Petraeus says he'll consider Pakistan criticisms

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Washington's new top war general said he would consider rising Pakistani criticism of U.S. missile strikes on suspected militant targets in the Muslim nation's unstable border regions.

Pakistani military and government leaders told Gen. David Petraeus that such cross-border strikes fanned anti-American sentiment in an allied country considered vital to success in the war on terror. Petraeus was likely to hear more of the same in meetings set for Tuesday.

In an interview with CNN, Petraeus confirmed the Pakistani criticisms in Monday's sessions.

"In fact, we got certain messages with each of those we talked to today and some of those were very clear and we have to take those on board," CNN quoted Petraeus as saying. "The tone of the conversation was very frank and very forthright, as it should be," he added later.

Petraeus was in Pakistan as part of his first international trip since taking over U.S. Central Command last week. He has met with President Asif Ali Zardari and army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani among other senior leaders so far.

The U.S. is concerned about Islamic militants using pockets of Pakistan's northwest region as sanctuaries from which to support the escalating insurgency in neighboring Afghanistan.

Complaints from U.S. commanders about Pakistan's efforts to counter the insurgents have been accompanied by a surge of missile strikes on suspected Taliban and al-Qaida targets, despite strong condemnation in Pakistan.

According to the state-run APP news agency, Zardari told Petraeus and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher that the attacks from drone aircraft should be stopped.

"Continuing drone attacks on our territory, which result in loss of precious lives and property, are counterproductive and difficult to explain by a democratically elected government," Zardari was quoted as saying.

Zardari said the government was "under pressure to react more aggressively" to the strikes.

Washington is suspected in at least 17 missile strikes in Pakistan since August.

In September, a U.S. ground assault in a tribal region in Pakistan's northwest spurred particular outrage. Days later, Pakistani troops challenged two American helicopters operating near the border and U.S. and Pakistani ground forces in the area exchanged fire.

There have been no reports of additional ground assaults since then and Petraeus has given few hints so far about what strategy he will follow.

Pakistan's government is mindful of already widespread opposition in the country to its ties with Washington. However, it has acknowledged its dependence on Western aid in the face of looming economic problems and taken a tough public stance against terrorism and extremism.

Pakistani Defense Minister Ahmad Mukhtar said in a statement after his meeting with Petraeus that the missile strikes could "create outrage and uproar among the people."

But his statement also said that both sides "stressed the need for enhanced cooperation to eliminate the scourge of terrorism."

Meanwhile, Zardari will try to persuade Saudi Arabia to allow his cash-strapped, militancy wracked nation to defer payments for oil when he visits the kingdom Tuesday, a spokesman said.

Pakistan needs billions in outside assistance to avoid defaulting on its international loans and is seeking help from the U.S., Saudi Arabia and other allies to avoid turning to the International Monetary Fund, a politically unpopular move that analysts say is unavoidable regardless.

High inflation, a sinking currency and the Islamist insurgency also are hampering progress in the impoverished nation of 170 million. The young civilian government hopes Pakistan's front-line role in the war on terror will spur the international community to prevent its economic downfall.

Army the Political Parties and Islamic Jamaats had been the key players in Pakistan Hx. They still are struggling to prove their worth. Every now & then among them pops up a shrewd orator and divide this Nation into fragments in the name of National Security or Economic stability or Religious threats and beliefs.

Starting from Ayub and reaching to Musharraf one thing was common among them i.e. their background was not of an elite class. So when they got the chance; they grabbed it. These power hungry and complex personalities used the Institution to remain in power. They were duly supported by the Waderas, Chaudaries, Maliks and Khans. Plus they got the certificate from the religious elements. Plus the vested interest felt comfortable to deal with them for their agendas. In all this story Army as a institution was just used by all the stake holders.

So to be precise what is happening now is the collective responsibility of all of us as a nation. We selected our politicians and religious gurus who in turn supported these ill minds.

Look what we as a nation did when we were given the chance select the representatives. What these representatives did to this country and what they are doing now. Had we not welcomed the Looters back in our country? Had we not been listening to Looters on phone sitting outside and giving advise to us to safe Pakistan? Are we not been hijacked by Religious fanatics. The people who had taught us their version of Islam. Is this the fault of Politics or Religion? No. For some black sheeps in Politics we cannot blame the whole lot. For some greedy Mullahs we cannot deny the role of Maulivi and his contributions.

All we need to do is to Educate ourselves and our coming generation. We are in a state of transition. We need to come up with some positive and concrete solutions to our problems.

Please start by giving knowledge based upbringing to your children. The children who are our future.
