There was a long period in human history when most achievements in progress, civilization, and social development were credited mainly to men, while the role of women was either ignored or kept in the background. However, with the advent of Islam, this one-sided view changed completely. Islam recognized both men and women as equal and honourable members of the same human family and included the abilities of both in the process of progress. The respect, status, and rights that Islam gave to women have no clear parallel in ancient history. Islam did not just grant rights to women; it also recognized them as complete human beings equal to men and enabled them to play an active role in building and reforming society.

Sadly, over time, many of the rights that Islam gave to women have been forgotten. The main reasons for this situation include lack of education, lack of awareness, and an imbalanced concept of male dominance in some societies. As a result, women are often deprived of their true status and position.
In reality, whether a woman is a mother, sister, wife, or daughter, she is a precious gift of nature in every form. Without her, the beauty of human life fades. Allah has made men protectors and supporters, while women are a source of love, care, upbringing, and strength. A woman is like a strong tree that faces all the ups and downs of life with courage. Because of this strength and determination, Islam has placed Paradise under her feet. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Paradise lies under the feet of mothers. This clearly shows that when a woman fulfils her role properly, she not only succeeds herself but also becomes a source of success for others.
Before Islam, women were deprived of even basic human rights. They had no share in inheritance, their opinions were not valued, and in some societies, they were even buried alive. Islam ended this dark period and granted women fundamental rights such as inheritance, consent in marriage, education, and dignity. The Qur’an clearly states that women have rights similar to those of men, proving that Islam recognizes women as complete human beings.
Islamic history is full of great women who set shining examples through their character, knowledge, and sacrifices. Hazrat Khadijah (RA) was the first to accept Islam and dedicated her entire life to it. She supported the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the most difficult times and made great sacrifices. Similarly, Hazrat Aisha (RA) was a great source of knowledge and wisdom. She taught many companions and played a major role in spreading Islamic teachings. Hazrat Fatimah (RA) is a perfect example of patience, modesty, and strength, and her life remains a model for women.
Other great women like Hazrat Hajra, Hazrat Asiya, Hazrat Maryam, Hazrat Sumayyah, Hazrat Umm Ammarah, and Hazrat Safiyyah also prove that a woman, with faith and determination, can change the course of history. The act of Hazrat Hajra running between Safa and Marwah has been made an act of worship forever, showing the importance Islam gives to a woman’s effort and struggle.
In the field of education, the role of women is very important and fundamental. A mother’s lap is the first school of a child, where the foundation of personality is built. An educated and well-mannered mother not only raises her children well but also helps in building a better society. That is why it is said that educating a man educates an individual, but educating a woman educates a whole family. As teachers and mentors, women pass on not only knowledge but also values, culture, and a sense of responsibility to the next generation.
Women also play a key role in the reform and betterment of society. Since the basic unit of society is the home, and the home revolves around women, social reform begins with them. If the home environment is clean, cultured, and based on good values, society naturally improves. Through their character, patience, and wisdom, women not only keep families united but also help eliminate social evils.
In today’s world, women face many challenges, including gender discrimination, economic exploitation, and sometimes even systemic injustice. Many women are still deprived of basic rights, which is a serious social issue. Along with this, materialism and moral decline have also affected society. The solution to these problems lies in education, awareness, and following Islamic values.
An ideal woman is one who is enriched with faith, knowledge, patience, modesty, and a sense of responsibility. She not only makes her home a peaceful place but also becomes a source of positive change in society. If a woman recognizes her abilities and uses them in the right way, she can build a successful society.
In conclusion, a woman is not just an individual but a complete institution. Her upbringing, education, and character shape the destiny of society. If a woman improves, generations improve; if she neglects her role, society declines. Therefore, it is essential to provide women with education, respect, and opportunities so that they can become ideal role models and contribute fully to the development of society.
