The Al-Amin
Foundation for Peace and Development, a community-based NGO in Borno, says it
has deradicalised 90 women and girls involved in insurgency.
The
foundation’s executive director, HamsatuAl-Amin, said this at the third batch
graduation of 30 women and girls at a ceremony in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
Ms Al-Amin
said the women were part of the 800 women involved in the insurgency registered
by the foundation in the Maiduguri metropolis and Jere LGAs.
According
to Ms Al-Amin, the deradicalised women had helped in bringing about 190 of
their relatives involved in the insurgency out of the bush to surrender.
She
lauded the Borno government for introducing the ‘Borno Model’ that provided
room for repentant insurgents to continue to surrender.
While
noting that there’s a lot of work to be done, Ms Al-Amin called for support and
collaboration with the state government and other stakeholders in taking the
message of peace and reconciliation to all parts of Borno.
The
commissioner of women’s affairs and social development, ZuwairaGambo, lauded
the foundation for its effectiveness in the deradicalisation process and
assured it of support.
Ms Gambo
said the ‘Borno Model’ had led to the surrender of about 300,000 people
comprising 6,760 fighters, 33,000 of their wives, 85,579 farmers they used as
slaves and thousands of their children, including unaccompanied children.
In his
message at the occasion, the theatre commander of Operation Haidin Kai,
WaidiShuiabu, appreciated the effort of the foundation and assured it of
collaboration with the military.

Telangana:
Court upholds rights of Shia women from Akhbari sect to conduct religious
prayers in Ibadat Khana
SurenderKunti
Jul 30,
2024
In a
historic ruling, the Telangana High Court has pronounced in favour of the
rights of Shia Muslim women belonging to
the Akhbari Sect, allowing them to conduct Majlis, Jashans, and other religious
prayers in the Ibadat Khana situated in Darulshifa, Hyderabad
n a
landmark ruling, the Telangana High Court has upheld the rights of Shia Muslim
women from the Akhbari Sect to conduct Majlis, Jashans and other religious
prayers in the Ibadat Khana located in Darulshifa, Hyderabad. This decision
addresses a significant issue of sectarian discrimination within the Shia
Muslim community, between Akhbari Sect and Usooli Sect of Shia Muslims.
Background
and Legal Battle
Despite
this, a self-styled committee had been preventing the Akhbari women from
performing their religious duties while allowing the Usooli Sect of the Shia
Muslims to do so, leading to allegations of discrimination and violation of
fundamental rights of women.
The
court noted that the Waqf Board’s 2007 proceeding was clear in allowing Shia
Muslim women to conduct religious prayers in the Ibadat Khana. Furthermore, the
court referenced the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Indian Young Lawyers
Association Vs State of Kerala (Sabarimala Temple case), which upheld the right
of women to enter religious places.
Further,
this Court observed that nowhere, in the Holy Book, the Almighty prohibited women
from entering into prayer halls to offer their prayers.
In the
petitioner’s response, it was firmly stated that the Constitutional courts have
consistently upheld that all provisions outlined in the Wakf must be honored in
both letter and spirit. The petitioner highlighted a recent event on January 6,
2024, where a combined function was held in the Ibadat Khana with the third
respondent serving as one of the chief guests. During this event, men and women
of the Usooli sect were seen mingling freely in the men’s hall, sitting next to
each other without any restrictions. In stark contrast, women from the Shia
Akhbari Sect were prohibited from conducting women’s Majlis, Jashan, and other
prayers in the same area of the Ibadat Khana. The petitioner argued that, in
the eyes of God, men and women are equal; therefore, women should have the same
right to access the Ibadat Khana and offer prayers as men do. There is no
prohibition by custom, usage, or practice against women praying in the Ibadat
Khana. The petitioner
further
contended that the third respondent was needlessly complicating the issue,
acting as though he were the sole authority over the Ibadat Khana. Although the
petitioner submitted a detailed reply to the counteraffidavit filed by the Waqf
Board, the court deemed it unnecessary to delve into all those details given
the nature of the order to be passed.
sooli
Sect women constitutes clear discrimination. It highlighted that Article 25(1)
of the Constitution ensures freedom of conscience and the right to freely
profess, practice, and propagate religion, irrespective of gender or
sectarian
distinctions.
In its
order dated on 25 July, the court directed the respondents to immediately
permit women of the Akhbari Sect to conduct Majlis, Jashans, and other
religious prayers in the Ibadat Khana
In
response to the recent judgment, an individual who wished to remain anonymous
expressed their views on the ongoing discrimination within the Muslim
community. “Muslims have different sects and customs, which is well-known,”
they stated. “They claim that all individuals are equal, but in practice, this
is far from the truth. There is a glaring inconsistency between their words and
actions. This judgment underscores the need for Shia Muslims, especially women,
to raise their voices against the anti-women elements within Islam. It is time
for the Shia Muslim community and women to stand up against these
discriminatory practices and demand their rightful place within their religious
spaces.”

Iranian
Teacher and Activist, Sara Siahpour, Summoned on Propaganda Charges
JULY 30,
2024
A
prominent teacher and union activist in Iran has been summoned by authorities
on charges of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic."
Sara
Siahpour, a teacher from Alborz province, was called to the 21st Branch of the
Karaj Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday.
This
latest development on Tuesday adds to a series of legal and professional
challenges Siahpour has faced in recent years.
Siahpour's
troubles with authorities date back to 2017 when she was first summoned
following complaints from the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Despite
initial cases against her being closed in 2019, she has faced ongoing legal
scrutiny.
In
December 2023, Siahpour was sentenced to six years in prison by the
Revolutionary Court of Tehran Province.
The
charges against her included "collusion" against national security
and propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic.
This
verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal in March. A subsequent request for a
retrial was rejected by the Supreme Court.
Further
pressure on Siahpour was created by blocking her bank accounts and
disconnecting her personal mobile phone in early 2024.
Notably,
she has also been dismissed from her teaching position, which she proudly
referred to as an "order of honor" on her Instagram page.
The
dismissal cited various reasons, including her union activities, participation
in teacher gatherings, publishing photos without hijab, and supporting the Woman,
Life, Freedom movement.

Iranian
Woman Murdered by Father in 'Honor Killing'
JULY 30,
2024
A
25-year-old Iranian woman, who is a mother of two young girls, was reportedly
killed by her father in what is being described as an "honor
killing."
JanehPirnezhad's
father suffocated her by submerging her head in a tub of water, according to
the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
The
motive behind the crime was to "protect family honor" after a video
of Pirnezhad at home with her cousin was circulated.
At the
time of the murder, Pirnezhad's husband, who works as a laborer, was not
present.
This
case adds to a growing trend of violence against women and femicides in Iran.
Since
March 21, 2024, at least 69 women across Iran have been killed by close
individuals and family members, according to Hengaw.
Of
these, 12 cases have been categorized as "honor-related" murders.
Shargh
newspaper, in a report citing official statistics last year, reported that in
less than two years, at least 165 women in Iran were killed by a male member of
their family, 41 of which were in the capital Tehran.

A
French-ComoranWoman Arrested InComoros Over Anti-Government Video
31 July,
2024
A
French-Comoran woman has been detained for a week in the Comoros over an online
video criticising an ally of President AzaliAssoumani, her lawyer said on
Tuesday.
Mze Said
Fatima, 54, was officially charged on Tuesday with disseminating false news,
discrediting the institutions and damaging the image of an individual, the
lawyer, Djamal El-dineBacar, said.
"The
charges, which are exaggerated, do not justify her being remanded in
custody," Bacar told AFP.
Fatima
has already spent seven days behind bars, more than the maximum 48 hours
legally allowed before charges are pressed, after being detained in the
capital, Moroni, on 23 July, he said.
Her
detention followed a complaint lodged by the presidential delegate responsible
for defence, Youssoufa Mohamed Ali.
Ali is
close to Assoumani, a former military ruler who was re-elected president in
January. The vote was followed by deadly protests.
The
complaint centred on a video Fatima posted online after the disputed elections
in which she criticises Ali, according to local media.
The
mother-of-four who lives on the French island of Reunion is heard accusing him
and the country's "dictatorship" of "atrocities".
"I'll
be coming to the Comoros in July, and when I get there, I'll have to be
arrested, but I'm not afraid of you," Fatima is heard saying.
Fatima
is one of many Comorans living abroad who have contested Assoumani's
re-election. Assoumani has long been accused of creeping authoritarianism.
The
government told the newspaper Al-Watwan that it did not interfere in judicial
matters.
The
French embassy in Moroni said that it was exercising consular protection while
respecting Comorian sovereignty.
