To Win Elections in Pakistan, Islamists Resort To Takfeeri Politics

Imran Khan has made tremendous dent into the traditional vote bank of Pakistan’s older political parties. Imran Khan, as a youth icon, has caught the imagination of the young voters of the country who want a change. He is not an archetypal politician who makes false promises only to reach the seat of power. During his election campaigns, he has been making statements and promises that have touched the chord of the heart of the audience. During one such rally, a police constable on duty at the rally site took off his police uniform, resigned then and there and vowed to join his party Tehreek-e-Insaf to bring the much needed change in the political change in the corruption-ridden country.

Off late he has been drawing big crowds and according to reports, Imran Khan is very optimistic about the results of the elections. He has been playing his cards very judiciously and tactfully considering the religiously charged atmosphere of the country. He has not antagonised the militant organisations of the country which play a crucial role in the outcome of the elections. That’s why his election rallies have not been targeted by the extremists so far.

Though Imran Khan is not expected to emerge as the largest party to make the government, he is expected to share power with the Muslim League-N. However, his advances towards the seat of the power have made the opponents feel shaky and they have started playing dirty politics. One such opponent is Maulana Fazl ur Rahman of Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam whose madrasas all over the country are the breeding grounds of Taliban and other militants affiliated to similar extremist organisations. It was Maulana Fazl ur Rehman who had warned the Zardari government against any military crackdown against the Taliban who had fatally attacked Malala Yousafzai and the government had planned a crackdown on the radicals. Though Imran Khan is in the good books of the Taliban with whom Maulana Fazl ur Rehman is hand in glove, the Maulana personally is unable to swallow the rise of Imran Khan on the political scene. To stop his juggernaut from rolling, Maulana Fazl ur Rehman has resorted to the last weapon which is used by the Islamists everywhere to silence their opponents and that is the weapon of Takfeer (declaring someone kafir).

Recently, Maulana Fazl ur Rehman has issued a fatwa declaring voting in favour of Imran Khan Haram (un-Islamic) terming him an agent of the US and the Jews. He has alleged that the Qadianis have funded his elections whereas the truth is that the Qadianis have announced they will not take part in voting. About Imran’s links to the Jews, Maulana Fazl ur Rehman could not give any proof. When asked about the proof, he simply said, “I am asked, ‘what is the proof that he (Imran Khan) is an agent of the Jews,’ I say there is only one proof and it is my own responsible personality. I am so righteous that I would never talk ill against anyone. This is enough that Maulana Fazl ur Rehman says that he is a Jewish agent.”

When Islamists make any allegation against anyone, no proof is needed because they are God’s chosen people. Fazl ur Rehman’s allegation that Imran Khan is an agent of the US is highly frivolous as all the rulers, from the democratically elected leaders to the army generals have been pro-US and the drone attacks carried out daily on the Pakistani soil killing innocent people have also been permitted by the pro-US dictator Pervez Musharraf and later Zardari.

Actually Maulana Fazl ur Rehman has been using Islam to consolidate his political power in Pakistan. His JUI formed the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and ruled the state for five years. But as BJP did not build the Ram Temple during its six years in power, Fazl ur Rehman’s JUI also did not try to implement the Sharia in the state. On the contrary he has given tickets to some clean shaven Young men against Imran Khan’s party while rejecting the applications of some ‘Hajis’ and ‘Maulanas’. This speaks of his hypocrisy. How righteous and reliable is he is evident from the fact that Maulana’s father Mufti Mahmood had once said to his guests that his son Fazl ur Rehman was a spy of the security agencies and whatever he discussed with his colleagues and friends at his home, he reported it to them. That’s why he never allowed him to be present in the room when he would discuss political issues with his friends.

Maulana believes in dirty politics and proudly says that for Islam, he has set up madrasas and the assemblies and Parliament are for politics. That’s why he does whatever is needed to reach the assemblies trampling all the Islamic values and ideals as he believes that assemblies are for politics. Therefore, one Pakistani columnist has rightly remarked that Fazl ur Rehman’s destination is Islamabad, not Islam. Religious leaders like Fazl ur Rehman are using Islam for petty political gains in the same way the saffron brigade is using Hindutva for narrow political gains in India.

However, political analysts in Pakistan have condemned the fatwa by Fazl ur Rehman and have opined that the fatwa will only strengthen Imran Khan’s position in the elections. Reflecting this opinion, one Pakistani citizen commented, “I've been saying this all along. Imran Khan is a proper human being. He detests Shia killings and doesn't take the fantasy of a Wahabi caliphate seriously. And that is why he has been deemed Haram to vote for. And therefore I believe it has become obligatory to vote for this man and his party for any person with a working brain cell left.”

Another commenter on a Pakistani website asked if voting Imran Khan is Haram, is “voting for the other corrupt retards Mustahab (desirable)?
