other senior US Navy officials after a legal review.
It also outlines other vessels recommended for renaming, including the USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, named after the late liberal Supreme Court justice, and the USNS Harriet Tubman, named after the American slavery abolitionist.
Harvey Milk is known for being the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was assassinated 10 months after he was sworn in.
The push to rename the USNS Harvey Milk comes after a directive issued by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier this year instructing US military personnel to stop hosting events tied to heritage or awareness months.
This directive banned resources and manpower from being used on events like Pride Month, Black History Month and Women's History Month, citing concerns that they would undermine unity in the military.
US President Donald Trump also issued executive orders earlier this year that banned diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the government, and that made it official US policy to recognise two sexes, male and female.
Supporters of DEI programmes say they address historical underrepresentation and discrimination against certain groups, including racial minorities, but critics say such initiatives are themselves discriminatory.
The move to rename the Harvey Milk and other ships has been criticised by prominent Democrats, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
In a statement to CBS, Pelosi called the move a "vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American dream".
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X on Tuesday that Hegseth "should be ashamed of himself and reverse this immediately."

London police identify suspect in alleged hate-motivated incident
Jun 03, 2025
London police have charged a 34-year-old man after what they describe as a hate-motivated incident that happened last week.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Joseph Howard Coddington, charged with assault and uttering threats after a man threatened to burn down an elderly woman’s house near Marconi Boulevard and Trafalgar Street on the morning of May 29. Police said the man also tried to spit on the woman before walking away.
Based on “the nature of the comments made,” the incident was deemed hate-motivated, police had said at the time. The woman wasn’t physically injured.
In a social media post on May 31, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said the victim was Muslim and was told to “go back to your country.”
“This has happened just days before we mark four years since a Muslim family of three generations were murdered in a terrorist attack in London,” the post added.
Police on Tuesday said Coddington’s whereabouts were unknown. They describe him as white, five-foot-eight, 150 pounds, with short brown and blonde hair, scruffy facial hair and brown eyes. They urge anyone who sees him not to approach but to call 911.
Anyone with information or relevant dashcam, doorbell or security footage is asked to contact police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
London police chief Thai Truong said Saturday that police are committed to working with the Muslim community to address Islamophobia.
“As we prepare to mark the anniversary of the tragedy that took the lives of Our London Family, this recent hate-motivated incident is a troubling reminder that the work to confront anti-Muslim hate is far from over,” he said.
Friday marks four years since four members of the Afzaal family– a Muslim family out for an evening walk – were killed in what police called an Islamophobic terrorist attack.
The case is one of several recent alleged hate crimes in London. Last June, a northwest London home where pro-Palestinian signs had been repeatedly vandalized was set on fire, causing $30,000 in damage. And in November, two employees at a south London Arabic grocery store were sprayed with a noxious substance by a masked man.

Musk calls Trump's tax bill a 'disgusting abomination'
June 4, 2025
Elon Musk has hit out at President Donald Trump's signature tax and spending bill, describing it as a "disgusting abomination", in a widening rift between the two allies.
The budget - which includes multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and more defence spending while also allowing the US government to borrow more money - was passed by the House of Representatives last month.
"Shame on those who voted for it," Musk said in a post on X about the legislative linchpin of Trump's second-term agenda.
The tech billionaire left the administration abruptly last week after 129 days working to cut costs with his team, known as Doge.
The comments mark his first public disagreement with Trump since leaving government, after having previously called the plan "disappointing".
The South African-born tech billionaire's time in the Trump administration came to an end on 31 May, although Trump said that "he will, always, be with us, helping all the way".
In its current form, the bill - which Trump refers to as the "big beautiful bill" - has been estimated to increase the budget deficit - the difference between what the government spends and the revenue it receives - by about $600bn (£444bn) in the next fiscal year.
In a series of posts on X on Tuesday, Musk said that the "outrageous, pork-filled" spending bill will "massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America [sic] citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt".
In American politics "pork" refers to spending on projects in lawmakers' constituencies.
Musk, who had previously vowed to fund campaign challenges against any Republican that votes against Trump's agenda, added a political warning in another post.
"In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people," he wrote.
Asked about Musk's comments soon after the first post, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said "the President already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill".
"This is one, big, beautiful bill," she added. "And he's sticking to it."
The legislation also pledges to extend soon-to-expire tax cuts passed during the first Trump administration in 2017, as well as an influx of funds for defence spending and to fund the administration's mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
To the dismay of fiscal conservatives, it would lift the limit on the amount of money the government can borrow, known as the debt ceiling, to $4tn.
The comments from Musk reflect wider tensions among Republicans over the plan, which faced stiff opposition from different wings of the party as it worked its way through the House.
The Senate has now taken it up, and divisions are already emerging in that chamber, which is also narrowly controlled by Republicans.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has said over the last few days he will not support the bill if it raises the debt ceiling.
"The GOP [the Republican Party] will own the debt once they vote for this," he told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, over the weekend.
Trump responded to Paul with a series of social media posts, accusing him of having "very little understanding of the bill" and saying that the "people of Kentucky can't stand him".
"His ideas are actually crazy," Trump wrote.
Republican lawmakers pushed back on Musk's comments, with Senate majority leader John Thune telling reporters the party plans to "proceed full speed ahead" despite "a difference of opinion".
"We have an agenda that everybody campaigned on, most notably the president," he said.
Mike Johnson - the Republican Speaker who has ushered the legislation through the House - told reporters on Capitol Hill that "my friend Elon is terribly wrong".
"It's a very important first start. Elon is missing it," Johnson said.
Johnson said he had a 20-minute phone call with the tycoon about the bill on Monday, adding that its phasing out of electric vehicle tax credits could "have an effect" on Tesla, Musk's firm.
"I lament that," Johnson said, expressing surprise that Musk criticised the bill despite their call. "I just deeply regret he's made this mistake.”
Among the issues that upset Musk involved air traffic control at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), according to Axios.
Musk was hoping it would be run on his Starlink satellite system, but he was denied because of issues relating to the technology and the appearance of a conflict of interest, the political outlet reported.
Some Democrats welcomed Musk’s comments despite their previous criticism of him and the work of Doge.
"Even Elon Musk, who's been part of the whole process, and is one of Trump's buddies, said the bill is bad," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. "We can imagine how bad this bill is."
Trump and Republicans in Congress have set a deadline of 4 July to get the measure passed and signed into law.
Musk supported Trump in last year's November election with donations of more than $250m.
To make peace with spending hawks, Trump is also asking Congress to pass a plan that would reduce current spending by $9.4bn, a figure derived from Doge's work.
It would mainly slash funding for foreign aid, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and for broadcasters NPR and PBS.

Canada proposes sweeping immigration and security bill
June 4, 2025
The Canadian government has proposed a bill to restrict some asylum claims and give authorities more power to halt the processing of immigration applications.
Canada's immigration minister Lena Diab said the Strong Borders Act is meant to curb organised crime and the flow of illegal drugs and weapons, while boosting the "integrity" of the country's immigration system.
It includes provisions that would give police more power to monitor Canada's shared border with the US.
It could also bar those who have been in Canada for more than year from filing a claim for asylum. But critics said the bill, which seeks to expand authorities' ability to open and inspect mail, would breach civil liberties.
The proposed legislation comes amid increasing pressure on Canada, which has historically been open to newcomers, to restrict immigration as the country deals with strained public services and a housing crisis.
The previous government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau relied on ambitious immigration targets to fuel economic growth, and oversaw a sharp increase in people entering Canada as temporary workers and students.
At the same time, Canada saw a spike in asylum claims, with applicants waiting up to two years for their case to be heard due to the backlog.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won April's federal election, has promised to address Canada's "unsustainable" immigration levels.
Under current law, refugees can claim asylum in Canada either when they arrive at a port of entry, like an airport, or when they are already in Canada, with no restrictions on how long they can be in the country before claiming asylum.
Restrictions on cash transactions
The new rules would bar asylum claims from those who have been in Canada for over a year, potentially making them subject to deportation.
They would also require people entering Canada from the US under the Safe Third Country Agreement - a long-standing deal requiring migrants to seek asylum in the first "safe" country they reach, whether it is the US or Canada - to file a claim in Canada within 14 days for it to be considered.
Those who fail to adhere to those deadlines would still be able to undergo a risk assessment that would determine whether their safety is at risk if they are sent away.
The law also gives the government power to outright suspend processing new applications "for matters of public health and national security."
The wide-ranging 127-page measure would also expand the government's power to open mail to advance a criminal investigation.
And it would introduce restrictions on cash transactions above C$10,000 ($7,300; £5,400) and cash deposits by one individual into another's account.
Addressing 'irritants for the US'
Jenny Kwan, a member of parliament from the left-leaning New Democratic Party, said the bill "should be alarming to many Canadians".
A big chunk of the new legislation deals with curbing the flow of fentanyl and illegal weapons across the US-Canada border - an issue that US President Donald Trump has used as justification for his tariffs on Canada.
Gary Anandasangaree, Canada's public safety minister, said he would brief US border tsar Tom Homan on the new legislation.
He acknowledged that the law would address issues that have been "irritants for the US", and that it would likely play into trade negotiations between Canada and the US.
But he added "it's not exclusively about the United States", and is also about securing Canada's borders.
Some advocacy groups have criticised the new rules. The Migrant Rights Network called the proposed measures "immoral", and said they "drastically restrict refugee protections and allow for mass deportations".

Trump's 50% tariffs on metals come into effect
June 4, 2025
Natalie Sherman
US President Donald Trump has signed an order doubling tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%.
The move hikes import taxes on the metals, which are used in everything from cars to canned food, for the second time since March.
Trump has said the measures, which came into effect on Wednesday, are intended to secure the future of the American steel industry.
However, critics say the protections could wreak havoc on steel producers outside the US, spark retaliation from trade partners, and come at a punishing cost for American users of the metals.
Hours before he hiked the duties, many firms directly affected could hardly believe the plan was moving forward, hoping it would turn out to be temporary or some kind of negotiating ploy.
Even as Trump signed the orders, the UK was granted a carve-out from the measures, leaving duties on its steel and aluminium at 25%, a move Trump said reflected its ongoing trade discussions with the US.
"Always the question with Mr Trump is, is this a tactic or is this a long-term plan?" said Rick Huether, chief executive of Independent Can Co, a Maryland-based business, which brings in steel from Europe and turns it into decorative cookie tins, popcorn boxes, and other products.
Trump's moves earlier this year had prompted him to put investments on hold and raise prices. He said he feared his customers would turn to alternatives such as plastic or paper boxes due to all of the uncertainty.
"There's a lot of chaos," he said.
The US is the biggest importer of steel in the world, after the European Union, getting most of the metal from Canada, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea, according to the US government.
During his first term, Trump imposed tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium, citing a law that gives him authority to protect industries considered vital to national security.
But many imports ultimately escaped the duties after the US struck trade deals with allies and granted exemptions to certain imports at the request of firms.
Trump ended those carve-outs in March, saying he was unhappy with the way the protections had been weakened.
At Friday's rally at the US Steel factory, he said he wanted to make tariffs so high that US businesses would have no alternative but to buy from American suppliers.
"Nobody's going to get around that," he said of the 50% rate. "That means that nobody's going to be able to steal your industry. It's at 25% - they can get over that fence. At 50%, they can no longer get over the fence."
Reaction in the UK and Europe
As of May, imports and the rate of raw steel production in the US had changed little since last year before Trump raised tariffs, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
But steel imports fell 17% in April, compared to March. And businesses selling the metals into the US said they expected Trump's latest announcement to lead to an even more dramatic drop.
Trump's moves in March had already prompted Canada and the European Union to prepare to hit back with tariffs of their own American products.
On Tuesday, Olof Gill, spokesperson for economic security and trade for the European Commission told the BBC the two sides were engaged in intense talks to try to make progress toward an agreement.
"We're negotiating hard to try and make good deals," he said.
"We really hope that the Americans will roll back on this latest tariff threat, as they have done on others, but that remains to be seen."
In the UK, Trump's announcement put new pressure on the government to pin down the trade deal in the works with the US, which had been expected to provide some protection from the March metals tariffs.
Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris on Tuesday.
His office said it was "pleased" that the trade talks had protected UK steel from the latest duties.
"We will continue to work with the US to implement our agreement, which will see the 25% US tariffs on steel removed," he said.
Gareth Stace, director general of UK Steel, which represents steelmakers, told the BBC that his members had already seen orders cancelled and delayed as a result of the 25% tariffs put in place in March.
He warned that a 50% tariff would be "catastrophic" for UK exports to the US, about 7% of overall exports.
"The introduction of 50% tariffs immediately puts the shutters up," he said. "Most of our orders, if not all of them, will now be cancelled."
Economists said the US economy is also facing damage, as prices rise as a result of the new measures.
A 2020 analysis estimated that Trump's first term tariffs created roughly 1,000 jobs in the steel industry, but cost the economy 75,000 jobs in other sectors, such as manufacturing and construction.
Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the Tax Foundation, said that she expected to see even more extreme job losses this time.
"Some of the strongest evidence is against tariffs on intermediate inputs like steel and aluminium, finding they are much more harmful because they increase the cost of production in the United States," she said. "It's just very foolish to double down on this type of tariff in particular."
Chad Bartusek is director of supply chain management at Drill Rod & Tool Steels, a small, family-owned manufacturing business in Illinois, which brings in about 800,000 pounds of Austrian-made steel each year, at specifications he says are not produced in the US.
Mr Bartusek said he was currently waiting on three containers worth of steel rod, which would have entered the US without duties at the start of the year.
As of last week, he had expected to pay tariff costs about $72,000. Instead, he is looking at a tariff bill of almost $145,000.
"I woke up Saturday morning, looked at the news and my jaw dropped," he said of Trump's announcement.
Mr Bartusek said business had been steady until a few weeks ago.
But his firm raised prices earlier this year by 8% to 14% to help cover the new cost of the tariffs. Now customers have been ordering more cautiously and he has had to cut back hours for workers.
"It's one punch after the other," he said. "Hopefully, this settles down quickly."

Chinese nationals accused of smuggling 'dangerous biological pathogen' into US
June 4, 2025
Ali Abbas Ahmadi
Two Chinese nationals have been accused of smuggling a fungus into the US that officials describe as a "dangerous biological pathogen".
Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, have been charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods, false statements, and visa fraud, the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced on Tuesday.
The complaint alleges Mr Liu tried to smuggle the fungus through Detroit airport so he could study it at a University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend, Ms Jian, worked.
The fungus called Fusarium graminearum can cause a disease in wheat, barley, maize and rice that can wipe out crops and lead to vomiting and liver damage if it gets into food.
The fungus is described in scientific literature as a "potential agroterrorism weapon", according to the US Attorney's Office, adding it is responsible for "billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year."
Officials further allege Ms Jian received funding from the Chinese government for her research on the pathogen in China. They also claim she is a member of the Chinese Communist Party.
United States Attorney Jerome F Gorgon Jr described the allegations as of the "gravest national security concerns".
"These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a 'potential agroterrorism weapon' into in the [sic] heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme."
The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI and US Customs and Border Protection.
Ms Jian is due to appear in court in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday.
The BBC has reached out to the University of Michigan and the Chinese embassy in Washington DC for comment.
The charges come amid strained relations between the US and China, and just days after the Trump administration vowed to "aggressively" revoke the visas of Chinese nationals studying in the US.
Beijing also said Washington "severely violated" a trade truce reached in Geneva last month, when both countries lowered tariffs on goods imported from each other.
Earlier this week, a Chinese student at the University of Michigan was charged for illegally voting in the 2024 election.

Israel army says shelling Syria after projectiles launched
June 04, 2025
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said it was shelling targets in Syria on Tuesday in response to a pair of projectile launches, with Defense Minister Israel Katz saying he held Syria’s leader “directly responsible.”
A military statement said that “two projectiles were identified crossing from Syria into Israeli territory, and fell in open areas,” adding in a subsequent statement that its “artillery struck in southern Syria” following the launches.
Syria’s official news agency SANA reported shelling “targeting the Yarmuk Basin, in the west of Daraa” province.
Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said bombardments had hit farmland in the province, without reporting casualties.
“Violent explosions shook southern Syria, notably the town of Quneitra and the Daraa region, following Israeli aerial strikes” overnight Tuesday to Wednesday, the monitor said in a statement.
Israel said it had targeted weapons belonging to Syrian authorities following the launch of the projectiles.
There were no reports of casualties or damage on the Israeli side due to the projectiles, which the military said triggered air raid sirens in parts of the southern Golan Heights, a territory Israel conquered from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981.
Katz, the Israeli defense minister, said in a statement released by his office that “we view the president of Syria as directly responsible for any threat or fire directed at the State of Israel.”
“A full response will follow shortly,” he added.
Syria’s interim president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, led the Islamist group that spearheaded the offensive that toppled longtime ruler Bashar Assad in December.
Israeli media said Tuesday’s projectiles were the first fired from Syria into Israeli territory since Assad’s fall.
Following his overthrow, Israel moved its forces into the UN-patrolled demilitarised zone in the Golan Heights, and has carried out hundreds of strikes against military targets in Syria.
Israel says the strikes aim to stop advanced weapons reaching Syria’s new authorities, whom it considers jihadists.
In a statement on Sunday, Israel’s military said its troops were continuing “defensive operations in southern Syria” to “dismantle terrorist infrastructure and protect the residents of the Golan Heights.”
Syria and Israel have technically been at war since 1948.

Israel army says projectiles launched from Syria fell in open areas, intercepts Yemen missile
June 03, 2025
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said two projectiles launched from Syria crossed into Israeli territory on Tuesday, but fell without causing damage near two settlements in the occupied Golan Heights.
“Following the sirens that sounded in Haspin and Ramat Magshimim at 21:36, two projectiles were identified crossing from Syria into Israeli territory and fell in open areas,” the military said in a statement.
Haspin and Ramat Magshimim are both located in the southern Golan Heights, a territory which Israel occupied from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981.
Israeli media reported that Tuesday’s projectiles were the first fired from Syria into Israeli territory since the fall of longtime Syrian leader Bashar Assad in December.
Following Assad’s overthrow, Israel moved its forces into the UN-patrolled demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights and has carried out hundreds of strikes against military targets in Syria.
Israel says its strikes aim to stop advanced weapons from reaching Syria’s new authorities, whom it considers jihadists.
In a statement on Sunday, Israel’s military said its troops were continuing “defensive operations in southern Syria” to “dismantle terrorist infrastructure and protect the residents of the Golan Heights.”
Syria and Israel have technically been at war since 1948.
Yemeni missile
In a separate incident, Tel Aviv said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen on Tuesday, with a series of explosions heard over Jerusalem.
"Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted," the Israeli military said.
Yemen’s Houthi militants have repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel since the Gaza war broke out in October 2023 with Palestinian militant group Hamas’s attack on Israel.
Tuesday’s interception was the third in as many days.
Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service said no injuries were reported.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile attack on Monday, which they said had targeted Israel’s main airport near Tel Aviv.
Israel has carried out several strikes in Yemen in retaliation for the attacks, including on ports and the airport in the capital Sanaa.

Jordan condemns Israeli settler incursion into Al-Aqsa, reaffirms responsibility for mosque
June 03, 2025
LONDON: The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs condemned the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by extremist Israeli settlers, describing the action as provocative.
On Monday and Tuesday, hundreds of Israeli settlers entered the compound in the Old City, which is part of occupied East Jerusalem. The ministry described the setters’ behavior as “inflammatory acts that aim to impose new temporal and spatial divisions at the mosque.”
Settlers regularly tour the site under the protection of Israeli police and are often accompanied by government officials and far-right ministers.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sufian Qudah said that the settlers’ incursion “would not be possible without the protection and facilitation of the Israeli police,” demanding that the Israeli authorities “halt their irresponsible and dangerous practices.”
On Tuesday, some settlers performed Talmudic rituals in Al-Aqsa compound known as “epic prostration,” in which the worshipper bows low to the ground in a display of humility and reverence, the Petra news agency reported.
Qudah emphasized that the 144-dunam area of Al-Aqsa Mosque is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims. He highlighted that the Jerusalem Endowments Council, which operates under Jordan’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, is the only legal authority responsible for managing and regulating Al-Aqsa’s affairs, Petra added.

Palestinian appeals for blood donations unanswered in Gaza due to widespread hunger, malnutrition
June 03, 2025
LONDON: Palestinian medics are facing challenging conditions while treating patients and the injured in the Gaza Strip amid ongoing Israeli attacks in the coastal enclave.
Health and medical staff have reported to the Wafa news agency that their appeals for community blood donations have gone largely unanswered due to widespread hunger and malnutrition, while life-saving resources are rapidly depleting in many hospitals.
Nearly 2 million Palestinians face an imminent risk of widespread hunger as Israel has mostly restricted access to sufficient humanitarian aid since it resumed its military actions in March.
Hospitals across Gaza are experiencing a critical shortage of essential medications, surgical supplies, and diagnostic imaging equipment, hindering doctors from carrying out emergency procedures necessary to save lives, Wafa added.
Operating rooms, intensive care units, and emergency departments are struggling under the pressure of a growing number of critically injured patients, and fuel is running out to generate power.
On Monday, Palestinian medical sources in Gaza revealed that 41 percent of kidney failure patients have died since October 2023 amid ongoing Israeli attacks and restrictions on humanitarian and medical aid.
Israeli forces destroyed the Noura Al-Kaabi Dialysis Center in northern Gaza over the weekend, one of the few specialized facilities providing kidney dialysis to 160 patients.

UN chief urges Yemen’s Houthis to release aid workers
June 03, 2025
DUBAI: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday demanded Yemen’s Houthi militants release dozens of aid workers, including UN staff, a year after their arrest.
The Iran-backed militants, who control much of the war-torn country, detained 13 UN personnel and more than 50 employees of aid groups last June.
“I renew my call for their immediate and unconditional release,” Guterres said in a statement issued by the office of his special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg.
“The UN and its humanitarian partners should never be targeted, arrested or detained while carrying out their mandates for the benefit of the people they serve,” he added.
A decade of civil war has plunged Yemen into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with more than half of the population relying on aid.
The arrests prompted the United Nations to limit its deployments and suspend activities in some regions of the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country.
The Houthis at the time claimed an “American-Israeli spy cell” was operating under the cover of aid groups — an accusation firmly rejected by the UN.
Guterres also lamented the “deplorable tragedy” of the death in detention of a World Food Programme staffer in February.
The Houthis have kidnapped, arbitrarily detained and tortured hundreds of civilians, including aid workers, during their war against a Saudi-led coalition supporting the beleaguered internationally recognized government.

June 03, 2025
MAKKAH: Several Palestinian pilgrims hosted under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ Guests Program for Hajj and Umrah — supervised by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs — offer their thanks to the Kingdom.
They said the initiative reflected King Salman’s care for Muslims worldwide and his commitment to ensuring they can perform Hajj with dignity and ease, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Palestinian pilgrim Ayman Saleh expressed joy at being selected for Hajj this year and thanked the Saudi leadership for the exceptional services and warm welcome extended to Palestinian pilgrims.
Pilgrim Hussein Kamal praised the outstanding facilities, saying they reflect the Kingdom’s dedication to serving Palestinian pilgrims and helping them perform Hajj comfortably. He expressed deep appreciation to the Saudi leadership for this generous gesture.
Hundreds of relatives of Palestinian political prisoners and martyrs have arrived to perform Hajj under the program. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs received 500 pilgrims from Gaza on Monday, bringing the total number of Palestinians to 1,000.

Traditional Saudi crafts adorn pilgrimage route
June 03, 2025
MAKKAH: Traditional arts and crafts through a modern visual lens can be seen along the Hijrah Road between Makkah and Madinah.
The recently completed billboard project, carried out by the Roads General Authority in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, known as Wrth, aligns with the Year of Handicrafts 2025.
The billboards feature designs inspired by traditional motifs and crafts such as weaving, reflecting national identity, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.
Illustrations highlight the beauty of local arts and regional patterns with the aim of enriching pilgrims’ cultural experience and promoting heritage tourism.
Saudi Arabia has one of the world’s largest and most interconnected road networks, facilitating pilgrim and tourist movement across the Kingdom, and strengthening efforts to highlight its cultural heritage across the regions.
The Roads General Authority has also launched a “mobile sites” service on the Hijrah Road to help pilgrims if their buses break down, ensuring their comfort and safety as they travel between Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites.
The service operates 24/7 during Hajj on the Hijrah Road and can accommodate around 40 pilgrims. It includes air conditioning, rest areas, restrooms, cold beverages and meals.

Municipalities Ministry launches home delivery permit service, effective July 1
June 03, 2025
RIYADH: The Saudi Ministry of Municipalities and Housing launched the Home Delivery Permit service for food and non-food delivery establishments via the Balady platform, Saudi Press Agency reported Tuesday.
This initiative supports ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of life and elevate safety and compliance standards within the delivery sector across the Kingdom.
The delivery service aims to regulate delivery operations within cities by ensuring establishments comply with health and technical requirements, thereby contributing to a safe and efficient environment that enhances consumer confidence.
The requirements for the permit include obtaining a health certificate for all home delivery service workers, securing approval from the authority supervising the commercial activity, clearly displaying the establishment’s name or trademark on delivery vehicles, and ensuring these vehicles comply with the technical and health standards necessary for safe product transportation.
The ministry explained that mandatory enforcement of license issuance will begin on July 1, 2025.
Municipalities will carry out field inspections to ensure compliance and will take regulatory action against violators.
Business owners can apply for the home delivery permit through the Balady platform by visiting: https://balady.gov.sa/en/services/issue-home-delivery-permit.
This initiative is part of the ministry’s broader efforts to develop the regulatory framework for the services sector and to ensure the provision of safe delivery services, in line with the objectives of the Saudi Vision 2030.
Last month, the ministry announced the launch of the Balady Plus app — an intelligent platform aimed at enhancing quality of life in Saudi cities and facilitating daily mobility for residents and visitors.
According to the ministry, Balady Plus was developed by national talents to be more than just a navigation tool. It offers an interactive 3D map experience with precise local content that reflects the real landscape of Saudi cities and adapts to their changes in real time.
The application features smart mobility services, including live updates on roads, locations, and services. It also supports indoor navigation in commercial centers, alerts users about speed bumps, obstacles, and road closures, and integrates data from government entities and the local community.

20 years after embracing Islam, Uruguayan Muslim fulfills his Hajj dream in Makkah
June 03, 2025
MAKKAH: Luis Abi Rachid, a 70-year-old pilgrim from Uruguay and a guest of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Program for Hajj and Umrah, shared the story of his first-ever flight, which he took this year to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj.
After being selected for the program, supervised and implemented by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Rachid described the journey as one filled with peace and spiritual fulfillment, marking the realization of his lifelong wish to perform the fifth pillar of Islam.
“I arrived in the holy land with indescribable feelings,” he said. “I was on my way to perform Umrah and see the Holy Kaaba for the first time in my life, after only seeing it on television. My heart overflowed with longing for this sacred place.
“Hajj is a dream, especially for new Muslims,” Rachid continued.
“When I was selected for the program, I felt a joy beyond words. All praise is due to Allah Almighty, and then to the leadership of Saudi Arabia for turning my dream — and the dreams of many Muslims around the world — into reality.”
Rachid recounted that his journey to Islam began 20 years ago, when a Muslim friend introduced him to the faith over the course of three months.
During that time, he learned about the Holy Qur’an and the practice of prayer, eventually becoming convinced that Islam is the true religion. Since embracing Islam, he has deepened his faith and understanding and has long dreamed of performing Hajj and visiting the Holy Kaaba.
“I declared my Islam without ever expecting that I would embrace the faith, as I had never considered it,” Rachid said.
“But Allah Almighty guided me and brought me from darkness into spiritual clarity. I felt a peace and inner security I had never known. Islam is a religion of balance, moderation, and tranquility — free from excess, extremism, or rigidity. All praise be to Allah Almighty for guiding me and making me one of the Muslims.”
He expressed his gratitude to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their efforts in serving Islam and Muslims and prayed for Saudi Arabia’s continued growth, progress, and prosperity.

New environmental monitoring technologies used for this year’s Hajj
SALEH FAREED
June 03, 2025
Jeddah: Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Environmental Compliance has begun using new satellite monitoring technologies to protect the environment for this year’s Hajj.
The NCEC uses satellite data to monitor and analyze environmental media, including air, water and soil quality.
The center relies on satellites to monitor environmental challenges across wide geographic areas at high speed, enabling emergency teams to quickly reach affected sites.
Hani Al-Subhi, director-general of the Makkah Region branch, spoke to Arab News about the center’s use of satellite technology.
“These technologies help pinpoint the precise locations of environmental challenges, facilitating a rapid response and enhancing the provision of a healthy, pollutant-free environment for pilgrims,” he said
Meanwhile, Abu Talib Zaki, a technical expert in monitoring, spoke about how the center cooperates with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology to collect two types of satellite imagery.
The first is passive remote sensing, which measures reflections of light emitted from other objects.
The second is active remote sensing, which uses light from the satellite itself to create images.
The spatial resolution of the images used reaches 30 cm, meaning that each pixel of the image covers 30x30 cm, allowing for high-precision monitoring of environmental phenomena.
The National Center for Environmental Compliance earlier this week completed 90 percent of the preemptive inspections to ensure the safety of water, air, and soil for Hajj.
Monitoring efforts will continue until pilgrims complete their rituals in a healthy, pollutant-free environment.
The center also uses nine air quality monitoring stations — six located in Makkah and the holy sites and three in Madinah.
These stations operate around the clock to measure air quality, and if any pollutant is detected, field teams are dispatched immediately to the site to identify the source and coordinate with the authorities to eliminate the cause of pollution.

DRC: M23 rebels executed at least 21 civilians in Goma, Human Rights Watch says
June 3, 2025
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Rwanda-backed M23 rebels of executing at least 21 civilians in eastern Democratic Republic Congo.
In a report published on Tuesday, the NGO said the abuses took place on 22 and 23 February in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
HRW said dozens of M23 fighters arrived ni Goma's Kasika neighbourhood on 22 February. They shot seven people in the head near the Katindo military camp, a former Congolese army barracks.
The bodies of 11 more people, including a boy, were found at a construction site about 100 metres from the camp.
The next day, M23 fighters rounded up about 20 men near a sports field in the city, and accused them of belonging to the Congolese army. Sources also told HRW they believed the men were being forcibly recruited. Three men who tried to escape were killed.
Witnesses interviewed by Human Rights Watch said M23 was responsible for the killings.
Human Rights Watch said M23 targeted the Kasika neighbourhood of Goma because of reports of activity by the Congolese army in the area.
“The M23’s brutal control over Goma has created a climate of fear among those perceived to be allied to the Congolese government", said Clémentine de Montjoye, senior Great Lakes researcher at HRW.
“The mass killings don’t seem to be actions by rogue fighters, but rather the M23 leadership’s efforts to solidify their control by whatever means necessary", she added.
The overall toll in Goma could be much higher, with over 50 bodies reported by medical workers over the two-day period.
The decades-long conflict in eastern Congo escalated in January, when M23 seized Goma, followed by Bukavu in February. The escalation has killed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee.
M23 has often been accused of targeting civilians.
Amnesty International made similar claims in a report published on 27 May. The NGO accused M23 rebels of killing, torturing and forcibly disappearing civilian detainees in Goma and Bukavu.
"These acts violate international humanitarian law (IHL) and may amount to war crimes", the NGO said.
M23 and the Congo River Alliance released a report to deny all allegations of human rights violations on 30 May.
The International Criminal Court is currently investigating alleged crimes against civilians in North Kivu.

Police Bans Sanusi, Bayero From Holding Sallah Durbar In Kano
June 3, 2025
By Oladipo Abiola
The Kano State Police Command has announced a ban on all forms of Sallah durbar activities in the state ahead of the 2025 Eid-El-Kabir celebrations.
The statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson of the Kano police command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, said the ban is a joint decision by security agencies in Kano.
Naija News reports that Haruna said the step is part of efforts to ensure peaceful celebrations and prevent a breakdown of peace and order during the Sallah festivities.
While wishing the people of the state happy celebrations, the statement warned that it would not tolerate any attempt to violate the ban.
It added that the ban is a continuation of the total ban on all forms of Durbar activities throughout the State, which was pronounced in the wake of the 2025 Eid-El-Fitr Sallah celebrations.
According to the statement, “The Kano State Police Command in collaboration with other security agencies in the State congratulates Muslim faithful and all law-abiding residents of the State ahead of the 2025 Eid-El-Kabir Sallah festivities.
“To ensure peaceful celebrations throughout the State, worshippers are enjoined to be law-abiding and conduct themselves peacefully, as adequate pre-emptive measures have been taken to guarantee peace and public safety across the state.
“It would be recalled that in the wake of 2025 Eid-El-Fitr Sallah celebrations, the Command, in collaboration with all security agencies in the state, acting on credible intelligence, pronounced total ban on all forms of Durbar activities throughout the State, as part of collective commitment to sustaining the peace and security in the state.
“The Command, therefore, reiterates that the ban on all forms of Durbar in the state is still in force and will be strictly enforced during this 2025 Eid-El-Kabir celebrations, as the threats which have been put to serious checks are still potent.
“This decision is made after consultations with relevant security stakeholders following intelligence reports indicating plans by recruited miscreants and their sponsors to use Durbar to undermine security and public order in the state, as recorded during Eid-El-Fitr Sallah.
“Therefore, all worshippers are to adhere strictly to the following security measures throughout the period: No horse/animal riding of any kind (Kilisa); No Car-racing, reckless and dangerous driving; No unlawful possession/ reckless display of firearms/weapons; and No carrying of any unnecessary/dangerous objects that may trigger suspicion or apprehension.
“Parents and guardians should therefore caution their children/wards against being used by subversive elements as the Police and other security agencies are determined and ready to enforce the law to the letter.
“Members of the public are warned to desist from any act or conduct that may likely cause breach of the peace or breakdown of law and order,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, had earlier directed District Heads to come along with their village heads, horse riders, and attires for the Sallah durbar celebration.

South Sudan celebrates International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers
June 4, 2025
The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers kicked off in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State on Monday - opening with a friendly football match between peacekeepers and local women.
The event was aimed at raising awareness of the need to de-escalate tensions and promote peace in the conflict-prone area.
James Severino is Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State:
“We have seen the presence of peacekeepers of over ten years. We worked together, we fought together, to ensure that relative peace comes to Tambura. Thank you, peacekeepers, that you managed to protect our civilians. We will stand with you to work for peace.”
Western Equatoria has been hard hit by years of military confrontations and intercommunal conflict. The peacekeepers are part of the UN Mission in South Sudan, or UNMISS, an initiative aimed at preventing the country from relapsing into civil war, and building sustainable peace so that free, fair, and credible elections can take place. More than 18,000 peacekeepers from 75 countries serve with the mission.
“We had a lot of efforts together and collaboration in Tambura, greater Tambura, in the eastern counties of the State and even here in Yambio," Emmanuel Dukundane a Civil Affairs Officer with UNMISS said during a speech at the event. "We express our commitment to continue with this partnership and collaboration to ensure that we have sustainable peace in the State.”
Lost lives
Participants also paid their respects to the peacekeepers serving with UNMISS, who lost their lives while serving the cause of peace in South Sudan over the past year.
Wakila Charles, Speaker, Western Equatoria Legislative Assembly:
“As the sacrifice, our brothers, our lovely brothers, have laid down their lives for the sake of peace. Ask yourself am I in peace in my home? As Members of Parliament, as a leader, we are representing our community. If the peace started with me, that means my home will be peaceful, my community, and the State.”

Uganda: Two suspected terrorists killed in blast near church
June 3, 2025
Uganda military authorities said two people died before executing a suspected explosive attack near a Catholic shrine in the capital, Kampala.
The military said in a statement Tuesday they “intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists” in Munyonyo, a Kampala suburb.
The deceased were a man and a woman on a passenger motorcycle. The female passenger appeared to explode as a group of security forces tracking the duo drew near the suspects, police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke said.
Rusoke did not provide more details and said an investigation is underway.
Uganda is marking a holiday Tuesday to remember a group of Christian martyrs who were killed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of a local king. The event attracts pilgrims to a different site near Kampala where dignitaries, including Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, have gathered for mass.
Explosive attacks are rare in Uganda, but authorities sometimes warn of plans by extremist militants opposed to Museveni's government.

Alaafin Is Superior To Any Other Title In Yorubaland – Oluwo Of Iwoland Declares
June 3, 2025
By Richard Ogunsile
The Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun State, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has acknowledged that the ‘Alaafin’ title is superior to any other title in Yorubaland.
This is as the monarch expressed his desire to be addressed as the “Alaafin of Iwo.”
Naija News reports that Akanbi made this statement during the courtesy visit of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, at his palace in Iwo on Tuesday.
The Oluwo, while expressing gratitude to the Alaafin for the visit, remarked that the monarch’s presence would enhance the relationship between the two towns, Oyo and Iwo.
The Oluwo maintained that he is unaware of any other title in Yorubaland that holds greater significance than the Alaafin title, characterising the Alaafin title as the highest among all traditional titles in Yorubaland.
He noted that this title was originally designated for the descendants of Oduduwa.
He said, “Henceforth, I will also want to be called Alaafin of Iwo, and we will inform the government about it.”
“I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to the Alaafin.
“Alaafin will continue to be Alaafin because that is the title that Oramiyan adopted and I will also adopt the saying.”
Akanbi further stated that due to the humility and experience of the Alaafin, Oyo is poised to experience peace and remarkable development.
He noted that the current positive relationship among the towns will persist and thrive.
Previously, Owoade, who was joined by his wife, Abiwumi, along with other chiefs, expressed that he visited the town to extend his gratitude to the Oluwo for attending his coronation ceremony in April.
The traditional ruler also mentioned that the Oluwo reached out to congratulate him upon the announcement of his name as the Alaafin-elect.
“I came to see Oluwo because he was at my coronation ceremony in April.
“Even when my name was mentioned as Alaafin-elect, Oluwo called to congratulate me.
“It is also good to come around to pay him a courtesy visit”, the Alaafin of Oyo said.
The Alaafin remarked that Oyo and Iwo have maintained a positive relationship for many years, stating that his visit to Iwo was to ensure the continuation of this relationship.
Owoade, speaking in Yoruba, mentioned that his predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, had fostered a strong relationship with Iwo, and therefore, it is essential to preserve this bond.
“Iwo and Oyo have been enjoying a good relationship for years, even with my predecessor and I want that relationship to continue,” he said.
Owoade urged other traditional rulers in Iwo to continue to work with Oluwo with an open mind.
He said they should also continue to support and cooperate with the traditional ruler for the development of the town.
It could be recalled that Owoade was crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in April 2025 as the successor to the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III.

Southwest Muslims marginalised in your appointments – Group tells Tinubu
June 3, 2025
The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of marginalising Muslims in the region in federal appointments, despite notable achievements recorded by his administration over the past two years.
In a statement jointly signed by MUSWEN President Rasaki Oladejo and Executive Secretary/CEO, Professor Musliu ‘Tayo Yahya, the group said that Yoruba Muslims have been sidelined in key national roles, and called on President Tinubu to urgently address what they described as an imbalance.
However, MUSWEN said those achievements have not translated into inclusive representation for South West Muslims.
“Regrettably, the representation of South West Muslims in key federal positions does not reflect the region’s demographic and intellectual weight,” the statement read.
MUSWEN emphasized that the current pattern of appointments does not align with the principles of equity and fairness enshrined in Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates balanced representation across all regions and groups in Nigeria.
“The Constitution enjoins the government to ensure inclusivity, yet South West Muslims have been largely ignored in this administration’s distribution of federal appointments,” the group lamented.
Calling for urgent redress, MUSWEN urged President Tinubu to adopt a more inclusive approach moving forward.
“We appeal to the President to take deliberate steps to correct this imbalance and ensure that South West Muslims are fairly represented in the governance of our nation,” the group stated.
The group reiterated its support for national progress but warned that inclusiveness is key to building a united and equitable Nigeria.

Amaechi Reveals People Who Helped Him Become Rivers Governor
June 4, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
Former Minister of Transportation and two-term Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has named those he believes were instrumental to his emergence as governor in 2007.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Amaechi, who governed the oil-rich state from 2007 to 2015, said his rise to power was made possible by the grace of God, support from his predecessor, Peter Odili, the people of Rivers State, and the intervention of the judiciary.
Before becoming governor, Amaechi served as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007.
Speaking on his political journey, he said, “I had the opportunity and I utilised the opportunity. So when the opportunity came for me to become the Speaker of the Parliament, Dr. Odili and I spoke and he felt it was important that I became the Speaker, I utilised the opportunity and I became the Speaker.
“The problem is not when you get the opportunity, the problem is what you do with the opportunity.
“God knows I was one of the best Speakers in this country at that material time. I don’t know what is happening now, maybe there are better Speakers than I was.
“But that time, nobody will deny me the fact that I performed my duty as the Speaker and I was elected to become the Chairman of the Speakers Forum. Since I left as the Chairman of the Speakers’ Forum, I wonder if the Speakers’ forum is still in existence.
“By the grace of God and by the grace of Peter Odili, the people of Rivers State and the judiciary, I became Governor because at the end of the day, the judiciary pronounced me governor.”

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with focus areas including the halal industry, Islamic finance, energy and capacity building.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had encouraged Malaysian corporations, including Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and FGV Holdings, to explore potential ventures in Guinea-Bissau.

Umno balik kampung London
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is in the UK for a working visit.
The trip is also becoming an Umno getaway of sorts, with at least 12 party leaders - including three of Zahid's aides - also in London.
However, Zahid’s political secretary Megat Zulkarnain Omardin said that those not linked to the deputy premier's office all paid for the trip out of their own pockets.
One less job for Zafrul
There has been a lot of speculation about what's in store for Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz once his final term as senator expires at the end of the year.
However, one job option is now off the table.
The government has appointed a career diplomat to become the next US ambassador.
Zafrul’s chances of becoming Selangor menteri besar is also in question, with current office holder Amirudin Shari seemingly reluctant to let go and get promoted to Putrajaya.

PM Anwar congratulates S. Korea’s new president Lee Jae-myung, seeks stronger ties
04 Jun 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as the President of South Korea.
He said that this marks a turning point for South Korea, a nation that has emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve.
“The people have spoken for renewal of trust, of institutions, and of national purpose,” he said in a Facebook post today.
“I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations: in trade and technology, in peace and security, and the enduring ties between our peoples.”
Malaysia-South Korea ties were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, a milestone reflecting both nations’ shared ambitions.
Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of Asean for 2025, hopes to see Asean play a more prominent role in South Korea’s regional outlook. South Korea currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
“As Chairs of Asean and APEC in 2025, respectively, Malaysia and South Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives.
“In a time of global flux, a deeper partnership between Southeast Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,” he said.
Anwar also wished Lee wisdom and success in the journey ahead and said he looks forward to meeting him in Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean Summit, and again in Gyeongju, South Korea, for the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting later that month.
Lee formally began his five-year term today after the National Election Commission (NEC) confirmed his election victory during a plenary session.
The liberal Democratic Party (DP) candidate won the election with 49.42 per cent of the vote, defeating his rival Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, who garnered 41.15 per cent. — Bernama

Fahmi, Azalina to collaborate on tightening social media regulation
04 Jun 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his readiness to hold further discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to strengthen the regulation of social media platforms in Malaysia.
Fahmi said the meeting is vital following Azalina’s recent proposal to amend existing laws, including requiring parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online behaviour and participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes.
He said that these measures will take into account the experience and approaches of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications in handling various issues related to digital platforms and social media in the country.
“I will be meeting Datuk Seri Azalina to explore possible ways, based on MCMC’s and the Ministry’s experience dealing with social media platforms, on what we can do,” Fahmi told reporters after the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners’ Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday.
Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Hawana 2025 project director.
Elaborating, Fahmi said that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which is set to be enforced soon, will grant MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations.
“So, we will look at the best ways to assist the Law Minister in the implementation and drafting of the legislation she mentioned,” he added. — Bernama

AGC denies Anwar’s pardon was invalid, rebuts Mahathir’s claims as misleading
04 Jun 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) yesterday denied that the pardon granted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was invalid.
In a statement, the AGC said this was because Anwar had been granted a full pardon by the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, which convened on May 16, 2018.
“The AGC affirms that the 51st Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya was held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at 11am at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
“The meeting was chaired by His Majesty the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, and was also attended, among others, by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself, who was the Prime Minister at the time,” the AGC stated.
According to the statement, based on the advice of the Pardons Board, Sultan Muhammad V consented to the granting of a full pardon to Anwar, along with his immediate release, effective from the date of the Pardons Board meeting.
The statement added that for the purpose of the meeting, the Attorney General had also provided a written opinion on the matter in accordance with Clause (9), Article 42 of the Federal Constitution for the Pardons Board’s consideration.
Therefore, the AGC refuted the remarks made by Dr Mahathir, in which the former Prime Minister publicly claimed that the pardon was invalid as it did not go through a proper Pardons Board proceeding.
In this connection, the AGC views the matter seriously as it involves constitutional and institutional interests.
“The AGC also emphasises that any statement that could mislead the public regarding the decision of the Pardons Board is completely inappropriate,” the statement said. — Bernama

Royal tour reflects concern of the royal institution for the people - Mohd Na’im
Bernama
03-06- 2025
PUTRAJAYA: The intention by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, to embark on a “Kembara Diraja” (Royal Tour) across the federal territories to meet the people and distribute zakat (tithe) reflects the love and concern of the Royal Institution for the people, especially the poor, needy and vulnerable.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said this was conveyed by Sultan Ibrahim in his Royal Address at an investiture ceremony in conjunction with His Majesty’s official birthday celebration at Istana Negara yesterday.
He expressed his gratitude for the message and pledged his full commitment to supporting and realising His Majesty’s noble wishes.
“The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) will work closely with the Prime Minister’s Department and relevant agencies, including local authorities, to implement this special programme in phases,“ Mohd Na’im said in a post on his official Facebook page today.
He said the main objective of the Royal Tour initiative is to personally deliver zakat to the poor and needy, assess the actual needs of the people through a grassroots and people-friendly approach, enhance the effectiveness of the zakat distribution system, and strengthen the bond between the Royal Institution and the rakyat.
“Indeed, the concern and compassion shown by His Majesty serve as a meaningful source of inspiration to all leaders and agencies, for them to uphold the values of compassion, social justice and the culture of giving in our society.
“Daulat Tuanku, May Allah SWT bless His Majesty’s reign, grant strength and wisdom for His Majesty to lead the nation and its people,“ he said.

TH ensures visually impaired pilgrims won’t be left behind for wukuf in Arafah
Bernama
03-06- 2025
MAKKAH: The Pilgrims Fund Board or Tabung Haji (TH) has pledged that the needs of visually impaired pilgrims will be fully supported during this year’s haj, with special attention given to enabling their participation in the key rite of wukuf in Arafah.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said 11 pilgrims with visual impairments are currently in the Holy Land for the annual pilgrimage and will be accompanied by trained support personnel to ensure they can complete the pilgrimage.
“TH staff, including sahabat maktab (pilgrim companions), are fully prepared to prioritise the needs of disabled pilgrims. This is about ensuring they too can achieve haji mabrur (a fulfilling and accepted haj),” he told reporters after a meet-and-greet event with Malaysian pilgrims here today.
In a step towards greater inclusion, the minister also launched a Braille version of the Haj and Umrah guidebook, a collaboration between TH, the Ibn Ummi Maktum Research Centre (UMMI) of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) and the Malaysian Islamic Association for the Visually Impaired (PERTIS).
“I congratulate TH on this meaningful effort, as this guidebook will benefit our visually impaired pilgrims and may inspire others still waiting for their chance to perform the haj,” he said.
He added that any additional support required by disabled pilgrims would be provided promptly to ensure smooth access to services throughout the pilgrimage.
As preparations intensify ahead of wukuf, considered the pinnacle of the haj, set to take place this Thursday (June 5), the minister urged all pilgrims to prioritise their health.
“Haj cannot be completed without wukuf in Arafah. We want no one to miss it due to illness in the final 24 hours,” he warned.
Among this year’s visually impaired pilgrims is Nai’mah Mansor, 64, a retired schoolteacher from Kuala Terengganu who lost her sight completely just two years ago.
Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in her youth and later glaucoma at 55, she became fully blind in 2023. Yet, she has since mastered Quranic Braille.
“I never missed a single day of practice, even if just for an hour. Maybe that’s why I picked it up quickly. Now I’m able to teach it to others too,” she said.

Comprehensive, people-centric facilities at heart of Kota MADANI – PM Anwar
Bernama
03-06- 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kota MADANI concept emphasises comprehensive and centralised basic facilities for the well-being of the people, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said that during the presentation of the concept today, he was informed that among the planned facilities are high-rise schools, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, and financial institutions.
“In addition, a health clinic, fire station, police station and mosque will all be developed near residential areas.
“The first phase, which involves the construction of around 3,000 housing units and a high-rise school, is expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2027,” he said in a Facebook post today.
The Prime Minister added that the design of the mosque and school would incorporate elements of local culture, in line with efforts to preserve architectural heritage.
“May all these plans proceed smoothly and be implemented in the best possible manner for the benefit of all,” he said.
