Abstract:
Peace is the foundation of progress and prosperity in any society. Without peace, development stops and fear, hatred, and disorder spread. Today, moral decline among youth and the lack of mutual respect are mainly caused by ignoring peace, justice, and human dignity. Fear, violence, biased thinking, injustice, and hurting religious feelings seriously damage social harmony. World religions strongly oppose such conditions and provide clear guidance for establishing peace and protecting humanity.
Islam presents peace as a complete way of life based on justice, mercy, tolerance, and respect for human dignity. Christianity teaches peace through love, forgiveness, patience, and non-violence. Judaism connects peace with justice, moral law, and collective responsibility. Indian religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism emphasise inner peace, non-violence, compassion, service, and social harmony. All religions agree that true peace begins within the human heart and spreads to society. Religious teachings, if followed sincerely, can help build a peaceful, just, and humane world

Peace is the foundation of progress and stability. Without peace, education, economic development, religious life, and social cooperation cannot flourish. In an atmosphere of fear and violence, people are unable to plan for the future or contribute positively to society. History clearly shows that societies suffering from constant conflict and insecurity fall behind in all areas of life.
There are many causes behind the breakdown of peace. These include injustice, discrimination, biased attitudes, hate speech, and actions that deliberately frighten or humiliate certain communities. Hurting religious feelings, spreading hopelessness, ignoring fairness, and forcing one’s culture or way of life on others also damage social harmony. Unfortunately, such negative behaviours are often promoted knowingly or unknowingly. To build a peaceful society, it is necessary to avoid these harmful attitudes and actively promote tolerance, justice, and mutual respect.
When we study world religions, it becomes clear that none of them support violence, chaos, or fear. Every major religion teaches peace, moral responsibility, and respect for human life. Religions aim to protect society from moral and social dangers and guide people towards justice, compassion, and harmony.
In today’s world, efforts for peace can become more effective if they are connected with religious teachings. Religious values have a deep influence on human behaviour and conscience. When religious teachings are followed sincerely, they help create peaceful individuals, which in turn leads to peaceful societies.
Islam presents peace as a complete way of life. It does not limit peace to the absence of war but connects it with justice, mercy, tolerance, and respect for human dignity. The very word “Islam” is derived from roots meaning peace and security, which shows the central importance of peace in this religion.
Islam aims to remove fear and anxiety from human life. The Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ place great emphasis on peace and security. One famous saying of the Prophet states: “A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands others are safe.” This teaching highlights that peace begins with individual character. A person who does not harm others through words or actions becomes a source of peace for society.
Justice holds a central place in the Islamic concept of peace. Islam teaches that lasting peace is impossible without justice. The Qur’an commands believers to act justly in all circumstances, even when justice goes against personal interests or emotions. It also teaches that hatred for any group should never lead to injustice. This principle provides a strong foundation for social and global peace.
Islam also strongly supports religious tolerance and freedom of belief. The Qur’an clearly states that there is no compulsion in religion. This shows that Islam promotes dialogue, wisdom, and good conduct instead of force and violence. Protecting human life, property, and honor is considered sacred in Islam. Treating all people with kindness and fairness, regardless of religion or background, is an essential part of Islamic peace.
Like Islam, Christianity and Judaism place great importance on peace. In both religions, peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a moral and spiritual condition connected with inner reform and social responsibility.
In Christianity, peace is deeply rooted in love and forgiveness. The teachings of Jesus Christ emphasize love for others, including enemies. Christianity teaches patience, tolerance, and responding to evil with goodness. The well-known teaching of Jesus to “If anyone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. “reflects the values of non-violence and self-control. According to Christian belief, true peace comes from purity of heart and a strong relationship with God, which then appears in society as love, kindness, and goodwill
Judaism presents peace as closely linked with justice, law, and collective responsibility. Jewish scriptures strongly emphasize justice as the foundation of peace. The prophets of Judaism condemned oppression, injustice, and moral corruption, considering them the main obstacles to peace. Judaism teaches that both individuals and society must follow moral laws to create a stable and peaceful community. Protecting the weak, fulfilling social duties, and obeying divine commands are essential elements of peace in Jewish thought.
While Christianity highlights love, forgiveness, and non-violence, Judaism focuses more on justice, law, and social ethics. However, both religions agree that peace is only possible through moral values, respect for human dignity, and obedience to God.
Religions that originated in India—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—also offer strong teachings on peace. These religions emphasize non-violence, inner peace, compassion, tolerance, and social harmony. In Indian religious thought, peace is not limited to external conditions but is closely connected with inner balance and moral purity.
In Hinduism, peace is based on the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) and dharma (moral duty). Hindu scriptures teach self-control, truthfulness, patience, and respect for all living beings. The famous idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the whole world is one family,” reflects a universal vision of peace. According to Hindu thought, true peace is achieved when individuals correct their behaviour and respect the rights of others.
Buddhism connects peace with the removal of human suffering. Gautama Buddha taught that desire, anger, and ignorance are the root causes of conflict and unrest. The Eightfold Path provides guidance for right thinking, right behaviour, and right living, leading to mental and social peace. Compassion and loving-kindness are central values in Buddhism. Because of its strong emphasis on non-violence and tolerance, Buddhism is widely recognized as a religion of peace.
Jainism presents one of the strongest and strictest teachings on non-violence. The principle of ahimsa applies to all living beings, without exception. Jainism teaches that harm should be avoided not only in actions but also in thoughts, words, and intentions. The message of “live and let live” forms the core of Jain ethics and promotes peaceful coexistence.
Sikhism connects peace with justice, equality, and service to humanity. Guru Nanak rejected hatred, caste discrimination, and oppression and promoted brotherhood and social equality. In Sikhism, peace does not mean remaining silent in the face of injustice. Standing against oppression and supporting the weak are also considered essential for peace. Practices such as seva (selfless service) and langar beautifully demonstrate social harmony and practical peace.
The concept of peace in world religions is based on shared values such as inner purity, non-violence, justice, love, compassion, and social harmony. All religions teach that true peace begins within the human heart and then spreads to family, society, and the wider world.
If religious teachings are followed sincerely, they can help create a peaceful, just, and humane world. In an age filled with conflict and intolerance, the message of peace found in world religions remains deeply relevant and urgently needed.
