JEDDAH:
Saudi artist Heba Ismail showcased her work at the Outer Edge Innovation Summit
in Riyadh this week.
Commenting
on her experience at the summit as one of the first Saudi artists to venture
into the Web3 art scene, she said: “Having my paintings displayed on the event
screens is a tremendous honour, offering global visibility and inspiring more
Saudi and Arab artists to explore the diverse options available for sharing
their art with the world.
“Through
my participation with Nuqtah, the first Saudi NFT platform, I am eager to
present my art on a global stage and connect with audiences in innovative
ways,” she continued.
Non-fungible
tokens — or NFTs — are, in this scenario, digital tokens that can be redeemed
for a digital art work. Ismail is exploring their potential in the Saudi art
scene.
For
Ismail, art has always been more than just a hobby — it’s been a lifelong
calling. With a professional background in dentistry, Ismail found parallels
between that meticulous work and her own creative process.
Inspired
by movements including cubism, fauvism, and surrealism, Ismail’s art is a
fusion of diverse influences and personal narratives “Each face represents a
feeling and a vision documented on a painting. I paint poetry, and often times
each piece is accompanied by a poem,” she said. “As a Saudi female, most of my
paintings represent myself and my Saudi culture, which I am proud of. The
characters are coded feelings, faces that tell a story — either joy, sadness,
or acrimony.”
Her
introduction to NFTs came in 2021, sparking a fascination with the technology
and its potential. Partnering with ChainVisory, a blockchain consultancy
company, Ismail launched her Hebaism brand, which combines NFTs and original
paintings, providing collectors with both digital and physical assets.
“I
wanted to keep the authentic classical painting process, yet the NFT world gave
me a chance to meet and discover different ways to share my art and build a
name and a brand,” she said. “It’s been an enlightening journey, uncovering the
futuristic art process and connecting with a vibrant community through Web3.”
“As
a female Saudi artist, I want to leave a mark and impact on every art platform,
putting Saudi art on the map worldwide,” she said.

Lani
Dawn, a Jewish Native American woman, posted that she was attacked by
anti-Israel protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on
Thursday night after holding a sign reading, "Hamas supporters are not
welcome on native land."
"Last
night I was violently assaulted by @UCLA 'pro-Palestine' students," wrote
Dawn on Instagram, posting a video showing the protesters attacking her and
other pro-Israel protesters.
"I
was quickly surrounded by a mob @UCLA students and EVEN @ucla faculty as a form
of intimidation. Where I continued to maintain my peaceful presence &
protest. The violence on American campuses is UNACCEPTABLE. The lack of police
intervention is UNACCEPTABLE. NON-indigenous people TARGETING and ATTACKING an
Indigenous woman while you claim to be supporting an 'indigenous liberation
movement' is UNACCEPTABLE," wrote Dawn.
UCLA
sits on land that once belonged to the Tongva tribe, according to UCLA's
website. The Tongva tribe was almost entirely forcibly relocated by Spanish
colonists in the 18th and 19th centuries. From 1846 to 1873, an estimated 80%
of Native Americans in California were killed in acts of violence or due to
extreme conditions.

Trump's
Running Mate Contender, Kristi Noem, Faces Backlash Over Dog And Goat Killing
Confession
Apr
28, 2024
NEW
DELHI: Kristi Noem, a potential candidate for Donald Trump's running mate,
sparked outrage when she admitted to the deaths of a family dog and a goat.
In
her forthcoming memoir, Kristi Noem, who is currently the governor of South
Dakota, disclosed that she killed an "untrainable" dog named Cricket
on her family's farm.
She
described the 14-month-old dog as exhibiting behavior akin to a "trained
assassin" and deemed it "dangerous to anyone she came in contact
with."
In
her memoir, portions of which were initially shared by The Guardian on Friday,
Noem further conveyed her strong dislike towards the dog, citing its
interference with a hunt and its attacks on chickens owned by a local family.
"I
realised I had to put her down," she penned, explaining that she retrieved
her firearm and subsequently guided Cricket to a gravel pit.
The
goat emitted a "disgusting, musky, rancid" odor and delighted in
chasing Noem's children, often knocking them down and spoiling their clothes.
Responding
to the excerpts, the Democratic Party under Joe Biden's leadership labeled them
"horrifying" and "disturbing," attempting to leverage the
incident in a 2024 election context. "If you prefer elected officials who
refrain from boasting about the brutal killing of their pets as a part of their
self-promotional endeavors, then heed our call - and cast your vote for
Democrat candidates," the Democratic National Committee stated, echoing
the sentiments of dog owners.
People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) condemned Kristi Noem's choice to
euthanize the dog, asserting that she lacks an understanding of essential
political principles, such as compassion and education.
Colleen
O'Brien, senior director at PETA, remarked, "Most Americans cherish their
dogs, and we anticipate that they will view Gov. Noem as extremely misguided
for allowing this lively puppy to harm chickens and then opting to end her life
rather than seeking training or locating a more suitable caregiver who could
offer her a proper environment."
"In
an official statement, she commented, 'Noem evidently lacks comprehension of
crucial political principles such as education, cooperation, compromise, and
compassion.'"
"We
love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm.
Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our
family for 25 years," she wrote on her X (formerly Twitter) account.
Her
book, titled "No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and
How We Move America Forward," is set to be published in the US on May 7.
Reports suggest that she is among the candidates being considered by Donald
Trump for his vice presidential running mate.

Thousands
rally in Australian capitals to demand gender violence justice
Apr
28, 2024
SYDNEY:
Violence against women is an "epidemic" in Australia, Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese said on Saturday, as thousands attended rallies in Sydney and
other major Australian cities urging tougher laws on gendered violence. The
rallies were spurred by a wave of violence against women that the government
says has seen a woman killed every four days this year. The rallies also
followed a mass stabbing in Sydney this month that killed six people, including
five women. Protesters demanding stronger criminal laws gathered in Sydney,
capital of New South Wales state, for a rally and then a march that closed city
streets. Some protesters carried signs that read "Respect" and
"No More Violence".
In
Adelaide, Greens Party Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said "a national
emergency response" was needed to tackle the issue. "Women are sick
and tired of being told 'yes it's bad but there's not much we can do,"'
Hanson-Young said, according to a spokesperson.
Similar
protests were scheduled across the weekend in state capitals Perth, Western
Australia; Melbourne, Victoria; Hobart, Tasmania; and Brisbane, Queensland.
Gender-based violence is an ongoing issue in Australia, a nation of 26 million.
In 2021, tens of thousands rallied over allegations of sexual abuse and
misconduct in some of the nation's highest political offices.

In
the shadow of war, Gaza women battle on
By

While
the world waits for a political resolution to the crisis, more attention must
be given to how the crisis in Gaza has impacted gender relations.
At
a conservative estimate, over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza
since Israel launched its retaliatory attack in October 2023, of which at least
70% were women or children. UN agencies estimate that nearly one million women
and girls are facing acute food insecurity. While the world waits for a
political resolution to the crisis, something which does not seem forthcoming
despite several peace summits, more attention must be given to how the crisis
in Gaza has impacted gender relations.
