Sharmila Tagore Revealed That She Converted To Islam As She Got Married To Tiger Pataudi

Jan 15, 2025,

Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan's (fondly called Tiger Pataudi) love story was one to remember as they faced many hurdles together and opposition from the society as they got married. Both Pataudi and Sharmila belonged to different religions and in that era, interfaith marriages were not easy. In an interview, Sharmila had revealed that she converted to Islam. She had expressed her thoughts on it.

She said during a chat with Simi Garewal, "It wasn’t easy nor was it very difficult. It had to be faced and understood. You couldn’t be very flippant about it." She said, adding that she wasn’t particularly religious before the conversion. “Now, I think I know more about Hinduism and Islam."

She revealed that Tiger had suggested the name Ayesha for her. Sharmila had also recalled her first meeting with her mom-in-law, Nawab Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal. She said, “The first time I met Amma, I was, of course, very nervous. She asked, ‘What do you think about my son?’ I said, ‘I like him.’ She then asked, ‘What do you intend to do?’ I replied, ‘I don’t know yet; I just met him. I am very fond of him, and at this point, you have known him for longer.’"

Sharmila and Sajida Sultan built a bond which was based on very healthy mutual respect, she said. In an earlier interview, the actress had also shared how they were getting death threats when she married Pataudi. She said during a chat with Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story, Sharmila recalled the hostility. “In Kolkata, when I was getting married, my parents were getting telegrams saying that bullets shall speak. And Tiger’s family was also getting… they were getting a little worried," she revealed. Despite the tension, the wedding and reception went smoothly. “Nothing untoward happened," Sharmila said.

Woman SP Rashim Jehangir: Women Moharrars Posted To Nine Police Stations In Mansehrato Eliminate Gender-Based Offences

January 15, 2025

MANSEHRA: For the first time, the police have posted women constables as Moharrars to nine of the 17 police stations in Mansehra district, insisting the initiative will enable women to lodge complaints without hesitation.

“The remaining police stations, too, will get women Moharrars soon,” district police officer Shafiullah Khan Gandapur told the newly-posted women Moharrars during a function on Tuesday.

Woman superintendent of police (central) Rashim Jehangir was also in attendance.

The DPO said the police were introducing a modern policing system to eliminate gender-based offences, including violence, and provide women complainants with a friendly environment to file FIRs freely.

He said the incidence of cybercrimes against women was on the rise but most victims showed reluctance in reporting those cases.

Mr Gandapur said the posting of women moharrars to police stations would improve the situation.

“Women complainants can share their issues with women moharrars without hesitation,” he said.

The DPO directed all station house officers in the district to help and support women moharrars in performing their duties well.

Meanwhile, the police appointed Saif Sajid and Mubashar Khan as sub-inspectors after their fathers were martyred during the anti-terrorism operations.

The appointments of Saif Sajid and Mubashar Khan came on the orders of Deputy Inspector General of Police Hazara Region Nasir Mehmood Satti on the police’s recruitment quota for the sons of fallen officials.

Sajid Khan and Chanzeb lost lives while fighting terrorism.

Provincial police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan Gandapur recently increased the employment quota for the sons of martyrs from five per cent to12.5 per cent.

CATTLE PEN GUTTED: Around a dozen animals, including cows and goats, perished after a cattle pen caught fire in the Kalgan Morr area here on Tuesday.

“Five cows and six goats were killed by the fire,” an official of Rescue 1122 told reporters.

He said the incident occurred as the fire, lit to keep the cattle pen warm, spread. It took Rescue 1122 fire tenders and workers around an hour to extinguish the blaze.

An official of Rescue 1122 said the service had repeatedly warned people against burning fires at night or leaving gas heaters on, as the cases of suffocation and fires had increased in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party divisional president Hazara Malik Mohammad Farooq on Tuesday removed the party’s district president and general secretary in Mansehra from their respective offices.

“I have removed both president Malik Mumtaz and general secretary Maqsood Khan over local leaders’ complaints about their misconduct and favouritism in appointments. Their successors will be notified by our [PPP] central chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari within two weeks,” Mr Farooq told reporters here.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan's wife and former first lady Bushra Bibi on Tuesday lamented her legal woes and said that she had lost faith in the courts.

Bushra's remarks came during hearing of a case in an anti-terrorism court (ATC), presided over by Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra, which pertained to allegations of ramming a vehicle into Rangers' personnel.

During the hearing, the judge and Bushra engaged in conversation with the former saying: "It has taken some time, but legal protocols have been followed."

To this, the former first lady replied: "That is not an issue, but we have lost faith in the courts".

Disagreeing, Judge Sipra assured: "It is not like that everywhere. The justice system, despite its flaws, is functioning. If it collapses, society itself will cease to exist. You have appeared before me in other hearings as well."

Bushra further highlighted her concerns regarding the judicial process, recounting an instance during a trial where a judge's blood pressure rose to 200, yet he proceeded to pronounce a verdict against them.

"There is law in the country but no justice. The PTI founder is imprisoned for upholding the supremacy of the Constitution. What we have endured has completely shattered our faith in the law," said the PTI founder's wife.

Following the arguments, the court granted Bushra interim bail in the case registered at the Ramna Police Station, extending the relief until February 7.

Bail in 13 cases

In another hearing at the ATC in the federal capital, a court approved interim bail for Bushra in 13 cases related to the D-Chowk protests.

During the hearing, the former first lady and her legal team appeared before the court. The presiding judge expressed displeasure over obtaining her signature and thumb impression on plain paper, saying: "You demand VIP protocol everywhere, but that is not possible. I did not keep you waiting. I was dictating another order but prioritised your bail hearing. The court's order will require the defendant’s signature and thumb impression when issued."

The court was informed that 13 cases against Bushra had been registered at various police stations in Islamabad regarding the D-Chowk protests. These include three cases at the Secretariat Police Station, two each at Margalla and Karachi Company Police Stations, and one each at the Ramna, Tarnol, Kohsar, Aabpara, and Khanna Police Stations.

The court subsequently granted interim bail to her in all 13 cases until February 7, against surety bonds of Rs5,000 each. Additionally, the police were directed to present the complete records of these cases at the next hearing, which has been adjourned.

Scholars’ Gathering Affirms Islamic Consensus on Women’s Right to Education

15 January 2025

Bringing together representatives from Fiqh academies, organizations, councils, and religious committees, along with a distinguished assembly of muftis and senior scholars from various schools of thought and sects across the Islamic world, the Scholars’ Session reaffirmed the enduring consensus in Islam—both historically and contemporarily—on the legitimate right of women to education.

The exclusive Scholars’ Session, part of the “Girls’ Education in Muslim Communities” initiative, was held in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, under the leadership of Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars.

At the conclusion of the extensive scholarly dialogue, which lasted several hours, all participants unanimously affirmed—with enlightened judgment—the Islamic consensus, both historically and contemporarily, on the legitimate right of women to education.

This consensus is based on the comprehensive Islamic texts concerning the matter, affirming that women possess the same rights as their male counterparts to education at any age, level, or field of study, provided it aligns with Islamic teachings.

The discussion underscored that this right is rooted in the fundamental Islamic obligation of seeking knowledge, which applies equally to both genders, in accordance with Islamic teachings.

The dialogue included a thorough refutation of all misconceptions surrounding women's education, whether these were complete or partial. Participants emphasized that their religious declaration is intended for all individuals, institutions, and both public and private entities across the Islamic world and minority communities, adhering to the appropriate Islamic methodology for such declarations.

The scholars’ statements praised the comprehensive principles related to the legitimate empowerment of women in general, and their education in particular, as outlined in the Charter of Makkah and the Charter of Building Bridges between Islamic Schools of Thought and Sects.

Both international conferences, which issued these charters, were supported by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

Iran: UN experts alarmed as Supreme Court upholds death sentence of Kurdish woman activist

14 January 2025

“The charges against Ms. Pakhshan Azizi do not meet the threshold of ‘most serious crimes’ required by international law for the death penalty,” the Human Rights Council-appointed experts stated. “Her death sentence constitutes a serious violation of international human rights law.”

Solitary confinement

Ms. Azizi was arrested in Tehran on 4 August 2023, by Iranian intelligence services and held in solitary confinement in the notorious Evin Prison for five months.

On 23 July 2024, the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced her to death for “armed rebellion against the state” and “membership of opposition groups,” along with a four-year prison term for alleged membership of in the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK).

The Supreme Court upheld the death sentence last week.

“Ms. Azizi's arrest and sentencing appear to be solely related to her legitimate work as a social worker, including her support for refugees in Iraq and Syria,” the independent experts noted.

Reports indicate that Ms. Azizi was subjected to severe psychological and physical torture in solitary confinement to extract a confession. She was also denied access to family visits and legal representation of her choice.

Family members detained

Several members of Azizi's family were temporarily detained and have faced national security charges, presumably to pressure her to confess, the experts noted.

"The use of torture to extract confessions and the denial of fair trial rights render the death sentence against Ms. Azizi arbitrary in nature," the experts said.

The experts highlighted that the number of executions in Iran surpassed 900 in 2024, with an increase in the number of women put to death.

They have called for Iran to stop executions that violate international law and fundamental human rights.

End targeting of Kurdish women activists

"We are deeply concerned by the specific targeting of Kurdish women activists with politically motivated charges," they said.

"Ms. Azizi's prosecution reflects the heightened persecution that minority women activists face in Iran and the continued intention to punish and silence them by creating a climate of fear."

The experts urged Iranian authorities to revoke Ms. Azizi's death sentence, investigate allegations of torture and denial of fair trial rights, and end the harassment and targeting of women activists in Iran.

Special Rapporteurs and Working Groups who report on and monitor allegations of rights abuses are not UN staff and are independent of any government or organization. They serve in their individual capacity and receive no salary.
