Canada
on Thursday appointed its first special representative on combatting
Islamophobia, a position created following several recent attacks on Muslims in
the country.
Journalist
and activist Amira Elghawaby will fill the post to "serve as a champion,
advisor, expert and representative to support and enhance the federal
government's efforts in the fight against Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial
discrimination and religious intolerance," a statement by the prime
minister's office said.
An
active human rights campaigner, Elghawaby is the communications head for the
Canadian Race Relations Foundation and a columnist for the Toronto Star
newspaper, having previously worked for more than a decade at public
broadcaster CBC.
Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau praised Elghawaby's appointment as "an important
step in our fight against Islamophobia and hatred in all its forms."
"Diversity
truly is one of Canada's greatest strengths, but for many Muslims, Islamophobia
is all too familiar," he added.
Over
the past few years, a series of deadly attacks have targeted Canada's Muslim community.
In
June 2021, four members of a Muslim family were killed when a man ran them over
with his truck in London, Ontario.
Four
years earlier, six Muslims died and five were injured in an attack on a Quebec
City mosque.
n
a series of tweets Thursday, Elghawaby listed the names of those killed in the
recent attacks, adding: "We must never forget."
The
creation of the new job had been recommended by a national summit on
Islamophobia organized by the federal government in June 2021 in response to
the attacks.

Esha
Oza's prolific run with the bat earned her the ICC Associate Player of the Year
2022 award on Wednesday.
Now,
the young UAE batter is eyeing a slice of glory at the Women's Indian Premier
League (WIPL), the inaugural edition of which will start in March this year
after the Indian cricket board auctioned five teams for a whopping $572 million.
The
Mumbai-born cricketer, who fell in love with the game after playing street
cricket with her cousins during summer vacations in India, is hoping to earn a
chance to be a part of a league that is tipped to change the dynamics of
women's cricket.
"What
we have heard is that all (WIPL) teams can have a maximum of five overseas
players playing and one of them should be an associate player. So they are
chances of associate players getting picked as well in the player
auction," the 24-year-old Esha, who will register for the WIPL auction
through the Emirates Cricket Board, told the Khaleej Times.
"The
(ICC Associate Cricketer of the Year) award has come just before the (WIPL)
auction which will be apparently held at the start of February. So yeah just fingers
crossed for that."
In
an emotional social media post after bagging the ICC award, Esha had thanked
all her teammates and coaches at various UAE academies that helped her chase
the cricket dream.
"They
(teammates and coaches) are happy, from the morning (Wednesday), I have been
saying, 'thank you, thank you', after reading all the messages," said
Esha, who helped the UAE qualify for the Asia Cup last year with a string of
brilliant knocks.
"The
team that we have right now is so supportive, winning this award would not have
been possible without them.
"You
can only perform as well as you can if you have a good team. If there are
people who are backing you throughout, then you can just go out and play the
way you want to play," added Esha who will be flying to Australia on
January 28 to play for the Fairbreak XI against Cricket ACT in the Canberra
Games.

Indian
Trailblazer Sania Mirza Bows Out Of Grand Slam Tennis
January
27, 2023
Indian
trailblazer Sania Mirza bowed out of Grand Slam tennis Friday with defeat in
the Australian Open mixed-doubles final playing alongside Rohan Bopanna — her
first playing partner 22 years ago.
The
36-year-old Mirza, regarded as her country’s greatest women’s tennis player,
returned to Melbourne Park for one last hurrah and made it all the way to the
decider.
But
she and 42-year-old Bopanna were unable to get over the line, losing 7-6 (7/2),
6-2 to Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos.
Mirza
was in tears in the post-match presentation ceremony.
“Rohan
was my first-ever mixed-doubles partner at (aged) 14 and we won the nationals,”
said Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion, three in doubles and three in
mixed.
“It
was a long time ago, 22 years ago, and I couldn’t think of a better person —
he’s one of my best friends and best partners — to finish my career here and to
play the final.
“There’s
no better place for me, or person for me, to finish my Grand Slam career.”
Mirza,
who is married to former Pakistan team captain Shoaib Malik, has a young son
Izhaan and said it was incredible to play in front of him in a major final.
“I
never thought that I would be able to play in front of my child in a Grand Slam
final, so it’s truly special to have my four-year-old and my parents here,” she
said.
Mirza,
known as a feisty convention-breaker, was the first Indian to win a WTA singles
title, in 2005 at her hometown Hyderabad.
She
reached the fourth round of the US Open the same year and by 2007 was among the
women’s top 30.
But
a wrist injury caused her to concentrate on doubles, forging a partnership with
Swiss great Martina Hingis which produced three Grand Slam titles.
She
is due to retire from all tennis after a tournament next month in Dubai, where
she has lived for more than a decade and recently launched a tennis academy.
