BURAQ
SHABBIR
January
14, 2024
KARACHI:
Pakistani film “Wakhri,” inspired by the life of murdered social media
celebrity Qandeel Baloch, delves into the challenges faced by women in the
South Asian country, its director said this week, adding the production aimed
to convincingly reflect the ground realities.
Mirroring
the real-life tragedy of Baloch, who was killed by her brother in 2016 due to
her bold social media presence which he said had brought disrepute to the
family, the film portrays a widowed schoolteacher named Noor.
Set
in rural Pakistan, “Wakhri,” meaning “one of a kind” in Punjabi, uses Noor’s
story of social media fame to explore the broader struggles of Pakistani women.
The
film had its world premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival last
month prior to its release in Pakistan on January 5. Currently running in
cinemas across the country, it serves as a social commentary and has received
mixed response from viewers.
Iram
Parveen Bilal, the writer, director and co-producer of Wakhri, told Arab News
in an exclusive interview about her sentiments much before Baloch’s murder when
former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was killed during the election campaign in
December 2007.
“What
we are telling in the film is so realistic, we don’t understand at times if
it’s happening in the film or in real life,” she added. “With Qandeel, it just
highlighted it more. She became the portal for unraveling decades of
micro-aggression and rage and just a reaction to a basic human right which is
the right to freedom of speech.”
Baloch
became famous for her flirty and defiant posts on social media in stark
contrast with the conservative norms in Pakistan. Her brother, Muhammad Waseem,
who described her suggestive behavior as “intolerable,” and was sentenced to
life imprisonment before being released in 2022 after being pardoned by their
parents.
“I
have always picked something that not everyone would pick, which is, the truth,
the honesty [and] the reality of how we are as a society,” she told Arab News.
“Those
who are watching the character, they are falling in love with Wakhri,” she
continued. “They are fascinated by her. They want to be Wakhri.”
Bilal
said it was “exhausting” to deal with social media trolls after the film,
though she said it was also revealing in its own way.
“I
find it very interesting how [people] keep calling the film and [its central]
character very ‘bold,’” she added. “I have started realizing that a woman just
expressing herself is bold.”
Bilal,
who grew up in Pakistan but lives in the US, recalled her experience at the Red
Sea Film Festival, saying she appreciated its programming team, particularly
Kaleem Aftab, who spearheads it.
“We
actually showed [the film] to him first,” she said. “He just watched it and
started messaging me on all social media [platforms] and phone numbers. He was
like ‘I love it. When can we talk?’”
“[The
response at the Red Sea Film Festival] was really good,” she added. “Wakhri got
the most press attention. The entire jury was present in-person at the world
premiere, watching it on the big screen. It was such a lovely time. The weather
in Jeddah was pleasant. We did Umrah. I did it twice. The team did it
together.”
“I
was kind of a little critical before the film was released and I hadn’t seen
it. How would people receive it, whether they’d be able to digest it, and so
on,” Mehmood said.
“Now
as I see, when women [and] young girls walk out of the theater and the things
they have to say about Wakhri, I see a change happening [in Pakistan]. I see
they are evolving.”

Violent
Arrest Of Woman For Hijab In Tehran Sparks Outrage
14-01-2024
Iranian
police officers violently detained a woman in Tehran on Saturday for
non-compliance with mandatory hijab regulations.
According
to videos released on social media, police forces in Shahrak-e Gharb, northwest
of the capital Tehran, took the woman out of her vehicle because she was not
covering herself in the car.
In
recent years, security forces of the regime have detained numerous women and
girls across the country for failing to adhere to compulsory hijab, subjecting
them to physical abuse and harassment.
On
January 3, Iranian woman Roya Heshmati received 74 lashes for defying the
Islamic Republic’s mandatory hijab. The execution of the sentence sparked
widespread condemnation on social media.
Despite
restrictive legislation and the Islamic Republic's efforts to suppress
opponents of mandatory hijab, the struggle for women in Iran to secure the
right to choose their attire continues.
Since
the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022,
which ignited the Women, Life, Freedom protests, the act of civil disobedience
has become increasingly difficult for the regime to control. Daily images of
women without compulsory hijab continue to circulate online.
According
to the annual report by HRANA, a human rights organization, in 2023, 44 women
were detained for women's rights activism. At least 20 activists have been
sentenced to 182 months of imprisonment in addition to fines. Two individuals
have also received a sentence of 222 lashes.

Religious
scholars, tribal elders call for reopening of schools for Afghan girls
Jan
14, 2024
KABUL:
The Taliban has been called upon by religious scholars and tribal leaders to
open the country's institutions and universities to women right away, as their
basic right to attain education continues to remain compromised, TOLOnews
reported.
A
meeting on "The role of scholars and tribal elders in strengthening
relations between the nation and the system" was held on Saturday at
QasreSapidar (Sapidar Palace).
According
to TOLOnews, it was attended by over two hundred religious scholars and tribal
elders from various provinces in Afghanistan, as well as members of the
Taliban's cabinet.
"The
committee's view regarding education is that the Islamic Emirate has paid
attention to the needs of religious and contemporary sciences, but it should
open schools and universities to girls and women," TOLOnews quoted
Mohammad Hashem, representative of the southern zone of Afghanistan as saying.
Meanwhile,
a few participants requested that the Taliban consider the justifiable requests
of the Afghan people about growth, the economy, and the employment of qualified
officials.
"We
ask the Islamic Emirate to build water dams throughout Afghanistan so that it
can raise the water level and alleviate the problems of the people," said
Abdul Hadi, a representative of the South East zone of the country, according
to TOLOnews.
Taliban
leaders have also disregarded international calls for women and girls to be
given access to education and employment. They have also issued warnings to
other nations not to meddle in Afghanistan's domestic affairs.

Pakistani
women find financial independence in tech-driven, ‘salon-at-home’ service
KHURSHID
AHMED
January
13, 2024
KARACHI:
Saima Victor, a 40-year-old mother of two, has been working as a beautician in
the bustling Pakistani port city of Karachi for more than two decades. While
she earned Rs40,000 ($142) a month, her 10-hour job at a salon and the commute
to work left her with little time and energy to spend time with her family.
In
June 2022, Victor began using Singapore-based home services, Helpp, to find
clients and has since found a new path to financial independence and work-life
balance. She is now one of 35 beauticians currently registered with the app in
Karachi, largest city and commercial hub of Pakistan, where time and money are
often precious commodities.
Once
confined to the constraints of a conventional beautician job, Victor says she
is now a thriving beautician and has seen her income double through Helpp,
which offers on-demand salon, laundry, paint and air conditioning services in
Pakistan’s Karachi and Lahore cities.
“Prior
to registering with Helpp, I was working at a saloon from 11 in the morning to
9 in the evening, unable to properly take care of children. The rise of
technology has largely eased financial burden,” Victor told Arab News, packing
her bags before leaving to serve a customer.
“At
the saloon where I worked previously, my salary was fixed at Rs40,000 per
month, but since I joined the startup, the income has more than doubled to
above Rs80,000.”
Victor
gets booking orders directly from clients on her mobile phone, while her
husband, Joseph Victor, takes her to customers in different areas of the city.
Breaking
away from conventional norms of the Pakistani society, Joseph quit working as a
daily wager at an auto workshop and took on the role of a driver to ensure that
his spouse navigated her work commitments seamlessly.
This
dynamic shift has granted Victor and her husband the means to carve a niche in
the industry, while offering a modest yet empowering income.
Naveeza
Kamran, another 26-year-old beautician who joined the app in 2022, says it had
helped increase her income from Rs20,000 ($71) to more than Rs50,000 ($177).
“My
husband works at a furniture market where he sometimes gets work and sometimes
he does not,” she said, adding that through Helpp, she could share the burden
of their household expenses.
In
the face of economic challenges and rising costs of living in Pakistan, online
platforms across various sectors are emerging as a crucial lifeline for
households, providing an effective means to navigate the dire economic
situation.
The
technology is not only alleviating financial woes and time constraints of
beauticians like Victor and Kamran, but it is also rescuing customers from
waiting for long at salons, traffic jams, and transportation costs.
Sadia
Bilal, a 26-year-old teacher who booked a slot with Victor, believed economical
services within one’s comfort zone were the best option to avail through
technology.
“I
had to go to an event and it was most convenient for me to avail services
online by using the technology, instead of going out and facing huge traffic
and paying high prices,” Bilal told Arab News.
“If
we see the offline model of salon services, these beauticians are earning
around Rs10,000 to Rs25,000 per month and working abnormal hours from 12 to 15
hours daily, leaving their kids behind,” said Asra Anwar-ul-Haq, category head
at Helpp.
About
the idea behind the salon category, Haq said their startup, Helpp Technology,
saw ‘salon-at-home’ opportunity in the market after the COVID-19 pandemic,
because a lot of people had started pursuing such kind of salon services.
“Basically,
our vision, of Helpp, overall is to impact around 100,000 women in the coming
years,” she said, adding the goal was to make them financially independent.
Kamran,
who recently bought a washing machine for herself as well as gifted a motorbike
to her husband to ride to work, said she had stopped dreaming about the things
she wanted because she could now afford them.
“I
no more dream about things,” Kamran told Arab News. “Now I can afford things
since I am able to use technology that has enabled me to augment my income.”

Suppression
Of Women In Afghanistan Has Intensified: Human Rights Watch
By
Fidel Rahmati
January
13, 2024
Human
Rights Watch has said that the actions of the Taliban administration towards
women until 2023 indicate that the suppression is deepening. This organization
added that in addition to the long-standing deprivation of women of their
fundamental rights such as the right to education, work, and assembly in public
spaces, the recent suppression and detention of women have increased.
Human
Rights Watch has emphasized that the detention of protesting women in 2023,
including Julia Parsi and NedaParwani, along with their family members, shows
that the suppression of women is on the rise. According to this organization,
there are also reports of the punishment of women in prisons.
However,
Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban, had previously stated
that these women are receiving orders from outside.
Meanwhile,
a wave of arrests of young girls for “improper veiling” has recently begun in
various parts of Kabul, including the western part of the city, which has
provoked significant reactions from citizens and human rights activists.
MunisaMobaraz,
a women’s rights activist, says that the detention of young girls without a
guardian is an illegal action carried out by the Taliban, and there is no
justification for such actions by an “illegitimate” government.
It
should be noted that the United Nations Deputy Mission in Afghanistan, or
UNAMA, in its recent report based on the detention of girls on charges of
“improper veiling,” stated that they are investigating reports that claim money
is demanded in exchange for the release of these girls.
Maryam,
one of the girls in western Kabul, expresses concerns that the goal of these
detentions is to create fear and terror among girls, forcing them into a
sedentary lifestyle and the policies of the previous Taliban era.
Human
Rights Watch continues to highlight the actions of the Taliban over the past
two years, including the closure of women’s salons and the prohibition of their
presence in public places like parks and travel without a guardian.
According
to this organization, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of the United
Nations in Afghanistan presented a report to the United Nations Human Rights
Council in June, detailing the widespread and systematic discrimination that
women and girls in Afghanistan face, concluding that this is “gender-based
sexual harassment and a framework of institutionalized gender apartheid.”
