A young Moroccan woman was banned from travelling due to her appearance on a blind dating show wearing a short skirt. Many Moroccan women say they are terrified of the fallout.

"Under the Kingdom's sun, retrograde patriarchal and misogynistic ideologies still thrive," commented Betty Lachgar, a renowned Moroccan feminist, in response to the incident.

The story began earlier this month when the Moroccan YouTube channel Kawaliss released a 40-minute video titled "Blind Dating By Outfit," the first episode of a planned YouTube series inspired by a popular American show of the same name.

The video's concept was certainly controversial for some Moroccans, yet the protagonist's wardrobe choice, namely her short skirt, was widely dubbed "scandalous" by most viewers.

In response to the backlash, Armani, the video's protagonist, apologised on her personal TikTok account for the video's content and attire, stating that she "did not grow up in Moroccan society, but in the Netherlands, where short skirts are normal."

Despite the apology, the influencer, who boasts half a million followers, was banned from leaving the country on April 19 pending an ongoing police investigation "into the content of the video." Armani did not respond to The New Arab's request for comment by the time of publication.

According to Moroccan lawyer Hayat Moutawakil, Armani and the video's creators could face up to ten years in jail for charges including "indecency and nudity" and "incitement of minors to prostitution."

On social media, several Moroccan women launched the hashtag "all in miniskirts," posting faceless pictures of themselves wearing short skirts and dresses.

"My miniskirt and I have landed safely in Marrakech. Please don't block us at the borders," posted a Moroccan user on X named Karam, mocking the travel ban against Armani.

The feminist movement Moroccan outlaws supported the campaign, emphasising that "wearing a short skirt is not a crime."

This movement and numerous local NGOs advocate for changes to the penal and family codes—two laws often criticised as patriarchal and outdated.

Morocco's penal code vaguely criminalises public acts of "indecency" and punishes sexual relationships outside of wedlock.

Meanwhile, Morocco's family code still permits child marriage and unequal inheritance between genders and grants complete guardianship to fathers in divorce cases.

Despite plans to introduce a new, more progressive family code this year, the recent skirt debacle has dampened hopes of any significant departures from the North African kingdom's current conservative norms.

APRIL 23, 2024

Parisa Salehi, a journalist, has stated that she has been summoned to the Karaj Justice Department to begin her 5-month prison term.

In a social media post, she mentioned: "I received a notification yesterday, instructing me to report to the 7th Branch of Karaj Execution of Sentences office within the next five days to commence serving the sentence."

Back in February, Salehi was initially sentenced to one year in prison, accompanied by two years of travel ban, two years of prohibition from online activities, and two years of exile to Zanjan.

The ruling was issued by the head of the first branch of the Karaj Revolutionary Court on charges of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic."

Salehi has pointed out various irregularities in the legal proceedings, including the denial of her right to a retrial.

Delhi Auto Rickshaw Driver Bilkis Khan Aims to Drive a Bus

24-04-2024

 Aasha Khosa

Indian women are breaking into male bastions including driving public transport vehicles. One such bold woman is Bilkis Khan; she ferries commuters in her auto rickshaw in Delhi to support her family of three children.

Bilkis Khan told Awaz-the Voice that like all women she too wanted to lead a normal life as a homemaker, taking care of her family and managing the house. However, during 17 years of her marriage with a person who was addicted to alcohol and drug, happiness and stability eluded her,

Two years ago, this Muslim woman took a bold step of separating from her husband to take charge of her life.

“My illiterate husband did not want my children to study. He was an alcohol and drug addict. I worked in the housekeeping department in a hostel but that money was not enough for us to lead a normal life.” She said.

Bilkis had studied up to the 8th standard. “My parents have left this world. I had to find a source of income to maintain my children and give them a good life and a bright future. My sister, who is a bus driver, suggested that I drive an auto rickshaw for a living.”

Bilkis Khan told Awaz-the Voice, "I joined 28-day training for autorickshaw driving under the Delhi government scheme. At its end, I got my driving license. The course and license fees was waived off”.

Thereafter, she joined the ETO company that has hubs across Delhi. “Each morning, I take auto rickshaw number 1382 from the hub and ferry passengers across the city.”

Bilkis Khan admits initially she faced difficulty as the male drivers did take her entry into their domain kindly. “They asked me to remove my auto from the auto stand. I had to fight and stand firm on my ground. Some even used cuss words about me but I did not yield.”

Gradually, society accepted her and other women auto drivers. “Even today many passengers are afraid to sit in my auto because they think that a woman can only cook; driving an auto on the roads is not their cup of tea.”

Auto driver Bilkis Khan said initially too she was shy to drive an auto rickshaw as I am supposed to solicit passengers at the intersections and roadsides. “Gradually I found people were happy to ride in my auto; many praised my driving. This encouraged me.”

After this, she realized that auto driving is better than working for someone else or cleaning and tidying up someone's house. “I am not only the auto driver but also the driver of my life. I get a monthly salary of Rs 15,000 from my company out of which I pay Rs 4500 as rent for my house, fees of my children, and buy groceries.”

Auto driver Bilkis Khan said she is happily living with my children in a rented house in East Delhi. Her elder daughter Sija Khan, 17, has joined a college. Her younger daughter Zoya, 15, and son Ayaan, 10, are in school.

Bilkis Khan says she wants to make her children financially independent. “They should stand on their feet, especially my lovely daughters. I will not let them work till they complete their studies and are fit to start earning.”

“I separated from my husband two years ago. I don't remember my wedding day but I remember every penny I earned through my hard work. I thank my sister who showed me this path. I want to become a bus driver like my sister in the future.”

Auto driver Bilkis Khan says, "It has been more than a year since I have been driving an auto. I mostly park my auto near Lotus Temple, Kalkaji Temple, ISKCON Temple, Nehru Place, Akshardham Temple, or outside the metro station.”

Our electric auto company has given me a target of collection of Rs 650 per day. I work under the guidance of Mansi Madam from my auto company Hub. If my auto stops in the middle of the road, I can leave it there after informing the company. I can also do minor repairs.”

Bilkis Khan says that after completing the household work by noon and sending the children to school, she leaves for her job. “Sometimes I drive even at night. I drive an auto for about 8 to 9 hours a day. Sometimes there is a squabble even over the fare of a ride but that's part of my job.

Her company has also launched a mobile application called Sojo app for booking online rides round the clock, she said.

In this era of competition, Bilkis Khan takes passengers to their destinations through both online and offline rides. Recently she was conferred with the Pink Auto Rider Award in Delhi.

Bilkis feels women don’t lag in any field. “If a woman is determined, she can do anything; society has to respect her because she is not asking for anything.”

Pro-Hijab Rally in Iran Fails to Gain Public Support

APRIL 23, 2024

A call made for a government-sponsored rally in support of compulsory hijab in Iran has again met with disdain.

A recent rally was held in Tehran to "protest against non-compliance with hijab," among numerous other such demonstrations organized in the past few months by various institutions of the Islamic Republic.

Despite fervent advertisements, no substantial participation materialized.

Media outlets affiliated with the Islamic Republic labeled the protest as "spontaneous." They reported it as an assembly of "veiled women advocating against non-hijab and inappropriate attire" on April 22.

Contrary to these assertions, a message circulated on a local messaging network originating from a channel linked to Tehran's Command Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

The message urged participation in a "Support for Chastity and Hijab" rally, denouncing efforts for having clothing choices as "enemy plots" and calling on "all veiled and concerned women" to march.

Despite extensive promotion, eyewitnesses confirm that the gathering barely numbered 300 attendees.

An eyewitness spoke to IranWire regarding the mandatory hijab supporters' assembly, saying, "Until four o'clock in the afternoon, the covered tent barely sheltered 300 attendees.

However, the organized parking of buses around the square suggested a potentially coordinated effort."

Participants of this ostensibly spontaneous rally brandished red flags and were closely monitored by plainclothed officers on motorcycles stationed on the square's north side.

They echoed slogans such as "Revolutionary police ... Thank you, police force," " Hijab is our honor," and "The silence of every Muslim is a betrayal of the Quran."

Nevertheless, low turnout failed to facilitate the intended "march," which concluded at Valiasr Square.

Similar gatherings advocating for hijab in various Iranian cities have met a comparable fate.

After the start of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in 2022, the Islamic Republic repeatedly called for assemblies under diverse pretexts.

The propaganda machine previously mobilized its supporters amidst massive public dissent, notably during the November 2019 protests.

Since April 13, Iran's law enforcement agencies have intensified the enforcement of hijab regulations under the national action plan "Noor."

Across Iran, there have been numerous reports of women being arrested and subjected to the use of force due to perceived violations of dress codes.

Users across social networks are participating in a spontaneous campaign using the hashtag "war against women" to document their experiences and observations regarding the government's crackdown on the opponents of mandatory hijab.

Reports have surfaced detailing the use of repressive tactics, particularly on female students in various universities.

Moreover, pressure has also been mounting on civil activists, political dissenters, women political prisoners, and cultural figures.

Iran Blocks Dozens of Social Media Accounts Amid Crackdown on Women

APRIL 23, 2024

As part of the ongoing crackdown against women in Iran, authorities have now targeted social media accounts they deem "inappropriate."

Kyomars Azizi, police commander of western Tehran province, stated they monitored social media and identified 21 Instagram pages "publishing inappropriate images and breaking norms."

These pages, with large followings, were blocked, and legal action was taken against their moderators.

Azizi emphasized ongoing police monitoring of online activity, warning people of legal consequences for "crimes committed in cyberspace."

Since April 13, Iran's law enforcement agencies have intensified the enforcement of hijab regulations under the national action plan "Noor."

The arrests of women and the use of force against them for perceived violation of mandatory dress codes have been reported from across the country.
