Islamophobic Abuse Forces Labour’s
Muslim MP, Apsana Begum, To Flee Conference

Muslim female Labour MP, Apsana Begum,
has been forced to flee the Labour conference after being subjected to a
torrent of Islamophobic abuse and due to concerns over her safety. The attack
on Begum is said to have been sparked by misinformation spread by a Tory MP,
Greg Hands, over her support for Palestine.
According to Novara Media, Hands, who is
Chair of the Tory party, wrote to his Labour counterpart, AnnelieseDodds, on
Monday, demanding that Begum have the whip withdrawn. He claimed that the MP
for Labour and Limehouse had “tweeted her ‘solidarity’ with the Palestine
Solidarity Campaign (PSC)”.
Begum had not, in fact, tweeted
anything; instead, the PSC had thanked Begum via its own X account for her
pre-arranged visit to the stall on Saturday at the Labour conference. Citing
the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)
definition of anti-Semitism, Hands claimed that the PSC is anti-Semitic and
urged Labour not only to remove the pro-Palestine organisation but also to
discipline Begum.

The letter to Dodds has been shared on
the social media platform X.
“You have said you will clean up your
party, yet reports are that you will not take action to suspend the Labour Whip
against Apsana Begum or remove the PSC from your conference,” Hands said in his
letter pressuring Labour to take action. “To have a Labour MP publicly
associating with such an organisation raises questions about the Party’s commitment
to maintaining ethical standards and responsible conduct within its ranks.”
Hands’ letter unleashed a torrent of
misogynistic and Islamophobic abuse at Begum, both online and offline, Novara
Media reported. Some of it describing Begum as a “bitch”, “female slave” and
“part of the caliphate”. The attacks, which are currently being investigated by
the police, led Begum’s staff to fear for her safety. Begum decided to leave
the conference on Monday.
The PSC stall was visited by Labour Lord
Alf Dubs, a Jewish Holocaust survivor and refugee rights advocate, as well as
several other MPs.
While a number of Labour MPs have
expressed solidarity with Begum, Keir Starmer and members of his shadow cabinet
have yet to say anything about the abuse. Begum has not only been faced with
shocking Islamophobic attack, she has also been subjected to a witch hunt by
Starmer’s Labour. The prospect of de-selection remains a possibility.

Condition Of Hijab-Less Girl, Armita
Geravand, Injured In Alleged Tehran Metro Assault Deteriorates

11 October 2023
TEHRAN, Iran — The health of a
16-year-old Iranian girl who has been in a coma since an alleged assault on the
Tehran metro has “deteriorated” in the hospital, local media reported
Wednesday.
According to the state news agency IRNA,
Armita Geravand fainted because of low blood pressure.
But a Kurdish-focused rights group has
alleged that she was hurt in a clash with female police officers on the
network, for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.
“Despite the continued efforts of the
medical staff at Fajr Hospital, Armita Geravand’s relatively stable vital signs
have changed and deteriorated… over the past few days,” said Borna news agency,
which is affiliated with the Iranian Sports Ministry.
“However, the medical team’s efforts to
improve Armita Geravand’s condition continue,” it added.
Geravand lives in Tehran but hails from
the city of Kermanshah, some 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the Iranian
capital, in Kurdish-populated western Iran.
Western countries, including Germany and
the United States, and rights groups have raised concerns about the case after
a purported video of the incident circulated on social media.
In September last year, the death of
another Kurdish-Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, for allegedly breaching the Islamic
Republic’s strict dress code for women sparked wide-ranging protests.
Amini was arrested near a Tehran subway
station.
Armita, who was with friends and
apparently not wearing a headscarf, is said to have been pushed into the metro
train by female police agents.
Last week, Iran’s Foreign Ministry
spokesman, Nasser Kanani, criticized Western comments on the case as
“interventionist.”
The head of the Tehran subway system has
also denied there was any verbal or physical altercation between the teenager
and passengers or staff.
IRNA later published interviews with two
girls who said they were Geravand’s friends who confirmed the account.

US Envoy For Afghanistan Highlights
Afghan Girl Oppression On ‘Day Of The Girl’
Fidel Rahmati
October 12, 2023
US Representative for Afghanistan Highlights
Taliban’s Severe Oppression of Afghan Girls on International Day of the Girl
Child.
Thomas West called on the global
community to listen to the voices of Afghan girls, emphasizing that the “secure
and bright future” of Afghanistan relies on them.
The US Representative for Afghanistan,
Thomas West, said on Thursday’s social media platform X, “On the Day of the
Girl, we must remember the millions of Afghan girls who face the most severe
form of oppression in Afghanistan, unparalleled anywhere else in the world.”
He said that nowhere else in the world
do we see half of girls students deprived of education.
“Nowhere else have half of middle and
high school students been deprived of education, which will have grave
repercussions on their mental health, families, communities, and the country’s
economic future”, he said.
Meanwhile, he added that “The Taliban bear
responsibility for this oppression.”
He emphasized that “the global community
must continue to support Afghan girls, listen to their voices, and empower
them. Ensuring Afghanistan’s bright and secure future hinges on this very
action.”
Since returning to power in August 2021,
the Taliban has imposed extensive restrictions on women and girls in
Afghanistan. Higher education institutions are closed to girls beyond the sixth
grade, and they have been deprived of access to universities.
October 11th is recognized as the
“International Day of the Girl” by the United Nations and is celebrated
worldwide. This day is an essential reminder of girls’ challenges and the need
to promote gender equality and girls’ rights globally. It is a day to reflect
on girls’ unique
struggles and opportunities, especially
in countries like Afghanistan, where their rights have been severely curtailed.

Termination Of 26-Week Pregnancy: We
Can’t Kill A Child, Says Supreme Court Of India
12th October 2023
New Delhi: “We cannot kill a child,” the
Supreme Court observed on Thursday while hearing the Centre’s plea seeking
recall of its order allowing a married woman, a mother of two, to terminate her
26-week pregnancy.
While making it clear that the top court
has to balance the rights of the unborn child, a “living and viable foetus”,
with its mother’s right of decisional autonomy, a bench headed by Chief Justice
D Y Chandrachud asked the Centre and her lawyer to talk to the woman about the
possibility of retaining the pregnancy for a few weeks more.
“Do you want us to tell the doctors at
AIIMS to stop the fetal heart?” the bench, also comprising Justices J B
Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, asked the counsel appearing for the 27-year-old
woman.
When the counsel responded with a “no”,
the bench said when the woman has waited for over 24 weeks, can’t she retain
the foetus for some more weeks so there is the possibility of a healthy child
being born.
The bench has posted the matter for
resumed hearing at 10.30 AM on Friday.
The matter came up before the CJI-led
bench after a two-judge bench on Wednesday gave a split verdict on the Centre’s
plea for recall of its October 9 order granting permission to the woman to
terminate her 26-week pregnancy.
The apex court had on October 9 allowed
the woman to proceed with medical termination of pregnancy after taking note
that she was suffering from depression and was not in a position to raise a
third child “emotionally, financially and mentally”.

Priya YashwantTadam A Tribal Girl From
ChandrapurRaises The Bar, Gets Maharashtra Govt Grant For LLM Degree In London
Oct 12, 2023
CHANDRAPUR: A 24-year-old tribal girl,
Priya YashwantTadam's story, is one of determination and community support.
Priya who hails from nondescript Bhanapur village in Chandrapur district's
Saoli tehsil, aspired to become a lawyer and study LLM from London. And, as
luck would have it, she received a ₹37.61 lakh scholarship from the Maharashtra government
recently.
Bhanapur village is nestled amidst lush
forests and comprising just 40 families. Since there was no school in their
village, Priya and her younger sister Shivani used to walk to a primary school
in Asolamendha in Saoli tehsil which was nearly two kilometres away.
"Later we shifted her to one of our relatives place in Bramhapuri and then
to Gadchiroli to complete matriculation," Priya's father YaswhantTadam - a
marginal farmer - said.
After completing her Std 12 education in
Saoli 22 km away, Priya came to Nagpur to pursue BA-LLB degree at the Dr
Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law.
"Our father toiled hard to provide
us with good education. While I completed my law degree, my sister completed
her BTech in Nagpur. While doing internship under advocate Sachin Zoting at the
district court and high court at Nagpur, I nurtured my dream of studying LLM in
London," Priya told TOI.
An acquaintance in Nagpur Dinesh Sheram
helped Priya with the admission process in Queen Mary University of London.
Another acquaintance Umesh Uike helped her in getting her marksheet, transfer
certificate and provisional degree in quick time as her results were a bit
delayed.
Priya Tadam’s scholarship proposal faced
several weeks of delay. “October 9 was the last date of my enrolment at the
Queen Mary University and my scholarship proposal was not cleared by the
Maharashtra tribal development department. I frantically sent mails to the
university urging for extension. Even as extension came, my scholarship
proposal remained in limbo, as the meeting of tribal development department
scheduled to be held on September 29, was cancelled as it was declared
holiday,” Priya explained the hurdles she faced. Chandrapur guardian minister
Sudhir Mungantiwar and leader of opposition in state assembly Vijay Wadettiwar
intervened. “Wadettiwar directly took us to the chief minister’s chamber and apprised
him that I could lose a chance of studying abroad. CM immediately issued
directives to hold a meeting. Mungantiwar, in London on an official tour,
called his OSD in Mumbai and ensured that I get all the help in the secretariat
and my sanction letter of `37.61 lakh scholarship was issued on the same day,”
Priya said. Priya claimed that the fortress of her dream had her family as a
rock-solid foundation. “It was quite difficult for my family to gather the
deposit amount necessary for enrolment, but my father, despite financial
constraints, somehow managed it. My sister who worked with a private firm as
engineer resigned from her job to ensure document processing for admission and
necessary preparations, while I went to Pune to complete my visa formality,”
she said. Priya thanked local leader AlkaAtram who helped in apprising minister
Mungantiwar about her problems. She also expressed gratitude to her friends
advocates Nikita Bahadure, DhirajNikure, TejaswiniBahadure who stood steadfast
with here during two years of struggle and kept her motivating. Priya is now
awaiting visa – which she hopes to get it in a day or two and to fly to London
immediately. Priya’s inspiring story only highlights the immense potential
hidden in remote corners of our nation.

hijab in J&K’s Bandipora district
October 10, 2023
Srinagar : A teacher was booked on
Tuesday for allegedly tearing the hijab of a student in Jammu & Kashmir’s
Bandipora district.
Official sources said that a girl
student lodged a police complaint alleging that a teacher approached her while
she was seated in the classroom and forcibly removed and tore her hijab.
She alleged that the same teacher had
been harassing her and her classmates for a while, but today he forcibly
removed her hijab.
The student said that she had discussed
the harassment issue with her parents previously.
“On one occasion when the girl’s mother
visited the school regarding the matter, the accused teacher confronted her and
shouted at her and questioned her presence on the school premises,” the sources
said.
“The student said she had repeatedly
reported this issue to the school principal and other staff members, but
regrettably, no action was ever taken”, they said.
