The blessings, pleasures, and conveniences we enjoy are entirely due to Allah's unending kindness. If we are grateful to Allah Azzawajal for the blessings we receive, Allah Azzawajal promises in the Quran that not only will our blessings last longer, but He would also increase His bounty on us. Anyone who considers seriously why blessings are removed and diseases and curses are brought about would undoubtedly recognize their causes. There are some things that deprive us of our blessings. The following are a few examples.

Ungratefulness

Allah Azzawajal becomes enraged when you are unappreciative of the blessings you receive. Ungratefulness is something that Allah Azzawajal despises. The Quran declares:  “Remember Me; I will remember you. And thank Me, and never be ungrateful...” (2:152)

Gratitude multiplies your blessings, whilst ingratitude reduces them. We must be grateful in all circumstances, whether it concerns our clothing, home, food and drink, everyday affairs, or matters related to our husbands. This will ensure that Allah Azzawajal does not disapprove of us and that we do not lose His benefits.

Committing Oppression

Allah Azzawajal does not like oppressors. Because of the evil of oppression, people can be plagued by a variety of tragedies and lose their blessings. "Being unjust to people often becomes a cause of losing Iman," Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Warraq remarked. (Tanbihul Ghafilin, p.204)

Despite having the kingdom of Egypt and rivers flowing beneath him, Pharaoh transgressed and harmed people. He had valuables and a respectable position, but he and his men were arrogant in the region, acting unjustly.

He toiled away in the area, contaminating it and destroying crops and animals. He slaughtered children, exiled males, and kept women alive in order to employ them. So, what happened to him? Allah says:

“And indeed the Noble Messengers came to the people of Pharaoh. They denied all Our signs, We, therefore, seized them – the seizure of the Most Honourable, the All-Powerful.” (54:41-42)

“And Firaun, and those before him, and the dwellings that were inverted and thrown, had brought error. They, therefore, disobeyed the Noble Messengers of their Lord – so He seized them with an intense seizure. (69:9-10)

“We, therefore, got them out from the gardens and water springs. And from treasures and nice houses...” (26:57-58)

The event of Pharaoh demonstrates that the evil of disobedience causes blessings to be taken away.

Another example is Qaaroon, the haughty and oppressive man who, despite receiving such valuables as the keys that would burden a band of strong men, remained unthankful and oppressed his people. Allah Azzawajal says in the Quran:

“Indeed Qaroon was from the people of Moosa – he then oppressed them; and We gave him so many treasures that their keys were a heavy burden for a strong group; when his people said to him, “Do not show off – indeed Allah does not like the boastful.” (26:76)

“And seek the abode of the Hereafter with the wealth that Allah has given you, and do not forget your part in this world, and do favours (to others) the way Allah has favoured you, and do not seek to cause turmoil in the earth; indeed Allah does not like the mischievous.” (26:77)

“He said, “I got this only due to a knowledge I have”; and does he not know that before him Allah destroyed the generations who were stronger than him and more in number? And there is no questioning of the guilty regarding their sins.” (26:78)

“He, therefore, came before his people in his pomp; said those who desired the worldly life, “If only we were to get what Qaroon has been given – he is indeed very fortunate.” (26:79)

“And said those who were given the knowledge, “Woe to you – the reward of Allah is better for one who accepts faith and does good deeds, and only those who are patient will receive it.” (26:80)

“We, therefore, buried him and his house into the earth; so he had no group to help save him from Allah; nor could he take revenge.” (26:76-81)

Pride and Arrogance

Pride and arrogance squander blessings as well. According to Sayyiduna Salama ibn Akwa, when the beloved Prophet saw a man eating with his left hand, he said, "Eat with your right hand." With pride, the man stated that he couldn't eat with his right hand. The Prophet said, "May Allah make it so." After that, he couldn't get his right hand to his mouth. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 5268)

Sins

Constantly sinning, not fearing Allah Azzawajal, not repenting, and defying Him might lead to the loss of bounties and the incurrence of His wrath. When the Israelites refused to eat the heavenly food that was sent down to them, they were punished. Whatever food they had gathered for the next day was burned, and they were left without nourishment. As a result, the beloved Prophet declared:

“If it were not for the Israelites, food would never spoil nor would meat rot.”(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 3651). From that day forward, food began to decay and meat began to rot. As a result, we learn that disobedience causes blessings to be taken away.

May Allah Azzawajal bestow upon us the ability to shun any things that deprive us of blessings!
