Iran Limits Medical Care for Nobel Peace Prize Winner NargesMohammadi Over Hijab in Tehran’s Evin Prison

PARIS: Iranian prison authorities have blocked 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi’s hospital transfer for urgently needed care over her refusal to wear the compulsory hijab, her family has said.

Veteran rights activist Mohammadi, 51, who is currently being held in Tehran’s Evin prison, was awarded the prize in October “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran”.

Her selection came in the wake of months-long protests across Iran triggered by the September 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been arrested for allegedly flouting the Islamic republic’s strict dress rules for women.

Narges has subsequently announced she would not under any circumstances wear a hijab, the head covering which has been obligatory for women in public spaces since shortly after Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution.

Prison authorities in response have refused to transfer Narges, who suffers from heart and lung conditions, to a hospital outside Evin, her family said in a statement, warning her health and life were at risk.

“Two days and nights, a group of women in Evin protested in the prison yard to send Narges Mohammadi to the heart hospital,” they wrote on her Instagram account late on Wednesday.

Iranian Hardliner Women Vow To ‘Strike Fear’ Into Israel by Cooking ‘Upside Down’ Dish of Maqluba

Cooking Maqluba

-------

02nd November 2023

Pro-government women in Iran are cooking the famous Levantine ‘upside down’ dish of maqluba to “instil fear” into Israel amid the war in Gaza.

In the latest regime campaign against its archenemy Israel which is currently fighting the Iran-backed Hamas militia, regime posters offer the “Invitation to Turn Pots to Instil Fear In Israelis”. An image shows a Palestinian woman turning a pot of rice on a platter outside Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

The ‘maqluba campaign’ is the latest in a string of propaganda stunts from the Islamic Republic and has been amplified following Hamas' October 7 invasion of Israel which has led to the worst war in Gaza since the proscribed terror group took over in 2007.

“Tehrani women … will express their support for mothers in Gaza by cooking the most political dish in the world,” hardliner journalist Mahdi Shakibaei tweeted while another promoter of the campaign said cooking maqluba in the heart of Tehran bears the message that “the Zionist regime is doomed to destruction.”

Meanwhile, Iranian leaders continue to issue threats to escalate the war while the regime's regional proxies in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen continue to send attacks towards Israel and US targets in the region.

The maqluba campaign has been mocked by many of the Iranian public. “May God have mercy on us. I think Iran will have the most casualties in the defense of Gaza. First not drinking Coca Cola and Pepsi and now eating maqluba. The people of Gaza would be indebted to [Iranians] for these sacrifices till the end of time,” another sarcastic tweet said.

Century’s Muslim Student Association Offering School-Themed Hijabs

Nov. 3, 2023

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – It’s a chance for Century High School students who practice Islam to show their Panther Pride.

“If we value people, then we’re going to find a way to make sure that they belong, and if they’re wearing something that says Panthers on it, then that’s how you belong,” said Muslim Student Association Advisor and Century High School Teacher Sarah Kowalski.

MSA leaders say the hijabs are a great opportunity for Century’s Muslim students and mothers to show school spirit in a unique way.

“To have this option to contribute and be part of the school spirit, it makes us feel proud and confident to go here, a school that respects us and has options for us,” said Century’s MSA Co President Sacdiyo Omar.

Students can choose to buy a printed paw print for $15, or have the paw print embroidered for $25.

Afghan athlete Shafigah Mohammadi wins Bronze at World Combat Games

Fidel Rahmati

November 2, 2023

Shafiqah Mohammadi, the daughter of a dedicated athlete from Afghanistan, showcased her remarkable talent in the World Combat Games (WCG), competing in the third weight category of 52 kilograms. She not only earned a place in the prestigious event known as the “World Combat Games” but also achieved a remarkable feat by securing the coveted bronze medal in these intense competitions.

Ms. Mohammadi, in a conversation with the Khaama Press News Agency, expressed her heartfelt desire as a girl from Afghanistan. She aspires to see schools, universities, and sports clubs, which rightfully belong to all, open their doors, enabling young girls to pursue their education without hindrance.

Born in 2003 in Jaghori district, Ghazni province, she is currently a student at one of the universities in Iran after completing her primary education. According to Ms Mohammadi, she began her sports journey in the discipline of “savate” in 2018 and, after a year, became a member of the Afghan national savate team in the 52-kilogram weight category.

The Combat Games is a global competition hosted by Saudi Arabia, featuring 16 sports disciplines held from October 20th to 30th through international sports federations under GAISF. It’s worth noting that in one-quarter of the savate competitions, she defeated her Romanian opponent 3-0 but was defeated in the semi-finals against her French rival.

Unfortunately, Mina Moibzada and Saadat Ayin, two other Afghan athletes in this discipline, also fell short of winning medals in this round after losing to their French opponents.

This dedicated young athlete, who attributes her achievements to her family’s support, told Khaama Press, “I want to continue my education and sports and bring honour to myself, my family, and my country.”

Furthermore, Ms. Mohammadi emphasizes, “I hope the interim government in Afghanistan grants girls the right to education, schooling, sports, and work, so they are not deprived of what is rightfully theirs.”

It’s worth mentioning that the World Combat Games have been held every four years since 2010.

Admiral Lisa Franchetti, First Woman Approved to Lead US Navy

3 Nov, 2023

The US Senate has confirmed three high-ranking military nominations, including Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who becomes the first woman to lead the Navy. Senator Tommy Tuberville allowed the votes to go through after months of blocking all confirmations in an anti-abortion protest.

Franchetti, 59, was sworn in as the 33rd Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) on Thursday, following a 95-1 vote on Capitol Hill. The four-star admiral also became the first woman granted a seat at the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff. President Joe Biden nominated her in July – reportedly against the advice of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Since her nomination she has been serving as acting CNO, due to Tuberville’s obstruction.

During the same session, lawmakers approved General David Allvin as the new Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and General Christopher Mahoney as Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Austin welcomed the confirmations and the Senate’s ability to overcome the impasse, saying the three military commanders “have faithfully served their country for decades, and … will continue to be great leaders of our force as they continue to tackle the crucial national security issues of these challenging times.”

Tuberville has been standing in the way of hundreds of candidacies in an attempt to stop federal funding for expenses facilitating abortions. After the US Supreme Court last year allowed individual states to decide whether to allow abortions on their soil, it became harder for troops deployed in more conservative parts of the country to terminate pregnancies.

The DoD compensates travel expenses of service members, who go to other states for abortions. Tuberville has argued that conservative taxpayers have a right not to fund what they perceive as facilitating a sin.

The position put him at odds not only with the White House, but also with many fellow Republicans, since Tuberville blocked nominations made by them as well. A backlog of over 370 candidates has piled up over nine months.

Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska, was among the senators who berated Tuberville’s actions during a heated debate on the floor on Wednesday.

“I'm as pro-life as they come, I strongly disagree with what Secretary Austin and President Biden have done with their politicization of the military on a whole host of fronts including the abortion policy,” he said. His message to the military was: “hang in there… We will be coming here every night to try to get you guys confirmed.”

Tuberville appeared defiant after the session and denied claims that his stubbornness was weakening US national security. He told ABC News: “We tend to drag our feet around a little bit.”

Democrats are mulling a temporary change of procedural rules, which would allow circumventing Tuberville. Republican senators circulated a petition proposing the vote to be forced.

The Alabama senator reportedly had a change of mind on Thursday, after General Eric Smith, the Marine Corps commandant, suffered an apparent heart attack.
