Neglect of Social Issues and Its Harms

By Dr. Zafar Darik Qasmi, New Age Islam

Abstract:

This article talks about the harm caused when society ignores its real problems. It explains that when many people present themselves as protectors of the community and traditions, it becomes difficult to know who is truly sincere. Because of this confusion, people often end up trusting the wrong leaders. The article shows that, especially within the Muslim community, leadership is sometimes used for personal benefit instead of serving the community honestly. India, being a diverse and secular country, needs inclusive thinking rather than politics focused on only one group. It also highlights how the energy of young people is wasted through rigid ideas, emotional pressure, and useless debates on social media. As a result, important issues such as education, justice, poverty, and moral values are ignored. The article concludes that real progress is possible only when society understands its true problems and works seriously to solve them. Ignoring these issues leads to confusion and long-term damage to society.

Main Points:

·         Ignoring real social issues creates confusion and allows false leaders to misguide society.

·         Personal interests often replace sincere leadership, causing long-term harm to community welfare.

·         India’s plural society needs inclusive thinking, not politics centred on one community alone.

·         Youth energy is wasted through manipulation, sectarian rigidity, and meaningless social media debates.

·         Social progress depends on prioritising education, justice, moral values, and collective responsibility.

The issue of protecting community concerns and national traditions arises when there are many people who claim to be their guardians and custodians. In such a situation, it becomes extremely difficult to understand who is actually responsible for protecting the national heritage. This question emerges because, at such times, the public becomes unable to make the right decisions, and even a looter appears to them as a protector and guardian.

The tragedy of today is that many people have come forward claiming leadership, authority, and guidance of the community. However, the truth is that very few of them—perhaps hardly any—have risen above self-made compromises and personal interests to genuinely work for the protection of community traditions, national concerns, and the culture and identity of the Muslim community.

Even today, there is no shortage of individuals within the Muslim community who claim to ensure its protection. These include religious groups as well as political and social groups. But the question still remains: is the responsibility of true leadership of the Muslim community being fulfilled in its real sense? This question is extremely important and cannot be ignored. If sincere efforts had truly been made from the time of independence until now to lead the Muslim community and solve its problems, perhaps the condition of the community would not be what it is today. Instead, many people used the name of the Muslim community to serve their personal interests. As a result, the situation has reached a point where open hatred and verbal attacks against Muslims are common, yet there is hardly anyone willing to take effective action.

India is a pluralistic and secular country. Success here can only be achieved when political planning takes into account the country’s plural character and follows the principle of moving forward together with everyone. It is not appropriate to design political strategies by focusing on only one community, whether Muslim or any other. History bears witness that those who worked with this inclusive vision achieved success, while those who focused only on one community—regardless of their religion—were never fully accepted by Indian society.

In the present circumstances, there is an even greater need for political wisdom, organised planning, and deep political insight. This is because, at present, the Muslim community is facing various challenges not only at the national level but also internationally. Many of these issues are directly connected to religion and faith, as well as to culture and civilization. Efforts are being made to restrict the Muslim community to such an extent that it cannot live freely and independently. We must seriously reflect on all these issues. To ensure the survival of our traditions and culture, we must become active and responsible.

It is also deeply unfortunate that today the youth of our community—and the potential future of the country—are being wasted. Their energy is not being used where it should be. Some are being exploited in the name of religion, others are kept trapped in sectarian traditions and rigid rules, while in some cases, young people are deliberately kept away from understanding and awareness. They are pushed into actions where they are unable to ask questions or think about their own future.

Another painful reality is that a large section of the youth is trapped in meaningless and unnecessary debates on social media. These discussions have no real connection with society, nor does society benefit from them. Amid all this, the real social issues are pushed into the background. Therefore, in today’s situation, it is extremely important to focus on real issues and make society aware of them. Otherwise, in the desire to become thinkers and leaders, we may remain stuck in useless debates while completely ignoring the real problems. The consequences of such neglect are obvious to everyone.

We must remember that the progress, stability, and prosperity of any society depends on how well it recognizes its real and fundamental problems and how seriously it works to solve them. When a nation or society turns its attention away from real issues and becomes involved in unnecessary, secondary, or artificial matters, the results are deeply negative and long-lasting. This is why neglecting real issues is considered a serious intellectual and practical weakness, which gradually destroys the entire social structure.

By real issues, we mean those basic matters that are directly related to the survival and development of individuals, institutions, and society—such as education, health, economic justice, moral values, social harmony, the rule of law, and intellectual awareness. When these important matters are ignored and attention is focused only on superficial debates, temporary emotions, or irrelevant disputes, the real issues remain unresolved and become even more complex over time.

The greatest harm of ignoring real issues appears in the form of intellectual confusion. People fail to understand what their true problems are and what their priorities should be. As a result, serious dialogue disappears, emotional slogans take over, and short-term interests are given priority over real concerns. This intellectual confusion also affects educational institutions, academic activities, and research, where superficial and formal work is valued more than quality and depth.

Similarly, ignoring real issues causes serious damage at the practical level. When basic problems are not given importance in policy-making and decision-making, development plans fail. Resources are misused, and public needs are not fulfilled. As a result, problems such as poverty, unemployment, ignorance, and injustice become more severe, while no effective and long-term solutions are developed.

From a moral and social perspective, neglecting real issues is equally harmful. When a society ignores moral decline, injustice, and corruption, mutual trust begins to disappear. People start giving priority to personal interests over collective welfare, weakening social relationships and harming social harmony. In such an environment, voices of reform are silenced, and wrong practices become normal.

Neglect of real issues is not limited to one area alone. Its effects are visible at every level—intellectual, educational, economic, moral, and social. If a society truly wants progress and lasting prosperity, it must recognise its basic and real problems, prioritise them, and work sincerely, wisely, and responsibly towards their solutions. This way of thinking lays the foundation for a balanced, aware, and strong society.

It can be said that sensitive nations and societies clearly recognise their social and national priorities, while stagnant societies are often unaware of their own priorities. Looking at the current condition of society, it seems that we are losing the ability to focus on our social, national, and welfare-related issues. Therefore, we must once again think seriously about how to direct our attention towards shared national traditions and common social problems.

By understanding the consequences and effects of neglecting social issues, it becomes clear how essential it is to focus on real social problems.
