New Delhi: A Hindu woman police
sub-inspector (SI) went missing after filing an application in the Bareilly
sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) office on Friday seeking permission to marry a
Muslim businessman under the Special Marriage Act, the Indian Express reported.
The Bareilly police said on Sunday that
the 50-year-old woman went missing from her duty after the news was circulated
in local newspapers and on social media platforms, according to the report.
The woman filed the application on
Friday evening and since then, both she and the 30-year-old Muslim man have
been ‘untraceable’ according to the police. During an inspection at the police
station where the woman was posted, a senior police officer found her absence
from duty and recorded an adverse entry in the general diary (GD), the Indian
Express report said.
The woman’s brother has filed a
complaint against the Muslim businessman with Additional Director General of
Police (Bareilly Zone) Prem Chand Meena. The cop’s brother has claimed that his
sister has been in a relationship with the businessman for the past years and
accused him of “manipulating and blackmailing her into marriage”, the Indian
Express reported.
“The man possesses videos and photos of
my sister, which he is using to coerce her into marrying him. To protect her
from an interfaith marriage, I approached the ADG, requesting that she be
transferred to either Bijnor or Shamli,” the Indian Express quoted the woman’s
brother as saying.
The police have said the woman came in
contact with the man, a timber merchant, during her posting at the Baheri
police station in Bareilly a few years ago, according to the Indian Express.
In their application before the SDM, the
couple stated that they would not change their religion after the marriage. The
SDM office then sent notices to relevant departments and sought objections, if
any, from the couple’s family members, the Indian Express reported.
“The department has nothing to do with
her personal life, but we will definitely seek an explanation from her for
being absent without informing her seniors. While checking the status of cases
pending with her for investigation, we have been informed that she has 10 cases
pending that need to be investigated. She will have to give reasons for being
absent from her duty without any information and also about the pending cases,”
Bareilly Superintendent of Police Rahul Bhati was quoted as saying by the
Indian Express.

Lubna Shaheen of India Ready To Follow
Her Parents’ Act Of Donating Bodies After Death
Lubna
Shaheen and her sister Ninon Shenaz with their late mother Musfiqua Sultana
------
Daulat Rahman/Guwahati
If the concept of ijtihad allows Muslims
to interpret their religious beliefs with reasoning and progressive thinking to
suit their time and place, Assam’s Aftab Ahmed and Musfiqua Sultana are the
perfect examples. They are the first Muslim couple in the country to donate
their bodies after death to advance research and study in medical science. Body
and organ donation in the Muslim community is still quite low due to their
religious beliefs.
Now the dead couple's daughter Lubna
Shaheen is determined to continue her parents’ legacy despite many of her
relatives and friends citing religious issues to stop her.
Speaking to Awaz-The Voice Assam Lubna
Shaheen said that she has been very fortunate to have been brought up in a
progressive Muslim family where her sister and herself were taught to question
things. Neither religious fundamentalism nor religious dogma was practiced,
though our culture was defined in some ways by Islam, she said.
“Both my parents lived serving people in
little and big ways, and their decision to donate their bodies and eyes after
death arises from this outlook towards life. Had they both not been cancer
patients, their organs would have given lives to many others, but they did the
best they could in the circumstances."
She said, "While I was in college,
I signed up for a blood donation camp and when I told my parents about it, they
encouraged me to do it again. Even though I haven’t yet officially signed up
for organ or body donation, I am planning to do it soon,” Lubna Shaheen said.
Being from the Muslim community it was
not easy for Lubna Shaheen and her elder sister NinonShenaz to hand over the
bodies of their parents to the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH)
for the advancement of research in the field of medical science.
“On the day my father’s body was being
taken to the hospital, we had a group of people who tried to convince us to
bury his body instead. However, my father had foreseen this resistance and had
left behind a will clarifying his decision. In my mother’s case, she didn’t
foresee resistance from her family and just told us her wish verbally. But I
still had to fend off Muslim family friends who called me and tried to make me
change her decision. They expressed their extreme displeasure hinting that she
won’t make it to Jannat (Paradise). But at the same time, we also received messages
from other Muslims who admired their act,” Lubna Shaheen said.
The body of Musfiqua Sultana, a Mazar
Road, Hatigaon resident in Guwahati, was handed over to the GMCH in 2022. Both
her eyes were donated to Sri SankaradevaNethralaya soon after she breathed her
last at her residence on September 8 night in 2022. Musfiqua Sultana’s husband
Aftab Ahmad, a bureaucrat who predeceased her, also donated his body to GMCH in
2011 for the same purpose.
Lubna Shaheen and NinonShenaz are the
only children of Aftab Ahmed and Musfiqua Sultana. They are always happy that
even after their death, their parents will continue to serve society. “I am
hopeful to carry forward this legacy in the future," Lubna said.
The Holy Quran and the Hadith (recorded
words of Prophet Mohammed) are silent on organ donation. Since organ donation
and transplantation is one of the wonders of modern medicine, with the first
successful corneal transplant in 1905, and the first living kidney transplant
in 1954, this silence stands to reason. Islamic scholars and clerics have
debated this issue and most of them think that organ donation is an act of
great charity and supported by the tenets of Islam.
Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s recent appeal to the countrymen to donate organs to save precious lives,
Lubna Shaheen said “At this point, I think just getting the word out is
important and PM Modi getting behind this, with his wide reach across the
country, is a great thing. And hopefully in a decade or more, maybe this will
be the more socially accepted norm”.

Saudi Woman, MaryahAbudeeb’sJewellery,
Transforming Arabic Literature Into Wearable Art
June 18, 2023
RIYADH: MaryahAbudeeb’sjewellery
creations begin with the stroke of a calligraphy brush and end with the design
of masterpieces inspired by poetry and literature.
Abudeeb, a sourcing specialist, is the
founder of Mashq, a jewellery brand named after an ancient and classic form of
calligraphy. The word translates to “stretch out,” which is what is done to
Arabic letters in the calligraphy form.
Her inspiration began at a young age
when she saw her father scribe and her mother create handcrafted pieces.
Describing how they inspired her art,
she said: “My dad is a great calligrapher. I grew up watching the beauty of
Arabic calligraphy done by his hands, which to this day still inspires and
drives me.
“My mother has a creative soul and
creates beauty out of nothing, whether it’s a simple toy or an artistic
masterpiece, which made me become passionate about anything crafted by hand.”
Traveling to various countries and
seeing buildings adorned with historic Arabic writing opened up new worlds for
Abudeeb.
She was also moved when she came across
jewelry that had calligraphy engraved on it, each piece telling a personal
story.
Islamic art has a special place in
Abudeeb’s heart, and she believes it “should be displayed and appreciated.”
“I like to read Islamic design books to
educate myself on the various designs and phrases that are inspired by Islamic
art,” she said.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Abudeeb
had an epiphany.
She thought to herself, “why not combine
both of my passions, jewelry and Arabic handwriting, into one?”
That was the beginning of Mashq.
In March 2021, Abudeeb launched her
first collection. She was involved in the process as the calligrapher and
designer behind each piece of jewelry.
The designs feature verses and lines
from some of her favorites works of Arabic poetry and literature.
Abudeeb explained the design process:
“After I write it (in calligraphy) to the best of my ability, the phrase is
drawn into 3D using a specific program for jewelry design.
“The piece is then developed, either by
hand or by a machine, depending on the size and design of the piece.”
According to Abudeeb, the key to the
perfect piece of jewelry is the way it makes a person feel.
Using different phrases and materials,
such as silver, gold plating and gems, she creates each piece with the
intention of helping the customers feel connected to the engraved words.
“The whole idea that when the person
wears the piece, the phrase becomes a reflection of how they feel or becomes a
source of motivation.”
For Abudeeb, working on collections for
Mashq has been a learning process.
“As I started from scratch, I have
gained so much knowledge in the jewelry industry, from drawing to repairing the
piece itself,” she said.
Although learning about the jewelry
industry from scratch was challenging for someone with limited practical
experience, Abudeeb persevered and refused to be discouraged.
She hopes to release a larger collection
in the future, using pure gold, and to expand the Mashq men’s collection.

Masjid-e-Ghausia Blackburn Mosque Tables
Plans To Extend Women's Prayer Hall
19 JUN 2023
A Blackburn mosque could soon see an
extension to its women's prayer hall after plans were tabled.
The extension would see a new lift
fitted for elderly and disabled worshippers. The Trustees of The Islamic
Religious Centre have asked for planning permission for the scheme at the
Masjid-E-Ghausia in Leamington Road, Wensley Fold.
A supporting statement with the
application to Blackburn with Darwen Council says: “The site comprises of a
plot of land with both vehicular and pedestrian access from Leamington Road and
pedestrian access from Lancaster Place.
“Vehicle parking is generally contained
within the under croft area below the hall, and “blue badge” parking
immediately off Leamington Road.
“The site is contained within an urban
residential area and is one of eight Mosques within an approximate 0.5
kilometre radius of the site.
“The vast majority of the visitors for
congregational prayer to the mosque will walk given the close proximity to
their place of residence
“The majority of the work involves an
extension to the first-floor hall located at the rear of the site and is used
by female members of the congregation.
“It is a popular facility for the local
community and a modest extension is required to cater for the demand.
“There is no wheelchair access to the
upper floor and therefore the installation of the external platform lift is
considered essential to ensure access for all.
“The concept is to extend the existing
building in a manner that is in sympathy to the original structure and retain
the vehicle access to the car parking facility at ground level.
“The scale of development is dictated by
the existing structure, and that there should be no loss of amenity to existing
neighbouring properties.
“It is envisaged that the overall
appearance will be sympathetic to the original structure, built using high
quality materials.
“The new passenger lift will greatly
enhance the use of the building by the elderly and the infirm including people
with any ambulant or dis-ambulant disability.
“The existing car park arrangements are
retained
“The existing hall is used on an
occasional basis, generally no more than twice per week during the afternoon,
and again in the early evening period (17.00 to 19.00 hrs) Monday to Friday.”
