Islamic Principles for Contemporary Issues

Abstract:

This article explains how Islam guides Muslims in dealing with modern issues. Today’s world has many new inventions that make life easier, but their correct use is very important. Misuse can harm society and disturb peace. Selfishness and misuse of power are growing problems. Islam teaches that new matters should be understood through general principles when clear answers are not found in Qur’an or Hadith. Scholars should think deeply, consult experts, and avoid quick judgements. They must also try to create Islamic alternatives for modern systems like banking. The article highlights flexibility in following different schools of thought when needed. It also warns against narrow thinking and unqualified opinions. Proper understanding can help present Islam positively and guide people in today’s changing world.

Main Points:

·         Islam allows using general principles to solve new issues not clearly mentioned in texts.

·         Modern inventions should be used responsibly, otherwise they can harm society and disturb social balance.

·         Scholars must avoid quick decisions and should consult experts before giving opinions on new matters.

·         Islamic alternatives should be developed for modern systems like banking, insurance, and global financial practices.

·         Flexibility in following different schools helps reduce hardship and makes religion easier for people.

In the present age, inventions, innovations and discoveries have brought about a great revolution in the world. New tools and facilities are continuously emerging. These developments are clearly designed to provide comfort and ease for human beings. However, their positive impact on society depends on their proper and responsible use. Harmful aspects must be avoided so that society does not suffer any damage.

If we observe current conditions, we can see that narrow-mindedness, selfishness and personal interests are increasing in society. These problems are not limited to one field; rather, they exist in almost every sector. Such attitudes are gradually disturbing social balance and peace. Many people are now using modern resources to show power and dominance, which is harming public rights and national interests.

Humanity can truly benefit from modern developments only when their constructive and positive aspects are adopted. Along with this, there is also an important religious dimension. Whenever a new issue or invention appears, a thoughtful person naturally asks: what is its relation to religion? Is it permissible according to religious teachings or not?

In this regard, Islamic jurists have presented important principles. By studying them, we can understand how religion guides us in dealing with modern issues. Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani has explained three key principles for addressing new problems.

The first principle is that when a new issue is not clearly mentioned in the Qur’an, Hadith, or earlier juristic opinions, then general principles of Islam should be applied. This process is called ijtihad, specifically Tahqiq al-Manat. Ijtihad has three stages: identifying the cause of a ruling, refining it, and applying it to new situations. Scholars have stated that while some forms of ijtihad may have become limited, this third type will continue until the Day of Judgement. Many modern issues fall under this category, such as whether voting in elections can be considered a form of political participation similar to traditional concepts in Islam.

The second principle is that modern developments—such as advanced communication, global connections, complex business systems, banking, insurance, and international financial institutions—have created new realities. It is not enough to simply declare them unlawful due to elements like interest or uncertainty. Instead, scholars must work within the framework of the Qur’an and Sunnah to develop Islamic alternatives. This is necessary to prove that Islamic law is relevant for all times and capable of guiding changing circumstances.

Unfortunately, today many people issue quick judgements about modern issues without proper reflection or without seeking alternatives within Islamic teachings. This not only goes against the spirit of Islam but also harms its image. Therefore, scholars must think carefully, consult other experts, and avoid hasty decisions so that their guidance brings clarity and benefit rather than confusion and unrest.

It is also important to consult reliable institutions and qualified scholars. Ordinary individuals or those lacking proper knowledge should not be relied upon for religious guidance. Only then can religion be correctly represented.

The third principle is that if following one school of thought (such as the Hanafi school) causes genuine difficulty in certain situations, then it is permissible to benefit from other schools of Islamic jurisprudence when there is a real need. This flexibility is recognised by scholars and helps address practical challenges.

Looking at the current situation, it becomes clear that sectarian rigidity has made religion appear unnecessarily difficult. Many so-called religious leaders lack a proper understanding of both religion and contemporary realities. As a result, they sometimes make incorrect statements to gain popularity. Dividing religion into rigid sectarian boundaries has caused serious harm.

The truth is that guidance on modern issues in our society is often incomplete or provided by those who themselves lack sufficient understanding. This has led to confusion, extremism and even a negative image of Islam. Often, when faced with a new issue, people simply look for answers in a few traditional books without deeply analysing the matter in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith. This approach weakens the universal message of Islam.

If we truly believe that Islam provides solutions for all problems, then we must seriously engage with modern challenges instead of avoiding them. Today’s educated generation has many questions and doubts. It is our responsibility to provide clear and satisfactory answers. Only then can we fulfil the duty of representing Islam in its true spirit.
