AFGHANISTAN
Psychiatrists
reported that more female students had been coming to visit them recently.
One of
Kabul's psychiatrists, Safa Farzaei, said that 90 of 100 patients he sees are
female and that most of them are students.
“If we
examine 100 patients, 90 patients of them are girls and women. Mostly school
students and university students come here. The problems they tell us about are
extreme sadness, suicide attempts,” Farzaei noted.
"We
have most of the problems with women over the age of fifteen because the
suspension of schools creates an environment conducive to despair, and over the
age of eighteen there are problems with the closing of universities,”
ZikrayaBarikzai, another psychiatrist.
Meanwhile,
female students expressed their sadness over the fact that their schools have
not yet reopened, saying that this has put mental and emotional pressure on
them.
“I tried
a lot to reach somewhere, but we were completely unlucky. We missed everything
in Afghanistan,” Sadaf told a TOLOnews reporter.
Students
and their families asked the current government to reopen girls' schools
immediately.
“I ask
the Islamic Emirate to reopen schools to girls so that they contribute to the
progress of their country,” said Qudsiya, a student.
“They
were going to university and school with a special joy, and when school was
closed they became very depressed and isolated,” said Firoza, the mother of a
student.
Earlier,
Human Rights Watch in a report criticized the restrictions placed on Afghan
women and said that since the Islamic Emirate was reestablished, Afghan females
have been denied access to jobs, education, and social involvement.
The
Islamic Emirate hasn't recently remarked on the topic of reopening schools for
females above the sixth grade, although it has previously said that they are
working on a plan to reopen schools and universities for girls.

Girls Forced
To Scavenge And Engage In Strenuous Labour In Kabul, Due To Poverty

The dire
escalation of hunger and poverty in Afghanistan has compelled young girls and
children to undertake hard work along the streets of Kabul. These girls, who
should rightfully be enjoying their right to education and play, are now forced
to scavenge and engage in strenuous labour. Fatima and Sana, among many others,
must search for menial jobs and sift through trash in the scorching summer heat
to secure their daily sustenance.
Ten-year-old
Fatima and her two siblings, aged twelve and eight, scour the streets and lanes
of Kabul as child scavengers. Despite their efforts, they earn 20 to 30
Afghanis daily from collecting garbage, which does not even support their daily
life.
Struggling
to provide for their families, these children are denied education. Fatima,
from a family of thirteen, has a father who is a shoemaker, a sick mother, and
younger sisters of her age.
The
resurgence of the Taliban administration in Afghanistan has severely harmed
people’s lives, particularly women and children. Many children, like Fatima,
now suffer due to poverty and the country’s dire state.
Highlighting
Fatima’s case is crucial, but she is not alone. The United Nations Children’s
Fund (UNICEF) reports a distressing situation for Afghan children, with around
1.6 million engaged in arduous labour, emphasizing their alarming conditions.
A recent
Save the Children Organization report highlights dire conditions for Afghan
children under the Taliban’s rule. After two years in power, children risk
death due to hunger and strenuous labour.
Fatima
reveals her daily struggle for survival. She says: “Since I left here, I’m
going to sleep.” If there is tea and bread, I will eat; if not, I will sleep
without food.”
Fatima
explains that her mother’s mental health issues remain untreated due to their
financial constraints. Despite Fatima and her brothers collecting what little
they can, they lack the means to afford treatment for their mother’s condition.
Afghanistan
is one of the worst possible places for children. Fatima says about her small
dreams: “I would like toys, books and many clothes.”
The UN
report highlights a 17% increase in girls receiving less food than boys after
the Taliban took control of the country.
Sana, a
fourteen-year-old girl, works at a Kabul restaurant from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Given their impoverished circumstances, she is deeply concerned about her and
her sisters’ future.
Sana’s
father has passed away, and she lives with her mother and six sisters. The
responsibility of covering family expenses falls on Sana and her siblings. They
have resorted to working in restaurants as educational and job opportunities
have been denied.
These
children are grappling with concerns over their family’s uncertain future. They
wish to be educated and have a bright future like other girls.

Sadat, an Afghan YouTuber, killed in Kabul
By Fidel
Rahmati- August 24, 2023
On
Thursday, the Taliban officially confirmed the death of Hoora Sadat, an Afghan
YouTuber, who was killed in Kabul earlier this week.
Khalid Zadran,
a spokesperson for the Taliban, said on a social media platform X that the
incident occurred three days ago in the Kabul district.
Zadran
revealed that authorities have apprehended two individuals, one woman, in
connection with the incident.
The Taliban
official also added that the investigation into the YouTuber’s death is
currently ongoing.
This
incident is the most recent one in an unfolding sequence of targeted killings
witnessed across the country following the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban.
Simultaneously,
the persistent and ongoing situation has undoubtedly triggered a heightened
concern, bringing urgent attention to the broader context of safety and
security prevailing throughout the country.
Sadat’s
family denied providing any comments on the matter, respecting their privacy
during this difficult time.
She
passionately highlighted various social issues in her vlogs, skillfully
portraying the details that shape people’s lives and emphasizing how society is

Iranian
Journalist Summoned for Sharing Photos of Women Dancing Without Hijabs
24, 2023
The
prosecutor’s office in Iran has charged a journalist in Tehran for publishing
images that featured women dancing and not wearing the hijab.
Javad
Heydarian revealed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was summoned by
prosecutors in Tehran and charged with "spreading obscenities through the
publication of images depicting dancing and unveiling at the LidoMa cultural
festival."
The
LidoMa Festival, a recurring celebration held in August by Iran’s Lur people,
took place in the conference hall of Milad Tower, the tallest tower in Iran.
"Amid
the celebration, Lur people and fellow compatriots gathered at Milad Tower's
hall. Notably, many women were without hijabs, and as they danced, the hall's
power was unexpectedly cut off," Heydarian explained on X.
Since
nationwide protests last year in the aftermath of the death of a 22-year-old
Iranian woman while in police custody, the country’s judicial authorities have
targeted journalists who have reported on the protests in any capacity.
Iran
ranks 177 out of 180 countries on the 2023 World Press Freedom Index, with 1
being the best environment for media. Monitor group Reporters Without Borders,
which compiled the index, says Iran is one of the "most repressive
countries" for journalists and one of the biggest jailers of journalists.

Malka
Leifer: Israeli ex-principal jailed for sexually abusing Australian students
24
August 2023
By
Tiffanie Turnbull
BBC
News, Sydney
An
Israeli former principal will spend up to 15 years in jail for sexually
assaulting two students at an ultra-Orthodox Jewish school in Australia.
Malka
Leifer raped and indecently assaulted sisters Dassi Erlich and Elly Sapper
between 2003 and 2007, a jury found in April.
The
56-year-old was found not guilty of abusing a third sister, Nicole Meyer.
Leifer's
sentencing ends a 15-year push for the mother-of-eight to face justice.
She had
pleaded not guilty to more than two dozen charges and spent years fighting
extradition from Israel. But in 2021, an Israeli judge found she had faked
mental illness to avoid facing the courts and ordered she be sent to Melbourne.
During a
lengthy trial, the jury heard evidence that Leifer had abused the sisters in
locked classrooms, on school camps, and at the head teacher's home.
Detailing
the 18 charges on Thursday, judge Mark Gamble called her offending
"insidious".
Leifer
was a revered figure at the Adass Israel School, awed almost like a rabbi, he
said. And the sisters were starved of love and in need of protection -
emotionally and physically abused at home by their mother and completely
uneducated about sex.
"This
case is striking for just how vulnerable these victims were, and for the
calculating way in which the offender, Mrs Leifer, took callous advantage...
for her own perverse sexual gratification," the judge said.
Addressing
"powerful" victim impact statements from Ms Sapper and Ms Erlich in
which they spoke about lasting feelings of guilt, shame and fear, Judge Gamble
stressed they were "completely innocent" of the "predatory
behaviour" of Leifer.
"It
is she and she alone who should feel guilty and ashamed for what
occurred."
Considering
the time she has already served in prison, Leifer will be eligible for parole
in June 2029.
Speaking
alongside her sisters outside court, Ms Erlich said the sentence was the end of
a long and traumatic chapter of their lives.
"We
are here today because we did not give up," she said.
"And
while we know that the onus of fighting for justice should not be up to
survivors, this fight was never just for us.
"To
any other survivors in this nightmare: you are never alone, we are all behind
you."
Now
Leifer's trial has concluded, police have reopened an investigation into her
attempts to evade justice.
The
headteacher fled to Israel in 2008 after accusations were raised against her,
reportedly with the help of members of the school board. She was arrested at
Australia's request in 2014, but two years later an Israeli court suspended her
extradition, ruling her to be mentally unfit for trial.
But
undercover private investigators later filmed her shopping and depositing a
cheque at a bank, leading Israeli authorities to investigate and re-arrest her
in February 2018. A judge there said she had been "impersonating someone with
mental illness".

Islamic
extremists abduct 42 women in Nigeria, demand ransom
August
24, 2023
At least
42 women have been abducted by Islamic extremist rebels during an attack in
northeast Nigeria’s Borno state, locals told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The
rebels attacked the women as they gathered firewood in the Jere district of
Borno, which is the epicenter of a 14-year-long insurgency launched by the
extremist group known as Boko Haram, according to a member of the Civilian
Joint Task Force local security group who identified himself as Abba.
Locals
also said the victims were from a camp for internally displaced persons in the
neighboring Mafa district and had been selling firewood to boost their income
as economic hardship in Nigeria under the new president bites harder.
Africa

KachallaMaidugu,
a government spokesman in the district, confirmed the incident that occurred on
Tuesday but was only reported late Wednesday. "We received information
yesterday that 46 women were abducted, but only four were allowed to return
home while 42 were held back," said Maidugu.
He also
said the rebels have demanded a ransom of $55 for each woman though the locals
were negotiating for less amounts of money to pay for the women's freedom.
