The Role of Islamic Heritage in Contemporary Intellectual Discourse

By Dr. Zafar Darik Qasmi, New Age Islam

10 October 2025

Abstract:

Islamic heritage is a living source of wisdom that connects faith, reason, and humanity. It teaches balance, justice, and peace for all people. The article explains that Islamic literature must respond to modern challenges through constructive ideas and honest scholarship. Muslim writers and thinkers should present Islam as a universal, humane, and rational religion that promotes tolerance, harmony, and coexistence. The spirit of ijtihad (intellectual reasoning) and tajdid (renewal) should be revived to meet new global realities. True Islamic thought encourages knowledge, dialogue, and moral strength — guiding humanity towards justice, equality, and peace in today’s complex world.

Main Points:

1.    Islamic heritage unites faith and reason.

2.    Modern Islamic literature must address contemporary needs.

3.    Islam promotes justice, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.

4.    Ijtihad and tajdid are essential for intellectual renewal.

5.    Islamic principles can guide the world toward harmony and moral progress.

The history of the rise and fall of nations is very old. Evidence and facts clearly show that only those nations and societies continue to live and progress whose achievements are positive, constructive, and devoted to the welfare and well-being of humanity. Societies that keep pace with modern demands, adapt their research and creativity to contemporary styles, and promote their religious and cultural heritage in line with the spirit of the times — such societies remain alive, and the literature they produce is held in great esteem.

Such literature naturally attracts readers; it appeals to the mind and touches the heart. Today, the most important question before us is: what should be the proper method and approach for compiling and presenting Islamic literature?

Although there are countless works written in every field of Islamic studies — on the Qur’an, Hadith, Seerah, Fiqh, Islamic history, and Muslim civilization — and each has its own significance and value, we must ask ourselves: does the existing Islamic literature truly meet the demands and needs of our present age?

Our religious and intellectual heritage is filled with countless proofs and arguments that can play a highly positive role in addressing modern challenges. Therefore, it has become essential to discuss issues and topics that can cover the complete range of contemporary needs and guide the new generation in the right direction.

Sadly, today we ourselves have blurred our own history, civilization, and luminous traditions. When we analyse much of today’s Islamic writings, we find that Islam — which is in reality a universal and all-embracing religion — is sometimes presented as something confined to a narrow framework. Similarly, many books on Seerah and Islamic history give the impression that Islam only came to wage wars.

The truth is that such portrayals create a negative image of Islam at the global level and promote misunderstanding. We must protect ourselves from such tendencies. Muslim authors, researchers, and scholars need to focus on approaches and ideas that can foster harmony, coexistence, and tolerance in society.

Remember, Islam has a complete system — one that provides clear guidance for justice, equality, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. Moreover, Islam does not stop there: it guides humanity in such a way that whether one is a ruler or a subject, and wherever one lives, one should remain balanced and moderate. It emphasises human rights, social cooperation, and the necessity of living peacefully in a pluralistic society.

Despite all this, there is still a gap in our attitude. We must strengthen human relationships and work together for the survival and well-being of humanity.

It is also a fact that the challenges of our present time are different from those of the past, and the challenges of the future will again be different from today. Therefore, along with equipping ourselves intellectually and academically, we must highlight and promote from our rich Islamic literature those ideas that can respond rationally and effectively to the objections raised against Islam, while also fulfilling the genuine needs of the modern age.

When we look back at history and compare it with the present, we realise that today’s questions and challenges have their own reality and truth. Wise nations never ignore facts or realities. Their mission and strategy are to adopt what is useful and necessary from modern developments — and if there is something objectionable, they respond to it with reason and evidence. To face facts boldly and defend truth both rationally and textually is an unavoidable responsibility.

The Muslim community already possesses principles and traditions which, if properly followed, can make society more confident and peaceful. The entire world has now become a global village, where social and cultural realities are viewed from new perspectives. In this context, it is the serious duty of scholars, preachers, writers, and thinkers to understand the situation with full awareness and then move forward thoughtfully.

Before delivering a speech, writing an article, or presenting any idea or opinion, one must reflect carefully — lest we, knowingly or unknowingly, say or write something that may lead to unrest or corruption in society. Sadly, we often come across writings, speeches, and careless opinions that leave a deeply negative impact on society.

Indeed, society is not only endangered by criminals or wrongdoers but also — and perhaps more so — by irresponsible writings and statements.

It must be emphasised that the literature being produced today in our educational institutions and research centres in the name of Islam or religion, as well as the sermons being delivered by preachers for moral and social reform — all these need to be evaluated. We must ask: do they truly meet the needs of the society, or are we still far from fulfilling our real intellectual and moral responsibilities?

If the answer is positive, then we must further improve and refine this work. But if the answer is negative, then there is an urgent need to harmonise our methods and approaches with the demands of the age.

Today it is vitally important to help society move forward positively and to give convincing answers to the confused questions arising in people’s minds. Every piece of writing has its own importance — whether it reflects positive ideas or negative thoughts — but lasting and meaningful literature is only that which removes intellectual confusion and brings humanity back to the right path.

Especially those who write, speak, and interpret Islamic knowledge and wisdom must weigh every single word carefully and reflect deeply before expressing it.

In light of the above lines, it can be said with full confidence Islamic heritage is not merely a memory of the past; it is a living source of intellectual, moral, and spiritual guidance for every aspect of human life. From its earliest period, Islam placed great emphasis on knowledge, reason, justice, tolerance, research, and dialogue — principles that laid the foundation of one of the most vibrant civilisations in history. The teachings of the Qur’an, the example of the Prophet Muhammad , and the practices of the Rightly Guided Caliphs shaped a culture that valued both faith and intellect.

One of the distinctive features of Islamic heritage is its balance between reason and revelation. Early Muslim thinkers such as Imam Ghazali, Ibn Rushd, Al-Farabi, and Ibn Khaldun harmonised faith with science, intellect with spirituality, and religion with worldly knowledge. This intellectual harmony made Islamic civilization a centre of learning and progress for centuries.

Although later periods witnessed a decline while the West advanced through science and industrialisation, Islamic heritage still possesses the potential to meet the challenges of the modern world. The need is to reinterpret and apply its principles to contemporary realities rather than treating it as a closed chapter of history.

In today’s globalised and digitally connected world, major intellectual debates revolve around religion, ethics, human rights, freedom, justice, gender equality, interfaith harmony, and environmental balance. Islamic teachings offer a comprehensive and practical framework for all these issues. Concepts such as human dignity, equality, and justice, presented by the Qur’an long before modern times, can contribute deeply to global ethical discussions. The Charter of Madinah stands as an early example of peaceful coexistence and interreligious understanding.

Another vital part of Islamic heritage is the spirit of ijtihad (intellectual reasoning) and Tajdid (renewal). Islam encourages the use of intellect and experience to find solutions to emerging problems. By reviving this spirit, Muslim scholars can bridge the gap between religion and science, reason and revelation.

Furthermore, Islamic heritage promotes dialogue, diversity of thought, and respect for difference. It teaches that disagreement is not hostility but intellectual richness. In a world troubled by extremism and moral crisis, Islamic principles of moderation, balance, and human respect offer a way forward.

Ultimately, Islamic heritage is a timeless source of enlightenment. When presented in contemporary language and applied with wisdom, it can guide humanity towards harmony, justice, and moral progress — linking the greatness of the past with the needs of the future.
