The
Thumbnails of Indian TV Channels May Complicate The Matter Further
Main
Points
1. 8 ex- Navy
personnel were sentenced to death by a Qatari court.
2. They were
reportedly spying for Israel.
3. The Indians
were arrested on August 30, 2022 by Qatar intelligence agency.
4. Qatar claims
it has electronic evidence against the convicts.
5. Indian
retired personnel were working with a security services company.
--------
India was
shocked to hear about the news of death sentence given to 8 ex -Navy personnel
of India by a lower court of Qatar. They had been working with Al Dahra
Security Services, private company owned by Al Khamis Al Ajami who had worked
with Oman Air Force. The company had a tie up with Qatar Army and provided
training to its naval officers. For that purpose, the company had acquired the
services of 8 ex- Indian navy officers who had taken voluntary retirement to
search for better career prospects. According to sources, they were working on
induction of Italian submarine with stealth technology in Qatar Navy.
All was going
well but on the night of 30 August all the 8 Indians were arrested by the
Qatari intelligence. According to media reports, they were arrested for
espionage. In a bizarre turn of events, the Indians were not spying for India
but reportedly for Israel.
The hearing
of their case started in March 2023 and on 26th October 2023, a lower court of
Qatar sentenced them to death sentence. The news shocked all Indians as well as
the government.
The news
shocked the nation because all the ex -Navy personnel were high ranking navy
officers. They are:
Capt.
Navtej Gill, Capt. Saurabh Vashisht, Comm. Purnendu Tiwari, Capt. Birendra
Kumar Verma, Comm. Suganakar Pakala, Comm. Sanjiv Gupta, Comm. Amit Nagpal and
sailor Rajesh.
They all
had a good track record in the Indian Navy and Comm. Purnendu Tiwari was
honoured with Pravasi Bhartiya Samman ( Non-resident Indian Award) for
promoting Indo-Qatari relations.
The Indians
have been lodged in isolation cells and their bail pleas have been rejected.
They are awaiting death.
This is a
sensitive issue and the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister of India have
started diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the ex-Navy personnel. This
needs a very cautious approach on part of India. Any wrong move may jeopardise
the lives of the Indians in Qatari jails.
But
unfortunately, India's mainstream TV channels have adopted the same
irresponsible and mischievous approach they do with the issues relating to the
Muslims of India. In the thumbnails of their YouTube channels, some Indian TV
channels have posted provocative and unsavoury remarks against the government
of Qatar that may worsen the situation. The language of the remarks is very
unprofessional and vulgar. Here are the English translations of remarks of some
thumbnails:

These are
some of the thumbnails of YouTube channels of Indian TVs. These remarks are not
only vulgar and provocative but also childish and stupid. It appears that the
editors of these TV channels do not care for the lives of the Navy personnel or
want them to be executed. They do not understand that any wrong move or gesture
from India may send a wrong signal to the Qatari government and further
jeopardise the lives of convicted Indians. Some journalists have already held
Indian media and the Islamophobic rantings of Hindutva lobby for making attacks
on Islam and Muslims for this extreme step by Qatar. Akash Banerji of Deshbhakt
YouTube channel says that it was Qatar who was the first to demand an apology
from India for Nupur Sharma's blasphemous remarks against the Prophet. He says
that 8 lakh Indians work in Qatar and our interests are linked with Qatar.
Other journalists also hold the view that we make Islamophobic remarks little
realising that it might hurt us sooner or later. During the ongoing Israel
Hamas war, our media took sides with Israel without realising that Qatar is
involved in this war indirectly as it hosts offices of Hamas.
Journalists
and political analysts have also criticised the government for not doing
anything worthwhile for the last 14 months. It has woken up after the death sentence
has already been given. However, the sentence has been pronounced by a lower
court and it has to be ratified by the Constitutional court. Therefore, India
has some time left to do last minute diplomacy. But if the TV channels continue
to make provocative and threatening remarks, India may lose this battle.
