New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University is abuzz with a term imported from the Kerala High Court: ‘Love Jihad’, states a pamphlet released by the BJP’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the campus last Wednesday.

It has spurred three protest marches since, besides many responses through pamphlets, posters and blog posts, and has forced the university administration to step in.

“The allegation that Muslim men entice Hindu and Christian women into marriage for reasons other than love, as part of an Islamist conspiracy, has recently been investigated by the Kerala Police and has brought out some ugly details,” the pamphlet said.

The Indian Express had on October 1 reported that Justice K T Sankaran of the Kerala High Court had directed the state police and the Union Home Ministry to probe the alleged movement called ‘Love Jihad’, under which young Muslim men allegedly target college girls for conversion by feigning love.

“The pamphlet was prepared with inputs from our state unit,” ABVP national executive member Amit Singh said. “This problem is not particular to Kerala. There are such people in every lane and bylanes — even in this campus, there have been such instances, though none talks of it in the open.”

Singh is a research scholar with the School of International Studies at JNU.

He said, “We are planning to create awareness on the issue because we know girls in Delhi and Maharashtra have been targeted. But we do not think any organisation is involved — most people work individually.”

The pamphlet claims 4,000 girls have been converted by now.

The pamphlet has also attracted attention of the authorities. In a circular dated October 16, Associate Dean of Students Sachidanand Sinha warned that such pamphlets are likely to affect life in the campus. “This is to appeal everyone that individuals, organisations or groups must refrain from issuing pamphlets and such material that may be construed as insensitive and disrespectful to the religious or social values of various segments living on the campus,” the circular read.

The responses came in just as fast, in true JNU fashion. “In depicting the Muslims of this country as bloodthirsty, vicious demons with an systematic agenda of luring Hindu women, ABVP is merely following the footsteps of their fascist founding fathers,” said a poster signed by over 40 students.

Another poster, signed by 10 “concerned students” said, “This offensive pamphlet has a multi-dimensional attack, targeting both men and women across religions.”
