'She Didn't Sign Up For This': Trump's Running Mate, Said About 'Dragging' Hindu Wife Usha To Church

Usha Vance, JD Vance Hindu wife

Oct 13, 2024

Ohio Senator and Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance has revealed he feels bad about bringing his wife, Usha Vance, to church every week, saying that "she didn't sign up for this." Vance said that Usha was raised in a Hindu household, has not converted to Catholicism despite attending Mass regularly.

In an interview with the New York Times, Vance, admitted to feeling uncomfortable about how his religious journey has affected his wife. “I feel — felt — kind of bad,” he explained. “Like, ‘Oh, you didn’t sign up to marry a weekly churchgoer, and are you OK with this?’ And she was sort of more than OK with it, and that was a big part of the confirmation that this was the right thing for me.”

Vance revealed that Usha encouraged him to explore Catholicism even though she did not follow the faith herself. “She thought that they were good for me, in a sort of good-for-your-soul kind of way,” he said. “I don’t think I would have ever done it without her support, because I felt kind of bad about it, right?”

Reflecting on his spiritual growth, Vance shared his deeper motivations. “When I started to think about the big things, like, what do I actually care about in my life? I really want to be a good husband. I really want to be a good father. I really want to be a good member of the community. I wanted to be a virtuous human being, in other words.”

Despite Usha's support, Vance acknowledged the pressures she faces. “I feel terrible for my wife because we go to church almost every Sunday, unless we’re on the road,” he said. He explained that although he helps with their children, Usha tends to feel the burden of keeping them quiet during the service. “Obviously, I help with the kids, but because I’m kind of the one going to church, she feels more responsibility to keep the kids quiet in the church.”

Usha and JD Vance met at Yale Law School and married in Kentucky in 2014, with a Hindu priest presiding over a separate ceremony. They have three children. Usha has been pivotal in JD’s political career, helping him shape his thoughts on rural America’s social decline, which inspired his best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. The book was adapted into a 2020 film by Ron Howard.

Palestinian Woman, Dima Hamdan Wins £30,000 LGBTQ+ Film Award

Sister Wives is described as a "beautifully nuanced and performed drama about two women rebelling against their community’s social and religious constraints"

A Palestinian woman has won the world's largest LGBTQ+ short film award.

Dima Hamdan said she was "deeply honoured" to receive the £30,000 2024 Iris Prize, because it was both "the 'Oscars' of the LGBTQ+ short film world" and "it comes from a community that has increasingly voiced its support for Palestine in recent years".

Former Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price, who chaired the international jury, called Blood Like Water "an important reminder that queer people exist everywhere, including in Palestine at a time of war and occupation".

According to the festival, her film "tells the story of Shadi, who embarks on a secret adventure and accidentally drags his family into a trap where they only have two choices; collaborate with the Israeli occupation or be shamed and humiliated by their own people".

Reacting to the prize, Hamdan said: "It is difficult to celebrate personal achievements when the most televised and live-streamed war in human history has dragged on for one year with no end in sight.

"In that vision, I take solace knowing that the Iris Film Prize, its wonderful team and the jury will hold a special place in my heart for standing with us and helping to amplify our voices."

He added: "This year the filmmakers have focused on the more serious aspect of LGBTQ+ life. Although many are dark there is still hope."

Sister Wives is described as a "multi-layered love story that tells the tale of young women living in a strict, fundamentalist, polygamous society in 2003 Utah, USA".

Tim Highsted, who chaired the jury for the Best British Short, called it a "beautifully nuanced and performed drama about two women rebelling against their community’s social and religious constraints and finding love for each other".

Iran Overturns Death Sentence For Sharifeh Mohammadi, Labour Activist: Media

October 12, 2024

TEHRAN: Iran’s highest court has overturned the death sentence of a woman labour rights activist who was accused of links to an outlawed Kurdish group, local media reported Saturday.

“The Supreme Court... has overturned the verdict against my client, Ms Sharifeh Mohammadi,” her lawyer Amir Raisian was quoted as saying by the reformist Shargh daily.

Iran carries out the highest number of executions annually after China, according to rights groups including Amnesty International.

Mohammadi, 45, was sentenced to death in early July following her arrest in the northern city of Rasht, according to rights groups.

She has since been accused of being a member of the Komala party, an exiled Iraq-based Kurdish separatist group that Tehran considers to be a terrorist organization.

Tehran accused Kurdish groups in Iraq of fomenting months-long nationwide mass protests triggered by the September 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini.

Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, died following her arrest over an alleged violation of the Islamic republic’s strict dress code for women.

The Islamic republic uses capital punishment for major crimes including terror convictions, murder and drug trafficking, as well as rape and sexual assault.

Imran’s Sisters, Aleema Khan And Uzma Khan, Shifted To Jhelum Jail On Judicial Remand

Hamid Asghar

October 13, 2024

GUJAR KHAN / ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, sisters of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, were shifted to the District Jail Jhelum from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Saturday after an anti-terrorism court rejected a police request seeking extension in their physical remand and ordered they be shifted to jail on judicial remand.

Foolproof security arrangements have been made in Jhelum, police sources confirmed. They also claimed that the number of prisoners to be shifted to the Jhelum jail is 500, adding that they were being shifted in small groups.

Earlier, the ATC in Rawalpindi while rejecting the police request for extending the physical remand issued notices regarding the two suspects’ bail applications.

Prosecutor Raja Naveed earlier pressed for further remand, arguing that police needed additional time to recover “critical evidence”, including mobile phones and other materials.

Another defence counsel, Usman Riaz Gill, said there are specific legal procedures for seeking remand for women which had not been followed properly.

He requested the court to play the footage of his clients during the protest, arguing that it would demonstrate the illegality of police actions.

The judge expressed dissatisfaction with the prosecution’s explanations, pointing out that police should have “documented every development” in the case.

'Rape survivor's safety most important': HC allows girl, 14, to terminate 29-week pregnancy

Oct 13, 2024

MUMBAI: Bombay HC allowed medical termination of over 29-week pregnancy of a 14-year-old rape survivor despite JJ Hospital medical board giving an opinion against it. "Desire and safety of the survivor is of utmost importance than any other consideration," said Justices SarangKotwal and NeelaGokhale in Thursday's order.

The minor's mother moved HC for permission as the pregnancy had crossed the permissible 24-week limit. The parents are dailywage labourers. On Sept 30, the daughter complained of stomach pain. She revealed she was sexually assaulted in July by a known person. It was repeated subsequently. On Oct 1, an FIR was lodged under BNS and Pocso Act. She was over 27 weeks pregnant.

The Oct 9 report of the seven-doctor board found her "29.1 weeks of gestational age with no congenital anomalies in the fetus". It stated that if she undergoes termination of pregnancy now, it will have the same risk and complications for her as if the pregnancy is continued to term. Also, she is physically and mentally fit to continue the pregnancy.

The mother's advocate, Ashley Cusher, said completion of pregnancy is still at least 8-9 weeks away. Considering the survivor's tender age, there is always a serious and grave risk to her life. State's advocate, M P Thakur, expressed concern for the child who may be born alive. The judges also considered that aspect. They spoke to the mother and daughter, who "categorically and emphatically stated that they wished to terminate the pregnancy."

They referred to a "particularly relevant" provision of Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act that, while determining whether continuance of pregnancy would involve risk of injury to the health of a pregnant woman, account may be taken of her actual or reasonably foreseeable environment. They noted that the survivor is of a tender age. She discovered her condition at a late stage. She is poor and is not in a position to raise the child. "Her actual environment also supports her desire for termination of pregnancy," they added.

The judges said what weighed on their minds was " safety of the survivor as the most important deciding factor". The judges directed the state to take steps to care for the child if born alive and, if necessary, give it in adoption.

Fresh protests in Turkiye over violence against women

AFP

October 13, 2024

ISTANBUL: Hundreds of women protested in Turkiye Saturday against a wave of murders of women, the latest rallies in response to a recent double slaying in Istanbul.

A crowd of hundreds in Istanbul chanted slogans denouncing Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamic-rooted AKP party, an AFP correspondent reported.

GulizarSezer, the mother of a young woman who was murdered, also addressed the rally. Her daughter’s body was found in June after being thrown into the sea wrapped in a carpet.

Other protests took place in the capital Ankara and Izmir, another major city, according to photos posted by a women’s rights federation.

The suspect and the two women were all aged 19, said Istanbul officials. The women had been killed within 30 minutes of each other, they added.

Erdogan, having initially blamed alcohol and social media, on Wednesday promised to toughen the justice system and crack down harder on crime.

One monitoring group says there have been 299 murders of women this year in the country of 85 million people, with more than 160 “suspect” killings officially classed as suicides or accidents.

In 2021, Turkiye withdrew from the Council of Europe convention on preventing violence against women, known as the Istanbul convention.
