Hundreds Of Women Arrested In KabulDespite Most Of Them Wearing The Islamic Veil

July 20, 2025

Taliban forces have carried out a new wave of arrests of dozens of young women in Kabul, sparking unanimous reactions and condemnations.

---------

The arrests, which occurred primarily in the neighborhoods of Qala-e Fathullah, Kote-e Sangi, Dasht-e-Barchi, and Shahr-e-Naw, raise serious questions about human rights and the condition of women in Afghanistan.

Between Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18, by order of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, several young women were taken away—literally seized—without specific charges. According to local sources and direct testimonies gathered by Afghanistan International and witnesses on site, the arrests took place on the street, even in the city center. An eyewitness reported that the Taliban used particular violence during the operations, partly due to the absence of female officers.

This new wave follows by just a few days a similar raid on Wednesday, July 15, in Shahr-e-Naw, where nearly 100 young women were arrested. Their families, who still do not know where they have been taken, are very worried; they reported that the women were arrested despite most of them wearing the Islamic veil, taken from streets, markets, minibuses, and even hospitals, and transferred to detention centers without any reasons being provided.

A video released by Afghanistan International shows several terrified women surrounded by the Taliban, one of them shouting: “You have deprived us of life, education, and school; what more do you want? Fear God!” Some of the women arrested on Wednesday were released after one night, but only after their families provided written guarantees.

So far, the Taliban have not provided any official explanation for these mass detentions. Simultaneously with the arrests, Taliban agents have reportedly conducted inspections in restaurants in Shahr-e-Naw, Kabul, where the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice regularly checks dining areas and orders women to cover their faces in public.

These events have triggered strong condemnations. The Freedom Front, which has targeted Taliban fighters and officials in recent months, announced that the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice will now be a target of “legitimate attacks.”

Prominent figures such as former Afghan Interior Minister Mohammad Omar Daudzai have also sharply criticized the Taliban’s “arbitrary” actions, calling them proof of their “unreliability.” Former jihadist leader Abdurrab Rasool Sayyaf has also strongly condemned the detention of women and girls, deeming it unjustified and contrary to “human decency” and “Afghan pride.”

These arrests are part of a broader framework of repression and violence against women in Afghanistan. The case of Marina Sadat is emblematic: a 23-year-old student arrested in December 2023 in the Dasht-e-Barchi area for “improper use of the hijab.” After 21 days of searching by her family, her tortured body was found with evident signs of brutal violence. Marina’s family continues to receive threats, highlighting the brutality and long-term consequences of Taliban actions.

The systematic removal of women from public life through arbitrary detentions, restrictions, and violence is a clear manifestation of the gender apartheid afflicting the country—a deliberate, harsh, and continuous problem that demands clear condemnation and immediate action from the international community.

US Attorney Alina Habba Strongly Condemned Indian-Origin Doctor's Alleged Actions

------------

An Indian-origin doctor based in New Jersey, Dr. RiteshKalra, 51, is facing serious accusations of soliciting sexual favours from patients in exchange for prescriptions and defrauding New Jersey Medicaid. These allegations have led to his immediate prohibition from practising medicine and prescribing medication, with his medical practice required to shut down while the case is pending. Dr. Kalra is currently under home arrest.

According to the US Attorney's office, several of Kalra's former employees reported that female patients complained of sexual touching and demands for sexual favours, including oral sex, to obtain prescriptions. One patient even described being sexually assaulted on multiple occasions, including forced anal sex, during clinical appointments.

Further accusations include Dr. Kalra continuing to provide opioid prescriptions to a patient who was incarcerated and had no contact with him. He is also alleged to have billed for in-person visits and counselling sessions that never occurred, the US Attorney's office further reported.

US Attorney Alina Habba strongly condemned Kalra's alleged actions, stating, “Physicians hold a position of profound responsibility—but as alleged, Dr. Kalra used that position to fuel addiction, exploit vulnerable patients for sex, and defraud New Jersey's public healthcare program.”

She emphasised that by exchanging prescriptions for sexual favours and billing Medicaid for "ghost appointments," he not only violated the law but also endangered lives.

Habba concluded by asserting that their office will "continue to pursue those who turn their medical licenses into tools for personal gain and sexual gratification."

"When we seek medical advice and treatment from doctors, we have to assume they have our best interests in mind. This investigation, conducted by the FBI and our partners, illustrates that Dr. Kalra had little regard for actually taking care of his patients. As alleged, he instead used them for his sexual gratification and, in the process, defrauded the state of New Jersey. A patient's relationship and trust in a physician, while at their most vulnerable, is not something to be exploited for personal gain. We are asking anyone who may be a victim or knows someone who was treated by Dr. Kalra to get in touch with our office," stated Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy.

If found guilty, Kalra could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count of illegal drug distribution and up to 10 years for each count of healthcare fraud. The penalties also include fines of up to $1 million for each drug-related charge and at least $250,000 for each fraud-related charge.

Jeffrey Epstein's Ex Girlfriend Stacey Williams Describes Trump-Epstein As ‘Bro’ And ‘Wingman’

Jul 20, 2025

Stacey Williams, former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein has claimed that the disgraced financier and Donald Trump were “best friends” and “up to no good” during their long-standing friendship, as the US president continues to distance himself from the Epstein scandal.

Williams had briefly dated Epstein for several months in the 1990s. She made these remarks in an interview with CNN aired Friday evening. “That was his bro, that was his wingman,” she said, describing Trump’s close relationship with Epstein.

“The only friend that he would mention every time we saw each other or had a phone conversation was Donald,” she said. “They were very close and they were up to no good.”

Her comments come as the department of justice continues to review documents related to the Epstein case and just days after the DOJ asked a court to unseal grand jury transcripts in the Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell investigations.

In a previous interview with The Guardian in October, Williams publicly accused Trump of groping her in Epstein’s presence. Trump has denied the allegations. He has also threatened to sue The Wall Street Journal over its report on a letter allegedly bearing his signature in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2003 birthday album, calling the document “fake.”

During the interview, CNN host Brianna Keilar read the contents of the birthday letter. Trump has dismissed the note as “fake” and claimed he never “wrote a picture” in his life, a phrase Williams mocked in her reaction. “What, are you kidding me? I know what they were up to together. It happened to me.”

Williams also referenced a postcard she says Trump sent to her agent in 1993, shortly after the alleged assault. According to The Guardian, the card showed an aerial view of Mar-a-Lago and included a handwritten message: “Stacey – Your home away from home. Love Donald.”

Recalling the alleged incident in Trump Tower, Williams said Epstein led her to Trump’s office, where Trump allegedly began groping her while carrying on a casual conversation with Epstein.

“They were back and forth smiling and grinning and carrying on a conversation while Donald ran his hands all over me. Assistants were walking back and forth while the incident occurred", she said.

“If it happens in a dark alleyway, you defend yourself. But when it's hidden in its brazenness like that, which is Donald Trump's forte, you go into shock,” Williams told the network. “So I froze and it was over very quickly. It was a few minutes.”

As she and Epstein got into an elevator to leave, she realized “Jeffrey's energy had changed.” Williams recalled: “He was, he was like seething, he was enraged. He wouldn’t make eye contact with me.”

After the encounter, Williams said Epstein blamed the incident on her. She remembered: “He looked at me and he just started yelling at me saying, ‘Why did you let him do that?’”

She had the same thought herself. “I remember thinking like, ‘Why did I?’ I felt like I was coming back into my body at that moment and I was confused,” she said.

When she first came forward with her assault accusations, Williams said she believed the incident was “coordinated” between the two men.

Trump’s friendship with Epstein began in the late 1980s and lasted through the early 2000s. His contact details, as well as those of First Lady Melania Trump were included in Epstein’s infamous leaked address books. Flight records show Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet at least seven times.

Their friendship reportedly ended around 2004 over a property dispute. In 2005, the FBI began investigating Epstein for child sex trafficking. He pleaded guilty to a state charge of soliciting sex from a minor in 2008, as reported by the Independent.

Trump distanced himself from his former friend after Epstein’s arrest in 2019, during his first term as president. He has denied any wrongdoing related to the case.

Afghan moms smashing Japan's language barrier for sake of kids

July 20, 2025

Mainichi Japan

CHIBA, Japan (Kyodo) -- A long-term Afghan resident of Japan has set up a free language school to help her more newly arrived countrywomen stay connected with their children, who now prefer to converse in Japanese rather than their ancestral language.

With nearly four decades of experience as an interpreter in legal proceedings, SedekaEto has established the school to support Afghan mothers who fear their children, born or raised in Japan, are becoming increasingly distant.

"While children learn to speak Japanese at school, mothers remain unable to understand it. Children then forget the Afghan language," said Eto, 67, who heads the nonprofit association Eagle Afghan for the Reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Chiba, which borders Tokyo, is home to approximately 40 percent of some 6,000 Afghan residents in Japan, many of whom fled to the country as refugees after the Taliban regained control in 2021.

Eto's school was established in 2023 via the nonprofit and holds classes every Saturday. More than 120 Afghans are registered and learn Japanese there.

Eto came to Japan from Afghanistan in 1983 and married a Japanese man. Working as a legal interpreter, she witnessed interrogations and court proceedings and became aware of an increase in shoplifting and other crimes committed by foreign youth.

Communication between Afghan parents and their children can be limited to simple Japanese. A mother with five children of primary and middle school age reports that her children speak to each other in Japanese, making it impossible for her to understand them.

Children are unable to make themselves understood when they talk to their parents about problems at school and other complex issues, while many mothers say they are also unable to engage at parent-teacher conferences.

There are also cases in which children, when scolded by their fathers or older brothers in the Afghan language, do not understand and are beaten for not listening, Eto said.

"I thought it was imperative that they be able to communicate in the same language," said Eto of her decision to open the language school.

However, it is not easy for Afghan women to attend because they are customarily prohibited from going out alone -- an act seen as neglecting their responsibilities as mothers. Nonetheless, many find ways to do so.

Despite their husbands' opposition, the women earnestly study Japanese, stopping what they are doing to focus on their work, even while looking after their children. A childcare space with Japanese staff is also provided during class.

A 45-year-old woman who attends the class came to Japan in December 2022 due to deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan. "I felt like I was dead inside because I couldn't speak Japanese," she said.

"My husband tells me to just study with my smartphone. But studying while talking with a teacher is completely different. At home, I need to do the housework as well," she said.

In Afghanistan, the woman had to drop out of junior high school. She said that the experience of being taught in a classroom with a blackboard made her happy and improved her mental state.

Eto said that other students say they feel empowered because they can now talk to teachers from their children's schools or ride buses or trains by themselves. Instead of being financially dependent on their husbands, more and more women have expressed a desire to study further and work outside the home.

Many of the women spend the week counting down the days to the class. It is a day when they can learn Japanese, share their concerns with their peers and socialize.

Mother’s name to be incorporated in new Pakistani passports

July 20, 2025

ISLAMABAD  -  The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, Pakistan has decided to introduce a major change in passports in line with international standards. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, which works under the Ministry of Interior, will now incorporate the mother’s name alongside the father’s name in Pakistani passports. The decision aligns with international standards and addresses societal needs, said DG of Immigration and Passports, Mustafa Jamal Kazi in an interview.

He said the decision is aimed at meeting international requirements and facilitating citizens facing challenges under the current information provided in the passports.

The change would also address the issues faced by Pakistani women, especially single mothers. Currently, Pakistani Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) and passports only include the father’s name, which causes issues, particularly for single mothers raising children alone. It would also help recognise the rights of women. The absence of the father, in some cases, led to various legal and administrative issues, especially for divorcees. The DG stated that developed countries have already included the mother’s name in documents, providing greater convenience for citizens internationally.

About the legal status of the existing valid passports, the DG said that current passports will remain valid until their expiry, and the new rule will apply to passports issued henceforth. There is no need to obtain new passports immediately.

'They were best friends':Jeffrey Epstein's ex girlfriend Stacey Williams on Trump-Epstein bond; describes duo as ‘bro’ and ‘wingman’
