In the praise of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W), Allah (SWT) declares; ‘Wara faana laka zikrak - we exalted for you your renown (Surah As-Sharh 94:4). Many annotators have interpreted this in numerous ways, and one of the scholars mentions that while Allah himself has raised the mention of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W), he also confers honour and elevation to those who remember, love, and send blessings upon him. Myriad instances prove this fact. We often talk about personages like Imam Busiri, Molana Jami, and Imam Ahmad Raza Khan, etc., for similar reasons. And Sayyid Ja‘far ibn Hasan al-Barzanji (Author of Mawlid al-Barzanji) also belongs to the same kind of people whose contribution to the veneration of Prophet Muhammad became their identification.

Early Life and Lineage

Sayyid Ja‘far ibn Hasan ibn ‘Abd al-Karim al-Barzanji is remembered with numerous honorifics like al-Husayni, al-Madani, and al-Shafi‘i. He was born into a noble and scholarly family known as al-Barzanji - originally from Barzinj (Kurdistan region) in the month of Shabaan 1128 (1716 CE). Later, his family settled in Madinah, where they earned a name for religious scholarship and piety. He was a Sayyid, tracing his lineage back to Imam Husayn ibn ‘Ali (A.S) and thus to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W). Sayyid Ja’far grew up in the shades of the Prophet’s mosque, an atmosphere saturated with knowledge, spirituality, and devotion, and that had a determining role in the infusion of all the finest features into Sayyid.

Education and Scholarship

Sayyid Ja‘far received his primary education in Madinah, studying under leading scholars of his time. He excelled in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) – Shafi‘i school, Hadith, Aqidah (Islamic theology), Arabic language, and rhetoric. Due to his in-depth knowledge and moral uprightness, he was appointed as the Mufti of the Shafi‘i school in Madinah, a position of great uprightness and honour.

Spiritual Status and Character

He came to prominence for his extreme love for the Prophet (S.A.A.W). His humility and refined manners added to his best character that made him well-loved among the common masses. And the eloquence in speech and writing got him fame in the scholarly community.

A Spiritually Uplifting Presence

For scholars and students, he was the man whose words mollified hearts and revived love for the Messenger of Allah (S.A.A.W). His notable and enduring work is Mawlid al-Barzanji, simply known as al-Barzanji, which is recited all around the globe and aids in strengthening one’s attachment to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W).

About the work

It is a prose biography of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.A.W) with a one-off poetic tinge. It covers the Prophet’s lineage, birth, character, miracles, and mission. It has been written in extremely persuasive, rhythmic Arabic.

It appears that the actual intent behind the work was to inspire love, reverence, and reflection, which it efficaciously does.

Death and Legacy

Sayyid Ja‘far al-Barzanji passed away in 1177 AH (1764 CE) in Madinah, the city of the Prophet (S.A.A.W), and was buried there. It is said that al-Barzanji gave an inkling of his death days before. His grandson reports that Syed Kamal Al-Halbi said, ‘Syed Abul-Hassan Hindi of India came to him with two questions. Al-Barzanji answered them in writing and under his sign scribed ‘Al-Muntaqal’e Ila Rehmati Rabii (The one departing to the mercy of his God), and these were his last authored words. Then he asked Al-Halbi to return the writing to Al-Hindi. Al-Hindi said; Honourable! Why are you hopeless about your life? Al-Barzanji answered back which day is it today? Sunday, answered Al-Hindi. Al-Barzanji prolonged the conversation and said Sunday, Monday, Tuesday……Tuesday after Asr (Afternoon prayers), I will leave all of you and respond to Allah’s call. And the same followed later.

His legacy lives on primarily through Mawlid al-Barzanji, which continues to amplify love for the Prophet (S.A.A.W) in the hearts of believers. It serves as a literary and spiritual masterpiece that unites generations in remembrance of the Messenger (S.A.A.W).

Introduction of Mawlid-e-Barzanji in Kashmir

Mawlid-i-Barzanji is recited everywhere. It is widely read in Ottoman lands, Yemen, Hijaz, and the Indian subcontinent. In Kashmir, it forms the cornerstone of Mawlid congregations. Its history in the valley dates back centuries. Religious historians have written that in 1300 H, Allama Mir Syed Qasim Qadri Mantaqi went for pilgrimage to Mecca with his highbrow father, Hazrat Shaykh Syed Hussain Qadri Mantaqi (founder of Dargah e Gousia Aali-Kadal Srinagar), and received the permission for the introduction of Mawlid-e-Barzanji in the valley. Since then, it continues to be a significant part of spiritual occasions. Molana Showkat Hussain Keng, in his authored book ‘Seerat-e-Bukhari’ mention that Allama Syed Qasim Shah Bukhari would hold Mawlid-e-Barzanji gatherings at home. One of his illustrious students, Molana Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, had a unique style of reciting it. Blessed with a soulful voice, he would start with a short biography of the author, then the author's purpose, followed by its significance. I have heard him say that sincere recitation of Mawlid-e-Barzanji brings divine protection, keeping calamities, epidemics, and fire at bay. Molana exulted in the fact that he had been authorised by his mentor, Allama Bukhari, to recite the Mawlid-e-Barjanzi. In his final poetry, he stated it with gratification;

Aaw Naalan Mushtaq Karus Nazrah

Yuth chu tyuth pouz Mawlood Khanei Chon

(Wailingly, Mushtaq has come seeking your glance

Whatever he is, he is a truthful reciter of your Mawlid.

Sayyid Ja‘far al-Barzanji was not merely a scholar, but a voice of devotion — one whose words continue to echo love for the Prophet (S.A.A.W) across centuries and will live forever in the hearts of millions.
