"We Will Work To End Fertiliser Jihad": Himanta Biswa Sarma

Himanta Sarma said that the use of bad fertilisers leads to adverse health effects

------

May 20, 2023

Guwahati (Assam): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, pointing out the adverse effects on health of excessive use of fertilisers, on Friday stressed the use of natural and organic farming.

Chief Minister Sarma was speaking at the inauguration of the Natural Farming Conclave at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

Addressing the event, Chief Minister Sarma said, "Last year, I and honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi had various meetings, where the PM suggested increasing organic farming in Assam. Recently we have seen in the documentary that there is so much potential in our land that if we try to use it efficiently, and then we will not need any Urea, Phosphate, Nitrogen, etc."

Today, the honourable governor of Gujarat Acharya Devvrat explained logically that natural farming is healthier than fertiliser farming, and also brings more yield to the farmers.

The Chief Minister further said that the use of bad fertilisers leads to adverse health effects on the people, and stressed natural farming.

"When we started governing Assam, we mentioned that due to the use of bad fertilisers, there is an increase of heart diseases, kidney diseases, etc. Also, during the campaign, we have mentioned earlier that we will work to remove the fertiliser jihad," he said.

The Chief Minister added, "We should use fertiliser but too much use will affect the health. If natural farming produces more within the same plot of land where crops are sowed with fertiliser, then I believe there is no alternative to natural farming."

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that schemes like Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana are serving as a great help for a state like Assam which suffers from perennial floods.

It may be noted that financial assistance to the tune of ₹ 236 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Yojana was provided to over 3 lakh farmers of the state in the last three seasons.

Kashmiri Group Stages Protest Against G20 Meet In Held Srinagar

May 21, 2023

MUZAFFARABAD: A Kashmiri outfit on Saturday organised the last of a series of rallies against Delhi’s decision to hold a meeting of the G20 tourism working group in Srinagar, capital of India-held Jammu and Kashmir, calling upon all member states to boycott the controversial moot like that of China.

The rally was held in Pallandri, district headquarters of Sudhnoti, under the aegis of Pasban-i-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir (PHJK), an organisation of post-1989 migrants from India-held Kashmir.

Participants of the rally held banners and placards inscribed with slogans against Indian machinations to mislead the international community by holding the G20 huddle in occupied Srinagar from May 22.

“India is responsible for innocent killings in occupied Kashmir; G20 member states should boycott its summit if held in disputed Kashmir,” read one banner.

The participants, who were also carrying black flags, chanted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans as they paraded from local courts to the town’s grand mosque.

PHJK chief Uzair Ahmed Ghazali said the G20 meeting, being hosted by an occupying country in an internationally acknowledged disputed territory, should be unacceptable for all the countries that believe in the sanctity of the United Nations and the resolutions passed by its Security Council.

Expressing gratitude to the People’s Republic of China, he called upon other countries to take a similar position regarding the meeting.

“The statement by the Chinese government is a true reflection of the actual position. It has touched our hearts. We are grateful to our great neighbour and friend,” Mr Ghazali said.

He announced that a grand rally would be held in Burhan Wani Chowk of Muzaffarabad on Monday to condemn Indian conspiracies and military oppression in the disputed territory.

Meanwhile, describing Beijing’s announcement of boycott of the G20 meeting and decision by Ankara and Riyadh to skip registration for it as a major breakthrough, PPP regional president Chaudhry Mohammad Yasin expressed the hope that remaining member states, including European Union, would follow suit.

Speaking at a meeting, he maintained that China had not only kept alive its exemplary friendship with Pakistan but it had also categorically declared the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Similarly, he said, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia had also proved themselves to be the leaders of the Ummah by refusing to participate in the controversial G20 meet.

“All those nations which believe in the inherent rights of oppressed people should not fall prey to India’s wiles, because their participation in G20 meeting will not only encourage India to carry on its brazen disregard of the UN Security Council resolutions and international conventions and treaties but will also render them equally responsible for the destruction of peace in the region,” he said.

Former Shabak Chief Calls Haredi, Religious, MKS 'The Jewish Jihad'

Carmi Gillon

-----

Itzik Brandwein

May 21, 2023

Former Shabak (Israel Security Agency) chief Carmi Gillon, under whose watch the agency failed to protect the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, participated Saturday evening in a leftist protest against the proposed judicial reform.

"The haredi and more Religious Zionist politicians are the Jewish jihad," Gillon was quoted by Haaretz as saying. "They are an absolute existential threat to the State of Israel."

Turning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Gillon added, "Bibi, you're over with politics. Go home with a mark of shame on your forehead, and you will be remembered forever as the prime minister who nearly succeeded in causing Israel's destruction."

On Friday, television host Galit Gutman accused the haredi community of "sucking our blood" and "milking" secular society. She later apologized for her statements, explaining that they were made in the context of a discussion on the State budget and that she had not intended to hurt the entire sector.

J&K Government’s G20 Propaganda Goes Awry, Bangladesh Road Showcased As Srinagar

The picture that was passed off as the Boulevard Road in Srinagar.

The Telegraph

------

Muzaffar Raina

21.05.23

The Jammu and Kashmir government’s propaganda blitz over a high-profile G20 meeting in Srinagar seems to have gone awry after its official handles posted a picture of a swanky Bangladesh walkway to showcase the city's development.

The picture that was widely shared by the official social media handles over the last two days suggested a “magnificent makeover” of Srinagar’s Boulevard Road.

Dozens of foreign dignitaries who are participating in the G20 meeting on tourism from May 22 to 24 are scheduled to take the Boulevard Road, which semi-circles the Dal Lake, to reach the venue at Sher e Kashmir International Convention.

Boulevard Road has been embellished in view of the G20 meeting, along with Srinagar city and some other stretches, but the controversial picture has reportedly originated from Jhautala in Bangladesh’s Patuakhali.

The image shows a walkway decorated with colourful paver blocks and illuminated by floodlights. It was shared by BJP leaders, pro-government activists and the Right-wing ecosystem to showcase Srinagar's transformation since the scrapping of the special status in 2019.

Caught on the wrong foot, Counter Disinformation Centre, a Twitter handle reportedly enjoying the official patronage, stepped in on Saturday to debunk the claims.

"A picture is being shared by some official handles, politicians and social media users with the false claim that Boulevard Road, leading to the venue for G20 Summit in Srinagar has been given a new look to welcome G20 delegates,” the centre tweeted.

"Fact: Upon @JKCDC_ research, we found that the picture is from Patukhali Bangladesh and was shared by various social media handles from Bangladesh in February,” it added.

Dozens of handles that had shared the picture to showcase Srinagar’s beauty included Information & PR, J&K and its social media accounts for Budgam, Bandipora and Kulgam districts.

"Isn't this a pleasant surprise. This Boulevard Road in Srinagar has been given a magnificent makeover to welcome delegates from across the world for the #G20Kashmir summit,” BJP’s national spokesman R.P. Singh tweeted.

Erbil archbishop: Christian community reviving after the Islamic State and the great exodus

05/20/2023

The prelate spoke about the situation in Iraq during a recent trip to the United States. Some of those who fled to Western countries are coming back, especially to Kurdistan, hoping to raise their families in a Catholic environment. Since the defeat of the Islamic State, the number of Chaldean families has doubled to 4,000 out of a total of 8,000 Christian families.

Erbil (AsiaNews) – Iraq’s Christian community is showing some signs of renaissance and hope after a steep decline that began with the US invasion of the country two decades ago, which sparked an exodus that drove most into exile.

At least, this is happening in Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, where the community is growing, this according to Archbishop Bashar Matti Warda, who heads the Eastern Catholic Archeparchy of Erbil.

The rising numbers are not only due to migration within the country, but also to Christians who had fled abroad to escape poverty, extremist violence, and the rise of the Islamic State (IS) group in the summer of 2014.

In a recent visit to the United States, the prelate spoke about the many struggles and hardships experienced by Christians and Iraqis in general, especially under the reign of terror of the Islamic caliphate.

Although not as intense, such challenges and difficulties continue even today with government corruption as the main obstacle to the country’s true revival.

In the United States, Archbishop Warda received an honorary doctorate from Walsh University, a private Roman Catholic university in North Canton (Ohio), and met with officials from various Catholic universities to discuss cooperation with the Catholic University in Erbil (CUE), which he founded after the Islamic State’s rise.

The Christian population in Iraq once exceeded a million, but has dropped to about 200,000, he told Aleteia, an online Catholic news and information website. However, some of those who fled to the countries of the diaspora, especially in the West, have chosen to return, many of them stopping in Erbil, in the north, where the situation is calmer.

Asked about the reason for their return, many say they wanted to raise their children in a truly Catholic environment, the 53-year-old Warda explained, adding also “Because we live in the safe area of Kurdistan in northern Iraq”,

Since the Islamic State’s defeat, the number of Christian families in Erbil doubled from 2,000 to 4,000. In addition, “we welcomed in the area Churches that had not been there before. So today, the Christian area of what we call Ankawa has the Assyrian Church, Syrian Catholic Eparchy, Syriac Orthodox Eparchy, Armenian Church, Latin Church, different Churches.”

The visit of Pope Francis in March 2021 also boosted the Christian presence, giving further impetus to existing projects. The archeparchy, for example, has opened a hospital and four new schools. The Syriac Orthodox Church opened its own school. In total, the city has 18 Christian educational establishments (pictured, Catholic school in Kurdistan).

Muslims like these establishments as well, and many send their children to Catholic schools because they trust them for their high quality of teaching.

After being under Islamic State rule, “everyone realized that using religion or using violence in the name of God and religion is a devastating fact and it’s going to affect all,” Archbishop Warda explained.

When the group took over, it displaced about 125,000 Christians and more than three million Sunnis and killed many Shias. So many reacted thinking, “enough [is] enough”, when it comes to “using the name of God and religion and spreading violence.”

The pontiff's visit also made it possible to speak of Iraq for something other than violence and attacks, namely a journey and an encounter based on dialogue and fraternity.

“We thank God that we passed the difficult times, but the challenges are still there, and we look on our Christian brothers and sisters [in the West] to really help us maintain this kind of help, support, solidarity so [that] we can continue.

Islam And Judaism Teach: Vicegerents Need One Another – OpEd

By Rabbi Allen S. Maller

May 21, 2023

Islam teaches that humans are vicegerents under God in managing our personal and social lives on this planet. Mankind is the vicegerent of Allah on earth. (Qur’an 2:30) The word vicegerent means to act in such a way so as  to improve the world for and on behalf of Allah, to rule people justly, to apply the laws of Allah to people, animals and even non-living things.

The Qur’an tells us that just before Allah created Adam He told all the angels: “Surely I am about to place a khilafah- vicegerent on the Earth.” (2:30) The angels reply that unlike angels, who are always busy worshipping God and thus almost unable to commit sins, humans will do all kinds of terrible evil things on earth. Allah says, “I surely know what you do not know.” (2:30)

Khilafah means succession referring to the humans who will succeed the Jinn and will be responsible for improving life on earth because they will know the names that Allah will teach them. This knowledge will enable humans to tame their own wild inclinations; and submit to the words of Allah as brought to them by their prophets.

Ali Unal, a Turkish elucidator of the Holy Qur’an, writes that: “Since the angels do not have to struggle against sins, they do not progress spiritually.” Human males and females were created by Allah to be partners and helpmates in the moral struggle that leads to spiritual progress.

As the Qur’an states:  “He is the one who created you from a single being; and from that being He created his mate, so that he might find comfort with her.” (Qur’an 4:1, 7:189, and 39:6)  The same teaching comes from the Torah of Moses, which also relates the events concerning the creation of Adam and Eve (Havvah in Hebrew, Hawwa in Arabic).

In the Jewish religious tradition the great events of the Torah are often retold and re-imagined in order to gain clearer insights for later generations. A good example of this process (called in Jewish tradition; Midrash), as applied to the archetypal humans, is this account of how and why God’s gift to Adam was Eve: At first, Adam was all alone. He didn’t have parents and he didn’t have children. He did not even have a brother, a sister or a friend  to talk to. Adam was lonely, and he was unhappy.

God said to Adam, “It is not good for you to be alone.(Genesis 2:18) But now you are free to do whatever you want to do. When you are alone you don’t have to share things with others. You don’t have to stop talking and just listen when someone else needs to talk to you. You don’t have to help when others need help. You don’t have to care about how someone else feels. If you had a sister or a brother or a good friend, you would have to do all these things and many more.”

“I don’t like being lonely” said Adam, ” I have lots of things for fun and games; but I get bored with them after a while. I have several pet animals, but even having animals is not good enough for me. I still feel lonely and all alone. I need someone who is like me but at the same time is different. I need a partner. Someone to stand by my side and be my best friend. I need someone I can take care of, and who will care for me.”

God knew just what Adam needed. “What you need is a helpmate. A person with a different personality, who can grow together with you in love, and help you become a responsible, kind and loving human being. I am going to form her right out of your side, so she will stand side by side with you as your equal partner, your help mate.(Genesis 2:21-23)

The Hebrew word for helper or help-mate is ezer. Traditional male religious scholars thought a helper was like an assistant, which would mean a lesser partner. But female scholars have pointed out that God is Himself called ezer when He comes forth in times of need to help the People of Israel. (Genesis 49:25 and Psalm 37:40)

The two of you will be like one pair of hands. You know, one hand cannot wash itself. But two hands can always wash each other. You will have to be responsible for and to each other. You will no longer be independent. You will not be free to do whatever you want anymore. You will have to think about another person’s feelings. You will have to listen to what she tells you. You will have to think less about yourself and more about another. I will give you a blessing to help you become a couple.

God looked down and saw that Adam had fallen into a deep sleep. God hoped that when Adam awoke he would remember all that God had told him. Even if Adam and all his descendants didn’t always tame their self centered inclinations, and become the loving responsible help mates that God wanted them to be, God thought they would become much better by trying.

And those who were fully responsible partners and help mates would become God’s blessing for each other. Then the sons of Adam, instead of claiming that Eve caused Adam to sin and thus introduced original sin into human life, would realize that the daughters of Eve (Havvah in Hebrew, Hawwa in Arabic) were meant to become blessings from God.

Also without Eve men’s health declines greatly. A pooled analysis of data from 34 studies published between 1963 and 2015 involving more than 2 million people aged between 42 and 77 from Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia revealed that, compared with people who were married, those who weren’t (never married, divorced, widowed) were at heightened risk of developing cardiovascular disease (42%) and coronary artery heart disease (16%).

Not being married was also associated with a heightened risk of dying from both coronary heart disease (42%) and stroke (55%). The analysis showed that divorce was associated with a 35 per cent higher risk of developing heart disease for both men and women, while widowers of both sexes were 16 per cent more likely to have a stroke. While there was no difference in the risk of death following a stroke between the married and the unmarried, this was not the case after a heart attack, the risk of which was significantly higher (42%) among those who had never married.

To sum it up: “It is better to live outside the garden with Eve than inside it without her. Blessed be the One who brought us near together and taught me to know the goodness of her heart and the sweetness of her soul!  “Wheresoever she was, there was Eden.” From Mark Twain

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray has urged that it is not right to break a century-old tradition of offering `incense` (dhoop) by Muslims at the famed Trimbakeshwar Temple, here on Saturday. "It`s a hundred-year-old custom... It`s not right to break it, the traditions should not be stopped..." urged Thackeray - the estranged cousin of former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray. Simultaneously, he issued a veiled warning that "outsiders should not interfere in this" and "it is for the local townsfolk to take a decision in the matter".

"Let the local villagers take the decision... Does anybody want riots over this? We must speak up when things go wrong," he said, arriving on a two-day visit to this town. Flaying the incident of May 13-14 night when some Muslims taking part in the annual `Urs` of Hazrat Pir Syed Gulab Shahwali Baba Dargah were prevented from offering `incense` at the temple entrance, Thackeray said that such an old ritual must not be disturbed or ended and the matter must be resolved through discussions.

He wondered what was the problem if some people were merely following the old traditions and "whether our (Hindu) religion is so weak that someone coming there would make any difference". Thackeray also pointed fingers at the social media for blowing such things out of proportion, spreading misunderstandings and said the police must ensure that there is no violence over such things.

Islamic banking needs to speed up on its digital-driven changes

George Haimar

May 20, 2023

The consumer banking industry has undergone a tremendous change, creating a major shift in how customers access financial services. A the heart of this has been the emergence of a generation of customers for whom smartphones and technology are an extension of their lifestyle through which they access every service they need.

From traditional banks building digital platforms to the rise of neo-banks, the financial sector continues to change. For newer and younger customers who are getting their first bank account, digital services will remain their default entry-point to accessing financial services.

While mainstream banking continues to forge ahead, Islamic banking lags in terms of digital adoption and market penetration. Despite being built primarily for the 2 billion global Muslim population, the $1.9 trillion Islamic banking sector has only a 6 per cent share of the global banking market.

Changing face of Arabic poetry

HAIFA ALSHAMMARI

May 20, 2023

RIYADH: Arabic poetry has a long and rich history that dates back to pre-Islamic times. Before the advent of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula, poetry played an important role in Arab society, serving as a means of communication, entertainment and cultural expression.

The early poems of the pre-Islamic era were often composed in a form known as the “Qasida,” a long poem with a fixed rhyme scheme and meter that was typically recited in public gatherings. These poems often celebrated the virtues of tribal heroes, described the beauty of the natural world, or expressed the grief and longing of a lover.

One of the well-known markets was Souq Okadh, located in Taif, on the northeast side of the city. It was one of the three major Arab markets in pre-Islamic times, in addition to the Majna market and Dhul-Majaz market.

Showing distrust of judiciary, Maryam backs military courts

Zulqernain Tahir

May 21, 2023

LAHORE: A day after former prime minister Imran Khan asserted that PTI workers cannot be tried in military courts, ruling PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz on Saturday fully supported the trial of those involved in the May 9 attacks under the Army Act.

“I fully endorse the trial of the May 9 arsonists in the military courts. Although these cases should go to the civilian courts, but they are facilitating the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders,” she said while addressing the party’s ulema wing here on Saturday.

The PML-N chief organiser said attacking the military installations was a heinous crime and punishment should also be accordingly. “Why are they objecting to military courts.... see the civilian courts are giving bails and stays to the PTI leaders. How come we trust them (civilian courts). These courts’ orders have become a joke,” she lambasted.

“On May 19 in a tweet, Imran Khan uploaded pictures of Rangers and police in front of a woman’s picture created by artificial intelligence,” she said, adding that Mr Khan and his party attempted to create a false perception that their female supporters were being targeted by law enforcers.

Mr Habib’s counsel contended that the 123 PTI workers were arrested by the police from their homes and later their detention orders were issued under Section 3(1) of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

How Israel exposed and destroyed Islamic Jihad rocket production sites in Gaza

By AMIR BOHBOT

MAY 20, 2023

As soon as the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) fired rockets from Gaza about two and a half weeks ago towards Sderot, as a sign of solidarity with the death of security prisoner Khader Adnan, the IDF's OC Southern Command Col. Liron Batito was asked to pull out the secret attack plan: "Black Cloak" - a booklet of dozens of pages that included quality targets for the attack including photos on PIJ senior officials and terrorist infrastructures.

"About a hundred rockets in the middle of the day in Sderot? The sheer scope surprised us," said an IDF senior officer, adding that "with Hamas, we were quite upset with Islamic Jihad because they did not live up to their commitment. It was clear that Israel could not be complacent and that a different kind of response was required."

The Military Intelligence Directorate stated that not only did Hamas have no part in the rocket barrages, but that the senior Hamas leaders in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif, had no intention of taking part in the escalation if it erupted, and therefore the IDF had focused only on Islamic Jihad commanders.

Israeli regime's new sacrilege of Al-Aqsa Mosque due to defeat by resistance forces: Iran

Iran Hangs 3 Men Convicted Of Killing Security Forces During Protests, Draws Flak From West

20 May 2023

Iran executed three men, convicted of killing security force members during protests triggered by Mahsa Amini's death last year, on Friday, as reported by the news agency AFP. The executions drew condemnation from Western governments. Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi, and Saeed Yaghoubi were found guilty of "moharebeh" or waging "war against God" for shooting dead three members of the security forces at a demonstration in the central city of Isfahan on November 16, the judiciary said on its Mizan Online news website.

Following the death of 22-year-old Amini, an Iranian Kurd who was arrested for an alleged breach of the Islamic Republic's strict dress rules for women, Iran witnessed waves of nationwide protests. During the protests, which Tehran labelled as foreign-instigated "riots", thousands of Iranians were arrested and hundreds killed, including dozens of security personnel. According to AFP, the hangings that took place on Friday brought the total number of Iranians executed in connection with the demonstrations to seven.

The executions also drew flak from the European Union. EU condemned the executions "in the strongest possible terms", foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement, as reported by AFP. He called on Tehran to "refrain from applying the death penalty and carrying out future executions", adding that authorities should abide by "their obligations under international law" and respect "the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly," as quoted by AFP.

Why is international community responsible to continue the flow of humanitarian assistance for the Rohingyas in Myanmar and Bangladesh?

May 21, 2023

The Rohingya crisis has all but receded into memory as far as Western financial commitments are concerned. The political process of the refugees’ repatriation back to their homeland now looks uncertain, especially with no letup in brutal crackdown on pro-democracy forces after the democratically-elected government was overthrown. With so much going on in that country in terms of turmoil and the West’s preoccupation with the war in Ukraine, the refugee crisis involving a million Rohingya people living in Bangladeshi camps seems to have taken a backstage.

Other than paying lip service about what a brilliant job Bangladesh and its government have done to save a people from deliberate persecution, the foreign powers have been depressingly stingy with their collective purses to fund this ongoing humanitarian crisis. It is now plain that funding is no longer on the priority list for the Rohingya refugees “who are almost fully dependent on food assistance”. While it may be politically expedient for Western powers to stop short of making funding available and simply sticking to diplomatic communiques about what the Bangladesh government should be doing for their healthy upkeep, it is time to set certain facts in order.

Several international organisations are working with the stranded Rohingya. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) states in a press release in March, 2023 that “cuts to the food rations received by one million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh will increase their risk of malnutrition and have a serious impact on their health.” That statement is further reinforced by MSF country representative in Bangladesh, who said that “Funding has gone down. Donors must reprioritise the Rohingya and reaffirm their funding commitments”.

Import of MMF by Bangladesh increasing amidst rising demand

20-May-2023

Import of manmade fibre (MMF) of the likes of viscose staple fibre (VSF) and polyester staple fibre (PSF) is rising in Bangladesh as more and more garment makers start making value-added apparel.

This is as per media reports, which citing data from the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), maintained between January and April of the current year, Bangladesh imported 30,653 tonnes of PSF worth around Taka 330 crore even as in last year (2022), local spinners imported 1.10 lakh tonnes of PSF at a cost of about Taka 1,243 crore while in 2021 around 1.34 lakh tonnes of PSF were imported, costing around Taka 1,280 crore.

Meanwhile, as per BTMA increased production of non-cotton apparel by the garment makers in a bid to bargain better price points and grab a bigger share of the global market (for this segment) has resulted in increased import of MMF.

Democracy is Bangladesh’s best bet

Deevakar Anand

May 20, 2023

Global attention at the national elections of a country is natural. When a city corporation election in the backyard of a South Asian country’s capital city garners international interest, it is certainly a crucial one. On 25th May, close to Bangladesh capital Dhaka, industrial hub Gazipur is going for its civic polls even as the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Japan are keeping a close attention. No less than the country’s Chief Election Commissioner himself is calling for cooperation from all stakeholders.  A successful election in Gazipur, will in many ways set the tone for General Elections slated in January next year. It will be a microcosmic test of the country’s institutional ability in holding a free, fair and peaceful elections. One would think why it is so.

Parties at loggerheads with each other is a basic element of any election anywhere in the world.  In Bangladesh though, it comes with a more fundamental fraught. The two main parties, Awami League which currently rules the country and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) have been in a constant confrontation over the very ecosystem in which elections be conducted.

General Elections in Bangladesh next year is an overwhelming priority domestically and the international community too is similarly showering deserved attention to it. The US, the UK, the EU, Japan have been consistently vocal about underlining the significance of free and fair elections in Bangladesh considering the criticality of it not just for the country but the whole region. Only last month, when US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abdul Momen at Washington, the opening statement by the former indicated the world’s concern at Bangladesh’s next election.

The ruling Awami League and the principal opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are visibly and obviously not at the same page on how to go about the next elections. BNP wants an unelected caretaker or national government under which the elections get conducted. The party along with its ideological partner Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) has been lobbying hard to have the international community by the side of its demand. However, Bangladesh and the region requires reflections on some important background and the country’s troubled track record while it has tried hard to hold on to the flag of democracy.

21 May'23

To foster entrepreneurship in the region, India reportedly plans to roll out a startup exchange programme with its neighbouring countries.

Government officials privy to the matter told the Economic Times that such an exchange framework has already been established with Bangladesh, while plans are afoot to rope in Bhutan and Nepal for such an initiative as well.

The officials said that while some exchange programmes have already been conducted with startups from Nepal and Bhutan, the new initiative has been designed to build a more structured and broader annual cohort with the two countries.

They added that the programme will boost entrepreneurial cooperation in the region. As per information available about the contours of the partnership with Bangladesh, the initiative will back exchange visits between 50 startups from India and the neighbouring nation.

From cendol to refuge in malls: Malaysians find ways to escape hot spell

By Muhammad Yusry

21 May 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — As the final bell of SK Sultan Alam Shah 2 bell rang, children could be seen rushing out through the primary school’s main gate — most of them with water bottles that were already empty.

“My mum would make sure I carry a 1.5-litre water bottle to school every day. Even though it's quite heavy to carry around, sometimes it won't be enough for me. I have to refill again in the canteen,” said Standard Four student Muhammad Khairul Amin told Malay Mail.

Illustrating his point, Malay Mail saw some parents giving out just-bought cold drinks to their children as soon as they get into their respective cars.

Report: Umno must accept state election results, whatever the outcome, says Rahman Dahlan

By Soo Wern Jun

21 May 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — The results of the coming polls involving six states must be accepted by all, especially Umno, whatever the outcome, the party’s former supreme council member Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan said.

“The gap is short, that is why we have to say it many times that this is not only the best choice for Umno for now, but also for Umno and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) survival.

“I understand it is not easy to convince the people. That’s why we need a little more time. That’s why the Unity Government National Convention was important and must not stop there. It needs to move on to the grassroots level; otherwise, this concept will not be successful, and whatever the outcome of the state polls might be, Umno must accept it,” Abdul Rahman said in an interview with Utusan Malaysia published today.

Muslim Council condemns National Conservatism conference extremism

by Agency Reporter

May 21, 2023

FOLLOWING A SPEECH by UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman at the National Conservatism Conference in London this week, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has asked if it is time for the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to examine the Conservative Party’s “persistent drive towards division and discrimination”.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) today called on the Conservative Party to take firm action against the radical right-wing extremism that is now infecting its ranks.

This manifested itself this week with the Home Secretary Suella Braverman endorsing the hard-right polemicist Douglas Murray during her speech at the National Conservativism Conference. Murray’s shocking views were on full display at the event with his statements on Germany and the two world wars, reducing the horrors of fascism and the Holocaust to a “muck up”.

Suspect Says He Set Fire to Mosque to Protest Homelessness, Affidavit Says

May 20, 2023

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA — A man charged with setting a fire at a Minnesota mosque told authorities he is Muslim and set the fire to protest homelessness, according to court records.

Said Murekezi, 42, is charged with second-degree arson, second-degree burglary of a religious building and fifth-degree drug possession in the fire Wednesday at the Oromo American Tawhid Islamic Center in St. Paul.

The arson was one of at least six acts of vandalism or arson against mosques in Minnesota this year and prompted Muslim and government officials to call for the state's residents to stand in unity with Muslims.

A probable cause statement said Murezeki was released from jail 36 hours before the fire. Court records show he has several past convictions, including one for arson at the Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul in 2020. He has also undergone several mental health evaluations.

Coalition of N.J. mayors demand apology after Muslim politician uninvited to White House

By Jackie Roman

May. 20, 2023

A coalition of more than 20 mayors from across New Jersey have signed a letter demanding the White House apologize for denying the state’s longest-serving Muslin mayor entry to a White House celebration and disband the discriminatory watch list that allegedly caused his exclusion.

The letter was presented during a press conference held Friday night in Teaneck with over 70 community members, including mayors and council people from throughout the state, who voiced support for Mayor Mohamed Khairullah of Prospect Park.

“As mayors who value transparency and the U.S. legal system of due process, we urge you to provide Mayor Khairullah with substantive reasons as to why he was denied admission. We also ask you to issue a formal apology to Mayor Khairullah, initiate a review of his status on the watchlist, and to extend another invitation to him to meet with President (Joseph) Biden to proudly represent his constituents,” the letter reads.

“Finally, we urge the Biden Administration to disband the unjust watchlist once and for all as it unfairly profiles, mistreats, and discriminates against 1.5 million people,” the demands conclude.

Why popular Muslim figures facing serious allegations escape accountability

By Zainab Iqbal

20 May 2023

When Yasmin was younger, her Quran teacher inappropriately touched her. Every time she made a mistake in her recitation, he would slap her on one of the most sensitive spots of her body.

She kept quiet and eventually grew up and no longer needed to be taught by a Quran teacher. But her experiences from that class never left her. It didn't help that she stayed in that same community. It didn't help that her Quran teacher became an imam of the local mosque in Chicago. And it didn't help that she felt that she could tell nobody.

Six years ago, in New York, where she now lives with her husband and three children, her mom called her. It was a routine call until her mom said something that caught her off guard.

"It was the same man. Apparently, a few women spoke out in the community about what he had done to them when they were young," Yasmin said. The women are around 35 now, which makes them Yasmin's age.

Yasmin didn't know those women, but she knew they were telling the truth. Because the man who was supposed to watch over them did the same to her.

"Democracies can deliver...": Biden on strengthening low-middle-income countries at G7 Summit

May 21, 2023

HIROSHIMA: United States President Joe Biden, on Saturday, said that all democratic nations can deliver opportunities and prosperity to strengthen infrastructure in low-middle-income countries.

Addressing the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, Biden said, "During the G7 meeting, we're addressing a range of issues, climate change, food security, gender inequality, economic resilience, digital connectivity and global security. We're tracking these challenges together and I think we're beginning to make some important progress."

"But if we don't move to do more to strengthen infrastructure in low-middle-income countries to help nations deliver opportunities and prosperity for their people, our impact is going to be limited. That's how critical this partnership is, that's how important our investments are," he added.

The US President said that all developing nations need to find ways to maximize their investment. He further stated that they need to maximise because it will do a lot, not only for that particular undertaking, but it has an impact across the entire region. Maximising the investment will also unlock even more public and private capital.

Biden aims to reassure world on US debt standoff as he consults with Indo-Pacific leaders

By JOSH BOAK

May 21, 2023

HIROSHIMA: President Joe Biden tried to reassure world leaders on Saturday that the United States would not default as he consulted with the heads of Australia, Japan and India in a meeting of the so-called Quad partnership that had been hastily rescheduled because of the debt limit standoff back in Washington.

Hoping to avert an outcome that would rattle the global economy and prove to be a boon to Beijing, Biden opened his third day in Japan at the annual Group of Seven meeting of the world's most powerful democracies with a briefing from his staff on the latest fits and starts in talks over how to raise the federal debt limit.

The president also squeezed in meetings aimed at challenging China's buildout across the Indo-Pacific. The Quad members originally had planned to meet in Sydney next week, but got together instead on the sidelines of the G7 so Biden could return to Washington earlier on Sunday in hopes of finalizing a deal to increase the U.S. borrowing limit before the government runs out of cash to pay its bills.

"The first meetings weren't all that progressive, the second ones were, the third one was," he said before a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. "And then, what happens is the carriers go back to the principals and say, 'This is what we're thinking about.' And then people put down new claims. I still believe we'll be able to avoid a default and we'll get something decent done."

Muslims in Ondo protest marginalisation under Akeredolu’s Government

By Seye Olumide

21 May 2023

A dangerous trend is gradually brewing in Ondo State, which might escalate into religious face off between the Christian and Muslim faithful under the Governor Rotimi Akeredolu-led government of All Progressives Congress (APC), unless concerned stakeholders address the issue on time.

While it looks as if both sides are waiting for the inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Ahmed before they perfect their game from what The Guardian gathered, some observers described the development as ‘a storm in a tea cup’ that will subside immediately after the incoming government might have finalised its appointments.

A group, under the aegis of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Ondo State Area unit, recently raised an alarm that is spurring the Muslims into a sort of rebellion against the incumbent governor.

In an open letter to the governor, President of the Muslim group, Engr. Olaleye Sulaimon, said Akeredolu’s political appointments are skewed and it precipitated injustice and unprecedented inequality against Muslims in the state.

Although the group commended Akeredolu’s brilliant outing in the last general election, which it described as unprecedented. The group however said it was surprised that the Ondo State governor came out boldly to challenge the zoning formula of the ruling party in regards to the elections of principal officers of the National Assembly.

The group said, “You did not mince words when you described the zoning formula as a “skewed arrangement that reinforces Injustice and enhances inequality. You believe that the content, intention and motives of the zoning formula represent early signs of steps aimed at attempting to cabin the hard-earned Presidency” of Bola Ahmed Tinubu by a few individuals with eyes on Aso-Rock Power Button.”

Tinubu’s Cabinet: Muslims lobby president-elect for more ministers than Christians

May 21, 2023

By Dickson Omobola

There are six states in each of the six geo-political zones viz South-South, South-West, North-Central, North-East and North-West.

The 1999 Constitution (as amended) provides that each of the 36 states of the federation must have one native in the federal cabinet.

Section 6, Part 1, Section 147 of the Constitution, titled, ‘Ministers of Federal Government’, says specifically: “3 – Any appointment under Subsection 2 by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of Section 14 (3) of this Constitution: provided that in giving effect to the provisions aforesaid the President shall appoint at least one Minister from each state who shall be an indigene of such state”.

The implication of the Muslims’ lobby is that any geo-political zone where people of their own faith are in the majority, Muslims should have four Ministers in the Tinubu cabinet while Christians should be contented with two.

The lobby is coming on the heels of the controversy generated by the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which won the February 25, 2023 election.

Those in favour of the ticket had said what was important was the competence of the presidential candidate and his running mate while those in opposition said the development would embolden Muslim hardliners to try to Islamize the country.

Sudan: RSF targets Islamists tied to former regime with wave of arrests in Khartoum

Abdelhameed Awad

20 May, 2023

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have launched a campaign of arrests across Khartoum targeting civilians linked to the former regime of ousted ex-president Omar Bashir, as well as supporters of the army, retired officers, and Islamist leaders.

The latest arrest was of Mohamed Ali al-Jazouli, chair of the Broad Islamic Current coalition, an alliance of several Islamist parties with links to the former regime.

According to al-Jazouli's office, four RSF military jeeps suddenly arrived at al-Jazouli's residence in Khartoum on Wednesday. RSF fighters then threatened to strike the building, forcing him to come out of his house, at which point he was arrested alongside four of his relatives.
