DHAKA: Twenty foreigners were brutally hacked to death by terrorists inside a restaurant popular with expatriates here in the high-security diplomatic zone before commandos launched an assault on Saturday killing six attackers and capturing one alive, ending Bangladesh's worst terror attack.
Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury, the director of military operations, said the militants slaughtered 20 hostages before the joint operation led by the armed forces began. Most of those killed were found with their throat slit, he added.
"Army Para commando Unit-1 led the operation and killed six terrorists within 13 minutes," Chowdhury told reporters.
The mission codenamed 'Operation Thunderbolt' was launched after the Prime Minister ordered the army to intervene to end the hostage crisis, he said.
All 20 hostages killed were foreigners , with most being Italian or Japanese. Two senior police officers were also killed in the gunbattle that began last night.
He said the bodies of the victims were recovered during a search in the Holey Artisan Bakery compound after the operation. The bodies were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital morgue for autopsy to confirm their identity.
Gunshots and sounds of explosion rocked the area at 7:40am (local time) as security forces launched the final assault to end the siege.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the end of siege and said security forces "successfully" wrapped up their operation, freeing 13 hostages after killing six terrorists and capturing one militant at the Spanish cafe.
"It was an extremely heinous act. What kind of Muslims are these people? They don't have any religion," she said in a televised speech, referring to the terrorists.
"They (gunmen) defied the call of Ramadan's tarabi (special evening) prayers and went to kill people...The way they killed people is intolerable. They don't have any religion...terrorism is their religion," said Hasina, with Army chief General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq by her side.
"I thank Allah as we could destroy the terrorists and rescue the hostages," Hasina said, adding that "none of the terrorists could flee the scene, six of them were killed on the spot and one was captured alive."
Hasina vowed to do everything to "uproot the militants and violent extremists" from Bangladesh.
Among those rescued were Indian, Sri Lankan and Japanese nationals, media reports said.
Hasina said around 30 people were injured in the attack.
ISIS claims responsibility
Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq news agency, nearly four hours after the hostage crisis unfolded, according to the US-based SITE Intelligence group, which monitors jihadist activity online.
It later issued a number of photographs of what it said were scenes from inside the restaurant. The pictures showed what appeared to be a number of bodies lying in pools of blood.
Amaq claimed that 24 people had been killed in the attack carried out by what it described as "ISIS commandos".
Heavy firing and explosions
Heavy firing and explosions continued at least for an hour after the 'Operation Thunderbolt' began on Saturday morning. A resident of a building, just 50 yards from the scene, reported spotting snipers firing from their guns.
The military-led rescue operation on Saturday was launched jointly by a navy commando squad, paramilitary BGB, elite anti-crime RAB along with special police units.
Shots were also fired from armoured personnel carriers (APCs). Grenades were also apparently exploded. Later, the APCs broke through the walls and entered the restaurant premises.
After hours of quiet at the Holey Artisan Bakery where terrorists were holding hostages, a fresh round of heavy gunfire rang out in the morning.
Army men in armoured personnel carriers (APCs) had moved in with commandos. Over 1,000 rounds of gunshots were fired and almost 100 blasts were heard in the first half an hour of the raid, media reports said.
Terrorists chanted 'Allahu Akbar'
On Friday night, terrorists shouting "Allahu Akbar" barged into the cafe, frequented by diplomats and expatriates, and opened indiscriminate fire at around 9:20pm (local time).
Police said the two officers died at a hospital after being wounded in the initial gunfire on Friday night. Ten of 26 people who were wounded when the militants opened fire were in critical condition, and six were on life support, according to hospital staff. The injuries ranged from broken bones to gunshot wounds. Only one civilian was among the wounded.
The deceased policemen have been identified as officer in charge of nearby Banani police station, Salahuddin Ahmed and additional commissioner of police Rabiul.
An Argentine national and a local escaped after taking refuge in a nearby house when the gunmen entered the restaurant.
Police said they have detained two employees of the eatery for questioning.
Spate of murders
The hostage crisis marks an escalation from a recent spate of murders claimed by Islamic State and al-Qaida on liberals, gays, foreigners and religious minorities, and could deal a major blow to the country's vital $25 billion garment sector.
A Hindu priest and a Buddhist leader were brutally hacked to death by machete-wielding ISIS militants in the last two days while another Hindu man survived a bid on his life.
The restaurant assault also comes after Bangladesh hanged an Islamist party leader, Motiur Rahman Nizami, on May 11 for genocide and other crimes committed during a 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. That has drawn an angry reaction and some scattered violence from supporters. Nizami, 73, was a former legislator and minister during opposition leader Khaleda Zia's last term as prime minister.

A muezzin's call to prayer reverberated inside the 6th century Istanbul landmark Hagia Sophia for the first time in 85 years on July 1.
The building in the city's historic Sultanahmet district broadcast the azan from its minarets following July 1's Laylat al-Qadr, or night of power, marking the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.
The broadcast of the morning call to prayer from within Hagia Sophia is likely to reignite the controversy over the use of the building, which was designated a museum in 1935 under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkisjh Republic.
Although the prayer call has been played from Hagia Sophia's minarets for the last four years, the muezzin has always chanted from a prayer room in the museum grounds rather than from inside the former mosque and cathedral.
Built as an Orthodox Christian basilica during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 537, the famous domed structure, known as Ayasofya in Turkish, was converted to a mosque following Sultan Mehmet II's conquest of the city in 1453.
In recent years there have been calls to return the building to Muslim worship. Last month, the Greek government complained about the reciting of the Quran in Hagia Sophia during Ramadan -- criticism the Turkish Foreign Ministry described as “unacceptable.”
The azan call was televised in a July 2 program featuring Mehmet Görmez, the head of the Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet).
Görmez used his appearance to describe the terrorist attack on Istanbul's Ataturk airport, in which 44 people were killed, as part of a “war waged on Islam.”
He argued Islam was among the victims of terrorism.
“The slaughtered ones are not only our lives but also the highest values that have been brought to humanity by Islam,” he said.

Pakistan Senate seeks abolition of Islamic council

The Senate committee’s recommendations follow the recent scandalous suggestions made by the council.
The Pakistan Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights has sought the dissolution of the constitutionally crafted Council of Islamic Ideology (CCI) on the grounds that several of its actions were inimical to the interests of women.
The Senate committee’s recommendations follow the recent scandalous suggestions made by the council, including an approval of “light beating of the errant wives by their husbands”.
It is not the first time the Council has provoked anger among civil and human rights activists, thanks to its penchant to make recommendations (though not mandatory) which adversely impact the women as well as the minorities in Pakistan.
Some of its rulings are that DNA tests were not acceptable as primary evidence in rape cases and a model bill prohibiting mixing of genders in schools, hospitals and offices. While the Council has been proactive in taking cognisance of complaints under the dreaded blasphemy law , it has refused to entertain pleas for measures to punish those who file false complaints under the law.
Constitutional body
It is a constitutional body, founded during the regime of another military ruler Ayub Khan in 1962, mandated with responsibility for giving legal advice on Islamic issues to the government and the Parliament.
Arguing in favour of its abolition, the Pakistan Senate committee has observed the Council is no longer constitutionally bound to send reports to Parliament for legislation — its final report was filed in 1997.
It also suggested the Council’s Rs100 million annual allocation be redirected to the National Commission for the Status of Women.
Taking note of the Senate Committee recommendation, the Pakistan English daily Dawn, in an editorial on Friday, noted: “Although it is known to flood the airwaves with distorted interpretations of religious and cultural norms, the CII’s recommendations are not constitutionally binding. In a democratic polity, legislators must ensure laws impacting women are passed through parliamentary consensus.

ISIL's Top Head-Chopper Killed in Clashes with Iraqi Army near Mosul

TEHRAN (FNA)- A Kurdish commander of the ISIL terrorist group, notorious for his rapid beheading of people, was killed in a small town on the Southern side of Mosul, security sources announced Saturday.
"Senior commander of the ISIL known as Abu Ayesha Kurdi was killed while carrying out a suicide attack on the Iraqi forces' positions in Western side of Makhmour," the sources said.
Abu Ayesha Kurdi is the one who spoke in a video in two languages of Arabic and Kurdi while beheading three Pishmarga fighters in March.

Syrian warplane crashes near Damascus, rebels seize pilot

BEIRUT: A Syrian warplane crashed northeast of Damascus on Friday and its pilot was captured by rebels in the area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Syrian state media said the crash was caused by a technical fault and a search was under way for the pilot, who had ejected.

RIYADH: Eighteen pilgrims have been injured in a stampede near Makkah, Saudi media reported on Saturday, as the kingdom continues to review safety after a deadly crush during last year's Haj.
The incident happened on Friday night near the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Al-Riyadh newspaper said, as people gathered in large numbers to mark the Laylat al-Qadr, one of the high points of the holy fasting month of Ramazan.

The Syrian soldiers stormed al-Nusra bases in Southern side of Zonoubia school and meantime destroyed the positions of the Takfiri terrorists in Eastern side of al-Tamriz school in Dara'a al-Mahatta, which ended in the killing and wounding of tens of the militants.

Syrian Analyst: Terrorists' Heavy Invasion of Northern Lattakia Plotted by Turkey

TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Syrian analyst underlined that the terrorist groups' new heavy aggression on the Northern parts of Lattakia province is a plot hatched by Turkey to weaken the Syrian army and popular forces in Aleppo battle.
"The terrorists' attacks on Lattakia province is a plot hatched by Turkey's operation room to open marginal battlegrounds and make the highest number of Syrian army forces engaged in other things than the big battle in Aleppo," Akhil Aid told FNA on Saturday.
He, meantime, said that the Syrian army and its allies have made good advance in the Northern parts of Lattakia and have driven out the remaining terrorists towards the Syrian borders.

Gaza rockets hit Israeli city, militants behind the attack
July 2, 2016
Palestinian militants fired a rocket from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, causing material damage but no injuries, the army said.
“A rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip at southern Israel and hit in the city of Sderot, causing damage to a building,” a statement from the military read. “No injuries have been reported.”
Israeli media said the rocket had hit a kindergarten.

Man beaten up after threatening to detonate self in mosque in Turkey’s south

A man was beaten up by the congregation of a central mosque on July 1 in the southern province of Adana after he shouted that he was about to detonate himself.
The man, identified by the police as 33-year-old Mahmut Kılıçarslan from Diyarbakır, stood up during Friday prayers in the Sabancı Merkez Mosque and began to run toward the imam. According to reports, he grabbed the microphone and shouted “I will blow myself up.”
The congregation subsequently intervened against Kılıçarslan and beat him up. Police officers attending the Friday prayers stopped the group from lynching the suspect by using tear gas and detained him.

11 foreign ISIL suspects detained in Istanbul after airport attack
A total of 11 suspected foreign militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were detained in Istanbul early on July 1 in connection with a suicide bomb attack on the city’s main airport, daily Habertürk has reported.
Istanbul counterterrorism police carried out an operation against an ISIL cell in the Başakşehir district on suspicion that they are linked to the three suicide bombers who staged the deadly attack at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport on June 28.
Eleven suspects, including some of Russian nationality who were staying in the city, were apprehended in the operation as the total number of detained suspects in the attack increased to 24.

ISIL behind Istanbul airport attack and ‘belong in hell,’ says Erdoğan

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) was “most probably” behind the triple suicide attack at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport that killed 44 people, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, adding that they “belong in hell.”
“You see what happened at the airport, and it was most probably Deash,” Erdoğan said on July 1 at a ceremony in Istanbul, using an alternate name for ISIL.
“They say they are doing this in the name of Islam,” he added. “They have nothing to do with Islam. They belong in hell. Whoever kills a soul, it is as if he has killed all of humanity. The victims are sinless, children, women, the elderly… They are traveling, unaware of what’s going on, and face death. No one has the right to do that.”

Two ISIL attackers’ identities confirmed

Istanbul police identified on June 1 two of the suicide bombers of the Istanbul Atatürk Airport attack as Russain passport holders Rakim Bulgarov and Vadim Osmanov. Work is ongoing to identify the third bomber.
Police said that before the attack was carried out the assailants threw away their laptop, which contained key organizational information, after damaging its hard disk.
According to reports, Osman was the attacker who rented the cell house in Fatih while police found a copy of his passport through the apartment’s realtor.
Meanwhile, a total of 11 suspected foreign militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were detained in Istanbul early on July 1 in connection with the deadly suicide attack on the city’s main airport, daily Habertürk has reported.

Turkey’s aid ship sets sail for Gaza

A Turkish humanitarian aid ship carrying 11,000 tons of relief supplies to the Gaza Strip set sail from the country’s southern port of Mersin on July 1.
The aid operation to be carried out by the Panama-flagged ship Lady Leyla, which has been loaded with relief supplies including rice, flour, and toys since June 29, came in the wake of a reconciliation deal reached between Turkey and Israel after a six-year hiatus.
Lady Leyla will also carry 10,000 toys and 10,000 packages of food and aid to children in Gaza via the Israeli port of Ashdod, which it is expected to reach within 30 hours.
Five tons of flour and 2,000 tons of rice aid from the Turkish Grain Board, as well as sugar aid from the Turkish Red Crescent, will be delivered.

Bangladesh's worst terror attack ends: 20 foreigners hacked to death

DHAKA: Twenty foreigners were brutally hacked to death by terrorists inside a restaurant popular with expatriates here in the high-security diplomatic zone before commandos launched an assault on Saturday killing six attackers and capturing one alive, ending Bangladesh's worst terror attack.
Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury, the director of military operations, said the militants slaughtered 20 hostages before the joint operation led by the armed forces began. Most of those killed were found with their throat slit, he added.
"Army Para commando Unit-1 led the operation and killed six terrorists within 13 minutes," Chowdhury told reporters.

Over 200 ISIS loyalists killed in Nangarhar raids, officials say

Over 200 loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group were killed during the operations launched nearly a week ago, local officials said.

Kabul suicide attacks toll rises to 33 dead, 80 wounded

The casualties toll of the back to back suicide attacks in Kabul has increased with the Ministry of Interior (MoI) saying at least 33 people were killed.
According to a statement by MoI, at least 32 police cadets and one civilian lost their lives while 79 police cadets were wounded along with a civilian.
MoI further added that the attack was carried out by two suicide bombers as one of them detonated his explosives near the convoy of the vehicles and the second bomber rammed a Vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device (IED) into the same convoy, minutes after the first blast.

Gunmen have stormed a restaurant in the diplomatic quarter of Dhaka, taking hostages while engaging security forces in a gunbattle that has left two officers dead, authorities say. Some people in the restaurant managed to run to the rooftop and escape, but one witness says about 35 people are still trapped inside, including some foreigners.

Another Hindu priest stabbed, critically wounded in Bangladesh

Unidentified attackers stabbed and critically wounded a Hindu priest in southwest Bangladesh Saturday, just a day after a Hindu temple worker was hacked to death in an attack by suspected Islamist militants.
Police said 48-year-old priest Bhabasindhu Roy of the Sri Sri Radha Gobinda Temple in Satkhira district was attacked inside the temple compound as he slept.
“They stabbed him in his chest and back. His condition is critical and we’re trying to send him to a hospital in Dhaka,” deputy chief of Satkhira police Atqul Haq told AFP.
He said it bore the hallmarks of recent attacks on minorities by suspected Islamist militants.

Islamic State posts photos it says are of foreigners killed in Dhaka attack

Islamic State posted photos on Saturday it claimed to be of foreigners killed in an attack on a cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where gunmen were holding hostages as police laid siege to the building, the group’s news agency Amaq said.
Hours into the standoff, in which Bangladeshi officials said two police officers were killed, the Islamic State issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.
“Islamic State commandos attack a restaurant frequented by foreigners in the city of Dhaka in Bangladesh,” reported Amaq, an information outlet linked to the Islamic State.
The group claims to still be holding a number of hostages inside the cafe.

DHAKA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday that 13 hostages were rescued from a besieged cafe in Dhaka on Saturday, but some had been killed.
Hasina said six gunmen had also been killed and one had been captured alive in a dawn raid on the cafe by Bangladeshi commandos.
"Because of the effort of the joint force, the terrorists could not flee," Hasina said in a nationally televised speech, vowing to fight militant attacks in the country.
"It was an extremely heinous act. What kind of Muslims are these people? They don't have any religion, their only religion is terrorism," Hasina said in a televised speech.

Dhaka cafe attackers spared hostages who could recite Quran

DHAKA: Militants who stormed into a Bangladesh cafe overnight had asked the hostages to recite verses from the Holy Quran and those who failed to do so were tortured.
Rezaul Karim, father of Hasnat Karim who was held hostage inside Holey Artisan Bakery in the diplomatic zone for over 10 hours, told The Daily Star that the hostages who could recite a verse or two from the Quran were spared, while others were tortured.
Hasnat Karim went to a birthday celebration with his wife and children at the Spanish restaurant on Dhaka’s Gulshan Road on Friday when militants stormed in and took about 20 people including foreigners as hostage.

Jalalabad suicide bomber escaped several gunshots before blast (video)

A video of the suicide attack in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province has emerged online which purportedly shows the suicide bomber escaping several gunshots before detonating his explosives.
The video which has reportedly been released by the security institutions after it was captured in CCTV camera, shows a man standing in a roundabout type area as he waits for his target to arrive.

Militants kill 7 of a family including 3 women in Kandahar province

The anti-government armed militants have killed at least seven of a family in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan, local officials said.
The incident took place late on Friday night in Shahwali Kot district after the gunmen stormed a residential house.
Provincial governor’s spokesman Samim Khpolwak confirmed that seven of a family including three women were killed in the attack.

Taliban chief talks about reforms including women’s rights in his Eid message

The newly-appointed supreme leader of the Taliban group Mawlavi Haibatullah Akhundzada has promised to bring reforms under his leadership including the women’s rights.
Akhundzada made the commitment in his message released on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr, saying “I will try for better reform of courts and efficient conduct of affairs, including release of the prisoners, treatment of the injured, the rights of the women as per Sharia, to help orphans and miserable people, education and moral training of the emerging generation, and procurement of equipment for endeverouring Mujahideen.”
The latest commitment by Akhundzada vowing reforms in women’s rights comes as the Afghan women suffered the most during the rule of the Taliban regime.

IMF clears payment of $500 million to Pakistan

WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund cleared payment of $501 million for Pakistan taking the total amount given to the country to $6.1 billion in the last few years.
In a statement, issued after the conclusion of 11th review of Pakistan's economic performance under a three-year program supported by an Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement, the IMF said the decision enables the immediate disbursement of about $501 million to Pakistan.

Mumbai attack trial: Pakistan demands more evidence from India

US designates al-Qaida in Indian Subcontinent as terror group

WASHINGTON: The US on Thursday designated al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), a regional branch of the global terror network, as a "foreign terrorist organisation" and added its chief Asim Umar on the list of global terrorist.
The announcement by the State Department prohibits US citizens to engage in transactions with AQIS and Umar and the freezing of all of their property and interests in the US.
In addition, the consequences of AQIS' FTO designation include a prohibition against knowingly providing, or attempting or conspiring to provide, material support or resources to the organization.

Nearly 116 civilians killed in US air and drone strikes

Up to 116 civilians were killed in controversial drone and air strikes by the US outside conflict zones like Afghanistan and Iraq from 2009 to 2015, intelligence officials have announced in a long-awaited report.
According to figures released by Director of National Intelligence, an estimated 2372 to 2581 militants were killed in 473 drone strikes during the same period.

US aware of KP’s donation to Darul Uloom Haqqania

Amnesty International documents ‘horrifying’ abuse of migrants in Libya

CAIRO: An international rights group on Friday published "horrifying" accounts by migrants of exploitation and sexual abuse in Libya, including Christians who were abducted by Islamic State jihadists and forced into sexual slavery.
In a report titled "Libya is full of cruelty", Amnesty International collected the testimonies of 90 migrants, including 15 women, interviewed in reception centers in Italy and Sicily after escaping Libya in recent months. The group said that sexual abuse is so widespread that some women take contraceptives before their sea crossing.

Nearly 2.3 million Britons regret voting for Brexit: Survey

LONDON: Nearly 2.3 million people in the UK regret voting for Britain's exit (popularly called Brexit) from the European Union or EU in last week's historic referendum, a trend which has come to be referred to as "Bregret", a new survey said today.
According to the "Opinium survey", seven per cent of the people who voted to leave the EU now regretted their choice and may vote for remain instead if they had a choice.
When the survey's findings are projected on to the statistics of the June 23 referendum, it cuts the Leave vote-share by 2.3 million, wiping out its majority and reversing the shock result in favour of Brexit, the survey said.
