For the initial few days of the Corona fear and the impending lockdown, we all stood united against this deadly disease. We were all one, there was no religion, no hate speech, no abuse. It felt nice and reassuring. Finally, we were just Indians, up and against COVID-19. And then the Tableeghi Jamaat fiasco took place, and lo’ behold, we are back to Muslim bashing, never-ending divisive debates on television and anti-Muslim social media trends and hashtags are at an all-time high.
The Tableeghi Jamaat incident was unfortunate and highly irresponsible on the part of the convenors. Most Muslims have condemned it and have called for the strictest action against them. But the vitriol that has been flowing ever since is repulsive to the core. Many people argue that other gatherings at much bigger scales have also taken place, but none have received such a backlash since they weren’t Muslims. Agree. But Muslims will also have to realize that they need to grow beyond the religious texts and be scientifically aware. We have to reclaim our beautiful religion from the clutches of Mullahs and clerics like Maulana Saad.
A genuine, truly educated and well-informed cleric will never pitch you against anyone. Most of the self-proclaimed Mullahs, think they know it all since they have learned the entire Quran phrase by phrase, word by word. OBJECTIONABLE! Simply because the world doesn’t work like that, there is science and we have to accept it. Educate, enlighten yourself and the community. Nowhere in The Quran is it mentioned, that you go against the law of the land. In fact, there are many instances in Quran, which comprise many scientifically accurate statements. Seek knowledge is an oft repeated phrase in Quran.
“Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of the night and the day; in the sailing of ships through the ocean, for the profit of mankind; in the rain which Allah sends down from the skies, and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dead; in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth; in the change of the winds, and the clouds which they trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth; here indeed are signs for people that are wise” (Quran 2:164)
So, stop being the prisoners of your religious preachers. They have just created a huge divide in the name of Allah, induced fear and hatred against the so-called Kaafirs. We have to accept our mistakes, our shortcomings and join hands towards a progressive Muslim society. Haters are going to hate, but don’t give them valid reasons! We have to bring in the change from within. Reforms at the grass-root level are the need of the hour. And we cannot do it alone, a single Muslim cannot reform the entire community. Even Allah will not save you if you don’t save yourself. Stop feeling victimized and persecuted. Join hands, be strong and fight this battle with your head held high. Every religion has its share of fanatics, but it is up to us, how to deal with them, how to contain them and how to not let them ruin the image of the entire community.
As for the Muslim haters, the abusers, the trolls, you don’t scare us. We know we have an enormous issue at hand, and we are aware that it is only us, Muslims, who can bring the change. So, you can keep your hate to yourself. It makes no difference to us. You thrive on biases, fake news, demeaning narratives, so be it. You have your own God and Karma that will take care of you. Just leave us alone, to fight our battles and destroy our demons. And we are not alone. Hard times reveal your true friends and we have people who know our pain, our sufferings and the helplessness of this all and have come out in massive support to us, irrespective of their religion.
I know the road ahead is not easy and we will have multiple battles to conquer, but together we will succeed. We must.
