Pakistan Army's Claim of Wiping out BLA and the Ground Reality

After harbouring terrorists and funding terrorist organisations and terror operations in India for decades, Pakistan now seems to be tasting its own medicine. The Tahreek-e- Taliban Pakistan and the ISIS one one hand, and the BLA of Balochistan, on the other, have wielded a hard blow to Pakistan army during the last one year. Worse, the intensity of their campaign against Pakistan army has only increased despite Pakistan Army's Claim of having wiped out the rebels or broken their back bone. The BLA had launched its Operation Herof (Black Storm) in August 2025 in which it had killed hundreds of soldiers and destroyed a number of army and security check posts. The army had launched Operation Sar Bakaf and had claimed that it had broken the backbone of the BLA but the BLA proved Pakistan army wrong by launching another operation named Operation Herof 2.0 at the dawn of February 1, 2026. It carried out co-ordinated attacks on army check posts, banks, army camps, schools and government buildings in 52 places in 12 towns, reportedly killing more than 30 people including soldiers. The important feature of this operation of the BLA was that Operation Herof was led by two Baloch women fighters, Hawa Baloch and Asifa Mengal. Later both died in the army offensive and were declared martyrs by the BLA. The two women warriors claimed that they killed 200 Pakistani soldiers. The battle between the BLA and the Pakistan army continued for 40 hours in which Pakistani army used military helicopters and fighter jets to pound rebels. After the 40-hour offensive, the Pakistani army declared that it had killed 200 rebels out of 1500 BLA fighters present in Balochistan but after a silence of only ten days, the BLA struck again on an army camp in Kharan on Tuesday killing one soldier and injuring one. This showed that the rebels were down but not out. The Pakistan media, and even YouTube channels have boasted of Pakistan Army's decisive blow to the Baloch rebels. One so called counter-terrorism analyst of Pakistan on GGP News presented it's 'scholarly' analysis saying that the casualty ratio was 1:12, that is, only one soldier was killed against 12 rebels. In another words one rebel killed 0.08 soldiers and inferred that this was a very low casualty ratio in counter-terrorism discourse. The analyst, therefore, patted at the back of the army for a doing a great job. He presented another figure to prove that the Pakistan Army's performance against the Baloch rebels was spectacular. He said that there are a total of 1500 fighters in the BLA of which the Pakistan army killed 200 in just four days. It means the army decimated 15% of the total force of the BLA. He said that the army of any other country needs 8 to ten months to kill 15% of the terrorists but the Pakistani army achieved the target in just four days which was a miracle. The scholar also said   that since the ratio of killing of security personnel by the rebels was only 0.08, the operation of the BLA was a failure. Wow! What an analysis.

Other youtube journalists of Pakistan have also dished out a similar narrative of the Pakistan Army's thumping victory against the Baloch rebels and blame the attacks on India as they have christened the BLA 'Fitnatul Hindustan' alluding that the Baloch rebels have the support of India and at the same time they put their foot into their own mouth by saying that the attacks were planned in Afghanistan with the support of Afghanistan Taliban. They have even reported a secret attack in Kabul only yesterday presumably by Pakistan's ISI in which a rebel commander was killed.

In fact, the Pakistani. security forces have been unsuccessfully struggling against the Baloch Liberation Army and Baloch Liberation Front since August 2025 and have bloodied their nose. They have lost hundreds of their personnel in the battle. Instead of losing strength, the Baloch rebels have only grown stronger by the day because of Pakistan’s repressive and counterproductive approach to the Baloch problem. Despite having dialogue with the Baloch rebels, the Pakistan government and army have adopted a rigid posturing as Field Marshal Asim Munir said that the Pakistan army would fight them for five generations and the Defense minister Khwaja Asif said that the issue of the missing persons was a fraud. This is the insensitivity with which the Pakistan government and the army has been handling the Baloch issue.

The inclusion of women fighters into the BLA rank and file demonstrates the growing popularity of the BLA among the Baloch people and its widening network. Until now, women only participated in peaceful demonstrations against forced disappearances under the umbrella of BYC but Hawa Baloch and Asifa Mengal have shown that women of Baloch victims of Pakistani security forces will now join the Baloch Liberation Army and fight for freedom from oppression against the Pakistani security forces.

The Pakistani army has also suffered a humiliating defeat in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where too the Pakistan government has practically no control and the terror outfit runs a parallel government. For the last one year, the KP is boiling and it presents the scene of a civil war. The Federal government in KP too is confused over what course of action it should follow to resolve the problem. The provincial government of the PTI is against the army offensive against the TTP and the federal government insists on military operation which has only proved counterproductive. The operations with rhetorical Quranic terms have not work any miracles for them. On the contrary, the army has suffered heavy casualties against the TTP. The army have killed more civilians including women and children in the name of intelligence-based operations than terrorists. Therefore, the people of Tirah valley opposed it's operation there for the same reason that in every operation, they were the most affected. They are told to evacuate an area for the military operation. Finally, in January, the people of Tirah valley were told to move out of the area for an operation against the TTP in the peak of winter during heavy snowfall. They moved away in the towns in caravans with their belongings in vehicles as if they were refugees. This is the way Pakistan government has been fighting terrorism and rebellion.

While the revolt in Balochistan is the result of decades of exploitation and repression of human rights of the Balochs, the problem in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the result of the policy of using terrorism as a political tool. The successive Pakistani governments and dictators right from Ziaul Haque to Shahbaz Sharif promoted, protected and funded the Taliban to get billions of dollars from the US in the name of fighting terrorism. Now that the Taliban have got a strong presence in Pakistan, they want to establish their own government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They have been getting military and financial support from Afghan Taliban.

Since both BLA and TTP have a common goal ----- establishing their own independent states, they work in co-ordination and fight the Pakistan government and army. Misgovernance and wrong policies of the Pakistani government has only added to the disillusionment of the common masses with the democratic governments and have, therefore, joined the TTP and the BLA in their respective states. The army and the so-called democratic government have lost their control in KP and Balochistan. Therefore, the claim of the Pakistan army that they have wielded a death blow to the BLA is only an eyewash. The strength of the Baloch rebels has only increased and has posed a threat to the unity of Pakistan. Only a pragmatic and peaceful dialogue and a reversal of repressive measures can heal the wounds of the wronged and suppressed people of Balochistan.
