Third Lesson On The Horrific
Consequences Of Desecrating Ramadan
A sign of goodness and happiness is
to recognise and embrace the magnificence and holiness of the distinguishing
marks (Sha'air plural of Shi'ar) of Islam, religious symbols, virtue,
and goodness. On the other hand, it is quite humiliating and unfortunate to
disrespect these things and violate their sanctity.
While Ramadan is held in high regard
and is associated with numerous virtues, it is also mentioned that
disrespecting it will result in terrible punishment. It appears in a
revered hadith.
In this holy month, anyone who
consumes any intoxicating substance, maligns a believer, or commits a
transgression, Allah, the Almighty, will nullify the reward for their good
deeds for a full year. It is the month of Allah Almighty. Allah has set apart
eleven months for you to enjoy the blessings and get pleasure in them, and He
has reserved one month solely for Himself. Thus, have a fear of
desecrating the blessed month of Ramadan. (Al-Mu’ajam al-Awsat, Volume:
2, Page: 414)
The Mercy of the Universe, Prophet
(peace be upon him), stated regarding the serious repercussions of committing a
sin during the beautiful month of Ramadan:
As long as my Ummah continues
to honour the privileges of the glorious month of Ramadan, it will not suffer
humiliation or disgrace. It was said, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon
him)! “They would suffer humiliation and disgrace if they fail to uphold
the blessings of Ramadan. What does it mean?” He said, “Committing Haram [the
forbidden] deeds in this month [is a cause of humiliation and disgrace].” Then
he said, “Whoever commits adultery or consumes alcohol in this month, Allah
Almighty and all the angels will curse him until the next Ramadan. Hence, if
this person passes away before the start of the following Ramadan, he won't
have any good deeds to keep him from the flames of hell. People must
therefore be afraid that, just as virtues rise during Ramadan compared to other
months, so do sins.” (Al-Mu'jam al-Sagheer by Al-Tabarani, Vol. 9, p.
60)
The Gloomy Surroundings of A Grave
Ameerul Muminin Mawla Ali (may
Allah be pleased with him) once paid a visit to the graves in the cemetery of
Kufa. There was a recently excavated grave. He was curious about its condition.
So he prayed before Allah, the All-Powerful:
“O Allah Almighty! Reveal to me the
circumstances of this dead person.” His plea was immediately accepted in the
court of Allah Almighty and then all the veils that stood between him and that
deceased person were removed. He now saw the horrifying scene of the grave. He
observed that the deceased was screaming for help to him while being consumed
by flames. The dead person uttered,
یَا عَلِیُّ! اَنَا غَرِیْقُٗ فِی
النَّارِ وَ حَرِیْقُٗ فِی النَّارِ۔
“O Ali! I am drowning in fire and
burning in flames of fire.”
Hazrat Sayyiduna Ali (may
Allah be pleased with him) became uneasy due to the horrifying sight of
the grave and the agonising cries of the deceased. In the
court of his compassionate Creator, Hazrat Ali stretched out his hands and
humbly pleaded for the forgiveness of the dead person. A voice from beyond
the veil spoke:
“O Ali! You shouldn't ask for his
pardon because, despite his fast, he used to desecrate Ramadan and continued to
engage in sinful behaviour even during the holy month of Ramadan. He used to
fast throughout the day and commit sins at night.”
Hearing this, Hazrat Ali was even
more grieved and dropped down in prostration while sobbing and
uttering the following:
“O My Lord, Allah Almighty, You hold
my respect in Your Power. O My Lord, this servant has summoned me with great
expectation! Hence, please spare this unfortunate man and don't make me look
bad in his eyes. Have mercy on his plight.” While Hazrat Ali (may Allah be
pleased with him) was sobbing and pleading with Allah Almighty, his sincere
prayer caused the river of Allah's mercy to stir, and the heavenly call to
appear at once:
“O Ali! You prayed, and we pardoned
him. Consequently, the punishment for the deceased was forgiven.” (Aneesul
Waai’zeen, p.52)
Kyon Na Mushkil Kusha Kahun Tum Ko
Tumne Meri Bigdi Banai Hai
(Why don't I call you the Remover of
Hardships? Your presence has eliminated my hardships.)
This anecdote demonstrates how vital
it is for Muslims to respect Ramadan. May Allah, the Almighty, protect us all
from disrespecting Ramadan and bestow upon us the ability to do so. Aameen
