WASHINGTON
— The past 2½ years have been “very tough” for 28-year-old Maryam Maroof Arvin,
as she has been “deprived of all her rights” under the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Arvin
was a master’s degree student in a private university in Kabul in December 2022
when the Taliban, the de facto government of Afghanistan, barred women from
universities.
“It
has created in me a feeling of depression. I am under mental and psychological
pressure, and I feel very angry,” said Arvin who dreamed of becoming a
politician to raise the voices for Afghan women.
A
U.N. report, released in September 2023, stated that under the Taliban, who
seized power in 2021, the mental health of women in Afghanistan deteriorated.
According
to the report, more than two-thirds of women in Afghanistan reported “feelings
of anxiety, isolation and depression” between April and June.
“Women
spoke of psychological issues, including depression, insomnia, loss of hope and
motivation, anxiety, fear, aggression, isolation and increasingly isolationist
behavior, and suicidal ideation,” the report stated.
The
Taliban have steadily imposed repressive measures against women in Afghanistan,
banning them from the workplace, secondary and university education,
long-distance traveling without a close male relative, beauty salons, gyms and
public parks.
Arvin
said that she can’t believe that all her freedoms and two decades of gains in
women’s rights were lost in the past 2½ years of the Taliban’s rule.
Before
the Taliban’s takeover, about 3.5 million girls out of roughly 9 million
students were going to school. Thirty-three percent of about 450,000 students
enrolled in universities were young women.
MawlodaTawana,
an Afghan women’s rights activist, told VOA that the exclusion of women from
the workplace and society adversely affected most women’s psychological and
emotional well-being.
“Women
are locked up at home, and the unhappiness and frustration from this could
promote domestic violence and suicide attempts,” said Tawana.
Media
outlets also reported a surge in suicides by women in Afghanistan. The Taliban
have not published any data on suicide rates, and they have prohibited Afghan
health officials from providing information on the topic.
Sahar
Fetrat, a researcher with the Women’s Rights Division at Human Rights Watch, or
HRW, told VOA that women’s mental health in Afghanistan has deteriorated
because of the repressive restrictions imposed on them.
“Women
feel as if they have essentially been banned from participating in life. They
have become stripped of basic rights, such as receiving health care,” said
Fetrat.
“The
Taliban’s restrictions on women’s freedom of movement and employment with
humanitarian and other organizations have gravely impeded women and girls’
access to health services, while bans on education for women and girls have
blocked almost all training of future female health care workers in the
country,” stated the HWR report.

France
condemns Taliban’s resumption of stoning and physical punishment of women in
Afghanistan
By
Fidel Rahmati
April
6, 2024
The
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the recent statements
attributed to the Taliban leadership, expressing their decision to resume the
stoning and physical punishment of Afghan women. The ministry has called on the
Taliban to revoke their policy of oppression and marginalization of women in
Afghanistan.
In
a statement, the French Foreign Ministry stated that the Taliban’s “horrific”
decision to stone women is part of a pattern of violations of women’s
fundamental rights and freedoms by this group.
France
has emphasized that the United Nations Security Council, in cooperation with
the country, considers respect for the rights of Afghan women as a precondition
for any dialogue with the Taliban.
During
its nearly three years of governance, the Taliban has introduced and enforced
extensive policies that restrict women in various aspects of life, work,
education, and participation in society.
Critics
of the Taliban and a wide array of human rights experts consider the Taliban’s
policies towards women as a form of “gender apartheid.”
Since
the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, the group has imposed several
decrees that severely restrict women’s rights and seek to erase their presence
from public life.
These
decrees include limitations on women’s education, employment, and participation
in society, effectively marginalizing them and relegating them to the confines
of their homes.
Additionally,
the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Islamic law has resulted in the
imposition of harsh punishments, including public stoning and lashings, for
perceived violations of their edicts, further exacerbating the plight of Afghan
women under their rule.

55-year-old
woman stripped, paraded in Punjab, 3 held
Apr
7, 2024
TARN
TARAN: Three persons have been arrested, and a police search is on for two more
people, for allegedly stripping a 55-year-old woman off her kurta and forcing
her to walk through her neighbourhood unclad in an incident which took place in
a Tarn Taran village on March 31, said a police official here on Saturday.A
video of the incident had since gone viral online, sparking outrage and calls
for action against the accused who allegedly humiliated the woman as vengeance
over her son eloping with a girl from their neighbourhood. The Punjab State
Commission for Women has already taken notice of the incident.
Tarn
Taran senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ashwani Kapoor said police had
arrested the mother-in-law of the victim's son, his brother-in-law and another
relative.
Their
identities have been withheld to protect the identity of the victim. The SSP
said they were on the lookout for two more accused in the case.
Kapoor
said the victim's son had a love marriage with a woman from his neighbourhood a
month ago. The SSP said the woman's mother, brother and brothers reached the
newlywed man's paternal home on March 31 and had an argument with his mother,
who was alone at home. As tempers flared, they stripped the woman off her kurta
and made her walk on the street outside.
The
woman has told the police that she was trying to escape an assault from five
people when they tore off her clothes and made her walk outside.
Based
on the complaint, the FIR was registered on Wednesday under sections 354
(assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354B
(assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354D
(stalking), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the
Indian Penal Code.

Growing
Concerns Mount Over Increase In Poverty And Malnutrition Among Women And
Children In Afghanistan
By:
Prateek Levi
April
7, 2024
The
United Nations World Food Programme in Afghanistan has issued a warning
regarding the increasing malnutrition rates among women and children in the
country, as reported by Khaama Press. According to the report, admissions for
malnutrition in Kabul have tripled over the past three years.
The
UN agency has expressed concern that the situation in Afghanistan is
deteriorating due to the surge in malnutrition. One of the primary reasons
attributed to the rise in malnutrition is the reduction in humanitarian aid
supplies to the nation.
Mishro,
a nurse at a malnutrition ward, highlighted a decline in the mental and
psychological health of women over the past two years, as well as the
escalating number of malnutrition cases in Afghanistan, as reported by Khaama
Press. She emphasized the insufficient capacity to accommodate these patients
and noted that malnourished mothers have contributed to their children’s
malnutrition.
“For
women who are malnourished, the situation is not good in 50 per cent of cases,”
she continued.
