NEW DELHI: Pakistani presenter Zainab
Abbas, part of the ICC digital team covering the ODI World Cup, on Monday left
India after facing backlash on social media over her alleged anti-India posts
in the past but the sport's governing body insisted that she left the country
due to personal reasons.
Zainab left India from Hyderabad where
she was deputed to cover Pakistan's three World Cup games in the city.
The 35-year-old was present at the Rajiv
Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad for Pakistan's World Cup opener
against the Netherlands on October 6.
Posts from her unverified X account,
formerly Twitter, had gone viral after she announced that she would be covering
the ICC mega event in India.
As speculation on social media
intensified over her departure from India in the middle of the tournament, the
International Cricket Council clarified that Zainab was not deported from the
host country.
"Zainab has not been deported, she
has left for personal reasons," an ICC spokesperson told PTI.
The presenter, who arrived in Hyderabad
last week, was supposed to travel to cities where Pakistan are scheduled to
play, including Bengaluru, Chennai and Ahmedabad.
Former Pakistan players Rameez Raja and
Waqar Younis are in India as part of the commentary panel for the ODI
showpiece, which began on October 5 and will end on November 19.
The Pakistan cricket team got a rousing
reception at the Hyderabad airport on September 27, marking its arrival to the
country after seven years.
The cricketers, including skipper Babar
Azam, have acknowledged the overwhelming support they have been getting in
India since their arrival.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan
was conferred an honorary doctorate by Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday,
becoming the first woman to be bestowed with the honour.
President Hassan arrived in India on a
four-day visit on Sunday. She has been awarded the honorary degree for her
pivotal role in fostering stronger India-Tanzania relations, promoting economic
diplomacy and achieving success in regional integration and multilateralism.
Hassan, the first woman president of
Tanzania, went down memory lane to share her journey -- from being born in a
humble family in an African village to becoming the president of her country.
''The world says there is no midway in
falling in love with India, be it an Indian song, an Indian movie, or Indian
cuisine, it is very difficult to resist an Indian charm. I experienced it when
I came to India for the first time in 1998 to study in Hyderabad,'' she said in
her acceptance speech. ''I stand here as a family member of Jawaharlal Nehru
University and no more as a visiting guest. This is what makes India
irresistible. This is what makes India the incredible India,'' she added.
Hassan noted that India has always been a shoulder to lean on in the struggle
against colonialism.
''In our struggle against colonialism,
India has always been a shoulder to lean on. Together, we can be a formidable
voice championing effective positive changes. This honour comes with
responsibilities and expectations. My heart is beaming with gratitude by this
profound recognition bestowed upon me by the great university. I extend my
appreciation for deeming me worthy of this degree … my first by a foreign
university,'' she added. The event was attended by Union Minister for Education
and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of
External Affairs S Jaishankar.
''Economic ties between our two
countries have always been a strong pillar. Our trade relations with Tanzania
date back several centuries, when traders from the western coast of India first
travelled to east Africa along the maritime route for trade and commerce.
Despite the global disruption and challenges posed by the (COVID-19) pandemic,
our bilateral trade has witnessed strong growth from both sides,'' Jaishankar said.
Education Minister Pradhan said India is implementing the new National
Education Policy, the foundation of which is built on the pillars of access,
equality, quality, affordability and accountability.
''Tanzania is a key African partner of
India and we count on your support to amplify the aspirations of the Global
South, especially on education and human resource development. Skill-focused
and market-aligned higher education are to be delivered to the youths of both
the countries in a collaborative manner,'' Pradhan said.
The minister highlighted that India has
a vibrant higher education ecosystem with 55,000 institutions, 42 million
students and 1.6 million teachers, which needs to be further strengthened with
an aspirational National Education Policy that is bringing transformative
reforms.
The Tanzanian president received
training under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme
at the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj in Hyderabad.
ITEC is a capacity-building programme offered by the Ministry of External
Affairs under which officials and civilians receive training in the defence
sector.
Addressing the occasion, Jawaharlal
Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor SantishreeDhulipudi Pandit called the
convocation a display of ''nari shakti'' and women-led development in
''Amritkaal'' and congratulated Jaishankar and Pradhan for India's stride
towards a successful G20 and National Education Policy, 2020.
''We celebrate 'nari shakti' today.
Women-led development in 'Amritkaal'. Tanzania is a great friend of India and
JNU is happy to be a part of this ceremony,'' Pandit, the institution's first
woman vice-chancellor, said.
She also invited President Hassan to a
lecture series at JNU's Centre for African Studies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday
held wide-ranging talks with Hassan, with a focus on boosting overall bilateral
ties.
Before the talks, External Affairs
Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said Hasan's visit is an opportunity to
take the long-standing ties between the two countries to ''new levels''.
President Hassan will also participate
in a business and investment forum in Delhi later on Tuesday.

Hamas Attack: Sister Of Israeli TV
Personality Killed In 'Execution-Style'
Oct 10, 2023
NEW DELHI: In a tragic and heart
wrenching incident at the Tribe of Nova trance music festival near the Gaza
Strip border, a 27-year-old Israeli woman, Mapal Adam, was killed
"execution style" by Hamas gunmen. Mapal, hiding under a truck, hoped
to survive by playing dead. But she was eventually discovered by the assailants.
Her sister, Maayan Adam, a television host, shared the heartbreaking news on
Instagram, describing Mapal's final moments and expressing the family's immense
grief.
“On Saturday afternoon, in this idyllic
setting, Mapal, our baby, hid underneath a truck and pretended as if she were
dead,” Ma’ayan wrote on Instagram.
“She held out for hours and didn’t move
until terrorists killed her execution style.”
Mapal was with her boyfriend, Roey, who
sustained back injuries but survived the attack. Ma’ayan revealed that Mapal
and Roey had recently moved in together and were deeply in love. Witnesses
recounted the horrifying assault, where Hamas gunmen stormed the concert area,
firing into the crowd and taking hostages.
Mapal also has a record of serving in
the Israeli military. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she expressed her
gratitude for the opportunity to serve her country, saying: "One army, 72
years, 23,816 martyrs. Thank you for granting me the honor of serving my
nation."
The music's rhythm melded with the sound
of gunfire as militants approached the festival, where hundreds of young
partygoers were gathered. Videos circulating online captured the horrifying
scenes of revelers being showered with bullets as they desperately tried to
flee for their lives.
Israeli emergency services recovered at
least 260 bodies from the site, and the surprise Hamas assault resulted in the
deaths of more than 800 soldiers and civilians. In response, Israeli military
operations were launched in Gaza, leading to casualties among Palestinians in
the area. The tragic incident left families shattered and communities in
mourning.

Herat’s earthquake survivors, mostly
women, face trauma
Fidel Rahmati
October 9, 2023
An employee from a relief organization
in Herat province said that the situation for earthquake survivors is terrible.
Most of the victims are women and children who are still in shock from the
disaster.
This relief worker, who assists in the
counselling and distribution of aid to the affected in the Zindajan district of
Herat, emphasized that women and children make up the most significant number
of victims of this incident.
He, who preferred not to mention his
name in the report, added that women are in a poor mental and physical state
because most pregnant women have lost their babies due to nervous shock and
lack of health services.
According to him, the loss of loved
ones, the destruction of homes, and the fear of the earthquake have caused
women to experience nervous shock.
This relief worker stated that various
institutions and the general public have gathered a significant amount of aid,
including food, medicine, blankets, and clothing, for vulnerable people, and
these aids are distributed to the people through the Department of Immigrants
and the Department of Incidents.
According to reports, due to the
powerful earthquake that struck parts of western Afghanistan on Saturday, more
than 2,000 people lost their lives, and over 10,000 others were injured.
Furthermore, this earthquake, followed
by several aftershocks in the past two days, led to the destruction of 13
villages and the collapse of hundreds of residential houses in the districts of
Herat province.
Additionally, sources from Herat
province emphasize that most victims of this incident are concerned about their
future and loved ones. Quoting one of the earthquake victims, it added: “We
lost our homes, the lives we struggled for years to build have been demolished,
and with winter coming in a month, life will become even more challenging with
orphaned children.”
It should be noted that Dr Rangin Dadfar
Spanta, a prominent political figure from the former Afghan government, has
also reported a higher female casualty rate compared to males. He emphasized
that the Taliban administration is so organized that even in natural disasters,
gender apartheid is evident.
According to him, most women have lost
their lives in the aftershocks because they were not allowed to leave their
homes.
This is happening as humanitarian aid
for earthquake-affected individuals in Herat province has increased, and those
attempting to provide assistance are concerned about the misappropriation of
funds, and it is not reaching vulnerable individuals.
On the other hand, a group of women in
Kabul, numbering nearly twenty, have organized a campaign to collect
humanitarian aid for the earthquake victims in Herat.
These women have expressed concerns
about the transparency of the aid distribution process to the
earthquake-affected in Herat and are calling on the Taliban administration to
ensure accountability.
Fazila Surosh, a civil activist and one
of the members of this campaign, tells Khaama Press News Agency in an interview
that they are seeking to help the families who have lost all their belongings
and are neglected by the global community. She urges others to fulfil their
humanitarian duty and assist in delivering humanitarian aid to Herat province.

Hijab a tool for US, allies to pursue
interventionist agenda against Iran: Journalist
09 October 2023
Maryam Qarehgozlou
The United States and its allies use the
Hijab as a pretext to carry out their interventionist actions against Iran by
provoking the Iranian youth against their government, says an American
journalist.
Fiorella Isabel, an American journalist
and geopolitical analyst presently based in Moscow, told the Press TV Website
in an interview that the West attempts to focus on the Hijab to develop a
narrative that the Islamic Republic is a “brutal dictatorship” led by “a
terrorist regime.”
“This is going along with an
interventionist foreign policy that the US has against Iran, with their ally,
Israel, of course, they don’t want Iran to have nuclear weapons, yet they have
nuclear weapons. They don’t want Iran to have its national sovereignty and decide
for itself,” she stated.
Isabel was in Iran to attend the first
edition of the International Khorsheed Media Festival which brought together
100 women journalists from more than 40 countries.
The RT International journalist said
women in Iran are not oppressed, debunking the Western propaganda, and noted
that the difference between Muslim and Western women is only “cultural.”
“In the West, we value appearance and
sexuality as traits of femininity rather than what other countries value and
this is something that’s just cultural and it doesn’t mean we should impose our
own beliefs on other countries,” she said in a conversation with the Press TV
website.
She slammed the Western media for
presenting a distorted picture of the Islamic Republic of Iran and portraying
Iranian women as oppressed and voiceless.
Isabel said during her brief stay in
Iran, she visited the major cities of Tehran and Mashhad and noticed that not
all women were wearing the exact same attire and no one faced any abuse for
that.
“In fact, in the United States, we value
things differently. We express ourselves with the way we dress, but oftentimes
when it comes to the economic development when it comes to education, we are
actually being left behind and we are actually not uplifted in the way we
should be,” she remarked.
“So what I saw in Iran was the reverse,
women are uplifted. Women have a lot of decision-making power, and they have
zero qualms about letting people know when they are upset. So, if the women of
Iran were upset, I think they would let the world know themselves.”
Isabel explained how she has a newfound
respect for women who choose to believe in Islam and who wear the Hijab because
they want to.
“I’m not religious, but that doesn’t
mean that I can’t appreciate this culture for what it is, and as a guest, I
think it’s wise to respect a country’s laws,” she asserted, pointing to
religious tolerance.
Isabel also criticized West’s
“condescending” manner in telling sovereign countries how to run their affairs,
while they disregard the brutality unleashed on people in Palestine and Yemen.
“I’m against this condescending idea in
the West that we need to tell people what’s better for them. And they are
treating women the same way; they think they need to save these women,” she
said.
“And it’s not the reality, because if we
really wanted to save people, we would really focus on Yemenis, Palestinian
people. And that’s just not a focus because it’s not advantageous to the
political desires of the West at this moment.”
On the Khorsheed Media Festival, Isbael
said she hasn’t seen a festival like that in the West.
“The festival showed us the intellect,
the determination, and the talent of Iranian women that many of us have been
told doesn’t exist because you wear a Hijab so that you are oppressed,” she
said.
To present the real narrative of how
women are actually treated in Iran, Isabel said Iranian journalists should have
as many connections with Western people as they can.
“I still get censored, but not as much
as you all do. I know the censorship is tough. It’s difficult in social media,
but as you saw it has been a powerful tool that can be used to break barriers
in spite of the censorship,” she emphasized.
