Iranian
Activist Fariba Balouch Among Recipients of 2024 International Women of Courage
Awards
March
03, 2024
Iranian
women’s rights activist Fariba Balouch will be among 13 recipients being
honored in Washington Monday at the annual International Women of Courage
(IWOC) Awards ceremony at the White House.
On
Friday, the State Department announced that Balouch was one of those being
recognized at the ceremony hosted by first lady Jill Biden and Secretary of
State Antony Blinken.
In
its 18th year, the Secretary of State's IWOC Award recognizes women from around
the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength, and leadership
in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity and equality, and
the empowerment of women and girls.
Fariba
Balouch is an Iranian human rights activist residing in London.
The
State Department press release recognizing her said, “She is from Iran's Sistan
and Baluchistan Province and a member of Iran's marginalized Baluchi ethnic
group. She is outspoken about women's rights and the human rights crisis in
Sistan and Baluchistan, which has been disproportionately affected by regime
violence, executions, and systemic discrimination.”
“As a
result of her activism and in an effort to intimidate her, Iranian authorities
have threated her life and detained her son and brother in Iran. Yet, Ms.
Balouch believes the only way forward is resistance, and she persists in her
activism. Ms. Balouch continues to advocate for Iranian women's rights and to
draw attention to the Iranian regime's gender-, ethnicity-, and sect-based
discrimination,” the State Department said.
The
documentary film "In This Cage," created by Hojjat Tavakoli, a
journalist from the Persian service of VOA, chronicles the life of Fariba
Balouch. It offers insight into her challenging journey and illuminates the
collective struggles of the inhabitants, particularly women, in Sistan and
Baluchistan.
Benafsha
Yaqoobi from Afghanistan, Rina Gonoi from Japan, Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello
from Cuba, and Fawzia Karim Firoze from Bangladesh are also recipients of the
2024 International Women of Courage Award.
Since
March 2007, the Department of State has recognized more than 190 women from 90
countries with the IWOC Award.
During
the 2023 International Women of Courage Award ceremony held on March 8, 2023,
the Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award was bestowed upon the Women and
Girl Protestors of Iran.

Saima
Wazed Of WHO Says Time to Make Ear and Hearing Care A Reality for All
Mar
4, 2024
Aasha
Khosa
The
World Health Organisation (WHO) observes World Hearing Day on March 3 every
year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss, and to
promote ear and hearing care across the world.
WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia,
Saima Wazed said that this year, the WHO is observing the occasion with a call
to focus on "Changing Mindsets: Let's make ear and hearing care a reality
for all!"
"We
know that challenges remain due to societal misperceptions and mindsets marked
by stigma, and on this day we renew our focus to overcome these by raising
awareness and through information-sharing, targeted at the public and
healthcare providers," Wazed said in a statement
It is
estimated that over 1.5 billion people globally are affected by hearing loss,
nearly 80 per cent of whom live in low- and middle-income countries of the
world. In South-East Asia region itself, an estimated 400 million people
currently have ear and hearing problems.
Unfortunately,
these numbers are rising. At the current rate, it is likely that by 2050 there
could be over 660 million people with ear and hearing problems in the region
alone, the statement said.
Despite
its prevalence, and the fact that effective interventions are available and
cost-effective, globally, over 80 per cent of ear and hearing care needs remain
unmet. It is evident that this must be addressed with urgency.
Hearing
loss has severe implications for language development, psychological
well-being, quality of life, educational attainment, and economic independence.
The
fact is that many of the common causes of hearing loss, such as birth-related
problems or ear diseases can be prevented; and nearly everyone with an ear or
hearing problem can benefit through available effective and cost-effective
medical, surgical and rehabilitative interventions.
The
economic impact of unaddressed hearing loss is staggering. The global annual
cost is nearly USD1 trillion, and the cost for our Region alone is USD 110
billion.
However,
investing just USD 1.33 per capita annually for ear and hearing care in health
systems can yield a remarkable return of nearly USD16 for every dollar invested
over a 10-year period. This investment, if sustained, promises substantial
returns and a significant reduction in unaddressed hearing loss costs,
according to Wazed.
"I
am pleased that many Member States in our region have prioritised ear and
hearing care," the WHO official stated.
Bangladesh,
Myanmar and Nepal have already conducted situational assessment using WHO
tools, and are progressing towards strategic development for strengthening ear
and hearing care services.
Myanmar
aims to provide integrated services in combination with Eye Care, Elderly,
Mental Health Care service in a people-centred approach at community level.
Free hearing aids were provided in Myanmar when the situational assessment was
conducted last year, the statement said.
Bhutan
has started screening all children for ear and hearing and providing services
including hearing aids free of cost for children.
"Currently,
our teams are collaborating with and providing technical support to the
Government of India to redesign the National Program for Prevention and Control
of Deafness," WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, Saima Wazed,
said.
Indonesia's
Ministry of Health intends to develop a roadmap for ear and hearing disorder
prevention and control, and this will also be supported by WHO teams as a part
of the current biennium workplan, he said.
Moving
forward, Wazed said that regional priorities include accelerating the
implementation of people-centered ear and hearing care services, promoting safe
listening practices, advocating for research and data generation, and
strengthening human resources.
"Let
us unite in our commitment to change mindsets related to ear and hearing care,
recognizing the impact it has on lives and livelihoods. By addressing
misperceptions, promoting awareness, and advocating for increased investment
and integration in primary healthcare, we can and will pave the way for a
healthier, more inclusive future," she concluded.

LHC
dismisses plea seeking to stop Aurat March 2024
March
04, 2024
The
Lahore High Court (LHC) dismissed on Monday a petition seeking to stop Aurat March, a women's rights movement in the
country, by terming it "inadmissible", Geo News reported.
The
court had reserved the verdict on the plea against the 2024 Aurat March event
which is set to take place on March 8 (Friday) this week.
LHC's
Justice Shahid Karim announced the decision on the petition filed by a citizen
named Azam Butt. The petitioner had made Lahore Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rafia
Hyder and others party in his plea.
In
his petition, Azam said: "Aurat March cards and banners are not acceptable
in an Islamic society."
He
requested the LHC to issue an order to stop the Aurat March this year.
On
March 8, women around the world mark a day they call their own — International
Women’s Day, highlighting achievements and dialoguing about issues still
unresolved.
The
Women’s Day theme this year is "Siyasat, Muzahamat aur Azadi"
(Politics, resistance, and independence), which focuses on tackling electoral
politics head-on and reimagining a version of political participation where
oppressed groups and communities on the margin take centre stage.
In
Pakistan, women have been organising large public demonstrations for Women’s
Day called Aurat [the Urdu word for woman] March, since 2018. Opposition to
Aurat March has grown in proportion to its popularity and impact.
In a
society where women have been shot, stabbed, stoned, set alight and strangled
for damaging family "honour", critics accuse rights activists of
promoting liberal Western values and disrespecting religious and cultural
mores.
Last
year, the district administration of Lahore denied the march organisers
permission to hold a public rally.
However,
after a legal challenge, DC Haider and Aurat March organisers unanimously
agreed on the time and venue for last year's rally after LHC directed the two
parties to finalise a location for the march.
