Tunisians Raise Alarm on Fatwa Encouraging 'Sexual Jihad'

Headlines like this in the national and international media have alarmed and bewildered Muslims the world over for the last several months.

Jihad al Nikah, a Takfiri trend among the jihadists in Syria and Iraq has the support of the Salafi muftis. The self proclaimed warriors of Islam have endangered the honour and dignity of Muslim women in their captured territory by their diktat that Muslims should offer their daughters in temporary Nikah to the warriors of Islam who are away from home and wives for months. Earlier, during the civil war in Syria, a Sunni mufti of Saudi Arabia had issued the fatwa urging girls to offer their services to the warriors. Following the fatwa dozens of girls from neighbouring countries had set out for Syria. One man even divorced his wife to enable her to offer herself to the ‘holy warriors’ and both arrived in Syria. However, the fatwa did not make it mandatory for the Muslims to offer their girls to them. So only those who believed in the legitimacy of the fatwa and wished to serve Islam were expected to follow the fatwa. Another mufti Yasir al Ajlawni went to the extent of saying that the fighters should rape the non-Sunni women, particularly Shias (more specially the women of Bashar Al Assad’s sect Alawite). Non-Sunni included Christian and other non-Muslim communities as he presented the precedence from Quran citing the verse in which Melk Al Yamin mentioned meaning ‘all your right hand possesses’.

The ISIS has issued a similar fatwa. They have issued an edict asking the Muslims of their captured territories to offer their daughters and sisters in temporary Nikah to the holy warriors as they are sex starved for months, and to continue to holy war in the best of spirits they need girls who offer themselves to the soldiers in temporary marriages. This edict was binding on all and those who will oppose or ignore it will be considered Adu Allah (the enemy of Allah).

This temporary marriage is also a misleading alibi. Once the girls go to them became sex slaves for many men. They are beaten up, tortured and humiliated.

A report on Press TV says:

Foreign-backed ISIL militants in Iraq have called on the residents of the country’s major northern city of Mosul to offer their women to the Takfiri militants for sex. In a statement released nearly a week ago, the notorious and well-armed militants have also threatened Iraqis in the northern city, with consequences if they fail to comply with the order.

This order of the ISIS has made the parents in the captured territories very much worried as the dignity and honour of their girls and women are under threat from those who claim they are fighting to establish the rule of God.

This order is in sheer violation of the Quran and Hadith which guarantees the safety and security of life, property and dignity of the people of conquered territory by the Islamic army. The Quran prohibits forced sex with ‘Laundis’ (woman slaves) as the Jews would force their ‘Laundis’ (women slaves) to have sex with their ‘clients ‘for money. How can then daughters or sisters be forced to have sex with people against their wishes, and that too extramaritally? Please have a look at this video..

Nowhere in the Islamic history, did the Islamic army seek the sexual services of women outside of marriage though during the time of the prophet pbuh battles lingered on for months. The soldiers of Islam who ventured into foreign lands never threatened the honour of the women of the country.

This notorious un-Islamic trend caught up with the Muslim world last year during the Syria civil war when a Saudi cleric called Al Arifi issued a fatwa calling Muslim girls to go to Syria and offer their services to the Sunni fighters fighting the secular government of Syria to establish an Islamic caliphate. Other Salafi Muftis, ignorant of true Islamic principles and tenets, similar Fatwas asking Muslim girls to join the sex jihad to get the status of martyrs in Allah’s way. Unfortunately, no Muslim country bothered to fight against this menace officially. No official fatwa denouncing or condemning such Fatwas were made by Saudi Arabia or any other Islamic country or individual muftis or scholars.

When the Fatwas favouring sex jihad went viral, girls embarked on their journey to Syria. A captured rebel fighter told the media that he saw 13 girls on the war front who were from different countries. Instead of being Islamic, this practice of offering girls for religious service is more a practice adopted by the Christian countries during the Crusade when Christian girls were employed to seduce Muslim soldiers of Salahuddin Ayyubi. The girls were told that by offering their sexual services to the Muslim soldiers, they were actually serving God for which they will get rewards in the Hereafter. By issuing such Fatwas, the Muslim muftis are following the same practice of the Christians and the Jewish media is spreading these unscrupulous Fatwas to fulfil their own objectives.

A Tunisian minister had told the National Constituent Assembly of Tunisia that a girl attended 20, 30 or 100 soldiers during her stay.

Surprisingly, the recent order of the ISIS has not been condemned by any Saudi, Egyptian and Qatari Salafi mufti or scholar. Allama Al Qaradhawi who had issued a fatwa calling all Sunni Muslims from across the world to join the jihad against Shias in Syria is tight lipped on the order. No Saudi mufti has said anything opposing or condemning the fatwa of the ISIS. This shows their complicity and approval of such a practice which is in violation of Islamic and Quranic teachings. The Quran disapproves of temporary marriage. This becomes more disturbing when it is known from various circles that most of the fighters are from Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the main supporters and fund providers to the ISIS. Last year the State TV of Syria had aired the interview of a captive fighter of Jabhat ul Nusrah, Baher Abdul Karim Elvis who said that the main supporter of Jabhat ul Nusrah is Saudi Arabia. He also said that Yousuf Al Qaradhawi and Md Al Arifi were in constant touch with the leaders of Al Nusrah. He further said that the group had links with Saudi, Qatari, American, Israeli and British officers apart from Yousuf Al Qaradhawi and Md Al Arifi.

Recent reports have also confirmed the financial help and support of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to the fighters of ISIS and training given to them by the US army officers.

In the given circumstances and in the light of the facts that have emerged, it is evident that Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab countries are behind the ISIS and so their silence on the ISIS orders implementing forceful sex with the women of the conquered territory tantamount to their approval of this un-Islamic act.

Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries are accountable for the promotion of this un-Islamic practice that has tarnished the image of Islam which is the upholder of the rights of women and guarantees them the right to honour in its territories. The Saudi Arabia must issue an official order condemning this un-Islamic practice promoted by the ISIS in clear terms. Veiled Fatwas issued by it against temporary marriages will not help. It should be noted that recently the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has issued a fatwa invalidating temporary marriages by Arabs in foreign lands.
