JEDDAH:
Somali-born Briton Ramla Ali won the first professional women’s boxing match
held in Saudi Arabia with a spectacular first-round knock-out of Crystal Garcia
Nova on Saturday.
Just
seconds into the fight, after already connecting with heavy shots to the head
and body, Ali sent Nova’s gumshield flying with a fierce right that slammed
into the Dominican fighter’s jaw.
“I
feel like I need to go back and do some more pads. I didn’t really get out of
first gear,” said the 32-year-old at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah,
adding: “It’s cool to get the stoppage.”
Ali,
a former refugee from war in Somalia and fighting at super-bantamweight, now
stands at 7-0 in her professional career as she moves toward an expected world
title attempt.
Before
the fight, she said she hoped to be an inspiration in Saudi Arabia as she led a
boxing class in Jeddah for Saudi women and girls as young as 15.
“The
organizers inviting myself to compete and allowing this fight to go ahead
really shows you the cultural shift in the landscape that is happening in the
region,” a press release quoted her as saying.
“Tonight
was amazing, coming into this fight, some were referring to it as ‘the puncher
versus the boxer’ because of her high knockout percentage ratio, but we wanted
to take the fight to her (Garcia) and I’m delighted to come away victorious.
“Since
I arrived in Saudi Arabia everyone has been so warm and welcoming, and tonight
just adds to what has been an incredible experience.”
Saturday’s
fight was on the undercard of the world heavyweight clash between Anthony
Joshua and defending champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Ahead
Of Durga Puja: Seven-Yard Sari, Inspired By Bengal CM And Tagore’s Mother

Biswa
Bangla, a retail enterprise established by the micro, small and medium
enterprises (MSME) department of the Bengal government, has decided to bring
for Bengal’s women a sari that stands out because of its length and is part of
chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s wardrobe.
Ahead
of Durga Puja, the enterprise will launch a collection of seven-yard saris so
far worn by a handful in the state, Mamata being the most prominent.
“The
seven-yard sari has been inspired by two very formidable ladies of Bengal — the
first being Sarada Devi, the mother of Rabindranath Tagore, and the second our
chief minister,” said Partho Kar, the chief consultant to Biswa Bangla.
The
use of longer drapes is prevalent in other parts of the country, such as
Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu where many women wear nine-yard-long saris. In
Bengal, the regular length of saris ranges from six to 6.2 yards.
However,
according to Kar, there is historical evidence that many women in
pre-independent Bengal wore seven-yard saris. As of now, seven-yard-long saris
are available only on special orders. For Mamata, many of her seven-yard-long
saris are procured from another government enterprise that deals with
handlooms, Tantuja.
Speaking
to this correspondent, Tantuja’s lead designer Anindita Nath confirmed that
Mamata was one of the very few who wore seven-yard saris regularly.
“Bengali
women are comparatively short, which is why 5.5 meters or six-yard-long saris
are used,” she said. “Unless it is someone like the chief minister, who
specifically wears longer ones.”
According
to Kar, once Biswa Bangla launches the seven-yard saris, anyone willing to buy
it would not have to place a special order. He said seven-yard-long silk saris
would cost from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000 at a Biswa Bangla store.

Women
In Finland Post Videos Of Themselves Partying To Stand In Solidarity With PM,
Sanna Marin
Maanya
Sachdeva
21-08-2022
Women
in Finland are posting videos of themselves partying to support prime minister
Sanna Marin who became embroiled in a “partygate” scandal this week.
Finnish
women, as well as those in neighbouring Denmark, have been sharing videos of
themselves dancing and having a good time with their friends to express their
support for the world’s youngest head of state, amid leaked videos of the
politician partying. The videos are accompanied with the hashtag
#SolidaritywithSanna.
BBC
journalist Megha Mohan on Saturday evening tweeted a montage video of Danish
women dancing in support of Ms Marin, also noting that “there are many others
though individually from Finland”.
The
support for Ms Marin, who took oath in 2019 when she was just 34, comes after
she faced intense backlash and scrutiny over two videos of her partying were
leaked to the press.
The
first video, which appears to be from Instagram Stories, shows Ms Marin
drinking with a group of friends, singing and dancing to songs by Finnish
rapper Petri Nygård and pop singer Antti Tuisku. It was released on 17 August.
On
Friday, Ms Marin announced that she had taken a drug test “to clear her
reputation” after her political oponents alleged that she was socialising with
people who used illegal substances.
There
was no evidence of illicit drug-taking in the video, but some media outlets
claimed the phrase jauhojengi – meaning “powder gang”, interpreted as alluding
to cocaine – could be heard in one of the leaked clips, Finland’s public
broadcaster Yleisradio Oy (YLE) reported.
Ms
Marin, who has been married to her partner of 18 years since 2020, has also
denied the allegation Mr Uusivirta was kissing her neck in the video from the
Helsinki club.
In
a statement addressing criticism of the videos, Ms Marin said she “resents
these became known to the public”, adding that they were filmed in a private
space.
Despite
the support from women in Finland and Denmark, however, Ms Marin’s critics said
her partying is irresponsible at a time when tensions with Russia have
intensified over her efforts to have Finland join Nato during Vladimir Putin’s
ongoing war in Ukraine.
Ms
Marin, 36, came under fire last year for partying at a nightclub despite
knowing she had come in contact with foreign minister Pekka Haavisto who had
contracted Covid-19 in December.

Bilkis
case: 3 Muslim MLAs seek President's directions to home ministry, Guj govt to
revoke release of 11 convicts
Aug
20, 2022
AHMEDABAD:
Three Gujarat Congress MLAs have written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking
her direction to the Union Home Ministry and the state government to withdraw
the "shameful decision" to release the 11 convicts serving a life
sentence in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case.
The
three MLAs - Gyasuddin Shaikh, Imran Khedawala and Javed Pirzada - have written
a letter to the president, Shaikh said on Saturday.
In
their joint letter, the MLAs termed the Gujarat government's decision ordering
the release of the 11 convicts "shameful", "insensitive"
and disappointing for those struggling to get justice.
"Even
though the Central Government has a clear guideline that rape convicts serving
life imprisonment should not be released under the policy of pardon, the BJP
government of Gujarat has shown its insensitivity by pardoning 11 convicts in
the Bilkis Bano gang rape case. This is a disappointing decision for those
struggling to get justice," said the letter, a copy of which was posted on
Shaikh's Twitter handle.
The
convicts in the Bilkis Bano case should be given the harshest punishment for
the crime of gang rape and the murder of seven members of her family, including
her three-year-old daughter, during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots.
The
MLAs said they appealed to the President to "immediately intervene in this
matter and direct the Union Ministry of Home and the Government of Gujarat to
withdraw this shameful decision of pardoning the criminals".
"The
most shocking thing is that people with radical ideologies are celebrating and
honouring the release of such criminals, which is an inhuman act. It is
necessary to stop this move of the Gujarat government before it becomes a
dangerous tradition," the letter stated.
"The
Gujarat government should withdraw its decision so that citizens do not lose
faith in the law and other women do not get to suffer what rape victim Bilkis
Bano had to suffer," it said.
On
August 15, all the 11 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2002 case
of Bilkis Bano's gang rape and murder of her seven family members during the
communal riots walked out of the Godhra sub-jail after the BJP government in
Gujarat allowed their release under its remission policy, drawing a sever flak
from Opposition parties.
A
special CBI court in Mumbai on January 21, 2008, sentenced to life imprisonment
all the 11 accused in the case for the murder of seven family members of Bilkis
Bano, a riots survivor, and her gang rape. Their conviction was later upheld by
the Bombay High Court.
They
were released after the Supreme Court directed the government to consider the
plea of the convicts for relief under the state's 1992 remission policy.
These
convicts had served more than 15 years in prison after which one of them
approached the Supreme Court with a plea for his premature release.
The
apex court had directed the Gujarat government to look into the issue of
remission of his sentence as per its 1992 policy based on the date of his
conviction. Thereafter, the government formed a committee which decided to
allow the release of all the convicts.
On
March 3, 2002, Bilkis Bano's family was attacked by a mob at Randhikpur village
in Limkheda taluka of the Dahod district. Bilkis, who was five months pregnant
at the time, was gang raped and seven members of her family were killed during
the riots triggered by the Godhra train-burning incident.

Transformational
Coach Madiha Bee's Venture Focuses On Empowering Women In Arab World
by
Sandhya D'Mello

Aug 2022
People
in today’s world are hungry for change — an upgrade, some progress, and
evolution. A Transformational Coach is someone who supports others on a human
level in creating this significant change in their work, relationships, health,
and lives in general and there is no stopping for Madiha Bee – a
transformational coach popularly known as 'Awakened Woman'
So
who is transformational coach and what does the role include? They work on
psychological, emotional, practical and cultural levels to make sure clients
are empowered to re-write their realities and fully awaken their dreams and
potential. Transformational coaches live in a world where everything is
possible — where so much potential is just sitting there, waiting to be
awakened!
Madiha
started working as a coach four years ago before it was “trendy” to do so.
Before this shift in her career, Madiha worked as an International Media
Officer at the Office of Queen Rania and had a brief stint working for
Mindvalley, an online educational platform based in Malaysia. Subsequently, she
launched her own purpose-driven business, with the goal of using her voice and
platform to support the personal and collective empowerment of women in the
Arab world.
Madiha's
venture Awakened Woman is registered in Dubai’s Free Zone and she has supported
Arab women from all walks of life. She reaches over a hundred thousand women
from all across the Arab World through her social media platforms and free
online content.
Her
more exclusive group coaching programmes welcome professional women who are
looking to discover a more “aligned” way of operating in the modern world — a
way that is harmonious with their feminine essence and leadership. Her
one-on-one coaching, also known as “Alignment Coaching”, is reserved for
high-end clients who are ready to invest in their growth by working closely for
a longer period of time.
She
has coached celebrities, influencers, government officials, and other powerful
women from the Arab world and hopes to reach even more change-makers and
royalty across the region.
Why
is there a need for transformational coaches? "There is a need for
transformational coaches because, as we look around our world, we are
witnessing a deep need for transformation. In nature, all things are changing —
be it the seasons, the climate, or even the colours of nature. But as humans,
we often get caught up in many aspects of our lives, defying a healthy and
natural process: Change," said Madiha.
"As
more women realise the need for transformation, a desire to upgrade their standards
in life, and a drive to create something in the world, their search
inadvertently leads to transformational coaches. Such women need timely and
effective counselling in these important moments in their lives — which I like
to call initiations," added Madiha.
The
crux of the matter is that we all need help and support at times, and it is
nice to know that there are professionals out there whose sole job is to
provide it. The right coaching at the right time can rejuvenate your mind and
body, helping you become the best version of yourself.
The
impact of hiring a coach is immense. Tremendous inner shifts occur, leading to
women becoming more confident, expressive, creative, and better leaders,
empowered to create the life, relationships, and careers they desire.
"Many
end up quitting their jobs and starting their own business. Many 10X the
profits in their business when they become leaders that are more aligned with
their true motives and purpose. Others find the secrets to creating healthy and
mutually-nourishing relationships. So many layers unfold throughout a coaching
journey. And, while every client is different, what stays the same is that the
coaching journey creates the space for the necessary transformation to happen —
exactly like a caterpillar transforming inside a cocoon to become a butterfly
she was meant to be, with all her colours, expressions, and awareness,"
concludes Madiha
