Women in Tehran Evin Prison Protest “Heinous” Executions
Evin Prison
-----
MAY 22, 2023
A group of
women political prisoners staged a protest in the courtyard of Tehran’s Evin
prison following the execution of three protesters last week.
The gathering,
which took place on the evening of May 20, brought together prominent activists
such as Narges Mohammadi, Faezeh Hashemi, Bahareh Hedayat, Golrokh Iraei, Vida
Rabbani and Sepideh Qolian.
In her speech,
Mohammadi called the executions a "brutal act of retribution."
"Iran of
today is vastly different from the Iran of the past, and the recent executions
will yield outcomes contrary to the government's intentions," she added.
Iranian
authorities escalated executions in recent weeks to try to instil fear in
society following months-long nationwide protests sparked by the September
death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody.
On May 19,
three protesters were executed after the authorities held rushed trials, pushed
the accused into forced “confessions" and denied them due process,
sparking an outcry both inside and outside Iran.
During the protest
in Evin prison’s courtyard, Hedayat urged political forces to develop a
comprehensive plan to secure the victory for the protesters.
Iraei
underscored the importance of voicing protest over the ongoing wave of
executions.
Silence would
only "bolster the leaders and perpetrators of these heinous crimes, as
well as their international allies who prioritize diplomatic relations over
condemning such acts."
The Islamic
Republic has cracked down hard on last year’s widespread protests demanding
fundamental economic, social and political changes.
More than 520
people were killed during demonstrations and over 20,000 others were unlawfully
detained, activists say. Following biased trials, the judiciary has handed down
stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.

UN Women Say
They Are 'Uniquely Impacted by Restrictions in Afghanistan’
23-05-23
UN Women in a
statement said the latest restrictions on women in Afghanistan has uniquely
impacted UN women.
The statement
said that since 4 April 2023, all national staff including men and women have
worked from home.
“Seventy
percent of our staff are women. Fifty-five percent of our national staff are
women,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, some
women activists said that women’s inclusion in social life is important, and
they urged the Islamic Emirate to allow women go to their workplaces.
“We have
witnessed foreign support regarding Afghanistan that supports women. But we
have not seen women being supported inside of Afghanistan,” said Suraya Paikan,
women’s rights activist.
“Without
women’s presence in the society, the improvement of the society is impossible.
We call on the Islamic Emirate to rescind its order of banning women from
work,” said Marriam, an employee of the UN.
This comes as
the Deputy Minister of Economy (MoE), Abdul Latif Nazari, also stressed the
need for women’s presence in the health and trade sectors.
“The role of
women currently in health and trade sectors is vital, and of course in small
industry. Of course the presence of women has been felt in small industries,”
he said.
It has been
more than five months since women have been banned from working at NGOs.

Saudi Designer
HonaydaSerafiTalks Symbolism In Rajwa Al-Saif’sHenna Gown Ahead Of Jordan’s
Royal Wedding
May 22, 2023
DUBAI: On
Monday night, Jordan’s Queen Rania hosted the pre-wedding henna night
celebrations for Saudi Arabia’s Rajwa Al-Saif, who will marry Jordan’s Crown
Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II on June 1.
Al-Saif looked
radiant in an ethereal white creation by celebrity-loved Saudi designer
HonaydaSerafi, who spoke to Arab News about the meaning behind the fashion
statement.
“When I first
got the call, I was extremely happy and proud to be part of this exceptional
and historical moment. What I am especially proud of is communicating the love
story between the crown prince and Rajwa in the design itself,” Serafi told
Arab News, adding that she was first briefed about the design at the end of
February 2023.
“The brief was
that she wanted to wear something very modest and something from Saudi Arabian
culture, but with a modern twist. She wanted the piece to be very elegant, and
she also wanted it to be white,” added Serafi, whose label Honayda became the
first Saudi fashion brand to be showcased at luxury London department store
Harrods in 2022.
For the gown,
Serafi took inspiration from the Al-Shaby thobe of the Najd region in Saudi Arabia,
where Al-Saif’s family is from.
“The thobe is
known for its long sleeves. They’re so long, the sleeves become the veil of the
bride’s dress,” said Serafi.
“The white
color usually symbolizes purity and elegance. And there is a beautiful meaning
to a bride wearing white. However, the henna dress is not really known to be
white. So, this is a modern and new take,” added Serafi, talking about
Al-Saif’s desire to wear white on the occasion.
Another bride
who wore white to celebrate her henna party recently was Al-Saif’s future
sister-in-law, Princess Iman bint Abdullah II, ahead of her marriage with
Jameel Alexander Thermiotis, which took place on March 12.
Serafi wanted
the henna party gown to reflect a new era of Saudi fashion, one that is modern yet
rooted in tradition and history.
Apart from the
references to Al-Saif’s Saudi heritage, the dress also has nods to Jordanian
culture in honor of the bride’s future family.
Serafi included
the seven-pointed white star that is present on the Jordanian national flag,
which symbolizes the seven verses of Surat Al-Fatiha in the Qur’an, as well as
the “seven hills Amman was built on,” the designer explained.
“The symbol is
a protection for the couple’s eternal love,” she added.
Other details
in the dress include Saudi Arabia’s palm trees, which symbolize life and
vitality, as well as a verse by famous Tunisian poet AboulQacemEchebbi, which
translates to, “When my eyes see you, life becomes right,” etched into the
dress in Arabic lettering.
“My intention
behind designing this dress was to document the eternal love and the history of
the royal wedding. And, of course, I have used traditional threads and it is
all hand embroidered,” said Serafi.
“This is a big
moment for the brand to be part of such a historical (event). It is such an
honor and I feel that I’m very, very proud to represent Saudi designers, as
well as to communicate to the new generation how to not only honor Saudi
Arabia’s historical identity and heritage, but to express it in a modern way,”
she added.

23-05-23
Bogor, West
Java (ANTARA) - Indonesia and the Islamic Republic of Iran have agreed to voice
support for the right to education for women in Afghanistan and are committed
to helping resolve the humanitarian crisis in the country.
During the
visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to the Presidential Palace in Bogor,
West Java, on Tuesday, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) also highlighted the
shared commitment of the two countries to support the struggle of the
Palestinian people.
"We agree
to continue supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people and address the
humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan by continuing to voice support for education
access for women in Afghanistan and provide humanitarian assistance,"
Jokowi stated.
In addition to
discussing bilateral cooperation, the two leaders also discussed the global
geopolitical situation.
Raisi stated
that his side has a similar vision to that of Indonesia to support Afghanistan
in realizing an inclusive government that represents the country's faiths and
ethnic groups.
The Iranian

to be present in various sectors, such as politics, social affairs, education,
and culture.
"Afghan
women and girls could elevate the honor of the country because they are an
honor for Islam," Raisi emphasized.
He also said
that Indonesia is Iran's partner and friend in addressing regional and
international issues.
Indonesia and
Iran are also members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the
Non-Aligned Movement.
Raisi's visit
to Indonesia, at Jokowi's official invitation, is his first since being
inaugurated as president in 2021. Raisi will be in Indonesia until Wednesday
(May 24).
